Miss America Admits She Was Forced Out Of Sorority, But Disputes Hazing Claims

NEW YORK (AP) — Miss America Kira Kazantsev said Tuesday that she was removed from her college sorority over a letter that made light of hazing, but she denied a report that she was involved in aggressively hazing fellow students.

Kazantsev said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that she was asked to leave the Alpha Phi sorority at Hofstra University after sending an email to alumni that included what she said was a joke about making an event "scary" for pledges. The website Jezebel reported Monday, based on an anonymous source, that Kazantsev was involved with aggressively hazing pledges. Kazantsev denied the report, saying it was untrue and hurtful.

Kazantsev says she was hazed herself as a pledge and that she took part in some hazing activities. She had been in charge of the sorority's recruitment committee.

"Everyone wants to be a part of something," she said. "At that time, unfortunately, that was just the culture of the university. I was hazed. I was brought up through the organization thinking that was appropriate behavior."

She said the hazing included being forced to stand in line, reciting information and sleepless nights crafting — "menial tasks," she called them.

The Miss America organization says that Kazantsev was open with them about being terminated from the sorority.

Kazantsev's pageant causes included preventing domestic violence and eliminating sexual assaults in the military.

A Hofstra spokeswoman said the university doesn't comment on or confirm the existence of any student conduct proceedings due to student privacy laws. A spokeswoman for Alpha Phi confirmed that Kazantsev is a former member of the sorority, but said that its privacy policy doesn't allow it to comment on details related to membership status changes.

The History Of Tattoos, In One Entertaining Animation

Tattoos are very popular; so popular, in fact, that an estimated one in five Americans now has one.

But tattoos are hardly a new trend.

According to this fascinating new video by TED-Ed about the history of tattoing, the art form is at least 8,000 years old, and the history of the tattoo is as rich and complex as it is long.

Did you know, for instance, that the word "tattoo" is believed to come from the Polynesian word "tatao," or that Queen Victoria was rumored to have a tattoo of a tiger fighting a python on her body? Even Ötzi, the frozen mummy who lived an estimated 5,000 years ago, was heavily inked. Who knew?!

Watch the TED-Ed above for more intriguing tattoo facts.

Crafty Bride Made Her Wedding Dress For $30 During Her Morning Commute

Wedding dresses cost a pretty penny -- unless you do what one bride did and make your own gown for less than the cost of a tank of gas.

Redditor alkikat posted pictures on Monday of the wedding dress she crocheted for herself during her morning bus commute (talk about multi-tasking).

If you think crocheting a dress would result in something only your grandmother would wear, think again. Here's the final result:

My Crochet Wedding Dress

According to the bride, the total cost for the dress was $30, which included the cotton thread and fabric for the lining. She even posted a time lapse video of her project -- which took a total of five months -- so you can see how the dress came together.

Black Women Defend Viola Davis And Themselves Against Bogus Beauty Standards

Calling Shonda Rhimes an “angry black woman” was not the only problematic part of the highly criticized New York Times article published last week.

Writer Alessandra Stanley described Viola Davis -- star of Rhimes’ new show "How To Get Away With Murder"-- as “less than classically beautiful.” It's needless to say, there were more than a few black women who took offense.

Viola Davis sharply returned with an elegant comeback, “You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise!!!”

Not that she needed to, black women across the internet came to her defense, as well as their own, with the hashtag #LessClassicallyBeautiful. If a picture is worth a thousand words, these tweeted photographs say it all. Labels and standards take heed, these are the faces of women who know they are beautiful.

From Finance To Fashion Week, One Woman's Path In Pursuit Of Good Underwear

$

As we have all heard (and experienced) before, looking great has a lot to do with feeling amazing in you're clothes, whether that be a proper fitting shirt, tailored pants or even .. the right underwear.

Not many people feel so passionately about the latter that they leave their careers in the name of properly fitting under garments. But Kerry O'Brien, founder and designer of Commando, is not like many others. The undie-expert ditched her longtime job in finance back in 2003 to start her own business centered around what goes underneath your clothes. Countless pieces on the runway and a patented elastic-free waistband later, O'Brien continues to revolutionize the way we get dressed.

