Juicy Couture Closing All U.S. Stores: Report

Juicy Couture is drying up.

The California clothing brand famous for its rhinestone-bedazzled tracksuits is shutting down all of its U.S. stores by the end of June, according to the fashion news site Racked.

The struggling label's parent company, Fifth & Pacific Companies -– now renamed Kate Spade & Company -– sold it fall to Authentic Brands Group.

More than 60 international stores will remain open, Racked reported. But employees at several locations in Los Angeles told the site that all brick-and-mortar stores in the U.S. are closing down. Juicy's website lists more than 100 boutiques and outlet stores in North America.

Haley Steinberg, a spokeswoman for Authentic Brands Group, did not immediately respond to a call and email from The Huffington Post on Friday requesting comment.

The move comes as Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, the brand’s two founders, are launching a new label, Pam & Gela, out of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Authentic Brands Group struck a deal this week with shoe-making giant Steve Madden to design Juicy’s new line of women’s footwear.

Last November, Kohl’s announced a non-exclusive deal to start selling Juicy clothes. The shift to a big-box retailer was perceived as a death knell for the once-posh fashion brand.

Juicy’s signature terrycloth tracksuits were a staple of women’s casual style in the early- to mid-2000s, alongside UGG boots and North Face fleece pullovers. When Juicy first sold in 2003 to Liz Claiborne Inc. –- as Fifth & Pacific was then known -– The New York Times said the company had been “built from a $200 start-up to a $51 million concern” in just six years.

“We are a lifestyle brand and we have a weirdly large demographic, from kids to 65-year-olds,” Taylor told the Times at the time.

But 11 years later, that demographic appears to have shrunken in the wash.

Our Jaws Dropped After Seeing All The Beautiful Looks On This Week's Best Dressed List

Ladies, take note -- this is how you get dressed.

Over the past couple of days, Hollywood has been upping its style game and we are très impressed. Poppy Delevingne wore an unexpected black floral dress that left us awestruck, Kiernan Shipka was her usual adorable self in a pink strapless number and America Ferrera made a strong case for the color red in a show-stopping ensemble.

Check out the best-dressed stars of the week and let us know if you agree with our picks.

America Ferrera

america

Ferrera is a total bombshell in this tight red dress. Not only does it hug her curves in all the right places, the bold hue really pops against her dark hair and olive complexion.

Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé

kidman

Nicole Kidman is a dead ringer for Grace Kelly in this stunning strapless gown. The intricate beading and creamy ivory color are the picture of elegance. Kidman's black belt and shoes may seem a little heavy for such a delicate dress, but we are willing to look past it as the rest of the ensemble is spot on.

Nicola Peltz in Prada

paltz

The "Transformers" star looked statuesque in this iridescent blue column dress with crystal embellishments. Despite the major cut-out on front, the dress is balanced out by the longer hemline and high neck line.

Poppy Delevingne in Vivienne Westwood Gold Label

poppy

Every single thing about this outfit is impeccable. The dress is an interesting take on the floral trend; it helps that it looks like it has been expertly draped, as the asymmetrical neckline is hanging off of her body perfectly. Nude pumps were also a great choice with this otherwise busy ensemble, while Delevingne's pulled back hair really shows off that fierce red lipstick.

Kiernan Shipka in Marni

shipka

Cute, fashion-forward, age-appropriate -- Shipka's dress embodies everything she's known for.

Chrissy Teigen in Elisabetta Franchi

chrissy

Teigen clearly knows that white and gold is one of the best color combinations out there. Her short, plunging dress is great for the warm weather, while her slicked back hair is an easy way to avoid summer frizz.

Kate Middleton in Alexander McQueen

kate

Yes, we may have seen the Duchess in this outfit before, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The military-inspired top and skirt are a nice change from the feminine dresses we normally see her wear.

