Gap Is Shutting Down 175 Stores

NEW YORK (AP) — Gap plans to close 175 of its namesake stores in North America, or 18 percent of its current total, and cut 250 jobs at its headquarters as the company tries to strengthen the struggling brand.

Gap Inc., which owns Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, said Monday it will close about 140 Gap stores in North America in the fiscal year that ends Jan. 31 — and the remainder afterward — based on factors that include location and performance. The San Francisco company also is closing an undisclosed number of stores in Europe. And it's cutting jobs at its headquarters in an attempt to make it faster and more decisive.

The moves are the latest attempt by the once high-flying company to improve the shaky performance at its namesake brand. The brand that used to be a go-to for generations of khaki pants wearers has suffered in more recent years as it's failed to keep up with the right design trends.

To help right the ship, Gap has shaken up its management ranks: Art Peck became CEO in February and leadership of the Gap and Banana Republic brands was changed. The company also has been working to overhaul its fashions to improve their appeal. And it got rid of its Piperlime line.

The latest moves are aimed at making the company more nimble. Gap said the job cuts at its headquarters, in particular, are intended to make it faster and more decisive. In total, Gap said store closings and job cuts will save it around $25 million a year. The company said it will take about $140 million to $160 million in charges related to the moves.

The stores that will close, which won't include Gap Factory or Gap Outlet locations, have about $300 million in annual sales out of Gap's total of more than $16 billion. The company said it will continue opening stores and will have around 800 North American locations when the closings are complete. Gap had 963 stores in North America as of May 2.

The company declined to say how many people work in those stores. Gap said it will help displaced employees find positions at nearby locations.

Gap doesn't expect the moves to affect its other brands, most of which have been performing better than Gap stores. In fact, Gap Global President Jeff Kirwan told The Associated Press that the company will apply lessons it's learned from its Old Navy brand, which has been a bright spot, to Gap.

On Saturday, Sweden's Prince Carl Philip tied the knot with former reality TV star Sofia Hellqvist -- making her officially a modern-day princess!

Hellqvist donned a beautiful Ida Sjöstedt dress with lace sleeves and a tiara for the occasion (see a photo below). Many compared her look to the Sarah Burton gown Kate Middleton wore at her 2011 wedding to Prince William.

Sweden celebrated its own royal wedding when Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland, and Sofia Hellqvist said "I do" over the weekend. The celebration was nothing short of a fairytale.

Carl Philip and Hellqvist, a former bikini model and cast member on the Swedish edition of the reality show "Paradise Hotel," married Saturday at Stockholm's Royal Palace. According to Reuters, she wore a dress by Swedish designer Ida Sjöstedt that featured lace sleeves and an elaborate train.

The prince adorably struggled to put a wedding band on his new bride's finger. Later, he declared his love for her.

"Today I am the happiest man in the world," Carl Philip said in a speech after the ceremony. "Sofia, you fill my life with love and happiness. With your love I will be able to overcome all challenges. Dear Sofia, I love you."

The two began their romance in 2010 after meeting in the Swedish seaside resort town Bastad. People magazine reported the couple will honeymoon for 12 days and return for a racing event on June 25.

Mini-Facelift; Myth or Magic?

$

The pursuit of a youthful facial appearance may involve everything from moisturizers to facelift surgery, with fillers and Botox bridging the gap in between. A facelift is the biggest step and can be a daunting process. The journey includes local and/or general anesthesia, postoperative swelling and bruising, extended recovery time and hefty plastic surgeon fees. That is exactly the reason why wrinkle fighters like Botox and facial fillers enjoy such wide popularity. These remedies have revolutionized facial rejuvenation, but are only effective up to a point. Unfortunately, it is also why we are seeing too many people looking, shall we say, odd? Abuse and overuse of Botox and fillers is causing too many faces to look paralyzed, puffed up and generally abnormal.

Hence, an evolution of the traditional facelift to the Mini-Facelift or Short Scar Rhytidectomy. The standard facelift operation involves incisions extending from the scalp above the ear running in front, around and then behind the ear and back into the scalp. Facial skin on the cheeks and neck is dissected free and underlying muscle and fascia of the face and neck is dissected and tightened. Excess skin is trimmed and the incisions sutured closed. Drains are often needed.

