8 Love Letters That Remind Sexual Assault Survivors They Are Not Alone

$

"You are not what they took from you."

So begins one of the love letters a survivor of sexual assault wrote to herself on the Tumblr #SurvivorLoveLetter. Launched on Valentine's Day by one of the co-founders of sex-education company imMEDIAte Justice Tani Ikeda, the #SurvivorLoveLetter Tumblr offers a platform for people to write letters to survivors of sexual assault to remind them they are beautiful, strong and -- most of all -- loved.

"#Survivorloveletter is a call to survivors of sexual violence and our loved ones to publicly celebrate our lives," Ikeda writes on the Tumblr's homepage. "By telling our stories we seek to build knowledge and reflect on the ways we heal ourselves and our communities."

(Story continues below.)
pink

Ikeda told The Huffington Post in an email that Valentine's Day is always hard for her because Feb. 14 was the date she was sexually assaulted. "I imagined what it would mean for my younger self to wake up on Valentine's Day and read message after message of public support for surviving," Ikeda said. "That's when I knew I wanted to create #Survivorloveletter."

"After surviving my rape I spent 10 more years surviving chronic depression and a perpetual feeling that I had to continue to fight for my life," Ikeda told HuffPost. "This is my survivor love letter. Don't give up on your own happiness."

The letters contain powerful messages of encouragement from relatives and friends of survivors, and some of the most impactful letters are written by survivors to themselves. People submit their letters or images of handwritten letters to Tumblr or Ikeda's personal email address. Ikeda said she's received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the project, with many people thanking her for creating such an important and safe space for survivors.

"That type of support and acknowledgement from loved ones of survivors felt really important to me as well because often times the milestones of healing go under the radar," Ikeda said. "Part of breaking the stigma of shame surrounding being a rape survivor is for others to acknowledge that it happened and honor what that journey looks like.

"After internalizing so much self hate perhaps the most radical thing I can do is love myself," Ikeda said.

Does Going Gray Make Your Appearance Sparkle or Dull?

$

To go gray or not to go gray?

Leaving your hair to naturally go gray is a very personal choice -- there are many factors you may consider as inputs into your ultimate decision. Some may include:

  • Your lifestyle needs and wants

  • Time and financial commitment for upkeep requirements of hair colour

  • Health and environmental considerations

  • Does going gray align with your personality and vision for your appearance?

Have you ever considered also factoring in whether going gray aligns with your optimal hair color palette to give off your best? How can you tell if your natural gray hair color will...

- Make your appearance sparkle, be vibrant, harmonious and diminish skin imperfections such as wrinkles.

OR

- Make your appearance dull, worn, outdated, even older, unbalanced and magnify skin imperfections such as wrinkles.

Here are two easy steps to reveal whether going gray may add a sparkle to your appearance OR make you look duller.

1. Determine If Your Natural Gray Aligns With Your Skin Undertone - Your skin undertone is the hue that shows through the surface of your skin. It is best seen in natural lighting. Your skin undertone can be either cool, warm or neutral.

When the undertone of your hair color is aligned with your skin undertone, your hair color choice more than likely will add a sparkle to your appearance. This is why knowing your undertone is key when choosing a hair color for you.

Most natural gray hair that has not been influenced by external factors such as environment, hair products etc. has a cool undertone.

To determine your skin undertone and whether your natural gray hair color aligns with your skin undertone, there are a few options you may consider for support -- a color analysis consultation with a trained professional, consulting with your hair colorist or completing online do-it-yourself methods.

2. Determine If Gray is in Your Optimal Hair Color Palette - A color analysis consultation or a consultation with a hair colorist trained in or with significant experience determining your best hair colors will guide you on what your optimal hair colors are.

If your natural gray hair coloring is aligned with the undertone, value and intensity of colors in your optimal hair color palette, going gray is more than likely suited to your coloring and will add a sparkle to your appearance. You may want to review periodically as more gray hair grows in.

So what do you do if your natural gray hair coloring is not aligned with the undertone, value and intensity of colors in your optimal hair color palette?

  • If you still want to go gray - it is quite possible adding a toner to your gray hair to better align your hair's undertone with your skin undertone may just do the trick to add some sparkle to you. Discuss this option with your hair colorist.

  • If you've decided not to go gray - aligning your hair color choice with the undertone, value and intensities of your optimal hair color palette is the best option for your appearance to look healthy, vibrant, harmonious, younger and diminish skin imperfections such as wrinkles. For example, if a color analysis consultation determines you are a True Autumn -- your skin undertone is warm and your optimal hair color palette will include warm browns, copper and reds.

Your hair is one of the first things people notice about you. Does going gray add a sparkle to your appearance? There is no time like the present to find out and factor into your "going-gray-decision" whether or not your natural gray hair color aligns with your optimal hair color palette.

I hope this blog inspires you to wear your authenticity!

