Maya Angelou Memorial Service Attended By Oprah, Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama And More

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama lauded poet, orator and sage Maya Angelou as the first person who let her know she could be a strong and smart black woman, joining other famous admirers and friends in a private memorial service Saturday that was filled with tears, laughter, poetry and song.

Former President Bill Clinton said Angelou, one of the most famous black writers of the 20th century, was a woman who seemed to have lived five lifetimes in one. Others said the writer, who rose from poverty and segregation, gave strength to millions of women to live their own lives in modern America. Family, friends and admirers led by the first lady, Clinton and Oprah Winfrey paid tribute to Angelou at Wake Forest University in North Carolina where the writer had taught for decades. Angelou died May 28 at age 86 after a life with important roles in civil rights and the arts.

Obama told the audience gathered in a university chapel how reading Angelou's poem "Phenomenal Woman" changed a little black girl who grew up on the south side of Chicago and whose first doll was Malibu Barbie.

"She celebrated black women's beauty like no one had ever dared to before. Our curves, our stride, our strength, our grace," Obama told those seated in the wooden pews. "Her words were clever and sassy. They were powerful and sexual and boastful."

Tall and majestic, Angelou added heft to her spoken words with a deep and sonorous voice, describing herself as a poet in love with "the music of language." In 1993, she recited the most popular presidential inaugural poem in history, "On the Pulse of Morning," when Clinton opened his first term. She inspired many and became a mentor to Winfrey before she became a talk show host.

Clinton remembered that voice, and how Angelou chose not to speak for five years after she was raped by her mother's boyfriend as a child.

"She was without a voice for five years and then she developed he greatest voice on the planet. God loaned her His voice," Clinton said Saturday. "She had the voice of God. And he decided he wanted it back for a while."

He said she was a role model for many.

"We could just all be up here talking about how Maya Angelou represented a big piece of American history. And triumphed over adversity. And proved how dumb racism is," Clinton said.

The service included several rousing gospel songs. There were tears, but laughter too, as Angelou's friends remembered a clever woman with a deep spiritual faith.

At the private North Carolina school, the writer was regularly addressed as Dr. Angelou out of respect for all the honorary degrees she received even though she never graduated from college.

Winfrey remembered Angelou as her spiritual queen mother, saying she always took notes when they spoke on the phone. She cried a few times as she remembered how Angelou was a vital part of her career, reminding her of the millions of people she has touched in her career.

Winfrey said she struggled to put what Angelou meant into words, then realized she owed the poet not words, but actions.

"I cannot fill her shoes, but I can walk in her footsteps," Winfrey said.

Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis and raised in Stamps, Arkansas, and San Francisco. Her life included writing poetry by age 9, giving birth as a single mother by 17, and becoming San Francisco's first black streetcar conductor. She also once danced at a strip joint, shared the stage with comic Phyllis Diller and garnered career advice from singer Billie Holiday. She wrote music and plays, received an Emmy nomination for her acting in the 1970s TV miniseries "Roots" and danced with Alvin Ailey.

Angelou once worked as a coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and lived for years in Egypt and Ghana, where she met Mandela. In 1968, she was helping the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. organize the Poor People's March in Memphis, Tennessee, where the civil rights leader was slain on Angelou's 40th birthday.

Clinton said he first encountered Angelou through her autobiographical book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." He grew up about 20 miles from where Angelou spent her childhood and said the author's power was amplified because he was so familiar with her surroundings.

Clinton compared Angelou to a firefly, who would light up at the most unexpected time, illuminating "something right before your nose you've been overlooking something in your mind you've been burying. Something in your heart you were afraid to face."

Coco Rocha Is The Picture Of Perfection On This Week's Best And Worst Beauty (PHOTOS)

Coco Rocha's supermodel status is pretty much a prerequisite for perfection -- and she proved that point this week with a look that is best described as a masterpiece.

The 25-year-old beauty was spotted on the red carpet at the 2014 CFDA Awards looking like she had stepped out of a painting hanging at the Lourve. Her hat and cat-eye combo literally gave us chills.

Other standouts this week included, Solange Knowles with her head of envy-inducing hair and Taylor Schilling's sweet and simple makeup. On the other hand, Lupita Nyong'o let us down in an unbelievable weave.

