The 4 Things In My Closet I Could Never Get Rid Of

$

Warmer weather finally convinced me that it was time to put up the winter sweaters and get out my summer clothes. Working in my closet is not a job I enjoy, most likely because I am a sentimental fool. Every season I go through each piece of clothing and ask myself if it's a keeper or if I should give it away. After all, if you haven't worn something for a year or two it's time to get it out of your closet. Over the years I have gotten better about giving things away, but I still struggle. Our children were in high school before I was able to get rid of their baby clothes.

High Class Hoarder

I heard my teenage nephew call my sister-in-law a "high class hoarder." I asked him what he meant and he said every Saturday his mother goes to yard sales in nice neighborhoods and brings home "bargains" that she just can't live without. I got a chuckle out of that and the word "hoarder" made me think of my grandmother. If you have ever known anyone who lived through the Great Depression you will understand why my grandmother kept the wrapping off of Christmas presents, folded it neatly and stuck it in a drawer to use the next year. She also kept every scrap of food that wasn't eaten at each meal. It didn't matter if it was two bites of beans, it went in an empty margarine tub and into the refrigerator. Maybe not being able to get rid of things is just a genetic trait I inherited, I don't know. What I do know for sure is that there are four things in my closet that I will never give away.

Grandma's Blue Flannel Bath Robe

My grandmother was an amazing woman. When she married my grandfather they moved into a little white farm house with his mother, who I called Ma. Ma was wheelchair bound and my grandparents had to lift her from the bed to her chair, to the toilet and then back. It had to be hard to be a full-time caregiver and a new bride. Grandma took care of Ma until Ma's death at the age of 96. By the time Ma died Grandma had bore three babies in the little white house and raised them to adulthood in addition to everything else she did.

Farm life back then was much harder than it is now. My grandparent had a few milk cows and lots of chickens. They grew a huge garden that hoed and kept weeded. After harvest time Grandma canned vegetables and kept them in the cellar where it was cool. There was no air conditioning in the house and the only source of heat in the winter came from two wood stoves.

Grandma lived to be 89 and up until she was 85 she could work circles around me. She looked like a soft, fluffy marshmallow on the outside, but inside she was made of steel. Grandma's mother died when she was only three years old, so she had no memories of her mother. Her husband, my grandfather, died in 1976. Grandma's only daughter (my mother) died in 1990 of colon cancer and a year later my mother's older brother died. Grandma's heart was broken with each passing but she found strength from within and from her faith and she continued on.

She lived with us the last several years of her life and helped me raise my children. One of my most vivid memories of her is when our twins were about two years old. They slept upstairs and Grandma knew that carrying them down the stairs would be too dangerous so the three of them would sit on the stairs and scoot all the way down. Grandma would be in the middle with the twins on either side of her.

A few years before Grandma died I took her picture sitting on her porch reading her Bible. She wasn't too happy about it because she was wearing her blue bathrobe. It was early morning and she hadn't gotten dressed yet. I loved the picture and took it to a lady I knew whose hobby was painting. She painted a watercolor from the snapshot I made and today it hangs in my house and Grandma's blue bathrobe has a permanent place in my closet.

The Silver Disco Dress

I graduated from high school in 1974 and my college years were filled with disco parties. I wasn't the best dancer, but I wasn't the worst either. I had enough rhythm to do the Bump and the Electric Slide but that was about it. My friends and I went to the movies and fell in love with John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. We listened (and danced) to the Bee Gees hits, Stayin Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, and Night Fever over and over again.

I'm not sure when I bought the silver disco dress with the slits up the sides but I know I wore it to lots of dances. I took it with me on a trip to New York when I tagged along with my mother and her friends. And when my dad won a trip to Hawaii (he was a Ford tractor salesman) my brother and I went too, and so did the dress. I wore it to a night club in Honolulu that our parents took us to because my mother was a Don Ho fan. The only song I remember him singing was Tiny Bubbles. Don Ho sang like I danced; without much talent but with a whole lot of enthusiasm.