The runways at New York Fashion Week were chock full of 1970s-inspired looks . To complement the sequin gowns, chunky tweed jackets and graphic accessories, hairstylists recreated seventies 'dos with modern finishes (i.e. softer side parts and double-twisted top knots) and products that provided enough hold without weighing hair down.

The good news for us is that the hair looks in particular are fairly easy to replicate on your own. Here's how to copy them.

Loose And Flowing Locks At Karen Walker

karen walker fall 2015 hair

Get the look: Blow dry Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray into hair and mist Thickening Dryspun Finish onto locks to bring out natural texture. (Tip: For women with thick hair, blow dry with Prep.) Create a center or natural side part, then saturate bangs section with Does It All. Use a 1 and 1/4-inch curling iron to make loose barrel curls around the face. Gently fingercomb through strands to finish.

Sleek Topknots At Tracy Reese

tracy reese fall 2015

Get the look: Before blowdrying, prep hair with SheaMoisture Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smooth & Repair Blow Out Cream to protect and add shine to hair. Using a paddle brush, dry hair brushing away from the face. Massage Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé between hands and use to gather hair into a severe ponytail at the crown. Spritz Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smooth & Repair High Shine Glosser onto a paddle brush and smooth hair. Wrap wire around the base of the ponytail and twist so that the wire is hidden in the center of the tail. Twist the ponytail around the wire until it makes a tight spiraled rope, diagonally away from the head. Secure the ends with bobby pins. Slick back any loose hairs with an edge control and set the style in place with a moisturizing mist.

Super Straight Hair At Ohne Titel

ohne titel fall 2015 hair

Get the look: Spray roots with Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray and blow dry with finger tips. Smooth Thickening Full Form Mousse on dry hair from mid-length to ends, and then use a round brush to blow dry sections of hair straight but maintaining volume. Finish by adding loose waves around the face with a curling iron and brush out.

Teased And Textured Ponytails At Omondi

omondi fall 2015 hair

Get the look: Blow dry hair and use a flat iron to straighten with Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray to protect the hair from heat damage. Then with precision add extensions to give it length. Make a center part and spritz with Oribe Superfine Hairspray before gathering it in a tight ponytail with an elastic bungee. Pin set curl the hair six inches away from the base of the ponytail and then press the base a flat iron. Allow curls to cool for 15 minutes. Remove hair pins and brushed out curls lightly with a paddle brush. To complete the style, coat the hairline and ponytail base with L'Oréal Elnett Satin Strong Hold Hair Spray.

Stevie Nicks-esque Hair At Reem Acra

reem acra fall 2015 hair

Get the look: Starting with freshly-shampooed hair, make a clean middle part and rough dry hair with finger tips using a blow-dryer with a sock diffuser to make sure the hair is not too fluffy. Next, come through the hair with a wide-tooth comb to smooth out any tangles. Starting from mid-shaft to ends, and then from roots to ends, spray hair with René Furterer VOLUMEA volumizing conditioning spray - no rinse and comb product through the hair. Keeping the hair at the crown flat, take random sections from the back and gently twist them to bring out the texture. Use the palms of your hands to flatten hair at the crown and push it behind the ears. Add a dab of René Furterer VEGETAL SCULPTING GEL for extra hold.

Gypsy Hair At Rodebjer

rodebjer fall 2015 hair

Get the look: Apply Purely Perfect Smooth Finish on top of hair and then run fingers through to the ends, giving it a natural texture. Then flat iron front section of strands, and braid back section underneath to make hair appear thinner on the ends. Complete the look by blow-drying hair and allowing pieces to fall in front of face.

Carson Kressley On How He Felt 'Flawed' For Being Gay (VIDEO)

With his one-of-a-kind personality, trademark humor and bold sense of style, Carson Kressley was destined to be a star. But as outgoing and confident as the celebrity stylist and Emmy-winning TV personality is today, he admits that childhood insecurities about his sexuality almost prevented him from doing what he was born to do.

In an interview with Oprah.com for the web series "I Am," Kressley opened up about finding his authentic self in this funny and touching look inward. "You know what, I'm a dreamer," he says.

Though he didn't know how it would translate into a career, his passions were evident from day one. "I've always had an aesthetic," Kressley says. "And I knew that clothes were important and I knew that how you presented yourself or your home, or anything, was important. And it was important to me to make it the best it could be. I think it's in your DNA and even though you don't know who you are or who you're going to be, that's kind of your muse."

As one of the founding members of the Fab Five on "Queer Eye," you might think that Kressley has always been open and unapologetic about his sexuality. In reality, the style guru says his confidence came with time.

"I always felt very flawed because I had this big, deep, dark, dirty secret that I was gay," Kressley says. "I thought that it was going to hold me back and I couldn't be who I really was. For a long time I wasn't authentic because I was afraid to be me. "

Coming out sounded terrifying. "I was like, 'Oh my gosh, when I tell my family maybe they won't love me anymore,'" he says.

