This Iggy Azalea Makeup Tutorial Proves Why This Rapper's So Fancy

You can't hear the name Iggy Azalea without busting out "First thing's first, I'm the realest," or better yet, you just sing the "Fancy" chorus that's not even Iggy, but Charli XCX. But whatever you do, you probably only know a few things about the Australia-born rapper and if anything, you know that she pretty much has her makeup game on lock.

Iggy's single "Change Your Life" has a music video that shows a variety of outfit and makeup transformations. But none of them even touch the classic white ensemble, which Iggy amps up with an unexpected French twist hairdo, popping red lipstick and dazzling gold jewelry. So for this week's Beauty Screen, we knew we had to recreate this breakout star's best look yet for summer.

Thankfully, HuffPost Lifestyle Fellow (and Iggy fan) Carly Ledbetter volunteered to be transformed into Ms. Azalea.

Hair: The French twist is one of those hairstyles that has edge and grace. First, we sprayed Garnier Volumizing Spray all over Carly's hair and dried the roots vertically with a blow dryer for extra volume. Then, we made a deep part and set aside the top portion to later create the pompadour. After slicking the sides of Carly's hair back with Pureology Liquid Wax, we used a small tooth comb to twist the hair into itself, starting low to ensure sure we had a sort of cocoon effect.

Once we secured the spine of the French twist with hair pins (not to be confused with bobby pins), we continued to twist the remaining hair into an open roll, by wrapping the strands around a finger. We spritzed on Big Sexy Hair Spray so the 'do would stay together. Finally, we teased and smoothed out the pomp, eventually tucking it into the crown of Carly's hair.

Makeup: Out of all of the makeup looks in the video "Change Your Life," this is Iggy's most classic and glamorous look. For the base, we started with Maybelline Dream BB Cream in Light and layered with Inglot HD Illuminizing Pressed Powder in 402. Afterwards, we highlighted and slightly contoured Carly's cheekbones with NARS Multiple in Orgasm (mixed with Sonia Kashuk Highlighter Stick in Persian Sunset). We also swept Inglot Freedom System HD Sculpting Powder along her jawbone.

For the eyes, we applied a light gold just to make her eyelashes pop. Then we added a few single lashes from MAC Cosmetics' 30 Lash set, attaching them to the upper and outer corners of Carly's eyes -- finishing with black mascara.

But the real artistry came with the lips (well, other than the hair, of course). First, we filled in her lips with Make Up For Ever Lip Liner in Red to create a barrier so the other textures didn't feather or bleed. Next, we added a satin lipstick like Dolce and Gabbana Classic Cream in Scarlett. Carly's red pout was topped off with gloss from Mary Kay's Nourishine line in Rock 'n Roll Red, which definitely rocked.

This Is What A (High School Male) Feminist Looks Like

If you're feeling a bit discouraging by the fight against sexism, this video is the perfect pick-me-up.

High school teacher Ileana Jiménez posted a video of seven of her male high school students sharing their thoughts on feminism. Each young man proudly declares himself a feminist and discusses how feminism has impacted everyday life.

To watch 16- and 17-year-old boys promote feminism with such passion and pride is refreshing. While women still (rightfully) stand at the forefront of the feminist movement, the fact that educators emphasize women's equality to young men early and often is critical to ever achieving it.

When asked what he see as the future of feminism, one young man said, "Us! We're the future of feminism and that's why we have to keep the ball rolling."

It's Not Always About Food: Charles James at the Met Museum

Accidental Locavore Clover Leaf GownPart of the Accidental Locavore's manifesto for 2014 was a resolution to see more art, and so far I've seen some great shows. Keeping to my plan, I carved out some time last week to see the Charles James show at the Metropolitan Museum.

Largely unknown, he's always been one of my favorite designers because the construction of his clothes, especially the ball gowns, is absolutely incredible! Originally trained as an architect, he brought that engineering sensibility to clothing, and what makes the show at the Met so spectacular is the use of technology to highlight and explain how the clothes were constructed.

In two sections, one of the rooms houses about a dozen ball gowns. Each gown has a camera and computer monitor. The camera scans the dress, pixelates it and constructs it from the bottom up, giving you a look at the layers and underpinnings. Then, there's a history of the dress and (depending on which one it is) a deconstruction of it, showing you how the pattern pieces were conceived and constructed. On the more elaborate pieces, there are X-rays showing the layering, boning and all the internal workings. It's all just fascinating and an incredible use of technology!

