If You Love YSL and Paris Fashion You Must Read This Juicy Story

0
0
It's 2007 and YSL, Pierre Berge, Sonia Rykiel, Emmanuelle Khahn and myself, all old and wrinkled and not so fabulous anymore are all seated par hazard on the same banquette in Paris. We were all five, by accident, eating at the Brasserie Lipp. It's impossible, but true. I thought I'd seen it all in my 50 years in Paris fashion, but this night was the magic moment for me, and I'm sure for the others. In French it's called La Denoument. This evening proves that success and happiness is not all about money.

Here's what happened. In early fall in 2007, Emmanuelle Khahn called me in my Paris shop at 21 Rue Bonaparte (like my new perfume) to tell me that she was retiring from fashion and wanted to celebrate alone with me. Could I meet her for a "verre" at the Cafe Flore and afterwards dinner at Lipp? I happily replied "Yes."

2014-06-12-image3.jpeg

EMMANUELLE KHAHN ruled Paris socially when I arrived in Paris in 1964 with my partner, Mia
Fonssagrives. Since 1956 Emmanuelle was the top established young designer in town.
She created the new French Pret a Porter industry in the 50s because having been the top model at Balanciaga, she felt couture did not show enough body. With her sometime partner Christiane Bailly, the Ye Ye dress business began. Michelle Rosier (the daughter of Elle Magazine publisher, Helene Lazareff), and later Karl Lagerfeld (who was working Pret a Porter for maison Royaume) all began the fashion world as we know it today. Emmanuelle, who in 2007 was mostly known for her signature oversized white eyeglasses, was going to now close down shop designing dresses, and live off her eyeglass royalties and "enjoy life."

As if she didn't already enjoy life, Emmanuelle, (an ex Balenciaga couture model) had lived in a pink marble palace in the Paris suburb of Garches with her Vietnamese artist/inventor husband, Quasar Khahn. It was the scene of the most fabulous pink-champagne parties of the 60s and 70s. You had to wear pink jewel encrusted ball gowns on Saturday night to match the pink marble art deco decor and you would meet European fashion and art royalty, movie stars, Crazy Horse strippers and the newest pop singers. She was our Parisian hostess with the mostest, along with Marie Helene de Rothschild who had a more boring horsey crowd at her palace, the Hotel Lambert across the street from my home on Quai Henri 4.

Our 2007 E.K. retirement celebration night started at the Cafe Flore while devouring champagne, Emmanuelle, (now divorced) told me that she's quitting because the Paris fashion industry has been destroyed by the takeover of the giant corporations who bought names to only brand them like cows and threw out the real designers. As we stared in the Dior window across the street on Place St Germaine de Pres, there were no clothes in the windows -- only handbags and shoes and perfume. Fine clothing was no longer profitable. Fashion clothing was unsalable, it was only for an overblown show for the press and for creating a brand.

After drinks, we crossed the street and walked into Lipp where we were immediately seated on the far wall banquette, the top spot where Mr Caze put only the most famous celebrities and in-favor politicians.

We were early and were placed in the center of the red leather banquette. Emmanuelle ordered more champagne ( I drank lemonade)and we proceeded to discuss the last years of fashion insanity. While we roared with hilarious laughter, in walks a somber Sonia Rykiel and her boyfriend, who are placed next to us on the banquette. "Bonjours" are passed around with kisses on both cheeks and then more somber silence. Minutes later Yves St Laurent and Pierre Berge walk into the Lipp revolving door and they are placed on our banquette next to Sonia and her beau. All per hazard. A deathly silence without a "bonjour" from Yves and Pierre and they don't ever talk to us or themselves.

Today I understand the significance of Sonia's mood; she has recently revealed that since 2007 she could no longer hide her Parkinson's Disease. But that night seven years ago she was so sad and miserable, and YSL was months away from dying. Everything was so sad to the right of me at the table that they felt like four souls who were waiting for an execution. I was told later by a fabric house salesman that we both shared, that the brilliant Yves at the end of his career drank an entire bottle of Scotch while buying fabric. That's only two hours to drink an entire bottle. I had over my desk a photo of the great Yves and his French bulldog, Moujik leaving work on Avenue George V for the last time in 2002. His head was down. It was to remind me to work until I die, like Coco.