Check out this week's best and worst beauty looks below and tell us what you think!

BEST: Coco Rocha

coco rocha

We can't stop staring at this photo! The supermodel's wing-tipped lined eyes, porcelain complexion and wine-hued pout are the picture of perfection.

BEST: Solange Knowles

solange knowles

Solange is back on the scene -- after her infamous brawl -- and looking more beautiful than ever! Her Diana Ross-esque hair, full brows and minimal makeup are a combination of refined style.

BEST: Rihanna

rihanna

If you were able to pry your eyes away from Riri's completely see-through crystal gown, then you'd notice that the singer's makeup was equally as stunning. Her homage to Josephine Baker was topped off by a smokey eye, sleek pixie and dazzling headscarf.

BEST: Sophia Bush

sophia bush

We've seen plenty of stars sporting their long locks in side-swept waves, but we love that Sophia is proving that the look is achievable with shorter hair as well.

BEST: Taylor Schilling

taylor schilling

The "Orange Is the New Black" star knows the power of the old adage: less is more. Teaming her deep plunging, sequined dress with a simple bronze-hued eye and loose chignon hairdo was a winning move.

WORST: Miranda Lambert

miranda lambert

The country singer looks like the victim of too much hair spray. In addition, her beautiful small eyes are lost in a haze of sloppy dark liner.

WORST: Lupita Nyong'o

lupita nyongo

We applaud Lupita's adventurous spirit when it comes to switching up her hairstyles. However, this messy pompadour hair has got to go. Good thing the stunning actress distracted us a bit with her bold blue eyeshadow and berry lip.

WORST: Courtney Love

courtney love

Courtney is definitely known for her disheveled look, but that doesn't mean we have to love it. A 30-second session with a comb and brush would have greatly improved this outcome. Sigh.

WORST: Stacey Bendet

stacey bendet

Eek! This is a prime example of a smokey eye gone wrong. The heavy matte liner and eyeshadow make the Alice+Olivia fashion designer look like she has two black eyes.

WORST: Gwen Sebastian

gwen sebastian

It's clear this singer/songwriter is thrilled to be at the CMT Music Awards, but there's nothing exciting about her severely swooped hair, grayish eye makeup and bubble gum painted pout.

Somebody, anybody, please pass us a cool beverage because we're burning up!

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girls Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge and Nina Agdal reunited at the 2014 Spike TV Guys’ Choice Awards. The beautiful trio, who starred on the 50th anniversary issue of Sports Illustrated, walked away with the Holy Grail of Hot award.

Even though the models were a bit more covered up than what they sported on their famous magazine cover, they proved that they deserved the honor wearing sexy summer dresses to the awards show (which airs on Spike TV June 11).

Teigen shone in a strapless yellow Three Floor minidress and nude Casadei sandals that complemented her sun-kissed skin. Aldridge kept it simple, yet sultry in a little black dress, tons of gold accessories and bright red lipstick. Meanwhile, Agdal went for a sporty-chic look in a black and white Emilio Pucci dress with a blue accent belt and black heels.

Check out their hot style below and we dare you not to break out into a sweat.

Couples who wear leather together, stay together...

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been inseparable for quite some time now, but it would appear that their coordinating wardrobes are becoming increasingly more alike. The newlyweds recently stepped out in head-to-toe white just days after their wedding, and you can't really get more matchy-matchy than that.

It's no secret that Kanye has helped Kim's style evolve, so in honor of his 37th birthday, we've collected photos of Mr. and Mrs. Kanye West in coordinating ensembles. We can only wonder, are they sharing clothes at this point?

Sandra Bullock Wins Decade Of Hotness Award

On Saturday, June 7, Sandra Bullock was awarded the Decade of Hotness title at Spike TV's Guys' Choice Awards. Surrounded by past co-stars Hugh Grant, Keanu Reeves and Matthew McConaughey, she was handed a gold "Mantlers" trophy, which hopefully clashes with her home decor.

sandra bullock

"We've been courting Sandra so long for this award that she was eventually going to say yes or take out a restraining order," Casey Patterson, Executive Vice President of Viacom said in a release.

