Joni Mitchell Is The Star Of Saint Laurent's 'Music Project' And We're Freaking Out Over It

In case Céline's Spring 2015 ad featuring Joan Didion wasn't iconic or exciting enough for you, Saint Laurent's news, while a bit more ambiguous, might just put you over the edge.

The label has tapped none other than legendary singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell to be the next star of its Music Project. Previous participants in the project include the likes of Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, but at a time (and more specifically) a week where unconventional models are being chosen to pose for some of the most major labels, choosing the 71-year-old legend proves more than ever that models are not confined to certain ages or careers.

According to Saint Laurent's Twitter account, Mitchell was photographed in her California home in a full YSL look including a leather cape made for her by creative director Hedi Slimane. The fashion house also noted that additional images are set to be released in this month's V Magazine.

We can't wait to learn more about this project, but for now we will rejoice in viewing the images. Well done, Saint Laurent.

INFOGRAPHIC: Get the Best Beauty Sleep Ever

We all know how important it is to get a good night's sleep. Not only do you have more energy when you wake up, but sleeping well can have such a beneficial impact on your beauty -- after all, they do call it beauty sleep. But sleeping well doesn't just mean clock in the hours (although, that's important too!).

The folks at Health Perch have put together a little infographic that shows not only how many hours you should sleep to keep your skin looking amazing, but also how you should sleep and what time you should go to bed. It's actually pretty interesting considering we don't usually take our sleeping position into much consideration, but clearly we should.

Sleeping on your back, with your face up, is the best way according to the infographic, because it helps to keep wrinkles at bay. It's also important to sleep with your hair pulled back so excess oil doesn't land on your skin during the night.

sleeping tips

There are of course a few other things you should do to make sure your skin stays as it's best. Try applying a great moisturizer to your face before you go to sleep (our favorite is Clinique's Moister Surge). We also like to dab on some Carmex before we slumber to keep our lips from getting chapped (especially in the cold weather!). Ah, and last, but not least, don't forget your socks! Yep, wearing socks while you sleep will help lock in moisture to prevent cracking.

John Varvatos Taps Ziggy Marley And Stephen Marley For Spring 2015 Campaign (PHOTOS)

Move over models -- the most unlikely stars are snagging fashion campaigns left and right.

First, we squealed with joy after seeing Joan Didion's ad for Céline and our jaws dropped when Saint Laurent chose Joni Mitchell to front its latest "Music Project". Now, John Varvatos is mixing things up for his Spring 2015 campaign by snagging Ziggy Marley and Stephen Marley.

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS

Bob Marley's two eldest sons, who are successful reggae musicians/songwriters/producers in their own right, have found themselves in the fashion spotlight. The brothers got suited up in a few sleek looks for the project, which was captured by renowned rock-and-roll photographer Danny Clinch, including a black crocodile jacquard tuxedo and black linen Henley shirt.

“Our father would be proud to see us dressed up and coming together for this," Stephen told WWD. And the family bonding moment isn't lost on Ziggy either.

"It’s always better when I’m able to do projects with my younger brother," Ziggy said. "I don’t dress up very often, but when I do, I wear John Varvatos."

Check out a few of the campaign images below and look out for a documentary-style short film with the brothers that's set to debut on johnvarvatos.com on February 5, which is a day before what would have been Bob Marley's 70th birthday.

Kim Kardashian Wears Plunging Dress And Sandals For John Legend's NYC Birthday Party

Kim Kardashian might not have any feeling left in her toes after last night.

On Monday, Kardashian tweeted: "Up all night redoing my whole wardrobe with Kanye ... I'm so ready for new looks for the New Year! New 2015 vision." That revamped wardrobe was on display Thursday when the two attended John Legend's birthday party at Catch in New York City's Meatpacking District.

Despite the fact that temperatures hit a high of just 21 degrees and a low of 8 (thanks to an "arctic blast"), Kardashian opted for an open plunging gown by Pierre Balmain and sandals by West with only a blazer for the frigid evening.

Alexis Bittar Taps Iris Apfel And Tavi Gevinson For Spring 2015 Campaign, Our Minds Are Blown

With Joan Didion, Joni Mitchell and two of Bob Marley's sons already fronting major fashion campaigns this spring, we can hardly keep up with all these major sartorial moments. And now thanks to Alexis Bittar the slayage continues.