My mother spoiled me while I was in college and I always had nice clothes. My girlfriends loved to borrow my things and I was more than willing to share. One of the most popular items in my closet was my silver disco dress. That dress went to more parties than any other piece of clothing I ever owned. Just for old times sake I took it off the hanger and tried it on today. No one but the dog saw me and he wasn't impressed.

"I sure had a lot of fun in this dress," I said to the dog. He yawned, closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

The Mom Shirt

One year for Mother's Day my husband surprised me with a tee-shirt. What made this shirt so special was that a lady had embroidered our children's faces and names on it. Even their eyes were the right color! I wore the shirt proudly and would probably still be wearing it had a drop of bleach not been spilled on it and eaten through the material. The faces on the shirt were little, just like our children were at the time. To me, that shirt symbolizes their childhood and how proud I was (and still am) to be their mom.

There's no way in the world I'm ever getting rid of it.

The Basketball Shirt

Our twin boys are our babies because they were born last but they grew to be 6 ft. 8 inches tall. From the time they were old enough to play sports basketball was a part of their life and ours. My husband and I spent countless hours taking them to practices and games. My husband coached their little league teams and drove them to different states when they played on travel teams. We hardly ever missed a game and when their high school team made it to the State Class A Tournament we couldn't have been more excited. They were known locally as The Twin Towers and watching them dunk was more fun than dancing in my disco dress.

I have a good friend who owned a tee-shirt shop and she made me a special shirt to wear to the twins games. Looking at it reminds me of all the joy our boys brought us during their basketball career.

Sentimental Fool

I told you at the beginning of this story that I was a sentimental fool. I know it's silly to keep an old bath robe, a disco dress, a shirt with a hole in it and a basketball tee shirt that I will never wear to another ballgame, but the fact of the matter is that in a way they tell the story of my life. Looking at them I remember my grandmother's love and the powerful influence she had on my life. I reflect on the youthful exuberance and freedom of my teen and college years. The shirts bring back happy memories of when our children were young.

I just can't, or I won't, get rid of them. I suspect the sentimental things a person can't bear to part with says more about them than the items they give away.

So tell me, what's in your closet?

ASSEMBLAGE: Meet Queer Artist And Musician AB Soto

$

0
“ASSEMBLAGE“ is an inquiry into the different ways artists utilize performance and technology to explore and express different notions of identity. An effort to push forward marginalized artists with a focus on people of color, non-western nationalities and those along the queer/trans spectrum, “ASSEMBLAGE” provides a platform for analysis of how art and performance intersect with the lives of these individuals who are visibly and openly existing in the digital age. This is the sixth installment.

AB Soto is a queer artist and musician whose work complicates the boundaries of fashion, performance and identity. Having grown up as a Latin boy in East Los Angeles, Soto's music is heavily informed by both his ties to Mexican culture and his background in dance and fashion design.

Heavily visual, the work of AB Soto was birthed from his refusal to fit into the stereotypical categories and roles Hollywood tried to force him into as a working Latin professional. After continually hitting walls that didn't allow him to live and work authentically in Los Angeles, Soto took a step back and began focusing on what he truly wanted to accomplish as an artist and performer.

"I've always wanted to redefine what it means to be gay, as well as what it means to be Latin and gay in these times," Soto told The Huffington Post. "So I do a lot of that in my work -- I try to kind of play around with the idea of 'this is what you think I should look like.' Well, I’m going to spin that around and create a dialogue as to what people think any stereotype should look like. It’s more like a commentary that I’m trying to create."

At the heart of Soto's work is a complication of both queerness and gendered expectations of masculinity prevalent in Latin culture. Soto refuses to be categorized or relegated to a specific mode of performance or genre of music. As a result, viewers can see influences of not only his Latin heritage, but also rap, house music and dance music within his highly-visual work.

"Both of my parents are from Mexico so that makes me 100 percent Mexican but born in the U.S.," Soto continued. "Especially in my latest album, for me, I wanted to go back to my heritage and kind of really embrace where I came from -- a low-income household, growing up in the hood and learning to be comfortable with my sexuality. I feel like I want to come out as a gay designer, as a dancer. I want to come out in a variety of different genres of music. I want to be openly gay in all of those areas. But at the same time the last thing that I really needed to do was kind of go back home and really come out to my roots. So, in particular with this album, I’m kind of challenging my Latin community to consider: 'Hey, this is who I am. This is who we are and there’s a lot of us out here. Here I am.'”

