Kelly Ripa has pink hair! We repeat, Kelly Ripa has pink hair!

The 44-year-old "Live with Kelly and Michael" co-host debuted her new look on Instagram on Tuesday, when she posted a bunch of similarly hued emojis and gave stylist Ryan Trygstad a shout out for transforming her locks. " for the love of P!NK @ryantrygstadhair you are boss!" Ripa captioned the Instagram snap.

“They call me pinkie galore,” Ripa told the audience and viewers of her show on Wednesday, as it was the first time she was taking her newly colored hair on national television.

“Every time I go on vacation I dye my hair a different color,” she explained. “It usually washes out and this will wash out. It’s part of my tradition -- I like to have fun for a few weeks. I literally sat there with pink hair dye, multiple shades of pink on my hair for hours. I get very bored. I’ve had the same color for six months at least, and that’s a long time for me.”

Ripa joins Kaley Cuoco, Julianne Hough, Hilary Duff and even Madonna to recently embrace pink hair.

Medium-Length Hairstyles You'll Want To Wear Now

One of the advantages of having medium-length hair is that it is the perfect length for switching between long, flowy locks and easy updos. Hollywood stars like Emily Blunt, Chrissy Teigen and Emmy Rossum have chosen shoulder-sweeping layers over super-long hair extensions, giving them all a fresher, more youthful look.

Those of us who don't have personal glam squads on speed dial sometimes hit a wall when thinking of different ways to sport medium-length hairstyles that don't involve a hair tie.

If you've been wearing the same hairdo for weeks or even months, check out the photos below for inspiration.

What The Heck Is Paraffin Wax, And Why Is It In Beauty Products?

"Beauty Glossary" is a HuffPost series that breaks down beauty product ingredients so you know exactly what you're putting onto and into your body.

paraffin wax

You may have seen women dipping their hands or feet into an opaque white or pink substance at the nail salon and wondered what the heck that was about. The liquid is actually paraffin wax, which is commonly used in beauty products to soften and smooth skin.

Paraffin comes in many forms and is a type of mineral oil often found in face creams and body lotions. Paraffin is used in beauty products because it is a less expensive way to make skin feel moisturized.

According to board-certified dermatologist Michael Shapiro, paraffin wax has a long history of also treating many different physical conditions such as increasing blood flow, arthritis, improving joint stiffness and reducing pain when heated and applied/rubbed onto the skin/joint area.

"It has a low melting point, which means that it melts into a liquid at a temperature that is not too hot to immerse onto the skin," says Shapiro. Hence the relaxed feeling you get during a paraffin wax treatment when your hands or feet are engulfed in the warm substance.

Although the ingredient makes your skin feel softened and relieved from minor aches, Shapiro says that's about all it does. "It is not actually properly hydrating and repairing skin," he says.

The dermatologist adds that paraffin is known to clog pores and can also be harmful if swallowed because of the fact that it does not break down easily. "In skincare, paraffin is commonly used in its oil form and again, it is a derivative of petroleum," says Shapiro. "It is very smooth and slippery, which is why it's oftentimes put in lotions and creams so that it can smear and rub into skin easily. [But] paraffin is overall not good for the skin."

Ali Wentworth Hated Kendall Jenner -- Until She Actually Met Her

When it comes to the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Ali Wentworth admits to having blindly adopted the opinion that "they're destroying Western Civilization."

But her stance has since changed, she told HuffPost Live in a Tuesday conversation about her new book Happily Ali After.

"We live in a hate society," Wentworth explained. "We automatically hate people because, 'Oh, we're supposed to hate this person' -- I could list a whole bunch of people in pop culture who you go like, 'Oh, I know, she's a train wreck. She's a hot mess,' and then you don't even know them."

It was a chance meeting with the youngest Jenners and their matriarch that showed Wentworth just how wrong her preconceived notion was.

"They came up to our table -- of course I thought they were coming up to George [Stephanopoulos, her husband], because people come up to him -- and she came up to me and she was like 'Hi, I'm Kris Jenner -- I'm just such a fan,'" the comedienne recounted. "And then Kendall and Kylie wished my daughter happy birthday, and of course she almost went into cardiac arrest, because, you know. And they were just so warm and so nice.'"

