Andy Cohen Jokes That Ryan Seacrest Had Former 'American Idol' Co-Host Brian Dunkleman Killed

On Thursday night's episode of "Watch What Happens Live," host Andy Cohen was trying to get Kelly Clarkson to Plead The Fifth when he joked:

"Kelly easily withstood the pressure-cooker that was 'American Idol,' before Ryan Seacrest had co-host Brian Dunkleman killed."

Co-host? Dunkleman? We had to access the parts of our brains reserved for useless pop culture knowledge to vaguely recall that, oh yeah, there was another guy who held a microphone and used to stand on stage next to Seacrest during Season 1 of "American Idol."

That guy was Brian Dunkleman. He is alive and "still doing stuff," as BuzzFeed put it last year.

Talk about a blast from the past!

The women of Twitter are having a rough week. Audrey Farnsworth was definitely struggling when she tweeted, "Every day I accidentally play a game called 'what's the stupidest sentence I can say to another human person today.'" We totally feel you.

Allison Raskin was not in the mood, tweeting, "You know those people who are emotionally shut down and closed off? They've really got it figured out." Ugh, truth.

Move over, Kim Kardashian. You just got out-selfied.

American Eagle, Aerie and famed photographer Gray Malin recruited over 1,000 women, including Mae Whitman and DJ/lifestyle guru Hannah Bronfman, in an attempt to create a record-breaking "world's largest unretouched selfie" Saturday in Miami Beach. Each participant is wearing clothing emblazoned with #AerieREAL, the brand’s mantra. While the photo was snapped on the ground, Malin simultaneously captured the moment from a helicopter.

The photo falls in line with Aerie's dedication to ditching Photoshop, celebrating natural beauty and empowering women to be real.

Aerie has continually pushed its message through ad campaigns. This event symbolizes not only a shift toward inclusion in the fashion industry, but also the impact deciding to go sans Photoshop has had on consumers. Jenny Altman, fit and style expert for Aerie, explains:

What better way to make a statement about self expression than taking a selfie? We are so excited to host an iconic pop cultural moment, influencing women around the world to love themselves even when they are the most exposed -- in a swimsuit. This photo is a celebration of the change that has happened in the fashion industry and society in general. Girls are strong and confident, whatever their shape, size or style.

There's nothing we love more than seeing our favorite celebs rock a bright bold lipstick. And this week those painted pouts got the high gloss treatment from the likes of Olivia Palermo, Kate Upton, Uzo Aduba and more. Despite the fact that there are still sheets of snow outside, we're going to take this cheerful beauty moment as a sign that spring is just around the corner. Fingers crossed!

In the meantime, check out those lovely lipped ladies and see which other celebrities made this week's best beauty list.

Olivia Palermo

We're not sure what's more impressive, the subtle shine of Ms. Palermo's berry colored lips or the fact her beautifully wind swept hair isn't getting stuck on them. Either way this look is perfection. Plus, we can't stop staring at those Westward Leaning mirrored sunglasses.

Uzo Aduba

You can't go wrong with soft tousled curls, a glossy red lip, and a megawatt smile. The "Orange Is The New Black" actress was spotted sporting that winning combination at an Emily's List gala this week.

The Fashion Industry Is Getting More Accepting. Here's Proof

The fashion industry has made great strides to become a more inclusive environment, particularly in the past year. In the last 356 days we have seen countless initiatives and projects that honor women of all ages, races and backgrounds. From the spike in mature models in fashion ads to the increased diversity in campaigns to the inclusion of plus-size models in more magazines, we have a lot to be happy about.

In honor of International Women's Day today on March 8, we sought out the five most uplifting fashion moments for women from the past year. Here is what made us smile:

Dove's "Love Your Curls" Campaign Lionized Girls' Curly Hair

"This Dove beauty campaign was a pivotal force in encouraging young girls to not only love their curls, but reinforce the natural hair movement that has being going strong for years. As a child, there were very few images of women who looked like me on TV or in fashion magazines. Seeing a major brand like Dove promote not only self-acceptance but great hair care will have a profound impact on this generation." -- Dana Oliver, Executive Fashion & Beauty Editor