While we've always been comfy-clothes advocates, running around at New York Fashion Week further solidified for us that effortless style begins by dressing with ease. Who better to chat with, then, than the woman who has spent eleven years thinking of ways to make undergarments easier and more comfortable to wear?

We chatted with O'Brien about the horrors of elastic, the secret to her continued success and how excited she was that a certain "bad girl" wore one of her designs.

On leaving her career in finance to start Commando:

"It wasn't really an 'aha!' moment. It was more like, 'Now I'm going to start a new chapter.' It gave me permission and made me rethink my life in a way. I felt like although everything in my life was going wonderfully in certain aspects, I didn't feel passionately about my career anymore."

On how undergarments make a fashion statement of their own:

"Your fashion moment starts the second you put on your underwear. In my opinion, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. People need to think about outfits in their entirety, which includes what goes underneath."

thongs
Commando's Double-Take Thong

On the evils of elastic:

"I have always resented elastic around my body. It interferes with my look, it creates lines. It's hard to feel beautiful and confident when your underwear is uncomfortable and digging into you. That's where the idea for the non-elastic waistband came from."

On the secret to her success:

"Instead of feeling shy about my ideas, I kept pushing the limits and asking how I could make them come to life. Doing that definitely took some fearlessness, which I needed to muster up at times, but it was worth it."

On committing to great underwear:

"You need to invest in underwear, just like you would with the perfect pair of boots or a great pair of black pants. You need to wear things that make you feel fabulous, that don't fight with your body but rather love and understand it."

On that time Rihanna wore Commando:

"I happened to be at the party [for the CFDA Fashion Awards] when Rihanna won the Style Icon award. She was wearing Commando underwear underneath that gorgeous Adam Selman dress, and her underwear was as visible as the dress! That was a lot of fun."

Lindsay Lohan Pitched Tina Fey A 'Mean Girls' Sequel

$

When "Mean Girls" celebrated its 10th anniversary this past April, Lindsay Lohan was the only cast member who "wasn’t available to comment" when the The New York Times ran an article on the film's enduring popularity.

While the 28-year-old's lack of participation in the piece would suggest she was trying to distance herself from her star-making role, Lohan, in fact, is game for an official "Mean Girls" sequel. She's actually got it all mapped out, and it can't be any worse than the ABC Family sequel "Mean Girls 2."

Lohan told Time Out London, "People really love the movie: how do you top that? I was with Tina Fey ['Mean Girls' writer] the other day and I said we should do another 'Mean Girls,' like an older version where they’re all housewives and they’re all cheating. That would be really funny. I’ll harass Tina to write it."

Don't hold your breath over that one.

Blackberry's New Plan To Save The Company Is... A Square Phone

If you're tired of rectangular smartphones for some reason, you're in luck: on Wednesday, BlackBerry released the 4.5-inch, very square BlackBerry Passport to the public.

The new device, which has a physical keyboard that overlays a touchscreen, is currently available through ShopBlackberry.com and Amazon for $599 as unlocked phones that must then be taken to wireless carriers. So far, only AT&T has signed on as an official carrier, though BlackBerry anticipates others will follow suit by the end of the year. AT&T has yet to reveal when it will start offering the phone or at what price, but BlackBerry expects carriers to sell the Passport for about $249 with a new contract.

The BlackBerry Passport will come in white and black.

The phone's square shape might be hard to get used to at first, but it's pretty similar in size to other "phablets" on the market. In fact, it's actually more compact than the 5.5-inch iPhone 6S. The Passport also boasts a 30-hour battery life (the iPhone lasts about 10 hours) and a screen that fits 60 characters per line (the iPhone fits 40 characters).

BlackBerry chief executive John Chen took a shot at the new iPhones Apple released last week, noting at a media event on Wednesday that the Passport doesn't bend. iPhone users have complained that their glitzy new devices were permanently damaged by bending in their pockets. On Tuesday, a gadget reviewer uploaded a video to YouTube that showed him bending an iPhone 6 Plus with his bare hands.