Soto aaims to disrupt historically straight or heteronormative genres of music or ways of being in the world through his work. Beyond just the scope of Latin culture, Soto wants to challenge mainstream ideas surrounding what different artists should like and talk about in their work. This can be seen through the layers of nuance in Soto's fashion and lyrics, as well as the overarching brand of AB Soto as a whole.

"I like to sum up my work as performance art," Soto explained. "I’m playing around with costumes, I’m playing around with masculinity, femininity. I’m playing around with styles of music that, you know, in the past have only been for straight people or a specific race – whether it’s rap, whether it’s house, whether it’s salsa. For me, tapping into all of these styles of this music, styles of fashion, different cultures -- it’s a performance in the sense that I am all of those things because I’m a product of our generation and growing up in the United States. It’s a performance because it’s me telling a story... the performance is basically the way I can communicate about all of these things visually.

soto

Throughout all of this, the Internet has played a formative role in the development and success of AB Soto. Social media and YouTube gave Soto a platform to connect with fans and present his work in an authentic way without having to meet the expectations of a contract or business deal. Both the Internet and technology allowed Soto to maintain agency and control over his image and brand and, in turn, generate a dialogue surrounding the way he pushes cultural expectations surrounding queerness and identity.

"The Internet has basically made it really easy to create authentic art because you're just one upload away from posting a photo or a music video that says who you really are," Soto elaborated. "It's an immediate contact to the world, if you will, and the fans ultimately are the ones that dictate what they like. Nobody likes to be advertised to, nobody wants to feel like they're forced to listen to a specific artist for however many years -– it becomes really easy to create a fanbase that’s genuine and authentic and it’s not purchased through advertised money... if I were to wait for a label to sign me under my terms I’d still be waiting for that. They want me to be another stereotypical, Latin recording artist. I could’ve sat there and tried to change their minds or I could just go balls to the wall and create my own work and let the public decide for themselves. The Internet helped a lot with that."

Soto is currently in Los Angeles promoting the release of his new album "MR. SOTO," a body of work exploring the nuances of being a queer person of color navigating the spaces and industries that Soto operates in.

"I think that we are all complex," Soto continued. "That is, if we allow ourselves to be complex and think outside of the box and try a little harder to not be so one dimensional. For me, if I put that out there I hope I can inspire other people to be just as evolved."

The Business and Versatility of Striped Underwear

$

Striped underwear can enlist several thoughts: nautical looks; a stern businessman; or perhaps a young, preppy college student. This is why stripes - and in particular, striped underwear - can be extremely versatile. The look also (surprisingly) works well on most body types, and on the young and the older.

Our recent photoshoot captured 13 striped underwear looks - its main purpose? To showcase the trend's adaptability, of course.

Classic striped designs were highlighted by brands Calvin Klein and Blackspade, both of which veer towards more classic looks, regardless of trend. Blackspade interprets stripe width in new and interesting ways, and the Calvin Klein boxer brief looks purple, but it's actually an optical illusion - it is, in fact, a weave of cobalt and red orange stripes.

British underwear brands, James Tudor and Aware Soho, play with red and black stripes, contrasting them with white waistbands. The three-button fly, however, are the real stand-out aspect to the James Tudor's.

The Jor and Agacio brands are the sportiest by far - these two utilize pastels and white.

But our favorite pair - which is, of course, the sexiest - is from the Male Power Radial Sport Collection. It is zippered with dual tone, zigzag stripes.

Whatever your stripes preference, be it zigzag or classic with limited accessories, any of these looks are sure to satisfy your grown-up underwear drawer.

Business in the front, party in the back?