"Beyond Classically Beautiful" Photo Project Celebrated Black Women Of All Shades

bcb

"These amazing images were created in response to a New York Times reporter who called Viola Davis "darker-skinned and less classically beautiful than" other black women in Hollywood. The cringe-worthy statement sparked plenty of outrage and thankfully journalist Abi Ishola turned something so negative into a positive with the 'Beyond Classically Beautiful' photo project. By capturing portraits of black women of all shades, shapes and personal styles, Ishola is helping show the world that black is and will always be beautiful." -- Julee Wilson, Fashion & Beauty Editor

Joan Didion Starred In Céline's Spring 2015 Campaign

JOAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A photo posted by Man Repeller (@manrepeller) on

"This year, we saw more mature models in fashion campaigns than ever before, and in an industry that usually celebrates youth, this is represents a major turning point. Though I was thrilled when I found out about Julia Roberts for Givenchy, Iris Apfel for Alexis Bittar and Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent, I was ecstatic when I saw that Joan Didion was the new face of Céline. Not only did the storied French label celebrate the beauty of an 80-year-old woman, they also recognized someone who is know for her brains, too." -- Michelle Persad, Fashion Editor

The First Model With Down Syndrome Walked During New York Fashion Week

"People with disabilities, whether it be physical or cognitive, have long been excluded from the 'normal' spectrum of society, including the fashion industry. However, things are changing on the runway. This past New York Fashion Week, Jamie Brewer was the first model with a cognitive disability to walk the catwalk and just last year, there was the model, who uses a wheelchair, featured in Carrie Hammer's show. I hope these amazing moments continue to happen, and break down the stigma associated with disabilities." -- Chanel Parks, Associate Style Editor

The First Plus-Size Model Appeared In The Pirelli Calendar

"It's hard to pick just one exciting plus-size fashion moment from the past year, but seeing Candice Huffine become the first plus-size model to star in Pirelli's iconic annual calendar impacted me the most. The fact that a woman with curves was included in something this conventionally 'sexy' proves that standards of beauty are shifting, and that the industry is finally acknowledging what many people have known all along -- curves are here to stay. " -- Jamie Feldman, Associate Style Editor

Apple Watch Faces Major Challenge In Fashion Industry

$

0

By Nandita Bose and Piya Sinha-Roy
CHICAGO/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Apple CEO Tim Cook summed up the problem during a conversation with sales staff at a London Apple Store: "We've never sold anything as a company that people could try on before."
With the expected launch next month of the Apple Watch, the company’s first new product in five years, Apple will be stepping into new territory.
To conquer the marketplace, the watch will have to appeal not only as a gadget but as a fashion statement, a fact tacitly acknowledged by Apple's decision to launch its advertising campaign with a 12-page insert in the March issue of Vogue.
The company isn’t talking about plans for marketing the Apple Watch in advance of it's much-touted "Spring Forward" event on Monday, but it clearly intends to keep a tight grip on initial sales and distribution, leaving many retailers guessing about when -- or if -- they'll be able to sell it.
Sources with direct knowledge of the matter said that Best Buy Co Inc, one of the largest sellers of Apple products, may not get the watch at launch time, though the company wouldn't comment on the situation.
Other large retailers, including Macy's, Saks 5th Avenue, Bloomingdales and Barney's said they had no immediate plans to carry the watch. Target and Nordstrom, along with all the major phone carriers, declined to comment on their plans, though a source with knowledge of the situation said Nordstrom has engaged in discussions with Apple.
"Apple is being cautious. There are too many unknowns around how this product will perform," said Van Baker, research vice-president, technology research firm Gartner Inc.
That might mean restricting initial sales to company stores, where Apple has complete control over the experience and staff can be specially trained to sell the watch, Baker said.
Apple's Cook seems very aware of the challenge. The Telegraph, which sent a reporter with the CEO to the company's Covent Garden store, reported that he explained to the staff that selling the watch might require "tweaking the experience in the store."
In the absence of hard information about what the tweaks might look like, speculation has been intense. The Washington Post last week suggested that Apple might add carpeting and mirrors and change store lighting to enhance the watch-buying experience.
Media outlets and Websites have also posited that the watch will be offered at special pop-up stores installed at luxury retailers such as Selfridges in London and Colette in Paris.
Apple hosted a private event at Colette last September, at which guests were able to try on the watch, but a spokesman for Colette declined to comment on whether the store would carry it.
Until now, wearable gadgets have not been big sellers for technology companies. Rival products such as Samsung's Gear watches have sold poorly.
Apple hopes to change that, but it is still a big if whether the watch will appeal to buyers seeking a fashion accessory, especially if it needs to be upgraded every few years like Apple's phones, tablets and computers.
"It could do wonders for the watch market if it means people might wear watches again, but realistically, there are a lot of doubts," said Eric Wilson, fashion news director of InStyle.
"Fashion customers are more skeptical than anyone, so Apple has picked a tough crowd."