The lower floor has more of the earlier pieces along with drawings and pieces from the archives. The use of technology continues downstairs too, allowing you to peer under the skirt of one of the dresses, exposing layers of multi-colored tulle. There are three pieces made out of 6" wide satin ribbons and the computer-generated video of how the ribbons were cut and constructed will just leave you shaking your head in disbelief! Continuing with the use of ribbons were three of my favorite pieces. James was given grosgrain ribbon, 18" wide, and with it he constructed two amazing bolero jackets and an origami inspired hat.

Give yourself a couple of hours to really peruse the show and get to the museum by August 10th, it's absolutely worth it!

Beyoncé Emoji Lyric T-Shirts We Didn't Ask For, But Love Anyway

After the emoji interpretation of Beyonce's "Drunk in Love" video went viral earlier this year, it was only right that the awesomeness found its way to our closets.

With that said, Beyoncé is offering fans a chance to rock her emoji-fied lyrics on their sleeves (literally) with two T-shirts for her songs "Drunk in Love" and "Blow."

beyonce emoji tshirt

As you probably guessed, the little surfer dude emoji represents everyone's favorite line/word from "Drunk In Love": Surfboard. And then there's the cherries emoji for "Blow," which are a nod to the sexually suggestive themes in the tune. Clever. But, we've got our fingers crossed for a "Yonce" tee with perhaps a set of lips or liquor bottle emoji. #justsayin

Right now the tees are only available for pre-sale and retail for $40. What do you think of Bey's emoji-fied fashions?

Kris Jenner Says Beyonce And Jay Z Skipping Kimye's Wedding Was No Big Deal

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West threw the biggest celebrity wedding of the year last month, but the two most A-list names on their guest list never made it to the couple's nuptials in Florence, Italy.

There was much talk over whether Beyonce and Jay Z would attend the wedding, and when it was discovered that they skipped the lavish affair in favor of a weekend in the Hamptons, it was hard to see it as anything but a snub -- despite Beyonce's sincere Instagram message to the newlyweds.

But the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Carter weren't in attendance was no big deal, if you believe Kris Jenner.

"There was so much commotion and excitement, I never really gave that a second thought," the 58-year-old momager explained when she called into the "The Kyle and Jackie O Show" on Tuesday, June 10.

"If you had been there, you would have thought that was the last thing on anyone's mind," she told the show's hosts, adding, "[I] just assumed they were working."

But while Jenner is downplaying the reaction to the snub, it seems like it might have been a bigger deal than she's willing to admit. Rumors of tension between West and Jay Z have been brewing for some time, and the fact that West omitted Jay Z's name from his lyrics three times while performing this past weekend at the X Games in Austin only seems to further fuel speculation that a full-on feud is in full swing.

3D Print This: Prosthetic Hands & Couture Dresses

The 3D printing revolution is here! In this week's episode of Hardwired 2.0 watch me tour MakerBot Studios and uncover the latest innovations in 3D printing technology.

I couldn't believe all of the products printed using MakerBot's printers--from figurines to robotic hands to shoes! Be sure to check them out in my gallery.

I first met with MakerBot's CEO Bre Pettis to learn all about the process. 3D printing uses fused deposition modeling, which is basically a fancy robotically controlled hot glue gun. The printers feed a PLA filament through the hot tip on the printer to draw the object one layer at a time, which makes these products typically more affordable than traditional manufacturing. I got to learn about the Robohand project, which makes prosthetic hands for only $5!

Next, I met with Francis Bitonti to see how designers are using 3D printing to revolutionize the fashion world. Think custom designer gowns for $400! He recently made a couture 3D printed dress for fashion icon Dita von Teese.

So excited to see what's next in the world of 3D printing. What would you print with a 3D printer? Join the conversation by tweeting me @aoloriginals, @ijustine, #AOLHardwired, @gethardwired!

Suit shorts are not okay, Fox News.

The controversial summer trend has been getting a lot of attention in recent days, with everyone from NPR to Esquire debating the merits of wearing shorts with a suit jacket.

The female hosts of "Outnumbered" sounded off about short suits on Wednesday, and they weren't fans. Then, guest co-host and Fox News correspondent Jesse Watters decided to show his colleagues what the trend looks like in real life.

Headwraps, Hoodies, and Denim: How Clothing has Shaped Protests and Revolutions

On April 14 Boko Haram, a Nigerian Islamic terrorist group, kidnapped over 200 girls from their school in the rural town of Chibok located in Borno State in Northern Nigeria. They reportedly planned to convert each of the girls into Muslims and sell them off as brides. Boko Haram later released video footage of some of the girls reciting Muslim prayers.

The incident sparked an outcry on social media, which resulted in the popular hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls. Protestors across the globe also took to the streets.

One demonstration held last month in New York City asked female attendees to “rock a crown” (a head wrap), to show solidarity with the mothers of the young women who were violently stolen.