Best Tweets: What Women Said On Twitter This Week

One of the best Twitter conversations this week was started by our esteemed colleagues at HuffPost Celebrity, who created the clever #BeyoncePickupLines. Melissa M had the entire HuffPost Lady Corner laughing when she tweeted: "Hey girl, you on Tinder? Because I'd never swipe you to the left, to the left. #BeyoncePickupLines." Bey + witty humor = perfection.

#BeyoncePickupLines must have sent Twitter into a Queen B craze because there were multiple funny ladies talking about Yoncé all week. Rebecca Shapiro couldn't seem to shake Beyoncé, even when texting: "Just tried to type 'beyond' and automatically typed 'beyonce' so that’s where I’m at on this Thursday afternoon." Damn autocorrect.

In other news, we were so excited to get some clues about "Pitch Perfect 2" from Anna Kendrick who tweeted, "Good news from the set of Pitch Perfect. Beca still mostly wears long pants and boots, so I basically never have to shave my legs. Or feet." We are SO excited!

Christmas came early this year, ladies. And by that we mean, it's Pitti Uomo.

For those of you not familiar, Pitti Uomo is a biannual trade show in Florence, Italy where retailers, buyers, and editors come together to view upcoming menswear collections -- long story short, it's four days of gorgeous boys, dressed to the nines, walking down cobblestone Italian streets, looking impossibly dapper.

Forget New York fashion week, heck, forget Paris fashion week -- next year, we want to go to Firenze to check out the stunning men clothes in person.

Most of us go to great lengths to get amazing hair: We’ll take supplements to boost thickness, try any and all products to amp up shine, and spend hours in the salon chair getting fitted with extensions to enjoy new levels of volume and length. This latest craze coming out of Brazil, however, takes the cake for inventiveness, with women going above and beyond in the pursuit of longer hair.

Happy 32nd birthday, Prince William!

It has been quite a year for the Duke of Cambridge, taking on the role of doting father to the adorable and dapper Prince George. Though we've come to know and love William over the years, his almost 1-year-old son is the ultimate trendsetter and style star in the family now.

But today we're celebrating the birth of the handsome Prince William by showing all the times he and his son made strikingly similar facial expressions. It's become pretty clear that lil' G inherited the ability to look sassy, brooding and charming all at once from his suave dad.

There Were Some Ugly Outfits On This Week's Worst Dressed List

$

This week, more than one A-lister flopped in the wardrobe department. Unfortunately.

Jessica Alba chose the wrong color for her skin tone, Mel B went way too short and Eva Longoria just looked hot (as in, she was probably sweating in her leather dress in the middle of June).

Check out our least favorite looks of the week, and for the love of god, don't copy any of these outfits.

Kaley Cuoco

kaley

If you're able to make it past the Kate Gosselin hair, this outfit is almost equally as egregious. Though the matching top and pant combo is all the rage right now, this particular set is just plain ugly. The texture is bizarre and the cut of the top is unflattering.

Laura Vandervoort

laura

Is it just us, or does this look a little like a figure skating costume?

Deborah Ann Woll

dress

The "True Blood" actress actually picked a great silhouette for her body, but the weird brown band around her midsection makes it look like they ran out of fabric to finish the dress. Not to mention the fact that the earthy color palette seem a little dull for summer.

Eva Longoria

eva

Just when we thought Longoria was on a winning streak, she goes and wears this. First of all, it's about nine hundred degrees outside, so she must be boiling hot in this leather number. And secondly, a leather dress is enough of a statement on its own, there is no need to add ruffles and bows and exaggerated sleeves.

Mel B

mel

Well that's one short skirt. One wrong move and we would get an eye full. And even if we were willing to look past the micro mini, the black stretchy top doesn't quite work on the red carpet, it's too casual.

Chloe Grace Moretz

chloe

How did our favorite fashionista end up on this list? Well, it's probably because of the weird harness details on her dress. Unless she is preparing to do a stunt, we're not having it.

Jessica Alba

jessica

This color is making Alba's skin look orange.

Rosamund Pike

pike

Pike's dress isn't great, but it's the super casual mesh jacket that she is wearing over top that is making us scratch our heads.