All eyes were on Natalie Portman and her daring dress at the photocall for "A Tale of Love and Darkness," her directorial debut, during the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Sunday. The 33-year-old rocked an eye-catching Rodarte dress, which featured intricate floral beading and a sheer backside that revealed Portman's black underwear:

18 Fashion And Beauty Truths Only Boomer Women Understand

$
0
0
1. Comfortable shoes is a contradiction of terms.
At a certain point, you will order shoes by the dozens from Zappos and ship them all back the day they arrive. The problem is that shoes don't fit you anymore, at least not stylish shoes. Bunions, plantar fasciitis, corns and funky toenails all get in between you and dressing your feet prettily. You will laugh when a younger woman suggests that the office party is just two hours long so maybe you can squeeze your tootsies into a pair of heels. You will laugh, but you will cry on the inside at the foot-genocide she is suggesting you commit.

Whoever comes up with a comfortable version of trendy shoes will be a very, very rich woman.

2. Your feet hurt, even without shoes on sometimes.

Foot pain is real and 71 percent of people aged 65 or older report having foot pain and problems with their feet. Women are four times more likely as men to experience foot problems, probably because of their enslavement to wearing high heels. According to the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 88 percent of women wear shoes too small for their feet.

Here's a simple life truth: If your feet hurt, nothing is fun.

3. The only thing worse than wearing no makeup is wearing too much.

Some days, nothing says "hello dark circles" louder than a face without makeup. But then there is the other end of the spectrum: When older women apply too much. The scary clown look is a bad look for people of all ages.

4. Eyeliner can't be applied while wearing glasses.

Not even a contortionist can do this. Truth. The result is that you must do it blind and be prepared for some strange looks, or get two pairs of cheap reading glasses and punch out the left lens on one pair and the right lens on the other. Sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous.

5. A short skirt is one that stops at your knees.
At some point, back fat expands and becomes knee fat; no, there is no science behind this phenomenon. Just know that if your skirt gets too short, you expose your knee fat.

6. The 3-inch shorts your teen daughter wears are not a shareable clothing item.

7. Forever 21 does not sell a single stitch of clothing you should ever consider wearing.
Not even those little camisoles were designed with boomer women in mind. Plus the music they play while you shop will induce a migraine.

8. Bathing suits are best shopped for alone.
Absolute preference should be given to the stores that have skinny mirrors. Bathing suits may be the last frontier for online shopping. Your UPS deliveryman can only carry so much, you know.

9. When you find a good pair of jeans, you are inclined to buy three pair. Don't.
Whereas a single pair of bell bottom jeans may have worked for your entire high school and college life, jean styles nowadays change rapidly. Yes, this makes jeans-shopping an ongoing event into perpetuity. On the way to the cemetery, you will ask the hearse driver if he minds stopping so you can shop a final time for jeans.

10. Bury all your mom jeans. Bury them alongside the ones that proclaim not to be mom jeans too.

11. Bras that fasten in the front are your new best friend.
Bonus points if the underwire -- and every bra you own will have an underwire -- doesn't leave a mark.

12. We may have really been on to something when we all burned our bras.
See #11.

13. Victoria's Secret is really just for women without breasts.
Are they serious?

14. You will try many face creams in your quest for the Holy Grail of wrinkle-removers.

Some will work, some will work for awhile, and some will just be a waste of money and swear you off face creams -- until you hear about a new one.

Do we really expect that magic comes in a jar? Apparently we do since the U.S. market for anti-aging products is expected to top $114 billion this year, says market research firm Global Industry Analysts.

15. You will spread the news of a good face cream the way a wildfire spreads in a California drought.

When you find a winner, you will rush to call all your friends and send them selfies of your new slightly wrinkle-less face. You will send closeups of the crow's feet around your eyes and insist that your friends must tell you if they don't see a difference after just two weeks of use!!!!

16. You color your hair more often than the box says to.
When you first start coloring your gray, once every six or eight weeks does the trick. Eventually you pretend that the "don't color more often than whatever" directions are just someone in the FDA covering his behind. You will color every 10 days and wear a hat if it goes any longer than that.

17. You will weep real tears when they discontinue your hair color.

L'Oreal likes to mess with boomer women. There is no other possible explanation for why they discontinued their temporary hair color without a replacement product ready to bring to market. Millions of women are engaged in a bidding war on eBay for the remaining boxes.

