"Dior and I"...and I: How Frédéric Tcheng Made the Fashion Documentary of the Decade

The moment Raf Simons cries isn't even the best part of Frédéric Tcheng's documentary Dior and I. Neither is Simons' triumphant bow at the Fall 2012 Haute Couture show or the suspenseful moment when it seems no couture dresses will arrive at a fitting. The best part is more unexpected, even than tears. It's that somehow two creative souls so alike, faced with such a similar dilemma, could meet and work together to make such a well-crafted project. It's not that Frédéric Tcheng "gets" what Raf Simons is going through when Simons takes over the house of Dior eight weeks before the couture show, it's that Tcheng's filmmaking style is so empathetic that he lived the process himself.

"I see a parallel between the relationship that [Raf] can have with the founder of the house and the legacy, and the relationship that I can have with my subject. And it's a struggle to establish the right distance and to honor your subjects, but also to honor your own voice," Tcheng told Style.com in his soft-spoken manner, adding, "When I filmed the first scene of Raf meeting the seamstresses, I was actually meeting Raf for the first time through the lens of the camera...They had eight weeks [to make the collection], but I had eight weeks, too."

2015-04-16-1429202923-8710336-DIORANDI_STILL41.jpg

(photo: Courtesy of CIM Productions)

And in those eight weeks Tcheng spent chronicling the every move of the Dior atelier and of Simons himself--nearly 270 hours of footage--he captured the less-publicized side of fashion: the story of the people who make it. "I feel like fashion is everywhere and it's very image-driven. Making this film reminded me that there are hundreds of people who actually care deeply about how they make it," he began. "It's not just an image, it's not just about a dress on the red carpet. There's a whole story behind it, and it's a human story."

That story can be joyous, but it can also shake a designer to his core--both sides depicted in the film's final scene: The Fall 2012 Haute Couture show. "When I was shooting it, I was like, 'This is an emotional roller coaster,'" Tcheng laughed of the process on the whole, explaining "the film is a recording of my experience and also my own creative process." So was he scared to show that to Simons? "I wanted to be there when Raf saw it, and fortunately he didn't see it that way. He insisted on seeing it alone in his living room, and so I sent him a DVD," the director explained.

"You know, I was waiting by the phone. And he sent me a very beautiful text message saying that he was deeply moved by the story that he saw--even though it was very confronting and very personal, he recognized himself in it."

2015-04-16-1429203064-8713322-diorandistill.jpg

(photo: Courtesy of CIM Productions)

Since filming the documentary nearly three years ago, Tcheng has kept abreast of developments at the house of Dior--"It always surprises me how he's transforming his influences, whether he's doing a '70s-inspired collection or whether he's doing something that has to do with the historical past of the house," he said of recent Simons collections--while trying to avoid becoming a fashion world celebrity. "I don't want to rush into anything, and my goal is not to capitalize on a fashion career," Tcheng explained. "As a filmmaker, I really need to fall in love and be passionate about the subject, otherwise it's not happening to me."

Perhaps in that regard he and Simons have more in common than the weeks spent together during the making of the documentary. "Maybe we met in a previous life, I don't know," Tcheng laughed. "I learned a lot from just watching him create, and I think ultimately that's what keeps me going, that's what makes me want to make films...for me, it's about finding oneself. I've learned a lot about collaboration, about how to transform the legacy into something personal."

The Best Smartwatches to Keep You On the Edge of Both Tech and Style

$

0
In a marketplace of mass variety, it's become difficult to narrow down the best smartwatches worth owning. All that's certain is we want one. Like it or not, wearable tech is the wave of the future and these hi-tech timepieces are proving so, nearly doubling in growth rate on a global scale.

But just how did these things get popular so fast? The rise in notoriety stems from their ability to keep us connected to the world in the same way smartphones have for the past several years, delivering important info without the need of pulling out our iPhone or Android handset. Well, that and their ultramodern designs, which secretly inspire us to play out our Captain Kirk fantasies on the Enterprise. Don't lie: You've thought about it at one point or another.

