Designing for Young Hollywood

As a child, she admired her mother's fashion taste so much that she would sneak into her closet and put on her dresses and heels. It was clear from a young age that Donna Mizani had a passion for clothing design. That passion would take her to the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and then at 22 years of age, Mizani exploded onto the fashion scene with her label and hasn't looked back.

Most known for her signature "cut-out" dress designs, her craftsmanship has been seen on Hollywood starlets such as Joanna Krupa, Kristin Cavallari, Megan Fox and Carmen Electra. Achieving what Mizani has at such a young age is nothing short of impressive. I was able to catch up with the alluring 27-year-old fashionista to see what it's like to be such a young designer and to work with a variety of Hollywood "It" girls.

You have emerged on the scene very young, and have quickly earned the respect of high profile Hollywood starlets. What's your secret?

Thank You! I am so passionate about my job and not afraid to work hard. Anyone who puts passion and hard work into something can create success for themselves too!

What have you found to be some of the biggest hurdles you've had to overcome in the fashion world?

There are many hurdles in the fashion world. The hurdles will continue to challenge me for as long as I choose to stay in this world because of how competitive the industry is. My solution for most hurdles I face is to stay true to myself, stay strong and confident, because that's how I got started in this industry.

Who is your favorite muse and why?

My muse has always been Kate Moss. She has, for so many years, been able to wear anything. She has shown us all how to dress for every style that a woman can be (sexy, rock, mommy, chic, provocative, boho, etc. etc.) Her trend setting ways for all these years have been very inspiring for me.

Who is your favorite designer for inspiration, and why?

I find inspiration from all over. For me inspiration does not always come from fashion, it mostly comes from many different life experiences. Travel, painting, books, history, family and friends. These things influence me the most, which help ignite my creative juices.

Tell us about your new fall collection... What are some styles we can expect?

I am so excited for the launch of my Fall 2014 collection! It's got a fresh new vibe but, of course, the line continues to stay true to what it is know for. I did a sexy twist on basic silhouettes this season offering t-shirts and pencil skirts in sexy fabrics. It has translated very well and I'm extremely happy with the outcome!

5 Truths the Fast Fashion Industry Doesn't Want You to Know

$

The fashion industry gets a lot of flack these days. The excess, the overtly sexual advertising, the humanitarian issues, the waste, the lawsuits, the list goes on.

The industry giants have dedicated millions of dollars to massive PR campaigns, going so far as to launch "conscious collections" and donate proceeds to worthy causes. Yet despite these efforts, the truth remains -- fashion is one of the dirtiest industries in the world. Here's what they don't want you to know:

1.) The fashion industry is designed to make you feel "out of trend" after one week.

Once upon a time, there were two fashion seasons: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Fast forward to 2014 and the fashion industry is churning out 52 "micro-seasons" per year. With new trends coming out every week, the goal of fast fashion is for consumers to buy as many garments as possible, as quickly as possible.

According to Elizabeth Cline in her book Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, fast-fashion merchandise is typically priced much lower than the competition, operating on a business model of low quality / high volume.

Cline points to the Spanish retailer Zara for pioneering the fast-fashion concept with new deliveries to its stores coming in twice per week. At the time of writing, she says H&M and Forever21 both get daily shipments of new styles, while Topshop introduces 400 styles a week on its website.

With designers creating new looks on a weekly basis, the fashion calendar for these companies is set up to deliberately make the customer feel off-trend after the first wear.

2.) "Discounts" aren't really discounts.

The thriftiest fashionistas love the idea of going into an outlet store like TJ Maxx or Marshall's and coming out with designer labels at a fraction of the price. Unfortunately, the "excess" or unsellable items we think we're buying often have never seen a designer label before.

"Despite common belief, outlet clothing never enters a 'regular' store and is most likely produced in an entirely different factory than the 'regular' clothing," writes Jay Hallstein in "The Myth of the Maxxinista."

The reality is that outlets broker deals with designers so they can put designer labels on the cheaply made clothing manufactured in their own low-quality factories.

An article featured on Jezebel confirms: "The jig is up: Big brands like J. Crew, Gap and Saks' Off 5th aren't selling you discounted or out of season merchandise at their outlet locations. You're just buying lower quality cardigans and patterned pants."

3.) There is lead and hazardous chemicals on your clothing.

According to the Center for Environmental Health, Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, Forever21 and other popular fast-fashion chains are still selling lead-contaminated purses, belts and shoes above the legal amount, years after signing a settlement agreeing to limit the use of heavy metals in their products.

An article in The New York Times says the Center for Environmental Health is focusing on reducing the lead content in products marketed to young women because lead accumulation in bones can be released during pregnancy, potentially harming both mother and fetus.

Lead exposure has also been linked to higher rates of infertility in women and increased risks of heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. Many scientists agree there is no "safe" level of lead exposure for anyone.

