For once, Jennifer Lawrence managed to keep her cool -- no falls or "Homeland" spoilers! -- at the Cannes Film Festival when she reunited with her "Hunger Games" co-stars at a photocall for the upcoming installment of "Mockingjay: Part 1." Lawrence posed in a white crop top with Donald Sutherland, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Josh Hutcherson and Julianne Moore. The closest we got to a classic Jennifer Lawrence red carpet moment was a little ribbing she gave Claflin, who plays Finnick Odair. More, J Law, we want more!

In case you missed the memo, flat shoes are making a comeback and many of our favorite stars are jumping on the bandwagon.

Blake Lively found just about the coolest pair of loafers we've ever seen, while Kendall Jenner ditched her heels for a pair of sneakers in Cannes, which totally pulled her outfit together. Take a look at a few of our other favorite accessories of the week and let us what you like best

5 Ways Your Period Is Wrecking Your Skin

When your period comes to visit, it brings gifts: bloating, fatigue, and even the occasional freak-out. As if all that wasn't bad enough, though, many of us also contend with the seldom recognized, but very real, skin problems that pop up around that time of the month. The cause of the oily complexion and magnified pores that suddenly surface? It's actually our hormones.

Stars Go For The Bronze (Lipstick) On This Week's Best & Worst Beauty List

When we hear the words "bronze lipstick," we think back to the early '90s when The Fly Girls of "In Living Color" convinced us that we'd look just as good in the shade. While we haven't looked back at those metallic tubes of lipstick since then, the celebrities who landed on this week's beauty list may change our minds.

Actresses Elizabeth Olsen, Emmy Rossum and Hannah Simone were all spotted wearing bronze lip colors with plum undertones that accentuated their radiant complexions without looking dated.

See these bronze lipstick looks below (plus more standout hair and makeup).

BEST: Elizabeth Olsen

She's not just Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's little sister. Elizabeth steps into her own beauty with loose locks, mauve smokey eye shadow and raisin-colored lipstick.

BEST: Emmy Rossum

The "Shameless" star's tousled braided hairstyle and fresh makeup adds casual flair to her hunter green gown and glamorous earrings.

BEST: Hannah Simone

We can't seem to get enough of Simone's blunt bangs. They start just far enough back and hit at the right spot beneath her brows, framing her glossy brunette hair and lit-from-within complexion.

BEST: Kirsten Dunst

Dunst does retro glamour right sporting side-swept waves, a few coats of mascara and creamy red lipstick.

BEST: Zoe Saldana

The 35-year-old actress looks like she hasn't aged since her "Center Stage" days with this braided updo, winged eyeliner and raspberry matte lip color.

WORST: Evan Rachel Wood

We're not exactly sure what look Wood was going for with this dip-dyed hair, uneven smokey eye makeup and coral lip color. But, none of it is flattering.

WORST: Julianne Hough

julianne hough

Hough seemed to be having a rough day on the red carpet with brows that are filled in way too heavily, false eyelash strips that weigh down on her piercing blue eyes and faded cherry red lipstick.

WORST: Zoe Kravitz

zoe kravitz

It's such a shame that Kravitz's natural beauty continues to get overshadowed by this dramatic hair color. And those barely-there eyebrows, dotted eye makeup and stained lip color make the young actress look tired.

WORST: LeAnn Rimes

There is no rhyme or reason to Rimes' frosted eyeshadow and pink lipstick. We're getting a headache just looking at this photograph.

WORST: Eva Green

5 Things You Didn't Know About Your Favorite TV Shows

$

Your obsession with your favorite TV show is about to intensify.

During the Costume Designers Roundtable at the recent Vulture Festival, The Cut's senior editor Isabel Wilkinson hosted a group of costume designers who have worked on some iconic shows as of late. The panel included Lyn Paolo ("Scandal," "Shameless"), Tom Broecker ("Saturday Night Live," "House of Cards"), Jenn Rogien ("Girls," "Orange Is the New Black"), and Jenny Gering ("The Americans").

The designers discussed the interesting, behind-the-scenes world of costumes and their insights will totally change the way you watch your favorite shows.