This Man Proposed To His Girlfriend Every Single Day For A Year

Talk about dedication! One seriously romantic guy named Dean Smith created a proposal video in which he popped the question to his girlfriend every day for an entire year.

It was last January when Smith said he realized he wanted to be with his girlfriend Jennifer Kessel forever. So he came up with a sweet plan to show his devotion. For 365 consecutive days, he recorded a video of himself holding up a white board with a proposal message and the date, while going about various parts of his day -- eating breakfast, working, hanging out with the dog, showering, brushing his teeth, etc.

"I knew that Jennifer was a fan of proposal videos on YouTube and would tear up at the sincerity and thoughtfulness of each proposal," Smith told The Huffington Post. "She showed several of them to me, and I decided that I wanted to make her tear up to her own proposal."

On January 8, 2015, Kessel's 26th birthday, Smith unveiled the video during a family trip to Aruba. He had her family lead her down to a special chair on the beach where she was presented with the video. After it was over, Smith appeared next to her on the beach and got down on one knee in front of a group of onlookers to make it official.

"The thoughtfulness that went into making this video is truly beyond any words that I have," Kessel told HuffPost Weddings. "When I turned around and saw Dean standing in front of me, we both broke down in tears."

Yes, the video is long, but Smith's enthusiasm makes it worth your while.

Where Are All the Beautiful Mastectomy Bras?

$
0
0
I found plenty of beautiful mastectomy bras on display at the latest annual lingerie trade show.

Well-known brands like Amoena, Anita Care, and Royce, showed off their latest fashions for women whose bodies have been changed by breast cancer surgeries.

2015-03-07-1425691592-8550807-IMG_2479.JPG

These bigger lingerie names design pocketed bras used to hold breast forms, or a breast prosthesis. The materials take into consideration the needs of more sensitive, post-surgical bodies, even those who have undergone breast reconstruction. Some brand collections even offer stylish shape wear, active wear and swimwear.

2015-03-07-1425691642-1597147-IMG_2467.jpg

So why don't you find the latest and greatest in beautiful mastectomy bras at your local retailer? There are a few reasons, and most have to do with the way these products have historically been marketed and sold to women.

2015-03-07-1425691698-980568-IMG_2472.JPG

Some 40 years ago, breast cancer wasn't a topic you found wrapped up in pretty pink ribbons. Women who had a mastectomy, like my mother, were sent to medical supply houses to order breast prostheses and a pocketed bra. There wasn't much to choose from when it came to bra style, color or fabric.

2015-03-07-1425691745-3279328-IMG_2476.JPG

Lingerie retailers face more complex fit issues when selling post-mastectomy products. It's not just the scar tissue or individual surgical sites involved, it's also the size and type of prosthetic a woman buys and wears. Some are heavy or lighter, and they're sold in numeric sizes, not like alphabet cups bras. To give you an idea of the complexity of this task, Amoena requires a minimum of 500 hours of special training to qualify as one of their certified mastectomy bra fitters.

There's also the matter of medical insurance reimbursement, at least in the U.S. Some cover breast forms plus an annual number of pocketed bras. Others only pay for forms. This can be confusing both for the customer buying, and the retailer selling, mastectomy products.

A few department stores, like Nordstrom, and online and brick and mortar boutiques, specialize in fitting mastectomy bras. But each site and store carry a different inventory of sizes and styles.

2015-03-07-1425691145-450872-IMG_2474.JPG

The problem seems to be getting harder-to-fit lingerie products into the hands of women who need, and can afford, them. Any company in the business of selling mastectomy products must factor in returns and access to a fit specialist. Customers who've just gone through a difficult medical diagnosis and recovery may not be aware of what's available, either.

Consumers interested in more variety have to take the initiative to get these prettier pieces stocked on lingerie shelves or web pages. Pretty mastectomy lingerie does exist. It just might take a little time to find it.

