These Stylish Siblings Prove That Everything Is Better In Twos

Meet Emmerson (age 5) and Hudson (age 3), aka the two most stylish siblings we know.

The California kids not only have some of the best outfits on the West Coast, but they also have an Instagram account that shows them off. The feed (run by their mother, Nikki Nielsen) shows Emmerson in pretty headbands and flowy dresses and Hudson in wide-rim glasses and harem pants.

But when it comes to getting these tots dressed every morning, it's not all seashells and balloons. "Hudson is super easy going when it comes to his clothes, he typically lets me put whatever I want on him but has to have a say in what shoes he wears," Nielsen told The Huffington Post, "[but] Emmerson is not as easy to please. She almost always has a problem with the outfits I put together and has to put in her two cents."

Check out a few of our favorite snaps of the stylish siblings below and tell us you're not just a tiny bit envious of their fashionable ways.

How Handbags Have Marked My Life Stages

0
0
Lately, I have been carrying a small cross-body bag inside my cavernous tote bag. "Why two purses?" my stalwart husband asked when he caught me doubling up. "You're not becoming a bag lady on me, are you?"

No, I'm not becoming a bag lady. But I am transitioning. My life stages have always been marked by what I carry on my arm and as I inch closer to retirement, this is still proving to be the case. Right now, I am on the cusp of my oldest child leaving for college, my youngest one is just months away from driving, and my husband spends most of his free time studying those "best places to retire" lists.

My handbag selection perfectly reflects where I am in life: Confused, trying on a few new hats while being reluctant to let go of the past which is still technically the present. Make sense?

Let me explain: As a 1960s hippie, I sported a long woven bag made by a tribesman from the mountains of Nepal. Who am I kidding? It was probably mass-produced in China like everything else in America at the time, but it still served my desire to let the world know I wanted to change it. I flirted with similar bags in designs from Central America, from Africa, from any Third World place on the planet. I wanted to end poverty, embrace equal rights for women and minorities, and make marijuana legal. It's been 50 years and I still want those things. But I remember that bag with great fondness. It lacked pockets, organizers or even a top closure. And when the knit strap broke from the weight of my possessions -- which it did with great regularity -- everything would scatter on my First World sidewalk and I'd have to get down on my hands and knees to shovel it all back into the satchel. The most memorable -- and ultimate -- bag malfunction came in one of the narrow alleyways in the Old City of Jerusalem. I left it there, which felt appropriate as a final resting place for my bag of lofty dreams and eternal optimism.

When I began my career as a journalist in the 1970s, I switched from a fragile hippie bag into something that allowed me to carry all the tools of my trade -- notebooks, pens, a camera, city council agendas, a rolodex and tons of coins in case I needed to stop at a pay phone to call a source. I also carried a pair of sneakers because my old crusty editor told me how reporters needed to traipse through mudslides, landfills, dicey 'hoods, and be able to chase after politicians who tried to evade their questions by darting out a statehouse window. Yes, that last really happened; this was New Jersey after all.

Being promoted into a management job meant more time in the office and less time in the muddy swamps, and my handbags adjusted accordingly. I carried a dainty little thing, just large enough to carry a tube of lipstick that I was wearing for the first time in my life. I now sported a real hair style, so a tiny comb went in it as well, along with a collapsible toothbrush because it turns out that my mother was right about brushing after every meal. With my new job and accompanying raise, I bought a house -- which meant I no longer had any wads of cash to take up space anyway. It was about this time that ATMs began to sprout on the landscape of my life. With one card in my tiny bag, I was good to go.

Becoming a wife meant that I became the family sherpa and gradually moved up the food chain of handbags until I reached the seriously large category -- the kind they sell in the luggage department. My bottomless pit of a bag was used to carry everything my husband and I needed, especially when we traveled: the thick travel guidebooks, extra eyeglass cases, car keys, house keys, sunscreen, rain ponchos, extra sweaters, and hardcover books to read on the plane.

And becoming a mom meant upsizing even more to a bag with room for snacks, sandwiches and water bottles. Throw in a stint as team mom and you would also be throwing in a spare set of shinguards for the player who inevitably forgot his and holding Joey's inhaler for him in case he needed it. For awhile, I toyed with the idea of a purse on wheels. Yes, my shoulders and back hurt that much.