While techniques vary somewhat, Mini-Facelift incisions are shorter, dissection of skin is less extensive and tightening of underlying muscle and fascia less also. The surgery can be done under local anesthesia, with or without sedation.

Shorter scars, quicker recovery and decreased complications are the draw, but the operation is not for everyone. The technique was designed for the younger patients just starting to show the signs of aging, with early jowl formation of the mid-face and sagging of the neck under the chin. The classic and frequent request heard by plastic surgeons from many women in their early fifties; "I just want a little lift right here" as they place each hand on opposite sides of the face, modestly lifting their cheek and neck skin upward. Belgian plastic surgeons Tonnard and Verpaele listened to their patient's desires and developed a Mini-Facelift, called the MACS Lift (minimal access cranial suspension lift). It has become the go-to short scar facelift for many plastic surgeons because of the simplicity of the technique, quality result and high patient satisfaction. The result is pleasing, but not dramatic.

The problem is certain practitioners and "corporation plastic surgery practices" proclaim their Mini-Facelift to be the best and get carried away with claims of spectacular cosmetic results requiring only one weekend for recovery and no bruising and no swelling! Lifestyle Lift,a nationwide cosmetic surgery chain, made similar claims. They ran into trouble over the years with state attorneys general offices who have questioned the company's advertising practices. In 2009, then-New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced that Lifestyle Lift had agreed to pay $300,000 in penalties to settle claims that its employees published fake, positive consumer reviews on the Internet. They filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

In the end, Mini-facelift surgery is an option, not a Panacea! It offers an alternative and a reasonable bridge for the younger middle aged individual who is battling Father Time when less invasive procedures like Botox and fillers can't keep up. Seek out a board certified plastic surgeon because it is still an operation and it does require recovery time, and like all surgery, the possibility of complications exist. However, in the properly selected patient, outcomes can be rewarding. This surgery offers less dramatic results, which is not such a bad thing in a younger patient desiring to look refreshed, not different!

Why Women Shave Their Legs

$

I want to talk about hair. In particular, I want to talk about leg hair. I want to talk about leg hair and women and how it was decided that the two went so poorly together.

The other day, I was at the beach and I noticed a young woman with hair in all of the places that made me shiver. Not just a little hair, but a lot. Enough that I noticed from a fair distance away. At first, I rubbed my eyes. When the image didn't change, my first reaction was judgement. "Why hasn't someone guided her? Has she ever shaved? Does she not know to?" The questions came in rapidly, as did the second-hand embarrassment.

Then, I stopped. Why was something as simple and natural as leg hair making me squeamish? I let myself be curious in a different way. "What if she was fully aware of all of society's beliefs about hair and women, and still chose to let herself stay au naturel?" I thought. Maybe it was I that was living in the dark.

The thoughts somewhat passed, but as the day went on they kept crawling back in, as did the vision of this woman's bikini line, legs, and armpits. When it came time to skype with a friend that night, I couldn't resist bouncing the information off of her.

I rattled off a brief description of the event, getting to the more pressing matter. "Why is shaving our legs right?"

She listened, knowing I never have just one question. "I mean, who decided that women should take a razor to their legs every day and remove the same hair that's entirely acceptable for men to keep?"

Of course, my friend didn't have an answer. Yet, as our feminist qualities took the reigns of our conversation and we began to hype each other up with our interest and slight outrage, I started to feel fooled. I couldn't believe I had never questioned it before. I had had the frequently asked questions of why men were allowed to roam free without the burden of keeping their bodies hairless, but it had never crossed my mind to ask why women still did.

Throughout the next few days, I spread the word like wildfire. I brought my list of reasons for the absurdity: women were far more covered than men to begin with, so it couldn't be for appearance, it couldn't be for practical reasons (to keep smell or dirt from lingering) since men didn't, etc. Everyone I talked to, I ran my thoughts by, mostly for the validation that the phenomenon was, indeed, ridiculous, but also to make sure my friend and I weren't the only ones who'd forgotten to question the beliefs laid out for us and the resulting judgment at those who strayed from the norm. I felt guilty at my initial reaction of the woman on the beach. That I had assumed she was living in ignorance made me sad. I realized I was far more trapped than she.