East Carolina's Pirates Show No Quarter When It Comes to Fashion

$

"No mercy, no prisoners -- no quarter!" That phrase, a rallying call to your dastardly crew undoubtedly shooting fear through the veins of your enemies, is shouted in the final moments of battle to let your opponent know that you're not interested in taking prisoners. Instead, you're going to stake your rightful claim as victor. Though you might not find pillaging, looting and swashbuckling pirates on the campus of East Carolina University (unless it's the weekend), you will find a sense of relentless pride from the moment you enter Pirate Nation.

ECU is located in the city of Greenville, North Carolina, and if there is any speculation on how to find it, just look for the purple and gold. Home to southern charm, sweet tea and B's Barbecue, this college town has quite a lot to offer. However, if you're looking for a getaway, our state's capital, the beach and some breathtaking mountain ranges are all within a day's drive. Even though road trips are fairly popular, it's just as easy to spend a lazy, sunny day kicking back on the Tar River.

While those days could be spent wearing one of West End dining hall's finest pajama combinations, ECU always knows how to dress to impress. Whether they're rocking their pirate pride in all shades of purple and gold or through the latest fashion trends, the relentless attitude of showing "no quarter" is ever present when it comes to on campus style.

The great thing about our campus fashion is how much it varies depending on the student! You can find our Fashionistos wearing anything from graphic T-shirts to bow ties, and our Fashionistas in preppy styles down to '90s grunge. Our wide selection of academic interests inspire different trends across campus, but this Fashionista's look is the perfect example of one thing we're pretty well-known for -- our sweet Carolina girls.

As much as The Beach Boys and Katy Perry might think that California girls have it going on, at ECU, we live by the words of General Johnson and the Chairman of the Board, "Carolina girls, best in the world!" The typical Carolina girl's fashion revolves around southern simplicity. Eyelet detailing and cocktail length dresses are quite common on campus, and partnered with an ankle bootie to complete the look.

While normally a pair of cowgirl boots would be a campus-wide go-to for such an outfit, this Fashionista's use of fringe ankle booties puts a charming twist on this classic ensemble. Immediately this look jumps from southern belle to boho-chic babe. Her floppy hat, layered bangles and round frame sunnies, were the perfect accessories to transform the style into her own. The use of a simple white dress as the outfit's base was the perfect choice for a Fashionista looking to experiment with personal flare!

As I mentioned earlier, academic interest plays a major role when it comes to campus fashion. For this Fashionista, her passion for art, design and textiles work comes into play. A history in fabric construction was the final touch this outfit needed, as this Fashionista crafted the faux fur snood you see around her neck by hand. Creativity and a killer sense of style partner up to show off this Fashionista's true talent when it comes to art and textile design, as well as, show what being a fashion-forward pirate is all about -- originality.

The "no quarter" flag has been raised, and the bar for fashion has been set high on this campus. A well-dressed student body with endless dedication for the school they attend is an intimidating match for any opponent, but these pirates aren't always looking for battle. They're looking to map their course, and set sail towards the ultimate treasure -- a degree. For now, the words of the great Captain Jack Sparrow say it best, "Life's pretty good, and why wouldn't it be? I'm a pirate, after all."

Deborah Lindquist: The New Summer Trend: Pattern Play

By Deborah Lindquist

While last year was the year of the stripe, spring/summer 2014 has introduced a new trend, the year of the print.

As we know, sometimes trends appear, flutter round a bit and die, while others seem to take the world by storm. If you hadn't already noticed, prints are everywhere. Graphic, retro, artistic, romantic, you name it. They are all here, sometimes worn in combination with each other, and creating a big stir.

With so many options, where to start and what to choose? Your personality, color of your skin and hair, your lifestyle are certainly factors. Pale girls might choose a subtle print that doesn't overpower their complexion and hair color while girls with a darker skin tone and/or vivid hair colors can rock a print with more pop. Choosing the right print is about balance. The print should enhance your beauty, not distract from it.