Britney Spears has a fresh new 'do for summer, y'all.

The pop singer debuted her new haircut, a lob with bangs, on Instagram Tuesday in a selfie for her fans. The short style is perfect for the season's warmer months.

She got a bob back in September, but added inches of extensions to her blond tresses not long after. In March, she had a style snafu when a piece of her weave fell out during one of her "Piece of Me" shows at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Carolina Herrera Explains Why It's Not Fashionable For Stars To Wear 'Naked' Dresses

We have a feeling the "Beygency" might be coming after Carolina Herrera for this one.

The designer, ever the epitome of the classic style she sends down the runway, is seldom seen wearing anything other than a crisp button down and tailored black trousers or a skirt. In a new interview with The Washington Post, Herrera explained her distaste of the "naked trend," which involves strategic placement and little else.

“It’s so modern to be naked or almost naked," she said, pointing to photos of Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian at the 2015 Met Gala. "They think it’s going to attract younger people if they do those dresses. No! The almost naked! Oh God! They’re trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery."

"They’re supposed to be fashion icons and they’re not wearing anything," she added.

Clearly, for an iconic fashion designer whose clients have included first lady Michelle Obama and Jackie O., showing up basically nude does not an icon make.

Looks like Rihanna won't be invited to sit in Ms. Herrera's front row any time soon.

HuffPost What's Working Honor Roll: Women In China Are Photographing Their Armpit Hair To Redefine Feminine Beauty

The Guardian: Chinese feminists hold armpit hair photo contest

A new online campaign in China is grabbing worldwide attention for its powerful effort to combat female beauty stereotypes.

The campaign -- which invites women to post pictures of their armpit hair online -- launched weeks after several female activists were arrested for attempting to organize a protest against sexual harassment in China. The contest's organizer, Xiao Meili, hopes to reframe the conversation around feminine beauty.

On a larger scale, the contest -- and yes, there are prizes -- is challenging the rising government censorship in China and attempts to stifle human rights groups and other NGOs.

“I hope to raise the issue of the ownership of female body and to dispel the belief that it is wrong for girls to keep their armpit hair," Meili told The Guardian. “The greater message here is about discussing the ownership of female body and challenging the stereotyping of femininity."

Our Emotional Ties to Our Strands of Hair

$
0

Your hair is one of the first things people see when they look at you and one of the first things you notice when you look at yourself in the mirror. Like it or not our choice in hair style and color plays a significant role in how people perceive us and in many cases how we feel about ourselves.

The emotions that we tie to our hair strands are quite interesting. Some emotions are quite strong and sometimes are triggered immediately when our hair is not how we expected it to be or how others expected it to be. For example, have you ever had what you perceived to be a bad hair day and your mood is 'off' as a result?

I have seen emotional ties to our hair go backwards to beauty in that I have met people who do not want to wear or just are not ready to wear their optimal hair style or color(s). They turn down choices that will make their eyes sparkle and their overall appearance more balanced, stylish, vibrant, refined and even younger in favor of looking dull, unprofessional, outdated, odd and even older.

What emotions are stirred up inside of you when you change your hair style or color and/or when you think about changing your hair style or color? Are some of them negative and perhaps undesirable to face and therefore you continue to make appearance choices that do not give off your best? I hope below triggers some thoughts that may help answer this question for you...

Sometimes it's scary to...

  • Face uncertainty

  • Stop hiding behind our hair

  • Face change by letting go of something that we have held on to for decades

  • Be authentic

  • Ignore untrained opinions from our loved ones - friends, family and other peers

  • Let go of fear

  • Be love

  • Be confident

  • Trust ourselves and our own internal guidance system (our gut)

  • Not seek out external validation

  • Face that we are getting older and face seeing our age through our grey hair (Related article: You've Got Grey Hair, Therefore You Need to Be a Blonde???)

In the past I have had a hair color client whose color analysis results indicated her current blonde hair color was not aligned with her optimal hair color palette (she had been wearing her blonde hair color for approximately 20 years). When I transitioned her hair color to be in her optimal hair color palette, she looked so vibrant and amazing. However, she was in shock, full of doubt and perhaps just not ready to feel some emotions that came with her hair color change. The emotional roller coaster surrounding her new hair color lasted for days and was so unpleasant for her to face, she ultimately decided to ignore multiple expert opinions and return to the lighter hair color that did not give off her best.