1. There's an art behind the wardrobe on "Girls."

There've been complaints that Lena Dunham's HBO show "Girls" doesn't depict a true reality -- but costume designer Jenn Rogien assures us that Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa are sort of like us when they get dressed.

girls costume

Rogen will often "pull multiple items over again" across episodes, which means that characters are repeat offenders when it comes to clothes. Although they probably don't wear the same pair of jeans four times a week like us, at least the cast of "Girls" come close to that.

Also, if there's a discussion regarding costumes on "Girls," Shoshanna definitely needs to be mentioned. Rogien explained Shoshanna's color changes throughout the show's seasons. During the first season, she wore more pastels and bright hues, which accentuated her bubbly personality. But, as Shosh finds herself caught up in a more complicated narrative in season three, Rogien "strengthened" her colors making sure that "green was green," so that hues were true to their darker, brooding forms.

2. The uniforms in "Orange Is The New Black" actually enhance character personalities.

Rogien also dresses another cast full of women in "Orange Is The New Black," where besides flashbacks, the characters are dressed in uniform.

oitnb costumes

In the show, khaki wardrobes are used "to reinforce the institutionalization of prison inmates," Rogien explains. She adds that the lack of color really brings out the idea that these women are stripped of their livelihood from the outside -- while the orange outfits for new inmates make them stand out. The blank canvas of a khaki landscape allows nuanced ways for characters to "rule-break" through alterations and edgy hairstyles.

3. Olivia Pope doesn't always wear white.

Ask anyone who hasn't watched "Scandal" before and even they could tell you that Olivia Pope wears white. But, the truth is -- she doesn't wear it as much as people give her credit for. The show's costume designer Lyn Paolo discussed the conundrum amongst the show's audience.

scandal abc

Paolo and the rest of the panelists explained that "white is not a television color," as it is "hard to light" and "sticks out" among a crowd of character outfits. Paolo says she's only dressed Olivia in the color a couple of times throughout this past season, noting that the gleaming nature of white on camera contributes to why people really remember those "clean slate" pieces compared to her usual gray palette.

On another note, Paolo mentioned that "silly little things" like texture and silhouettes "really tell the story." For example, Paolo focused on Abby Whelen -- who in the beginning of her time on the show wore "tight" and "rigid" clothing that fit into her life's happenings -- but as she fell into an intimate relationship, her attire became "lighter" with looser layers, as her exterior attitude began to unravel.

4. "House of Cards" is SO last season -- in fashion, that is.

Don't let Frank Underwood fool you, he's just trying to fit in like the rest of the government sector in Washington, D.C. Tom Broecker, the current costume designer of "Saturday Night Live," styled the first season of "HoC" and led the panel in a discussion on why the Underwoods dabble in designer attire from past fashion seasons.

hoc costume

Broecker and the other panelists explain the way in which government officials dress to impress their constituents, not their counterparts. Constituents don't want to see their elected members spending money on frivolous items -- meaning that Frank and Claire don't want to stand out in the bureaucratic landscape they're trying to fit into. To curb the idea that they invest in unnecessary costs, Claire's YSL Muse bag is a couple of seasons behind, therefore it's cheaper and blends in with the dark, twisted D.C. style that the show depicts.

5. Comedy is one of hardest genres to dress for.

Yes, the outfits on "Saturday Night Live" can really get us laughing, but Broecker is on a serious mission to get them together. A typical week in live comedy is a whirlwind, according to the panelists. Broecker explains that he has about two days to round up the costumes for the cast and hosts -- which involves going to stores that range from vintage shops to Bergdorf's.

snl costume

But, it's not all fun and games when rewrites happen as a scene can be changed from being set in the 1800s to the 1970s, causing last minute runs to update the wardrobe. And, since the show is live -- there's more pressure in making sure the cast has the right outfits, at the right time -- or they'll "end up on set naked," he joked.

Well, we certainly wouldn't want to be that person ...

Beyonce's 'Run' Trailer Givenchy Lace Pant Suit Is Bloody Hot

While most of the world was sleeping (or out partying) last night, Jay Z and Beyoncé continued to prove that they are the hardest-working couple in showbiz by releasing the short video, "Run." Clearly, that elevator fiasco wasn't going to stop them.

Jay and Bey channel Bonnie and Clyde yet again in the badass trailer to promote their upcoming "On The Run" tour. The star-studded mini film features Sean Penn, Blake Lively, Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum. And, of course, it's set to the sounds of their all-or-nothing record “Part II (On The Run).”