18. You may read a ton of stories about how invisible you are, but you don't really believe them.

Sexy is in the eye of the beholder -- if you see yourself as sexy, then sexy you are. Sore feet and all.

Jennifer Lopez has done it again. Just two weeks after wowing us in a sheer dress at the Met Gala, she stepped out for the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night in an equally revealing design.

The white-and-nude Charbel Zoe gown was embellished with strategically placed beads to cover just enough of Lopez's breasts and behind. However there was plenty of cleavage on display and her midriff was completely exposed. The singer/actress is known for her barely-there red carpet style, so we shouldn't be surprised.

What do you think of J.Lo's latest look that leaves almost nothing to the imagination -- tell us in the comments section below. And make sure to check out all the red carpet moments in the slideshow.

Wow, wow, wow.

Celine Dion looked amazing as she walked the red carpet at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday night. The 47-year-old stunned in a green leather dress, which featured a higher-than-usual thigh-high slit.

Dion later took the stage to present Top Male Artist to Sam Smith, and accepted the award on his behalf, as he's recovering from vocal cord surgery in New York.

Thirty years ago, while cooped up in Saturday morning detention, a group of teens learned that people categorize one another in certain ways, and discovered that each one of them is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal.

Earlier this year "The Breakfast Club" celebrated its 30th anniversary and at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, the film's star Molly Ringwald introduced the band Simple Minds to perform their 1985 hit song "Don't You (Forget About Me)," which plays in both the opening credits and final scene of the movie.

The band got the crowd singing along to the 80s hit and it looked like Ringwald, who joked about wanting to be in Taylor Swift's club, got her wish:

They're just so pretty!

Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea took to the stage at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday for the live debut of their new collaboration, "Pretty Girls." With a small army of backup dancers behind her, Spears danced around stage in a black catsuit complete with cut-outs, and Azalea delivered her cheeky rap verse clad in a silver crop top and matching miniskirt.

Azalea, 24, is nominated for 12 Billboard awards this year, including Top New Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Rap Artist.

The pop princess and the Australian rapper released the colorful, '80s-themed video for the track last week.

Earlier this month, Spears spoke to New York radio station z100 about the concept behind "Pretty Girls."

"I wanted to do a girl anthem. Something that was very girl empowering and that was kinda funny. I thought a whole take on valley girls and just kind of making fun of that would be fun for us to do," she said.

Everyone looked like they were in need of a tissue on Sunday night after Imagine Dragons' tribute to the late Ben E. King at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

It was a hometown show for the band, who definitely managed to get tears flowing with their cover of Kings' "Stand By Me," despite the song's promise not to shed a tear.

King died on April 30 at the age of 76 and the band had previously covered his 1961 hit during a visit to SiriusXM Studios in February.

Chrissy Teigen joined Ludacris to host the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, and in between jokes about her brother -- err, husband -- John Legend, she accidentally tripped an unsuspecting woman while making her way on stage. She played it off like a champ, though she seemed to notice the woman go flying. Cosmopolitan's Amy Odell caught the moment:

Taylor Swift Tops Maxim's 2015 Hot List

It doesn't get any hotter than Taylor Swift, according to Maxim.

The 25-year-old superstar was named No.1 on the magazine's annual Hot List, and appears as the covergirl for its June issue.

This is Swift's first time appearing on the cover of a men's magazine, and if it's a pairing that surprises you, the singer's participation might have something to do with the arrival of Maxim's new editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear, who has set out to rebrand the magazine that's best known for photos of scantily clad celebrities.

So when your latest album has already sold more than 4.6 million copies and you've been nominated for practically every award out there, just how does it feel to be named No.1 on Maxim's Hot List?

Swift told the magazine it's an "incredible compliment."

"This year has been my favorite year of my life so far. I got to make an album exactly the way I wanted to make it. I got to put it out exactly the way I dreamed of putting it out. Every one of these whims and ideas came to fruition. The videos -- I'm proud of those, I'm proud of the tour. I'm proud of the way this has all happened," she explained. "In the midst of all that, this is really nice. it really feels like a wonderful celebration of my favorite year."