When I first saw the invitation to the rally, my emotions kicked into full gear for the young women of Chibok. I thought about how on-trend head wraps have become. A part of me wanted all of us to put our good fashion sense on pause. Did the mothers of these young women really need us to wear a gele or a turban to show solidarity? Clearly our headgear would be the furthest thing from their minds at such a trying time.

Kate Upton's Best Friend Is Self-Proclaimed 'Bachelor' Reject Lucy Aragon

Kate Upton turned 22 yesterday and the Internet was aflutter for the bombshell's birthday. While that meant most of the day turned into stalking old slideshows of Upton, we also learned of the unlikely friendship between Upton and Lucy Aragon, from "The Bachelor."

Ah, Lucy Aragon. Most of us remember Lucy best for her antics surrounding Juan Pablo Galavis, from that naked dog-walk around town to that hilarious appropriation of her former flame's most over-used phrase, "Ess Okay." Everyone needs someone like Aragon in their circle, and Upton has a place in her heart for this free-spirited hippie who is apparently "her best friend."

Though it was once rumored that Aragon had been dating Snapchat's CEO, there's no word as to whom she's currently writing ukelele songs about.

Hayden Panettiere had some fun in the sun this weekend while in Saint-Tropez, in southeastern France.

The 24-year-old, who is reportedly pregnant with her first child with fiance Wladimir Klitschko, was photographed in a black halter swimsuit on Sunday, June 8. Klitschko, Panetierre and friends were spotted swimming in the sea and hanging out on deck.

Us Weekly was the first to report on Panettiere's pregnancy last month. She and the 38-year-old boxing champion have been engaged for a year.

The "Nashville" star had previously spoken about expanding her family. "I've lived a very big life, and I don't feel my age, and I feel like I was born to be a mother," she told Glamour in 2013. "Sometimes people speak about [having kids] like, 'Your life ends -- you're never going to be able to do anything again!' And I'm like, 'What are you talking about?' Motherhood is the most beautiful, exciting thing, and there's nothing that I feel like I can't accomplish while having children in my life."

The 27-year-old shared a photo of her new retro look via Instagram on June 6. "Banged by @mararoszak," she captioned the pic, making sure to give a shout out to the hairstylist responsible for her new 'do.

Everyone Has Bad Hair Days

My hair is thick, wavy, curly, and extremely stubborn. It wasn't until I shifted from a traditional, sleek pixie to my current, messier 'do that I realized exactly how much my hair DID NOT want to be short, straight, and orderly. At least not all three at once. When I was doing the flat-ironed pixie thing, I had to go into the salon fairly frequently to get clean-ups or my hair would start puffing out and sticking up in odd places and at bizarre angles. This was time-consuming, and costly, and frustrating. When my hair did what I wanted it to do, I LOVED it. When it didn't, I got grouchy.

At one point I was whinging to my amazing stylist, airing my frustration that I couldn't get my hair to look exactly the same every single day. And her response was simple, and something I'd heard many times before. But hearing it at that moment from the person who cut and styled my hair struck me. Hard.

She said, "Well, everyone has bad hair days."

Obvious, right? Something we've all been told. Nothing groundbreaking. But I really heard her this time. And here's what occurred to me as I mulled afterward:

It is not reasonable to expect my own hair to look exactly the same every day because hair is living, because weather changes, because sometimes I sleep really weird or because I run late. There are dozens of reasons why my hair will not look exactly the same every day, even if I become quite skilled at styling it. Furthermore, it is not reasonable to expect my own hair to look "perfect" every day because perfect is an impossibility. Expecting same, perfect hair on a daily basis amounts to setting myself up for failure and frustration. Remembering that everyone has bad hair days means remembering that it's OK to look variable and even a little flat or disheveled once in a while.

It is not reasonable to expect anyone else's hair to look the same every day, and it certainly is not reasonable to expect anyone else's hair to look perfect every day. All people are subject to hair growth, weather, running late, and all the rest. Remembering that everyone has bad hair days means remembering that no one in this world looks her best every single day, and that judging others is a total waste of energy.

Furthermore, it is not reasonable to expect celebrities' hair to look the same or perfect, either. Even those who are professionally pretty have "off" days. This is one of the reasons why paparazzi-snapped images of famous people in their sweats or in the midst of hair or makeup failure are a force of evil. They reinforce the fallacy that someone who is famous, extraordinarily beautiful, and wealthy enough to employ various stylists can and should look perfect. All the time. Everyone has bad hair days. Even models like Cara Delevingne and movie stars like Reese Witherspoon. And there's absolutely nothing wrong or shameful about it.