While the couple definitely hold their own in exhilarating scenes with some of Hollywood's biggest names (who knew Jay Z could shutdown Don Cheadle in a card game or Beyoncé could stitch up a gun wound?), we're still reeling over the Givenchy lace pant suit Queen Bey sports while holding up a bank.

The all-white number from the French fashion house's Resort 2014 collection adds an angelic element to the singer's violent run with her hubby. Even Rashida Jones can't handle Beyoncé's sickening Givenchy get-up as they pose in a police lineup.

We gotta admit, she does look bloody hot. What do you think?

The Best Hair Gels For Men That Don't Leave A Crunchy Finish

There are two non-negotiables for hair -- it has to look good, but it can't require a lot of maintenance. The simple solution for both is gel. The best hair gel for men creates touchable hold. A crunchy, stiff finish leaves hair looking dirty. And no one wants to run their fingers through that.

Jessica Chastain's Cannes 2014 Atelier Versace Gown Has Us Feeling Blue, But In A Good Way

Let us take a moment of silence for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival red carpet because Jessica Chastain has MURDERED it.

The 37-year-old actress attended the premiere for "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby" on Saturday wearing an Atelier Versace gown that has us feeling blue, but in a good way. With her radiant red waves and immaculate red pout that matched her manicure perfectly, she looked drop dead gorgeous.

While Chastain could have easily gotten buried in all of the bright blue fabric, the asymmetrical neckline and peekaboo slit helped to break up the heaviness of the gown. And it didn't hurt that she got an extra lift in a pair of Rogier Vivier pumps.

We lift our voices in praise to the fashion gods for this glorious red carpet moment.

21 Wave-Friendly Bikinis For A Wardrobe Malfunction-Free Summer

Your biggest summer fear goes a little something like this: Dive into the ocean, get hit by a wave, and watch as your flimsy tied-up bikini top floats away into the sea like a deserted raft. And, then you have to glide back to the sand, keeping your arm positioned in just the right place while managing to hold your head up high before you crumble with embarrassment.

This Instagram Is All About Braids And Dogs, So Obviously We're Obsessed

Ladies, it's official: Summer is here. And while that may mean beach weekends and tanned legs, it also means humidity and frizzy hair.

But don't get too upset, there is an easy solution: Braids. Braids are the best for many reasons, but primarily because they appear much more intricate than they actually are. Who wants to spend time using hair tools in hot temperatures, only to walk outside and have the humidity destroy that blow out? Not us.

When we came across Amber Fillerup Clark on Instagram, her badass braids gave us plenty of inspiration to last until fall. Though not all of these are entirely simple, some are totally doable, even for the hair novice. Oh and there is a cute dog in a few of the photos. So basically, we're sold.

Gisele Bundchen slipped on a nude bodysuit during a recent photo shoot for jewelry brand Vivara.

Bundchen looked gorgeous, albeit a bit unimpressed, during the shoot dressed in the one-piece and decked out in bracelets, rings, and a necklace. The 33-year-old shared a photo from the day on her Instagram Thursday, May 29. In the shot, she sits crossed-legged as a team of people fix her hair with a brush and some hairspray.

Oh, the life of a supermodel.

What's Better Than 'Game of Thrones' And 'Star Wars'? All That Plus Some Kittens, Obvs

By now, we've all figured out that kittens make everything better. Even things that you didn't think could get any better, like "Game of Thrones" or "Star Wars," are improved with kittens.

Wendy Robbins is the photographer behind the delightful cat-centered creations below. Robbins is a self-described seamstress, crafter, pickle connoisseur and crazy cat lady.

"The inspiration for this project came mostly from an excess of kittens," Robbins told The Huffington Post in an email. "I found myself, through various circumstances (kitties not getting to the vet quickly enough for spaying, kitties abandoned at my house that were already pregnant), with more than one litter of kittens and needed them to be adopted out to great families. The portraits are intended to serve as an introduction to potential adopters."

"Really my only expectation from people in general was, hopefully, to have a good chuckle and adopt a kitten ... if not one of mine one from a neighboring shelter or animal rescue," Robbins said.

The cats are available for adoption through Robbins' personal Facebook page, but will be up on the Crosswind Studio Facebook page soon.