One person to whom I brought my thoughts urged me to find a real answer. If I wanted to know, maybe I could. I started to research. As I browsed the web, words popped out at me. "Disease," "barbaric," "trendy," "Betty Grable," "marketing," and a variety of other no longer known excuses bounced along my screen. It turned out that the shaved-legs-sensation had waxed and waned for different reasons, the most recent being, in large, due to a trend set by magazines and fashion icons. The desire to fit in -- the desire to be desired -- had swept up half the population, and left the remaining half with standards without a basis.

I was left with answers and a new set of questions. The reasons for why originally did not apply to the current why. We are keeping the standard out of mere familiarity. There's no longer purpose other than the fear of the judgement that no longer has purpose. Yet, as history has shown, culture is changeable, as are standards.

As a woman, I like the feeling of smooth legs. I've been shaving for over 10 years and I've always been fascinated by the idea, begging my mother to let me start shaving earlier than was necessary. However, in large, I'm certain this fascination and positive association was laid out by the preconceived notion that shaved legs were inevitable, feminine, and appealing. To a certain extent, I have pity for my child self, for the children of our era, and for the women of today. I even have pity for myself, because since this realization, I have still shaved my legs. I still like the feeling and I still know the judgement. I'm quite sure I won't be the one to radically petition and start a movement. But, I'd like to start a discussion. What if we decided not to follow the crowd? What if it became an option to never shave or only shave if we wanted to? What if we freed ourselves from the judgement of ourselves and others? What if it stopped being radical? What if there was no standard?

There doesn't have to be.

Summer Business Attire for Women: Basic Do's and Don'ts

$
0
0
It's time to focus on your summer office wardrobe as you rotate your closet and store away the heavy winter coat until next year. Though it may be tempting to relax your wardrobe when you see your office mates come into work wearing clothes that could pass for a Saturday pizza and movie date, you'll look and feel more professional with a few updates. I recently posted my thoughts on pulling together a fresh summer business look and have a few more tips to share.

Do build your wardrobe around some key color classics. Soft colors such gray, light blue, and champagne always look smart and sophisticated. Wear a neutral color on top and a brighter bottom, or go for tone-on-tone for a sophisticated office ready outfit.

Don't wear heavy hosiery. Put away your black tights. While they may be your signature look in winter, a heavy opaque leg covering is uncomfortable and too dark for the summer heat. If your office dress policy requires hosiery, do your homework and find a brand that is sheer and lightweight.

Do reach for a sheath dress. I love color and you can find a wide selection of professional dresses at your nearest department store. Look for options with a short sleeve. A little stretch will also help as you dash from one meeting to the next. A sleeveless dress is a good choice if your office allows your shoulders to show, but take into consideration the corporate dress code.

Don't make skinny jeans, leggings and yoga pants a part of your daily work routine. If you work in an office where jeans are the norm at least one day a week, add a cotton tee, a blazer and a nice pair of heels. You will be ready for a client meeting, a day at the office, and an after work happy hour. Take off the jacket and enjoy the breeze on the patio of your favorite bar or restaurant.

Do accessorize. A simple top and a great necklace, or a bold purse, an interesting scarf (worn around your neck, or the strap of your purse), a statement bracelet, or some small scale earrings will add attention grabbing detail. When you have one standout piece, minimize the rest of your jewelry. A bold lipstick can do wonders for your overall look...just go lighter on the rest of your makeup.

Don't opt for cargo pants. If your office encourages casual wear and khaki pants are the rule of thumb, steer clear from cargo detailing. Instead, look for crisp, clean lines in a quality fabric and an appropriate length. I am often asked about cropped pants in the workplace. While some companies have no policy on ankle length slacks, others are clear about their preference for a full length trouser. Another consideration is knowing how to wear a cropped pant with your body style. Some people can pull it off marvelously, while others tend to look frumpy. Experiment with different styles and various heel heights to find the look that works best on you. If you are wearing tennis shoes with your cropped pants, it's the wrong look altogether. Athletic shoes and flip flops are another don't.

Do try mixing patterns. If you work in a creative environment, a striped shirt with a floral skirt, or a pinstripe blue and ivory wide leg pant with a floral shirt can be both chic and eye appealing. A pencil skirt in a geometric pattern, with a polka dot cotton blouse, can create a great look when worn with confidence.