2015-03-07-1425691852-503637-IMG_2469.JPG

There's no lack of interest in providing women with beautiful post-mastectomy alternatives in lingerie and swimwear. New brands pop up on the market every year. Even those not in the mastectomy biz now offer pocketed bra designs. UK Maternity brand Lorna Drew just introduced two gorgeous styles. Marlies Dekkers adapted their iconic Dame de Paris bra style with pockets for forms, a few years ago.

What do you think of some of these mastectomy lingerie designs? Do you have any post-mastectomy lingerie resources you'd like to share?

Sick Teen Says Yes To The Perfect Dress In Sweet Prom Surprise

Visiting the doctor has become the norm for Abby Gladin, who has lived with Crohn’s disease for 10 years, though a recent visit proved to be completely out of the ordinary -- in the best way possible.

The 17-year-old left a recent appointment to find her mom, aunt and cousins waiting for her. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta arranged a prom shopping adventure for Abby, and her family was there to help her find the perfect dress.

“I want my dress to be something that you would see on the red carpet,” she told 11Alive.com.

The hospital arranged a car from Uber to pick Abby up and take her to Miz Scarlett’s dress boutique where she could pick out the dress of her dreams for free.

While some dresses didn’t work for Abby because of her colostomy, which connects the colon to the surface of the abdomen, when she finally found the one, her mother was brought to tears.

To top off the shopping excursion, Miss Georgia stopped by with Miss Colorado causing Abby to shed a few tears of her own. The teen even had the chance to wear Miss Georgia's crown.

Though Abby has a major surgery planned after the school year ends, she has something to look forward to in the future. Thanks to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, her prom will certainly be picture perfect.

Newly blonde Kim Kardashian is in Paris for Fashion Week, which means she's wearing some outrageous outfits. But Monday's look was more like something off the Hot Topic sales rack than anything else.

Photographers spotted the reality star and husband Kanye West leaving the Jean Paul Gaultier store, and we just do not understand her outfit.

The 34-year-old looked bizarre in a pinstripe button-down shirt and matching blazer, which she paired with a wool skirt that looked more like a cardigan with the sleeves cut off. She finished off the look with black leather, thigh-high peep-toe boots:

The Tastemaker: Blogger Tommy Lei on His NYFW

$

I have always dreamed of going to N.Y.C. Fashion Week, and while I have had opportunities to go, the scheduling Gods have just never been with me on this one. The second best thing to being there is to live vicariously through Tommy Lei of My Belonging. He describes himself as a Styleteller, and I love his style stories. He was born in Hong Kong but is based in L.A., although he is a globetrotter and often comes to N.Y.C. Definitely more fashion-forward than I am, he inspires me to be bold and step out of my self-imposed fashion boundaries once in a while.

Here are his stories from Fashion Week.

1. What is your background and how did you get to be a "regular" at Fashion Week?

My name is Tommy Lei, the Styleteller behind MYBELONGING -- a high-fashion menswear and personal lifestyle site with an emphasis on intimate dining experiences and travel. I initially started it as an outlet to provide more meaning towards investment items in relation to personal style and identity -- hence the name MYBELONGING. That's how I pretty much came to be a regular at New York Fashion Week the past three (now four) seasons.

2015-03-06-1425672279-2513862-mybelongingtommyleinyfwuniformmenswear27.jpg

Courtesy of Tommy Lei

2. Tell me about your trip from L.A. to N.Y.C. -- red eye? No red eye? What airline do you like? What are your tips for traveling in style? And where do you like to stay in N.Y.C.?

I typically prefer non-red eye flights, because I want to feel rested on an actual bed in preparation for the busy days ahead. Virgin America is definitely my airline of choice; Delta and JetBlue are a close second. It's so crucial to invest in stylish but functional travel gear, especially when you travel often. My go-to brands this time around are Ghurka (high-end), Bric's (luxe) and Kao Pao Shu (modern) -- all great bags depending on your budget. In terms of accommodations, I prefer boutique hotels that offer world-class service with stunning interiors yet still deliver an intimate, cozy experience. That's why I went with the Sofitel NYC for my stay. It completely exceeded my expectations on every level.