Though Kressley was afraid he wouldn't be accepted, the exact opposite turned out to be true. "The thing that I thought was my Achilles heel wound up being the thing that made me successful," he says.

While being authentic is Kressley's key to success, his relentless work ethic also can't be denied. "You have to work hard every day," he says. The Pennsylvania native says his go-getter attitude served him well when he was just starting out.

"Moving to New York City is very daunting and I was very scared, but I didn't let fear hold me back," he says. "Sometimes you have to jump off the diving board into the deep end. "

"It was not easy," Kressly admits. "I remember going to the Chinese restaurant with 14 dimes because lo Mein noodles — plain, no meat — were $1.40. And that was all the money I had, because you were paying your rent and perhaps buying a nice pair of shoes. You hang in there and you make it work, and that's kind of what I love about New York City. You have to be ambitious and you have to be creative and you have to be scrappy."

And as Kressly points out -- who doesn't want to be scrappy?

Take a look back at one of our all-time favorite Carson Kressley moments: A sexy mom gets a memorable makeunder.

"50 Shades of Cool"...natural, from nature, modern hair!

Grey? Yes, Grey.

Or, if you prefer...Silver Slate, Vintage Platinum, Icy White, Blue Silver, Cool Violet, Smokey Blonde, Smoldering Bombshell!

Vogue has promoted the look and I agree: grey doesn't mean grandma anymore.

This coming-of-age color is modern, edgy and space-age. It's all in the execution.

Will grey work for you?

With any look, what's important is that your hair be shiny and healthy and have a modern cut so that your hair can move. When your hair shines and moves, it attracts...and attraction is what it's all about.

To take on this 21st century style, consider a visit to a hair color expert. Use organic hair color creams to insure shine and elasticity. Add a bit of bright color to add a modern edge remembering less is more.

Make a visit to an image consultant to pick clothing colors to complement your hair color, body type, and skin tone. Then, upgrade your wardrobe to include the latest styles.

Now, add some new activities to get your body moving; upgrade your diet; make a few of those other changes you've been considering.

You'll create enough excitement in your life to make you blush, resulting with a wholesome, healthy, happy aura that sells any look. You will be the celebrity in life, the leader of many and the trademark of women who make a difference in this world.

Many actresses have portrayed Marilyn Monroe, from Nicole Kidman to Lindsay Lohan. And if there were to be another film or magazine shoot that pays homage to the blonde bombshell, Margot Robbie should be up for the role.

While making the promo rounds in Italy for her latest film "Focus," Robbie styled her hair in a classic '50s look. The loose barrel curls fell beautifully against her black cropped sweater, and the soft side part gave way to her glowing skin.

This Is The Most Stylish Hat Of The Season

Most people think that winter is synonymous with cozy beanies, but we're here to let you in on a little secret that most of the fashion world already knows. There is a better headwear choice out there: the wide-brim hat.

At first, it may not seem like the most logical choice for freezing temps, but the brim on the hat keeps snow out of your eyes when it's really coming down.

Photographers Melodie Jeng and Shriya Samavai were out on the streets during New York Fashion Week to capture every street style star who wore floppy hats outside the tents.

We have a feeling that next winter, knit hats might be a thing of the past.

Apologies for my lack of posts -- I have been rather distracted with pregnancy and the birth of my adorable little baby boy. It has been a wonderful time, but, whilst being exhausted, I did not have many exciting outings to report on. Until now. I am back, and it's London Fashion Week which so far has been epic.

Kicking off with Naomi Campbell's Fashion for Relief show at Somerset House. A star-studded line up, with faces from stage to screen, graced the runway to raise funds to fight Ebola. I loved the party atmosphere, as did the models, who broke into dance mid strut down the catwalk -- Jourdan Dunn and Vivienne Westwood to name but a few.

Meryl Streep's Oscar Dress 2015 Includes A Blazer, Which She Rocks, Of Course

Meryl Streep always owns the red carpet. She's practically a walking masterpiece who solidifies grace and sophistication, and that theory stood true on this year's Oscars red carpet.

The Academy Award winner wore a skirt and blazer set, that just trumps all of the gowns out there. Although we love the belt and lovely white shell, it's the slit in Streep's skirt that exudes sex appeal, which Streep's nailed down her entire career. Once again, she proves that she's a goddess on earth.

Streep is one of the most nominated actors in Hollywood, and tonight she adds the nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Into The Woods.

Do you love Streep's look?

Keira Knightley was positively glowing on the Oscars red carpet Sunday night in Hollywood.

The "Imitation Game" star, who is expecting her first child, looked stunning in a Valentino gown embroidered with delicate florals and French words.

Knightley, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Morten Tyldum-directed film, recently chatted with Ellen DeGeneres about being pregnant during awards season.

“My husband’s having a great time. I’m eating for two and he’s drinking for two,” she said. “There’s a lot of free champagne, so he thinks because I’m not drinking the free champagne, he has to. So, all of it.”
