Losing Weight Won't Make 2015 a Better Year

0
0
As 2014 comes to a close, we are forced to reflect upon who we are, what we've accomplished, and who we want to be. But before you write down your New Years resolutions, the ways that you will become who you want to be, remember this: Losing 15* pounds is not going to make you happy, and it will not make 2015 a better year.

When drafting up these resolutions, there are many things to consider. There are the voices of our well-intended family members, who we see during the holiday season. "Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?" "You look bigger." "Do you really need that piece of pie?" All of the questions and comments are pointed, but they are only meant to urge us towards "self-improvement." Once we have a significant other, once we eat less, once we are smaller, we will be better.

And then Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and a plethora of other weight-loss companies begin to shove their problematic messages down our throats: "Hey, you there! You eat food! You are fat! You must be unhappy. Pay us, and you will finally be happy when we help you lose weight!"

Everyone is promising us that if we are smaller, we will finally be happy. This year will be different, but only if we are thin.

Let me be frank: Losing weight is not going to make you eternally happy. Temporarily, your pants size may be smaller, but all of your problems will remain. Losing weight does not mean you will finally find the perfect partner, or that you will finally get that pay raise you deserve. How much you weigh has nothing to do with who are you. If you're an asshole, you're always going to be an asshole. In fact, if you follow through with this whole weight loss resolution, you are going to be a hungry asshole -- which is worse.

So let's save ourselves from the hunger and the disappointment that will be the only outcome of this unattainable, empty dream and focus on what is attainable and important-- who you want to be, regardless of your size. Smash your scale, and promise yourself that you're going to listen to more Shania Twain because she makes you happy. Save the money you would be using for a juice cleanse and actually invest in your future. Choose to accept yourself this year. Learning how to accept yourself, as you are, is a much more productive and sustainable resolution than attempting to lose 15 pounds every single year.

The bottom line is that there are more things to worry about than just your weight. Choose to improve yourself in real and sustainable ways, so that you can be physically and mentally available to those that are important around you. Look at the world around you, rather than just how you look.

*Whatever arbitrary number you think will make you a "better" version of yourself.

This isn't your average little black dress.

Khloe Kardashian has never been one to stray from a daring dress, and her outfit at 1 Oak nightclub in Las Vegas on Tuesday night was no exception to the rule. The 30-year-old worked her curves in a sequined black dress with a plunging neckline and a thigh-high slit as she played host for the evening:

Kardashian was kept company by her two close pals, Khadijah and Malika Haqq. Although her famous family was not in attendance, she found a creative way to make sure that Kim, Kylie, Kourtney, Kendall and Rob were all there in spirit:

Ashley Graham Is The Edit's Last (And Best) Cover Star Of 2014

It's been quite an exciting year for plus-size fashion, but one more major, exciting moment just snuck itself in before the end of 2014.

Ashley Graham, one of our favorite curvy girls, is The Edit's final cover star of the year. The model has long been an advocate for body positivity -- she, along with four other plus-size models started ALDA, a coalition which promotes self-acceptance to young women. So it's no surprise that in her powerful interview with the digital mag, Graham discusses self-love, confidence and how the conversation about body image is shifting for the better.

Graham says that her purpose in life is to help other women find body acceptance, and that it starts, of course, from within. "Our words have so much power," she told the mag, adding, "Every day, if you tell yourself ‘I love you’, if you give yourself one word of validation, it will change your mind. You might even start crying. I’ve done that before, especially in my weakest moments. And then you start to really figure out what the deeper issue is: is it your body, your job, your relationship?"

Even though the industry has a long way to go, programs like ALDA and the rise of plus-size models signal the beginning of a real shift. "Things are happening, it’s exciting. Now is the time: people want to know about curvy women. We are in the middle of a great conversation, and we still have years before we hit the peak, but this is the beginning of a great adventure that is going to go on and on, I really believe that. Curves are here to stay," she told the mag.

We couldn't agree more. Head to The Edit to see the entire interview.