"I challenge you to bend the Passport," said Chen.

The square style was inspired by actual passports, a designer said. According to BlackBerry's official blog, the new phone is meant for "the working professional," and mentions uses for architects, mortgage brokers, doctors, investment bankers and writers. In BlackBerry's view, a square model makes sense for those who spend their days typing emails and viewing spreadsheets.

"The BlackBerry Passport will take you to new places on the best business trip you’ve ever had," the company proclaimed in the blog post.

BlackBerry says the square screen is perfect for the business community.

At the event, BlackBerry said users type four times more accurately with the Passport than with the previous model, the BlackBerry 10. The Passport's keyboard is wider and has enlarged keys.

“We designed it for somebody who’s looking for a durable product, a reliable product, and a beautiful product,”Alison Phillips, managing director of industrial design at BlackBerry, said in a video about the design.

Playlist Runway: Fashion, Music and Models at Mark McNairy SS15

Mark McNairy is the equivalent of your cool Uncle that does not give two f*cks what anyone else thinks. Mark McNairy is that Uncle to the fashion community. He doesn't have to care. McNairy is a member of the prestigious CFDA, was the former Creative Director for J.Press and collaborated with Bass shoes to modernize this classic American brand. Mark McNairy utilizes his expertise of American and English tailoring to create a brand that illustrates urban cool with New England college prep. His fashion week shows are a relaxing break from all the pomp and circumstance while inducing a fun environment for enjoying his latest collections.

His SS15 collection, titled "Whatever," as expected, was a tailored, "I don't give a f*ck" cool. The collection included tailored pieces, stand out prints and American swag. Models sauntered down the runway leisurely drinking Heineken's and even casted their hats into the audience during the final walk. Stylist Ololade Oguntayo commented that McNairy's menswear portion was, "Fresh and contemporary."

Mark McNairy has been inclusive of diversity on the runway before it even became considered "cool." Known for including musical artists and "real people" in addition to models on the runway, he amalgamates various sectors of artistry to birth creative fusion. Past Mark McNairy shows, rappers including Cam'ron and Pusha T have strutted down the runway and/or posed for his Lookbook. For his SS15 show, McNairy included hip-hop recording artist Travi$ Scott, who skipped and jumped down the runway (not planned) and Kris Bowers, the ultra-cool Julliard-trained pianist and 2011 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition winner.

Post show, I had the opportunity to talk to the alluring and modelesque, Kris Bowers -- the young, pianist that has the jazz world alive and excited fusing his classically trained background with his love for hip-hop, R&B, electronica and more. Kris' debut album Heroes and Misfits highlights his musical range. It jumps from elements illustrating his classically trained, Julliard background, to his funky rhythms and political opinion that explains to the listener why Kanye West included Kris' talent on the Grammy-award winning Watch the Throne album.

What made you interested in working with Mark McNairy?

Earlier this year, Mark came to a show of mine and approached me afterwards about possibly working together on a music project. He told me he had always had this dream of being a record producer, and really wanted to make an album. So, for me it was a no-brainer. I love Mark's stuff, and I love the collaborative process. Since then, we've been meeting and bouncing musical ideas back and forth to find a direction for the project. I'm pretty excited.

Kris and I also spoke about fashion as art and it's similarities to the musical art form. Music inspires fashion: songs are selectively chosen to evoke certain feelings from the crowd experiencing the show. A soundtrack is selected to place a model in a certain space for a campaign shoot. Fashion, in turn inspires music. Kris spoke a bit more about this has been personally influential on him.

I'm inspired by the imagination in fashion. I love how designers can exist at different points on the spectrum, from super-conventional clothing to wearable art, and everything in between. Or, how they feel free to mix styles, and incorporate pieces from different cultures. It's even inspiring to watch how a fashion house or label can develop over time, progressing and pushing boundaries, while maintaining their core identity. All of these things can relate to being a musician. I find that on some level, looking at how my favorite designers navigate through these decisions, reflect where I would like to exist with the music that I create.

