Rihanna Got A New Cross Tattoo On Her Wrist

0
0
Rihanna's body is fairly well inked at this point, but that didn't stop her from adding to the canvas this weekend. The singer stopped by New York's Bang Bang Tattoos to add a large cross to the tribal design that already decorated her wrist and hand.

Rihanna is a big fan of tattoo artists Bang Bang McCurdy and Cally–Jo, who work out of the Lower East Side Manhattan tattoo parlor. Back in October, the duo flew down to the Dominican Republic to give the star a henna–inspired tattoo on her right wrist and hand. They worked around Rihanna's existing tribal Maori tattoo as they carefully drew and tattooed the intricate design.

So, it's no surprise that the "Stay" singer returned to Bang Bang Tattoos early Saturday morning (Jan. 11) to add to the design. Reportedly, Rihanna stayed at the shop from midnight until 5 a.m. getting a cross added on the inside of her wrist.

Bang Bang tattoos posted a photo of the finished product on their Instagram account, writing, "I love tattooing @badgalriri," in reference to the singer's Twitter handle.

This isn't the first cross tattoo for the 25–year–old. In 2012, Bang Bang McCurdy tattooed a small cross onto Rihanna's collarbone. At the time, McCurdy told Us Weekly, "She always flips out [when it's done] and jumps up and down like a 16-year-old girl getting her first car."

What will be next in Rihanna's tattoo portfolio? Your guess is as good as ours.

Win The Battle Against Winter And Your Skin, Hair and Nails

By its pure design, the winter season is not on your side when it comes to your skin. The colder months lack humidity, which pulls the natural oils and moisture from your skin's surface to cause dryness. Then, it throws in icy cold wind to not only add to the trouble, but potentially cause windburn and other issues too.

Indoor heating systems don't help matters at all, and rather add to the problem by drying the environment (and you) as well. This is why the winter months wreak havoc on these parts of the body. Skin, hair and nails can become dry, brittle and affected by the elements throughout the cold weather season.

While we all know this about winter, and to slather on moisturizer, conditioner and other products for the battle, it can be a lot of extra steps during already hectic lives and lifestyles. The key to getting the job done and doing it as effectively as possible, all lies in the products -- not the effort alone -- that you use. In fact, good products can make it easier to fight off winter's abuse on your skin, hair and nails. By doing their part well, they save time while handling the problem for you.

Ideally, you'll want to moisturize daily if you can. If the idea of covering yourself head to toe with moisturizer sounds like it'll take extra time you don't have, opt for a shower oil instead. Wait until you're about to finish, and cover yourself with a thin layer of the product from your feet to your shoulders. Towel off without removing it, and it'll create a layer of moisturizer on the skin. You can also rinse it off if you prefer. Aesop makes a selection of shower oils that work well and smell great.

Sloughing off dry, dead skin can also play a part in keeping winter's elements at bay. Look for a body scrub that has natural oils in it, which can pack a moisturizing punch in addition to helping to take away any dead skin accumulated. Eight Skincare's shower scrub blends eight natural oils (hence the name!) that took on and won the driest of skin here. Smooth Naturals is another worthy option. The banana scent smells so good!

For nails, you'll hear a lot about Bio-Oil, and it does work! It's inexpensive and can be found at most drug stores or online. Load up your cuticles and nails with a dab at least once a week, and you should see a difference in dry, cracked skin around the nails on your hands and feet. For hair, From The Lab's Hair Mask is very good. Load your tresses up once a week or so and sleep on it, then rinse in the shower in the morning.

A good facial oil can also be an asset in the winter. Derma E offers a handful of choices that are delicate and great for most skin types. You can wear it under makeup, use at night, or wear on the weekends when you're makeup-free for a bit of extra dewy moisture on your forehead, nose and cheeks.

Hoosier Style at Indiana University

When many think of Indiana University, they think Bobby Knight, Little 500, The Kelley School of Business, Greek life and so much more. IU, being considered a public school with Ivy League quality, has some of the most unique students in the country. While about half of IU's students are from Indiana, there are students from the other 49 states, as well as students from 165 foreign nations. You're bound to see and experience it all, and that's what makes my job as a Style Guru such a rewarding experience.

We are fortunate enough to experience all four seasons in Hoosier nation. I don't think there is anything more breathtaking than the fall time in Bloomington. Campus gets set on fire with the vibrant changing of leaves. It's hard not to stop and really look around and appreciate going to school at such a beautiful place. The same goes for spring, so many flowers to get us out of our winter depression and sick with spring fever. IU isn't voted one of the most beautiful campuses in the world for no reason!

IU has a style much like most of the Midwestern colleges. The average guy loves his collared button-downs, salmon pants and Sperry's, and the ladies love their leggings, combat boots and chambray tops. But, when you're least expecting it, you'll spot someone who rocks a look that leaves you feeling grateful you happened to be carrying your camera on that particular day.

That is exactly how I viewed this Fashionista. I have always been a fan of photographing and writing about different dresses, and her fall-time attire was exception. I viewed this as the perfect outfit for a day of classes, or a night out to dinner.

I loved the bright floral pattern of her dress. She displays the perfect combination of dark and colorful that gives her look a fun feel while still keeping it appropriate for the season. Her long cardigan is just right for those days when the weather isn't quite cold enough for a coat but you need a little extra something to block that crisp air. Nothing feels better slipping into during those colder months than that perfect cardigan or oversized sweater. They look good with just about anything too!

