Dyeing to change your hair color? Join the club. There's just something about the sun that makes me crave color, from florescent bright shoes, to bold lips, and sun-kissed hair, theres no better time to blossom into a new style than spring.

First seen in Vogue, Balayage, which was taken from the French word meaning "to sweep," is a freehand technique in which swatches of hair are sectioned and hand painted against a backing board with a lightening agent. The coloring technique developed in the 1970's is modern, chic, and creates depth and dimension thats perfect for some fun in the sun. Loved by Gisele Bundchen and those in the know, Balayage is the hottest way to brighten up your look this season.

To help me spring forward with a new hair-do, I turned to the talented Gina Mancinone, the general manager at Boston's finest hair salon, Salon Mario Russo. After a consultation, Gina set me up with an appointment with master stylist Elle Proulx Cohen to cut my hair and "Bostons Best Colorist" John Brosnan, to help me heat things up with a new "do."
2015-04-06-1428280622-87257-577B2422.jpg

For my hair transformation, I sat down with Elle who cut right to the chase by expertly layering my long locks to help add body and shape to my one dimensional hair. Since thick hair that is weighed down can be shapeless, Elle brought my locks back to life with layers to amp up my style power. "From soft face-framing layers to seamless volumizing ones, adding dimension to your cut while removing unwanted bulk is the perfect way to create a fresh new look" Elle told me.
2015-04-06-1428280529-4825724-577B2317copy.jpg

Next, I was off to see John for my Balayage. As a hair color virgin, I was thankful to be in the hands of a true artist like John who immediately made me feel at ease with his expert advice and warm nature. After a consultation, we decided less was more, so John created a "les reflets du soleil sur les cheveux" (sun-kissed hair) look by applying the Balayage around my face to emphasize movement and create depth. Balayage, which is also called "hair painting," creates the most natural-looking results because the colorist paints on the highlights by hand. This method of lightening gives the colorist more control--and creates the illuminated highlights everyone wants this time of year.
2015-04-06-1428280830-2718037-577B2482.jpg

Best of all?  Balayage is low maintenance, and gives a gorgeous healthy finish that looks nature-enhanced, glossy and luxe. Since healthy hair will never go out of style, John and Elle finished my hair transformation off with a treatment and gloss so my hair felt as beautiful as it looked.
Bottom line? Whether you're looking to lighten up your hair color or are dying to debut a brand-new shade, spring is the perfect opportunity to make a change and the team at Salon Mario Russo will give you the best head of hair in town. Promise.

Amber Rose ditched her platinum blond hair for a vibrant blue hue.

Rose's new look was on display when she stepped out this weekend for an evening at the Penthouse nightclub in Los Angeles. She matched the color with the nail polish on her fingers and toes, and it popped against her all-white outfit as she made her way into the venue.

She was also seen sporting the turquoise shade on Easter Sunday while out with ex Wiz Khalifa and their son Sebastian for Tamar Braxton's party in Calabasas.

The team spent at least an hour with me on the phone the first time I reached out to them, I wanted to understand the Uzuri Closet vision, inspiration and goals, and boy did they open up to me.

Uzuri Closet will be a marketplace specifically for African Designers, allowing this new passionate, and talented group of emerging African artists to sell their work to a growing fan base. Their vision is really to recognize this community of talent and allow them to sell on a platform built by a team that believes in their vision.

Q-What inspired you to want to create Uzuri Closet?

Hmm, simply put, the love of fashion and the beauty of African Print Fabric!

Yes! I believe everybody loves fashion, whether we realize it or not, we all express ourselves through our fashion sense. Some of my favorite designers are

  • Christian Siriano

  • Sean Kelly

  • BERNAN

  • Mimmy Yeboah

As you can see the simplicity and yet complexity of their designs from material to color choices to their designs! The world does not know the African designers Bernan and Mimmy Yeboah too well yet, but they do have a following on social networks.

Q-What does Uzuri mean?

Uzuri actually has the meanings "beauty" "goodness" "Beautiful" ...It's all positive things which is why we love the name. For us, the emphasis is on "Beautiful". So Beautiful Closet or Uzuri Closet as we call it.