Before rushing online to order one, you might be asking yourself what exactly differentiates smartwatches from the best fitness trackers. It isn't a stupid question, considering the blurred line between the two.

Each shares similar attributes, like displaying activity performance and mobile notifications. Oh yeah, they can tell time, too. The X factor more or less lies in the software. Like smartphones, these wrist-worn computers are reliant on an OS and its wide range of compatible apps.

Android Wear is leading the forefront right now and welcoming automated features that make life's simplest tasks easier to execute. Apple is next on the horizon to evolve the smartwatch landscape with the Apple Watch launching some time this spring. With so many to choose from, you can use a starting point.

Having already run the gamut, we put together a collection of the market's leading devices, while also touching on some of the highly anticipated releases due out in the coming weeks. The best smartwatches might be yet to come, but for now, it doesn't hurt to check out these fetching options, all quite affordable compared to mid-to-high end classic watches, which are more about status symbol than technological capability. You'd be lucky to find that kind of watch under $1000, while these hi-tech watches are all under $500, and most of the watches are actually under $300.

10. Martian Notifier

2015-04-17-1429296478-6675568-10.jpg

What the stealthy smartwatch might lack in high-end features, it makes up for in premium design and up-to-date messaging. The Notifier replicates the retro analog look and integrates a smart notification system that delivers the basics (texts, calls, and emails), along with alerts for a massive list of compatible apps on both iOS and Android. Simply put, it appeals to the sophisticated novice techie looking to keep up with the industry trend.

2015-04-17-1429296499-6994454-9.jpg

The 44mm stainless steel timepiece designed in partnership with Michael Bastian blends high-end fashion with standard functionality. There is no touchscreen here. Nor does it boast voice commands or track steps. Instead, the Chronowing flaunts several smart features engineered by HP such as displaying messages on the face and controlling a connected device's music player. Even cooler is its ability to show other requested info in the form of live sports scores and weather updates. The premium steel construction, leather strap options, and waterproof housing only add to its value.

The open-source ConnectIQ platform provides access for developers to create apps for the device as well. Battery life lasts anywhere between 10 hours to 3 weeks depending what mode you're in. And to ensure their creation is not only high-tech, but also a stylish smartwatch, Garmin presents customization options with different leather bands.

Functional, lightweight, and powered by the Android Wear platform--LG's first gen smartwatch remains a favorable options in its price class. Granted the basic design won't win over fashion-centric millennials, the fast charging time and vibrant 1.65 IPS LCD display with sharp pixel density are what matter most here (the fact that it's a high-tech affordable slim watch is also a plus). Google's dynamic OS comes into play on the operational end acting as a notification hub for users to interact with several programs through swipe or voice commands.

6. Samsung Gear S

2015-04-17-1429296561-1948517-6.jpg

In 2013, Samsung played trendsetter to the smartwatch movement by launching the original Galaxy Gear. This updated version ups the ante with a more ambitious design and phone-free communication. Its ability to double as a smartphone and screen incoming calls via built-in speaker clearly puts the Gear S in a league of its own. Though it's also worth highlighting the largely vivid 2-inch 480x360-pixel AMOLED display and bonus battery pack for long-lasting power. Then there is the 1.0GHz processor that takes on the task of breezing through alerts and navigation without any lag.

5. Sony SmartWatch 3

The latest addition to Sony's smartwatch lineup does compromise design for performance. And the payoff is rewarding depending on your needs. Geared more towards fitness buffs, the SmartWatch 3 comes equipped with GPS tracking to track workouts and solid build quality that makes it dust- and waterproof up to 2 meters. Though we find the ambient light sensor to be its hallmark feature since it optimizes the screen for readability in bright environments. Android Wear compatibility means intuitive voice controls and standard mobile alerts.

4. Asus ZenWatch

2015-04-17-1429296619-4016896-4.jpg

Asus smartwatch is arguably the most attractive and impressive of the batch. Not only does it accommodate the suit-and-tie crowd, but also caters to casual techies with its unique array of features not found elsewhere. None more exciting than the mood-detection function that assigns a watch face (from over 100+ combinations) best suiting your personality. Specs are even more enticing with a blazing 1.2Ghz Snapdragron processor and sharp 320 x 320 pixel AMOLED panel spearheading the Android Wear experience. The built-in heart rate sensor is just an added incentive to get this on your wrist.