Subtle tones
A feminine retro girl with pale skin might choose a floral pattern such as the 1040's romantic floral on this bustier. The subtle tones compliment her skin tone while offering a pop of color to make the print interesting and fun. Pairing a colorful print with a neutral toned skirt such as this vintage parachute skirt keeps the look unique and on trend without becoming overwhelming.

Big versus allover prints
If an allover print is just not your thing, a larger artistic image or an applique such as the lilies on this applique cashmere sweater could be a great choice. Prints can found as big as you can imagine or small, mellow and subtle. With that in mind, the sweater with the spaced- out lilies would look great worn with a dress made of a fabric similar to the curtain fabric behind it, just in case you change your mind about the allover idea.

In mixing prints, keep in mind the mix needs to be relatable in some way, (such as similar colors) to keep your look from becoming too busy. Or crazy.

Graphic prints
The race for space in the 1960s brought us not only the technology for space travel, but a new and inspiring influence in textile design. Graphic prints such as the vintage 1960s print on this bustier were abundant at that time and are today translated into the current graphic pattern trend we're seeing in fashion. With a print as bold, colorful and vivid as this, the best way to wear it is with something black, maybe easy black trousers. I'm sure we an all have those in our closets!

We'll admit it: We like it when our clothes get noticed, especially when we're aiming to get noticed ourselves. But, our idea of sexy isn't necessarily hanging on store racks of going-out clothes. For some of us, body-cons, extreme cutouts, and plunging necklines simply aren't our bag, no matter how much we love them on other people. Instead, we turn to more understated picks that happen to be really fetching. Because, we know printed culottes and an off-the-shoulder dress can be just as alluring as something more daring -- as long as they're worn with confidence.

Halle Berry Represents For Women With Short Hair On This Week's Best & Worst Beauty List

When Halle Berry hits the red carpet, she commands everyone's attention.

The 47-year-old actress turned heads at the Los Angeles premiere for the upcoming sci-fi TV series "Extant." Dressed in a gunmetal gray Jenny Packham dress and black Christian Louboutin heels, Berry wowed with her signature pixie haircut. The textured bangs fell perfectly against her flawless complexion and drew us in to her metallic eyeliner.

Keep scrolling down to find out why Halle Berry stands out on this week's best and worst beauty list.

BEST: Halle Berry

Berry's pixie is always on point! And we love how she enhances her gorgeous caramel skin with the right amount of eye makeup and blush.

BEST: Bailey Noble

The "True Blood" actress is a doppelganger for model Petra Nemcova with her voluminous waves, winged-out liner and glossy lips.

BEST: Olivia Wilde

Even though we're over ombre hair, we can't help but love Wilde's natural-looking highlights which mimic her bronze eyeshadow.

BEST: Molly Sims

Sims embodies classic American beauty with her tousled, blonde locks and rosy glow. The subtle white liner along her lower waterline makes her haze eyes pop.

WORST: Cara Santana

Jesse Metcalfe's girlfriend broke a cardinal beauty rule by brushing her smokey eyeshadow up way too high. It's such a shame to see her beautiful face covered in so much eye makeup.

WORST: Annie Wersching

annie wersching

We're not exactly sure what look the "24" actress was trying to achieve with this big-and-teased hairdo that's giving us bad '80s flashbacks.

WORST: Ellen Page

ellen page

Kudos to Page for experimenting with a sultry cat-eye, but the wrong placement (and shade) of blush comes across as though she rushed with her makeup.

WORST: Lorelei Linklater

The budding actress' facial expression says it all: she doesn't look too happy with this unflattering shade of black lipstick.

9 Reasons Meryl Streep Will Always Be Our Leading Lady

$
0
0
Happy birthday, Meryl Streep! Hollywood's indisputable sweetheart is 65 today and we can't believe it. Not only is she looking fantastic, but the woman is on fire. Over 35 years since her first Oscar win as a newcomer to Tinseltown, Queen M was a nominee for the 18th, yes, 18th, time at this year's Oscar's for her performance in "August Osage County," making her the most nominated actress in history. And though she's a bit older than the average Hollywood actress, she's defying all odds, still being one of the industry's most sought-after actresses with several upcoming films in the works.