What do you like about his style of clothing?

I love how Mark combines street fashion, classic tailoring and a bit of cheeky humor. It kind of matches my personality and taste exactly.

Kris, a fashion aficionado, and I continued to talk about clothing and style. We delved deeper into Kris' personal style and how moments in life and career have influenced his past and present style.

Growing up, being that I was musically into hip-hop and R&B in the 90s, my style reflected that. But once I was doing more work as a jazz musician and playing in those spaces, I began to develop a love for suits and more formal wear. Now, with the type of music that I'm creating and involved with, I can feel free to mix it all up. Overall though, I've always been a believer of quality over quantity. I'd much prefer to spend time and money on one piece that's made from great material, and will last a lifetime.

How does music and fashion relate?

Almost all of my musical idols have also been fashion icons. Artists like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, MJ, Kanye and Pharrell, each have had a strong imprint in both the music and fashion worlds. I think that stems from the fact that one's personal style is a physical representation of their creativity. As musicians, we spend so much time creating a musical identity. A unique sound that says, "This is who I am," and "This is what I stand for." It only makes sense to me then, that artists would extend that identity to how they dress, speak, carry themselves, etc, whether that decision is conscious or subconscious.

How does fashion inspire you when you create?

I'm inspired by the imagination in fashion. I love how designers can exist at different points on the spectrum, from super-conventional clothing to wearable art, and everything in between. Or, how they feel free to mix styles, and incorporate pieces from different cultures. It's even inspiring to watch how a fashion house or label can develop over time, progressing and pushing boundaries, while maintaining their core identity. All of these things can relate to being a musician. I find that on some level, looking at how my favorite designers navigate through these decisions, reflect where I would like to exist with the music that I create.

Kris Bowers is definitely an artist to watch. Mark McNairy is genius for including this jazz-star in his show as he looked at ease and extremely dapper in the tailored looks. McNairy is the designer to watch if you are looking for original style and creative integrations. The artistic collaboration these two industry favorites produce will be sure to bring something new and fresh to both the fashion and music scene.

Unfortunately, the gorgeous location comes with a pretty hefty price tag of $50,000. But don't get discouraged just yet! Our friends at Wedding Paper Divas created an infographic that details just how much it costs to get married there and at 14 other famous landmarks around the world including the Eiffel Tower, Machu Picchu and the Great Wall of China. A Tale of Two Cities, from Lincoln Center Plaza to Rana Plaza

$
0
0
As New York Fashion Week recedes to a memory, it strikes me that there are two very different worlds of fashion. For most outsiders, New York Fashion Week epitomizes the fashion industry: celebrities, couture, runway shows, glossy magazines and after-parties where It-girls, designers, bloggers and editors rub shoulders.

But while the cameras were flashing, the garment district -- just 10 minutes south of New York's Lincoln Center -- is bustling with other realities.

The morning after, as many woke up with champagne-infused hangovers and thousands of 'likes' from last night's Instagram pics, I woke up to a disgruntled factory owner, a retailer asking for a chargeback and an endless flow of emails outlining all the problems in my current production. And the one bright spot, an order from a major retailer, but I see they'd countered all my prices to a point where I'd be selling every piece at a loss. It is just another day in the "glamorous" world of fashion. When I am asked whether Fashion Week is a busy time for me, I laugh. I am so far removed from that world, I might as well be sitting in Bangladesh.

At this level, the industry is struggling to remain relevant. Fast fashion, off-price retailers and a sluggish economy have changed the consumer's spending appetite. Many prominent brands have lost their caché, and the consolidation of department stores has led to fewer places for them to sell. Increased global costs and the media's scrutiny of compliance have put intense pressure on how these companies can manufacture.

There is a stark difference between what I do and what people perceive -- a vast misconception of what our industry actually does on a day-to-day basis. Rather than chasing trends, I'm chasing factory owners at 2 a.m. for my delayed goods shipments. And deciding what to manufacture is based more on sell-through data and margin requirements than on anything like style, trend or a designer's unique point of view. When it comes to colors, it's not just about what's hot, but is about understanding what colors work for each retailer. Manufacturing comes down to what different consumers in different parts of the world, the country, the city will buy, rather than what a designer envisions.