I was so saddened to see the miserable designers next to me, we never said another word to them, nor they to us. However, they could not stop Emmanuelle and myself from having a wonderful evening of story telling, memories, horrible press reviews, and laughing until we cried -- even more so with the somber billionaires next to us!

Artists will all understand this story, they must. Fame and money do not buy happiness. Van Gogh and Rothko our most gifted painters killed themselves. L'Wren Scott just committed suicide. Artists understand they must tolerate suffering in order to create and few have ever been able to leave their craft, step back and smile with joy. I don't understand why, but it must be as Lady Gaga sang, they are "Born that Way."

Well, I'm still smiling. Today I sell copies of my 60s dresses on HSN TV. My next fragrance is called 1964 based on my 50 years on Paris fashion. I'm no billionaire, but I'm happy. So be it.

Vicky Tiel began designing clothes 40 years ago in Paris and still owns a boutique there. See Vicky and her new collection on HSN and online. Her couture is available at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, and her perfumes are carried in Perfumania. Her memoir, It's All About the Dress: What I Learned in 40 Years About Men, Women, Sex and Fashion was published by St. Martin's Press in August 2011.

Beauty Buzzwords Decoded

0
0
When it comes to body and haircare products, we often say it's what's inside that counts, choosing to focus on high quality ingredients over flashy packaging. But who truly understands the benefits behind all of the buzzwords? Here, I wanted to address frequently asked questions about common ingredients and environmental terms, so you can feel confident in choosing the best beauty products for your lifestyle.

What is the difference between perfume oils and essential oils?
Perfume oils are generally synthetic and have been created to smell like a specific plant, fruit, or other aroma. Essential oils are obtained directly from the plant, and offer many medicinal and aromatherapy properties that when breathed in, may uplift, relax, or balance the mood. The use of essential oils can replace the need to use harsh chemicals, mineral oils and artificial fragrances commonly found in other personal care products.

How about parabens versus preservatives?
Preservatives are a necessary part of all personal care products; without preservatives, liquids, creams and gels would breed bacteria. Parabens are a commonly known and used preservative in body and skincare products, but have been linked to cancer, toxicities and skin irritations. While a direct link has not been proven, many companies have chosen to eliminate parabens from their products, and use a gentler and more natural preservative system to ensure stability and safety.

And vegan versus cruelty-free?
Vegan refers to products, food, or a lifestyle devoid of animal-derived proteins and substances, including animal derivatives such as milk, eggs and honey. People following a vegan lifestyle rely on only plant- and earth-based substances and avoid using products that have been tested on animals (also known as cruelty-free). To determine if a product is vegan, it should not contain ingredients in the following categories:
-- Bee-derived, such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly, or propolis
-- Milk-derived, such as lactic acid or milk proteins
-- Marine-derived collagen or oils
-- Carmine (coloring from beetles)

What are UREA, DEA, TEA, Propylene and Phthalates?
Widely used in body and skincare products, many people choose to avoid these chemically-derived ingredients:
UREA is chemically derived ingredient found in many body and skincare products. It's used as a preservative and conditioning agent which can release formaldehyde, a known carcinogenic.
DEA is a synthetic surfactant that aids in foaming, and has been linked to development and reproductive toxicity at high doses ranging from birth defects to development delays in children to infertility to reproductive organ cancers.
TEA is a fragrance ingredient, pH adjuster, surfactant and emulsifying agent. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review has placed restrictions on this ingredient regarding the concentration amounts. There is evidence showing this ingredient to be an immune and respiratory toxicant meaning there are health problems ranging from allergic reactions to an incapacity to fight disease and repair damaged tissue in the body.
Phthalates work as softeners in personal care products such as cosmetics and shampoo and have been tied to cancer and as being carcinogenic.

What is PCR?
PCR is Post-Consumer Recycled content or material in the form of papers, plastics, aluminum, etc. Collections made with PCR materials are able to be recycled again, further extending the environmental benefits.

What is the benefit of vegetable ink?
Soy-based inks are used on paper and carton printing as they are naturally low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Soy beans are a clean renewable and sustainable resource, unlike the alternative petroleum or chemicals found in traditional inks. Soy ink is also easier to remove from paper during the recycling process than oil-based ink.