The lead contamination is all in addition to the pesticides, insecticides, formaldehyde, flame-retardants and other known carcinogens that reside on the clothes we wear.

4.) Clothing is designed to fall apart.

Fast fashion giants, such as H&M, Zara and Forever21, are concerned with the bottom line and the bottom line alone. Their business models are dependent on the consumers' desire for new clothing to wear -- which is instinctive if the clothing falls apart in one wash.

"A store like H&M produces hundreds of millions of garments per year," author Elizabeth Cline says on NPR. "They put a small markup on the clothes and earn their profit out of selling an ocean of clothing."

So why should we care? Because the average American throws away over 68 pounds of textiles per year. We're not talking about clothing being donated to charity shops or sold to consignment stores, that 68 pounds of clothing is going directly into landfills. Because most of our clothing today is made with synthetic, petroleum-based fibers, it will take decades for these garments to decompose.

"You see some products and it's just garbage. It's just crap," says Simon Collins, dean of fashion at Parsons The New School for Design, on NPR. "And you sort of fold it up and you think, yeah, you're going to wear it Saturday night to your party -- and then it's literally going to fall apart."

5.) Beading and sequins are an indication of child labor.

Industry estimates suggest that 20 to 60 percent of garment production is sewn at home by informal workers, according author Lucy Siegle in her book, To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World?

While there are machines that can apply sequins and beading that look like handiwork, they are very expensive and must be purchased by the garment factory. According to Siegle, it's highly unlikely that an overseas factory would invest in the equipment, particularly if the clothing being made is for a value-driven fast-fashion label.

Carrying out her own investigation, Siegle learned that millions of desperate home-workers are hidden in some of the poorest regions of the world, "hunched over, stitching and embroidering the contents of the global wardrobe ... in slums where a whole family can live in a single room."

Often with the help of their children, the home workers sew as fast as they can and for as long as daylight allows to embellish and bedazzle the clothes that end up in our closets. Siegle goes on to say, "They live hand to mouth, presided over by middlemen, tyrannical go-betweens who hand over some of the lowest wages in the garment industry."

So how can you become a more conscious consumer? It starts by educating yourself, buying local, buying less, buying used and buying from independent designers. You can start by joining a growing movement of fashion changemakers here.

It's finally official: Zoe Saldana is, in fact, pregnant.

Rumors of Saldana's pregnancy first started circulating in July. Multiple outlets, such as E! News and The Hollywood Reporter, reported that their sources confirmed Saldana's first pregnancy with husband Marco Perego.

Despite the rumors and photographic evidence of her growing belly, the "Guardians Of The Galaxy" star did not address her baby news ... until now, in her video for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge posted Aug. 19.

"I am accepting James Gunn's challenge to take on the ice bucket challenge in support of finding a cure for ALS. Obviously I can't do it myself," the 36-year-old said, while rubbing her stomach, "So I nominate my husband to take on the challenge," she added.

Online Dating: 7 Easy Ways to Fill Your Date Card

$

If you're busy sending emails to potential dates online and are frustrated with the lack of response, our friends at online dating site Zoosk have come up with some simple suggestions on how to move the process along in their "7-Step Guide to Landing a Date."

Here's a recap, along with a cool infographic at the bottom of this post to help ramp up your dating life.

1. Add a date activity to show someone you really do want to go on a date.

In a recent survey of 3000 of their members, Zoosk found that mentioning movies as a favorite activity in you profile and even suggesting a movie date increases your response rate to your email messages by 91 percent. Yes, that's a big number and one worth viewing film trailers for. Other keywords included the beach (59 percent) and a park (39 percent).

2. Send emails in the morning if you're a man; in the evening if you're a woman.

Guys will increase their chances of a response by 10 percent if they send emails between 9 am and 10 am, while the best time for women to send email messages is between 10 pm and 11 pm. So ladies, send that flirty email and go to sleep with a smile on your face and avoid sending an email from 2 pm - 3 pm.

3. Respond within 24 hours.

As for when you should respond to an email, 94 percent of those surveyed said within 24 hours. I have to agree with this one. Remember when someone is emailing you, they're sending emails to many others at the same time. Often the squeaky wheel gets the love deal, so playing too hard to get will likely backfire.

4. Focus on what makes you unique.

If you want to stand out in a crowded digital playground, talk about your date's hair, their gorgeous eyes, fun or geeky glasses and even their tattoo. Remember to be fun and flirty. Stay away from the sexual comments, which received a digital thumbs down from Zooskers.

One of the biggest challenges I see singles struggling with is what to write in their first email. First impressions do really matter and your email should be more than, "hey." Here are a few interesting tidbits.

5. Character count matters.

Guys didn't seem to care how long the first message was from a woman, but 40 percent of the women did indeed want to see a message that was longer than a full-length tweet of 140 characters.

6. Expect to send five emails.

Finally, how long will it take to get to the first date? About half of the singles polled said they send five email exchanges before putting his or her name on their date card.