When it comes to building her wardrobe, Aï Bihr certainly has a lot of options. As Steven Alan's creative director, Bihr has a whole store's worth of goodies right at her fingertips -- and is in the enviable position of being able to actually create exactly the kind of garment she'd like to wear. And if that wasn't enough to make you wish you were in her shoes, Bihr speaks multiple languages, has lived in Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, holds degrees in both neuroscience and pattern-making. Here, she gives us the scoop on what she wears to work.

Test Market

On a work day, I try to wear mostly Steven Alan because it's good for me to wear what we've made; if we need to improve something or if something's not working great, then I know it. I love to wear a big Steven Alan shirt -- I usually get something a bit oversize. So I'll wear a men's extra-large reverse seam in white, with a pair of jeans we've made. I also have a lot of old Levi's because I collect a lot of denim. I love a 501, but I like to buy a big men's size and then cut the legs so they're kind of wide and cropped. I go to a lot of vintage stores to hunt for them; when I lived in Paris I went every weekend to look at the flea markets. I'm also a big vintage eyewear collector and have really loved designing the Steven Alan Optical collection.

On my feet, I usually have sneakers or oxfords. Or like, a penny loafer. My whole team knows I'm addicted to these Japanese high tops called Shoes Like Pottery. I wear them constantly, year round. I don't want to be boring, but I always look the same! Even if there's a corporate event or I have to make a presentation, I always look the same. I try to stay very consistent and have been very consistent for a long time. I've always worn a lot of jumpsuits--whatever brand I go to, I make jumpsuits for them. They're kind of great because they're so versatile. You can even tie the sleeves at the waist and they make really great pants that way. I have a nice collection of vintage jumpsuits, some from the Yves Saint Laurent Safari collection, and I'll wear those tied at the waist or zip them up and belt them. And if I'm wearing a jumpsuit like that I might add a little heeled sandal. Maryam Nassir Zadeh makes beautiful shoes. If I do go to a party and I feel like wearing something a little bit different I'll put on sandals from Maryam. One of my best friends, Mona, designs A Détacher and she makes really beautiful skirts and dresses. I recently bought an indigo skirt/culotte thing from her. It's the perfect length and so good for summer parties.

Dress for the Seasons

When the weather is this hot and humid, I love to wear linen and cotton poplin. We have these really great cotton poplin wide trousers from Steven Alan called the Picnic Pant. When you wear a wide-leg trouser like that, it's nice to wear something small on top. You can't wear something too big, or else you look like a tent. It's also a great pant to wear with a linen T-shirt.

In the fall, I'm usually in a suit. I'll wear a suit jacket and a pair of trousers, with a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a few different jacket styles that I really like--one is a schoolboy that's a bit smaller; The Row makes a really nice one every year. And then I like a boyfriend notched lapel in tropical wool; it's actually the first jacket I made for Steven Alan when I joined the company and it's still my go-to. I also always love to have a peak lapel double-breasted blazer. I think the key to pulling off a suit is--well, first of all you just really have to find the right suit for you. But then you also have to have a more casual element in your accessories or what you're wearing the suit with, like a T-shirt and sneakers.

Quality Control

When I'm shopping for myself, I always look at the finishing of the garment. I'm looking on the inside, not just the outside, examining the fabric, rubbing it on my neck and doing all the crazy things that designers do. You want to make sure there's a clean finish--basically, that you don't see all this thread wrapped around the seam--so that it doesn't look like things are going to snag. It's good to pay attention to these kinds of things, because they're going to dictate the longevity of the garment. And really touch the fabric. Customers aren't stupid, they know when they're feeling good fabric. This is why we choose to use really good fabric at Steven Alan, because our customers are smart. They know they're not getting garbage from us. That's one thing I'm really proud of: There's no room for poor quality. I'm really proud to say that more than 90 percent of the things I make are made in New York. And if it's not made here, it's made at the best factory in Japan.

Lifetime wants to show you what really happened behind the scenes of all your favorite shows.

Hot on the heels of Lifetime's "The Unauthorized 'Full House' Story" comes "The Unauthorized 'Beverly Hills, 90210' Story," according to The Hollywood Reporter

Anyone who watched the series, which aired for 10 seasons throughout the '90s, knows that just as much drama went down off-screen for many of the cast members as it did for their characters at the Peach Pit each week. Perhaps this could finally be a story in Lifetime's "Unauthorized" series that may actually be worth being told.