Colorado Ballet Company Proves Dancers Have Way More Fun Than The Rest Of Us

0

Dancers are relentless in their quest to prove that the twist of a limb and the contortion of a trunk can amount to the most beautiful shapes and forms. And they seem to have convinced even the most skeptical among us. “We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once," Friedrich Nietzsche famously proclaimed in Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, for one, seems to be upholding the philosopher's dictate rather nicely. In a series of photos captured by Los Angeles-based photographer Jana Cruder, the company can be seen jumping and turning amidst clouds of pigment. As if you needed further evidence that ballet's finest have more fun than the rest of us, this series does the trick.

"Being commissioned by the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company was a dream," Cruder explained to HuffPost. "We were set to shoot in Aspen and prior to shooting for them I asked if I could see them preform... I was so moved by how these young artists expressed themselves and how sound and color shaped my emotion."

The photo shoot was cleverly inspired by Rorschach inkblots. "I wanted to do something different, something beautiful and soulful. I wanted to paint with color while they painted with the motion of their bodies in beautiful unison," Cruder added. "Researching the ink blots, I set out to emulate and re-create the beautiful exploration in symmetry only with human form and color." The results are blow:

Angelina Jolie Named Honorary Dame, Daniel Day-Lewis Receives Knighthood

0
0
LONDON (AP) — Angelina Jolie can add royal recognition to Hollywood stardom. The Oscar-winning actress has been named an honorary dame — the female version of a knight — by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

Jolie, a United Nations special envoy, received the honor on Friday for her work combating sexual violence in war zones. Jolie, who won a supporting actress Academy Award in 2000 for "Girl, Interrupted," has spoken of scaling back her movie roles to focus on humanitarian work. She said that "to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to."

Because she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie won't be entitled to use the title "dame" before her name. Previous U.S recipients of honorary knighthoods include director Steven Spielberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former President Ronald Reagan.

Jolie, who was in London this week to co-host an international summit on sexual violence, was among hundreds of people recognized in the queen's annual Birthday Honors List for services to their community or national life.

Most of the honors go to people who are not in the limelight — from soldiers and civil servants to academics and entrepreneurs — but there is always a sprinkling of famous names.

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis was made a knight "for services to drama" and can now call himself Sir Daniel. The actor, who won Academy Awards for "My Left Foot," ''There Will Be Blood" and "Lincoln," said he was "entirely amazed and utterly delighted in equal measure."There were damehoods for novelist Hilary Mantel, author of the prize-winning Tudor page-turners "Wolf Hall" and "Bring Up the Bodies," and for fashion designer Zandra Rhodes.

Actress Maggie Smith, who plays the imperious Dowager Countess of Grantham on TV's "Downton Abbey," was made a Companion of Honor, an award limited to 65 people "of distinction."

"Homeland" star Damian Lewis was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE.

The British actor said he was "very surprised but very happy" with the honor.

"I decided to do the very un-British thing of accepting the compliment," Lewis said.

OBEs also went to Beatles expert and author Hunter Davies, musician Talvin Singh, and John Simpson, longtime editor of the Oxford English Dictionary.

In the field of science, there was a knighthood for physicist Thomas Kibble, whose work contributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson — the so-called "God particle."

Among those honored for charity work was the late Stephen Sutton, a teenager who raised 4 million pounds ($6.8 million) while battling terminal cancer. Sutton, who died in May at age 19, was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE.

Sylvia Lancaster, who founded a campaign against hate crime after her daughter, Sophie, was attacked and killed by a gang of youths in 2007 because of her Goth appearance, received an OBE.

Recipients covered a wide range of achievements, from confectioner Chantal Coady, honored "for services to chocolate making," to civil service debt manager Barry Cox — "for services to debt" — and Arthur Dean, president of the Dwarf Sports Association. He was recognized for services to people with restricted growth and to disabled sport.

Britain's honors are bestowed by the monarch, but recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

In descending order, the honors are knighthoods; Commander of the Order of the British Empire or CBE; OBE; and MBE. Knights are addressed as "sir" or "dame." Recipients of the other honors have no title, but can put the letters after their names.

Kylie Jenner Finally Gives Up On Blue Hair Color

RIP Kylie Jenner's electric blue hair. The youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner cabal, has traded in her ombre look for a one-color head of hair. Jenner posted the photo below on Instagram and wrote "back to black."