7. Put that first date on the calendar.

Follow these steps and you should be adding dates to your calendar and taking your relationship offline.

Are you using any of these tips while looking for love online?

Colombian Beauty Queen Paola Builes Aristizábal Stripped Of Crown For 'Lingerie' Pictures

A beauty queen who was gunning to be Miss Colombia had her hopes shot down when she was disqualified after pictures of her in underwear emerged.

Story continues below picture of said underwear in question ...

Paola Builes Aristizábal, 21, was named Miss Antioquia on Aug. 10, and that qualified her to compete for the Miss Colombia Crown, according to Bluradio.

But then the purportedly inflammatory pictures emerged, and pageant organizers decided they showed Aristizábal in underwear too racy for contestants to EVER be pictured wearing.

"Well I'm still in shock because of the decision," Aristizábal told Bluradio. "I feel discriminated against because there are other candidates that are going to participate in the pageant in Cartagena that have photos in lingerie, they also have photos with tiny bathing suits, and they're going to participate."

She told Bluradio the pictures in question were taken two years ago and were part of her private portfolio.

The competition's runner-up, Natalia Ochoa Calle, is now Miss Antioquia.

In a statement issued to Colombia El Espectador, the Cosmovisión
network, which made the decision with the help of the board of directors of the Concurso Nacional de Belleza (National Beauty Pageant), said:

Miss Antioquia Paola Builes Aristizábal, who was elected on August 10, will not be able to exercise her functions as queen of the antioqueños. This decision was taken after consultation with the Board of the National Beauty Pageant in Cartagena, prompted by photos of the participant in lingerie, which [the organization] was not aware of until one day after the evening of election and coronation.

Below are more OUTRAGEOUS photographs of Aristizábal (they are not actually outrageous) that are not related to her disqualification:

Seth Fickett wanted to surprise his bride during their recent wedding, so he did what any savvy groom would do: he broke out his dancing shoes and his best boy band moves.

It all went down during the couple's wedding earlier this month in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. During the reception, Seth and his groomsmen presented the bride Natalie with a super special dance to One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful."

He posted a video of the performance to YouTube where he explained that his brother and best man Asher secretly helped him choreograph the dance for the groomsmen to practice at the bachelor party.

"Boom. She never saw it coming," he wrote.

The Ultimate Guide To Buying Fall Basics

$

0
Our favorite part about autumn is the fact that we finally get to layer our clothes again. That leads to one thing: stocking up on our basics.

Although a "fall basic" can be as plain as a white T-shirt, the pieces you choose have the ability to transform multiple outfits. That's why it's essential to have a wide selection of tanks, pants and accessories so you have a bunch of options when creating simple ensembles.

Stay true to classics with your jeans and neutral tones, but take risks when it comes to jewelry and updated silhouettes. Check out our suggestions for next season's fundamentals and get shopping!

the bases

Top from left to right: Gap Favorite Crew Tee, Old Navy Women's Sleeveless Tees; Bottom from left to right: Old Navy Women's Jersey Tami 3-Packs, Lane Bryant Smooth Balconette Bra, H&M 2-Pack Tights

Undergarments are the key to building the perfect outfit. You can never have too many tanks and tees, but when it comes down to it, white, black and neutral options are a must. Plus, a good bra to give you all-day support is not a bad idea either.

new tops
Top from left to right: River Island Navy Sleeveless Wrap Blouse, Nic and Zoe All Around Wrap Top; Bottom from left to right: H&M Lyocell Shirt, Gap Fitted Boyfriend Oxford Shirt, Merona Women's Favorite Blouse

Blouses and button-downs are great for fall because you can wear them in a variety of ways -- roll up the sleeves, tie the tails or keep it unbuttoned with a tank underneath. Navy, black and white should do the trick, but pick some patterned numbers so you can mix it up every once in a while.

teacher bottoms
Top from left to right: Merona Women's Ponte Sleeveless Fit And Flare Dress, 1969 Real Straight Jeans; Bottom from left to right: Silk & Cotton Straight Skirt, Crepe Cigarette Pants, Structured A-Line Skirt

Simplify your early-morning routine with some staple garments that can carry you through the work week and beyond. Black pants always come in handy, but try getting them tailored to your shape and liking so you will always feel comfortable in them.

