Would You Like Food With That Fashion?

I originally came across the melding of fashion and food--unsurprisingly--in Paris.

It was the first time I was visiting the city of my dreams (Leslie Caron's, Gigi, was my favorite movie growing up - the gowns, the jewelry, Gaston!) while I was on a study abroad program with NYC's, Fashion Institute of Technology, in Florence.

2015-02-05-SaraLeeBentleyCAFE2illustration.jpg

A few friends and Ι decided to jet over to Paris for a few days (or rather, took a long and very unglamorous train ride) to take in the sights, be inspired and, well, window-shop our way through St. Honoré.

While wandering around the city, tired and hungry (but inarguable, very inspired) my friend, Vivien, and I wandered into the Nicole Farhi store. We both thought that our hunger pangs were playing tricks on our olfactory senses when, amongst the various garments and accessories, we undeniably caught the whiff of something yummy - this time, edible!

I don't remember exactly what it was that we ate but I do remember sitting in the restaurant looking around and being completely overcome at how the designer had managed to translate her design sensibilities into... food. It was as if something "clicked" in me and a connection between my loves of fashion and food was born!

Apparently, this connection has "clicked" for a lot of fashion people. From industry heavy hitters such as Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren--both of whom have added the title of "restaurateur" to their incredible roster of accomplishments--to models who have taken their love of baking and cooking seriously and have set up food companies.

Take for instance, supermodel Karlie Kloss. A self-professed baker, Karlie launched Karlie's Kookies in September 2012 alongside chef Christina Tosi for Momofuku Milk Bar in NYC. Naturally, Karlie's the best ambassador for the brand - eat cookies and look like a supermodel? Why not? And as if that wasn't enough of an incentive to try their dairy and gluten-free confections, proceeds from sales of Karlie's Kookies have since provided half a million nutritious meals for children around the world through FEED Projects.

Another model who decided to trade being in front of the cameras to being in front of the oven is Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann. Her culinary forays also began in 2012 when she launched Goodness, a pop-up restaurant during NY fashion week. That led to a web cooking show during which Elettra hosted various fashion and entertainment industry insiders cooking and sharing their favorite recipes with her. That has since blossomed into a very successful site, The Impatient Foodie, which has been hailed as "the fashion industry's favorite food blog."

The above are a very small sampling of the fashion-meets-food phenomenon.

It might seem a stretch at how two such different industries have found a way to coexist and, in fact, "feed" off of each other. But perhaps it's not a stretch at all and their connection is a very simple one. Creativity.

Fashion in all its forms is art. Undeniably. But cooking and baking are also art. In fact, all artists go through the same, basic creative process in their minds. Their media are just different. Instead of thinking up a novel way to construct a tailored jacket (think various gussets, darts and intricate pattern cuts) the chef/artist conjures up an innovative twist on, say, roasting cauliflower, or their own interpretation of "the best chocolate cake in the world." The final food served on the plate is the runway show, so to speak. And both art forms involve the senses although, undeniably, cooking triumphs fashion in that department.

But just as taking a better look at a garment reveals intricacies in construction that are invisible to the naked eye, in the same way, the intricacies of food are only revealed through tasting the final product. That's when the behind-the-scenes is truly revealed, a glimpse into the designer/chef's creative thought process.

So, no, the coexistence of the fashion and food industries isn't a stretch at all. In fact, just like when I wandered from the fashion boutique into the restaurant of Nicole Farhi's store in Paris all those years ago, it seems as if the two are merely the opposite sides of the same coin.

The Women Of 'SNL' Share Show Secrets

To celebrate the 40th anniversay of "Saturday Night Live," Glamour magazine hosted a reunion with 17 of the most memorable female cast members to talk about everything from their first nervewracking auditions to playing their most recognizable characters.

Yes, those tryouts do sound terrifying:

Kristen Wiig: "Auditioning for SNL is the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life. It was terrifying."

Cheri Oteri: "I got food poisoning the night before my audition. But even with no sleep, I could’ve danced with two broken legs. It’s that adrenaline."