There's an entire dissertation to be written about what is wrong with "honoring" women for a decade of hotness, but to keep it simple: "Speed" came out in June of 1994, so Bullock has been hot for more than two decades. Also, let's not award people for hotness.

This year Rihanna was also recognized by Spike TV with the more ephemeral title of "Most Desirable Woman." Previous talented and successful women that have been given "Mantlers" for ten years of being good looking include Jennifer Aniston (2011), Charlize Theron (2010), Halle Berry (2009) and Cameron Diaz (2008).

No one understands you like a best friend. Not your mom, not your sibling, not your spouse. A best friend will sit with you while you're crying, know when the truth is better than a white lie and even attempt to fight that ex of yours who broke your heart. In the wise words of author Kate Angell, “A good friend will come and bail you out of jail, but a best friend will be sitting next to you saying, 'Damn, that was fun.'"

In celebration of National Best Friend Day on June 8, we've put together some reasons having a BFF is so great using examples from the most loyal, passionate and downright fierce female friendships seen on screen. Here are 13 reasons a bestie is absolutely irreplaceable:

1. No matter how much trouble you're in, she'll always help you get out of it. (Or at least get away with it.)

51 Beauty Queens Vie For Miss USA Crown

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Newly crowned Miss USA Nia Sanchez, a fourth-degree black belt in the Korean martial art of taekwondo, says that women need to be able to defend themselves as a way to battle the problem of campus rape and that bringing awareness to the issue is very important.

The 24-year-old from Las Vegas, Nevada, beat out 50 other contestants from all the states and the District of Columbia on Sunday night for the title of 63rd Miss USA. First runner-up was Miss North Dakota Audra Mari. Sanchez will go on to represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe competition later this year. In a vibrant red floor-length fishtail gown, Miss Nevada answered judge Rumer Willis' question about the high rate of sexual assaults on college campuses. Willis, the 25-year-old daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, said 19 percent of U.S. undergraduate women are victims of sexual assault and asked Sanchez why she thinks the issue is being swept under the rug and what should be done about it.

Sanchez said women need to take it upon themselves to learn how to defend themselves. After being crowned, Sanchez told reporters she lived for a time in a women's shelter at a young age with her mother and at age 8 took up taekwondo to learn self-defense and build up her confidence.

As an adult, she has volunteered at women's shelters, teaching residents how to defend themselves and teaching kids about "stranger danger."

"I relate to them on a personal level because I've been there myself," she said, adding that she plans to take her passion and knowledge for martial arts to the masses as Miss USA.

Sanchez also said she was "so proud to bring the title of Miss USA back to Nevada."

"I'm so excited," she said. "It's a dream come true."

Erin Brady, of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, the 2013 winner, gave up her crown to Sanchez after a three-hour telecast from the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana. Besides Mari, the next four runners-up, judged on interviews, evening gowns and swimsuits were: Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs, Miss Louisiana Brittany Guidry, Miss Florida Brittany Oldehoff and Miss Iowa Carlyn Bradarich. All the titles included USA after the state.

Bradarich got a second chance when the viewing audience gave her the most votes on Twitter in the pageant's first-ever "Save the Queen" option.

The subject of sexual assault was also on the mind of Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto. She made headlines this week when she said she was the product of rape. During a taped segment that aired when her name was called, Gatto said her mother was 19 when she was attacked leaving work in Pittsburgh and became pregnant.

Gatto said she is living proof "that your circumstances do not define your life."

First runner-up Mari said she overcame being bullied in high school by competing in ice hockey. The Fargo, North Dakota, native wore a green floor-length evening gown and in her final interview talked about the importance of getting an education and going to college.

Contestants entered the stage on a glitzy float as Louisiana native singer-songwriter Marc Broussard sang the New Orleans hits "Iko Iko" and "Hey Pocky Way" to kick off the 2014 contest. The women introduced themselves while holding Mardi Gras masks in their hands as purple, green and gold confetti fell in the background.

The pageant also included musical acts by the country music duo Florida Georgia Line, rapper Nelly and Latin pop band Camila.

Celebrity judges walked a red carpet in evening gowns and tuxedos before the start of the show, posing for pictures and talking about the qualities they would be looking for in the beauty they crown the winner.