The little black dress can be dressed up with accessories, while a denim piece will subtly put the "casual" in casual Fridays.

teacher cardigans
Top from left to right: V-Neck Cotton Cardigan, Pointelle Short Sleeve Cardigan; Bottom from left to right: Merona Women's Ultimate Long Sleeve Crew Neck Cardigan, Gap Mesh-Stitch Cardigan, H&M Fine-Knit Cardigan

Cardigans deserve their own category, of course. They come in every color, lots of patterns and are great for layering.

the jackets
Top from left to right: Collarless Faux Leather Biker Jacket, J.Crew Schoolboy Blazer; Bottom from left to right: Zara Flowy Trenchcoat With Camouflage Lining, Gap Military Jacket, Helene Berman Wool Blend Cape

Autumn has a wide climate range: one minute it's nice and breezy, the next it's freezing rain. To combat those rocky times, invest in some coats meant to deal with weather, like an updated trench, and lighter jackets that are more trend-focused, like a cape or leather bomber.

accessories
Top from left to right: Style&co Lily Envelope Clutch, Faux Gemstone Bib Necklace; Bottom from left to right: Timex Women's Elevated Classics Bracelet Watch, R&R Leather Organizer Flap Leather Crossbody Bag, Nordstrom Woven Scarf

Sure, you can get along wearing black and navy all of the time -- but amp up your style with some statement accessories. You're golden with a structured purse or dangling necklace. Add some sensibility with the coolest bag of the season: a briefcase.

the shoes
Top from left to right: Crown Vintage Sandy Bootie, DV By Dolce Vita Langely; Bottom from left to right: Audrey Brooke Cici Leather Flat, Lauren Ralph Lauren Mila Riding Boot, Aldo Ocaria Pump

Finally, it's boot season! With that in mind, you can get different pairs at various lengths, including booties and riding boots. Additionally, it's always helpful to have a pump here or there, and don't forget about flats -- because you know you'll be wearing those most of the time.

When Your Clothes Don't Fit Properly, You Can End Up On The Worst-Dressed List

$

0
Fit is one of the most important elements when you're getting dressed -- it can really make or break an outfit.

And this week, celebrities learned this lesson the hard way. Ashley Benson wore a onesie that was pulling in all the wrong places, while Rosario Dawson should have sized up for a much more successful ensemble.

Check out the stars who made our worst-dressed list and let us know if you agree with our picks.

Rosario Dawson

rosario

Black leather and lace is usually a winning combination, but the fit of Dawson's dress is a little snug. Had she gone up a size or two, this would have been a much more flattering outfit.

Ashley Benson

ash

Benson's romper seems to be pulling in the crotch which looks wildly uncomfortable and also unflattering. The fabric is very wrinkled, the extremely plunging neckline that practically reveals her belly button is too low and that sagging bow isn't helping matters.

Tyra Banks

tyra banks

This dress looks sharp -- literally. It could easily take someone's eye out. We can also see her bra, which is always a red carpet no-no. Let's file this under "what was she thinking?".

Kate Mara

kate

This dress looks like it belongs on a Disney princess, not on one of Hollywood's most fashionable leading ladies. The color and the embellishment don't fit with Mara's style sensibilities.

Rita Ora

rita ora

When it comes to Rita Ora we always know to expect the unexpected but this is a little shocking, even for her. If we were to look past the blinding tin foil color, the dress is still bad -- it hardly does anything for her body. She should have picked something that cinched in higher at the waist or a shift dress rather than a drop waist silhouette.

We Guarantee This Simple Style Advice Will Land You On The Best-Dressed List

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That's basically the most important piece of style advice you need. If you find a silhouette, color or fabric that works well for you, wear it. It will never fail you.

And if you don't believe us, just look at Chloë Grace Moretz, who continually impresses in shift dresses with cute collars. Or Maria Sharapova who consistently looks like a babe in bright red hues.

Check out our best-dressed list and let us know if you agree with our choices.

Chloë Grace Moretz in Miu Miu

chloe

As if we needed another reason to adore her! Her style is always on point and this ensemble is no exception. Her cute, age-appropriate embellished dress is so fun and the pointed collar and strappy silver heels make it stylish. We can't wait to see how her style evolves as she gets older.

Maria Sharapova in J. Mendel

maria

We're not sure if we love the color of Sharapova's dress or the silhouette more. The tennis player played up her amazing figure in this drop-waist frock. The low neckline is balanced out nicely by the thick straps on the dress and the knee-length hemline, while her tousled locks keep the entire ensemble casual yet sexy.

Uzo Aduba in Costume National

uzo

This white dress really pops on the "Orange Is The New Black" star. It makes her look long and lean, plus it showcases her amazing guns.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

julia

It might seem slightly unorthodox to wear a black T-shirt on the red carpet, but this cowl neck number, paired with Louis-Dreyfus' statement skirt, looks amazing for a night on the town. The outfit is so simple, but the fit is spot on, so it works.

Kerry Washington in Mary Katrantzou

A strapless printed dress + Toecap pumps + a ponytail = Perfection.

My Hysterically Funny Fashion Crisis

$

This article was originally published on Better After 50.

fashion crisisIf I were 20, 30 or perhaps 40-something, I don't think I would have found my latest fashion debacle particularly funny. I don't think I could have of handled this "extremely outrageous" turn of events. In those earlier years, if someone had told me I should have worn a razor back bra - I had the wrong one on - or my bra straps showed --- I would have run to the ladies room to confirm my faux pas. If I had a dirt stain on my white paints - I would brush my backside nervously to try to remove the unresolvable for the duration.