On writing parts for women, by women:

Tina Fey: "It’s understood that everyone comes in and has to write for themselves. That’s the difference between getting handed the part of the stewardess and getting to play what you think is funny. You’re not going to stay up all night to give yourself one wife line."

Rachel Dratch: "When I came up in comedy, you had to gender-neutralize yourself for good roles. If you thought of yourself as a woman instead of as one of the players, you’d be relegated to the waitress role. But in my time on 'SNL,' that started changing."

Amy Poehler: "I liked the costumes depending on how easily I could take a nap in them. I always pitched a character called Sleeping Bag Lady, who just wore a sleeping bag, but it never caught on."

How Debbie Downer, Mary Katherine Gallagher, Mom Jeans and Target Lady were born:

Rachel Dratch: "I was on vacation in Costa Rica, and when I told someone that I was from New York, they asked, “Were you there for 9/11?” The conversation froze. When I got back, the name [Debbie Downer] popped into my head."

Molly Shannon: "Every Mary Katherine Gallagher sketch was about fear and success. I was so nervous on the show, but she made me feel brave. When you write what’s inside of you, people relate."

Tina Fey: "I was complaining about my unfortunate jeans with Amy, Maya, and Rachel. Somebody called them mom jeans, and it turned into the [ Mom Jeans ad]. Looking back, I’m at my goal weight in that commercial, even though I was wearing padding."

Kristen Wiig: "Gilly [the pesky schoolgirl] started with a silly face I made working late at the show one night. Target Lady was in fact inspired by a Target worker. Penelope came from listening to someone one-up people all the time. We all know a Penelope or two."

On female friendship:

Aidy Bryant: "Kate [McKinnon] and I are best buds, and we started calling ourselves [Dyke and Fats]. We’d be like, 'Sorry! Dyke and Fats are late.' We knew it was touchy, but it felt powerful to put it [in a 2014 skit], like, 'We don’t worry about this stuff, so neither should you.'"

Amy Poehler: "Every time I did a scene with the other ladies, it felt like a highlight. And if it was a stinker, it was almost more fun to think about how we would laugh about it later."

Kristen Wiig: "Leaving [the show] was a punch-in-the-gut sadness. It still lingers. I don’t think it will ever go away."

Our Aging Face Part 2: Engaging The Enemy!

$
0
0
This is the second article about the inevitable aging process of our face. In Part 1, I categorized and described the phases of aging according to decade. The Intrinsic and Extrinsic aging pathways were defined; Intrinsic aging is essentially genetic and Extrinsic aging is dependent and influenced by external factors like sun exposure, climate, personal habits and lifestyle. These facets do vary within the population, but their influence on the aging face is undeniable. We have no influence on our genetic side of aging, but can do much to affect, control and manipulate those external factors.

Since the journey of facial aging starts in the second decade and continues relentlessly until death, the following recommendations apply to all ages, with modest tweaks between some decades. I urge younger readers to adopt these guidelines immediately, because you have the most to gain, and are in the best position to slow down the march of time. All others can still do so much to affect the process as well, no matter what decade.

The Basics-No Excuses!

1) Hydrate-Water really is the "fountain of youth", readily available and ignored by us all. It is the primary chemical component in our body representing 60% of body weight. It helps prevent dry skin, so drink a minimum of eight 8 oz. glasses per day. It has additional benefits, like flushing out your organ systems; think of it as a cheap, simple daily cleanse!

2) Sun-Lots of sun may give you a ravishing bronze tan but tons of science guarantee that it causes dry, leathery wrinkled skin. Loss of the ozone layer and too much sun increases skin cancer incidence many fold. Use sun block and protective clothing, and if you must tan, do it early or later in the day when the rays are less strong. Don't even consider tanning beds, as they are even worse than natural sun. A great alternative is self-tanners.

3) Smoking-A no brainer! Smoking constricts blood vessels to your face, restricting the delivery of important nutrients, hurrying the aging process to warp speed! Studies comparing twins who smoke offer shocking differences from their siblings who don't. One twisted advantage of smoking? Statistics prove that smokers will die from lung cancer or heart disease at a younger age, halting the aging process completely!

