Guess what? Some of your sartorial choices are out of your hands. And, no, not in a puppet-pulling-the-strings kind of way. But, it may just be possible that our style preferences are a reflection of our astrological signs, developed with certain inherent penchants for one aesthetic over another.

30 Of The Greatest MTV VMA Moments Of All Time

This year marks a milestone anniversary for the MTV Video Music Awards. Over the past 30 years, the music show has delivered some of the wildest and most memorable moments in pop culture history.

In 1984, the annual event debuted with a performance of "Like A Virgin" by Madonna. Michael Jackson, Nirvana and TLC, among many others, left their mark in the years that followed. Then, in 2000, Britney Spears stole the crown to become Queen of the VMAs with a half-naked rendition of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Oops! ... I Did It Again!" Her reign would continue through a python performance and a kiss with Madonna.

It's clear the MTV VMAs -- with its hijacked speeches, meat dresses and surprise baby announcements -- rarely fail to deliver.

Check out some of the greatest moments from the show below. Watch the 2014 VMAs live from Inglewood, California, Sunday, Aug. 24, at 9 p.m. EST on MTV.

How To Mix And Match Chairs Like A Pro

Switching up seating arrangements has become hugely popular as of late, and it's no wonder why. The concept is a simple way to add some major personality to a room and gives a space an eclectic, lived-in feeling. Yet, many people refrain from trying the trend, as breaking up the usual repetition can be intimidating and has the potential to look sloppy if it's done wrong. So what's the "right" way to go about it?

As New York interior designer Vicente Wolf told the Wall Street Journal, "It's like planning a dinner party. You wouldn't want all your guests to be too similar; that wouldn't make for an interesting evening. You want variety -- yet compatibility. Same with your dining chairs."

And while that sounds easy enough, we've rounded up the tips and tricks that will help make things even easier...

Break things up with a bench.

bench

A bench provides the eye with a place to rest -- the arrangement will stand out, but not overwhelm, the viewer. Benches are also a nice way to switch things up while giving off a welcoming, comfortable vibe.

Contrast the old with the new.

contrast

The key is making your decor decisions look intentional, and pairing similar modern pieces with vintage options is a great way to do just that.

Stick with a scheme.

scheme

Whether you choose a consistent aesthetic or color palette, the look is much easier to master when there's a central theme.

Keep a consistent height.

height

Keep one element, such as height, the same and change up all the rest.

Play with fabric.

fabric

If you're looking for a more subtle way to nail the trend, try using the same seating with varied fabrics. You can play with different patterns in the same color scheme or try subtle variations of the same print.

Put the odd men on the end.

odd man end

Like goes with like, so place the matching chairs on the sides of the table and balance the space out by putting the mismatched versions at the heads of the table.

Or keep them on the same side.

same side

You can also make one side of the table your "statement" side by grouping the different chairs here. It works especially well if it's the first side you see when entering the dining room or kitchen.

Splash one with some color.

splash

Not ready to go all out with the trend? Keep all your seating the same with the exception of one or two chairs that match in every way except color.

Tie them together with bold accents.

accents

No matter what styles, shapes and sizes you're working with, never underestimate the power of throw pillows and other decorative pieces. Use them to flawlessly incorporate your seating into a cohesive space.

We didn't see it coming, but this week we were graced with the best Ice Bucket Challenge video yet, featuring the one and only editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. We love her daughter, Bee, for nominating her, and we're positive that the rest of Twitter agrees. Almost every fashion outlet had something to say about the video, though most comments expressed some sort of shock that this particular fashionista went through with the challenge.

Laverne Cox's reign over the media is nowhere near over.

The latest magazine lucky enough to snag the Emmy-nominated trans actress and activist is V, which tapped Casey Spooner to photograph her for its fall issue.

According to a press release sent to The Huffington Post, "for Issue 91, V has brought together their group of Rebels, nominated by their colleagues and comrades." Cox was nominated for the special showcase by "Orange is the New Black" co-star Natasha Lyonne.

In the issue, Cox discussed why Sophia, her character on the hit Netflix show, is unlike almost any other trans character that has come before her.

“I think that before Sophia, for the most part, representations of trans folks were comic relief," she told writer William Defebaugh. "We’ve been victims, we’ve been mostly talked about in terms of our transition and being trans, but in a lot of ways Sophia gets to be just another woman in Litchfield, with a different experience and a different story.”