3. Pebble Steel

2015-04-17-1429296639-370957-3.jpg

Some say Pebble's creation is just a spruced-up version of its predecessor. If so, doesn't negate the fact that we're still looking at a remarkable piece of digital wristwear. Experts consider the Steel the most useful business class smartwatch out for iOS and Android user because of its dynamic interface. There is no color touchscreen, but Pebble's e-paper display proves to be the better alternative, producing better contrast and clarity than the standard model. Two advantages to the technology are it makes reading in sunlight easier and stretches battery life up to a week.

2. Moto 360

2015-04-17-1429296661-4563180-2.jpg

Lavish in appearance, serviceable in performance, Motorola's beauty embodies the traits of a quintessential smartwatch. Build quality is unmatched for a wristwatch of its caliber with a circular face coated by Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Android Wear runs smooth with commands and navigation being highly responsive on the round touchscreen. The optical heart-rate monitor surprisingly works well too. However, accessories give the Moto 360 a huge edge, primarily the awesome-looking wireless charging dock that doubles as a luminous alarm clock.

1. LG G Watch R

2015-04-17-1429296684-1018300-1.jpg

This handsome variant of LG's flagship smartwatch might have mimicked Motorola's prolific industrial design, but in reality, its appearance pays homage to the classic diving watches of the past. Feel free to Google the Rolex Submariner for reference. The G Watch R works exactly like most of the Android Wear models on the market, except it carries two distinct features that separate it from the competition: better battery life and a fully circular display. A sharp screen, chic-comfortable wristband, and a full suite of productivity tools like managing calendars and playing music earn it top billing as the best smartwatch out right now.

Teacher With Secret Modeling Career Uses Newfound Attention To Buy Books For Students

This teacher is using his new fame to promote a very selfless cause.

Samuel Pearce, 24, made headlines earlier this month when it was discovered that during his time away from teaching middle school students, he was working as a runway model under the name "Sam Worthen." The Brooklyn-based English teacher has used the buzz he's received for a greater purpose -- raising money to buy books for his students, he told The Huffington Post in an email.

The 24-year-old, who's modeled for big names including Diesel and Alexander McQueen, started a GoFundMe campaign earlier this month, and raised $5,255 in 72 hours. Pearce told HuffPost that he has placed the first order of books, a total of 30 titles, and expects his students to have new ones by Monday.

"There are so many hardworking teachers and students who would benefit from outside funding. I am fortunate to have received publicity," the dedicated teacher told HuffPost of the reception to his campaign. "I am surprised and deeply grateful."

Pearce explained to HuffPost that he's long been brainstorming ways to bring more books to his students, as many of them didn't have copies at home, as well as allow them to request titles, piquing their interest in reading. When news of his two professions broke, he said he felt uneasy about his students finding out about his other identity, but was inspired by his agent to look at things a bit differently.

"I didn't see how my students knowing that I'm a model could possibly benefit them," Pearce said of the initial publicity. "I called my agent, George Brown, who at some point said the phrase 'public cause.' That sparked the connection in my head: to accept publicity and use it to raise money for my kids."

The teacher is challenging his 67 students to read a total of 300 books as a class by mid-June.

While the fundraiser was a success, Pearce explains that many other passionate teachers have trouble getting materials to their students, and hopes that people will help other educators raise money for adequate supplies.

Trendy or Not: A Pop of Color

$
0
0

It's official: color is in this fall!

While bold color statements struck the runways in NYC this past week, the trend of mixing colors from opposite sides of the spectrum does not make it pass the garments.

What comes to mind when you think of the fashion industry? Maybe it is the glitz and glam, or the gorgeous (but overly thin) models, or even the high quality and exceedingly overpriced brand names. Well, what comes to mind when I think of the fashion industry is a community that embraces creativity, change, and diversity through the art of design. To me, fashion is a community of visionaries. Made up of people who want to spread their message through over-the-top fashion shows, such as Chanel's Spring-Summer 2015 feminist protest or the balls out debut of Rick Owens Fall-Winter 2015 Menswear collection, through controversial ad campaigns featuring same sex couples, and even with collaborations that help benefit a fashionable cause.