It's 2015! New Year, New Trends in Home, Food, Fashion and Beauty

0
0
There is nothing like a fresh calendar year. A brand new 365 days. Aside of the excitement surrounding New Year's, rounding the corner to 2015 also brings a crop of new trends across life and style -- food, fashion, home and beauty. It kicks off with resort season as the holidays wind down and the last of celebrations take place, then goes full-course into spring and summer. It's no wonder this time of year is always exciting.

Home

For the home, the trend of style in everything -- every room, every corner, every element of the house -- has been around for a few seasons and shows no signs of slowing this year. With the growth of home furnishings available online and affordable retailers to meet a broader range of demographics, fulfilling this trend is easier and more personal than ever. Watch for color explosion in the kitchen this year -- black which has been popular for a few years will return, but even more so will be color across the spectrum particularly in cabinets. Pastels, primary colors, bright, bold, you name it.

Color has already crossed into small kitchen appliances, and while it has turned up with the larger items like refrigerators and dishwashers, far more commonly seen is the popularity of large appliances mirroring the cabinet experience. It creates a smooth, streamlined and synergistic feel. Outside of the kitchen, the same attention to color continues -- walls in particular continue to see the play. The sky is truly the limit, so get creative with yours. With furniture and other furnishings, the same is on trend. Bright or rich jewel blue tones are particularly showing up, but pinks, yellows, greens, oranges, etc. are also in the mix again this year for furnishings. New exciting home decor retailers like Serena & Lily and Lulu & Georgia carry great items, while H&M and Zara both now offer online home options that are really great and budget friendly.

Fashion and Style

For fashion and style, 2015 is showing some fresh ideas and concepts as well. Sky-high wedges and flat forms in footwear are appearing across many designer collections in resort and spring previews this year, and if the shoe isn't one or the other, the wide heel is definitely making an arrival in all forms and formats. After years of tight-fitting skinny jeans and pants, skirts, etc. everything's loosening up in apparel -- soft, flowing fabrics, volume, etc. particularly in coats and pants. In jewelry, architectural and big statement continues to trend. For color, understated hues are here. They'll start to knock out pastels and big, pop colors in everything from apparel to footwear and handbags.

Lace details, floral prints, bows, gems and other trimmings will continue to play a popular role in accessories of all kinds -- handbags, shoes and jewelry. From a styling standpoint, outfits will have a slightly retro and late '70s vibe. Activewear is exploding in popularity -- nearly every brand now offers a collection. Newcomer retailers like Style Runner are growing for their chic curated offerings, but you can find great stuff virtually everywhere now including Net-a-Porter and H&M.

Beauty

Beauty trends for the coming year are equally exciting. Black eyeliner was everywhere in runway shows and presentations, going beyond the traditional smokey and cat eye to all kinds of unique ideas and applications. With the eye making the stand, lip colors are corresponding accordingly. Nude tones and subtle colors are edging out bright reds, pinks and corals in this area. Matte foundation for spring and sun-kissed summer glow will provide the right base.

While the nails have been doing a lot of talking the past few years, nail art is starting to feel tired though don't expect detail on the digits to go anywhere just yet. For color, trends will likely follow the same route as the fashion hues -- muted tones, etc. A few new makeup favorites here include eyes, lips, face which boasts a great collection of affordable makeup items -- perfect for those who want to play with the year's makeup trends. The company is cruelty-free, which is also growing in popularity as mainstream beauty-lovers continue to buck unnecessary testing on animals.

Food

A new year of fresh ideas doesn't leave out the foodie. Coconut cream is everywhere at the moment -- in desserts, dinners, you name it. There's also a trend of doing interesting things with items like rice and quinoa -- particularly in desserts. Upstart companies in the food category are continuing to boom and grow in popularity. Justin's nut butters, Mighty Rice, Fork in the Road meats, and so many others. You can find them at stores like Whole Foods or online with a bit of search by item or ingredient.