For more from Cox and V, check out the fall issue when it hits newsstands on September 10 or head here.

7 Things That Make A House A Home (That Can't Necessarily Be Bought)

$
0
0
There comes a point in every life where your dreams are run over by the steamroller of reality. For me, it was the idea of a home that looked like something out of "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Over the years, I hoarded vintage everything and anything, sacrificing space, sanity and occasionally my shins as I'd knock into a too-low nightstand found for $5 at a thrift store. While I had imagined a man living with me in this outdated wonderland, he was a vague apparition that I assumed would periodically offer me a martini as I carefully guided a jaunty chandelier into place.

When the man materialized, however, he was one with a strong "collector" streak. He came complete with an unusually large amount of comic books, Swedish death metal t-shirts and seemingly hundreds of WWE figurines that often became hazards. After Rowdy Roddy Piper landed squarely on my head, there came an ugly moment where I screamed "I'm going to THROW ALL OF THESE THINGS OUT."

And it was at that very moment where I recognized the voice as not being my own. It was the voice of an a**hole.

My significant other subscribed to the ersatz "Mad Men" fantasy, as long as he could have his (many) things in the picture. Bumps on the head aside, it's nothing to freak out about. In fact, it's what keeps our home from becoming a museum. You might not see our place on, say, Apartment Therapy or Design*Sponge, but no one ever looks at the apartment and asks: "How can you live like that?" There is no official "taste police" that'll punish you for, say, eating off of a souvenir plate of Lititz, Pennsylvania. Your only enemy is yourself.

In the spirit of embracing one's home, flaws and all, here is an unofficial list of other things that make your house into a home.

The "House Smell."
house a home
No, it's not a disgusting smell, or one that indicates filth. It's the distinct aroma of a (clean) home that you only notice when you leave for an extended period of time and return. Everyone's house smells different.

Your Pet, Where It Isn't Supposed To Be
pet on sofa
I can buy Cookie all the beds she could ever need, but she'll still curl up at the precise corner of my bed where a sunbeam alights at exactly 3 p.m.

The Mass Of Books, DVDs and CDs That Resist Progress
home bookshelf
They fill our shelves, yet we can't get rid of 90% of them.

An Obstacle Course Of Shoes Strewn Through The Hallway
shoes in hallway
Because there's no greater feeling in the world than taking off your shoes after a long day.

The Hand-Me-Down Piece Of Furniture
old furniture
It's not vintage. It's not an antique. But it used to be in your grandmother's house and it was given to you for your first place. Of course, it doesn't match anything. Who cares?

Your "Unloading Zone"
hall table mail
This is the place you throw your keys, purse and mail as soon as you get in. It could be a small table, a counter, a bookcase or even the dining room table. It is usually characterized by a mess.

Cheesy But True: Happiness, However You Define It
It nearly hurts me to write this, that's how cheesy it is. But, if your home is relatively a happy one -- even if you define happiness as zoning out in front of repeat viewings of "Regular Show," which I'm told is not something successful adults watch but who really cares -- then your mess magically becomes more acceptable. If you spend your evenings screaming into the void, a mess is then a warning sign.

Kate Moss Gets Wet For The Ice Bucket Challenge

We love seeing style icons unbutton their Peter Pan collars and use their influence for a great cause like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. (You get a pass Anna Wintour for not removing your signature black shades.) But we were shocked to stumble upon a video of Kate Moss getting dumped with buckets of ice water.

Moss' go-to makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury uploaded an Instagram video on Saturday of the 40-year-old wearing a tiny black bikini and tons of gold rings before getting soaked.

"Kate has asked me to upload her ice bucket challenge for her... Please support ALS and raise money for this very worthy cause," Tilbury wrote.

The model called out in her girlish voice Liv Tyler, Jack Nicholson and BBC Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge and spread awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called "Lou Gehrig's Disease."

Moss' best friend Naomi Campbell took a stand for ALS in a really hot way. And earlier this week, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington followed through and even got their kids in on the movement.

Watch these supermodels (and more!) get super wet in the videos below and visit ALSA.org to find out how you can help.

Wearing makeup every day can be a chore. That's why the HuffPost Style editors usually take the no makeup route. But the soft and pretty look Chloë Grace Moretz has been sporting lately has persuaded us to put in a little more effort each morning.

