This Is Lazy-Girl Chic At Its Finest

If you've ever found yourself in Forever 21 or H&M, desperately searching for the runway-worthy finds in a sea of festival-wear, you might have had a revelation: sometimes, a smaller selection is so much better. Especially when, in the case of luxe-basics brand AYR, that relatively small selection is full of perfectly-cut pieces that go together like a dream and invite lots of compliments from fashion girls.

These Nikes Are Nuts, In A Good Way

I always want to groan whenever a fashion editorial calls a fashion item "a conversation starter." Mainly because I want to think women have other things to talk about besides their earrings. So instead let's call these Nike Blazer Mids "icebreakers" -- not because they look like some advanced form of breath-saving gum, but because if you wear them people you don't know will stop you more often than a supermodel with a golden-retriever puppy.

Beyonce Gave You The Definition Of Feminism, Now Use It

We’ve transitioned from a VMA buzzword of “twerk” to “feminist,” as Vanity Fair Hollywood blogger Joanna Robinson tweeted on Sunday night. It does seem like we've come a long way. Since The Miley Incident of 2013, Beyonce has made the definition feminism go viral. On Sunday, she projected Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's words yet again, a powerful statement of the concept which has since become trendy. “Are you a feminist?” interviewers seem required to ask, as celebrities do little to cover their confusion, while deciding whether the F-word is trendy enough yet. Except, if the rest of Sunday's misogyny at the VMAs was any indication, identifying with the buzzword hardly makes any difference.

It's frustrating when celebrities say they are not feminists (or that they're actually humanists or that they just really like men). Hearing famous women (or men!) in the spotlight proudly declare that they believe "in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes" -- as the Bey-approved Adichie definition states -- is empowering (or, at least, normalizing) and hard to argue as a bad thing. It's also often an empty claim.

1120bey

A most powerful example of this came in Taylor Swift’s recent interview with The Guardian. Recounting her previous rejection of the word, Swift said she not only is a feminist, but realized she has been all along -- something she only understood via her friendship with Lena Dunham. This revelation comes as a handy example of the stigma associated with the concept. It also casts focus on how much emphasis we put on mere definition.

Fighting the misconceptions is important and celebrities identifying as feminists can be glamorizing. But all of that is meaningless if the people who are proud of the word don’t do anything about it. Consider the rampant sexism in Sunday night's VMAs banter. This included but was not limited to:

  • Jay Pharoah making predatory comments about Ariana Grande being “too young"

  • Lorde's nomination for Best Rock Video being announced along with “there’s even a woman in the mix”

  • Snoop Dogg replying to Gwen Stefani saying “The ladies are taking over” with “I ain’t mad at that: twerk, twerk”

This is not to say we ought to expect all of the self-proclaimed feminists in the audience to shout "Stop the patriarchy!” in unison. That would be great television, if unrealistic. Instead, the take home from the VMAs is that all of the stuff feminism is fighting against is still wildly rampant even in the face of Bey’s bedazzled Power Point presentation. The VMAs are like a petri dish for all of the misogynistic crap in the music industry: It is the reality of refusing to accept women as legitimate artists and reducing them to sexual objects boiled down into a handy two-hour television special.

Hell, Beyonce and Lena Dunham can teach classes to the world sponsored by Dove and Merriam Webster. None of it will mean anything if no one actually does anything about being a feminist. This is not about the short-term reality of the VMAs. It is about speaking out and acknowledging instances of misogyny. It’s about fighting for equal pay or against rape culture. It’s about ensuring that women have control over their bodies, that they are fairly represented in leadership positions and in the media. It’s about demanding change to the systematic prevalence of unequal power relations between men and women. It’s about respect. So, go on, Hollywood, say loudly that you are all a bunch of feminists. It will be as impactful as declaring you are all unicorns, unless you actually do something about it.

A Comprehensive Look Back At Our Favorite Swimsuits

$

L ove them or hate them, bathing suits are an essential part of our beach going experience. While there are some discrepancies as to just how long they've been around (two-pieces have been worn since as early as 1400 B.C.) there is no denying their summer staple status.

It's not really surprising then, that multiple people have claimed the rights to inventing the bikini -- both fashion designer Jacques Heim and mechanical engineer Louis Reard say they're the first. They can, however, agree on at least one thing: its birthplace. Both cite the French Riviera as its original home in 1946.