"It's very important that she has confidence," said Barbara Palacios, Miss Universe 1986 and a coach and judge for the new Telemundo reality show, "Miss Latina Universo." ''The right attitude and perseverance are also very important."

"It's all about the eyes," said Lance Bass of the pop singing boy group NSYNC. "I just want to see a girl that is just really having a good time up there."

Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization, which includes the Miss USA pageant, also walked the red carpet.

While most of Hollywood's leading ladies are stepping out with lob haircuts, Jessica Chastain took to Instagram Saturday to show off her new bangs. The "Zero Dark Thirty" actress' red hair oozes sex appeal with her brow-grazing fringe perfected by celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora.

Chastain loaded up her Instagram caption with hash tags like "#hair #genius #brigittebardot #60s #fashion #iloveitsomuch," tipping us off to the inspiration behind those bangs. (We wonder what Kate Moss thinks.)

Even though the Oscar-nominated star already gives us retro vibes with her luxurious waves, winged-out liner and stunning gowns, we can't wait to see how Chastain incorporates her new hairdo into her red carpet style.

Whitney Port Teaches Us How To Stay Chic In Sticky Weather

Whitney Port has definitely made a name for herself in Hollywood. And although we love a good Whit moment from "The Hills" or the "The City," it's her killer style that has kept this blonde babe in our minds. So, when we found out we had the chance to chat with her, we knew we were going to be receiving some pretty amazing fashion advice.

Since it's finally hot outside, we decided to pick Port's brain on warm weather fashion. After all, the summer months can be messy with the sticky humidity and harsh UV rays.

"Wearing something loose, where you can still feel chic" is key, Port says, adding that it is equally important to "be comfortable." The fashion maven recommends dresses with floral patterns that have light, breezy fabrics, to ensure that you're not sweating through your clothes. Additionally, Port loves a good pair of cutoff shorts which she says "will always get you a long way -- you can wear them a bunch of different ways." Amen to that.

Of course, you need some hot weather-proof accessories to really pull your outfit together. "A great gladiator sandal is always comfortable but can dress something up," Port mentions. But the real kicker? "A cool pair of shades -- I'm really into a round-shaped sunglass," she says.

Although Port already spearheads her own fashion line, Whitney Eve, she's now partnering up with Diet Coke to design tote bags for their newly launched program called Diet Coke Tastemakers Project, which fits in with the chill, Whitney Port style we all know and love.

When it comes to weddings, specifically the ones that involve at least one royal, there are plenty of major fashion moments to go around. As we have noticed in the past, those moments come not only from the bride, but the sister of the bride as well. Such is the case for Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who looked absolutely gorgeous at her brother Juan Zorreguieta's wedding in Vienna on Saturday.

Never one to hold back when it comes to style, Maxima opted for an elaborate pink gown and matching cape. Add to that a bag in the same hue and dazzling diamonds, and you have wedding-party perfection.

Of course, we would expect no less from the queen. After all, she has been on the cover of Vogue. But with all the summer weddings we have coming up, this look proves that we could all take some style tips from her majesty.

How To Keep Your Office Style Cool In The Summer Heat

$
0
0
There are things we love about summer: lounging in warm weather, festival-inspired outfits, and beach waves that were actually created at the beach. But if you work a 9-to-5 office job (and you're not this person) chances are, you don't get to experience all the joys of summer every single day.

Unless your job requires you to be in beachwear 24/7, the sweaty summer months can seriously cramp your office style. Blazers and button-ups pretty much beg for sweat stains and your favorite go-to slacks end up feeling like ski pants in the desert.

This is why we turned to professional stylists living in a state where the summer never ends: Hawaii. Below, nine style tips to keep your office style cool, even in the most sizzling of days.

1. Keep it short
"During the hot summer days," says Tiare Thomas, a professional stylist who styles for Miss Hawaii USA, "replacing slacks with dressy shorts and a light and airy blouse is key." While going too short is a definite no-no, Thomas says that the modern workplace is more open to shorts as appropriate office attire, as long as its done with class in mind.

To find an appropriate length: place both of your arms straight down, fingers flat; the end of the garment should reach just below the tip of your finger. Any shorter and it's probably too short.