Cider beer is the drink lately, particularly from upstart and artisan brands. Colorado is home to a bunch of really good creators of this trendy item, but you can find many other types and tastes across the spectrum. Tea is always a popular item -- ginger tea is the 'it' item of the moment here. It's got a bit of a kick yet packs great benefits to the body. In coffee, there's been a huge boom in new coffee makers. Stumptown, from Portland, is a popular player in this arena.

Gwyneth Paltrow Wonders Why Women Are So 'Vitriolic' To Each Other

0

Gwyneth Paltrow thinks women need to stop being so mean to each other.

Paltrow appears on the February 2015 cover of Harper's Bazaar UK. Inside the issue, she discusses her relationship with Chris Martin and paving her own way beyond her famous parents. While she says she has developed a sisterhood with her colleagues at Goop, she also acknowledges how badly women can treat each other.

"Women really need to examine why they’re so vitriolic to other women; why they want to twist words, why they want to read about someone else in a negative light and why that feels good to them ... But I also know a huge tribe of women who are loving and supportive of other women, in ways that are completely transformative," Paltrow says.

In October, Paltrow's feud with Martha Stewart made headlines and ended with the actress publishing a recipe for "Jailbird Cake" on her website. Many took this as a jab at Stewart, who went to jail in 2004 for insider trading.

The 42-year-old star tells Bazaar she has learned "the power of kindness and the importance of nonjudgemental ways of looking at others." She also defends a woman's right to be whoever she wants.

"I think we are a generation of women who are different in a lot of respects, and some of us want to be ambitious, and for it not to be a dirty word," she adds. "We want to be feminine and soft, we want to be maternal, we want to be sexual, we want to be explorers -- and we can be a combination of all of these archetypes. You can be powerful, but you can also be vulnerable."

A Hilarious Way To Cut Out All The Bad People In Your Life This New Year

0
0
If your New Year's resolution is to cut bad people out of your life, you'll probably need your BFF's help.

Creators and stars of the web series #HotMessMoves Ashley Skidmore and Lyle Friedman teamed up with Loft to create "#CleanSlate," a hilarious (yet honest) take on keeping New Year's resolutions. Although ridding ourselves of toxic relationships in 2015 might seem impossible, with the support of a best friend and a list of forbidden phone numbers to block we should all fare just fine.

From all the people who have let you down to the friend who only likes you when the conversation involves her -- it's time to let all of them go. See ya never, crappy people.

Oh, and if you happen to run into said crappy people on the street, just take a page out of Skidmore and Friedman's book:

It's Engagement Season! The 10 Best Celebrity Engagement Rings

0

By Christina Park, BRIDES

We spend a lot of time admiring everything about celebrity couples--their red carpet appearances, their outfits, their relationships, and their engagement rings, obviously. When it comes to bling, no one does it better than Hollywood's engaged A-listers. We can describe every detail of Kim Kardashian's 15-carat engagement ring from Kanye West, and we swoon over Blake Lively's pink and rose gold engagement ring from Ryan Reynolds, but there are so many more out there to ogle and admire.

With so many newly engaged celebrities, we reexamined our all-time favorite Hollywood engagement rings. Get comfortable with your mouth hanging open, because we guarantee these fabulous rings will inspire some serious envy -- not to mention your new favorite cut.

Here, our favorite celebrity engagement rings!

1. Jennifer Aniston's Engagement Ring
The former Friends star had a lot to say "yes" to when boyfriend Justin Theroux proposed with this whopper of a diamond in August 2012. (The roughly 8-carat emerald-cut solitaire ring cost an estimated $500,000!). She wears her mega-rock with pride -- and who can blame her?

2. Jamie Chung's Engagement Ring
Bryan Greenberg proposed to Jamie Chung with a gorgeous (and huge!) classic round-cut diamond engagement ring. The proposal, which came as a total surprise to Chung, happened during the 2013 holiday season in her hometown of San Francisco.

3. Elizabeth Hurley's Engagement Ring
Hurley's blue sapphire ring set between two trillion-cut diamonds is both a bold statement and a nod to British tradition--sapphires are a favorite of British royalty. The platinum engagement ring that cricket player Shane Warne gave to Hurley in 2011 is approximately 9 carats.