April is here, spring is arriving around the country and the end of the school year is no longer a distant speck on the horizon. High school seniors are finalizing college choices, selecting trade schools, filling out job applications, and determining what the next stage of life will bring. Amidst all this is time for some diversion and fun - the school Prom. This view shows the Grand March and dance floor, complete with spectacular streamers, of an unidentified school circa 1950, photographed by Al Heitman.

Harry Styles Shows That Being Charitable Is Really 'What Makes You Beautiful'

Harry Styles can be a pretty amazing guy -- and that's not just because he has fabulous hair.

Though One Direction has been busy performing around the world as part of the "On The Road Again" tour, Styles took time out last week to visit students from the Lalela Project, an organization that provides arts education to at-risk youth in Cape Town, South Africa, according to the group's Instagram page.

The 21-year-old reportedly just wanted to do some good.

Harry decided to go to the Lalela Project all by himself and he really impressed kids and workers there," a source told the Sun UK, adding that “Harry could easily have spent extra time at his hotel relaxing but he really wants to give back when the band are traveling the world."

The source told the Sun that Styles chatted with the students and gave them tickets to the band's show in the city. While on stage, the singer even wore a Lalela luggage tag during the show, according to the organization's Facebook page.

Despite his hectic touring life, Styles wanted to pay his dues to initiatives that were helping the people who needed it most, the source said.

“This tour hasn’t been easy for the boys but [Harry] knows their lives are far better than many of their fans’ and kids being helped by projects like this.”

Styles' visit with the Lalela students was a compassionate move, but the 21-year-old is no stranger to giving back.

Back in 2013, the singer and his bandmate, Liam Payne, participated in a charity date auction, in which fans could bid on an evening out with the two, the Press Association reported. The money from the auction went to go to Trekstock, an organization that supports young people with cancer.

Earlier that year, the band also recorded a cover of Blondie's "One Way or Another" to support Comic Relief, a charity that works to tackle poverty and social injustice.

8 Skin Secrets Experts Swear By For Glowing Complexions

$

We all want clear and glowing skin, but beauty regimes that work for your best friend will not necessarily work for you.

Because we are all such very different creatures, we wanted to learn the best general tips from the very people who see different complexions every day. Here are the eight secrets to follow, no matter your skin type.

1. DIET
fruits and vegetables
"In 2013, I lost nearly 60 pounds by making small changes to what I ate -- largely cutting out breads, pasta, sugars and any processed food and adding in lots of lean protein, greens and healthy fats. The improvement in my complexion and energy levels was astounding. Fresh greens like arugula, kale and collards oxygenate the body and skin unlike any topical you can apply. Protein provides skin cells with the building blocks they require to turn over effectively and maintain hydration. My rosacea went away, my under eye circles and puffiness faded. It was quite something." --Dr. Harold Lancer, dermatologist and founder of Lancer Skincare

2. USE SLEEP TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
peaceful sleep
"Many people don’t realize what a large role sleep plays in the anti-aging realm. Sleep is important for your skin. Physiologically, the skin has a lot to do during the day including metabolism, fending off UV radiation, protecting the body from pathogens and regulating body temperature. But once asleep, the skin does its most significant repair work including production of collagen and elastin, the skin’s connective tissue responsible for firmness, tone and elasticity." --Dr. Ava Shamban, dermatologist and founder of Ava MD Skincare

3. STOP PICKING
magnifying mirror
"Picking pimples is a very common habit that can lead to scarring, enhanced redness, and the spread of bacteria (which can create secondary infections). Although it is very tempting to pick, try using a good spot treatment with salicylic acid to attack the bacteria before it becomes inflamed and see your aesthetician or dermatologist if it worsens. Absolutely avoid looking in a magnifying mirror, as it will provoke picking. The only individuals that inspect your skin that close should be your skin care experts." --Gina Mari, founder of Gina Mari Skincare

4. KEEP IT CLEAN
washing face
"Wash your face like you mean it. Sounds simple enough, but too often people are in a rush and don't take the time to 'baby' their skin. Imagine washing a pan full of grease. If you don't take your time and wash it thoroughly, the grease and oil will still be left in the spots you didn't pay attention to." --Jennifer Kramer, founder of Corrective Skincare

Extra tip: In addition to washing your face regularly, Amanda Nederkoorn, one of the top estheticians at Face Haus, suggests spritzing a hydrating mist on your skin after washing. "Water often contains chlorine and other elements that are harsh on the skin," she says. A mist "neutralizes the tap water and allows your skin to receive the products more effectively. Mist your face again after applying all your products to seal it all in."

5. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR EYES
eye cream
"People tend to just put a tiny amount of eye cream under eye area, and they are really missing out on its benefits. SMILE -- and look in the mirror. The fine lines start at the eye, but can extend all the way to hairline. Apply your eye cream from the bottom corner of the inner eye all the way out to the cheekbone and hairline, and then up and around the lid. Think of sunglasses: apply to the area a pair of sunglasses would cover." --Sonya Dakar, skincare line creator and founder of the Sonya Dakar Skin Clinic

6. ICE, ICE & ICE
ice cubes
"One amazing (and free) thing I do at home to keep my skin looking great is 'icing' There are three main benefits of icing. Similar to a sports injury, when you put ice on a breakout, it reduces redness and inflammation. Ice can also be used as a natural exfoliant. When you put something in the freezer, it preserves it, similar to putting meat in a freezer. Just remember, you have to keep the ice moving. Don't hold it in one spot, it can burn like heat can. Sometimes I even throw a little aloe vera in the water before freezing it." --Jennifer Kramer

7. TRY A SKIN OIL
skin oil
"The quickest way to fake glowing skin is to use good face oil. It will automatically nourish your skin and give it a healthy shine (not greasy or oily). They do not clog pores. In fact, they balance oil production. Apply a facial oil to damp clean skin twice daily. Use it alone or mix it with your tinted moisturizer and your skin will glow in a pinch!" --Sonya Dakar

8. USE PROTECTION
sun hat
"In the morning, apply antioxidant serum followed by a broad-spectrum sunblock of SPF 30 or higher. Some UV penetrates through the sunscreen in the antioxidant provides extra protection. While you are outside, make sure you are staying protected -- yes with sunblock, but even with your clothing. Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat." --Dr. Ava Shamban

Dove's 'Choose Beautiful' Campaign Says Women Are So Much More Than Average

Dove wants women to #ChooseBeautiful.

As part of the brand's latest campaign, which launched on April 7, Dove set up signs above side-by-side doors in five cities around the world. In each city, one door read "Beautiful" and the other "Average." A camera crew then observed the way women reacted to the marked doors -- and which one they ultimately walked through. The results are a powerful commentary on how many women perceive their own beauty.

The video was shot in Shanghai, San Francisco, London, Sao Paulo and Delhi. Most of the women -- though definitely not all -- walked through the "Average" door. Some laughed and walked through their chosen entrance quickly, while others paused and thought about the choice they were about to make.

One American woman featured in the video discussed the thoughts she had before choosing a door. "Am I choosing because of what's constantly bombarded at me and what I'm being told that I should accept? Or am I choosing because that's what I really believe?" she asked.

One woman who walked through the "Average" door later told Dove why she made that choice. “Beautiful to me… it’s too far out of reach,” she said. Another woman who walked through the "Beautiful" door described feeling empowered: “It was quite a triumphant feeling," she said. "It was like telling the world I think I’m beautiful."

"Women make thousands of choices each day -- related to their careers, their families, and, let’s not forget, themselves," Dove said in a press release. "Feeling beautiful is one of those choices that women should feel empowered to make for themselves."

As a part of the Choose Beautiful campaign, Dove interviewed 6,400 women between the ages of 18 and 64 in 20 countries around the world about how they perceive beauty in themselves and other women. Ninety-six percent of women surveyed said they don't see themselves as beautiful, but 80 percent believed every woman has something beautiful about her. While many women can see the beauty in other women, it's sometimes harder to see it in ourselves.

"Women around the world have the power to embrace their beauty, and yet many of us do not," Dove's Senior Global Director Victoria Sjardin told The Huffington Post. "Dove wanted to inspire women to seize the opportunity to choose what makes us feel beautiful everyday -- because when we do, it unlocks confidence and happiness."

As one woman said towards the end of the video: "Beautiful is a great word, so why not see what's on the other side of that."

Freshly Picked Debuts Clothing Line And Awesomely Diverse Campaign

Chances are you've already seen and swooned over the tiny leather baby moccasins by Freshly Picked. I mean, just look...