'Keeping Up With The Kardashians: About Bruce' Was Just As Emotional As Expected

In the weeks since Bruce Jenner came out as transgender in a "20/20" interview with Diane Sawyer, his children have offered nothing but messages of support.

But that support has come after many long discussions, confusion and tears, as we learned on the first part of a two-part special, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians: About Bruce." In their most real and vulnerable moments, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian share with the world their attempts to understand Bruce's transition.

Shot in the weeks prior to Bruce's "20/20" interview, the special mostly explores getting to know "Her," through gifts of shoes, talks of pedicures and style questions, juxtaposed against the sisters' fears of losing their father once they learn that he intends to fully transition sooner rather than later.

While Bruce had sat down with all his kids in recent months revealing that he's transgender, viewers come to understand that it's the actual process of transitioning that's hardest for the family to deal with, and that they feel he's been less upfront with them about.

“Are you you planning on not being Bruce anytime soon?” Khloe asks.

“That’s quite possible, yeah,” Bruce replies.

As Khloe and Kendall react with tears to the news, the camera cuts to Khloe explaining in her confessional:

“My sisters and I knew from whenever we found out years ago that Bruce was a cross dresser," she says. "But we were never told that he was going to fully transition and become a woman.”

Much of the episode is dedicated to the need for better communication between Bruce and his children, which is highlighted as they gather at his house in Malibu to confront him about what he has and hasn't told them.

"Bruce is under the impression that he told all of us everything. We had to find out that Bruce is fully transitioning in spring. He claims that he told us all of this. And that's what I'm pissed about," Khloe explains to her sisters.

"I've never heard that. For sure. I just think that if you are doing a huge thing like that, you know, that we should know and prepare ourselves," Kourtney tells Bruce.

An argument soon breaks out between Khloe and Bruce and she accuses him of lying to them.

"I'm not lying, Khloe! I just didn't tell you," he says. "I didn't lie, I didn't say wasn't doing this or I wasn't doing that. I just didn't tell you. It's not an easy subject to talk to you about."

The goal of the meeting was for everyone to "be on the same page" as Kim puts it, and eventually Bruce ends up laying out all the procedures he plans to get. There are more tears as the conversation progresses.

"The greatest thing in my life I've ever done is raise my children. It's my greatest accomplishment," says Bruce. "I got everybody out of the nest, everybody's doing great. I've got to deal with myself. The last thing in the world I want to do is hurt anyone of you. Maybe if I'm not honest, it's because I'm afraid to talk to you about this subject because I know it hurts. I understand that. Am I doing it right, Khloe? You can never do this right. There is no right way to do this."

Part 2 of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians: About Bruce" airs May 18 at 9:00 p.m. ET on E!

Note: Though Jenner has come out as, “for all intents and purposes, a woman,” he has not yet indicated that he would like to be known by a new name or female pronouns, so this story uses male pronouns.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner did not get the warmest reception when they took the stage to introduce Kanye West's performance at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night.

The Jenner girls were seemingly booed by some people in the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas when they introduced their brother-in-law, who performed a heavily censored medley of "All Day" and "Black Skinhead."

The sisters attended Sunday night's event with designer Olivier Rousteing. Kendall Jenner rocked a piece from his upcoming Balmain x H&M collection.

Laverne Cox Stuns And Speaks The Truth On The 2015 Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet

Laverne Cox ruled the 2015 Billboard Music Awards red carpet for more reasons than one.

The "Orange Is The New Black" star has time and time again proved her sartorial savvy, so it was no shock that she looked gorgeous in a white, studded, form-fitting Marc Bower dress with Paul Morelli jewelry. What does come as a pleasant surprise, is that the actress, who exudes confidence both on and off screen, has a pretty fantastic way of dealing with her flaws.

In an interview with Giuliana Rancic, Cox explains that while she is comfortable with her looks, she can be pretty critical of herself, too. "In that nitpickiness, I also try to celebrate myself and love myself. In every moment, even if I find a flaw, I have to love that flaw today," she said.