The renowned jewelry designer has tapped fashion icon Iris Apfel and fashion blogger/editor prodigy-turned-actress Tavi Gevinson for his Spring 2015 campaign.

alexis bittar campaign

Both ladies look absolutely amazing while decked out in dazzling Bittar baubles for the images shot by Terry Tsiolis and styled by Arianne Phillips. And let's not forget that Apfel is a ripe, yet ravishing, 93 years old. For her and Gevinson, 19, to be tapped for the same campaign is both surprising and brilliant -- proving that Bittar's eye-catching deigns are not only timeless, but also ageless.

This kind of conversation-starting imagery isn't new for Bittar who has consistently pushed the envelope when it comes to his campaigns in an effort to debunk standards of beauty and agism.

“In terms of the fashion industry, we’re selling to women who are predominantly over 35, but we’re showing them images of girls who are 19 and retouched,” Bittar told WWD. “For the campaign, we honed in on the essence of strong women who haven’t conformed. Tavi is so strong and so bright. Iris is kind of like a mother to me at this point and was probably a little bit annoyed that I never asked her to be in an ad [before].”

How To Make The Best Cup Of Coffee Possible, And The Best Time Of Day To Drink It

$
0
0
Coffee -- it can prevent disease, help our livers, make us more intelligent AND and most importantly --enable us to talk to other human beings in the morning after getting out of bed. But if coffee really is the best part of waking up, then we'd better make sure we know all the tricks to making the best cup of miracle brew ever.

After interviewing the experts and researching everything from the type of water you should use to the type of coffee-brewing mechanism you should buy, here are five must-know tips to making a good cup of coffee (and when you should drink it):

1. Clean your coffee pot.
It turns out your coffee pot is way grosser than you think. According to public health protectors NSF International, not only is it more likely to have a higher germ count than your bathroom door handle and toilet seat, the coffee pot could also have coliform bacteria. Make sure to clean it with white vinegar and warm water at least once a week.

2. Store your coffee correctly.
Avoid storing coffee in the fridge or freezer where coffee can dry out, and definitely don't keep it near an air conditioner or heater. Greg Lorance, Cumberland Farm’s In-House Coffee Expert, also reminded us that coffee can go stale in an instant. "Once you grind [coffee beans] and expose the coffee to oxygen, you’ve got five minutes before it goes stale." Lorance says his solution is to brew right away or seal in an air-tight container ASAP.

3. Use filtered water.
"Coffee is 99 percent water. If you use poor quality water, you’ll make a poor quality cup of coffee," says Lorance. The National Coffee Association recommends using filtered or (gasp!) bottled water, and staying away from "distilled or softened water."

4. Buy a Chemex.
When HuffPost Taste tried out nine different methods of brewing coffee, the Chemex took home top honors. This uniquely-shaped coffeepot is perfect for pour-overs and serious coffee drinkers alike.

5. Finish your coffee early.
That's right -- no afternoon brew for you! Research has shown that you should finish your coffee by 11 a.m. to ensure that you don't have any caffeine in your system before bed time.

Paris Hilton Named Her Dog After Herself, Because Why Not?

There is a movement in the entertainment industry to convince you that the rich and famous are "just like us." Paris Hilton is not like you, or anyone you know. Paris Hilton shares the same genetic makeup as you -- that is true -- but that's where the comparisons end.

You see, Paris Hilton is a woman who reportedly just dropped $25,000 on two Pomeranian puppies, and previously spent $13,000 on similar white fur ball in September. And while Hilton gave one of the two new puppies to her mother, Kathy Hilton, as a 35th wedding anniversary gift, she kept the other and named it after herself, naturally.

The 33-year-old reality star-turned-DJ posted a photo of the tiny pup on Jan. 6 and asked her Instagram followers what name she should bestow upon it.

On Thursday, Hilton showed up to a pre-Golden Globes event in West Hollywood with the adorable fluffy marshmallow masquerading as a puppy in hand and revealed to the Daily Mail that her newest pet shall henceforth be known as "Princess Paris Jr."

Princess Paris Jr. will join Hilton's other Pomeranian, Prince Hilton, among the growing zoo of animals she keeps as pets in her home.