The "If I Stay" actress' dewey skin is highlighted with groomed brows, well-blended eyeshadow, the right amount of mascara and barely-there lipstick.

Check out Chloë Grace Moretz's ethereal makeup look below, and find out which other celebs made this week's best and worst beauty list.

BEST: Chloe Moretz

chloe grace moretz

Moretz makes this red carpet beauty thing look easy peasy with a chignon hairstyle with face-framing pieces, bronze eye makeup and powder pink lipstick that matches her embellished sheath dress.

BEST: Kate Mara

The "House of Cards" star's chestnut hair color warms up her complexion and makes her brown eyes pop. And her lashes look almost unreal thanks to the right lengthening mascara. Tell us your secrets, Kate!

BEST: Jessica Alba

jessica alba

This lady nails it every single time. From her glossy, ombre hair to her subtle blue eyeshadow, Alba strikes the balance between cool and glamorous.

BEST: Rosario Dawson

rosario dawson

Dawson's undercut is really starting to grow on us now that her shorn locks have grown in a bit. With skin this perfect, rose-tone shadows help to accentuate her glow.

BEST: Jenny McCarthy

jenny mccarthy

McCarthy kicked off this awards season on a beautiful note wearing side-swept curls, sparkling silver eye makeup and berry pink lipgloss.

WORST: Juno Temple

juno temple

While this is the most styled we've ever seen the English actress' golden blonde hair, the wavy ringlets are giving off bad perm vibes.

WORST: Charis Lincoln

charis lincoln

We're all for experimenting with wild and unnatural hair colors. But this eye-dilating purple shade with the matching eyeshadow, contacts AND lipstick is too cartoonish.

WORST: Zoe Bell

zoe bell

The New Zealand stuntwoman and actress attempted the bright under-eye liner trick, but the bronze shade looks too stark with her over-powdered face.

WORST: Lady Gaga

What is there to really say about this look? Lady Gaga's style just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

WORST: Jaime King

jaime king

A ballerina bun is classic. We just wish that King's updo wasn't so tight, as it makes the 35-year-old look like she attempted to keep it youthful up top to balance out her sexy LBD.

Two-Tone Earrings, Fur Stoles And More Amazing Accessories Of The Week

There are some big accessories trends going on right now and it appears as though all our favorite fashion girls are testing them out.

Between Alexa Chung's furry stole, Danielle Bernstein's pearl jewelry and Tanesha Awasthi's scarf-turned-headband, we have a pretty clear idea of what we plan on wearing this fall.

Check out all the best accessories of the week and let us know which ones you love!

Danielle Bernstein's rings

We've told you once and we'll tell you again -- pearls are IN.

Rihanna's sunglasses and Balenciaga bag

Riri's crocodile bag and brown velvet sunglasses add texture and dimension to her otherwise neutral ensemble.

Maria Sharapova's Aquazzura shoes

maria

Pay attention to Sharapova's footwear because ankle straps are very tricky to pull off. If you pick ones that hit too high up they can cut of your legs and make you appear shorter. And if the straps are too tight, it will make your legs look bigger. Here, the tennis player has found the perfect balance.

Alexa Chung's Charlotte Simone X Kyle De’Volle fur stole

Why wait until fall to wear furry accessories? Pair your stole with a floral dress and you've got the perfect ensemble to transition you into the cooler temps.

Rosario Dawson's pearl earrings

Statement earrings are so underrated, but they can completely transform an outfit -- especially if you go two-tone ones.

Tanesha Awasthi's scarf

This isn't the first time we've seen scarves used as headbands and it certainly won't be the last.

9 Decor Ideas For Your Nightstand From Real-Life Homes

$

While everyone's wondering what to do about their lackluster headboard or how to arrange the bed to maximize the room's space, there's a part of the bedroom that's being totally neglected -- the nightstand.

An amazing place for storage, odds and ends and a good read, the night table has been overlooked for far too long. And now, it's time to give them the attention they deserve.

1. Use a tray to keep the space clutter-free.

2. Put your nighttime reads and your personality on display.

3. Think outside the box and use a crate, some stacked suitcases or even a swing instead.

4. Fresh flowers are always a sure bet.

5. Choose soft, calming lighting -- or, just fire up some candles instead.

6. Add a chair and, voila, you've got a desk.

7. Go minimal and let your headboard continue to shine.

8. ...or, go ahead and let your nightstand be the bold focal point your bedroom's begging for.