And just like that, Cox gives us yet another reason to admire her.

Love Disney? Love sneakers? If you answered yes to both questions, Vans' upcoming collection is for you.

The shoe and apparel brand is releasing a Disney collaboration called "The Young at Heart Collection," featuring shoes covered in fan favorites like Mickey, Minnie, Winnie the Pooh and Donald Duck. The line includes Vans classic sneaker styles along with accessories including socks and backpacks.

This isn't the company's first frolic into the wonderful world of Disney. The animated gang hit the pavement back in 2013, when Vans released a footwear-only collection. This time around, the characters have their own apparel sets, so essentially you can deck yourself out in Donald Duck from head to toe.

Check out images from the collection below, which hits Vans retail stores and becomes available online in June.

Here's How Much A Woman's Period Will Cost Her Over A Lifetime

$
0
0
A recent experiment shed light on the "pink tax," or the price discrepancy that comes with purchasing female-branded products that are essentially identical to male products. But how about the extra cost that comes with a biological function women cannot control?

Women's monthly periods are costing them much more than the pain of menstrual cramps. Between tampons, pain relievers and heating pads to soothe the aches, the costs associated with that magical time of the month add up. Aunt Flo is one expensive lady.

Though the numbers may vary slightly for you due to local price changes, or your superhuman ability to avoid unwanted stains, having a period is a hefty cost that half the population will never have to pay -- and this doesn't even include the cost of the regular doctor's exams to keep your birth control prescription up to date, and your reproductive health in check.

finalperiod

On average, a woman has her period from three to seven days and the average woman menstruates from age 13 until age 51. That means the average woman endures some 456 total periods over 38 years, or roughly 2,280 days with her period -- 6.25 years of her life.

Midol
You can only take up to six caplets a day, and cramps usually persist for two days. There are 40 caplets per package of Midol, which costs $8.99 at Walgreens.

12 caplets x 456 periods = 5,472 caplets. At 40 caplets per container, that's 136.8 Midol purchases x $8.99 = $1,229.83

Tampons
There are other options, but 70 percent of women use tampons. You're instructed to change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours, so we'll use 6 hours as an average. A box containing 36 tampons costs $7 at Walgreens.

1 tampon every 6 hours = 4 tampons per day x 5 days of a period = 20 tampons per cycle x 456 periods = 9,120 tampons. At 36 tampons per box, that's 253.3 boxes x $7 = $1,773.33

Panty liners
Some women prefer pads and some combine tampons with panty liners as a backup. For our purposes, we'll say that women use an average of five liners per period. A box containing 36 panty liners costs $7 at Walgreens.

5 liners per cycle x 456 periods = 2,280 pads. At 36 pads per box, that's 63.3 boxes x $7 = $443.33

New underwear due to stains
Leaking happens to nearly all women, usually causing permanent stains on your underwear. Women own an average of 34 pairs of underwear, and we'll assume each woman bleeds through one pair of underwear per period. One pair of underwear is about $5 at Target.

1 $5 pair of underwear per period x 456 periods = $2,280

Chocolate or sugary treats for cravings during PMS
This one may not affect everyone, but for this round up, we'll say that a woman buys one chocolate bar (or another kind of food she is craving) around the time of her period.

1 bar of chocolate per period x 456 periods x $2 per bar = $912

Acne medication for breakouts
Acne medication lasts for quite some time, so this Neutrogena spot cream, which costs $7.49 at Walgreens, would last an average of three years if only used during that time of the month.

38 years of periods divided by 3 years = 12.6 x $7.49 per tube = $94.87

Birth control
Studies show that about 80 percent of women use oral contraception at some point in their lives. This monthly purchase adds up if it isn't covered by health insurance -- and 33 percent of women who are covered still pay some money out-of-pocket. Pills from Planned Parenthood cost anywhere from nothing to $50 per month, so for our graph, we set an average of $25.

$25 per month x 456 periods = $11,400

Heating pads
A heating pad costs about $20. We're assuming a woman would use an average of two in her lifetime.

2 heating pads x $20 = $40