Miranda Kerr has posed topless yet again.

The 31-year-old supermodel disrobed for embattled photographer Terry Richardson for the February 2015 cover of Harper's Bazaar, and if it seems like it's the millionth time Kerr has posed in a state of undress this decade, there's a good reason: she just loves being naked.

"I love taking my shoes off and being in the grass. Or sunbaking naked," she told the magazine, adding she'd do it more if not for constant attention from the paparazzi. "I wish I could go skinny-dipping in the ocean. If I didn't have to worry about anyone taking my picture, I'd totally be out there. I quite like to be naked."

'Instant Arches,' Shoe Inserts And More Ways To Get Foot Relief

We're making New Year's resolutions left and right, it seems, but one we really want to concentrate on this year is to take better care of our feet.

After all, as Bette Midler once famously said, "Give a girl the correct footwear and she can conquer the world." But with our vow in mind, we're amending these words to, "give a girl the right shoe inserts and she'll turn any street into a runway."

Our fearless leader Arianna Huffington has been pretty persuasive at convincing us to swap our stilettos for more sensible flats, but we still face discomfort no matter the shoe height. In effort to walk proudly and without pain, we've found seven foot relief products to save our soles and arches.

Women Talk About Penises, Hilarity Ensues

If you didn't pay attention in 7th grade sex ed, clearly you're not alone.

In a new BuzzFeed video six (cisgender) women sat down with a model of the male reproductive system and discussed the mystery that is the penis. Most of the ladies made up for their lack of knowledge with some good-hearted humor.

The women touch on five topics including wet dreams, the prostate, the difference between sperm and semen, and the phenomenon of blue balls. When it came to circumcision, the women were generally more knowledgable. "It's for hygiene purposes as well as to form a covenant with God," comedian Allison Raskin said. Others were not so well-informed: "You cut something off... the dick," another woman said.

So, to summarize what we learned about the penis today: "Sometimes pee comes out of it."

Eddie Redmayne Feels Bad For Prince William And The Reason Is Hilarious

Oh, Eddie Redmayne. Not only are you one of the most dapper dudes in Hollywood, you are also, apparently, very nice.

The "Theory Of Everything" star chatted with Glamour Magazine for its February issue (which hits newsstands Jan. 13) and arguably the best, most adorable part of the whole interview has to do with Prince William.

Redmayne was asked to recall his days at Eton College, which he attended with, you guessed it, Prince William. The two played on the same rugby team, and while the 33-year-old calls the Duke of Cambridge "a wonderful man," there was at least one downside to being the prince at that time. "I always felt slightly sorry for him because everyone wanted to tackle the future king of England. He took all the hits," Redmayne said.

We have a feeling between being married to Kate Middleton and you know, being the future King of England, he's gotten over it. Still, we must commend Redmayne for his empathy.

Tech Entrepreneur Tristan Walker Wants To Solve Health And Beauty Issues For Minorities

When it comes to men’s grooming, there's usually a lot of trial and error involved as guys search for the right routine to complement their individual lifestyles. In fact, tech entrepreneur Tristan Walker -- admired in Silicon Valley for his success as head of business development at Foursquare -- was so frustrated with the quality of over-the-counter razor blades, which constantly left him with razor bumps, that he stopped shaving altogether for 15 years. That's all part of what led him, in December 2013, to launch his very own line of shaving products called Bevel.

The products are aimed at "men with coarse and curly hair," according to the website of Walker & Company, Walker's start-up health- and beauty-products business, of which Bevel is the flagship brand. The line includes a special brush as well as razors and lotions, all of them aimed at the kind of skin-irritation problems that are especially common among black men.

In the year since its launch, Bevel has attracted investors as diverse as Hollywood mogul Charles King, hip-hop veteran Nas and the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

During a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Walker, a Stanford University Graduate School of Business alum and a native of Queens, New York, opened up on developing Bevel, as well as his long-term plan to expand his company and reach underserved minority customers.

From a technical perspective, how did you go about developing Bevel?

We collaborated with a great manufacturing partner, and we went through six, seven different iterations for the formulations of each of the products. We also got the needed advice of some dermatologists around how we can actually make some proprietary formula for not only our priming oil, but our shaving cream and our restoring balm. And after that sixth, seventh time, it just worked. We felt we kind of had the ideal solution for folks. In addition to that, we worked with a great industrial design firm on the design of our blades and our brush.