As I have gained more of an inside look into the fierce world of fashion these past couple of years, my view on the industry has changed -- not for the better. While I endorse and rock this multi-faceted color trend spotted on the Fall-Winter 2015 runways, in magazines, and on my favorite style blogs, it does not make up for the lack of color that exists amongst the professionals in the industry.

Pop quiz! Name six men or women of color in the fashion industry -- they cannot be models. Time's up! If you have one name or a blank list, you are probably not the only one. As a black woman pursuing a career in fashion and having knowledge of the industry, naming six men or women of color off the top of my head was challenging. How does an industry that is built on "creatively evolving" have such a low representation of men and women of color on and off the catwalk? I am aware that white is in every season, but was not aware all white was in too.

In an article in The New York Times written by Eric Wilson called Fashion's Blind Spot, former models, designers, and casting directors state that the representation people of color in the industry has decreased since the 80's and 90's when designers like Calvin Klein, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent cast women of color without question. The iconic model Iman was even quoted in Wilson's article saying, "We have a president and a first lady who are black, you would think things have changed, and then you realize they have not. In fact, things have gone backward." The fashion and style director of W magazine Edward Enninful added, "The fashion industry needs to breed a whole different way of thinking. We need more diverse people working in all facets of the industry."

So, how can the fashion world get more women of color working in all aspects of the industry? You might be thinking they just need to apply and if they are qualified they are in. I wish it were that easy. In the fashion industry, like most industries, you need internships that show some experience from within the field. And unfortunately a majority of fashion internships are unpaid, which often excludes candidates who can only afford paid positions. In an article David Carr wrote for The New York Times called Overlook the Value of Interns at Great Peril he says, "These internships are by their very nature discriminatory. Only a certain kind of young person can afford to spend a summer working for no pay. According to sources at the major publishers, more than one in five of these plum spots typically go to people who are connected one way or another." I cannot tell you how many times I have attended fashion events and conferences where there are over 100 attendees, but only maybe five to seven people of color in the room. Or the numbers of times I have heard people respond to how they got their internship with "through a family friend." I am all about networking and using your connections; it is one of my go to strategies when applying for a position. But, the reality is networking and building connections is a privilege, which leaves a majority of candidates out. I will admit the fashion industry is exclusive when it comes to affording luxury brands, but when it comes to working in the industry there is no reason it should be as or even more unattainable than buying a Hermès Birkin bag.

The change for more diversity must start from the bottom just like people going into the industry are required to do. So, the first and most significant step would be to make more paid internships. According to InternMatch, "paid internships are attractive to diverse candidates -- especially those in debt." The data the site compiled states that a large majority of those who are in debt after earning their bachelor's degree are African American (81 percent) and Latino (67 percent).

Fashion is a billion dollar industry, so it should not be that hard to scrape up some pocket change and pay interns. Like getting those extra yards of unique and bold fabric colors to create a collection that will stand out from others, fashion houses, designers, and publications should start offering more paid internships to stand out and diversify their teams. Brainstorming and collaborating with minds and people from various backgrounds leads to ideas that can target society as a whole -- bring more of an audience to specific brands or publications. Once the industry begins to offer more paid internships, things can evolve. And eventually the fashion industry will truly be creatively evolving on the interior as much as they are on the exterior.

Kelsey Higley's 'Manipulated' Shows What It Would Be Like If You Could Mold Your Body Like Clay

A new video shows one way to make yourself beautiful -- mold your body as though you are made of clay.

Kelsey Higley, a student of Media Art at the University of Oklahoma, created a stop-motion video featuring 126 digitally-altered photos of her body. The result is an eerie video in which Higley appears to reshape herself to fit various ideals of beauty by slimming down her waist and hips, making her breasts bigger and widening her eyes.

Higley's video is part of a larger project called "Manipulated," which includes portraits of women who have been digitally altered to reflect beauty ideals in different time periods.