She effortlessly tied together the remainder of her outfit with a pair of classic black tights and a fabulous pair of ankle boots. For a look similar to hers, I would check out Nordstrom or Forever 21. Both stores are popular amongst IU's fashion scene, and both have gorgeous options at a college-affordable price. For a cardigan, take a look at LOFT. It's the perfect store for those classy additions to boost any outfit. Last but not least, for an edgy pair of boots like she is rocking, I would definitely recommend something from Urban Outfitters. You can always find a one of a kind item there that will be sure to leave a lasting impression.

From high fashion to candy stripes, Hoosiers have their own unique style that makes this college town everything it is.

Sydney is a junior at Indiana University majoring in journalism and minoring in apparel merchandising. When she isn't writing for College Fashionista, you can find her hanging with girlfriends, watching IU basketball, drinking iced coffee, and listening to One Direction. She hopes to one day turn her favorite hobby into a career as a fashion journalist.

H&M Under Fire For Labeling 'Medium' Models As 'Plus-Size'

0

It's official: The entire world is sick of the "plus-size" label.

H&M came under fire last week when its latest catalogue landed in mailboxes, highlighting the store's "plus-size" section. But the models featured immediately raised eyebrows from customers who thought they appeared smaller than plus-size. "You should be ashamed as a company to say that THIS is PLUS SIZE!" one customer tweeted. "No wonder girls think they have to look a certain way," another added.

The backlash was even felt in the Swedish retailer's home country, thanks to swimmer and anti-bulimia advocate Emma Igelström. "H&M needs to take their responsibility for this," Igelström told The Local. "They are sponsors to the Swedish Olympics team, but by calling this model plus size they are strengthening the idea that super skinny is the ideal."

In response to the criticism, H&M released a statement claiming that all of the models in the "plus-size" section were wearing at least an EU size 44 (US size 14), the standard for plus-size clothing. But an H&M representative agreed that it was open to "interpretation" as to whether or not these models, who Expressen reports could easily wear a size medium, should be considered "plus-size."

While it's refreshing to see more and more body types in the pages of our magazines, many people have become frustrated with the classification system that divides straight and plus-size models. When you can't tell the difference between the two, the "plus-size" designation seems particularly arbitrary (see: Robyn Lawley).

Models like Tyra Banks have spoken out agains the use of the term and a few agencies have even tried to mix both straight and plus-size and models (though these experiments haven't been enormously successful). But the resounding plea from industry insiders and customers alike has been: Forget the labels and stop segregating body types.

So can't we all agree to simply call them "models"?

Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin Engage In Tasteful PDA At Sean Penn's Haiti Gala

Ten years and still going strong! Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin engaged in some public displays of affection Saturday (Jan. 11) at Sean Penn's annual gala to support Haiti.

Paltrow and Martin demonstrated a bit of tasteful PDA at the Help Haiti Home fundraising gala held at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., E! News noted. The two were spotted laughing and cuddling up to one another at the table. At times, the actress whispered into her husband's ear.

The 41-year-old star, looking gorgeous in a white ensemble and bright red lipstick, and the 36-year-old rocker celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary last month. The two married in Santa Barbara on Dec. 5, 2003, and their spark seems to be very much alive.

Martin shelled out $650,000 for an original Banksy piece at the event, according to RadarOnline.com. Other A-list celebrities in attendance included Penn, Anderson Cooper, Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron and Goldie Hawn.

12 Storage Ideas For When Your Place Is Just. Too. Small. (PHOTOS)

0

No matter how much your rent or mortgage is, no matter where you live or how many people live with you, one thing's probably certain: You don't have as much space as you want. Here are 12 ways to carve out more room in your home when there isn't much to begin with.

Hang Anything On The Wall. Though you might want to call in a professional when it comes to something like bikes.

Use Baskets Whenever Possible The stylish way to mask a mild hoarding problem.

Optimize Shelves With, You Guessed It, Baskets They basically become drawers when tucked inside cheap-o small bookshelves.

Make A Wall Of Bookshelves If you paint them all one color, they look like built-ins. Sorta.

Add Shelves To The Back Of Your Cabinets There are more temporary solutions, if you can't drill away.

Put Behind-The-Door Shoe Holders To Other Uses These aren't just for shoes -- basically, they can corral anything small. Use them for socks and underwear, rolled-up towels, toiletries, cleaning products, etc.

Add A Shower Caddy Ta-da. More room for your half-full bottles of shampoo and body products taken from hotels.

Get Creative An old dish rack can hold your mail, files and other loose papers.

Use Pegboard In The Kitchen If it was good enough for Julia Child, it's good enough for you.

Put Everything (Small) In Mason Jars They take up less space than standard Tupperware-type storage pieces, look great, are dirt cheap and can be hung underneath cabinets.

Use Under-Bed Boxes Though their name pigeonholes these storage products, under-bed boxes also work wonders underneath sofas and media cabinets (as long as there's enough room under each, of course). Perfect for those of us who refuse to go digital with our massive movie collections.

Think Small You might need all the closet space you can get, but if you can sacrifice a nook, you could technically fit in a small desk/office. This will free up some floor space in the main living areas.

Here's a home where space -- and money -- apparently aren't an issue.

Octomom Charged With Welfare Fraud

After months of investigation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has charged Nadya Suleman, aka Octomom, with three counts of felony welfare fraud, reports TMZ.

Suleman, who gained notoriety and the nickname Octomom after she gave birth to octuplets in 2009, has been charged with one count of aid by misrepresentation, and two counts of perjury by false application for aid for failing to report nearly $30,000 in earnings between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2013.