The miniature footwear company has gained a cult following thanks to an appearance on "Shark Tank," and celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian and Ciara covering their kids' feet in the adorable shoes. Now Susan Peterson, founder of the Utah-based brand, is expanding her children's fashion empire into clothing -- and the threads are just as cute as the mocs.

freshly picked

The debut collection -- which includes tops, overalls, onesies, shorts and a backpack -- has a wild and wonderful theme. Petersen commissioned artist Chris Crosby to create the eye-catching tropical and banana prints that were inspired by the palm tree motifs at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Not only are the designs a fun way to dress your kids, they have allowed Petersen to offer a broader price range.

"It has provided an entry level piece for people to purchase, Petersen told The Huffington Post. "So if you're a fan of the brand, but maybe a $60 pair of moccasins is kind of hard for you, there's a t-shirt for $20 or other things with a lower price point and you still feel like you can have a piece of the brand even if you don't have the moccasins."

We're also super impressed and completely in love with the pint-sized models for the Spring 2015 campaign. It's rare you see much diversity in fashion ads, so to see a Black, Asian and even a little boy with Down syndrome is a truly beautiful and refreshing sight.

"I've always had a really special place in my heart for Down syndrome kids. I grew up with this really sweet Down syndrome boy in my neighborhood. And I just loved him," Petersen said. "Even as I'm talking about him, I've got this huge smile on my face. They really are just the most special humans you've ever met."

"Our brand is super diverse -- our customers are diverse, and we wanted them to be able to see their baby and something they identified with within our brand."

Here's a look at more images from the Freshly Picked Spring 2015 campaign. What do you think?

Christie Brinkley tried to save a bird, but instead she ended up with a black eye. "We interrupt this holiday to take a little unplanned excursion to Miami for cat scans and stitches following an accident trying to save a bird," she wrote on Instagram on Monday. She'd been in Turks and Caicos when the bird-saving mission failed.

First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about what she can't wait to do once her husband's time in office is over.

In an interview with Rachael Ray during the White House Easter Egg Roll, Obama said she misses cruising around, noting it's been "seven or eight years" since she was able to drive a car.

"I just want to ride around in a car with the window open," Obama said. "It's just like, I want to do that."

The first lady also revealed who taught her daughter Malia, 16, how to drive: the Secret Service.

"They wouldn't let me in the car with her," Obama said. "Driving for Malia, I think, gives her a sense of normalcy, like the rest of her friends are doing. And my kids have got to learn how to live in the world like normal kids."

Ray's full interview with Obama will air Thursday, April 9.

Sunday's mid-season premiere of "Mad Men" opened with a shot of a young woman named Cindy wearing almost nothing but a $15,000 chinchilla coat. She silently modeled for Don Draper, showed some skin, then left the room just as we realized she was auditioning for a commercial for Wilkinson razor blades.

Vogue pointed out that Cindy was played by Rainey Qualley, who's the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, best known for "Groundhog Day" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral." Qualley, MacDowell's eldest daughter, is a singer-songwriter, was named Miss Golden Globe 2012 and has acted in "Falcon Song" and alongside her mother in 2012's "Mighty Fine."

You might also recognize MacDowell's other daughter, Margaret Qualley, who plays Jill Garvey in HBO's "The Leftovers."

Hair Accessories to Trend This Spring and Summer

$
0
0
I'm betting on headbands and other hair accessories trending strong this summer.

We'll always have one or two ponytail holds, barrettes or headbands on the vanity because they're essential. We need them to get our hair out of the way for a workout, cooking or gardening, but I think we're going to see more of them as fashion accessories, merging with the bohemian and hippie looks, and the romantic period updos we've seen so much of lately.

Headbands were practically emblematic of the flower child movement of the '60s and '70s, adorned with, of course, "flowers," but the possibilities are endless, including metallic headbands of leafy filigree and glassy gem clusters and beads.

Designers for Marchesa at the London Spring Fashion Week paired wispy soft dresses with flowery head bands to go with wavy natural hair. And in Milan the fashion house of Dolce & Gabbana went with headbands, combs and clips of gold leaves, pearls and red roses with Spanish-influence updos to accompany the romantic clothing designs. The latter were actually the fashions on sale for the coming fall and winter, but the difference between the clothes and the hair is that we can all start wearing the hairstyles immediately, while we may need to wait a couple months for the clothes to hit the racks.