My fashion self-consciousness over the past few decades has been driven by sloppy vs. style issues. Frankly, I'm comfortable with my taste in clothes -- but I hate wrinkly, stained, spotted, tattered clothing. I like to look put together. And, since I live out of a suitcase most of the year, as I travel between New York and Boston each week, my clothing is often a victim of whatever is in my trunk -- such as bike grease, hiking boot crud and my dog Jazz's paws.

My comfort with fashion came together for me at 19 years of age during my year in Paris. It was then I embraced my "look" and proceeded confidently for the most part -- except when I was told my hem was unravelled or there was a hole in my stocking.

I have always loved vintage clothes. My Nana was the most stylish woman I know and I wore everything she gave me from age 13 and beyond. When I find an outfit that resembles Nana's style, I am thrilled. That is why, what I wore to the dinner dance party this past Saturday night was particularly fun for me.

I have been savoring my ultra-suede, multi-colored neon, strappy short cocktail dress for 25 years. This dress was crazy cool in the late 80s and I've been waiting for the right decade to bring it back out. It's been living in the back of my closet all this time.

So, when I excavated it for this summer for some "special occasion" I didn't have a particular event in mind. When I grabbed it from the closet, I saw the ultra-suede had worn thin along the seam, so my trusty "Clothes Doctor" gave it a good stitching and it looked like new.

When we got an invite to a summer dinner dance, I thought this could be it's coming out. As I slipped on this little ultra suede number, I chuckled. "Oh this is fun -- I am going to have a blast tonight". (First premonition.) As I made my living room entrance -- my husband's brows lifted and he chuckled. My son Jake and his two friends gave me a whistle. "That dress is fun -- so cool." I stood a little taller.

Arriving at the party I joined the huddle of women who were admiring one another's dresses. The mood was light and playful and it seemed all were ripe for a different kind of night.

The weather was spectacular -- one night shy of the "super moon", the light of that magical lunar orb lit up the sky. My husband and I settled onto an outdoor couch with our dear friends laughing and sharing our latest summer tales. After a bit -- we decided it was time to dance and as I hopped up off the couch my friend Gwen said to me, "you're not going anywhere -- sit down." She was hysterical laughing -- she couldn't contain herself.

fashion crisis"Your dress is split up the backside."

I leaned hard into the couch so as not to "reveal" and slipped my hand behind and all I felt was skin. OMG -- outrageous, the suede had dissolved! Vintage had vaporized on my backside. This was a riot! I laughed so belly-laugh loud, tears were streaming down my cheeks, and I couldn't catch my breath. My husband took a gander and our laugh track was growing -- Gwen's husband was aghast -- "are you kidding -- this is a riot" and we were a full orchestra. We couldn't stand it -- it went on for what seemed like hours.

What I felt at that moment was sheer delight. This was so much fun! My first thought was I'm so glad I'm not 30, or 40 -- I'm so glad I'm over 50 because this ridiculous fashion "crisis" is truly priceless -- vs. devastating. And let me add -- my butt is not my favorite "asset" (excuse the play on words).

I had no interest in sharing my shredded suede opening with anyone. Luckily, the venue we were partying in had a pool and lockers and a friend got me a bathrobe as a cover.

We all took to the dance floor, and laughed and danced a bit before the heat of the heavy robe became impossible.

When we arrived home, my husband and I were still hysterical and we looked up at the almost full moon and he chuckled -- that was the best "super moon" I've ever seen.

9 Ways To Make Cheap Furniture Look Expensive

$

Cheap furniture doesn't always have to look it. When you're bored with that hand-me-down dresser, thrift store-sourced table or the IKEA coffee table everyone has, know that the answer isn't throwing it away. You CAN do something to make even the most basic piece of pressed board seem a little more stylish -- even a little more expensive -- without spending more money. Check out these DIY ideas below, then tell us: What's the best advice you have for updating old furniture? (No, "buying something else" doesn't count.)

The easiest way to update any plain piece of furniture is with bold paint.

The original tutorial for this faux wood bed shows you how to fashion a headboard from scratch, but you can use the same easy technique to cover one you already have.

Metal tables are durable, but can look utilitarian. A coat of gold paint changes that.

You don't have to paint the whole piece, either. Here, only the bottom portion of this shelving unit is painted gold, creating a trendy "dip dye" effect.

New knobs can make a big impact for little work. All you have to do is screw them in.

Similarly, a new set of legs can also completely change the look of a table.

Another way to update an old piece of furniture is just to paint a few specific details in a contrasting color, like blogger Kate Riley of Centsational Girl did with a damaged nightstand.

If you're more ambitious, paint a new design on the drawer fronts and add new pulls, like designer Courtney Johnson did with an old dresser.

Really, really, REALLY ambitious? Then turn your metal coffee table into a tufted bench. Blogger Krys Melo will show you how over at Melodrama.