The mother of 14 young children is accused of failing to disclose income she received from the porn video she released in June 2012, as well earnings from personal appearances.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Suleman is accused of having illegally received a total of $16,481 in welfare payments during the first six months of 2013.

As previously reported, under California law, Suleman (and her 14 dependents) qualifies for welfare provided she earns less than $119,000 in a calendar year, but financial records from her former employers indicate that Suleman grossed upward of $200,000 back in 2012.

Stylish Blogger Reminds Us: 'The Hijab And Fashion Are Not Mutually Exclusive' (VIDEO)

When we think about religion, fashion isn't exactly the first thing that pops into our minds.

That's not the case, however, for fashion blogger and FIT student Sobia Masood. Her blog, titled "Cloaked With Faith," puts both her spiritual and artistic expression on display.

Masood chatted with HuffPost Live Monday about her decision to start wearing a hijab, a head-and-chest covering worn by many Muslim women, as a way to not only feel closer to her religious roots, but to highlight her keen sense of style as well.

While hijabs plays an important role in Islam, there is plenty of freedom in terms of how they are worn and styled. Masood explains it as a matter of personal preference. "Islam doesn't tell us exactly what outfit to wear, or what colors to wear or what headpiece to wear. It gives us a certain guideline. Every Muslim woman has the right to interpret it the way they want to," she noted.

Masood's blog posts feature skillfully styled outfits with just a touch of humor (her Instagram handle is @Sobi1Conobi and she signs her posts "may the fashion force be with you"). She also boasts an impressive 3,000 followers on Instagram. Did we mention that she's ridiculously adorable?

She is not the first woman to draw attention to the world of Muslim fashion. In fact, we are noticing more and more stories like this one every day. The trend of religion and style blending together is truly inspiring.

Check out some photos of Masood below as well as a clip from her interview above. Head to HuffPost Live to catch the full segment.

Beauty Routine: What Is in Martha Stewart's Vanity

0
0
Martha Stewart's precious "now here's why you should stencil your driveway" approach to living doesn't quite extend, I was relieved to see, to her beauty routine. In the New York Times article "For Martha Stewart, The Secret Is Routine," Martha's regimen is more rigorous than fussy. I even found myself agreeing with some of her approaches. Although, not all of them.

Martha Stewart is a face mask lover and, in this, she is woman after my own heart. I don't use a face mask every day (as Martha seems to), but several times a week and my favorite is Royal Nectar's Bee Venom Mask ($68) as it gives my face the kind of glow I would have if I led a less decadent life. (What is it about Martha Stewart that makes me what to confess to a guilty conscience?) Martha's preference is for Susan Ciminelli's Hydrating Gel Mask.

Now I was not aware of Susan Ciminelli, but when I read that Martha Stewart uses her body lotion "head to toe," I had to find out more. I didn't know whether to groan with dismay or howl with admiration when I saw that this Upper Eastside esthetician is able to sell bottled water for $55. Okay, its not just water, it is seawater. But then can't Ms. Stewart get as much seawater as she needs every time she goes to The Hamptons? Mind you, Susan Ciminelli has "slight desalinated" her $55 version.

Martha Stewart typically uses Skinceuticals CE Ferulic Cream. This isn't a bad product and there is good science showing that the addition of ferulic acid to vitamin E and C improves their ability to limit sun damage. Thrifty Martha should be pleased to know that Skinceuticals CE Ferulic Cream has a product twin -- an exact replica, made by CSS, that sells for a $100 less.

I guess Martha is thrifty because she proudly admits to trying to get away with using her face serum as her eye cream. Actually, there are quite a few compelling reasons to have a dedicated eye cream. When Martha Stewart does use one, it is Cle de Peau's. This is not a good choice, especially not at $250. Take off a zero and it still isn't worth the money still it is mostly wax, silicone and petrolatum. The good ingredients are not exactly cutting edge -- hydrolyzed silk and a few botanical extracts -- are buried at the end of the ingredients list.

I like that Martha Stewart prefers to mix things up. One day it's Mario Badescu. Another it's Yon-Ka. While it is true that you can only know if something is working (at repairing wrinkles, say) if you use it consistently, the skin's needs can change daily and require switching up the potions and lotions depending on how dry, sensitive, open pored, dull one is on any given day. So, I too, often choose amongst a few products to find a match for my skin's needs.

And that's not all we have in common. I shall walk to work wearing my sunscreen and knowing that Martha Stewart is too. But then when I think about the new sun hat she just bought to go over "riding helmet" (horse riding, I presume), I am reminded of our different worlds both in and outside the bathroom.

Shia LaBeouf Responds To Jim Carrey's Golden Globes Diss

Recently retired famous person, Shia LaBeouf may be shirking all aspects of "public life," but he apparently tuned into Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards, and -- shocker -- he didn't take one joke very well.

The 27-year-old took to Twitter following the ceremony to respond to Jim Carrey's quip that made light of LaBeouf's recent plagiarism brouhaha: "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard ... I believe it was Shia LaBeouf who said that," Carrey said before presenting the award for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

"If you explain @JimCarrey you've killed him, Nobody knows if it's for real or not. That way he's immortal," LaBeouf tweeted before moving on to an attack on Carrey's parenting skills.

The former Disney star posted a YouTube video of Carrey's daughter's band, "The Jane Carrey Band," and then tweeted, "At least I don't get arrested for indecency on major LA highways! Or abandon love child's [sic]."