4) Diet and Exercise-A balanced diet, including foods rich in anti-oxidants, help combat free radicals released by pollution in the air. Free radicals contribute greatly to the aging face. Alcohol abuse also speeds aging. Exercise enjoys numerous benefits, like increasing blood flow to the face by increasing the heart rate. Remember the sunscreen and protection when exercising outdoors.

5) Sleep and Stress-Studies show that lack of sleep and increased stress hastens aging. The body repairs itself during sleep and blood flow to all parts of the body, including the skin, increases during sleep. At least 7-8 hours of sleep is recommended. Stress causes premature aging by affecting skin at the cellular level, and can promote unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. Effective stress busters include, exercise, meditation, yoga, a warm bath and thankfully, sex!

Skin Care-The Real Battle

I present to you a simple yet proven regimen to combat the extrinsic elements aging your skin.

1) Cleansing-Wash your face after removing makeup in the evening and choose a cleanser that is suited to your skin type. Avoid ones with fragrances, which can be irritating and avoid ordinary soap which can be drying. Don't break the bank, expensive cleansers are not necessary. Don't over-do it. Cleanse after a workout or a day in the polluted city to avoid breakouts, but washing too much dries out the skin by removing natural oils. Don't bother with a toner, as they are alcohol based and can remove natural oils. A good cleanser is all you need.

2) Exfoliate-Find an exfoliation product that removes debris and dead skin cells but is not too caustic. Pain and irritation after exfoliation exposes a regimen that is too harsh for your skin. Some products may be used with a wash cloth or cleansing pouch to maximize results. Dermatologists recommend exfoliating 1-3 times a week, depending upon skin type and needs.

3) Moisturize-The cornerstone of a solid skin care routine is finding the right facial moisturizer and using it with frenzy. The first step involves determining your skin type. The options include; dry, oily mature, sensitive, normal, or a combination. The ideal moisturizer includes a sunscreen and marries your skin type with the appropriate active ingredients benefitting it. Other important choices involve specific ingredients and their characteristics like organic vs. natural, with or without fragrance. The most important attribute is one that protects your skin without harmful ingredients. Don't be fooled by fancy advertisements, a good product should also be affordable, so you can use it every day! Specific moisturizers just for the skin around the eyes should be considered after 40, as the skin is thinner and a bit different from surrounding facial skin. When in doubt, consult your dermatologist.

4) Vitamin A-Topical vitamin A products increase collagen synthesis and tempers discoloration in the skin by peeling away the top dead layer. Essentially, it thickens thinning skin. Retinol is the milder, over-the-counter version and tretinoin or tazarotene is the more concentrated prescription brand. Before age 40, Retinol should be all you need, after that, the stronger tretinoin may be helpful, but consult your plastic surgeon or dermatologist, as you will need a prescription.

5) Anti-Aging Creams-Still somewhat controversial, these products include ingredients Vitamin C, Retinol, Hydroxy Acids, and anti-oxidants like Coenzyme Q-10. Individually, studies have shown that they help to reduce fine wrinkles and improve skin quality. Effectiveness depends upon concentration of specific ingredients and length of use. For this reason dermatologists opinions vary regarding timing of use.

As you can see, we don't have to sit back and accept our wrinkles without a fight. Let's age with dignity, but at a slower pace!

If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." -- Mae West

Dating in a Digital World

From texting and sexting on mobile phones to liking posts and unfriending on Facebook, the amount of opportunities to make a good or bad impression digitally with a potential date or digital crush seems to be endless these days.

In time for Valentine's Day, Match has released their Fifth Annual Singles in America Study showing the habits of 5,675 U.S. singles between the ages of 18 to 70+. Before you push the send button on your latest selfie or send that good night text with an emoticon, let's take a look at the habits of singles and digital dating.

Singles who date online go on more dates.

According to the study, 82% of singles went on a date in 2014 with someone they met online, as compared to 49% of those who were dating offline. Online daters went on an average of 4.2 dates in 2014, as compared to offline daters who went on an average of 2.8 dates.