Know what else? Everyone has bad outfit days, too. Me, you, strangers, famous people, all of us. No matter how skilled you are at outfit assembly or how well-versed you are in trends, figure-flattery, and color pairing, you will sometimes wear things that don't work. Even stylists like Stacy London will occasionally pull a dud that looked great in the morning but felt like a mistake by 4 p.m. This, too, is totally normal and should not cause you shame or dismay. By all means analyze what went awry and consider how to change your next outfit for the better, but don't beat yourself up over a day of frump or clash or over-accessorization. Bad outfits are as much a part of life as breathing, sleeping, changing seasons. And everyone in the world wears them occasionally.

I still strive for good hair and fabulous outfits, of course, but this mental and emotional shift has changed me. Now, when I glance in the mirror and see unfortunate things happening atop my head, I do my best to adjust my locks but I don't freak out. When an outfit I thought was dynamite looks totally bizarre after a few hours' wear, I make note of what's wrong but I don't berate myself. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone wears weird stuff. Everyone in this lovely world of ours has bad hair days. But luckily, the sun will rise again in the morning and we can have another go with the curling iron.

Mila Kunis Explains How Ashton Kutcher Went From Friend To Fiance, Talks 'Best' Proposal

Mila Kunis gives rare insight into her personal life for Marie Claire's July cover story.

The 30-year-old, who is expecting her first child with fiance Ashton Kutcher later this year, rarely speaks about love. Neither does Kutcher, who once said he is "going to do everything in my power to have this relationship be private." Their story, however, is well known -- they began dating in 2012 and are now engaged, though they have been friends since meeting on the set of "That '70s Show" back in 1998.

"One day, it just changed," Kunis said of their relationship. "All of a sudden, it wasn't the same. And I was really proud of myself for acknowledging that. The best day of my life so far was the proposal. I cried. I was a mess. Not to discredit any relationships in my past, but this relationship is different."

As for her birthing plan, Kunis says Kutcher will be in the delivery room when she gives birth to their baby, but the actress suggests he stay put in one particular position.

"Two people are allowed in my delivery room. My doctor and my significant other," Kunis told the mag. "And he is staying above the action. He'll be head to head. Not head to vag. Unless he wants to risk his life and see. But I wouldn't if I were him. I highly doubt he wants to see that being ripped apart and shredded. Because it will be shredded. It's just a matter of how badly."

With a baby and a wedding coming up, Kunis' life is certainly a whirlwind. Still, she is all about seizing opportunities that come her way these days. That's why, she tells Marie Claire, she embraced a Year of Yes.

"I was really good at saying no," Kunis said. "I decided I was just going to say yes to any opportunity that came, no matter how crazy. And it changed my life."

Check out Kunis' full interview in the July 2014 issue of Marie Claire, on newsstands June 24.

When Adriana Lima speaks, people listen.

In a World Cup ad for Kia, the Brazilian model interrupts American football practice by driving on the field. But nobody seems to mind.

"In my country, this is football," she says, flaunting a soccer ball.

Lesson learned, guys?

America's perceived indifference to soccer always makes for good joke material around the World Cup. But you know what would really be a hoot? If the U.S. team surprised naysayers and advanced from the "Group of Death."

Who'd be laughing then?

Miranda Kerr has already proven why she's one of the most successful women in the world. But in a recent interview, she debunks what we all thought was the key to her success -- being a model.

For the second time, Kerr covers The EDIT, Net-A-Porter's weekly magazine and looks amazing with a blazing smokey eye and an all around badass look. She gives readers some happy vibes with her positive outlook on life, health and career.

In the interview, Kerr makes it clear that she's not a model. "From my very first photo shoot at 14, I never saw myself as a model," she says, going on to explain her real title. "If someone asks me what I do, I say 'I have my own skincare line.' I don't define myself as a model," referring to her Managing Director role for her organic skincare line KORA Organics.

What we heard from Kerr is nothing new. Just last week Karlie Kloss told Into The Gloss that she also doesn't consider herself to be a professional model -- though Kloss has yet to figure out her official job title yet.

Why I Won't Praise Miss Indiana for Her Body

$
0
0
Lately, I have noticed a trend throughout social media encompassing women and men sharing and embracing their healthy, natural bodies, presumably in backlash to the glossy, unattainable images society feeds us. For the most part, I applaud these brave souls for their gumption. However, the responses these types of posts often elicit leave a sour taste in my mouth, as someone who has struggled deeply with valuing herself for what's on the inside.