Within hours, LaBeouf deleted his previous tweet and was singing a different tune when it came to Carrey's parenting abilities:

And the "Transformers" star finished his bizarre Twitter response by taking the time to remind us all that he's a now a private citizen.

Allison Janney on TV, Film, Life and Love

You know her best for playing C.J. Cregg, the press secretary on The West Wing, in addition to being in a slew of films not limited to, but including Drop Dead Gorgeous, The Help, and more recently The Way Way Back.

Allison Janney is an acting marvel who plays a wide range of roles and has an impeccable comedic timing.

You can now see that comedic timing on the new hit CBS sitcom Mom. Recently, Allison made our eyes fill with tears via her complex portrayal as the housewife of a closeted gay university provost in Masters of Sex on Showtime; the show will be returning for a second season this year.

Allison and I sat down and had a wildly fun conversation about her career, life, her love for her craft, and how truly ready she is for love.

Hi, Allison. Thanks for taking the time to converse with me today.

No, not at all, thank you, Bryan.

When I heard that you were going to be on TV again, I was elated.

I was excited too. I had been looking for a vehicle like this for quite some time. After The West Wing, which is one of my favorite things I've ever done, I lost quite a bit of my personal life doing that show because the hours were so demanding. I had always heard that a multi-camera scenario is a great way to be an actress and have a personal life.

A single-camera show can be really time-consuming. It's almost like shooting a movie every week. So, how do you like it so far? It seems like you're having a blast.

I just love the whole process from start to finish, from the first read on into rehearsals. The playground in this type of show needs you to be so fast, think on your feet, and you get to rehearse. I love to rehearse; you don't really get the chance to do that when doing TV or film. You get to make suggestions -- it's so fun, creative, and rewarding.

So, would you say it's a lot like theater acting?

Yes, it is. I came from the theater -- we get to shoot in front of a live audience on Fridays, it's great. I love shooting in front of an audience, it's very comfortable for me. I feel very grateful for this job. I'm glad that they ordered the back nine and I hope that they'll give us another season.

The show is getting a pretty good reception from the audiences and that's what's important. I think the show is fantastic; you and the cast are doing a phenomenal job.

Thank you, Bryan, that's sweet of you to say. I just try not to get ahead of myself with these kinds of things. I just try to do what's inside me and leave those worries to the powers that be.

I will concede that it is kind of scary how quickly television can change. One second you can be a hit, and then the next second you're on the bubble.

I know, it's terrifying. Like I said, I just try not to worry about it. Back when we were doing The West Wing, this little show called The Bachelor started -- it was the advent of reality TV and it killed us. It pissed me off; I couldn't understand why people want to watch these stupid reality shows, which I still hate.

It was when the writers' strike happened that these shows started to come out. It's this huge profitable engine for this extremely small group of people. Meanwhile, the brains of reality TV viewers are being skillet-fried.

Right, and I think that's what's taking away from actors, directors, and writers. I have friends who work in reality TV and they know how I feel about it. It's like rubbernecking during a train wreck.

(Laughs) It's like that bad carton of milk in the fridge -- you know it's bad, but you have to smell it anyway before you throw it out.

Exactly. (Laughs) That's right, Bryan.

Why do we torture ourselves like this?

I don't know. Maybe it's that thought that things are funny if they happen to other people.

Oh, happy belated birthday! I almost forgot. Did you get to do anything fun to celebrate?

Thank you! A friend of mine that lives on my street has the same birthday as I do. I just didn't feel like dealing with mine this year, so she threw a party and I went to her birthday party instead. I usually do a big thing like go to Vegas or make everyone wear wigs and go to a dance club -- I usually do something outrageous, but this year I wasn't feeling it. I had a nice lunch with Anna Farris and there were a lot of people around who knew it was my birthday and sent over desserts.

I'm glad you had a good time; you deserve it. I just want to get on another show that I am in love with -- Masters of Sex; it's an incredible show.

I'm so f****** lucky to be part of that show. They hadn't even written the episodes yet when Michelle Ashford called me and asked me if I wanted to come on board and play this character. She told me that there might be some nudity and some sex scenes. I was like, "you do know how old I am, right?" Okay, so we'll work around that. Of course, I want to be brave and fortunately, I gave up pasta six months prior. I had stopped eating it for a while so that I could see what that would do to my body.

(Laughs) That's really hard to give up.

(Laughs) So, I lost a dramatic amount of weight, started working out, and decided that at this moment I don't feel particularly awful about my body. So, I said if I was going to do it, then now is the time. I was brave and decided to do it.

You have to be brave to do that.

Then, I started to get the scripts and was blown away -- I didn't know what was going to happen from one moment to the next. It was such rich material. I love the character because she's so strong in the face of this terrible tragedy, she refuses to be the victim and she keeps trying to make it work. I also love the vulnerability - especially with the moment where the Teddy Sears character is about to break up with her, she lets him off the hook to save face at this extreme humiliating moment. It's incredibly emotional and complex.

It was heartbreaking to see her go through all of this humiliation, but inspiring to see her strength in the face of adversity.

This is the kind of stuff I was trained to do, just like in the theater -- going from Noel Coward to Arthur Miller. It's an actor's dream to be able to [do] two totally different characters at the same time.

It's becoming more common to see actors doing multiple television projects at the same time.

I remember Cynthia Nixon was doing two different plays on Broadway at the same time. I just remember how cool and how remarkable it was -- I feel like I'm doing that same thing on television.

I can imagine how much like theatre that would be. Especially on Mom, where I would imagine that you are doing quite a bit of improv.