This makes sense since online dating is efficient and effective. It's available 24 hours a day and it's an easy way to fill your date card. The challenge is to take your date from online to offline.

The study also stated that online daters are looking for a more committed relationship, are more likely to be more educated, and have full time jobs.

Since 60% of singles log onto social networking sites for an average of one-hour per day, perhaps you should start liking the posts of someone you might have a digital crush on, remember to use spell-check and grammar check, and mind your texting manners to capture his or her heart.

Since texting plays a huge role in in the dating process, the study highlights what men and women like and dislike when receiving text messages. Here are some dos and don'ts to consider before pushing the send button.

Texting Etiquette Dos and Dont's from Single Men to Women

1. Do post photos
2. Don't text more than once before a reply
3. Do post sexy texts
4. Don't text during work hours
5. Do post emoticons
6. Don't post slang (LOL, OMG, etc.)

Dakota Johnson And Jamie Dornan Confess Little In Glamour 'Confessions' Video

"Fifty Shades of Grey" stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan sat down for a "confessions" video as part of their feature in Glamour magazine's March 2015 issue. But the two didn't have much to confess.

Glamour had people ask Johnson and Dornan a series of questions via an iPad. The questions ranged from things about their personal lives to things about their movie characters.

What did viewers learn? Johnson thinks rain is the sexiest weather and the aquarium is the weirdest place to have sex. Dornan thinks hair is the sexiest thing about a woman and he has "never been on a date." As for their "Fifty Shades" characters, Johnson said Anastasia Steele's spirit animal would be a unicorn and Dornan said he and Christian Grey have the same feet.

Asked to describe Johnson in three words, Dornan chose "funny," "talented" and "caring"; when Johnson was asked to come up with one to describe Dornan, she paused.

"It's meant to be instinctual," he interjected.

"Superb," she responded. "You're welcome."

And so continues the sizzling "Fifty Shades of Grey" press tour.

Natalie Portman Stuns As A Runaway Bride In New Dior Ad

Julia Roberts has some competition in the runaway bride category.

On Wednesday, Dior released an ad -- or short film, as they're calling it -- titled "It's Miss, Actually," for the latest Miss Dior fragrance.

It stars Natalie Portman clad in a gorgeous Dior wedding gown, but her mind is hardly on marriage. The film alternates between clips of Portman walking down the aisle with her father and running away for adventures in a helicopter, all set to the tune of Janis Joplin's "Piece Of My Heart."

"The story is about escaping, about getting away from all the things that tie you down in life," Director Anton Corbijn said, according to Vogue. "Natalie Portman was fantastic. She is real, she's genuine. You can see it on the screen, and people relate to it. I think that this 'truth' is more important than beauty. Being a beautiful woman is not enough. She's a real person, a good person, and her personality makes the difference.”

So don't even think about calling Natalie Portman "madam." It's "miss," actually.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian news report says an underwire bra saved a woman's life after she was struck near the heart by a stray bullet.

Globo television network says Ivete Medeiros, a merchant in the Amazonian city of Belem, was hit after she heard a commotion and emerged from a market to investigate. A thief holding up a passer-by on the other side of the street opened fire, and a bullet struck Medeiros under her left breast.

Medeiros's husband told Globo he thought his wife had died.

But the bullet lodged in the underwire of her black lace bra. Thursday's report showed images of Medeiros' dress, with a small hole, the bra and a squashed bullet.

Medeiros told the network, "It was a deliverance from God."

Taylor Swift won't be performing at the Grammys, but she'll still be there to accept the three awards she might take home.

It's just as well, since we're only tuning in to see her sick dance moves.

Kerry Washington Fans In Uproar Over Lighter Skin On InStyle Cover

NEW YORK (AP) — Handle it, InStyle.

Kerry Washington took to social media late Wednesday to gush about her March cover for the magazine, but her skin tone in an image she posted on Instagram and Twitter appeared significantly lighter than in real life. The difference wasn't lost on dozens of commenters, while others were as "THRILLED" as the "Scandal" star.