Another hair color client was transitioned to be in her optimal hair color palette and before her hair was even fully dry, started crying out of joy. She had been going through a bit of a life transition at the time and her new hair color was the ultimate release to getting her authentic core self and confidence back.

Above are just a couple of examples of emotional journeys surrounding hair transformations that I have witnessed.

Common reactions of someone finding out and seeing that their current hair color is not giving off their best during a color analysis consultation include -
  • "But...I've been dying my hair this color for as long as I can remember"

  • "Maybe in the Fall I will consider changing my hair color"

  • "Oh but my greys will show" (mostly said by blondes, see above related article link)

  • "I'm going to have to think about it"

What is there to think about? Why do you want to delay giving off your best? If you are one of these people reacting this way, you may want to click here to link to before & after photos of a couple of individuals transitioning to their optimal hair colors for reference as you think through your responses to these questions.

One of my biggest personal life lessons that I have learned through experience is that we attract what we believe about ourselves. If we are aware and tuned into what we are attracting (even what we perceive as minor experiences), we have the power to release any negative beliefs or emotions that are out of alignment with our highest good.

My wish is that every time you enter the hair salon, you are ready to embrace any and all emotions that are stirred up by wearing what experts indicate is your most optimal hair style and color so that you give off your best and most authentic energy.

I hope this blog post inspires you to wear your authenticity!

American Apparel Says New Ads Will Be Less Sexy And More 'Socially Conscious'

It's out with the old, and in with the less sexualized for American Apparel, and there's a 39-page report to prove it.

In a new document titled "Chaotic to Iconic," the brand laid out its goals for the future, including obtaining $1 billion in revenue targeting millennials and recasting the brand "in a positive, inclusive, socially conscious light." It hopes to achieve this by casting what, according to the document they consider to be "confident and naturally beautiful" models between 16-60 who are "racially universal" and natural looking. And according to the accompanying images, are sitting in a more ladylike fashion.

ads

The report is a long time coming for a company that has repeatedly gotten into trouble for its suggestive ads. Not to mention, former CEO Dov Charney -- who was fired in December 2014 -- is no stranger to sexual harassment accusations.

Of course, pushing out less provocative ads doesn't mean the brand is losing its edge. In an interview with Bloomberg, Chief Executive Paula Schneider explained that "there’s a way to tell our story where it’s not offensive. It is an edgy brand. And it will continue to be an edgy brand."

ads

With an even bigger focus on millennials, who the document calls "the key influencers in fashion and current events," it's nice to see that the ads targeting them will be a bit more ... appropriate. Let's just hope its casting calls follow suit, too. And who knows, perhaps there are more hasidic models in our future.

Bikini Fit Hacks: 3 Things You Must Do as Soon You Put on Your Swimsuit

2015-06-09-1433884111-5945457-Belussobikiniswimstringbikiniw724.jpg
A Belusso bikini, courtesy of brand

According to bathing suit expert Kirsten Sarkisian, you never put on a bikini top only once. "First, you put it on--simply put it on your body," the founder of Belusso swimwear tells Glamour, "but do not assume it's ready to go at this point."

Here's why a perfect-fitting suit can require a little bit of adjusting--and three easy steps to making sure everything is shimmied into place.

Per Sarkisian, getting the perfect fit can be broken down into three quick steps.

1. Right away, handle the straps, making them tighter or looser so that they feel secure but aren't digging into your skin.

2. Then, manually arrange your breasts by picking them up and pulling them gently toward the center of your torso--they should be fully enclosed by the structure of the bikini top.

3. Finish by checking yourself in a mirror to see if the top is riding up too high in the back or on the sides and make slight coordinating adjustments to the straps.

If you find you're rarely pleased with how your curves look in a bikini, there could be a sneaky suspect to blame.

"Padding can sag when it gets wet and takes longer to dry than the rest of the suit," Sarkisian said. "A suit with a little bit of it can be a good call for women with smaller breasts, but beware. Look for suits with removable pads so you can pull it out if need be."

Can We Ever Break Our Collective Grip on Fast Fashion?