How do you plan to change the mindset of the consumer who prefers the services of a barber instead of shaving?

Barbers don’t really go out and try to educate [people on shaving and grooming], which is a bit of why we’re here. I think with our ability, we have our online platform that allows us to reach a lot of people very quickly. In addition to the Bevel site, we also have a portal called Bevel Code, and it’s the first digital magazine that focuses on style and grooming for men of color. And we’ve started that because I would go online and I couldn’t find out what kind of moisturizer to use for my skin. I couldn’t find it in GQ, I couldn’t find it in Esquire, anywhere. So we have content like that. In addition to that, we do these in-depth, one-on-one interviews with style and grooming influencers about their style and grooming habits ... So we have a few ways to help educate folks who either might be skeptical or just don’t know what’s the solution. But at the same time, we’re in it for the long haul.

One thing I tell people is that we’re not here to displace the barbershop. You go to the barbershop one day a week -- let’s say Saturday. Let us take care of you Sunday through Friday. And I think that is meaningful. We’re about collaborating with them.

In your opinion, what’s the importance of owning and operating a black business within the hair-care industry?

I’m 30 years old, and when I reflect back on my life, I’ve never had a company that I was proud to support. There’s a lot of companies with products that I love, but [that I'm] not necessarily proud to support. And I feel like that wasn’t the case when my mom and grandmother were coming up with SoftSheen and that sort of thing. And it’s like, for our generation we can actually build one of the first companies that inspires that pride in our community. So for me it’s important, for that reason.

Number two, it’s a shame we’re being neglected as consumers, given our cultural influence, our spending power. So we want to inspire that pride -- not only in the products we make, but the design of them, the educational experience and the service offering we provide. And what this allows me to do is, when you get our box, you get a handwritten note from me with my name and email address on it, because I want my customers to really understand where that accountability lies. It’s with me.

Last October, Carol’s Daughter went from being an independent black-owned company to being acquired by L’Oréal. Would you ever consider a buyout from another company?

My intention for the company is, I want to build something with as much legacy as a Procter & Gamble or a Johnson & Johnson. That’s the ambition. If someone was to come and say “We’ll pay a trillion dollars for your business,” it would be naïve of me, for the sake of my employees, to not consider that. [laughs] But at the end of the day, we’re very much into this for the long haul, because again, we want to build a lasting company that inspires that pride. All too often, you kind of think about a lot of these companies that existed before us -- they get sold to a larger company. And as a result of it, the brand starts to lose sight of its authenticity. And I want to make sure we don’t do that.

In five to 10 years, where do you envision Walker & Company brands and Bevel in the marketplace?

I think five to 10 years out, we’re probably going to have a slew of brands separate from Bevel. And every brand will focus on an acute health and beauty problem that exists for people of color -- but also problems that everyone has. If you think about the razor bump problem, it’s a problem that up to 70 percent of black men and women have. But 30 percent of everyone else [has it]. It’s a very big problem.

If you think about things like vitamin D deficiency, if you think about natural hair transitioning, if you think about problems as profound as miscarriages -- how do you focus on problems that people of color over-index on, but that everyone has? So we’re going to develop a suite of brands to solve those problems. And we’re going to do that, over and over again with great design, great education, products that work and a service experience that’s second to none.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Gillette #UseYourAnd Ad Tells Women To Move Beyond Labels (But Still Shave Their Legs)

$

"You are warmth and wisdom. And grace and guts. No 'ifs' or 'buts,' just 'ands.'"

That is the message behind Gillette Venus' #UseYourAnd campaign. The spot features a diverse group of young women playing sports, reading, laughing and playing music, while another young woman performs spoken word, encouraging women everywhere to break free from the boxes they have been placed in.

"One dimensional labels limit your potential," reads the text at the end of the minute and a half video. "Venus invites women everywhere to #UseYourAnd."

The message behind the campaign is an important one: Women (and men) should work to break down gender-based barriers. After all, it's those stereotypes and labels that encourage a society where women are paid less than men for doing the same work, where women's value is often reduced to their looks, where boys are told to "be a man" no matter the cost and where college sexual assault is a true epidemic.