Wrote one sad fan: "Glad you made the cover kerry, but this isn't right. I'm sorry. It's not. Don't let them do that to you." Another chimed in: "Why is she white in this picture."

Some negative comments were later removed.

InStyle said in a statement Thursday that it, too, fielded complaints from people concerned that Washington's skin was deliberately lightened.

"While we did not digitally lighten Kerry's skin tone, our cover lighting has likely contributed to this concern. We understand that this has resulted in disappointment and hurt. We are listening, and the feedback has been valuable. We are committed to ensuring that this experience has a positive influence on the ways in which we present all women going forward," the magazine said.

Washington later tweeted the magazine's explanation in full, adding: "Beautiful statement. Thank u 4 opening this convo. Its an important 1 that needs to be had."

The Olivia Pope actress isn't a newcomer to cover controversy. Lucky magazine took some Photoshop heat for a Kerry December/January cover also declared unrecognizable by some in 2013.

The InStyle cover has her brightly lit in a white, shoulder-baring dress, hands on hips and hair windswept.

Charlotte McKinney's star is white hot after her Carl's Jr. Super Bowl commercial.

The 21-year-old model was back in the spotlight at the John Frieda Hair Care Beach Blonde Collection party Thursday at the Garage in New York City. She donned an off-the-shoulder white dress with nude pumps and wavy hair for the event.

Jaws dropped over McKinney's Carl's Jr. "All Natural" ad when it debuted ahead of the Super Bowl last month. The spot aired only in Western states during the big game on Sunday and has since racked up nearly 9 million views on YouTube.

“It’s been crazy,” she told ABC News of her whirlwind fame. “I haven’t had time to wrap my head around it but I’m just excited and grateful.”

Women Read Playboy For The First Time

Fun fact: Between pages of naked women, there are actual articles in Playboy.

BuzzFeed asked 10 women who had never read Playboy to read the magazine and give some feedback. The reactions ranged from hilarious to confused as the women flipped through Playboy issues from the 1960s through 2015.

The women made some interesting discoveries. They found that a full bush was definitely big in the 80s, and that when it comes to models, Playboy has a serious lack of diversity. Apparently, the mag hasn't quite figured out its image yet, since the content ranges from "porno mag" to Vanity Fair-esque, as one woman put it.

While the magazine has attempted to rebrand its image of late by discussing real issues such as feminism and rape culture, these ladies probably won't be subscribing any time soon. One woman joked about Playboy's readership: “They have the young men who really just want to look at the pictures, then there’s the like ‘I’m a little bit more sophisticated’ man I’m going to read the articles now. Then there’s ‘I’m old, I have to read the articles so that I don’t come off as a pervert.’"

Martina Big's Implants Let Her Pump Up Her Size 32 L Breasts

In 2012, Martina Big had a high-flying career as a flight attendant, but the job didn't get her as pumped up as she'd like.

“Many think a flight attendant would be an exciting, varied dream job, but the job is pretty stressful sometimes. Some passengers are very tiring and if you fly always the same routes it is quickly monotonous," she said, according to the Mirror.

She also felt the conservative nature of the job her back from her real dream: Having super-duper, humongous breasts.

“It’s about the image that I had to maintain as a flight attendant for the airline," she said, according to InTouch Weekly. "Small, discreet body modifications are no problem as a flight attendant but I wanted a showy, extravagant look.”

With the help of her pilot boyfriend, Michael, Big spent big bucks on plastic surgery -- about $56,000 -- to get her breasts as large as possible. She describes her breast size as a whooping 32 L, according to information she posted on a modeling website.

martina big

What really gets Big pumped up about her implants is that they are refillable and be increased or decreased in size without additional surgery, according to Jezebel.com.

The saline is injected into a long hose that connects into a walnut-shaped port near her right underarm.

"The doctor is controlling this very well and it's obviously an interesting and unusual project but it's nothing dangerous," she told Barcroft TV.

Big has had six pump-up procedures in the last three years. The amount of saline in her implants gradually increased from 650 milliliters to 2,500 milliliters per boob. Ultimately, she dreams of a injecting 5,000 milliliters of saline in each breast.