Every once in a while, I might throw something in. I think with my physicality I'm able to do a little improv.

I could see how that would come into it with your height. See, Allison, I am one of those guys that has a thing for tall women.

Really? How tall are you, Bryan?

I would say that I'm a hair under 5'9".

I love that you love tall women. All of the guys that I've dated have been shorter than me.

Do you look for guys that are taller than you?

No, I can't say that I have looked specifically for a particular height -- I gotta say, Bryan, at this point, it's whoever knocks at my door.

(Laughs) You're stunning, Allison. There is no reason that I should be hearing you say whoever knocks on your door.

I want to find a man who will be in love with me and take care of me, and I will love him and take care of him. I want to find love so badly. They say if you don't look, then it will come, but I desperately want to find a relationship that works for me. It is so hard being in this town and being single.

Do you get out and about and meet people?

That's the thing, Bryan -- I don't like to go out. I'm not really a Hollywood party kind of person. I hate parties; I like to have people over to my house for small dinners and game nights or a movie.

I'm the same way -- get me in a game of Monopoly or Taboo and I can go all night.

I know I'm not going to meet that person sitting in my house, so I have to get out of my comfort zone and get out and meet people.

You're this big star, and you're highly visible so it's not like you can get out there and start online dating. Can you imagine what would happen if you did that? 'C.J. is looking for love online!' That's what they would say and they won't even call you Allison.

I know. I would be this novelty date for everyone. I don't know, I might have to go to a professional matchmaker.

No, don't do that!

Well, what am I going to do, Bryan?

I've always wondered that though -- how do you date in Hollywood? That has to be a challenging thing.

I don't know at this point in my life. I've had many long-term relationships, but I've never been married. I'm wondering how I'm going to make that part of my life work.

Does it have to be someone in Hollywood because they'll know and respect your busy schedule? Or does it have to be somebody outside of Hollywood?

I don't necessarily have to have someone in the business, it might be better if I had someone who isn't. I'm open to any profession as long as they understand and have an appreciation for what I do. I wouldn't be able to imagine being with someone who didn't get what I do -- that wouldn't be so great.

If it was someone in showbiz, who would it be? Who would be top five showbiz guys that would just make you say 'that's the guy?'

There are a few men that I've worked with that I would have considered, but they're married so since it wouldn't happen I'm not going to say their names. I wouldn't want their wives to come after me.

There isn't anybody? Not even one, maybe?

No, they're all married -- it's so frustrating. The ones that aren't married are either gay, or they are not age appropriate.

Wait a minute -- back up a second! Age appropriate? You can transform into cougar mode and snatch that up, right? (Laughs)

Don't you worry about me, Bryan -- I've been in cougar mode before. That's not real, I can't do that. I couldn't do it. I'm too insecure for that.

How is that different from there being a height difference though?

I would be way more comfortable dating a 5-feet tall guy than I would be dating a 23-year-old guy.

Wouldn't you have to lift him up to kiss him though?

Everything evens out when you lie down. (Laughs)

(Laughs) That is very true.

Be sure to check out "Mom" on CBS, Mondays at 9:30/8:30c and watch for the season two premiere of "Masters of Sex" on Showtime.

David O. Russell Compares Jennifer Lawrence's 'Hunger Games' Commitment To Slavery (UPDATE)

0
0
Jennifer Lawrence is everywhere these days, and while it does seem as if she's pushing herself too much at times, director David O. Russell took hyperbole to a new level when he likened her workload to forced labor.

Russell, who directed the 23-year-old star in "American Hustle" and her Oscar-winning performance in "Silver Linings Playbook," told the New York Daily News that Lawrence is in need of a much deserved break, especially since she's tied to the "Hunger Games" franchise like a slave.

“I personally think they should give her a bit of breathing room over there because they’re printing money. But she’s a very alive person," Russell told the paper at the Australian Academy’s AACTA Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 10. “I’ll tell you what it is about that girl -- talk about 12 years of slavery, that’s what the franchise is. And I’m going to get in so much trouble for saying that.”

Russell went on to compare "The Hunger Games" to a "hamster wheel," and explained that Lawrence tries to take on more artistic roles as a "vacation," in between more commercial films. (In addition to "The Hunger Games," Lawrence also plays a key role in the "X-Men" franchise.) Russell seems to have quite the distaste for Lawrence's blockbuster roles. He previously told Yahoo Movies that "It was a vacation for her to dive into [her 'American Hustle' character] in the middle of all the other work as Katniss Everdeen [her 'Hunger Games' character]."

As Russell himself seemed to expect, there has already been some concern for the wording of the director's comments about Lawrence's work ethic.

"I think David Russell was trying to raise some legitimate concerns about how young actors are treated by powerful movie executives ... But I’m surprised that a director of David Russell’s calibre doesn’t appear to have taken the time to watch '12 Years a Slave' or else he wouldn’t have been so glib with his comparisons," Aidan McQuade, director of Anti-Slavery International told the Daily Mail. "Indeed if he’s interested I would invite him to join me in visiting India or Nepal to see what real contemporary slavery looks like. Working up to 12 hours a day in a brick kiln for nearly nothing, living in squalid conditions and not being able to leave –- that’s real slavery."

UPDATE: In an email to HuffPost Entertainment, reps for Russell released a statement from the director, in which he apologized for his comments:

"Clearly, I used a stupid analogy in a poor attempt at humor. I realized it the minute I said it and I am truly sorry."