According to Lifetime, the made-for-TV movie will specifically focus on the show's first four seasons, "highlighting the drama between cast members and producers both on- and off-set, including the series' journey from several near-cancellations to its massive success and imprint in the cultural zeitgeist and lasting impression it has made on millions of people to this day."

Again, we hope it's just as campy and gloriously unwatchable as last year's "Unauthorized 'Saved by the Bell' Story."

No Worries, Right? Tips for Taking Care of Summer Hair

Summer is in full swing and it's very important that you keep your locks healthy.

Sun and heat can dry out your hair in no time, leaving it brittle, frizzy and damaged. Here are some tips to help your hair stay beautiful:

• Since you already are in the sun a LOT, try to avoid anything else that involves heat on your hair, including your beloved blow dryer, flat irons, hot rollers, curling irons ... At least, try to reduce their use to a minimum during the summer months.

• Headed outside? This is the time to let your hair air-dry as much as possible. Scrunch with gel or hair mousse for some fast volume and waves, then head for the beach or trails.

• For those who get frizzy hair, try shampooing and styling every other day if not every third day. On that second or third day, go with a braid, a ponytail or cute hat or headbands.

• Do not over-process your hair with chemicals. Keep in mind that even if we highlight or color, the sun will continue to lighten it further.

• Take it with you. Travel with a good professional conditioner and once a week go for a deep conditioning to keep your hair moisturized. Don't forget your travel-size containers! What could be worse than watching an airport security guard drop your high-end conditioner into the trash.

• Think about accessories. Hats, bandanas, headbands, clips all work well for styles in the sun.

Part of what we do in the summer is loosen up, right? We take it easy. We're on vacation. And that's what we do with our hair, too ... we go easy. That makes it easier to handle in all the fun and sun, because we're not trying to be quite so controlling, and it gives it a different, relaxed, even romantic look. There are times that we work hard to create those styles. Now we're getting it for real. Headed out on the lake for wakeboarding? Clip it back and let the wind and water style your hair! "No worries!"

Granted, it's hard to boast about helmet hair after a day of mountain biking but if you're attitude is right, your hair will follow. Then pull it into a ponytail or spike it up with a pocket tube of hair mousse and you're ready for that pint after a long day on the trails.

Looking forward, the healthier you keep your hair in the summer, the better it will look when you make those transitions to the luscious fall colors.

Be open to change!

Your Hair Dreams Can Come True, Courtesy of Olaplex

Since crossing over into the dark side of puberty, one of the first moves I have consistently made each time I experienced a breakup or similar life-altering event was to change the appearance of my hair, oftentimes drastically. It was almost as though the act of changing it was a rite of passage into my new phase of life. I find, as women, the appearance of our hair is an emotional part of our lives.

Hair Is A Big Deal

My hair has always been one of my most beloved and expressive creative outlets, though the motivation to experiment with it is not exclusively driven by vanity and superficial indulgences alone. As women, the appearance of our hair is often a direct reflection of our emotional state. You can gain a great deal of insight about a female and what is going on in her life by observing the state and appearance of her hair. Recently I complimented a girl on her purple and lavender ombre hair, telling her it reminded me of "grape jelly with a swirl of cream". She told me she dyed her hair to match her aura. It made me smile, for I understood entirely.

When a woman finds an attentive stylist who is capable of bringing her most ambitious hair visions to life, it is almost as big of a deal as finding her soul mate. Most women are capable of being transformed from looking as though they haven't showered in days to a top model, from a soccer mom to a trophy wife or 'basic' to bombshell after two hours in the right stylist's chair.

Once Upon A Hair Dream

As big of a deal as hair is, I'm rarely committed to a certain "look" for long. I often find myself gravitating back to the dark side after every change, however I always grow restless and bored yet again. As important of a role as hair color removers have in terms of allowing one to change their hair color often, they are only able to take you so far. I am always hunting for anything to further nurture and promote my lack of hair color commitment. Therefore, when I encountered the wonder of Olaplex, my heart nearly stopped for a moment.

When my stylist posted a "before and after" picture showcasing the transformative results from his first attempt at using the product, I immediately stood at attention and was nearly saluting. Within 24 hours, I had an appointment booked, along with a world of knowledge. I scoured the internet for an entire day in an attempt to absorb as much information about the service as I possibly could.

The Hair 'Mission Impossible' Made Possible?