"The self-portrait video loop works in conjunction with these photographs to depict my own struggle with beauty and how my perceptions change throughout a much shorter period of time," Higley wrote in her project statement.

Higley said that working on the project has helped her love her own body and be more critical of messages she receives about what beautiful really is.

“It felt very therapeutic editing each photo as my appearance became unrecognizable and less human with every click,” Higley told HelloGiggles. “This project reminds me that these things I categorize as my flaws are what makes me human. And I love that.”

According to the actress herself, the Olivia Wilde you see on the big screen does not look the same as the Olivia Wilde you see in real life.

During a conversation with HuffPost Live on Friday, the star discussed how soft lighting boards and other techniques used during filming make actors look like they have perfect complexions.

For her new film "Meadowland," the 31-year-old went makeup-free, and shunned the notion that going au natural could be considered "brave."

Recalling an episode from Showtime's "The Comeback," which highlighted a similar sentiment, Wilde said, "It's so silly. I don't hear people calling men brave for not wearing foundation."

She also expressed concern about all the lighting tricks used during filming, noting that "people are at home watching movies, thinking they're supposed to look a certain way -- that kind of flawless nature that Hollywood promotes in some films."

She added, while "some films call for that [as] a stylistic choice," she doesn't want onscreen artificiality to hinder self-acceptance.

"I feel like when I was an adolescent, that [message] would've been illuminating for me," she said. "I would've appreciated someone letting me know that none of this is real."

Celebrities showed up in droves yesterday to attend Burberry's "London in Los Angeles" event at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. According to a press release, the event was held to celebrate Burberry's first store in LA, which will open in November on Rodeo Drive.

Over 700 people attended the occasion, which kicked off with guests walking through an English garden modeled after the Royal Parks of London. A runway show followed to showcase Burberry's Autumn/Winter 2015 men and women's collections. Aside from the bevy of celebrities in attendance, three particular details about the event made it the "it" event of the night.

1. Naomi Campbell walked the runway.
Naomi Campbell -- one of the current faces of Burberry's Spring/Summer 2015 campaign -- strutted her stuff on the catwalk.

2. Queen Victoria (Beckham) proved her family is the best-dressed in the land.

Jenner posted the photos shortly after the new issue of Teen Vogue, which she covers, hit the Internet. In the May issue, Jenner opens up about her haters, sisters and fashion sense.

"I never really wear makeup unless I need to because when I do my makeup I like to really do my makeup. So I'm never going to spend just 20 minutes, you know?" she said. "A good night out is, like, two and a half hours for full makeup, curling hair, whatever. I love false lashes -- individuals, strips, extensions."

A Leg Up: 3 Steps to Summer-Ready Legs

With warmer temps in full swing and shorter hemlines on the horizon, it's the perfect time to get your stems ready for some fun in the sun.

But with the sunny spells coming and going as they please, a girl has to be ready to flash some leg at a moment's notice. Since days filled with sundresses and bikinis are in your very near future, I decided to get my research on to come up with fail-safe tips to avoid any last-minute leggy disasters. So just add the following exercises and beauty tricks to your regimen and you'll have toned, glowing gams in no time! Promise.

Feel The Burn
I hate to be the barrier of bad news, but if you want gorgeous gams, you'll have to work for them. Luckily for you, the team at Fitting Room NYC has done the legwork for you and found the five best moves for getting your legs looking like Gisele Bündchen's in no time. From dipping down low to lunging to the floor, get ready to feel the burn.

Wax on, Wax off
Any women knows there's nothing worse than having to dare to bare at a moments notice only to be faced with a hairy situation. Enter Spruce & Bond. After years of being fed up with shaving and waxing I finally decided to get my laser on. The beauty of laser is that you can shave in between treatments, so you never have that in-between phase which is perfect for the woman on the go. Regrowth gets progressively lighter and lighter after each laser treatment, so the need to shave generally diminishes during the normal course of 5 treatments. Added Bonus: I found it also reduces the pore size on my legs!