2. But keep it balanced
A well-balanced skin-to-fabric ratio is important for staying cool while looking classy. When opting for dressy shorts, Thomas says it's best to pair them with a long-sleeved top or light sweater to keep the balance. This also works in reverse: if you're wearing long pants, it's OK to show a little more skin up top -- just a little!

If you're opting for a sleeveless top, Summer Shiigi, a Hawaii fashion blogger and stylist, recommends keeping most of your shoulders covered. Thinner straps should be paired with a cardigan or jacket.

3. Dress for a hot day, but cold office
If your office is like ours, the air conditioning is deathly cold, seriously who keeps touching the thermostat?!? keeps things relatively cool, which can make dressing for the hot commute a little complicated. Layering, Shiigi says, is a perfect solution to "keep your style versatile."

She recommends starting with the basics: a cami, tank top or blouse. Then layer over it one-by-one, making sure that the whole outfit is still work-appropriate as the layers come off.

4. Stick to breathable fabrics
Virtually all of your typical office attire pieces can be swapped for lighter, breezier versions, Shiigi says. "Instead of crisp button downs, try a silk cotton blend. It's the luxurious resort wear alternative to the classic work shirt."

Shiigi also recommends stashing your polyester pieces for the season -- yes, that means your go-to slacks. Lightweight linen pants give your legs breathability while staying on the conservative side. If your office dress code welcomes denim, go for chambray fabric instead.

5. Stock up on the basics
"Basics are important," Thomas says. "When your closet is stocked with the basics, you can incorporate them in your wardrobe for the entire year. Add in trends throughout the summer to create different looks."

With a full stock of basic pieces, putting together a light summer outfit is as easy as slapping on a bright pencil skirt, a camisole, cardigan, and flats. Other basics Thomas recommends keeping are: black blazer, black lightweight slacks, black leggings, wrap dresses, camisoles of all colors, black & nude pumps, stud earrings, black & brown purses, black and white dress shorts and of course, LBDs.

6. When in doubt, always choose the midi
"How short is too short is always the question," Shiigi says, so opting for the more-modest midi skirt is the safest option. "The length of any midi skirt is always appropriate for any job, but with this season being so heavily retro-inspired, you can stay classy, stylish and cool in an A-line midi skirt."

7. Throw on a jumpsuit
Thomas and Shiigi both love jumpsuits this season and recommend having one for the office. "Choosing the right [jumpsuit] can be challenging, so fit is everything," says Shiigi. "Dress for your body type and you'll look chic in a one-piece for work and play."

8. The go-to updo
Let's face it, long luscious locks can feel like an unwanted jacket for your head under the hot summer sun. "A polished updo," compared to having heat-frazzled hair, "always makes a perfect impression," says Shiigi. A go-to updo for the summer will be a lifesaver when you're sweating.

9. Explore island-based brands for inspiration
Since resort collections and island-based designers focus on classy, wearable pieces for warm weather year-round, they are perfect muses for your summery office looks. Hawaii-based designers such as Fighting Eel, and boutiques like Bamboo Sky and Ava Sky, have lightweight pieces that can be styled up for business, styled down for a day at the beach, and even dressy enough for a night at the club.

Style takeaways from island-inspired frocks? Thomas recommends kimono coverups, pleated skirts, bright colors and floral prints, lounge pants (styled to look more professional), and, most importantly, a smile.

Check out Thomas and Shiigi's office attire picks for the summer:

5 Curly Hair Tips To Get You Through Summer

Enough with the summer wreaks havoc on curly hair talk! Now that the temps are getting hotter and hotter, it's time that we take back control of our curls.

If you're unsure about joining our beat the heat hair movement, we've got some convincing advice from a fellow curly-haired gal to help you get through the warm weather months.

Advertising account manager Nicole Elfstrom's loose spirals look picture perfect -- there is enough wave and enough body. Plus, her hair doesn't curl into one frizzy mess while outdoors. So how exactly does she do it?

Elfstrom's curly haircare starts at night. Before heading to bed, she shampoos her locks and uses conditioner as needed to help keep her natural curl better. Then she lets it air-dry.