9. And always (always) leave room for a cup of tea.

How I Learned To Love Myself Without Makeup

$
0
0
I can remember when I first started wearing makeup.

My mom, aunt and grandma were always very nicely put together with flattering makeup and accessories, and I remember that giddy feeling in my stomach when I looked in the mirror and felt like I was starting to look like them when I added a little mascara. My friends were starting to wear it too, and I was very pleased to know I would be included in this new stage of womanhood. It can all seem very harmless, and it felt that way to me at the time. But the problem is that this was the stage in my young life that my entire body was changing. Everything about the way I looked and how much I cared about the perceptions of my peers was changing.

This is where the problem originally begins with makeup. It isn't about a style preference or even whether or not you chose to wear makeup; it's about the deceptive notion that we need makeup to be complete. We establish a love for ourselves at a young age based upon an appearance that isn't truly who we are.

I was the extreme example of this problem. I couldn't stand to see myself without makeup until I was almost 20 years old. I used to reapply makeup at sleepovers. I would wear it to field hockey camp in spite of the sweat that would force it to burn my eyes. I would edit my photos for hours to fit my expectation of blur on my skin and contrast on my eyes and lips. I would sneak away in the mornings of vacations before my high school boyfriend would wake up so that I could put makeup on before he had a chance to see what I truly looked like in the morning. I never saw any problem with this at the time. Now, it inspires an instant lump in my throat.

I learned to love an image in the mirror with more defined eyes and even toned skin. That was the only me I wanted to see. I never learned to love what I really look like. Even now, when I close my eyes and imagine how I look and how other people see me, I imagine myself with makeup on. Many of you reading this probably do as well. It's a problem, and one that begins when we are girls. We start wearing makeup before we even have a chance to know who we are without it, let alone love who we are without it.

Most girls didn't grow up with quite the dependence that I once had, but many are guilty of thinking that a clean face is an empty one. However, the most severe of our crimes are passing those feelings on to young girls when they are trying to establish self-love. Many reading this would be embarrassed to be seen at the store by someone they know without their makeup on. Many reading this have felt the need to cover up their wrinkles, blemishes and anything deemed an imperfection. Many reading this have seen a person who normally wears makeup without it and felt they looked wrong. The truth is that being without makeup isn't backwards and wrong, our mindsets are. It isn't about whether or not you choose to wear makeup; it's about the reasons that you do so.

Understand the grave importance of establishing a love for yourself. If you are a mother or a female role model of any kind, the moment that you start allowing a young girl to wear makeup is not a fun little milestone, it's a responsibility. If you give that kind of influence to someone trying to build their confidence amongst all of the other changes with their body and peers, there can be powerful effects. Start with yourself. I've learned that with every passing day I can make little changes to love who I am more. I now intentionally decide not to wear make-up on some days. When I first started dating my boyfriend, I decided to go make-up less right away instead of be ashamed like I was when I was younger. I've started wearing less of it and introducing my true face to the people around me because make-up needs to be a choice and not a necessity. I do this because I know in my heart I deserve that confidence, and because I never want my own insecurities to effect women of any age that are in my life, including my future daughters. I want to keep changing for the better and inspire all strong and beautiful women to do the same. Let people love you for who you are underneath.

You don't have to cut makeup out of your life completely; you just have to live with the mindset that it is addition to your beauty, not something that is necessary to complete it. Pass that confidence on to your daughters and nieces. Pass it on to your friends. Keep it in your soul and let it shine through your true beauty.

On the Road to The Emmys With My Entourage aka My Kids

$

0
I've been producing comedy for 15 years and producing my family for 11. Some days it feels like I have 150 kids, if I count the cast and crew on my shows. This year I got another Emmy nomination as a producer on the HBO series, Veep starring Julia Louis Dreyfus.

I've been on the road with my entourage, my three kids, since the nominations were announced on July 10th. We've been living out of two suitcases as we trek up and down the East Coast.

Summer has been a mix of work with play, juggling their boredom and my excitement. They've been shoved onto airplanes, scolded by train conductors and eaten too many car snacks to count. They picked up bad habits and I picked up five pounds.

Along the way, I've been hunting for an Emmy dress, and my entourage was given a job, to help their mama find a dress, and it turned out to be the best time I've ever spent "shopping."