Bathing suits have come a long way since ancient times. They have evolved through a slew of styles -- high waisted, one-piece, string and cut-out, to name a few -- and will bring in an estimated $17.6 billions in 2015 alone. They even have an entire magazine devoted to women wearing them. But when you take a look at some of the most iconic looks over the years, one thing is for sure: they have, and always will be, in style.

Of course, there have been some suits that have simply made a more lasting impression than others.

Behold, some of our favorite swimsuits from the last century and today.

5 Things You Need To Know About Interacting With Me, a Fat Girl Who Wears Revealing Clothes

$
0
0
So, if you've ever seen full-length pictures of me, you probably know that I'm a fat girl.

2014-08-18-ScreenShot20140817at11.34.29PM.jpg

I'm also a body image and fat positive activist, which basically means that I don't believe there is anything inherently wrong or bad about being fat. In fact, I love being fat.

Since I enjoy wearing a lot of clothing that reveals my skin and shows off my body, like crop tops, short skirts and shorts, bikinis, leggings and tight dresses, I have to deal with a lot of backlash. Because god forbid a fat woman likes the way she looks and lets the world know it.

Because fat girls aren't supposed to take pleasure in our bodies or even consider showing other people what they look like, there is a lot of sh*t that can hit the fan. Mostly caused by other people not knowing how to handle someone as sexy as me owning it.

The good news is that the fat positive movement is starting to take off and people are starting to notice. The #fatkini hashtag has gone viral on Twitter, plus sizes are starting to be sold in the stores of hip and trendy retailers like Forever 21 and H&M, and fat is starting to lose some of it's stigma as a bad word. We're making progress.

Despite this, though, some people really need to get an education in how to treat fat girls who like to show off our curves some respect. Because I've received way too many dirty looks from strangers on the street this summer while sporting my crop tops and booty shorts.

Here are five things you need to know about interacting with fat fatshionistas:

1. You Need to Get Over It.

Seriously, take a seat. Actually, take several.

If you're offended by me showing my stomach or the way my thighs jiggle, you need to f*ck off. My body is my own and no one has the right to tell me what to do with it. Period.

Boohoo, you have to look at a fat woman's body.

You do realize that we live in a world filled with violence and oppression, right? Start getting angry about that and leave my fatness out of it.

2. Don't Stare. I'm a Person, Not Eye Candy.

The most common reaction I get from others when I wear revealing clothing are stares. Some people will sort of roll their eyes or look disgusted; others will just stare as if I'm some kind of art exhibit at a museum. Either way, there are a lot of stares.

Look, I understand that I'm challenging your views on fat womanhood and forcing you to question your beliefs and attitudes, but keep this contemplation to yourself. Yes, I do notice when you're looking. Yes, it does make me feel uncomfortable.

I'm not some sort of object to be admired; I'm a human being first and foremost. Respect my right to choose to be fabulous and move it along.

3. Keep (Most, But Especially Negative) Comments To Yourself

You might have the urge to shame me for daring to own my sexiness as a fat girl, or you may even want to compliment me for my taste. But either way, I really don't want to hear about it.

I'm just trying to get a latte at Starbucks, get to class or finish writing an article; I really don't want to engage in conversation about my identity.

Sure, positive comments can be cool, flattering even, but I notice a lot of these comments are objectifying. If you have something nice to say, find an even nicer way to say it. If you're about to tell me I have nice tits, don't. Just tell me I look nice today.

I can appreciate a good compliment, but I also don't want to hear comments about my body. Stick to my outfit; as a fatshionista, that's what I care about the most, anyway.

4. Never, EVER, Fat Shame Me

My mom has this thing she likes to do when I decide to show skin; tell me I don't look "appropriate." It's funny how everywhere I go in the summertime, I see girls wearing short-shorts, but the second I show some upper thigh, suddenly, I don't look "appropriate."

What exactly is appropriate and who invented this stupidity?

Part of being an adult means choosing my own attire. The law only requires that I cover my nipples (don't even get me started about that) and my genitalia; everything else is fair game. So since I haven't started practicing public nudity yet, I'm good.

These comments she makes stay with me and because I'm a fat girl with an eating disorder, trigger me. That's why it's even more important to me than anything that people be respectful, because if they aren't it can send me into a spiral.