Which leads me to Sunday's Miss USA Pageant. More specifically, the beautiful contestant from Indiana who has been singled out not for her heart of service or sharp mind, but for her shape and size. Of the many great things she has accomplished in her young life, we are lauding her for "not being a bag of bones."

Was I happy to see this particular competition embrace at least one person whose shape ever so slightly pushed the envelope? Absolutely. The reaction that has followed, however, is unnerving. Instead of celebrating diversity in an all-encompassing way, it has inadvertently reinforced that size, in this culture, does matter. That one's looks are far more important than the sum of his or her vast accomplishments in life. That one size is superior to another, and we must pick a side. It's curvy versus thin. But why? Not everyone's natural, healthy body falls neatly into one of two categories. And even if it did, why does it matter so much?

As someone who has worked extensively both in the fashion industry and at an eating disorder treatment center (interesting combo, I know), I have encountered countless women who battle a life-threatening eating disorder but whose healthy-looking bodies would warrant a "You go, girl!" if they were to participate in a pageant such as this one. In contrast, I also know many very svelte men and women who by no means are all plagued by eating disorder behaviors. Further, many of the people I know whose appearance would fall into the "ideal" category, as dictated by societal standards, are some of the unhappiest, most insecure people I know. My point? One can never assess one's state of health or degree of happiness simply by physical appearance alone. It's what's on the inside that counts, cheesy or not.

Eating disorders affect up to 20 million women and 10 million men in the United States. These illnesses do not discriminate against age, gender, skin color, zip code, religious faith, or yes, body type. I sincerely hope that Miss Indiana is in good health and living harmoniously with whatever shape or size is optimal for her. But simply because someone has a "normal" or "curvy" looking body does not necessarily mean they are healthy in mind, body, and spirit, nor is anyone somehow, in some way, superior because of a happy collision of genes or metabolic rate.

True beauty does not have a size. All bodies are beautiful, and the only way to lasting happiness is through acceptance.

Corset Queen Penny Brown Loves Getting 'Waisted'

Of corset hurts.

An Australian woman living in Okinawa, Japan, is stretching the boundaries of fashion by tightening her waist to extreme proportions.

Penny Brown, 25, has managed to shrink her middle section from 38 inches to 23 inches by wearing a corset 23 hours a day.

“I’ve always had a small waist, big hips and large boobs but I’m kind of a go-hard-or-go-home sort of person,” Brown told Barcroft TV. “I wanted to make that significantly more extreme, more dramatic, more stunning and more wonderful.”

penny brown 1

Brown started her corset training two years ago in an effort to match the exaggerated hourglass figure of Jessica Rabbit.

“I’ve been obsessed with Jessica Rabbit from a really early age,” Brown said, according to the Metro. “I think she is incredibly sexy and there’s a real power and strength to her character. I’ve always wanted to copy that –- at five I was already thinking about breast implants.”

Since 2012, Brown has had two surgeries to boost her already ample size H breasts to a whopping size O. She is now planning a third augmentation.

penny brown 3

When Brown first put on the corset in February, 2012, it was for some sexy shots for her husband, Cooper, 28, who was deployed overseas with the U.S. Air Force.

She soon took a liking to the feeling of the corset, which she likens to a permanent hug.

The first four months, she only took off her corset to shower, and admits it wasn't easy.

“It was tough at first,” she said, according to the Mirror. “The corset is not a magical tool that will make your waist tiny in a few months. It really was hard work and dedication on my part."

Brown lost 15 inches off her waist, partially because the restrictive nature of the corset forced some dietary changes.

“I stuck to little meals, and also things that incorporate liquid into the food -- like smoothies," she said, according to HuffPost UK. “One thing that was difficult was not being able to eat my favorite spicy foods –- because they would wreak havoc on my stomach when it was restricted in the corset.”

penny brown 4

Since her tightening transformation, Brown has become something of a corset-cult celebrity, and fetish model.

Medical experts believe extreme corset training has potential side effects, which is why most women left corsets behind in the Victorian Era.

Jyotindra Shah, a bariatric surgeon in Westchester, New York, says that long-term use of a corset can bruise internal organs, damage skin and restrict breathing.

Even worse, the lack of oxygenation as a result of wearing the corset might contribute to metabolic syndrome, which can actually result in weight gain.

"Putting this corset tight on the body could bruise your skin," Shah told The Huffington Post last October. "People might put it so tight that the liver, spleen and kidneys could get bruised."

Brown pooh-poohs the risks associated with corset training.

"I haven't experienced any ill effects and as far as I know, my organs haven't moved," she said, according to Reveal.co.uk. "The human body is amazing. There are only a few organs that can't be moved, and they tend to be protected by bones. The stomach is an incredibly resilient thing and it can withstand being squashed."