Onscreen Facial Transformations Will Make You Do A Double-Take

It's no secret that some actors go to extremes when gearing up for a role -- whether it be losing weight, gaining weight or dying their hair to accurately portray a character. Other times, it's the makeup artists who take things to another level, completely transforming a celebrity's face in order to make a fictional or nonfictional person a reality onscreen.

From Charlize Theron's transformation in "Monster" to Robin Williams' "Mrs Doubtfire" look, here are 19 stars whose film personas will make you do a double-take:

Proof That Hollywood Doesn't Understand Texting

Even though nearly all of us are texting every day, we still haven't quite figured out how to depict it in film and on television.

Film critic Tony Zhou took a look through the evolution of the onscreen text message in an informative video, found at the bottom of this post, highlighting the ways in which we can still improve on this sometimes awkward problem.

Animating text messages onscreen has for existed for years, as seen in 2008's "Sex Drive," below.

However, the integration of texting and film continues to gain mainstream appeal. For example, ABC's "Pretty Little Liars" is centered around girls receiving text messages from the elusive "A." But there's a problem, visually, as illustrated below: the cutaway shot to a phone screen looks sharp and forced.

But -- hallelujah! -- Frank Underwood -- as played by Kevin Spacey -- is here to save (and ruin) the day. In Netflix's "House of Cards," texts appear beside the character, enabling us to see his entire glorious performance.

But ultimately, for Zhou, BBC's "Sherlock" does it best: the show artfully integrates a classic, borderless white font with messages that look natural and appear in visually interesting ways.

Tara Reid showed some summer skin Thursday, Aug. 21, at a screening of "Sharknado 2: The Second One" in Los Angeles.

The 38-year-old took the red carpet by storm in a hot pink number with a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit. She accessorized with chunky black heels and chic white nails.

The actress, who rose to fame in her younger years with hits like "American Pie" and "Josie and the Pussycats," recently spoke to Time Magazine about her "Sharknado" comeback, and her struggle to overcome the party girl reputation that has followed her career.

“'Sharknado' was a fun, silly movie that we made -- we knew it was ridiculous," she said. “It’s not like I did 'Titanic,' or I’m up for an Academy Award. In that way, it did nothing for my career. It certainly showed the popularity in the fans that I have. Throughout the years I’ve lost the credibility of how much I did have, with things that weren’t always in my favor.”

“Over the years, I’ve built a reputation that isn’t what a movie star is supposed to be like -- the way the American media portrays it,” she added. “They made a character of me that’s not even true. There’s a whole side of me that no one gets. No one knows that side about me, but nobody wants to know that side of me. Even if they do know about it, no one wants to write about it. So I’m lucky that I’m doing 'Sharknado' right now. Do I know I have the capacity of doing more? Of course. But will I get the chance? It’s not up to me. It’s someone that’s gonna believe in me and say yes.”

During a break from putting the finishing touches on his spring collection, Prabal Gurung turns animated as he shows off his first cosmetics line, which he hopes will be the initial step in building a thriving beauty business.

A collaboration with MAC Cosmetics, Gurung’s 14-stockkeeping-unit collection, will launch Nov. 26 in MAC stores in North America and in December in all of the brand’s international stores except China — although those who attend the designer’s show on Sept. 6 will get a preview of it.

New Phone Charging Bracelet Is Brilliant, Makes Us Want More Charging Accessories

As much as we'd like to deny it, we live in a social-media obsessed world where phone outlets are as coveted as a pair of Louboutins. No matter how many times we're exposed to the benefits of unplugging, the fact is that having a charger brings a certain joy matched by very few other things.

There are already purses that will boost your battery and now we finally have charging bracelets that are actually cool enough to wear, but that got us thinking about all the other things in our lives we wish could provide some juice.

Shoes

It's likely that you're wearing shoes for most of the day, making it the perfect place to stick your phone and raise those bars a few notches.

Our Hands

hands

We're always holding our phones anyway, why not put them to good use?

Pant Pockets

Stick your phone in your pocket and use your hands for other things. Perfect for reading, eating, etc.

Bottles Of Wine

wine
Duh.

Lip Balm

A charger that keeps your lips smooth, too? Score.

Wallets

If we had wallets that also charged our phones the need for a purse would dwindle down to nothing and that would be AWESOME.

Sunglass Cases

sunglasses

Take the sunglasses out, put the cell phone in. Now you're blocking out the sun AND running on a full charge.

The Ocean

OK, this one makes absolutely zero sense. But wouldn't it be glorious if there was a way to bring your phone into the water with you without destroying it and also have it be charged when you come out? That sounds like the world's best beach day to us.

Bonus: The Bump

If you're charged and your friend is left with a dead phone, how cool would it be to bump some of your charge over to them? That is until your phone dies, then things could get messy.

What are some things you wish could charge your phone? Sound off below!