Yes, labels hurt and limit women. But Gillette loses us a little bit when considering that the spot is ultimately promoting a razor. It's basically saying, Hey ladies! Ditch all those demeaning and limiting labels -- except that body hair stuff. Definitely shave your legs, armpits and any other area of the body deemed necessary by the powers that be.

We appreciate the pseudo-feminist effort, but we'd prefer to #UseOurAnd to lose the one-dimensonal labels AND the faux-empowering aspects of the beauty industry.

Seventeen-year-old celebrity journalist Pavlina Osta is a marathoner, but not in the run-a-million-miles-and-get-sweaty way. Pavlina's an interview marathoner -- and last November, she made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for giving the most interviews ever in a 24-hour period.

Pavlina, who is also a blogger here at HuffPost Teen, joined the Guinness ranks after she interviewed 347 people, according to HelloGiggles.

Pavlina asked each interview subject five questions, which based on our calculations, makes for 1,735 questions. She also didn't repeat a single one.

In a statement to press, Pavlina said, "It was an amazing 24 hours of adrenaline and I was determined to make it happen, and so excited that I did it."

For Pavlina, the achievement wasn't just about her. She added:

This was a world wide statement for women in media, particularly women in radio -- we are out here throughout the airwaves making things happen! There's a new generation of women in media and I'm very proud to be part of it!

In addition to setting world records like it ain't no thang, Pavlina also published a book on Kindle last November called "Talk to Me: The Road Trips of a Teenage Celebrity Radio Host." This '4D-Printed' Dress Just Became Part Of The Museum Of Modern Art's Collection

The Kinematics dress, created by generative design studio Nervous System, is, in all cliches, not your average piece of fabric. For starters, the Museum of Modern Art recently acquired the fashionable objet d'art, along with the app that goes with it, adding it to the institute's growing collection of contemporary design products. Secondly, the dress is made from four dimensional printing technologies, meaning it's a 3D-printed object meant to "change shape or automatically reassemble" according to its environment.

"We refer to Kinematics as a 4D printing system because it generates compressed objects that unfold into their intended shape after printing," creative director Jessica Rosenkrantz told Dezeen. "The garments that we've designed can only expand to their full size after being removed from the printer and they do so automatically, no assembly is required."

skirt

The dress is composed of thousands of interlocking pieces (2,279 unique triangular panels interconnected by 3,316 hinges, to be exact), taking the shape of a single folded nylon garment. The dress is entirely customizable, and is able to conform and move according to a body's flexibility. "This textile is not uniform," Nervous System explains, "it varies in rigidity, drape, flex, porosity and pattern through space."

The coordinating app allows anyone to design a Kinematics work, printed by Shapeways, "from an uploaded 3D body scan, selecting the size and shape of the modules and 'painting' them onto the dress or skirt in real-time," C-Net writes. Not only are the resulting garments verifiable works of art, they are part of a movement that seemingly democratizes the way we produce boundary-pushing fashion.

dress back

The Kinematics dress will go on view at MoMA as part of the upcoming "This Is for Everyone: Design Experiments for the Common Good," debuting on February 14, 2015. The title of the show takes its name from British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee -- you know, the inventor of the World Wide Web -- who tweeted the message as part of the Olympic opening ceremonies in London in 2012. While Berners-Lee's quote emphasizes the possibilities of information sharing across the internet, "This Is for Everyone" questions the sentiment through a series of design products that challenge the universality of that potential.

"We sometimes forget that new technologies are not inherently democratic," MoMA wrote in a press release for the exhibition. "Is design in the digital age -- so often simply assumed to be for the greater good -- truly for everyone?"

You can see a preview of the other pieces on view in the exhibition below.

The Emotional Phases Of Cleaning Your Messy Home, As Shown In GIFs

Even for the biggest slobs among us, there's only so much you can take living with a mess. It's just a matter of your personal definition of what "messy" is. For some, it's having more clothing visible on your floor than you have in your closet. For others, it's a kitchen that looked as if it were ransacked.

After the breaking point, comes the promise to start over by spending a crazed weekend cleaning everything that should've been cleaned months ago. Here is how it usually goes:

First comes the overly optimistic goal-setting. You're like, "Of course I can clean my house in a weekend. It's two whole days."

And then you procrastinate.