4. Halle Berry's Engagement Ring
Set in a textured, hand-forged, yellow-gold setting, the ring's four-carat emerald--sourced from Colombia--is flawless in color and flanked by two diamonds. Berry's fiancé Olivier Martinez, who proposed in 2012, commissioned the one-of-a-kind piece from his Paris neighbor, jeweler Robert Mazlo. The ring reportedly contains codes and symbols in lieu of an inscription, which only its wearer can understand.

5. Jessica Biel's Engagement Ring
Jessica Biel's December 2011 engagement ring from love Justin Timberlake features a slightly rounded square-cut diamond surrounded by two rows of smaller stones. Notable details include scrolling rope-style sides and the use of blackened platinum, which creates a unique, vintage effect.

6. Kim Kardashian's Engagement Ring
We went crazy for Kim Kardashian's May 2014 wedding to Kanye West, but we're still floored by her 15-carat engagement ring. West reportedly spent a cool $8 million to procure the eye-popping cushion-cut diamond ring (and 33rd birthday present!). The D flawless type 2A rock (which jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz described as a the "perfect cushion-cut diamond") is set in a pavé band so delicate, it looks as though the diamond is floating on air.

7. Ashlee Simpson's Engagement Ring
Ashlee Simpson gleefully announced in January 2014 her engagement news on her Twitter account with a photo of herself and fiancé Evan Ross with the caption, "My baby love and I are ENGAGED!!! Hallelujah Hawaii!!!!!" Yet we were more taken by the completely one-of-a-kind engagement ring she was wearing in the picture. Evan, the son of legendary singer Diana Ross, popped the question with this blinding Neil Lane diamond ring in a unique setting. He reportedly worked closely with the famed jewelry designer to create the unique bauble that seems to fit perfectly with Simpson's personality.

8. Jessica Simpson's Engagement Ring
For his new wife Jessica Simpson, Eric Johnson selected a nontraditional Neil Lane ring when he proposed in November 2010. The gem features a 5-carat ruby and two pear-shaped diamond side stones, which to us speaks of timeless elegance, rich with glam.

There are only a few more hours left in 2014, and Kendall Jenner is going out with a bang. The 19-year-old model and reality star is currently visiting Dubai with a star-studded group, including famous pals Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid and Shay Mitchell. In between sightseeing, Jenner found time to snap a selfie after slipping into a teeny brown bikini:

7 Tips for a Fabulous New Year's Eve

0
0
New Year's Eve holds a special place in my heart because I met my husband 12 years ago at midnight, and it was one of the greatest days of my life. In my single days, it was my mission to go to the most fabulous party because I was on the hunt for an extraordinary New Year's Eve. Since I've met my husband I'm happy just to spend time together whatever we decide to do. That being said, through the years, I believe that I've figured out the best formula for a surefire good time as the clock strikes midnight. These simple tips should help you achieve a happy new year!

1. Splurge on the good champagne. Listen, it's a special night and you probably don't drink champagne very often so why not splurge a little and get the good stuff! I'm not saying you have to go all Dom Perignon on me, just step it up a bit from the $12.99 Korbel. Trust me, you will enjoy your night so much more... and it will lessen the hangover.

2. Eat delicious hors d'oeuvres, and don't feel guilty about it. It's a holiday, which means all diets are off for the night. Hors d'oeuvres are my favorite kind of meal. You can have a little taste of so many different things and they're usually pretty decadent (read: delicious.) So treat yourself and have more than one or two. Try them all!

3. Download the Uber app. It's not very chic to get a DUI so skip the embarrassment (and a potentially worse situation) and take an Uber home at the end of the night.

4. Have hangover cures ready. My go-to's after a fun night of drinking are Excedrin Migraine and tons of coconut water, but do whatever works for you. Maybe it's a little hair of the dog? Maybe it's a greasy cheeseburger? Whatever it is, have it ready and easily accessible for New Year's Day. Trust me, you'll be happy you did.