Beautify
Are your legs in need of moisture? Don't flake out. For legs that are ready for their closeup, reach for a silky, lightweight moisturizer with SPF! One of my favorites is Supergoop's Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil because its formulated with reinforcing meadowfoam seed oil, potent to cotrienols, and nourishing argan oil, which prevents moisture loss, neutralizes UV-induced free radical damage, and leaves skin soft and supple. In the words of Holly Thaggard, the CEO of Supergoop, "What better accessory for your favorite sundress than gorgeous skin?"

Are your ready legs? Start walkin...

8 Green Goods to Celebrate Earth Day

$

Outside of the big holidays, Earth Day is one of my favorites. It's partially because I'm Californian, where we grew up recycling and attending Farmers' Markets and repurposing goods long before any of the above became trendy. But mostly, it's because I fear for our planet, and any day we can celebrate her and think of ideas of helping her is a good thing.

Small changes over a long period of time do add up, and that's not just a catchphrase. I remember when I started carrying my own, reusable grocery bags to the store. I was one of the only shoppers doing so, and people looked at me like I was going to raid and run. There was also the time we switched to re-chargeable batteries. Or the summer we bought the composter.

At each point in time, someone or another thought I was crazy. (And by the way, for those thinking about it? Composting doesn't stink.)

Sales of green products are soaring. When you see these new, eco-friendly fashion, kitchen and lifestyle alternatives below you'll see why.

1. RECYCLABLE BELTS
2015-04-17-1429245911-9905359-ScreenShot20150417at12.00.28AM.png

If you want to add a color accent to your outfit this spring, these bright plastic belts by Winky Designs are made from 100% recyclable plastic: even down to the small parts and packaging. They come in styles for men, women and kids and 15 colorways, and don't go off in metal detectors for the frequent jet setter or "super secret spy," as my son would say!

$25, Recyclable Plastic Belt, WinkyDesigns.com

2. LINEN FOOD COVERS
2015-04-17-1429276079-7996641-SuperFinallinenfoodcoverssetoffivemadeinusa4.jpg

While I'm really good about saving leftovers, I cringe when I run out of containers and have to reach for the foil or plastic wrap. Here's a long-term solution that works great for food storage or picnics: all-natural, hand-sewn linen covers with an elastic band that fit a variety of dishes, and are washable and reusable.

$59, Set of 5 Linen Food Covers; kaufmann-mercantile.com

3. UPCYCLED SARI THROW

Now that spring is well underway, it's time to tuck away the faux fur blanket in favor of something light and bright that can still ward off evening shivers. Recycled saris are patched together with the purpose of making this lovely and colorful throw of gorgeous material that would've otherwise been discarded.

4. BENTO BOX

I've delighted in featuring the reusable stainless steel PlanetBox bento-style lunch box on the Today Show before, and now they've teamed up with Jack Johnson for Earth Day-themed magnets he designed that decorate its exterior. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of the Aloha magnets benefit the Kōkua Hawai'i Foundation, which supports environmental education in schools. Plus, you'll use less packing waste in your lunch prep.

5. TABLE BRUSH

My daughter loves toast and eats it near daily for breakfast, but her aftermath of crumbs could build a small, ancient ruin. Rather than reach for a paper towel and spray (or my fairly ratty rag), here's a new thought: a table brush that's compact enough to stow away as a single unit. I'm fairly certain that this is cute enough that the kids will be fighting over who get to clean the crumbles.

$45, Beechwood Horsehair Table Brush; kaufmann-mercantile.com

6. UPCYCLED CROSS-BODY TOTE
2015-04-17-1429246126-93825-VerloopCollage.jpg

This woven, cross-body bag is created from recycled plastic that in its former life helped harvest seaweed. Now not only do I love seaweed, but also I adore a cute bag that's impervious to the elements and has a seafarer's style complete with carabiner and a chic nylon cord strap (also repurposed). Available in 4 colors.

$75, Favela cross-body bag; VerloopKnits.com

7. CARAFE & TUMBLERS
2015-04-17-1429246172-7389411-ScreenShot20150416at11.13.56AM.png

Do you ever wonder what your paper, glass and plastic turns into after you place it in the recycle bin? Well, here's one exquisite example. For these stunning carafe and tumblers, recycled glass is smashed to pieces and then re-melted into molten glass and blown.