If you think I'm gross or need to cover up, refer to number 1 and 3 on this list.

5. Let Me Know I'm Doing Some Good

Some days, I need encouragement, like anyone else. So seeing people like my Instagram photos of my bare belly or telling me I look beautiful in a YouTube comment makes me feel good.

More importantly, it encourages me to keep pushing boundaries.

So if you think what I'm doing is awesome, or if you even like an outfit I'm wearing, tell me. You don't have to give me a full-out compliment, but even just favoriting a picture or tweet, or sharing this article is enough.

In fact, it's the best thing you can do.

Britney Spears Responds To Katy Perry's Denim Outfit Homage At The VMAs

As it turns out, the outfit throwback came from a previous Twitter conversation between the '90s pop princess and Perry, who went home last night with the Best Female Video award for "Dark Horse." On Aug. 22, Spears posted a video of her impression of Woody Woodpecker, which Perry then retweeted with compliments:

Spears then responded with a challenge to Perry to share her own best impression. The pop star replied with a little hint:

Perry did indeed follow through with her promise, and we're not surprised Spears was pleased with the results!

Levi's Plan To Save Blue Jeans: Make Them More Like Yoga Pants

Call it a race for your bottoms.

American denim companies are locked in a technology battle to improve women's pants, as more and more women abandon jeans for stretchy leggings and yoga pants.

Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian is still a denim fan.

Jean-sellers like Levi Strauss and VF Corporation, which owns Lee, Wrangler and 7 For All Mankind, are scrambling to add more stretch to their fabrics to appeal to the growing number of people seeking clothes that are both comfortable and flattering. Meanwhile, pioneers of form-fitting garments like Spanx are working to create springy pants that look like jeans and steal customers loyal to denim.

"Today's consumer is on a quest for casual comfort, whether it's jeans or yoga pants," James Curleigh, the president of the Levi's brand, told The Huffington Post.

Last fall, Levi launched its new Revel women's fit, jeans that use a patent-pending "Liquid Shaping Technology," a flexible coating applied to the inside of the pants. The coating is supposed to limit the stretch of the fabric in specific areas in order to slim the wearer's thighs and fit more comfortably. The super-soft material will "keep its shape while showing off yours," the company boasts.

And in 2013, Levi opened the Eureka Lab, a research facility in San Francisco for developing prototype pants. The company is playing with possibly integrating materials like Dyneema, a strong lightweight fiber, into its signature denim.

Under its Lee brand, VF launched a trio of new bendy jeans for women in August. The Heavenly Touch, Curvy Fit and Easy Fit lines use extremely soft denim fabric, but still look like regular denim.

Scott Baxter, head of the jeanswear business at VF, told HuffPost that it took years to get the jeans from the drawing board to store shelves.

"You're starting to see all of the hard work from our folks starting way back in 2010," said Baxter. "It takes a while to develop it and get it through the system."

VF is also opening a denim innovation center near its headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, later this year to ensure that new advancements keep coming. Previously, the company typically focused on projects that took between six months and two years to complete. With the new center, VF wants a central location to work on "breakthrough" ideas that may take even longer to develop, said Baxter.

Smaller jean-makers have mobilized too. Canada-based Silver Jeans Co. created a hybrid denim jean and yoga pant. Dubbed "Joga Jeans," the pants combine a traditional denim exterior with a plush knit, sweatpants-like interior.

Denim has struggled to compete against pliable pants. Total U.S. jean sales fell 6 percent over the past year, according to recent data from market research firm NPD Group. Sales of women's jeans were slightly worse, dropping 7 percent. Pricey denim took the biggest hit. Sales of jeans that cost $75 and up plummeted 32.5 percent from March 2013 to March 2014, NPD found.

Levi laid off 800 employees in March. In July, it announced a 76 percent drop in profits for the prior quarter, falling to $11.5 million from $48.1 million during the same period a year ago. Revenue for VF's jean brands was down 1 percent last quarter, including a 7 percent decrease for Lee. And Lucky Brand Jeans is finding its bearings after its parent company Fifth & Pacific (now known as Kate Spade & Co.) jettisoned the denim business and sold it to a private equity firm in December.

Kids are migrating away from denim too. For the first time ever, leggings were ranked the most popular trend among female teens this spring, according to a study from financial services firm Piper Jaffray.