10 Wedding Trends That Need To Be Retired (And What To Do Instead)

By Stefania Sainato Bridal Guide

We surveyed top wedding planners and vendors across the country to get the inside scoop on how they're modernizing the most popular wedding trends to date. Get their expert advice on how to breathe new life into tried-and-true favorites and make them your own!

1. Mason Jars
The mighty Mason jar is heralded for its rustic charm and has been the most-requested décor for the past few years, especially for casual outdoor nuptials. However, while Mason jars are still adorable for serving that peach iced tea or signature cocktail, couples are going a different route with their centerpieces. Glass-cut pitchers, antique milk bottles, upcycled wine crates and simple porcelain vases are just a few of the many creative variations.

"A common statement that I hear during my initial consultation with brides is ‘I don’t want a mason jar wedding,’ which is music to any designer’s ears. Their 15 minutes of fame are officially up and I say it is high time to introduce something else," says Heather Thomas of HeatherLily.

Aviva Samuels of Kiss the Planner points clients to oil lanterns, Diane Kolanović-Šolaja of Dee Kay Events can’t get enough of birch vases and Olivia Korenberg and Jenn Pablo of Twofold LA mix things up by renting colored glass or vintage mismatched sets.

2. Burlap with Lace Accents
This irresistible fabric combination has been used on everything from Mason jars to bouquet handles to cakes. "The problem we have with this particular trend is that all of these weddings start to look alike. As a result, we aren’t seeing the personalization or uniqueness of the couple shine through," explains Stephanie F. Carmody of Très Chic Events.

Fortunately, there are many other ways to incorporate this shabby-chic décor style. Elevate the look by utilizing dyed muslin linens, which has that same great texture without the weird smell or messy shedding associated with burlap. eBay is a great resource for picking up discontinued bolts of fabric in every imaginable color and style.

For a gorgeous variation, Tiffany Siladke of A Splendid Occasion recommends replacing burlap and lace with a more feminine fabric, such as chiffon or silk.

3. Photo Booths
There are certain wedding reception elements that we see over and over again, and the classic photo booth is definitely one of them. Sara Traikoff from The Addison tells us that while the idea behind the fad is sound — providing an activity for loved ones while also capturing candid memories — "there are loads of fun new ways to surprise guests without forfeiting the fun."

For starters, Merilee Hennings of Ever After Events customizes her clients’ photo booths by adding cool backdrops, specialty furniture and props that fit the theme of their wedding.

One of our favorite alternatives is a video booth. "Instead of still shots, guests are captured on video where so much more can be accomplished — like an explosion of confetti or a fun stunt!" explains Whitney Wing of Wish Wonder Dream Weddings & Events. Other high-tech options include having a "media wall" where photographers can shoot guests’ arrivals or having a digital caricaturist.

4. Candy Bars
A few years ago, newlyweds began trending away from large wedding cakes as their sole dessert option. In an effort to satisfy their guests’ sweet tooth, candy displays hit the scene. Not only were they hugely popular but they also provided distinct benefits. For example, they offered guests a new area to check out while taking a break from the dance floor, they served as an aesthetic detail by incorporating the wedding colors and guests could also take them home as favors.

Over time, the novelty factor wore off. "Everyone loves candy but the candy table concept has taken its last bow," says Robin Naluai at the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa. Rrivre Davies of Rrivre Works suggests that couples personalize their late-night snacks to make the experience more unique for their guests.

One creative option is to have his-and-hers treats tables. "Maybe the groom is a sucker for a good PB&J with no crusts and a cold milk while the bride has always loved caramel apples," Naluai explains. Siladke recommends including your favorite childhood treats while Hennings loves quirky details like state-shaped cookies (to represent the couple’s hometown). Setting up interactive stations like a waffle bar, s’mores station and chocolate truffle-wine pairings is another great way to entertain your guests.

5. Chevron
Patterned wedding décor can be fabulous in moderation but too much of a high-contrast print can overwhelm a space. That doesn’t mean you should be forced to stick to solids.

According to Majell del Castillo of Majell del Castillo Events, a great alternative is to incorporate bold stripe and trellis since you can never go wrong with clean lines. Preeti Moberg of Blue Mango Weddings tells us that geometric styles are making a splash: "It’s never been sexier to say that you want a photo booth backdrop with dodecahedrons painted with glitter. Or, use a random assortment of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms in gum paste on your cake."

You can also try rope prints (ideal for a nautical theme), watercolor florals (whimsical and romantic) and ikats in tribal, ethnic and geometric patterns (if you love all things boho). "In my opinion, Mandarin Blue China patterns will be the next hottest trend," says Leslie Price of In Any Event.

6. Tie: Barn or Gatsby-Themed Weddings
The most sought-after wedding themes couldn’t be more diametrically opposed: farms and The Great Gatsby. Edith Levandoski of Edith Elle Photography tells us that although East coast-style glitz and glamour are starting to take hold on the West Coast, "brides in SoCal are holding on to their barn weddings for dear life!"