3. Who are you most excited to see during Fashion Week?

I was most excited to see Perry Ellis (they just named Michael Maccari as their new creative director). The past two seasons has indicated the brand's ascent to its former glory. And this season was no different -- the clothes that came down the runway were incredibly tailored and possessed enough depth for any sartorial personality.

4. Who did you discover you love that you did not know about?

Landeros by Andres Michel Landeros, an N.Y.C.-based designer who is a Parsons grad. His FW15 collection completely took my breath away. It was dark, mysterious and broody but with a visceral elegance punctuated by sensuous textures and silhouettes. Simply sublime.

5. What do you hate about Fashion Week?

I'll be completely frank here: The timing of the shows. It's either too early, or wedged in between too many other shows/appointments. And, in light of this current season, I'd also add Uber's surge pricing onto this list.

6. What did you wear this week?

Quite similar to what I had worn last season: My fashion week default brands are mostly Acne Studios, KTZ, G-Star RAW, Saint Laurent and Tom Ford.
Accessories-wise, I wore a backpack from Ghurka, a Kao Pao Shu clutch and Lura sunglasses.

7. What is the thinking process behind your outfits?

It's quite simple actually -- I go with my gut instinct. I believe a lot of people will tell you that they get inspired by magazine and style icons; I sincerely believe the most authentic personal style comes from those unplanned, spontaneous moments that reflect your mood and how you want to present yourself to the world. It doesn't have to be expensive or a replica of a how-to style column to look good. Always choose to listen to your inner voice and let it come from the heart.

8. What's the best thing about being a fashion blogger in today's digital landscape?

First and foremost, our most loyal group of readers and audiences -- we wouldn't be here without them. The next best thing would be the camaraderie amongst fellow bloggers and tastemakers -- there is an immediate feeling of acceptance and understanding in the community that makes fashion more accessible than ever before. On top of that, it is truly amazing working first-hand with brands that you've always admired by providing constructive feedback in a receptive and collaborative way.

Lily James On 'Cinderella' Waist Controversy: 'Why Do Women Always Get Pointed At For Their Bodies?'

$

Lily James is ready to stop talking about the size of her waist in Disney's new adaptation of "Cinderella."

The actress previously defended her figure as "naturally quite small" after users on social media accused the "Cinderella" filmmakers of digitally altering her body to make it thinner. James told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani on Monday that the focus on her waist is symptomatic of the troublesome way society discusses women's bodies.

"On one hand it's upsetting, on the other hand it's just boring," James said. "Why do women always get pointed at for their bodies? And why is this whole thing happening and I'm constantly having to justify myself? International Women's Day has just gone, and it just feels just a bit sad that it's still happening. You know, I'm very healthy and I always have been."

"Cinderella" director Kenneth Branagh told HuffPost Live last week that James' waist was not altered and looked tiny because of lighting and the "natural body physics" of wearing a corset. James also praised the "beautifully-designed" costume and said she "felt like a princess" when she was wearing it.

Richard Madden, who plays Prince Charming in the film, corroborated the insistence that James' waist appears onscreen exactly as it is in real life.

"I can vouch for Lily on this. That's her real waist," Madden told HuffPost Live. "I held it, I know how tiny it was. And she did eat. She eats like a boy."

Bundling Your Clothes Isn't Only For Packing, It'll Change The Way You Spring Clean

$
0

We know you're busy trying to master the Konmari Method for organizing your home, but there's a simpler way to clean up your closet this spring: bundling.

First, you'll have to wash, purge and figure out what you really want to be wearing again come fall. But then you'll want to learn the art of bundling, which is a surefire way to avoid wrinkles.

It's a technique that travel pros swear by, but it works just as well in an out-of-season storage box as it does in a suitcase. Here's how it's done:

  1. Lay your most wrinkle-prone items (such as a jacket) on a flat surface.

  2. Layer smaller items face up on top, overlapping sleeves and alternating the direction of each item as you go. (For pants and skirts, fold lengthwise and align the waistband with the left edge of the bundle.)

  3. Once you've got a pile of items to stow, place a book or other boxy item in the center and fold each garment's loose ends (i.e. sleeves) over it until you have a neat rectangle.

  4. Place the bundle in a storage bin until next season.

Padge-Victoria Windslowe Convicted Of Murder In Fatal Buttocks Injection

$

0
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former madam who bragged of doing black-market "body sculpting" on thousands of women was convicted on Monday of murder in the death of a dancer whose heart stopped after nearly half a gallon of silicone was injected into her buttocks.