5. Wear something sparkly. Load on the bling. You can't wear too much on New Year's Eve. Go nuts. Sparkle away my friend. I promise it will make you happy.

6. Avoid drama. This could be my number one rule for any night on the town, but especially New Year's Eve. If you're friend is going to start crying hysterically at 10 p.m. because she's not going to have someone to kiss at midnight -- nor someone to ever kiss again in her entire life -- maybe just for that night you may want to choose some other friends to hang out with. New Year's Eve is when our entire world celebrates our lil' blue planet making it through another year so save that drama for your mama and be happy.

7. Kiss someone at midnight. I'm not necessarily talking about a wet sloppy kiss here, I'm just sayin'... whether it's your boyfriend, your best friend or your baby, make sure you're feeling the love at midnight. It will start your 2015 off right!

Frankel is taking a break from filming her big return on the new season of "Real Housewives of New York City."

"I'm genuinely excited, with a side of slightly nervous, for my return to 'The Real Housewives of New York City,'" Frankel said in the statement. "Bravo has always been the place on television where I have the freedom to be unfiltered, honest and inappropriate, with an audience who has been with me from the beginning. What was the inspiration for the 6 Shore Road Resort 2015 collection?

My collection was inspired by Nepal.

What hues and fabrics did you use in your Resort 2015 collection?

I used lots of orange and red hues and floral prints, as well as soft jersey and cotton fabrics.

What are your favorite looks in your Resort 2015 collection?

My favorite look in the collection was my opening runway look, which was a floral one-piece swimsuit with side cutouts.

I also loved our finale look, which was a stunning neon embroidered Tigress Kaftan accessorized with silver hardware, worn by Natalie Suarez, model/super blogger of Natalie Off Duty.

What's next for your brand?

We are adding towels and are looking to expand into a few categories making 6 Shore Road more of a lifestyle brand.

It's Normal To Be Terrible At Keeping New Year's Resolutions

By Max Ufberg

Last New Year’s Eve, I said I was going to start running more. Twice a week, to be exact. Now, 12 months and 12 jogs later—four or five of which came within the first few weeks of 2014—it’s safe to add this last New Year’s pledge to my tally of failed celebratory resolutions.

That inability to follow through on New Year’s resolutions is pretty typical of Americans, according to one 2014 poll by the University of Scranton psychology department. Based on their results, it seems that while a good majority of people—71 percent, to be exact—hold to these annual promises for the first two weeks, six months later, less than 50 percent of those surveyed actually upheld the resolutions.

Why do we break these promises? And what strategies might help us to be more successful? For answers, we can look back to one decades-old report, published again by the University of Scranton, in 1989. (No word yet on how Scranton tackled the market on New Year’s resolutions.) Under professor John Norcross, researchers tracked the self-change efforts of 213 ambitious New Year’s resolution-makers—ranging from 16 to 75 in age—over a two-year period. To do so, Norcross simply polled the individuals on their resolutions, and tracked progress intermittently through self-reported evaluations.

Similar to the updated 2014 survey, Norcross found that over three-quarters of the testers kept their pledges … for the first week. Those rates steadily went down; two years later, only 19 percent kept the resolution. Also of note: Gender and age bore no significance on the success rates. Mostly, those who failed to follow through on their resolution fell into self-blame and wishful thinking (i.e. wanting the resolution to just “go away”).

What can we learn from those who were successful in their New Year’s resolutions? Alongside the obvious self-reported resolution strategies like willpower and stimulus control, the “fading” tactic—gradual reduction of a vice, as opposed to the “cold turkey” method—and counter-conditioning proved to be the most effective ways of keeping one’s New Year’s plans, say, to lose weight.

And it’s not like these successful testers went all Superman on their plans either; 53 percent of the successful group experienced at least one slip, with each member committing 14 total slips on average over that two-year span. That’s really encouraging for someone like me, because it means that, even if I falter with my running routine, I can take solace in the fact that my peers who do keep on running might slip up as well. How’s that for camaraderie?