No matter which theme you’re considering, Tracie Domino of Tracie Domino Events advises examining your true motivation for having it. "If the answer is ‘because it looks nice on Pinterest’ yet you’ve never stepped foot on a farm or you don’t have a personal connection to the Art Deco era, then you should immediately change course. Select a venue that does a better job of representing who you are as a couple and what you like to do," she explains.

If you’re drawn to the idea of a barn because you can’t picture yourself tying the knot in a hotel ballroom, consider other non-traditional venues as well, such as museums, historical properties or large estates. "Just make sure it is a space that caters to hosting a large event so that quality and guest experience don’t suffer the consequences," Samuels cautions.

7. Overly Produced Wedding Photos
Creative themed engagement and wedding photos have exploded in popularity the past few years and although we love Harry Potter, football and dinosaurs just as much as the next bride, what’s cool today can sometimes feel cheesy or gimmicky a few years later.

"Just like your invitations, flowers, menu and music choices should be a true reflection of you as a couple, so should your engagement and wedding photos," advise Korenberg and Pablo.

It’s great to get creative but only if it’s in line with your personality and demeanor. If wearing costumes or doing poses that don’t feel natural or genuine, they recommend nixing it. Not every photo needs a prop or a theme — sometimes the most beautiful shots are the ones that are the most simple.

8. Muted Color Palettes
Muted hues will always be pretty and bridal-appropriate but vendors are pointing their brides towards more vibrant, bold and creative color schemes.

“For summer and spring weddings, think fun color palettes like raspberry, tangerine and aqua. For fall and winter weddings, I like cranberry, navy and metallics such as copper, gold or rose gold,” says Jessica Tincopa of Jessica Elizabeth Photography.

Having trouble honing in on colors you like? Look to inspiration outside of the weddings world in architecture, paintings or nature.  For example, if you’ve always been a fan of purple, incorporate a pop of color into your décor, bridesmaid dresses or cake. "Just a little something goes a long way — if it’s always been your favorite, you won’t regret it!" she says.

9. Creative Signage
How many weddings have you been to that had the "pick a seat, not a side" sign hovering over the center aisle? "Cute? Yes, but so overplayed," says Erica Schnell of Crushed Ice Events.

She suggests spending the creativity and money on signage that will get the most exposure — think of unique ways to display your bar menu or out-of-the-ordinary seating charts. For a fun chalkboard effect, you can use special chalkboard paint to create a writeable surface.

10. Sparkler Sendoffs
Sparkler exits may look romantic and effortless but they actually require a lot of coordination. According to the pros at Blush Events, you need to get the ones that last four minutes and it can be challenging for the vendors to light them as quickly as possible and get everyone into the proper position.

Not to mention that they pose a safety risk when you’re dealing with big crowds of people. Samuels has seen both dresses and hair narrowly escape going up in flames on several occasions. "Nothing can kill a celebration faster than having your guests get burned or hurt in any way," she says.

Noisemakers, glow sticks, ribbon wands, confetti, pom-poms, bubbles and rose petals are all popular alternatives that will add color and excitement to your wedding photos.

Paralympic Medalist Amy Purdy Wears Minidress On Red Carpet, Flaunts Prosthetics

Our hats are off to Amy Purdy for proudly showing off her prosthetics on the red carpet.

The 2014 Team USA Paralympic bronze medalist proudly paired a minidress with her prosthetic legs Thursday night at the OK! TV Awards Party in Los Angeles, an inspiring choice her fans can't stop calling "beautiful" on social media.

(Story continues below.)

Purdy, 34, a 34-year-old pro snowboarder who also appeared on season 18 of "Dancing With the Stars," lost both of her legs at the age of 19 following a battle with bacterial meningitis.

Doctors gave Purdy a "less than 2 percent chance" of surviving the infection, which put her in a coma for nearly three weeks and also took her spleen, the hearing in her left ear and her kidneys. She ultimately persevered and returned to snowboarding, but only after building her own prosthetics, because snowboarding-specific ones didn't exist at the time.

Purdy returned to the hospital again a week before her 21st birthday for an organ transplant -- a kidney donated by her father. As before, she recovered and returned to physical activity, co-founding Adaptive Action Sports, a group dedicated to helping individuals with physical disabilities participate in action sports.

Speaking of her appearance on "Dancing With the Stars," Purdy told ABC she's proud to have helped knock down barriers.

"To be able to walk down the street and have people stop you, not just because they recognize you, but because you somehow personally touched them, it's amazing," she said. "In the past, if you saw a girl with prosthetic legs walking down the street, you can imagine people would kind of look and not know what to say, or maybe they are fascinated, or maybe they feel bad for you."

"But now when I walk down the street wearing a skirt, those lines have been blurred, barriers have been knocked down," Purdy continued. "They look at me for what I'm capable of instead of going, 'That girl has prosthetic legs.'"