Ichabod Crane In Skinny Jeans on 'Sleepy Hollow': Sign Of The Apocalypse

Since the premiere of "Sleepy Hollow," Ichabod Crane has been running around in modern times wearing clothing that's centuries out of date. This week, he tried something new. Ichabod is a lean man, but it was probably a bit much to think he was ready to be comfortable in skinny jeans!

Upon seeing him, Abbie said, "“Hell hath frozen over.” He couldn't agree more. In fact, he couldn't even sit down. As he put it, "One sign of the impending apocalypse is surely skinny jeans.”

It's those kind of light moments that have made "Sleepy Hollow" one of the most refreshing new shows of the season. Alas, it was too brief for Entertainment Weekly's Hillary Busis. "Like all beautiful moments, our glimpse of Crane clad in modern-day garb -- sorry, finery -- was all too fleeting," she wrote. "Who has time for a chick flick-style shopping montage when there's evil afoot?”

Will we see more modern fashions in the two-hour season finale of "Sleepy Hollow," next Monday at 8 p.m. EST on Fox?

Jennie Runk On What It's Like To Be A Feminist In The Modeling Industry

While we have always loved plus-size model Jennie Runk's outspoken and honest thoughts on body image, our affection for this 25-year-old Georgia native has grown even more with her latest comments about feminism.

Best known for her appearance in H&M's Summer 2013 beachwear campaign, Runk recently sat down with writer Marisa Meltzer and Elle to discuss body image and experiences she encounters as a plus-size model. During the interview, Meltzer asked Runk if she was a feminist -- and her answer could not have been more perfect:
I've always considered myself a feminist. In high school I drove my dad's pickup truck with feminist stickers on the back and bright pink seat covers. My ringtone is Joan Jett's 'Bad Reputation.' I went to Stephens, a women's college, and joined a feminist protest group.

Clearly, Runk walks the walk.

Runk also spoke about the challenges she faces as a feminist in a business that doesn't always share her values:
It was a struggle for me to be in an industry that people blame feminist issues on. There's a very narrow example of what the perfect woman is. But I've got this great career, I love my job, and it's a good living...The biggest thing for women to keep in mind is you can't ever let someone define beauty for you. Look in the mirror and say that this is my definition of perfection.

The world could definitely use a lot more models -- and people -- like Jennie Runk.

How Your Clothes Might Be Hurting Your Body (INFOGRAPHIC)

When it comes to keeping up with the trends, we all seem more than willing to suffer for fashion. Painful stilettos? No problem. Jeans that require a gym membership to peel off? Child's play.

But your fashionable wardrobe might be causing a slew of health problems.

Dangling Heavy Earrings
Aside from the risk of infection, heavy earrings can stretch earlobes over time. They also can get caught, further damaging earlobes.

Heavy Handbag With Thin Straps
When you carry that on-trend, oversized bag, your natural gait is thrown off and your muscles are off-balance, causing one shoulder to hike up and resulting in bad posture. This can lead to stiffness, headaches and neck and back pain.

Constricting Ill-Fitting Bra
Tight bras could prevent you from developing muscle tissue that provides natural support, which may accelerate sagging.

Tight Belts
If cinched too tight, belts can cause pain and tingling, as well as numbness in the legs by compressing the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which runs from the abdomen to the outer thigh.

Wallet In Back Pocket
Sitting on a thick wallet creates a pocket in the muscle lying underneath the wallet, which results in asymmetrical posture, discomfort and pain.

Thong Underwear
Non-breathable materials, like lace, can trap moisture and lead to infections. The thin band can also easily transfer bacteria from fecal matter.

Tight Pants/Skirts
Clothes that are too tight throw you off balance and restrict movement, resulting in poor posture and misalignment of the spine. They can also compress nerves, leading to pain and numbness, and cause yeast infections.

High Heels
Heels shift weight to the balls of feet, putting pressure on the foot and offsetting your balance. As knees and hips are forced forward, you run the risk of hyperextension, ankle sprains, midfoot fractures, neuromas, pinched nerves, bunions and hammertoes.

Curvy Girls Love Sexy Lingerie, Too - These Brands Are Making It Possible

0
0
I spent hours and hours in December browsing the new Valentine's Day and 2014 lingerie catalogs from most of our major lingerie suppliers and definitely saw some exciting trends for 2014. Some I am very enthused about, some not so much. But there are a few that I know will sell well at our store and online. And, more importantly, many of them will actually fit our plus-size customers. We were also fortunate to have a few of the suppliers come and give us an in-person demo of their new plus-size line for 2014. We are very excited! This is the year of the sexy curvy girl, and the new styles prove that.

The dearth of sexy and contemporary clothes for plus size women is well known. This is especially true in the lingerie world. But, to their credit, I have heard from some plus size lingerie suppliers and designers that it is very difficult to design well-fitting plus size lingerie. Their defense is that curvy bodies have curves in so many different places and they say that makes it very difficult to design styles that will fit all curvy women. While one curvy woman who wears a size 22 might have really full breasts, another curvy woman might have smaller cups. Same with the hips, butt and thighs: curvy bodies have so many variations.

But there are some lingerie brands that curvy girls should look out for: We are always thrilled with the lingerie from Shirley of Hollywood and their Intimate Attitudes Plus Size Collection because we can mostly rely on the fact that their patterns are actually designed for the curvy body. That means the seats are designed to have more material to fit around a bigger, curvier bottom. It also means that there is plenty of material in the skirts of the baby dolls and chemises so that they do not ride up on bigger hips and bigger butts. And, we can also rely on the Intimate Attitudes lingerie being made with material that is not itchy or too shiny.