$69, Phoenician Green Carafe; TenThousandVillages.com
$29 each, Green Tumbler; TenThousandVillages.com

8. ECO-FRIENDLY FEEDING

Back when I was growing up, my folks tried in their own way to be kind to Mother Earth (though I'm not quite sure how eating out of BPA margarine containers worked out for me). Now there is the mod-line JJ Rabbit, which uses recycled plant fibers to make things like Cuppies with cute critters inside. Learning to eat was never more biodegradable (which the Cuppies are)!

Zayn Malik Thanks One Direction In First Public Appearance Since Leaving The Group

Since Zayn Malik announced his departure from One Direction at the end of March, he's had yet to make a public appearance -- until now.

On Friday, the singer was presented with the Outstanding Achievement in Music honor at the Asian Awards in London. Sporting a newly shaved head and nose ring, Malik took the stage to thank his mom and dad for "making me Asian." And the singer also gave thanks to his former bandmates.

“I’d also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys I ever met while being in the band and doing all the amazing things that I did,” Malik said. “Some of the things that we did will stay with me for the rest of my life, and I thank you for that. Here’s to the future!”

Malik first revealed he would be leaving One Direction in a post on the band's Facebook page. He later told British newspaper The Sun, "I feel like I've let the fans down but I can't do this anymore." The rest of the band also spoke with The Sun earlier this month, saying they were "gutted" over Malik's departure but that they'd continue to make music.

Earlier this week, Nike released its #betterforit ad spot, which said what we're all pretty much thinking when we work out or go to the gym: What the hell am I doing? Nike has been empowering women for over 40 years and to show where the company has come from, the company also published some of its ads from the past decades this week.

Among some of our favorite women athletes featured in the ads are former WNBA players Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes, as well as women's soccer legend, Mia Hamm.

It's not hard to be impressed by a supermodel. Especially when said model is Joan Smalls.

The Puerto Rican beauty took our breath away this week, as always, when she stepped out at Vanity Fair's 2015 Tribeca Film Festival party in New York City. The combination of her sleek hair and bold lip is a look we can all emulate, sans the supermodel status.

In addition, we were also blown away by beauty moments that came courtesy of Scarlett Johansson, Rose Byrne and few more celeb favorites.

Check out all the ladies below and tell us which looks you love in the comments section.

ASSEMBLAGE: Meet Queer Artist And Cultural Visionary Love Bailey

$

“ASSEMBLAGE“ is an inquiry into the different ways artists utilize performance and technology to explore and express different notions of identity. An effort to push forward marginalized artists with a focus on people of color, non-western nationalities and those along the queer/trans spectrum, “ASSEMBLAGE” provides a platform for analysis of how art and performance intersect with the lives of these individuals who are visibly and openly existing in the digital age. This is the fourth installment.

Love Bailey is a queer artist, designer, performer and cultural visionary with heavy ties to the worlds of fashion and music. Having worked with the likes of Fiona Apple, Rihanna, Azealia Banks and Britney Spears, Love Bailey's career recently brought the artist into a new realm of experience that focuses heavily on bringing like-minded artists and creatives together in a new practice in queer community culture: the formation of an artist community on a ranch outside of Los Angeles.

Love Bailey's identity and passion for creative exploration finds its roots in his relationship with his showgirl grandmother, Betty Bailey, calling her his guiding light -- his source of energy that gave birth to his eccentricities. "Dressing for pleasure and channeling characters was part of our daily routine," Love Bailey explained. "Boundaries, rules, and judgement had no place in our lives as we fetishized about outrageously high heels, painted ourselves with every shade of lipstick, and danced to our own beat of unconditional love."

Love Bailey followed in the footsteps of his grandmother's career and began training as a dancer, eventually leading to his heavy involvement in the fashion world.