We get it, Mer. You're unstoppable. Here are nine reasons Meryl will always be the woman of our dreams. (Is there anything she can't do?)

1. She's one smart cookie.
She's played a prime minister and an Editor-in-Chief on screen, but Streep would have been just as successful if Hollywood hadn't come knocking. She attended both Vassar College and Yale's School of Drama. In fact, she reportedly had applied for law school, but ended up oversleeping the morning of her interview and took it as a sign that she was destined for something else.

2. Her many accents.
From a sassy Southerner, to British iron lady, to a straight-talking nun in the Bronx, the Jersey-made actress can pull off any, we mean any, accent like a native. Here's the proof.

3. She's charitable.
Her enviable designer duds from "The Devil Wears Prada" were auctioned off for charity at her suggestion. She donated her entire salary ($1 million) from "The Iron Lady" to the National Women's History museum. And recently it was uncovered that Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, have donated around $1 million to a variety of causes, including Meals On Wheels and the Coalition for the Homeless, quietly through their charity, the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts. Saint Meryl?

4. Her body confidence.
There's nothing sexier than confidence and well, Meryl just wears it well. "I wasted so many years thinking I wasn't pretty enough and why didn't I have Jessica Lange's body or someone else's legs?" Streep said in a 2009 interview. "What a waste of time. Now I'm enjoying the tatters of what's left and I'm very happy. Part of it is having beautiful strong daughters and hearing them whine about what's wrong with them. I'm like, 'Shut up! You're lovely!'"

5. She's grounded.
You won't see any diva-like behavior here. "I try to lead as ordinary a life as I can," Streep has been quoted as saying. "You can't get spoiled if you do your own ironing."

Perhaps it was her humble start that keeps her so down to earth. Streep waited tables in her 20s and once didn't even have a place to sleep at night.

"On my very, very first trip to London I went around busking to earn a few pennies to afford some food and overnight accommodation," she told Closer Magazine. "One night, when I hadn't made enough, I actually slept in the open in Green Park under a tree. The view from the park was of the Ritz hotel, and I vowed to myself that night that I was going to stay there one day -– and I have."

6. She has a kickass marriage.
meryl streep don gummer

Streep has been married over 35 years to sculptor Don Gummer, avoiding the "Oscar Curse" many times. Streep has said the key to her marriage has been communication about everything, no matter how small and to embrace your differences. "I go to the theatre a lot," she told The Independent. "My husband doesn't care if he never goes to the theatre but I don't berate him because he doesn't want to go to the theatre ... we're different."

7. She's embracing aging, gracefully.
Streep has had some of her most challenging and memorable roles after turning 50, though the majority of roles in Hollywood are for younger women. “The good thing about getting older is that when they actually do cast you it’s often something interesting,” Streep said in an interview with Good Housekeeping. "You have to embrace getting older. Life is precious... each day is a gift.”

Earlier this year Streep was honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and said, ""I feel like I'm an example now in my dotage of the fact that you just can't put those old gals out to pasture. We've got a lot of stuff still to say." You go girl!

8. She's a feminist.
meryl streep hillary clinton

She's no doubt played some strong female figures -- Britain's only female prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" to culinary genius Julia Child -- but she still thinks women are underrepresented in Hollywood and beyond. "'It would be nice to have a woman President. I think half the Senate should be women, half of Parliament, half the ruling mullahs" she once said. It seems she's a big fan of Hillary Clinton too.

Streep has also been outspoken about the sexualization of women in Hollywood. Following "the period when a woman was attractive and marriageable or something—not ‘marriageable.’ F******* I guess is the word…they really didn’t know what to do with you…” She said in an interview with Vanity Fair. Streep credits her success to not being pigeonholed in the same way.