"Jeans are as much of a wardrobe staple as a white shirt," said Lauren Sherman, editor-at-large at Fashionista. "But fashion is cyclical, and like any brand or item of clothing it will gain and lose popularity as the tide changes."

The movement away from jeans is due to the rise of something the industry calls "athleisure" -- stretch clothes that work outside of the gym.

"This is the new denim," Gap CEO Glenn Murphy declared of stretchy leggings in February while touting the success of Athleta, the yoga-wear company it bought in 2008. Murphy said his two huge mass-market brands, Gap and Old Navy, would be moving toward athleisure clothing too. Athletic-wear would now be touted more at the front of stores, instead of being relegated to its usual spot in the undergarment section.

With the jean-sellers infringing on their turf, athletic-wear companies like Lululemon, Nike, Under Armour and Adidas are also working intensely in their R&D labs.

"The athletic companies are really stepping it up in terms of design and fabric," said Ali Pew, market editor at InStyle magazine. "They don't want to lose their customer to everyone else entering the space."

Even Spanx, the maker of slimming undergarments that devotees consider nothing short of body-shaping wizardry, has entered the jean fight. Its new chimeric spawn promises to combine "the look of jeans with the comfort of leggings," all while keeping "unwanted bulge at bay." Levi and J Brand also have jean lines that claim to make customers look skinnier.

Jennifer Aniston has officially completed the most romantic ALS Ice Bucket Challenge yet.

The star was nominated by her fiance Justin Theroux, who chose his famous partner when she was absent from his challenge video earlier in the week.

"I would like to challenge members of the Lab Theater Company in New York ... David Lynch, and because she's not here to see me do this, Miss Jennifer Aniston," Theroux said in the clip.

When it was Aniston's turn, her fiance was not just there to watch the actress get doused in icy water -- he dumped the bucket on her himself!

"Oh my god, this is the worst!" Aniston says after getting drenched, at which point Theroux leans down and gives her a loving kiss on the head.

Leave it to Aniston to both participate in a good cause and make us swoon at her adorable relationship all at the same time.

Miley Cyrus Might Have Called Ed Sheeran An 'A--hole' At The VMAs

$

Miley Cyrus apparently called Ed Sheeran an "asshole" as he passed by her when he went to accept the VMA award for Best Male Video on Aug. 24.

This is according to Us Weekly, Gossip Cop, Perez Hilton and a number of other websites who squinted hard enough at the GIF below to make out Cyrus apparently mouthing the words at Sheeran:

mileyedsheeranasshole

Perhaps not too surprisingly, Cyrus seems not to be a fan of the Sheeran's. It might have something to do with the fact he criticized the 21-year-old singer for her twerking in a September 2013 interview, telling The Mirror, "It’s a stripper’s move. If I had a daughter of mine, I wouldn’t want her twerking. When I first heard 'Wrecking Ball,' I thought it was a brilliant song. But the video distracts too much from it."

We can't say for certain if Cyrus did in fact call Sheeran an asshole, but given that Cyrus was the only one at the VMAs last night to use her award for a completely selfless cause, we don't really care what she may or may not have called him.

Flip Manicures, The Crazy New Nail Trend We Can't Wait To Try

$
0
0
In one of the weirdest, most innovative trends of the summer, people are now getting manicures on the OTHER side of their nails -- calling it a "flip manicure."

It sounds super bizarre (after all, who really looks at the OTHER side of your nails), but the fad is taking off with those who really like to keep up with celebrities. It was Ciara, after all, who inspired us to learn more about this look. (It's her nails below!)

mp

To get the lowdown on this look, we got in touch with Paintbox Creative Director Julie Kandalec, whose work has been featured in the likes of Vogue and Vanity Fair and multiple runway shows.

How is the flip manicure look achieved?

Essentially, it's done using either clear sculpting gel or liquid and powder (aka acrylic). The key here is that it is sculpted on a nail form -- not laid on a plastic tip. The Mylar pieces are laid in between two layers of the clear gel or acrylic, and when it's buffed smooth it has this gorgeous, colorful effect.

How long does it take to create this look?

Settle in, and get comfortable! A new set will take about 2 to 2.5 hours.

How long does this look typically last?

Until the natural nail is visible under it, so in the neighborhood of 2 weeks.