I am tickled pink about a new line of Plus Size dresses from a new Plus Size lingerie supplier called Pink Lipstick Lingerie. We curvy girls are tired of hiding behind big kaftans and robes. We are ready for our time in the sunshine and we are ready to rock the Pink Lipstick "trashy on purpose" dresses that have that ripped up, torn up, club wear look in our bedrooms... and maybe even out to a club! And, what we have found at our store is that Pink Lipstick brand is very stretchy. This is boxed lingerie and super affordable. And, their packaging says their Plus Size styles will fit women up to 2x (about a size 22) we have found that their dresses fit women up to size 3x or even 4x since they are so stretchy. (That's about a size 26/28.)

2013 brought us a brand new line of lingerie from a company called Fantasy Lingerie. They debuted their new "Curve" for Fantasy and it's another box lingerie brand at a very affordable price point. Curve lingerie is cut to fit a variety of sizes and help retailers like me to not have to carry so many part numbers. They make their lingerie in sizes 1x/2x and 3x/4x and we have found that they cut pretty generously and use styles that are more forgiving that work on a variety of bodies.

There will be more "fashion" corsets and bustiers this year, too. We would love for more of the plus size lingerie designers to design more bustiers and corsets that have a longer line. We have a few from Intimate Attitudes that comes down below the belt line. We have found that many of our curvy girl lingerie customers are self-conscious about their lower tummies. Plus, no one ever looks sexy and beautiful cut in half -- which is what many of the "fashion" corsets and bustiers, do. We all want a sleeker and sexy streamlined look. A longer line tends to make the curvy body look more sophisticated and elegant. It elongates the line and makes us look less choppy and therefore more elegant. Well-fitting lingerie gives a woman confidence!

The best is when the corsets have spandex built into them, as our bestselling tapestry corset from Intimate Attitudes does. Because the bustier has the spandex in it, we can cinch all kinds of curvy bodies into it. We hope this will become more common in 2014. And, the other beautiful thing about the spandex is that it can continue to fit a person who goes up and down 20 lbs since it has the lace-up cinch in the back and the spandex.

There will be some losers, I am sure. If the plus size designers are listening... we would like to see more of the micro fiber styles like our pinstriped best seller from Dream Girls Lingerie and our black and hot pink bestseller chemise from Intimate Attitudes. We really find it a challenge to keep our store stocked with these two styles. We find that once women try them on, they buy them. The material is that amazing and forgiving. It feels great to the person wearing these baby dolls, plus it feels great to the person cuddling with them.

There is one more brand I want to mention to our plus size readers out there. We have found that all of the lingerie from a Canadian designer called Coquette cuts their plus size lingerie generously. We have even found their styles in 3/4x to fit our customers who are 5/6x. A 3/4x in the Coquette line roughly translates to a dress size 24/26. And, we have noticed that they seem to always add a layer to the bottom of their dresses which gives us curvy girls with larger hips and back sides more coverage for our booty! The 2014 Coquette collection will include the big winners from 2013 and even new sexy styles that fit well on a plus sized body with curves.

And, lastly, another exciting trend for 2014 is the new and exciting stocking styles and colors coming from Kixies Thigh Highs. Kixies are thigh highs that actually fit curvy thighs and they also never roll down or make your thighs look like they are in sausage casings. We fell in love with these Kixies Thigh Highs in 2013, but we are very excited for their new colors and styles they're introducing in 2014. They're not just for curvy women, but it's especially exciting to have thigh high options that do work for plus size women. There are very few out there and even fewer plus size garter belts to hold up the thigh highs that are not designed to stay up on their own (stay-ups is what they are called).

That is why the Kixies are so innovative. They do not require a garter belt. They stay up on their own. And they do not make your inner thighs look like sausages and they do not give you thigh muffin tops. Plus, their first six styles were all in the black family, but the brand will be bringing some lighter colors to market this spring designed to be strong enough to wear daily, not just for special occasions.

As I love to say, stop hiding, curvy girls! The designers are making bolder, sexier styles and they are meant for you to wear to make yourself feel sexy or to wear for your lover. Stop buying what the mainstream media is selling. All women are sexy and beautiful and all women deserve to have clothes that give them that confidence.

Love, Lust, and the Pursuit of Happiness

One day, I fell in like. We can probably thank Facebook for claiming the relationship status of "like" in our vocabulary.

Falling in like is a safe place to start. Usually it begins with a spark of mutual attraction, call it chemistry if you like, gets solidified by conversations that last for hours, and is accompanied by a flurry of text messages. Like, love, and lust are four-letter words that can get confused with each other, so let's address them all for a moment.

When you fall in like, you typically have a crush on someone. You're possibly smitten and can't stop thinking about the other person. This is the infatuation stage of the relationship. Suddenly music sounds better on the radio, you have a natural glow about you, and you project to the future. Often, after a few weeks, the temporary high will wear off, a person's true colors come out, and they no longer seem perfect to you.

The thing is, we don't live in a perfect world. Those who define the success of a relationship based on perfection are destined for failure. One person can't keep the act up of being in the happy place 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Without the ability to communicate about both the good and bad things that are happening in your world, the relationship is nothing more than a fantasy. Going from zero to 360 is like a drug. It starts out as a quick high and can crash just as quickly.

Once you add sex to the equation, if you connect in the bedroom, the relationship turns from "like" to "lust." Your head is in the clouds as you think about how to satisfy each other. From wearing sexy lingerie to being a Geisha in the bedroom, lust is not love, my friends. Lust is physical and can backfire if you think it's the pathway to true love.