She posted another photo with her sister Kendall, showing that she is done expressing her punk rock teen angst side (at least on her head). Goodbye cool Kylie hair.

This Week's Worst Dressed List Made Us Very Sad

0
0
This week, many stars struggle with ill-fitting clothes on the worst-dressed list.

Sarah Jessica Parker's petite figure was literally drowning in a massive gown, Zosia Mamet should have taken a trip to the tailor and Angelina Jolie's pants could have doubled as a parachute.

Check out our least favorite looks of the week and let us know if you agree.

Mindy Kaling

mindy

Kaling's dress looks like an optical illusion gone wrong. The dizzying pattern and her heavy eye makeup make this ensemble a major flop.

Sarah Jessica Parker

sjp

This nightgown, erm, dress, really needs to be shortened, taken in and scaled back.

Cate Blanchett

cate

There is such a thing as too many ruffles and this dress is the perfect example. We were willing to look past the poor fit and dowdy silhouette, but excessive ruffles is where we draw the line.

Angelina Jolie

angie

Wide-leg pants are one of the biggest trends right now, but proportion is key so you don't end up swimming in them, like Jolie is here.

Jennifer Lopez

jlo

Hey J.Lo, 1999 called and they want their outfit back.

Florence Welch

florence

We love throwback-inspired looks, but this is taking things a little too far back. With her John Lennon-esque glasses, the '70s print dress and tassel purse, there is no modern touch to help and bring this outfit into the 21st century.

Jaime King

king

It looks like she threw on a bunch of tangled necklaces and a pound of black eyeshadow before hitting the red carpet.

Sophia Bush

sophia

You're not Rihanna so...

Zosia Mamet

zosia

Mamet is a stunning actress, but this frock isn't doing her any favors. The overly sweet color paired with those stark black pumps is a little jarring, not to mention the fact that the fit of her dress looks a little off.

Bright Colors And Classic Silhouettes Top The Best Dressed List This Week

This week we saw bright, bold and sassy looks on the red carpet and we couldn't be happier about it.

Jessica Alba stole the show in red, Chrissy Teigen made the most difficult color work and Rose Byrne shone (literally) in a navy gown.

Check out our favorite looks of the week and let us know if you agree.

Chrissy Teigen in Three Floor

chrissy

Of course she looks amazing in this yellow minidress. The asymmetrical hemline, subtle cut-outs and strapless neckline perfectly complement the model's figure.

Jessica Alba in Preen

jessica alba

It's so refreshing to see such a bright and bold color on the red blue carpet. And who says you can't match your lipstick to your outfit?

Eva Longoria in Max Mara

eva

Oh, the power of a crisp white shirt and black trousers. Longoria has a tendency to go overboard with her outfits, but this simple ensemble is so effortless and chic. Though the actress is actually wearing a jumpsuit, it looks like separates and also like something we could easily copy.

Rose Byrne in Max Mara

rose

The shimmer, the deep-V, the rich color -- we're not sure what our favorite element of this dress is. There are so many to choose from.

Yao Chen in J. Mendel

yao

Chen is pretty in pink in this strapless, minimal gown. The boning on the top adds the perfect amount of elegance, while her red lips makes her look just sultry enough.

Adriana Lima in Jason Wu

adriana

Slinky, sexy and sparkly? This dress is a triple threat.

Alessandra Ambrosio in Camilla and Marc

If you're ever in doubt about what to wear in the summer, a LWD (little white dress) is always the answer.

One of America's most iconic clothing companies is introducing a special new line, just in time for LGBT Pride Month.

The Levi's Pride collection includes both men's and women's T-shirts as well as unisex tank top, all emblazoned with the jean company's iconic "batwing" logo in rainbow colors, as well as "PRIDE 2014" stamp on the back. The products are available throughout June at select stores in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

"Equality is not something we just wear; it’s woven into the fabrics of our principles," Levi's officials said in an email statement, as proceeds from the sales of the line will benefit local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organizations.

The company has been an outspoken advocate of LGBT-related causes for some time. In 1992, Levi Strauss & Co was the first to offer benefits to same sex couples, according to press materials.

In 2012, Target introduced a line of 10 Pride T-shirts, including two designed by Gwen Stefani, as part of a decade-long partnership with the Family Equality Council, a Washington, D.C.-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group.

Similarly, Nike expanded its rainbow-hued #BeTrue shoe and clothing line last year, with profits donated to the LGBT Sports Coalition.