Particularly strong on the runways and red carpets on this side of the pond have been those '60s-'70s center parts. Think about Calvin Klein -- much of the latest offerings by that label have been paired with center parts and loose wavy hair. And Reese Witherspoon, nominated for Wild, was on the red carpets for the Oscars in Los Angeles with a simple, elegant center part.

These looks can't help but echo the '60s and '70s. A lot of these beautiful hair styles, though, have remained unadorned. We've been in a long, beautiful trend of natural colors and simple waves, ponytails and updos. Hair accessories that make a statement are a natural next step, and a perfect trend for the warming months of spring and summer.

For every ponytail there is a clasp, tie, ribbon, band or hold. Lately, the selection has grown dramatically with lots of new leather and metallic designs that are not only attractive but highly functional, quickly adding flare to virtually any style. Many of these accessories also are very inexpensive. Even bobby pins have been decorated with stones, metallic leaves and filigree. These new selections allow for every sort of look from simple and contemporary to flowery and romantic.

These accessories can be added so easily to make a corporate workday style suddenly appear soft or adventurous. Why use just a "nothing" ponytail band when you can occasionally change your look entirely while retaining the ease and function?

As always, be open to change!

I've been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off! Well, maybe not that jump off but you get the idea.

It's been a minute since we've recapped some of the best Insta-fashion and beauty moments of the past week. I could say "life has been crazy;" "I've been trying to find my creative juices" blah, blah, blah. But the truth is, I've just been a little too lazy for my liking and that's why I've been M.I.A.

Sorry about that, folks! I know you need your daily fix of slayworthy moments to get you through the week. So without further ado (or more excuses from me) I present seven double tap moments of the past week.

Because what's a week's worth of fashion and beauty moments without the Queen Bee herself proving that a stellar outerwear piece should do all the talking this season?

Welp, you know the drill. Tell me in the comments below who was your favorite from the past week. And be sure to come back next week (I promise we're back to our regularly scheduled program) when we recap more Insta-Fashion & Beauty moments of the past week.

Until next time...Ciao!

Crushing at SXSW

Just as we have for the past few years, we enthusiastically headed back to SXSW so that we could hang in one of our favorite cities and meet all of the upcoming musicians whose style is as wildly expressive as their music. To find out about five of our crushes, read on, and subscribe to our YouTube channel, because, who knows, maybe one day you'll see one of them on the stool in an episode of The What's Underneath Project!

Emma Czerny, the woman behind Magic Island and a current Berliner, is as dreamy with her off-the-grid spirit as she is in her Motown/hip-hop-inspired low-fi pop. We love how she makes white socks and a trench exude style, and how she doesn't own a phone in order to be more present in her life.

Merging urban Atlanta (where he's from) with 60s flower power, Raury is an 18-year-old musician who's as much a rapper as he is a conscious tribal folkie. He has the stage presence of a spiritual guru and his songs confront some of society's largest ills, releasing a track right after Darren Wilson was not indicted. "I won't live a life on my knees," he chants in "God's Whisper."

Twin Danger's Vanessa Bley is an environmentalist who dresses like a Hell's Angel badass and sings like Billie Holliday. A chanteuse for the 21st century, Vanessa's bluesy, sultry voice lifts you up to another planet. As she says, "We encourage people to dress up and get lost with us. You'll be swinging, dancing, maybe a little teary eyed. Probably spill some wine on yourself, get a few bruises. You know, the usual jazz show."

The headwrap, the beard, and the throwback Pac-Man sweater -- Humble the Poet's uniform is all about turning convention on its head, just like his life's work. The teacher, writer, and rapper is on a mission to combat Western culture's notion of money, declaring, "Happiness won't be achieved from acquiring a bunch of stuff, it'll come from the appreciation of the things we already have."

Don't let the effortlessly chill body suit and Converse fool you, Sevdaliza, the Iranian singer/producer, has an intensely personal sound that runs the gamut from brooding R&B to Madonna-esque disco. Her music digs into her heartbreak and, to us, her openness is as seductive as her mane of black hair and the way in which she rocks her muscles and curves.

We can't talk about SXSW crushes without also mentioning: SZA, Lolawolf's Zoe Kravitz, Dej Loaf, KaneHoller's Chelsea Tyler, Julia Cumming of Sunflower Bean, Hiatus Kaiyote's Nai Palm, Stromae, Ibeyi, Gabrielle Herbst, Laleh, ... and that's just to name a few!!!