In the morning, Elfstrom spritzes her freshly-washed hair with a fast-drying hairspray that adds shine and gives a long-lasting hold before using a spiral curling iron. "It takes like ten minutes," she adds. "I follow that spiral with my hair and that coil works way better with my hair." To finish, this brunette beauty brushes out her hair "to make it look natural."

To maintain your ringlets, we recommend pin-curling your hair to prevent overusing heat styling tools and sleeping with a satin head scarf or bonnet.

What Is Sexy?

As a stylist, I'm fascinated by pop culture, and I'm always on the lookout for trends and inspiration for my clients. All too often, I'm just not seeing it. The media sets the standards of what is sexy. This standard has a tendency to cause young girls and grown women to believe that if you are not "hot" according to conventional standards, then you're not interesting or desirable.

"I think the quality of sexiness comes from within. It is something that is in you or it isn't and it really doesn't have much to do with breasts or thighs or the pout of your lips." - Sophia Loren

This conundrum has caused me to ask myself: What is sexy? Provocatively gyrating on a stage with a giant foam finger? No. Walking down the red carpet practically naked? No. Celebrating someone on the cover of a magazine whose career was launched with a sex tape? No. We're placing people and things that are just not good for us on a pedestal, and it makes me question myself -- have I lost the plot? The unfortunate reality is that sex sells, and the more we buy into it, the more we will see.

Feeling sexy is a result of being comfortable and confident in your skin, not the other way around. The definition of a sex symbol shouldn't be just the obvious. When sexiness is backed by poise, elegance, purpose and substance, it becomes most powerful.

Here are some women we admire and modern day sex symbols who get it right. We like to focus on women whose priorities in life are focused on giving back, and always begin with the following question: What is their gift, message and cause?

Look at Natalia Vodianova. She is one of the world's most successful supermodels and has been the iconic face of Calvin Klein and several other big name brands. She now focuses all her energy on giving back. As the founder of Naked Heart Foundation, a charity created to build playgrounds in underprivileged villages in Russia, she is a Paralympic Games Ambassador featured in the moving "Never Stop" video. (It's a must see!)

A form-fitting ladylike knee-length dress is totally sexy without being overt.

Activist Olivia Wilde is another great example of a powerful and tastefully sexy woman giving back. Co-creator of Conscious Commerce, a site that highlights cool products that are created ethically and give back, she was also part of the incredible documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, which raises awareness about the life-changing solutions in health care, education and economic empowerment for women and girls. Wilde also supports Charity Water and American Foundation for Equal rights.

There is nothing sexier than a LBD with a key hole, showing shoulders and emphasizing the waist with a belt.

UN Messenger of Peace Charlize Theron founded Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project in an effort to support African youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS, primarily in her home country of South Africa. In collaboration with Oprah's Angel Network, CTAOP provided lead funding to a community-based South African nonprofit that provides mobile health services to secondary schools. Don't you think that this makes her even sexier? Being tastefully sexy is about what you do in life and about how you carry yourself, and Charlize Theron has got it down.

Theron shows skin in a regal way -- it's just enough and never too much.

It's OK to celebrate someone as a sex symbol. But when you are tastefully sexy AND doing things to improve the world, it's so much more powerful and inspiring than just looking hot in front of the camera.

Don't let the chase for sexy get in the way of what you're trying to accomplish. Do what you love, be yourself, be healthy, give back and before you even realize it, you will become sexy -- to yourself first and then to others. Remember that it's not what you see in the mirror, it's who you see. What is sexy to you?

You Are Never Too Old for Prom

In a previous blog, I shared a story about Brittany Mason, a model and former Miss Indiana, who was so bullied and terrorized as a teen, that she never attended her own prom. After discovering this, I decided to ask Brittany to be my date to my school's prom. I, unfortunately, never attended my prom after being dumped by my high school girlfriend a few weeks before. Don't get me wrong, attending prom is not significant in the overall series of events in one's life, but it is still special and something that all students should have an opportunity to do. So, it's over ten years that Brittany and I graduated high school, but attending prom was something that we both always wanted to do... and we finally got to.

Here is a slideshow of our amazing prom experience, and a night that neither of us will ever forget. Thank you to my amazing Union High School students, who allowed us to share in that incredible and memorable night.