In the lust phase, you're exploring each other physically, emotionally, and intellectually to see if you're compatible. The desire is so strong that when you're apart, you're counting the minutes, hours, or days until you'll be in each other's arms again. Talking on the phone, sending flirty texts to each other, emails, Skype dates, they all contribute to the getting to know you phase. This phase takes time. If the relationship is based on lust only, it will fizzle the moment someone is knocked off the pedestal. If this happens to you, realize that you didn't do anything wrong. You were in a relationship that didn't have the opportunity to withstand the test of time. Being in "like" for a longer period of time, will help a relationship develop naturally and in a healthy way. A relationship built on friendship and respect and one that includes a bad hair day, the flu, or a rough day at work is a relationship that goes past the lust phase. Those who stay in lust are looking for a constant state of euphoria. This isn't realistic.

Can lust turn to love? Absolutely, as long as your values are in sync, you take the time to get to know each other, and you stand up for yourself and don't become a doormat. Women who have minds of their own, often fear opening up to say what's on their mind. This is a mistake. Conflict is natural in a relationship. It's how you handle conflict and disagreements as a couple that will show if you're able to be in a true partnership that leads to love.

Many misinterpret love for everlasting love. It's not uncommon for someone to say "I love you" to just get sex. Others will say, "I love you," only with the desire to hear it be said in return. Some feel the word love means forever, which isn't always the case. Those known as classic players or pick-up artists (PUA's), know how to play the game well. They hunt and seek with the message that they're looking for the pursuit of happiness and love. Often they'll tell you that they've never felt this way about a woman before you. They toss out the word love so easily and believably, when you just might be a girl in rotation. I talked about this in great length in my book The Perils of Cyber-Dating, where I described the classic player, who was addicted to his online dating membership.

I once heard someone say, as soon as he knows you love him, it's over. I was startled at hearing that. Shouldn't someone be honest and genuine with his or her feelings? Is love really just a game and once it's achieved, "game over?" Then the Fleetwood Mac song "Dreams" came on the radio and I heard Stevie Nicks singing, "Players only love you when they're playing," and I paused and gave it more thought.

Still, I believe that true love is possible, but it comes along with a deep friendship that grows. I know first-hand that it's possible to fall in love at first sight, second sight, or over time. I encourage you to read and understand these different relationship stages, take your time in getting to know someone, and keep your heart open, even if you've been disappointed in the past.

Wishing you much love and joy in cyberspace, or wherever you may roam.

Taylor Swift, Jared Leto Romance Rumors Start To Fly After Golden Globes Party

0
0
Like most dating rumors in Hollywood, rumblings that Taylor Swift and Jared Leto were making googly eyes at one another started with nothing more than an innocent photo.

Swift, 24, and Leto, 42, were spotted briefly conversing at the InStyle And Warner Bros. party after Leto nabbed the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor on Jan. 12.

The pair chatted in close proximity to one another at the crowded bash, which in tabloid-speak translates to "flirting" and "cozying up."

The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern snapped a photo of Leto whispering into Swift's ear, which is swiftly making the round. While the two do indeed look cozy, the reality of the encounter is something entirely different. Stern wrote that Swift spent most of the night being introduced to a "line of stars," and that after Leto whispered into her ear, he handed her his trophy and shouted, "This is f--king crazy."

While that doesn't exactly sound like sweet nothings to us, upping the ante of romance rumors is Leto's own Instagram photo of he and Swift at the party, which he captioned, "Me. Taylor Swift. Golden Globes. xo."

Finding Your Signature Fragrance

0
0
Finding your signature fragrance is a journey. I'd like to think there are fragrances for every stage of our lives, and the choices are endless. Fragrance also carries a sort of sentiment, as I remember my first ever real perfume was Clinique Happy. Now every time I smell it, I think of being a teenager again. *Shudders*

Now that I'm a working girl (excuse me, working woman) in New York City, finding a signature fragrance has become more of a hunt than a journey. I've decided on Viva La Juicy as the scent for my early twenties; it's feminine, not overwhelming, has an amazing bottle that looks great on my vanity and super easy to layer.

Here are five things I've learned about picking a perfume that's perfect for any occasion:

#1: This tip is one of, if not the most important of them all: Please do not buy fragrances before you try them. And I do mean TRY. Wear it for a couple of days -- most perfume counters have samples, so this shouldn't be a problem. This way, if a fragrance doesn't make all of the points on your checklist, you don't waste a fortune.

#2: Anything with the word "sexy" in the description or name should be saved for a night out. (But if you have an office crush, spritz on, girl!). It's great to carry your sexy fragrance in a rollerball or travel atomizer, and you can easily switch from business to casual.

#3: Layering is essential to ensure lasting power. I'll layer body sprays with my daytime fragrance to make it last longer just as long as they have similar notes or undertones. You can also layer essential oils (organic/health foods stores carry these) on your pulse points to make your scent last all day.

#4: For sweet, floral fragrance lovers like myself, look for perfumes with hints of vanilla and caramel that are not too abrasive. They're ideal for spritzing on for a regular workday or brunch.

#5: Sometimes you need -- as a friend of mine refers to it -- a pantsuit, which is a muskier scent that commands attention from both men and women. Key notes to look for in a fragrance like this are musk, oak and citrus. And they are often described as an "oriental" or "woodsy" fragrance. These notes are not only heavy and long-lasting on the skin, but are also not as polarized.