Modern Westerners aren’t the first to make New Year’s resolutions—the Babylonians, Romans, and Medieval knights all made vows when the ball dropped too. While we don’t know our forebears’ success rates, if they were anything like us, we can assume there was a good amount of the “I’ll start tomorrow” philosophy. And if that’s the case, at least we’re not alone in our failures.

14 Best 'Friends' Episodes To Binge Watch Right Now

0
0
"Friends" is on Netflix right now, just in time for your one weirdo friend to be like, "I've never seen 'Friends'! I'll binge watch it!" (She's such a Phoebe.) In an attempt to tackle all 236 episodes, here's a list of the ones that you (and your Phoebe friend) absolutely, no-questions-asked must watch right away. We've got the one where Joey puts his head inside a turkey, the one where Ross yells "PIVOT" a lot and the one with the lobsters.

1. Season 4, Episode 12: "The One With The Embryos"

Best line: "Actually, it's Miss Chanandler Bong."

Why watch it? What starts as a friendly bet ends in an apartment switcheroo and the revelation that nobody knows what Chandler actually does for work. (He's not a "transponster," for the record.)

2. Season 3, Episode 2: "The One Where No One's Ready"
friends gifs
Best line: "Look at me, I'm Chandler, could I be wearing any more clothes?"

Why watch it? Couch cushions make great hostages.

3. Season 5, Episode 14: "The One Where Everyone Finds Out"

Best line: "They don't know we know they know we know. "

Why watch it? Phoebe and Chandler try to force sexual chemistry in an attempt to disprove that Monica and Chandler are actually seeing each other. It's gooey and romantic and slapstick-y all at once.

4. Season 5, Episode 9: "The One With Ross' Sandwich"
the one with ross sandwich
Best line: "MY SANDWICH?!"

Why watch it? Ross' life falls apart and we're so down to watch that happen.

5. Season 4, Episode 23/24: "The One With Ross' Wedding"
the one with ross wedding friends
Best line: "I Ross ... take thee, Rachel."

Why watch it? What seemed like the most random hook up became the show's most endearing couple. Too bad these episodes also took out Emily's dignity.

6. Season 5, Episode 8: "The One With All The Thanksgivings"
friends gifs
Best line: "Here, Monica, you can finish off these pies. There was no room in the fridge."

Why watch it? Everyone's had crappy holidays but 1988 Geller family Thanksgiving takes the cake when we find out Monica accidentally chopped off one of Chandler's toes.

7. Season 2, Episode 7: "The One Where Ross Finds Out"
the one where ross finds out
Best line: "You're over me? When were you ... under me?"

Why watch it? Locked coffee shops have never been so sexy.

8. Season 2, Episode 14: "The One With The Prom Video"
friends
Best line: "He's her lobster!"

Why watch it? Big kisses, new catchphrases, pre-nose job Rachel Green and home videos from the '80s. Yes please.

9. Season 7, Episode 23/24: "The One With Monica and Chandler's Wedding"
monica chandler wedding
Best line: "Monica, I though this was going to be the most difficult thing I ever had to do. But when I saw you walking down that aisle, I realized how simple it was. I love you. And surprises that come our way, it's ok, because I will always love you. You are the person I was meant to spend the rest of my life with."

Why watch it? Uh, did you read those vows?

10. Season 6, Episode 9: "The One Where Ross Got High"
the one where ross got high
Best line:"Rachel, no, you weren't supposed to put beef in the trifle. It did not taste good."

Why watch it? Lady fingers do not belong with beef.

11. Season 6, Episode 15/16: "The One That Could Have Been"
friends gifs
Best line: "I thought a heart attack was nature's way of telling you to die."

Why watch it? Rachel's unhappily married to Barry, Phoebe is a high-rolling investment banker, Joey is wildly successful, Monica dates Dr. Boring, Chandler is a failed funny man and Ross is still in his sexless marriage to Carol. Even when things are so wrong, they feel so right.

12. Season 1, Episode 7: "The One With The Blackout"
jill goodacre friends
Best line: "I'm trapped in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre!"