A special thanks to the incredible designer Dany Tabet for providing Brittany's beautiful gown.

9 Things You Didn't Know About Miss USA 2014 Winner Nia Sanchez

Nia Sanchez, 24, was crowned the most beautiful woman in the United States on Sunday night, but this is one beauty queen that packs a punch -- and a kick.

The model represented Miss Nevada in the annual competition and beat out 50 contestants from all the states and the District of Columbia to win the title of Miss USA. Sanchez received the crown from last year’s winner, Connecticut’s Erin Brady, as confetti dropped and bouquets given at the end of the three-hour event held at the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana.

A few interesting facts about Nia were revealed during the 63rd edition of Miss USA but here are 7 things you probably didn’t know.

1) She Is The First Miss USA Winner From Nevada

That’s right. Nia is the first beauty queen to take the Miss USA crown for the state of Nevada since the pageant began in 1952. She won the title of Miss Nevada in January and will now represent the United States at Miss Universe 2014.

2) She May Be Miss Nevada But She Was Born In California.

Nia was actually born in Sacramento, California and lived there until the age of 7, according to her profile. After moving around a bit within the U.S. and traveling around the globe, she made Las Vegas her hometown.

3) She’s Hispanic.

The newly crowned Miss USA is “half Hispanic,” according to her profile. In fact, Nia said that she made it a point to travel to Mexico on mission trips when she was growing up. The 24-year-old model is one of the few Latinas to have won the crown in the history of Miss USA, Mexican-born actress Laura Herring was the first in 1985.

4) She’s also competed in Latin America

After winning the Miss Nevada title in January, Nia told the Las Vegas Weekly she’d participated in various pageants since the age of 19.

“I competed in California a few times, and I’ve also represented the United States in Ecuador a few times. I went to Miss Turismo Latino being Estados Unidos, the United States, and Miss Reina Mundial de Banano, which is Miss Queen of Bananas of the World. It sounds better in Spanish.”

5) She’s A Real Life Disney Princess

Nia has been working as a model for the past 7 years, and one of her more animated jobs was working as a face character for Hong Kong Disney.

6) Her Childhood Wasn’t Exactly Picture Perfect

At a young age, Nia and her mother lived in a woman’s shelter until they were able to move in with her aunt in Oregon.

“When I was 6 years old, my mom and dad were going through a divorce, and my mom beforehand was a full-time stay-at-home mom, so she didn’t have a job or any way to get out on her own,” Sanchez told Las Vegas Weekly. “So we stayed at a women’s shelter for two months while she got a job and was working. It was great because they provided day care for us while she was out there trying to save up.”

7) She Now Volunteers At A Women’s Shelter

Due to her own childhood experience, Nia now takes times to teach Sunday School and martial arts “Stranger Danger” classes to children at the Shade Tree shelter in Las Vegas.

8) She Was In An "Aggressive" Relationship

Nia told Las Vegas Weekly that part of the reason she works in the women’s shelter is because of a past unhealthy relationship.

“I feel like I can relate to them, and to the women, as well, because there was a point in my life when I was 21 when I went through a very unhealthy relationship,” Sanchez said. “I was lucky that I got out of it before it got abusive, but it was aggressive, and I feel like I can really relate with women on that level more personally... It can almost be a little embarrassing, but I feel like I am where I am today because I grew so much.”

Today, however, the model seems to be quite happy with her boyfriend and actor Daniel Booko.

9) She Is A Fourth-Degree Black Belt In Taekwondo

Nia started training in the Korean martial art from when she was 8. By age 12 she started teaching and by the time she was 15 she was a certified instructor. Her parents own a studio in California, so yeah.

In fact, she brought up her experience with taekwondo during the interview segment of the Miss USA pageant. When asked about what types of policy should be implemented to combat sexual violence on college campuses, the beauty queen said the following:

"I believe that some colleges may potentially be afraid of having a bad reputation and that would be a reason it could be swept under the rug, because they don't want that to come out into the public. But I think more awareness is very important so women can learn how to protect themselves. Myself, as a fourth-degree black belt, I learned from a young age that you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself. And I think that's something that we should start to really implement for a lot of women."