As many of my faithful readers on The Daily Doll are already aware, I carefully research product and methods prior to recommending them. I am not interested in simply discussing another person's experience with a product, discussing reviews I've read about a product or solely documenting my experiences alone. I enjoy being the investigator, the guinea pig and the reporter synergistically.

While conducting research online, I read the following claims:

"Olaplex multiplies and perfects the bonds of the hair..."
"Stylists, tell your clients that gone are the days of worrying about hair breakage!"
"Olaplex is a game-changer..."
"Add Olaplex to your bleaching mixture, and never break hair again!"

What if there are no longer limitations to what can be done to hair in one day, I thought. What if this product becomes the most magnificent enabler of my hair exploration addiction to date?

I was so excited, I was nearly sweating.

Upon arriving to an appointment with my stylist, I wasn't anticipating a miracle. I embarked on the venture with the understanding that Rome was not built in a day. I had no desire to go to the extremes of being blonde again, but knew I desired to be lighter. My hair was black at the time and although I love dark hair, I was bored yet again. The problem was, though, underneath those layers of black dye were also layers of bleach. Like I said, I'm not exactly the most loyal 'girlfriend' to my hair experiments. In terms of hair color, I've begun to wonder if I'm capable of monogamy at all.

Chase Taylor, my exceptional stylist, bleached 60 to 70 percent of my hair, with Olaplex incorporated into the bleach mixture. The end result was a soft, shiny mane of hair, approximately three levels lighter, with absolutely zero trace of any further breakage. I was elated. My feet were still planted firmly on the ground, yet my head was in hair Heaven.

So, With Olaplex, What Can You Expect?

It May Blow Your Mind, But First Manage Your 'Olaplexations'

In my unprofessional yet thoroughly informed, always skeptical and slightly neurotic opinion, below are six tips I suggest you keep in mind if you find yourself interested in an Olaplex service:

  1. Select a stylist who knows what he/she is doing. This is a phenomenal product, but must be in the right hands for optimal results.

  2. If your hair is already damaged/overprocessed and you wish to bleach, ask your stylist about treating your hair with Olaplex first. From what I have read on several stylist forums, adding Olaplex to a bleach mixture alone may not be sufficient.

  3. Don't be unrealistic. You can certainly push the limit and go lighter in a shorter time period than ever before, however your hair still has the potential to break.

  4. If you are bleaching, expect to be at the salon for a longer period of time than you have prior. Adding Olaplex to a bleach mixture will slow the processing time, however the peace of mind and results are worth it. Be patient.

  5. Understand that this product is still new, and stylists are continuing to experiment with it as well as find new methods for using it. This is presently the most "buzzed about" product among stylists, yet many stylists have not had the opportunity to try it!

  6. Your stylist will give you a product to take home with you and apply to your hair once per week. Use it. If your hair is damaged, apply two layers as directed. It works, and is a key component in the process of achieving optimal results.

Please Pass the Paranoia: On the Dangers of Being Overheard

$

When having a private conversation in a public place--even a crowded New York City restaurant--you can never be too circumspect.

One evening, after a particularly stressful audition, an actress friend of mine named Katie decided to stop into Café Loup in Greenwich Village, to unwind a bit over a martini and some country pâté. After ordering, Katie took out her New Yorker and began to read when suddenly, amidst the ambient sound of the dinner hour bustle, she thought she heard her full name uttered--and in an oddly conversational tone, not as an address. It had come from the table next to her.

She hadn't been paying attention to these nearby diners. "But when you hear your full name spoken--and as you know, my last name is not a common one--it really gets your attention no matter how engrossing Malcolm Gladwell may be," she told me. Thinking it was someone she knew who had spotted her and was trying to be funny by casually dropping her name, Katie looked up pointedly and expectantly at the group, preparing to smile in recognition. She made eye contact with the person facing her. It was a woman she'd never seen before. At the table were another woman and a man, neither of whom she recognized. Katie looked back down at her magazine, thinking, Maybe I just imagined that, maybe I've got post-audition auditory dysfunction. But she kept listening. While she could not make out every word over the noise of the restaurant, she could tell the man was regaling his two dinner companions with a story about a friend of his who had expressed interest in a woman after seeing her online dating profile.

"Apparently from her photo this Katie ____ (here he used my friend's full name again!) has really huge bazongas," she heard the man say. "But Pat says her description made her sound kind of overly ambitious."