Dress #1. Lady In Red -- Baltimore

After stops in Virginia, we arrived in Baltimore -- home to Veep. The car ride was long, but fairly easy and we didn't hit the dreaded gridlock outside of DC. Dress #1 was waiting for me. I pulled it out of the box and immediately fell in love. It did not share my affections. I squeezed into it and my daughter gasped in horror. The boys just stared at me, speechless. I looked like a sausage overflowing it's casing. I put it back in the box and vowed to find a new love, soon.

Dress #2 Metallic Demise -- Wrightsville Beach, NC

We made the drive in record time and spent several days at the beach. On the last day, after riding every water slide in sight, dress #2 arrived. The store suggested ordering one size larger since it ran small. Ran small? I'm not sure this would fit my daughter, maybe not even her Barbies. Worse the fabric was so metallic and shiny, it looked like a disco ball. My oldest son swore he could see his reflection in it and started making funny faces. Enough said.

Dress #3 A Beaded Affair -- Back in Baltimore

I know this drive so well that I plan our pit stops based on the drive through Starbucks locations. It takes about eight hours if you're lucky and on this trip, we were not. The dreaded gridlock could not be avoided, nor could the meltdowns my entourage had. One by one they lost it, either fighting or crying or both. I did my best to break up the kicks and pinches from the driver seat but by the time we got to Baltimore it was my turn to cry. Instead, a beautiful Jenny Packham gown was waiting for me. The beading was so delicate, I was afraid to try it on plus, it weighed like 10 pounds. I put it on over my clothes in the office bathroom and watched as my co-workers tried their best at complimenting me. They were so sweet and really trying to see the best of the dress. My entourage didn't see anything good about this one and just rolled their eyes and asked what was for dinner.

Dress #4, 5 & 6 I Hit the Repeat Button -- New York City
Apparently my entourage doesn't like sleeping alone while we're on the road and after several nights of musical beds, I was exhausted. We looked like the scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where the entire family is in one bed, except in our version Grandpa Joe has been recast by four grumpy people. Lack of sleep led to lack of common sense, as I hand carried the 10-pound dress back to NYC. I needed to give it a fair chance and try it on without my clothes underneath. Surely, it would look better in the privacy of my own room. Surely, it did not, so I threw in the towel and made plans to wear an old dress. I've managed to collect quite a few over the years and there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Carolina Herrera, except the hole in the back from where I stepped on it at last year's Emmys.

Dress #7 & 8 More Beads -- Mid Flight
A few hours into our flight to Los Angeles, I realized that this Emmy nomination deserved it's own dress and I really wanted a new dress, one that I could feel smart and sexy in. (no small feat for an evening gown) and besides we were having fun. Somewhere over Colorado, I ordered two beaded beauties. Two days after we touched down in LA, they arrived at our hotel. After schedule meetings, casting sessions and a day at Universal Studios, I tried on the first one. It was definitely a contender and I felt smart and sexy until my youngest son started patting my stomach. I said hello to my little friend, Bob (my belly) who was not so little. Perhaps I shouldn't have eaten that churro while waiting in line for The Mummy Ride. The next dress was all beads, all the time, head to toe and once again my oldest son was convinced he could see his reflection. My daughter said she liked the color but really this dress belongs on a Miss America contestant.

Dress #9 The Keeper -- LA
In between meetings, I decided to go shopping in person. Imagine the horror of actually having to try something on in person! It's been so long I wasn't sure I would know how to behave. All the new dresses so far had come from online shopping and it must be said that I usually have great success with that. It's my vice. I stepped inside the store and within seconds I saw it, The Dress. Within minutes, and after struggling with the slip, it was on my body and it fit like a glove. Of course, the second time I tried it on I realized it has a lace back, so I'm dealing with bra issues but I love this dress and I love the journey I've been on with my kids. I decided to surprise my entourage and not let them see it until Emmy Monday.

As for my hair, I took a poll and the entourage can't decide between an up-do or straight. For the shoes, I'm going with a old pair that my daughter loves and my feet are familiar with, this way I'll have the advantage over those blisters that want to join the party.

On Emmy morning, my form of pampering will most likely be a battle between getting myself dressed and breaking up fights between my entourage. We're back to musical beds again and I can feel the meltdowns coming. Mine included, but I know when I walk out the door, I'll leave with hugs and kisses of good luck and possibly a stain or two on the dress.