Why watch it? We meet Paolo and a vicious cat, find out the weirdest places the gang has had sex and the golden rule: always accept gum from a Victoria's Secret model.

13. Season 5, Episode 16: "The One With The Cop"

Best line: "PIVOT!"

Why watch it? PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!

14. Season 5, Episode 11: "The One With All The Resolutions"

Best line: "Someone comment on the pants!"

Why watch it? Chandler's New Year's resolution to not make fun of his friends doesn't last very long when Ross gets leather pants as part of his resolution to do something he hasn't done before every single day. Nobody wins.

21 Things To Stop Giving A Shit About In 2015

As we enter a new year, there are many things to keep in mind: mantras to live by, resolutions to make, new goals to set. But January is also a great time to take stock of the things we're wasting time, energy and stress on, and to, in the oft-quoted words of Elsa from "Frozen": "Let it go."

Below are 21 things we are going to stop giving a shit about in 2015. What would you add?

1. Juice cleanses. Let's call a spade a spade and acknowledge that cleansing is less about health than about quick weight loss -- and if that's really your goal, there are healthier, longer-lasting ways to go about it. Solid foods FTW.

2. Wearing matching socks. One day we may find the land of lost single socks. But today is not that day.

3. Making plans with people you don't actually want to see, to do things you don't want to do. Obligation relationships aren't good for anyone. And even if someone you adore is inviting you out, if you'd rather eat your own hand than go clubbing, it's probably best to just say no.

4. People who don't understand why Queen Bey's feminism is important. Bye, haters.

5. Worrying about finding "the one." More doing fun things, less stressing about one's single status.

6. Breaking the Internet. If it ain't broke, why break it?

7. Getting tons of "likes" on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. Better to 'gram your avocado toast and sunsets for your own enjoyment, "likes" be damned.

8. Anything "Princeton Mom" says. Single ladies don't need her brand of "straight talk." Neither do rape survivors, or any other women, for that matter.

9. FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). We'd rather focus on truly enjoying the things we are doing.

10. Being embarrassed about wearing yoga pants in public. Look, they're comfy.

11. Losing that last five pounds. So many things taste better than skinny feels.

12. Wearing shoes that aren't comfortable. Hobbling around in pain makes any experience about 100x less pleasant.

13. Worrying that a romantic relationship doesn't check all the boxes on every "179,000 Ways To Know You're In The Right Relationship" list on the Internet.

14. Feeling guilty about going to bed early. True love means never having to apologize for your REM cycles.

15. Feeling guilty about staying in bed late on a weekend day. Clearly, we just really love sleep.

16. Not "putting yourself out there" in ways that your (well-meaning) friends and family think you should be. If there's something truly worth "getting out" for, you'll be motivated.

17. Eating gluten-free. Unless, of course, you are actually allergic to gluten.

18. Planning something *~#epic~* for every birthday. Embrace simplicity. Day drinking at a bar or BBQing at a park can be just as fun (if not more fun) than having an expensive 28-person dinner followed by five other complicated activities.

19. Walking more Fitbit steps each day than your Fitbit "friends." Exercise is wonderful for your physical and mental health. We'd rather use that as the motivation than competing with or "beating" our friends.

20. People who don't give a shit about you. Again... bye, haters.

21. Trying to make everyone happy all of the time. Do what you can, and forgive yourself the rest. And perhaps take some time to focus on making yourself happy.

Happy 2015, y'all!

Last night was the best night ever. You got to wear your new slinky dress, you danced, you drank champagne, and had a merry time with friends. Cut to: this morning. After a night of drinking, #IWokeUpLikeThis is less fresh-faced-and-glowy, and more smeared-eyeliner-and-puffy-face.

7 Skin Savers That Aren't Vaseline

Every winter we always hear about a magical product that seems to be the key to everyone's dry skin -- and no, it isn't coconut oil. At this point, you already know what we're talking about, but we might as well name it: Vaseline.

From head to toe, the petroleum-based formula helps our skin recover from cracked heels, harsh winds and excessive nose blowing. Yet as wonderfully useful as it is, Vaseline isn't the only magical balm out there.