Would this type of nail last longer than Shellac or your average manicure?

Sometimes. Hard or sculpting gel or acrylic is stronger than gel polish; however, your nails still grow the same no matter what nail enhancement you have, so they will still need to be retouched every 2-3 weeks.

What type of clients normally go for this type of look?

The under the nail art look is definitely for fashion-forward, creative beauty lovers who get bored of the same old thing. They really like to push the envelope with their looks.

How expensive would this normally be?

It's safe to say pricing would vary greatly across the country, but figure $75-150 range for a brand new set.

Would you try a flip manicure?

Cutest couple of the night?

Ireland Baldwin and girlfriend Angel Haze hit the red carpet hand-in-hand at the MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, Aug. 24. The model was there to support her rapper love, who was nominated for Best Video With a Social Message for “Battle Cry,” featuring Sia.

In June, Haze opened up about her relationship with Baldwin during an interview with The Independent. She discussed the public's trepidation to accept them as more than just friends.

"An interracial gay couple, I mean that’s just weird for America right now," said Haze. "We fuck and friends don’t fuck. I have never fucked one of my friends. Once I see you in that way, it doesn’t happen. But we do fuck and it’s crazy and that’s weird to say because I think about it in terms of an audience reading it and them thinking, ‘What the hell?’ But it happens.”

Daniel Ducret Allegedly Used Kilt To Shoplift Electronics

A man suspected of using a specially-modified kilt to steal electronics wasn't able to skirt arrest.

Daniel Ducret, 37, was arrested Thursday on second-degree theft after employees at a Fry's Electronics store in Wilsonville, Oregon, allegedly saw him sliding small electronics items into the front pouch of his kilt.

The employees said Ducret first showed up in his kilt on Wednesday and allegedly used the pouch to steal items including a toy helicopter, according to OregonLive.com.

When Ducret came back on the next day, staff called Wilsonville Police, who arrested him.

Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputy Dan Kraus said officers found an audio car charger and a computer mouse in the pouch of Ducret's kilt, according to Newser.

Ducret's alleged shoplifting is causing an uproar in the kilt-wearing community.

“It gives kilts a bad name,” Jonny McLain, who owns Stumptown Kilts, a store with three locations in Portland, San Francisco and Petoskey, Michigan, told KOIN TV.

Kraus said Ducret's use of a kilt may have been his downfall.

"I don’t think there’s a graceful way to stick stuff inside a kilt,” he told the station.

Beyonce may have walked away from the VMAs with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and a 16-minute performance under her belt, but Nicki Minaj had a few career highs of her own. After delighting the audience with her performance of "Anaconda," Minaj went on to join Ariana Grande and Jessie J for "Bang Bang," and Usher for "She Came To Give It To You."

The sentimental moment came after the show, though, in Minaj's dressing room. "If Beyonce didn't walk into your dressing room and give you a diamond 'FLAWLESS' necklace, then there's no way you could be having a better week than me," Minaj wrote. "Lol. Awwwww thank u QUEEN. ur just a precious gem. I could never thank you enough for your influence on powerful women all around the world. #WeFlawless."

Earlier this month, in the middle of the night, Beyonce and Minaj dropped a remix to "Flawless," which lit up the Internet. We flawless, indeed.

8 Mediterranean Blue Rooms That Prove It's The Only Color Worth Knowing Right Now

Look out navy, there's a new shade of blue in town. Or, should we say, a new favorite shade of blue in town.

It's the same blue that reminds us of the sea it's named after; the one that gives those colorful Greek Isle homes their charm; and the "rich and fabulous" color designer Sara Story told House Beautiful we'll be seeing in rooms everywhere come 2015. We think she's right.

But before you go stock up on all the Mediterranean blue paint you can find, take a look at even more inspired ideas for using it...

Mediterranean blue packs a bold punch when painted as stripes.
1

It's a better backdrop for displaying blue accents than white.
2

A more teal-infused variation gives off a retro vibe.
3

Want to make white furnishings really stand out? This is the color to go with.
4

This shade of blue works equally well on walls and furnishings alike.
5

Think of it as a new kind of neutral... like our old friend navy.
6

Like other jewel tones, it's a warm way to welcome guests.
7

Not ready to commit to paint? A piece of art in the same hue works just as well.