While each of our crushes has their own unique style (both sartorially and musically), what brings them together is how robustly they manifest their self-acceptance and self-expression through their art.

xo,
Elisa + Lily

Turning Dreams Jobs Into Reality: Creative Director, Garance Doré

Everyone has a "dream job" lying dormant in their hearts. Unfortunately, it's usually plagued by one negative thought: that it can't become a reality. But many people have turned their dreams into daily realities. How did they get there? What inspires them? Surely they took all the right steps at the exact right time, without suffering any detours. I spoke to a few very successful people working their own "dream jobs" hoping to glean some insight.

The ability to be your own boss, to work wherever and whenever you want and promote what you're passionate about, all the while earning an income. That's the daily life of a blogger, in a simplified nutshell. Sounds like a dream job! But billions of blogs exist and only a small handful strike the "iconic" cord with readers.

In 2006, Garance Dore was an aspiring fashion illustrator who wanted to try out the (largely untapped) blogging medium as a way of getting her art seen. Fast forward not even ten years and... everybody in the fashion industry knows who she is.

"I still like to surprise people when they ask me what I do by answering that I'm a blogger, because to this day they always look at me with a lot of questions, and it opens a nice conversation," says the affable founder and creative director of the brand, Garance Dore. Yes, she's now a lifestyle brand and between her self-taught photography, illustrating, writing and all manifestations of the above, a very prolific one at that, with countless luxury companies occupying her increasing collaborations roster.

Unsurprisingly, her childhood was spent pursuing many creative endeavors. "I was dancing, playing the cello, and everybody was always like, 'You're an artist!!!' I was drawing all the time. I was very good at writing." But when the time came to "make real decisions," this self-professed, "deeply obedient kid" chose pleasing her parents, who opposed her pursuit of creative ambitions and favored a more stable career path. It took, "ten years and a lot of analysis to come back to myself," Garance says.

Is she surprised by the success she's found? "More than surprised," she admits. "I have a very simple, grounded way about life so I have never really examined what I project, I'm only starting to understand it now."

Do good instincts have anything to do with her success? "I try to find the balance between following my instincts and strategizing," she agrees. "When you're strategizing never forget to ask yourself the first question: Why do you do what you do? What's your mission? What's your idea of success?" These questions keep her grounded.

Her blog has taught her that creativity is like a moving target. "Don't get too stuck, don't always try to be perfect," she shares. Instead, evolving has become part of her lifestyle. "A blog is so instant; if I wanted it to be as perfect as a magazine I would never publish every day. In the end, it's the authenticity people get attached to." Truly, Garance's online voice brims with unpretentious authenticity.

I ask her what she attributes her achievements to. "I don't really know what I can attribute it to," she answers. "I think a lot of energy and desire (...) and then a question of timing, being at the right place at the right time and pushing at the right moments. A little bit like a surfer who catches a wave, it's a mix of instinct and of a lot of work," she waxes poetically, with a smile.

Being one's own boss is filled with pluses; but it's also an incredible amount of pressure. "Funny enough, I don't get overwhelmed," Garance says. "I used to be a very anxious person that used to get very overwhelmed - I really worked on that and now I feel pretty relaxed," she casually waves off the statement with a totally believable smile. "I try to see through and always remember what really matters." When all else fails, Garance has many tricks to refocus, ranging from drinking a margarita with her best friends, to escaping to Costa Rica. Good tips!

She has another - this aimed at anybody with a desire to pursue a creative passion. "Basically, just do it," she encourages. There's no easy pathway to success in any industry; an extreme amount of diligent work is what sustained Garance's start. "I didn't really realize at the time because I was carried by passion, but I was pretty obsessed by what I was doing," she says; she still is. "I think there is no way you can succeed as a creative if you don't give it your everything." Having the right team to work with is a close second. "To me it starts with people that I get along with and have the same values of warmth, hard work and fun. If you have that, you can go very far."

So, Garance, is what you do a dream job? "I love everything about my job, but of course, the freedom is priceless. And having a voice is priceless. And teamwork is fantastic." The toughest part is the constantly moving landscape of publishing. "It's fascinating and I love being part, but in a way sometimes I feel that it's more about the medium than the content. I love exploring it though," she says, offering her newfound enthusiasm for Snapchat as an example.