So, if you're sick of that huge tub of clear gunk, or you just want to try something new, here are some products that you should introduce to your moisturizing routine. And don't worry, your head, shoulders, knees and toes will still survive through the season.

Breaking Down Basic

This article was written by teen reporters from The Mash, a weekly publication distributed to Chicagoland high schools.

By Gracie Sands, Glenbrook South and Bronson Roseboro, Morgan Park High

Not long ago, the term “basic” meant fundamental or essential. But lately the word has taken on an entirely different meaning for today’s younger generation. “Basic” now refers to a person who blindly follows current trends without thinking for themselves. And as the term gains traction with teens, whether in conversation or on social media, it has become a label that everyone wants to avoid.

“Someone who is basic has no type of unique qualities or features,” said Wells Community Academy junior Debbin Flores. “They blend with the crowd and go with the trends. Basically, they’re very mainstream people.”

When asked about the meaning of the word, adults are sometimes unaware of the evolution of “basic.” Susan D. Blum, an anthropology professor at the University of Notre Dame, hadn’t heard of the phenomenon prior to an explanation from her 24-year-old daughter. Blum said the meaning may be new but the concept is not—a word’s connotation changing over time is how we develop modernized language.

“Like a lot of other slang, this is a new usage of an old term—self-consciously different from mainstream meanings—kind of the way a term like ‘cool’ or ‘hot’ became used to describe something other than temperature,” Blum said.

Recently, “basic” found its way onto different social media platforms such as Twitter, Vine, Instagram and Facebook as an easy way to poke fun at someone. Loyola Academy junior Christina Reed said she often sees the word on Twitter and categorizes it as a gender stereotype.

“There are a lot of parody accounts that are constantly making fun of ‘basic b*****s,’ or basic girls who follow the norm,” Reed said. “It seems like a gender stereotype meant to insult teenage girls.”

Others agree with the assessment that the word is being used to target women in particular. Niles North sophomore Geoffrey Schmelzer said he doesn’t like the role “basic” is taking on.

“I do often see the word in social media, as it is often used in sexist ways to describe females,” Schmelzer said.

The word has also taken on racial implications, such as “basic white girl.” In fact, the usage has become so common that it has evolved into a full-fledged stereotype. Characteristics of “basic white girls” include taking selfies, drinking Starbucks coffee and wearing Ugg boots or North Face jackets. This is an example of a more derogatory mutation of the word.

“(This) has to do with someone being somewhat privileged and mainstream—the kind of young woman who drinks pumpkin spice lattes,” Blum explained.

The trouble with “basic” is that it can double as a hurtful judgment. The “basic girl” may go to yoga often, watch all the trendy shows and listen to the newest singers, but is that bad? Is it worth an insult?

Like most slang, some teens have come full circle with “basic,” embracing the word as a compliment.

Dr. Rita Hawkins-Williams, a social emotional counselor at Morgan Park, said that students shouldn’t aspire to be “basic” because it implies that there’s nothing extraordinary about them.

“We do not want our up-and-coming generation to only set their goals at the very bottom,” Hawkins-Williams said. “We do not want to encourage accepting only the requirement and not going above and beyond. Basic does not make you different from the rest, therefore you are blending in and can easily be overlooked. It is imperative to go beyond basic, stand out in the crowd and achieve excellence.”

A lot of teens are acknowledging Hawkins-Williams’ point. Jones junior Lin Mei said that by definition, no one can really be basic.

“I believe everyone is different in their own weird way, and that difference keeps us from being basic,” Mei said. “A basic person would be a normal person who shows indifference to everyday life, but everyone cares about something.”

Though someone labeled “basic” may do certain things, act a certain way or embody a certain status quo, it shouldn’t limit their ambitions. The new meaning of “basic” may have been coined to insult others, but the term can be repurposed to encourage freely expressing who you are and openly denouncing what’s accepted as the norm.

Regardless of the negative connotations, it seems both adults and teens are ready to change the “basic” mindset.