Padge-Victoria Windslowe's colorful testimony during her Philadelphia trial included claims that she was "the Michelangelo of buttocks injections" and that model Amber Rose was "a walking billboard" for her work. Yet Windslowe had no medical training, other than tips she said she picked up from overseas doctors who performed her sex change operation and a physician-client of her escort service who became her lover. "I think it was a hoax, like her whole life has been a hoax," Assistant District Attorney Carlos Vega said Monday of the supposed training.

The evidence showed that Windslowe traveled to hotel rooms and "pumping parties" with tools of her trade stuffed into a shiny pink purse: a water bottle filled with liquid silicone, a red plastic cup, needles and syringes, and Krazy Glue to close the wound.

Windslowe, 45, name-dropped the likes of rappers Nicki Minaj and Kanye West and tennis star Serena Williams during her testimony and claimed to have been baptized "Genevieve" after her sex change by the late Roman Catholic Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. Rose's representatives have not responded to messages seeking comment about the claim that she was a client.

Windslowe described herself as a serial entrepreneur who once ran a transgender escort service and a Gothic hip-hop performer who called herself the Black Madam.

"I was the best, and I don't mean that to be cocky," Windslowe testified, explaining why celebrities would have sought her out over a licensed plastic surgeon.

Authorities argued that she fled in 2011 after a botched injection killed Claudia Aderotimi, a 20-year-old London break-dancer and college student.

The trial was halted for several days last week while Windslowe was hospitalized for chest pains. She has been in prison since 2012, when the confounding 18-month investigation led to a coroner's homicide ruling.

"As we moved forward with this bizarre case from house to house (as Windslowe was on the move), from search warrant to search warrant, from year to year, we just stayed on top of it," police Lt. John Walker said.

Windslowe conceded that she had injected Aderotimi, but her lawyer argued that she never wished clients any harm. Prosecutors called her reckless, especially in her choice to use industrial-grade silicone and cut it with saline in a home blender.

Windslowe, who's about 5-foot-10 and 250 pounds, said she had injected herself with the same product many times — in her forehead, cheeks, chin, thighs and buttocks.

The jury took less than four hours to reject a lesser manslaughter charge and convict her of third-degree murder, which involves malice but not premeditation.

Windslowe also was convicted of aggravated assault for injuries to a Philadelphia woman hospitalized after the injections and two weapons counts — for using of low-quality silicone.

She faces 20 to 40 years in prison on the murder conviction alone at her June 11 sentencing.

There have been several similar deaths around the country involving underground buttocks injections. A mother of three who died in Texas after having work done at a tile store was left by the roadside after her death in April 2011. A Colombian couple is serving up to eight years in prison for manslaughter in that case.

"Society puts a lot of pressure on women, especially when they're young," Walker said. "Ms. Windslowe here clearly preyed on people."

Windslowe charged $1,000 to $2,500 for each treatment. The proceeds helped fund her home recording studio, slickly produced music videos and luxury car leases.

The typically upbeat Windslowe lowered her head after the verdict.

Lawyer David Rudenstein said the potential dangers weren't clear to his client in 2011. He called her remorseful over both the injuries — a second case in New Jersey could yet yield charges — and Aderotimi's death.

He thought his client "came off very well in her tete-a-tete with Vega" during cross-examination but perhaps told one too many anecdotes during three days on the stand.

"She did have an answer for everything," he said.

Gold Apple Watch Will Start At A Mere $10,000

Want to flaunt your wealth, tell the time and monitor your heart rate? All at once?! You can now throw down some serious cash on a gold Apple Watch, called the Apple Watch Edition.

The gold watch will start at a whopping $10,000, Apple announced at an event in San Francisco on Monday. The most expensive version of the gold watch The Huffington Post could find on Apple's website sold for $17,000. The gold watch will be available in limited quantities and in select stores. All Apple Watches will be available for pre-order starting April 10 and for purchase April 24.

Yes, that's extremely expensive for something that could be obsolete in the next year, but it's not absurd in the world of luxury watches. It's hard to find even a pre-owned Rolex for less than $5,000. But while a traditional watch becomes an heirloom, an expensive piece of technology just loses value over time. In 5 years, people might be donating their old Apple Watches the way we donate our old iPhones.