San Diego-based cosmetic surgeon Dr. Barry Handler told HuffPost that the method Big uses to increase her bust is fairly common, but is used more for reconstructive patients than those who want cosmetic surgery.

He said the FDA doesn't usually allow U.S. doctors to insert breast implants above 800 milliliters, but there is one that can go to 960 milliliters that is allowed for obese patients.

As big as Big's breasts are, they are not the biggest bust implants in the world -- or even in Germany.

Mayra Hills, 27, who models under the name "Beshine," claims to have size 32 Z breasts on her 5-foot-6 frame.

But Big's big boobs have paid off; she's in high demand with photographers like Ortwin Schneider.

"It's better to photograph her than to book three girls with half the breast size," he said, according to Cosmopolitan.com.

Big has dealt with severe infections as a result of her surgeries, but she says the reaction she gets is worth the risk.

"When I am walking around in a skin-tight T-shirt, I have seen people on a bike riding past and then driving into a lamp post," she told Barcroft TV.

5 Things We Learned From Kim Kardashian's Love Magazine Interview

$

In addition to being very, very naked in multiple photos for Love magazine's Spring/Summer issue, Kim Kardashian was interviewed by model Cara Delevingne (who guest-edited the entire issue), and here's a few things we gleaned from their chat:

1. Kim's father, Robert Kardashian, taught her to drive when she was just 14 years old so she could go to parties with her older sister, Kourtney.

"Kourtney had just turned 16 and he told me: 'You never know if she and her friends are going to get drunk, so you have to go with her and hang out with her, and you always have my permission to drive them home if any of them are drinking.' ... So I became the official driver."

2. She's tired of people who can't get over the fact she made a sex tape with her one-time boyfriend.

"Maybe that's how some people heard about me but I didn't launch my career off of that. That was 12 years ago, no 13 years ago now, so I just try to move on and put it in the past because I think that everyone in life does things they're not proud of but you can't sit and dwell on them forever."

3. She's also tired of people who don't think she does anything.

"We've had more episodes than 'I Love Lucy!' And I'm proud that we give so many people jobs. Like, our lighting guy handing me a key chain last season and said, 'I just want to thank you -- I've worked for you guys for eight seasons and you helped me buy a house.' So I get a little bit frustrated at people not understanding. Like when they ask, 'What do you do?' I mean, what an uneducated question! And I just want to help change the perception that being on a reality show is such a negative thing."

4. Kanye West helped her get over her glitter obsession and ensured North would never develop one.

"I was obsessed with glitter, rhinestone heels and the kind of clothes that I now laugh at, and he threw them all out. I said, 'Well I'm going to save them for my daughter one day.' And he said, 'Well if it's going to our daughter, she never going to wear those!'"

5. She's totally cool with nudity (not that we didn't know that already.

"Even better I like nudity," she said when Delevingne mentions that Love editor and chief Katie Grand often uses models with no clothing at all in her photo spreads. "Kanye always says, 'Dress sexier.' He's always encouraging."

That Time A Divorced Couple Went To Court To Split Their Beanie Babies

Remember in 1999 when we all thought we were going to get stupid rich by collecting Beanie Babies?

Something tells us the couple in the photo below remembers it all too well:

beanie babies

Nov 5, 1999, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA: Attorney Frank Totti looks over papers while his client Frances Mountain sorts out Beanie Babies with her ex-husband Harold Mountain in Judge Gerald Hardcastle's Family Courtroom in Las Vegas November 5. The couple, who were divorced four months ago, were ordered to divide up the collection valued at $2,500 to $5000 but were unable to do so by themselves. The collection was ordered spread on the court floor and divided up one by one under the supervision of Family Court Judge Hardcastle.

Maple the Bear was the first to go.

Cost of Maple Bear today on Amazon.com: $7.90.

The surreal photo surfaced on Reddit Thursday after first appearing in a Slate piece on the Beanie Babies craze -- and thank goodness it did. May we never forget how obsessed we all were with small stuffed animals 16 years ago.

Never.