The Best Flip-Flops and Sandals of 2014

$
0

When you think of active footwear, you probably don't immediately think of flip-flops and sandals. Running sneakers, trail running shoes and hiking boots come to mind, but the minimalist summer wear that treads sandy beaches and muddy riverbanks often gets forgotten.

Click here to see the full List of The 12 Best Flip-Flops and Sandals of 2014

Though they might not seem like active shoes, rafting, summer camping and beach adventures wouldn't be the same without them. Flip-flops and sandals can be just as sporty and fashionable as your favorite pair of neon sneakers, with an added bonus of holding-up well under a few feet of water. When it comes to hot summer days and water sports, flip-flops and sandals are as essential as bathing suits and sunscreen.

This vital footwear comes in all shapes and sizes -- the choices are seemingly endless. From cheap, flat rubber soles to high-end leather flip-flops, choosing the right pair for you depends largely on how you plan to use them. The flimsy rubber soles won't provide adequate support for a day on your feet and leather flip-flops might not be the best choice for your next rafting trip, but we've put together a list of the best flip-flops and sandals for whatever you have planned.

When it comes to flip-flops and sandals support is a common concern. Sandals lacking support can cause leg, knee and back pain and might alter your walking stride. The sandals and flip-flops on our list feature supportive arches, contoured heels and straps that take the pressure off your toes. Some of the footwear mentioned on our list is even said to alleviate existing pain. So, before you head to the beach or pack up for your first camping trip of the season, take a look at the best flip-flops and sandals of 2014.

Skin Lightening Cream Injections Trending Among Kenya's Wealthiest

$
0

Controversy has always surrounded the practice of skin-lightening, but not enough to hinder its popularity in various communities around the world.

On River Road in Nairobi -- a crowded marketplace with a reputation for black market transactions and bribed law enforcement -- a beauty fad has taken Kenya's elite by storm. Expensive injections of topical skin-lightening cream has become wildly popular in the Kenyan capital.

Elite Daily reports that the mercury level in skin-whitening creams hint to the dangerous nature of the chemicals used to alter complexion, but without regulation there is still much to learn about the bodily effects of the relatively new craze. Harvard graduate and dermatologist Dr. Pranav Pancholi explained to Vice the danger in exactly how little is known about the health risks involved with the process.

The products used on the streets are not used by certified professionals. The trade in black market creams and injections is completely unregulated. There is no way of knowing just how dangerous they are.

But health risks are no match against the cosmetic phenomenon's rooting in colorism -- what Oprah describes as a "light skin dark skin prejudice, when people of color discriminate against each other with people within their own race."

Rose -- a River Road vendor who has been whitening her own skin for years, as well as her clients' -- explained to Vice its cultural significance in her community, where everyone from national celebrities to clients from India and Somalia pay up to $70 for one treatment.

"The injection lightens you from inside. It makes women clean. If you want an even color and fast results, injecting is much better than a cream."

Kenya is not alone in this trend -- Jamaica has faced a similar epidemic, and American celebrities and publications have been called out for apparent digital lightening of Beyoncé, Lupita Nyong'o and India Arie.

Bleaching, whitening, and lightening techniques have also been criticized in documentaries like "Dark Girls" and NBA star Andre Iguodala's denouncing of his own bobble head -- but studies show that skin tone bias is very much a reality.

The stigmatized standard of light skin is far from over in Kenyan society, as one of Rose's clients told Vice, "Nairobi is very competitive and Kenyan men like women with whiter skin.”

Does This Haircut Make Me Look Gay?

2014-05-29-DSC09260.JPG

I cut my hair last month. Let me rephrase: I shaved my head. After eight years of long, mostly natural hair, it was time. The seed had been planted over a decade earlier, when I first volunteered as a hairstylist for a St. Baldrick's event. Over the following years the seed was fertilized and watered by various clients who shaved their heads without regret, reveling in the liberation of packing away the blowdryer and hair products.

Once it was decided that I would be going through with it, I opted to join forces with the St. Baldricks Foundation. I mean, if I was going to shave my head, I might as well raise money for a good cause. Also, once I wrote the fundraising email and clicked "send," effectively notifying everyone around me about my intended plan, there was no chickening out. It's not like I was scared, but we tend to get attached to these things about our appearance, relying on them out of habit. I knew I would not be ugly with a shaved head, but I honestly had no idea what to expect. I didn't know what my head shape would look like, what the birthmarks on my scalp would look like, or what my hairline would do, so I was slightly apprehensive, against my better judgment.