If you decide to invest in an Apple Watch, you've got a few different options, and only one of them is gold. There are three different styles: the Apple Watch (between $549 and $1,049, depending on size and band choice), the Apple Watch Sport (starting at $349 for 38mm and $399 for 42mm) and the uber-pricey Apple Watch Edition, which starts at $10,000. These aren't standalone products, however; you'll need an iPhone to operate any of these Apple Watches.

The gold Apple Watch comes in two colors -- rose gold and yellow gold -- and two case sizes: 38mm and 42 mm. All cases are 18-karat gold. You can also choose from different types of watch bands and buckles.

With the Apple Watch, you'll be able to communicate with your friends via text, phone calls and email, send little drawings and share your location, heartbeat and other personal info. The Apple Watch also has a built-in fitness tracker.

Apple's no stranger to exorbitantly expensive products. The company currently offers a desktop computer for $3,999.

Target's latest foray into the plus-size market couldn't have happened without the help of a few power bloggers. When the chain launched its new plus-size line Ava & Viv a little over a month ago, plus-size style icons Nicolette Mason, Gabi Gregg, and Chastity Garner were front and center, acting as models, consultants, and online cheerleaders.

To really understand someone, the saying goes, you must walk a mile in their shoes. Maxima, Portugal's leading women's fashion magazine is encouraging men to do just that with a powerful new exhibition titled "100 Homens Sem Prenceitos: Um Passo Pela Igualidade" (100 Men without Prejudices: A Step for Equality).

To mark International Women's Day, Editor-in-Chief Sofia Lucas commissioned fashion photographer Branislav Šimončik to capture one hundred of the country's leading men - such as Michelin-starred chef José Avillez, film director Ruben Alves, designer Nuno Baltazar and basketball star Tomás Barroso - posing in towering Luís Onofre heels to raise awareness of women's rights and money for breast cancer research. Some of the images were published in issues during the course of last year and now all appear together at Lisbon's Centro Cultural de Belém as well as in a glossy coffee table book.

Fashion brands and fashion media of course are no strangers to championing women's issues. In 2013, Gucci founded Chime for Change, promoting education, health and justice for girls and women worldwide. This year, Vogue joined the global "Not There" campaign, which saw women cut from famous images like the Mona Lisa, fashion photographs and magazine covers, leaving a gaping void. Diane von Furstenberg established the DVF Awards in 2010 to honor women leaders, entrepreneurs and activists.

But as International Women's Day grows in popularity, it follows Christmas, Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving in shedding its original purpose to become yet another sales and marketing opportunity.

Net-A-Porter offered an exclusive cashmere sweater designed for the occasion with a circle of pink hearts and stars. While Luxury Daily described the design as "symbolic and empowering" it seems more to play into gender stereotypes. Rather than sharing the proceeds with a charity it is hoped that the sweater will "encourage participation in other charitable promotions."

Luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo joined the vast roster of brands content to keep their commemoration to social media. Their choice of image - a Photoshopped and overtly sexual product crotch shot - wishing customers a Happy International Women's Day makes one wonder if they know what the day is actually about.

It is to celebrate women to be sure - one mustn't be too dour about these things - and there are many ways of doing so. But there are certainly options more in keeping with the spirit of the day than pushing clichés and gift-giving while ignoring the plight of women the rest of the year.

Despite the progress of the last century in developed countries, women the world over still face wildly unequal opportunities and restrictions on sovereignty over their lives and even their bodies. Arguably, fashion advertisers and magazines like Vogue and Maxima could do even more. For starters, the manipulation of photographs and the perpetuation of unrealistic notion about female beauty are the modern day equivalent of Victorian corsets, keeping women's validation subject to male-centered approval.

And yet this is where Maxima's initiative is most interesting. In a close-knit and relatively conservative Latin country, where machismo is still in evidence and women work hard to safeguard their reputations, Maxima has asked men to physically and metaphorically put themselves in women's shoes. After all, the fight for women's rights begins with men.

And the resulting images are both thought provoking and oddly seductive, studiously avoiding the campiness of drag. Besides the familiar role reversal and objectification, they reveal a new kind of man: one masculine enough to show his solidarity with women.

There are even several pairs of man-sized, red, stiletto pumps available for those brave enough to teeter in them through the exhibition. No real man could possibly refuse.