Kim Kardashian's Bonnaroo Outfit Is A See-Through Top

Most Bonnaroo-goers dress for the farm: beat-up sneakers, tie dye tank top, a bandana, jorts, etc. Maybe there's a crocheted crop top if you want to get all Coachella in Manchester, TN. But, naturally, Kim Kardashian opted for something a little more city-slick when she watched husband Kanye West perform at the festival for the first time since 2008.

Kim wore a sheer shirt, white jeans -- think of the mud! -- and high heels as she watched the Yeezus performance from backstage.

After the show, the newlyweds drank from goblets and soaked in each other's awesomeness. "#YASSSSSS just rocked Bonnaroo," she wrote.

Why 'Pretty Little Liars' Lucy Hale's Hair Is Our New Obsession

The editors at HuffPost Style are shamelessly addicted to the teen drama "Pretty Little Liars." From the cast's killer wardrobe both on and off-screen to the dark storylines that tug at our heartstrings, an in-office recap session can go on for hours.

Now that Season 5 has started with the shocking surprise of who "A" really is, we've become totally immersed in the "PLL" fandom. Plus, actress and singer Lucy Hale's hair is enough to get us in front of the television.

Hale, who portrays Aria Montgomery on the ABC Family series, has the thickest and shiniest hair. The Mark cosmetics spokeswoman told People that the secret to her stunning hair is a "twice-a-week" shampooing schedule and dry texturizing spray. But, we still can't believe that it's just that simple.

As Hale celebrates her 25th birthday on Saturday, we're taking a look back at her best hair moments. We wouldn't be surprised if you bookmark this feature on your mobile phone or tablet to show your stylist at your next salon appointment.

Even with a jam-packed summer schedule of outdoor parties and beach trips, some days, we’d rather just stay in. But, we never want to miss out on anything (and, besides, our couch still has a butt indent from the long winter), so we do actually have to get off the sofa sometimes. However, even when we’re out and about, we can still be as comfy as we would be chillin’ at home.

Cat People Way More Likely To Date Dog People Than Vice Versa. Plus Other Fun Facts About Pets And Dating

0
0
If you're single and ready to mingle, run to your local animal shelter. Now.

A survey by Match.com and PetSmart Charities released last month shows that the rumors are true -- man's best friend might also be man's best wingman. And getting your pet from a shelter doesn't hurt, either.

According to the survey, 59 percent of respondents would perceive their date as more attractive if they found out he or she had adopted, rather than bought, their pet. What's more, 25 percent of women have been more attracted to someone because of their pet, and almost half put faith in their dog's judgement of their dates!

But things get a little touchy when it comes to mixing cat people with dog people. While those who fancy felines are much more open to the idea -- 97 percent of cat owners would have a relationship with a "dog person" -- just 66 percent of dog owners would be open to being more than friends with a cat person. Ouch.

Here are a few other eye-opening results from the survey:

  • Men are four times more likely to use their pets to attract a potential date.

  • Nearly six out of 10 men think their date's choice in pets says a lot about their personality.

  • 35 percent of single women have been more attracted to someone because of their pet.

12 Times The Women Of 'Game Of Thrones' Were Super Fierce

0

For all of us die-hard "Game Of Thrones" fans, this Sunday is a sad one. The season four finale is upon us, and while it's rumored to be the best yet, Sundays without GoT are no Sundays at all.

While the men of GoT are badass in their own right, from Jon Snow's daring adventures beyond the wall to Tyrion Lannister's perpetual wit (seriously, if Tyrion dies I will riot), it's the ladies who kick some serious ass -- and they don't even need a sword to do it. And although not all of the female characters are beloved (Cersei Lannister better get the "Red Wedding" treatment pronto), there's no denying that they're all impressively fierce.

In honor of these killer female characters, we've put together a list of 12 times the ladies of "Game Of Thrones" were way fiercer than the men over the past four seasons:

1. When Daenerys Targaryen supported #YesAllWomen without even realizing it.

2. That time Brienne of Tarth fought a bear... and lived.

Damn you, Chrissy Teigen! Not only do you have a smoking hot body, bubbly personality and a sexy singing husband, but you've also got some seriously stunning hair.

7 Times Prince George Looked Just As Dapper As His Daddy