9. She's perfectly comfortable in her own skin, and that's what makes her a great role model.
"For young women, I would say, don’t worry so much about your weight. Girls spend way too much time thinking about that, and there are better things," Streep said after being awarded an honorary degree earlier this year. "For young men, and women, too, what makes you different or weird, that’s your strength. Everyone tries to look a cookie-cutter kind of way, and actually the people who look different are the ones who get picked up. I used to hate my nose. Now, I don’t.”

Well, there you have it.

Don't Act Your Age

2014-06-20-butterfly1.jpg

How old do you feel? I feel about 30. Then I look in the mirror, and I don't see a 30-year-old. What I do see is someone who looks pretty good, is active and healthy, and has a serious spark to her. Sure there are days when I feel farther from 30, but I'm learning to live in the moment instead of staring down the barrel of age. I've decided not to act my age. Here's how I do it.

Find something you love and do it every day
Having passion in your life is more effective than any youth serum on the market. Find something that brings you joy and do it with energy and enthusiasm. It can be anything: cooking, parenting, working, dancing, volunteering, ice hockey. Find something that gets you excited to wake up in the morning.

Be lighthearted
A smile can take years off your face. Let's take a minute to stop taking ourselves, our work and our lives so seriously and be a little goofy. Make a point to have fun and laugh every day. Think of something that makes you feel happy and light and add it to your daily routine. For me, it's music and dancing.

Be flexible
If something stops working for you, change it. If you keep trying something and it doesn't work, whether it's a job, a relationship or a habit, do something else. Getting stuck in old patterns is what ages us in a negative way. I've learned to be flexible through practice... lots of practice.

Take risks
I've always liked taking risks. It's exciting. It opens you up to change and growth. When you take a risk and it works out it's especially gratifying. And when it doesn't, it's a chance to learn.

Bring the lessons and leave the baggage
It's important to learn from the blips and the struggles life hands you. Take what's positive and move on. Don't get mired in the negative experiences. I've learned more from my challenges than from the things that have come easily.

Don't give up on feeling good
Looking good and feeling good is a mindset. When I put effort into how I look it gives me a different energy. And while my appearance doesn't define me, it can make me feel more confident. And that helps at work and in social situations. Even cosmetic dentistry or plastic surgery can be an option provided you do your own research and choose a qualified, credentialed physician. Of course that's a personal choice that only you can make. So do your hair and makeup, wear something you like and show off your beautiful self!

Keep moving
I work to stay fit and healthy. Being active lets me go about my day feeling 30. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans published by the Department of Health and Human Services, adults should get at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity each week and do strengthening activities at least two days a week. I like to start my day with a long walk outside with my dogs and of course I love to dance. Whether you join a fitness class, go outside to do some stretching or do a triathlon the key is to find something you like and do it regularly.

Don't focus on the number
I started Jazzercise 45 years ago, and today we teach 32,000 dance-based fitness classes around the world every week. People are always asking my age and are surprised to find out that I'm still teaching classes and running the business as CEO. I know it's a compliment, but since I rarely think about my chronological age in relation to what I'm doing and contributing, sometimes I have to remind myself to be gracious.

Defy expectations
Don't do what people expect from you at a particular age. Do what feels right for you and makes you feel good, whatever stage of life you're in.

Act like a kid
Sure, we collect more responsibilities as we age. And as people take us more seriously we tend to take ourselves more seriously, too. But acting like a kid can keep you young in spirit. Run, jump, play and be carefree as often as possible. Expressing childlike joy is freeing!

Connect mind, body and spirit
I believe nurturing the connection between mind, body and spirit gives us the best foundation for a healthy and fulfilling life. Keep educating yourself and be open to learning new things. Feed your body with exercise, sleep and eating well (at least most of the time). Feed your spirit by giving back to your community and surrounding yourself with positive people who bring life to what you do.