While the "fashion" industry is a trillion-dollar global business, very few of us get to create couture gowns for celebrities or travel to Milan to handpick the finest silks. Paris runways, have on the whole, been replaced by sweater factories in Bangladesh. A fashion house can easily spend upwards of $100,000 producing a 30-minute runaway show. But when it comes to making jeans, many times getting a buyer to sign off on a $6 jean is a challenge, much less getting a retailer to pay $1500 for a factory audit of compliance standards, or even less likely, getting a factory to pick up the cost when they fail to meet those standards.

Designers may attract the limelight, but major retailers and brands like Zara, H&M, PVH and Gap are the ones outfitting the masses. We think of Tom Ford and Diane von Furstenburg as icons, and people covet tickets to their fashion shows -- but it's the mass-market brands that have the buying power. Consider the department stores that are outlets for high fashion clothing. Neiman Marcus has 40 locations worldwide, including Bergdorf Goodman; Nordstrom has about 275 stores, but more than half of them are off-price. In contrast, TJX has more than 1,000 stores, Gap has more than 3,000, and Inditex -- the biggest fashion group in the world, with brands such as Zara, Massimo Dutti and Bershka -- operates a whopping 6,200 stores globally.

What does this say about what clothing people are buying -- and more importantly, what price they're willing to pay for it?

There's the fashion industry, and then there's the apparel and textile industry -- the group of people toiling away in garment districts across the world. What I do is not about not creating trends, styling the rich and famous, or winning awards for my design innovation. I am catering to the 99 percent and creating clothing for the masses. Doing so requires an entirely different set of skills and ambitions. I'll never be remembered as a great designer -- no one will wear my name. Although I manufacture millions of units of clothing a year, outfitting more people in a year than some renowned designers will in a lifetime, I am a trader, a merchant, and a businessman finding opportunity in a marketplace.

It's important to keep the vision, creativity, and yes, glamour of fashion alive, but the industry also needs to train the next generation of apparel executives. I imagine very few designers go to school with hopes and dreams of one day designing $19.99 denim. But the reality, good or bad, is that most of the jobs in this field are not in couture -- and many students would, in fact, be fortunate to work for a major retailer developing their collections. They'd find more stability and benefits, with the trade-off of turning in the big, sparkly gamble of designing for themselves -- "making it" as a name fashion brand -- in exchange for designing for the consumer.

The apparel industry needs the sartorialists, tastemakers and innovators. They set the trends, and while at times it may take seasons -- or even years -- to trickle down to the masses, fast fashion retailers and discounters really do take their cues from what's happening at their level. New York Fashion Week, for all its glitz and glamour, offers only a teensy sliver of the reality of the apparel industry. And no wonder this is the sliver everyone wants to see -- who wouldn't rather be partying in the plaza in front of Lincoln Center than sweating it out (or, as last spring, risking life and limb) in the manufacturing houses in Rana Plaza, Bangladesh?

Founder and Publisher of Sourcing Journal, a publication that focuses on the retail apparel and textile industry, Edward Hertzman is also a private label manufacturer and an apparel sourcing agent.

North West Sits Front Row For Balenciaga At Paris Fashion Week

There are so many milestones in a young child's life, and yet baby's first fashion show isn't often one of them.

Of course, most babies don't live the jet-set lifestyle like North West, who made her front row debut for the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday alongside her parents, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

The fashionable family dressed in all-black ensembles, save for the pop of color on the 1-year-old's tiny Yeezus tour t-shirt that she wore with a teeny leather skirt -- an outfit that may have been inspired by one of her father's past looks.

Dax Shepard Didn't Want A Wedding Band So He Got This Tattoo Instead

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell are so not your traditional celebrity couple. When the low-key twosome tied the knot last year at the Beverly Hills Courthouse, the whole thing cost them just $142.