Following a rich career of glamour and luxury, Love Bailey recently shifted the focus of his work away from the fashion and music industries to the formation of Savage Ranch. The ranch is an artist community that serves as a central meeting point for creatives from around the world to come together and live, create and invest in community. In the eyes of Love Bailey, Savage Ranch represents much more than just a change in personal career direction -- it is a shift to a more humanistic and compassionate focus to his work as a whole.

"I see my life transitioning and moving into a genre where it’s not about selling garments anymore -- it’s about creating a lifestyle that inspires people to be better humans," he told The Huffington Post. "To enrich themselves with beauty and light and life and love and making meals together, sharing stories together and exploring what it means to be part of a community -– to love someone and be present with them -- and what it means to be present."

With seven people currently living at Savage Ranch, the community is in its early, formative days. However, the goal is to create a space where artists can create, thrive and collaborate with a focus on the humanity of their work, while not necessarily having to exist day-to-day in an urban environment.

Manifested by Love Bailey & Remy Holwick/DP: Dylan Gordan // Family Members pictured: Simon Seapony, B.J. Dini Megan Edwards & Andi, Kyle Kupres, Master Slather

The changing nature of Love Bailey's career doesn't necessarily represent a de-emphasis on performance and the way that intersects with his queer identity. Rather, the role of performance is changing to fit a form of cultural production that emphasizes humanity through a socially responsible lens.

"For me, performing is a natural gesture," Love Bailey elaborated. "It’s not something one does on stage anymore. For me, performing is performing to my best ability in this moment right now -- who am I, what am I, what am I projecting, what am I serving, what’s the vibration I’m giving to the universe. That’s my performance and that’s what I’ve learned from being a competition showgirl to being a better human. I think that transition is my focus now."

love bailey

This changing role of performance, in the eyes of Love Bailey, involves turning a critical lens onto the worlds of fashion and music that he is currently moving away from. That is, questioning what purpose these industries are actually serving and how disconnected they seem to feel from a compassionate understanding of the human condition.

"Knowing what the fashion industry is and breaking it down into the illusion -- it’s not the fantasy that we were sold as kids. Like, I just want to live in the open field and let my hair down and slather it up. You can’t do that in fashion because you have to sell a certain thing, pose a certain way and there’s this hierarchy that’s been created that’s not really doing anything for the good of humanity. We’re constantly putting forth Vogue after Vogue and it's this revolving door of filth. Especially in the digital age, you would think that we would lessen. We have the knowledge to be better humans and to work towards a better environment but we choose not to use those tools that we learn."

love bailey

One of the most compelling parts of Savage Ranch is the opportunity to explore queerness and engage in cultural production in a very isolated setting, but then amplify this work to the world via the Internet and social media. Artists no longer have to live in urban meccas like New York City or Los Angeles in order to make the value of their work known. In fact, it is precisely the isolated nature of Savage Ranch that allows for this new experiment in queer community culture to manifest in such a unique way.

"The Internet and social media are these wonderful things that can be destructive tools or positive tools," Love Bailey continued. "For me, I’m able to switch gears into focusing my efforts onto something that’s bettering humanity and not get consumed in 'what’s my daily selfie.' That’s not my fantasy. Our community, at the ranch, we share this similar vision where we can come together and build a life that hopefully one day will be sustainable and that we can give back to the universe what we take from it. A lot of times people, especially in America, they just take and they don’t give. The ranch goes beyond that built-in audience of a social network -- it encourages you to look beyond yourself."

VHS acid fantasy curated by Marina Fini & Tristan Wheeler featuring Ivy Levan // Music by Edward Vigiletti

Love Bailey and Savage Ranch represent an important intersection of the future of queer performance and technology. As we continue to deplete the world's natural resources and isolate ourselves from one another within the framework of the digital age, community-based efforts to create and build work with an emphasis on social responsibility will become more important than ever.

"The universe will have its plan and that’s something you have to let manifest itself," Love Bailey explained. "But I want Savage Ranch to be a sustainable farm where we can grow and cultivate the land and also share an artist collective where people can fly in from other parts of the world and create with a working studio, a recording studio -- anything anyone would need to create their fantasy. I want to make that happen. I want to see to it that their fantasy gets brought to life. That’s the fantasy."