Age is just a number. It's how many candles are on a cake. It's not you. It's not what defines you. How we treat the passage of years is up to us. I've learned to appreciate my decades and the experiences they've given me. I've decided to focus on growing rather than aging. Who's with me?

Do you act your age? What's your best advice on aging? Please share and comment below.

Every college in America boasts that one life-changing class with that one legendary professor. If you’re lucky enough to be in such a class, you surely drink the professor’s Kool-Aid and think, “I’m gonna tell my kid about this some day.”

The following 12 courses have earned esteemed reputations at their respective schools. Each is crafted in a distinct and unusual way, leading them to gain a place among America's most unique college classes.

1. Writers House Fellows, University of Pennsylvania

David Sedaris and Susan Sontag and Tony Kushner, oh my! In Al Filreis' unconventional English course, students actually get to meet the writers they study. The semester is divided into three sections and each section is dedicated to one writer. At the end of each month-long segment, the writer that the class has been studying attends the 3-hour seminar and participates in an unrecorded conversation with the students. Talk about dream come true for Lit. nerds.

2. Demystifying the Hipster, Tufts University Experimental College

It’s not all American Apparel and Indie tracks; the voice of our generation is composed of so much more than just stereotypes, and Jacqueline O’Dell’s Experimental College course delves deep into the definitions, debates, and history of the hipster. Through developing their own standard of what it means to be a hipster, students become experts and critics of hipster identity and culture.

3. Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyoncé, Rutgers University

Calling all the single ladies: this exploration into Queen Bey’s influence on feminism, race, gender, and culture helps students become more aware of the way in which pop culture shapes society. Most classes that are named for celebrities deal with sociologies of fame or psychologies of human behavior, but Kevin Allred’s version zeroes in on politics. By juxtaposing Beyoncé’s song lyrics with readings by distinguished black leaders like Sojourner Truth and Octavia Butler, students ask and attempt to answer the question, “Can Beyoncé’s music be seen as a blueprint for progressive social change?” Yet the more appropriate question may be: Who runs the world? Beyoncé.

6. What if Harry Potter Is Real?, Appalachian State University

Alohamora! What if that spell actually unlocked a door? Layne McDaniel’s Harry Potter class is different from Harry Potter courses at other schools because of its focus on the “What if?” Through asking “What if?” questions about the nature and accuracy of history and examining Harry Potter texts for factual information as well as imagined events, students engage the tension between fantasy and reality and understand the ways in which history is used and mis-used.

7. Health Psychology, Yale University

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill Psych 101. In Benjamin Toll’s interactive course, students learn as much outside of the classroom as they do inside by immersing themselves in a self-intervention. Each student identifies a problem within their own life, ranging from stress to sleep to indecision, and for the duration of the semester, they apply their knowledge from class discussions and readings to their own habits in an effort to change their behavior. Embodying John Dewey’s philosophy of “learning by doing,” one student who took this course said, “The intervention helped me recognize the triggers of my indecision and how to intervene if I found myself in a fit of indecisiveness…It opened me up to the world of psychology as a way we can all better ourselves through simple mechanisms that can make huge differences.”

8. Stupidity, Occidental

Noam Chomsky once said, “Most schooling is training for stupidity and conformity.” Well, Elmer Griffen’s stupidity course takes that statement and runs with it. Through examining the nature of stupidity as “the double of intelligence rather than its opposite,” students in this class are taught to see things from an entirely different perspective.

9. “Oh, Look, A Chicken!” Embracing Distraction as a Way of Knowing, Belmont University

Deen Entsminger’s course description says it all: "'Oh, look! A Chicken!'….This course will pursue ways of knowing through embracing [little ants, carrying a morsel of food across the table] what it means to be a distracted [I could sure enjoy a peanut butter sandwich right now] learner as well as [OMG -- I get to go to the beach this summer] developing an awareness [I need to trim my fingernails] of one’s senses. The instructor teaches in the school of music, [do I hear water dripping?] so there will be an element related to that woven [spiders are amazing] into the course. [oh, it's the fish tank behind me] Those registering for this section may even learn to juggle [I'll be right down, I just have to finish this...what was I working on?].”