By Véronique Hyland

The global juggernaut that is fast fashion is a fairly recent phenomenon, but if you ask Andrew Morgan, the director of The True Cost, a new film about the garment industry, it's not entirely to blame for the environmental and labor ravages. "It's accelerating; it's pushing the pedal way, way, down on an already-problematic system," he said at a panel about the film on Thursday. "I don't want to put all the blame on the back of fast fashion, because it did not invent a very irresponsible way of manufacturing. It did not invent over-marketing the consumption of things to people. That already existed. It just came in and took it as far as it could possibly go."

With today's verdict in the Rana Plaza case, which charged the factory owners with murder, the issue is more timely than ever. The documentary, produced by Livia Firth and which counts Harvey Weinstein and Zosia Mamet as admirers, looks the severity of the fashion system's social and environmental impact in the face. It was screened last week before a panel moderated by fashion consultant Julie Gilhart, consisting of designer Eileen Fisher, Linda Greer of the NRDC, and Safia Minney, the CEO of ethical label People Tree.

Despite the director's disclaimer, it's hard to come away from the film not feeling that global fast fashion doesn't bear a good part of the burden for contemporary environmental and labor problems. Morgan contrasts images of modern consumerism, such as bubbly YouTube haul videos and Black Friday melees, with the human toll of those same products -- from Cambodian garment-worker protesters to environmental activists in India to a Texan organic-cotton farmer who believes commercial farming contributed to her husband's cancer.

Polluted bodies of water and landfills stuffed with cast-off clothes that release harmful gases are just some of the byproducts of the global appetite for new clothes. The NRDC's Linda Greer pointed out during the panel that the environmental and labor issues are equally worthy of our attention. "It's not just simply the long labor hours and the terrible ways [garment workers] have to live," she said, "but it's the air they're breathing, the water they're drinking every day."

Morgan was inspired to make the film after reading about the Rana Plaza tragedy in the newspaper and realizing he, a socially conscious person, didn't know where his clothes came from, or who made them. Throughout his investigations, he wasn't able to get anyone from a fast-fashion brand to speak to him, though Stella McCartney does appear in the film to talk about her ethical convictions and how she incorporates them into her (much higher-end) segment of the industry. "I think it's a business model built on the assumption that a lot of us won't care and ask questions," Morgan told me after the panel. "And I think it's [considered] dangerous to open up that conversation." It's certainly a story that a lot of corporations -- with quarterly goals to meet and shareholders to answer to -- would prefer wasn't told.

In the film's least compelling thread, a professor of psychology and a professor of media studies broke down, in Psych 101 terms, the reasons why people consume: to feel loved, to attain status, to pursue a fleeting and ultimately empty vision of joy. This may have been true in the Mad Men era, but this Freudian-adjacent reasoning struck me as dangerously simplistic. The film depicted the haul girls and the Black Friday locusts, but it didn't talk to them or give them a chance to explain why they consume. People buy cheap clothes for a number of reasons, and the film never delved further into their motivations for doing so, which seemed like a crucial missed opportunity.

Do they think there is a way to change this ingrained consumer behavior? I asked the group. Gilhart felt that instead of expecting consumers to change their behaviors, the best way to improve conditions is to start with the companies. "We have to give them opportunities and ways to make them feel comfortable doing it," she said. "Either [that] or force them into doing it because if they don't do it they'll be left behind. And no one in fashion likes to be last."

Well, if you're Taylor Swift, that could be a possibility. In fact, E! News reports that the 24-year-old Oscar-winner was spotted out apartment hunting in New York's Tribeca neighborhood on Wednesday. (Swift owns a $20 million apartment in the area.) The "Hunger Games" star looked summer-ready in a pair of tiny denim shorts, a casual grey top and black heels.

Lawrence's apartment hunting comes just a day after the first official trailer for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2," -- the final film in the franchise based on the YA novels -- was released.

Kendall Jenner is putting plenty of mileage on that Estée Lauder contract.

In this latest ad, Jenner is helping to launch Estée Lauder's new perfume, Modern Muse Le Rouge. She looks stunning in a siren-red power suit with nothing underneath, which perfectly plays off the fragrance's crimson-themed name and strong tagline: "Be daring. Be an inspiration."