Hard work, passion for it, and creating a good support system; is that what's needed for success? She offers one final ingredient. "The real secret is to really believe you can do it. To visualise, dream, and then make it happen," she offers. "It sounds cheesy but that's the main thing I tell to people who come for me for advice." Coming from this self-taught illustrator, photographer and writer who's gone from anonymity to having the entire fashion world at her red-manicured fingertips, I think that's very sound advice!

The "Dancing With the Stars" judge dyed her blond hair pink and showed fans the new hue on Facebook and Instagram Tuesday. She channeled her inner mythical animal with the pastel shade.

Posted by Julianne Hough on Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Hough also shared some hair tips on her website from beauty coach Riawna Capri and revealed why she decided to change up her look.

"I love to experiment with my looks by way of beauty products, styling tools and sometimes even taking things a step further –- remember last year when I chopped off all my hair? It was a big, bold move but it was so worth it! It felt liberating not to hide behind all that hair," she wrote. "So why did I decide on the color pink this time? Because pink is the color of kindness!"

The 26-year-old is the latest celebrity to dare to try a rainbow hair color. Hilary Duff and Amber Rose both dyed their locks blue recently.

Spring And Summer Gift Ideas For Fashinoistas, Foodies, Decorating Buffs And Beauty Junkies

It's spring time! It's spring and summer holiday and events time!

That means Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduations, birthday parties, weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, and special events of all kinds. And with it, gifting is often a part -- whether it's for those hosting the fete, grads, moms, dads, or whatever other guest of honor you might be celebrating. He or she might be a fashion enthusiast, foodie, or have miles of beauty products in the cabinet. Whatever interests or hobbies your special somebody has, make the gift giving easier with some of these cool, chic and pretty much perfect gift items.

One key way to gift well regardless of who you're gifting to is to look to unique, upstart and independent product brands. While the boutique brand experience is hardly new to the world, there are more of these types of products and companies in stores than ever. Check out independent fashion or home decor designers in your area, or hop over to Whole Foods or any gourmet shop on or offline to find the perfect food lover item. It's a clever way to give something special and unique without breaking the bank.

On to your recipients. The fashionista can seem hard to shop for so keep gift items to the universal that can be worn his or her way. That can be simple wallets, a great cashmere wrap in a solid color, or anything that's a bit workable for any taste or style. Deux Lux, a vegan handbag and accessories line, is carried at a ton of luxury retail stores and looks and endures as well as any traditional accessory brand, yet is incredibly affordable. Perfect for spring and summer gifts!

Playing on the season trends is another way to gift fashion -- bright, bold yellow is a hot color for 2015. Go with an accessory like a bright jewelry piece or a card case as gift items if you're not sure an apparel item would be ideal. Copper metal is everywhere for spring and summer this year. Lainieline's collection has beautiful, effortless pieces in the popular metal that can be a great gift for moms, grads, family or friends.

Beauty lovers might be among the easiest to shop for when it comes to presents. Condiment editors love SpaRitual products across the board -- especially its sand scrubs for the shower or bath. The company is one of the leading in natural products, none of which are tested on animals. The rich scents and luxury textures make them every bit as chic and decadent for gift recipients. Stowaway cosmetics is perfect for college grads, those who'll be embarking on internships, traveling for study programs, or moms and working women on the go. Products are designed for just this, and the quality is fantastic.

The foodie's another easy one to shop for, especially during summer months when outdoor cooking and other feasts are popular. Nothing says warm weather season than s'mores outside by the fire. Plush Puffs gourmet marshmallows pack interesting and unique flavors and high quality perfect for this. Or, grab a stylish basket or container of any kind and pack with a range of spring and summer produce that's in season. Toss in gourmet chocolates, bake mixes or other non-perishable treats that compliment the fruits and veggies you've pulled together.

For house and home, there are also a ton of items perfect for saying thank you, congratulations or other celebrations. Spanish glassware is a fun way to incorporate something unusual and unexpected into a gift item. It makes a statement and conversation piece yet is simple to work with any taste or style. For students and young professionals who've graduated and will be off to college or first apartments, popular budget-friendly fashion stores like Zara, Target and H&M offer great houseware items perfect for gifts. Zara Home's boxes and baskets are in particular perfect.