Embarrassed, Katie didn't know what to do. Should she get up and leave? Confront them and ask them to stop discussing her? In the end she stayed and finished her martini as quickly as possible, feeling confused and uncomfortable. She had no idea what photo the man could possibly be referring to--since the only pictures of herself she could remember posting were from the shoulders up--but she resolved to stay away from any suitor named Pat. To Katie's immense relief, the diners soon went on to other topics. But her much longed-for relaxing interlude was ruined.

We think because we live in a big city that the odds are slim to none that anyone we might be talking about will be within earshot. While people in a small town assume everyone knows everyone, and behave with corresponding discretion, we city-dwellers have this illusion of anonymity. We talk about the most personal things on a packed subway train, in the midst of crowded stores, buses, theaters, and restaurants. We offer up our intimate thoughts and feelings, and gossip about other people, completely ignoring the strangers present. Funnily enough, the more people there are, the more privacy we convince ourselves we have--when, mathematically speaking, a crowd actually increases the odds of someone knowing the person we are talking about. While it's true that a high level of crowd noise can create some privacy, it can also serve to make us more careless; invariably the din subsides at the very moment we are talking loudly about the illicit affair a colleague is having with her next door neighbor.

Also, in New York City, the connectivity of people exists with about three degrees of separation rather than six. People in the same fields tend to go to the same restaurants, parks and often even travel on the same subway lines.

It is for this reason that one editor I know uses code names for all the professional people in his life whenever he tells me about them over drinks. Super-paranoid about being overheard talking about people in his industry (he has a high-profile position in book publishing) he'll refer to his boss as "Red Balloon," his departmental nemesis as "Evil Kitty" and the head of the company as "Elephant." If anyone was actually listening to us during one of these discussions, it would sound more like a children's book plot than work gossip.

Just recently I was at Gennaro's restaurant on Amsterdam, talking to my friend Lisa about a mutual friend named Bob who was having a marital problem. It was 8:00pm and the restaurant was crowded. I leaned forward so as to speak directly into Lisa's ear, but not before craning my head around to the right and to the left to check out who might be at the tables beside and behind us. (Especially to see whether there were any singles. People sitting alone at a restaurant are always listening to conversations around them; they can't help it.) Lisa started laughing at me and shaking her head.

"Jesus, who do you think you are, Deep Throat? You think out of millions of people, Bob or one of his friends is going to be sitting at the table next to you?"

I refused to be embarrassed. "You just never know," I said.

And the thing is, you never do.

Of course, my mother would say the answer is to never gossip about anyone, ever. She is fond of quoting the old adage: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

My advice? If you don't have anything nice to say, say it in a whisper.

Armani Gives Kim Kardashian Foundation With A Side Of Shade

Celebrities: they're just like us.

When Kim Kardashian found out that Giorgio Armani was apparently discontinuing her favorite foundation over the weekend, she took to Twitter to express her disappointment.

Unfortunately, she made a little spelling error. Instead of spelling his name the correct way, "Giorgio," Kim typed "Georgio." Armani's team then replied with all the shade they could manage in 140 characters.

It doesn't look like Kim has replied to Armani's tweet yet, but we're guessing this is the current mood in the Kardashian-West house:

Two days to discover not-to-be-missed places in the most beautiful city in the world, with local guests and an unexpected iconic bag (can you recognize it?)*

Are You Sure You Know Rome?

2015-06-16-1434486551-4778780-Rome1.jpg

Lorcan O’Neill
Via Orti d’Alibert, 1 (Trastevere)
The gallery of Irish gallerist Lorcan O’Neill is hidden in a small street in Trastevere. Important artists of the international contemporary scene are hosted here, including Francesco Clemente, Tracy Emin and Anselm Kiefer. Laurita Parrilla (in the picture with a Fendi Baguette), who manages the gallery, received us just before the opening of the solo exhibition of the Canadian photographer Jeff Wall. The opening of every show is celebrated with a toast in the soccer field of the senior center just across the way.