So it's fitting that Shepard went the untraditional, non-flashy route when it came to his wedding band -- if you can even call it that. Instead of wearing a ring, the "This Is Where I Leave You" actor had a bell tattooed on his left ring finger in his wife's honor. And it's pretty adorable.

During an appearance on "Ellen" on Friday, Shepard discussed his decision to get inked in the name of love.

"I don't like wearing jewelry, but I felt obliged to warn all the men that I'm taken," he joked. "I thought a tattoo would be fitting. And her last name, conveniently, is an object I could tattoo."

In the middle of the tattoo, you can see the letters K (for Kristen), L (for their 18-month-old daughter Lincoln) and a D that we can only assume stands for Dax. Or, given that the couple is expecting their second child together, perhaps it's for baby number two.

Bell, on the other hand, does wear a ring -- and as you might expect, it's different and totally beautiful.

Guinter Kahn Dead At 80, Developer Of Baldness Remedy Rogaine

MIAMI (AP) — A South Florida dermatologist credited with helping develop the first baldness remedy recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has died. He was 80.

Dr. Guinter Kahn's daughter Michelle said her father died Sept. 17 at a Miami hospice. His health had been declining since a stroke eight years ago. Kahn's name was added to the patent for minoxidil in 1986 after a 15-year legal struggle with Upjohn Co. Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine.

Upjohn originally synthesized minoxidil to treat high blood pressure in the early 1960s. When Dr. Charles Chidsey — one of the company's consultants working at the University of Colorado's medical school — noticed the drug stimulated hair growth, Chidsey went to Kahn and his medical assistant, Dr. Paul Grant. Kahn was running the school's dermatology department at the time.

The Miami Herald (http://goo.gl/KZJqqt) reports that Kahn and Grant eventually developed a topical solution for minoxidil in 1971. The pair earned royalties, said to be 2 to 5 percent, from Upjohn's $200 million of wholesale annual revenues from Rogaine in the late 1980s.

While Kahn benefited financially from his discovery, he couldn't actually use it to treat his own baldness.

"He was allergic to it," his daughter told The Herald. "But he loved tinkering around, doing research."

Kahn was born May 11, 1934, to a German-Jewish family in Trier, Germany. He fled the Nazis with his family in 1938 and ended up in Omaha, Nebraska.

Kahn graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1958 and later completed a medical residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He maintained a private practice in North Miami Beach for more than 30 years.

His funeral was held in Nebraska last week, but his South Florida friends will be able to attend a memorial this weekend in Miami.

Besides his daughter Michelle, Kahn is survived by his longtime partner Judy Felsenstein, his son Bruce, his brother Marcel and grandchildren Nathan and Emma.

Skip The Flower Crown And Wear Roses The Dolce & Gabbana Way

Monica Bellucci, the face of Dolce & Gabbana's Classic Cream Lipstick, told me once in an interview: "The most beautiful roses I’ve ever received were from Domenico and Stefano. I don’t know how they found those roses -- they looked like velvet. Nobody else [has ever sent] me roses like that." The design duo obviously has serious connections, not only in fashion but in the flower world, as well. Behind the scenes at today's show there were buckets brimming with rich red roses and ruffled carnations to lend some Spanish flair to soft chignons. (Anyone who views a carnation purely as filler clearly hasn’t received a bouquet from D&G, as these blossoms weren’t even in the same stratosphere as baby’s breath.)

Not only did "The Cosby Show" introduce TV viewers to a fictional black family made up of professional, loving parents and their intelligent, witty children (sayonara stereotypes!), but it showcased the most memorable fashion trends from the '80s and '90s.

We can't recall many teen girls who didn't try to copy Denise Huxtable's bohemian flair or count the number of times our mothers walked out of the hair salon sporting a fabulous blowout à la Clair Huxtable. However, channeling Bill Cosby's quirky sweater style is something we're all still trying to perfect. Send any extra Koos Van Den Akker knitwear you've got lying around our way, Bill!

As "The Cosby Show" celebrates its 30th anniversary, we are taking a look back at cast photos of TV's best-dressed family. All the bold prints, baggy suits and big hair is making us want to go binge-watch our favorite episodes!