10. The Art of Walking, Centre College

Wait, there’s an art to that mindless method of transportation we all utilize several times per day? According to this Ken Keffer’s class, the answer is yes. This three-week course -– designed for CentreTerm, an abbreviated term used for “risk-taking and exploration” -– tests theories put forth by people such as Immanuel Kant and Martin Heidegger by having students focus on walking as an experience in itself rather than a means to an end.

12. Death in Perspective, Kean University

With a three-year waiting list, let’s hope no one dies before they get to take this class. Kidding! More than anything else, Norma Bowe's death class teaches students to appreciate life. Fieldtrips to cemeteries, debates about the death penalty, and assignments such as drafting wills ironically help students think about the type of lives they want to lead.

How To Look Like A Lady While Riding A Bike

After spotting a photo of actress Famke Janssen riding a bike in a floral frock and red ballet flats, we were stunned at how perfectly ladylike -- and comfortable -- the star looked. Our idea of bicycle attire has always been limited to T-shirts, shorts and sneakers. But alas, there's no reason to sacrifice our feminine style while taking a spin.

For example, Vogue's Creative Director for Digital Sally Singer is the epitome of "cycle chic" -- wearing designer duds and stilettos when she bikes around New York City. After a few quick searches on Instagram, we discovered that she isn't the only one. There are plenty of other gals out there riding pretty.

Check out the following biking beauties for some inspiration on how to look your most fabulous on two wheels.

Master the art of riding in high heels.

Throw on a pair of leggings under your dress in case your skirt flys up or you're worried about skin chaffing.

Pick an eye-catching print and rock it from fingertips to toes.

Opt for a bright-hued dress -- it's on-trend and ensures you're seen by oncoming traffic.

Try a jumpsuit for an effortlessly cool ride.

Tie a scarf over the rear wheel guard of your bike for a fashionable and functional way to keep your loose clothing from getting caught.

Slip on a sturdy and stylish pair of wedges if high heels aren't your jam.

Grab a flowy top or sundress for an easy, breezy, beautiful ride.

Wear white fearlessly.

Invite a cute guy -- they are the perfect bicycling accessory.

Remember leather isn't just for motorcycles.

The Reason Gap Workers Are Wearing White This Week

Gap has made good on its promise to raise minimum employee pay to $9 an hour, and it's encouraging workers to wear white in celebration.

The clothing multinational, which also owns the brands Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime and Athleta, first announced in February that it would raise its minimum wage to $9 in June 2014, and to $10 in June 2015. The change applies to all Gap Inc. brands.

Now that the company has hit its first milestone, employees are being encouraged to show their support by wearing white and using the hashtag #LetsDoMore on social media.

Story continues below.

Paula Conhain, a spokeswoman for Gap, confirmed that the campaign to wear white was tied to the minimum wage increase.

"We wanted to mark this moment in our company's history [with the] classic white shirt that so many of our brands carry," she told The Huffington Post.

As of this week, 31,000 employees at Gap Inc. brands across the country will see their wages rise to $9 an hour, Conhain told HuffPost. When the company hikes its wage to $10 an hour next June, about 65,000 workers will get a raise, she said.

On Monday, HuffPost spoke to two Gap employees in New York City, where the minimum hourly living wage is estimated to be $12.75. Both employees said they won't be getting a raise this week, since they already make $9 an hour.

"In some larger cities, there's more competition for great retail talent, so it's more important to have great wages to attract employees," Conhain told HuffPost. She added that Gap's wage increase is likely to have the greatest impact in the South and the Midwest, where states tend to have lower minimum wages.

Gap's initiative is a notable first step in an industry notorious for its low wages. It also dovetails with all the existing evidence that raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 would not kill the economy, as some opponents have claimed.

As of Monday, not every Gap worker had gotten the memo about wearing white. Two employees in New York City told HuffPost they thought the white campaign was just a standard summer sales event.