In The Old Mill

Lanificio Cucina
Via di Pietralata 159/a
Tel 064501384 (Pietralata)
Until a short time ago the Lanificio wool mill of Pietralata was just an enormous, disused and falling down warehouse overlooking the Aniene in a district far from the center of the city. And then it became a culture and entertainment center, with dancing classes, vintage markets, and, most importantly, the Lanificio Cucina restaurant. Here it is possible to sit at a table in front of the large windows in front of the river, drink a glass of organic wine and eat refined organic dishes. It's always open.

An Evening In Trastevere

2015-06-16-1434486613-6857242-Rome3.jpg

Trattoria da Teo
Piazza dei Ponziani 7 (Trastevere)
Sitting on the riverbank facing Tiberina Island lies one of the best restaurants in the city, tended to with passion by its chef, Teo, and his family. It serves plentiful portions of rigatoni amatriciana, artichokes Roman or Jewish-style and fine dishes of fish, such as prawn tempura or tomatoes stuffed with seared prawns, pachino tomatoes and basil. In times of economic crisis the latest craze with younger people is to have a pre-bill made, to see if they can allow themselves to eat more.

The Mod Hair Salon

Via Urbana 52 (Monti district)

Behind the historical façades of Roman residential buildings hide breath-taking apartments. If you are staying a few days, you can rent a house in Rome going through the “Wonder where to Stay” agency.

In the district of Rome which is becoming the night life centre of the city even the hairdressers adapt. This is the case of Mod Hair Salon, which has the atmosphere of a barber from days gone by, but which is much more sophisticated, with vintage rock’n’roll décor. Open every day until 21.00, 22.00 on Wednesdays (you could find yourself sitting next to Riccardo Scamarcio who has his hair cut by Emanuele Vona or his partner Oni).

To Take Away

2015-06-16-1434486707-5861606-Rome6.jpg

Mia Market
Via Panisperna 225 (Monti district)
A wall covered with pages from old-fashioned botanical and recipe books, with baskets of organic fruit and vegetables resting on them. A counter with jars of fresh pulse salads and then cold meats, cheese and bread. At Mia Market you can do the shopping and take it home, or sit down to eat, reading the newspaper in a homely environment.

FISH!

2015-06-16-1434486794-1210348-Rome7.jpg

Fish Market
Via di Pietralata, 149b (Pietralata)
A successful experiment for this fish restaurant-market with its amusing and cheap formula: “choose your fish, how you’d like it cooked, take it to the table and eat.” The fish market is to be found in the converted industrial area of the Lanificio mill. Only open evenings. Bookings taken at 3470095009.

The Dreaming Atelier

2015-06-16-1434486771-7878738-Rome8.jpg

Livia Risi
Via dei Vascellari, 37 (Trastevere)
The atelier of the designer Livia Risi, granddaughter of the film director Dino, is a reflection of her world. Once through the door, you find yourself in a room of toys or dreams, which take their shape in the clothes designed by Livia, in the accessories and in the photos and drawings hanging on the walls.

Gossip At The Cemetery

2015-06-16-1434486816-4411457-Rome9.jpg

Protestant Cemetery
Via Caio Cestio 6 (Testaccio)
A large garden in the shade of the Cestia pyramid, with the tombs of poets, artists and travelers. In Protestant style: no macabre details, but English lawn, sculptures, maritime pines, field flowers and cats wandering around. Look for the gravestone with the inscription Novità? Where a curious intellectual rests, and whose friends, still today, go to tell him what the gossip of the moment is. In the Cemetery’s bookshop, you can find Alessandro Rubinetti’s romanticized guide book (publisher Iacobelli) to be read while sitting on the bench in front of John Keats’ grave.

Around The Ghetto

2015-06-16-1434486840-190758-Rome10.jpg

Kosher Bistrot
Via Santa Maria del Pianto 68-69 (Ghetto)
The first place of its kind to open on Piazza Costaguti, renovated by the architect and designern Marco Valenti in the style of the 30s revisited. Tables on the square to sit at and taste hot or cold dishes, kosher (like everything else) wine and mint tea with almonds at any time of day.

Aperitif Time

2015-06-16-1434486863-4474133-Rome11.jpg

Il Baretto
Via Garibaldi 24 (Gianicolo-Trastevere)
An old bar in a unique position between the Gianicolo and the Trastevere, Il Baretto was renovated by Allegra Marinucci and her husband Richard Ercolani with vintage decor, in stark contrast to the steel window frames and the large windows on the terrace. It opens at 5 p.m. Expect aperitifs and a DJ set.