In addition to my own apprehension, which was constantly doing battle with my stubborn aversion to coddling my vanity, I was barraged with outside opinion. It was surprising how many individuals, friends or family, peers or acquaintances, felt strongly about my choice.

"Can't you donate your hair without actually shaving it?"

"What about a pixie?"

"It's not too late to change your mind."

"You are going to look super-butchy."

"How much do I have to donate to get you to not shave your head?"
(That one was from my mother.)

What's the big deal? It's just hair. And it's my hair. And yet everyone around me had to slip in their say, which didn't succeed in undermining my decision at all but did succeed in chipping away at my confidence. I knew that that wasn't anyone's intent, and certainly I didn't want to let it affect me, but this confident girl can only take so much before she starts to feel the eroding effects of offhanded comments.

The day came, and a few friends gathered around while my best friend shaved my head. I donated over a foot and a half of hair through Pantene and raised $1,900 for St. Baldrick's. It turns out that my noggin is not that bad shorn, though my birthmarks look like cheetah spots. It feels great to have friends and strangers rub my shaved head (though now it has grown a bit, so I get fewer rubdowns), and yes, it is as liberating as promised -- beyond liberating.

The comments and opinions have only increased, but at least now that people see what I look like, they tend to be more positive. Again, I am startled by the vehemence of opinion shared by others about my hair.

"You look super-butch, and I love it." Awesome.

"You look super-butch, but I like it." Umm, OK?

"You look like such a lesbian." Well, I'm not a lesbian, but I do have a girlfriend, so....

"Your hair is so gay now, but you're still cute." Thanks? Wait, is gay normally not cute?

"I just want to take that shaved head and [fill in explicit adjective and verb here]." Take it easy!

2014-05-29-photo2.jpg

What I find fascinating is that I went from bi invisibility due to my long hair and "straight" appearance to bi invisibility due to my short hair and "gay" appearance. I had no idea that so many people would feel so strongly about my appearance and my head of hair. Though I struggle with the threat of insecurity awaiting a harsh comment or judgment, I have to admit that I have never felt more confidence walking into a gay bar. Whereas before I would rarely get a wink or a nod, often feeling eyes swish right past me, now I have the ladies making eyes at me across the room. It turns out that I should have done this a long time ago, back when I was single. Does this haircut make me look gay? Who cares?

If you have ever had an itch or an inkling to cut your hair, or even better, to shave your head, just do it.

Sweet, sweet Lupita Nyong'o.

The 31-year-old attended the 7th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Jersey City, New Jersey on Saturday and wowed us with her style for the millionth time.

She was the picture of summer in a black and white Alexander McQueen dress, wide brim black straw hat, black wedge sandals and a matching black and white small handbag. The sweetheart neckline and knee-length cut of her patterned frock helped to break up the bold pattern, showing off just the right amount of skin.

Nyong'o added a pop of color to her sophisticated ensemble with navy blue eyeshadow and raisin-colored lip gloss. However, the actress' best accessory was her megawatt smile.

Though we could gladly spend all day obsessing over stars' clothes and makeup, sometimes it's important to focus on their accessories, too. After all, shoes, handbags and jewelry can make an outfit. This week, a few A-listers proved this to be true.

Emily Blunt completed her outfit with a pair of fun pumps, while Rachel Zoe looked ready for the warm weather in a big, floppy hat. Check out all our favorite celeb accessories of the week and let us know which one is your favorite.

Emily Blunt's pink pumps

Although we're obsessed with Blunt's floral Dolce & Gabbana dress, it's her pink suede heels that really seal the deal for us. They add personality to her trendy dress.

Leandra Medine's Nicholas Kirkwood pumps and Nina Ricci bag

Medine may be making a silly face in this photo, but she clearly takes fashion very seriously. Just look at her checkered suede shoes with an orange cap toe, expertly paired with her neon yellow and green shoulder bag. Not everyone can power clash quite like this lady.

Danielle Bernstein's ring

Yes, the fashion blogger often gets it right, but this pearl ring is particularly badass. Not only are pearls having a huge moment right now, but this ring incorporates the fad in a modern way.

Kylie Jenner's skull rings

Is it just us, or is Kylie getting cooler by the minute? The youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan is certainly keeping up by wearing awesome accessories like these rings.