Now, in the digital age, I carry my laptop and/or tablet with me wherever I go. My tote also has chargers for the devices, plus my big new smartphone. I still carry a reporter's notebook and pen just to jot something down, and yes, on most days there will be a change of footwear in there as well, plus a big scarf in case the air conditioning is turned up too high.

So, as my husband asked, what's up with the little cross-body bag within the greater tote? I'm trying it out, I told him. I sometimes leave the larger bag in the car and take just the smaller one with my wallet and car keys. I am testing out what it will feel like when no one needs me to hold their things or be the one prepared for every emergency and contingency. I'm getting used to the idea of not being able to produce a power bar or an orange on demand when someone is hungry. I am proving to myself that I really won't miss anything important if I don't compulsively check emails and texts on three devices at every red light. Or maybe what's really going on is that I'm just trying to use a new handbag. As Freud meant to say, sometimes a purse is just a purse.

This week, the Cut is talking advice -- the good, the bad, the weird, and the pieces of it you really wish you'd taken. Here, 25 smart women share their most valuable tidbits.

Greta Gerwig: "Don't drink all the drinks just because they're free!"

Julia Stiles: "Comparison is the thief of joy."

Mindy Kaling: "My mom always said, 'You should judge your relationship not by how a guy makes you feel when you're with him, but by how he makes you feel when you're not with him.'"

Kelly Ripa: "Somebody's negativity dumped on you is a bigger commentary on how they feel about themselves than you. Jessica Seinfeld taught me that."

Susan Sarandon: "You can always forgive yourself or apologize for things you do, but you can't ever work through things you wish you'd done and you didn't."

Judy Greer: "My mom told me not to shit where you eat, which a lot of people say, but when your mom says that to you as you're packing up your car to go away to college, it really sticks."

Rosie Perez: "My aunt used to say, 'Rosie, I'm so depressed, but tomorrow's another fuckin' day, eh?'"

Helen Mirren: "My headmistress told me not to be afraid of being afraid."

Jill Soloway: "Speak! It's a revolution for women to have voices."

Ali Wentworth: "Don't worry about working out until it's more about preventing death and less about what you look like."

Gayle King: "Maya Angelou said, 'When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.'"

Sandra Oh: "It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. I've got to tell you, that's serviced me so many times. It's big-picture thinking."

Liv Tyler: "Make eye contact, stop to really look someone in the eye. My grandmother taught me that."

Marilyn Minter: "Make envy your enemy."

Robin Roberts: "Don't play a supporting role in your own life."

Tavi Gevinson: "'Don't date anyone you wouldn't want to be,' from the writer Kate Bornstein."

Ava DuVernay: "Oprah told me that everything that happens to you is not happening to you, it's happening for you."

Dana Delany: "Trust your instincts -- but the caveat is you don't usually know what those are until you're much older."

Sandra Bernhard: "When I was starting off, my mentor Paul Mooney said, 'Bernhard, shed your skin.' In other words, get closer to who you really are as a performer. But I think it's good advice for people in life."

Veronica Roth: "My mom used to tell me, 'Other people are not thinking about you as much as you are.'"

Laverne Cox: "I think for trans folks, the struggle is, even as we want to transition and be better versions of ourselves, we have to love who we are today."

Rene Russo: "You have to maneuver in this world. You have to look at another person and go, 'What is it they need?' You can use that to ultimately get what you want."

Chita Rivera: "Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, with grace and humility. Be a sponge -- and absorb and learn."

Marin Ireland: "Fail better. Try again, fail again, fail better."

Aidy Bryant: "Just chill 'til you die, pretty much."

Caitlyn Jenner is living her life and giving the world front-row access as she tells her story on her upcoming docuseries "I Am Cait."

"Why did I decide to do a series? I am telling my story. People don't understand looking into the mirror and nothing seems right. Putting on clothes that you just really don't identify with. This is about getting to be who you really are," the 65-year-old said in a new promo for the series that was released on Friday.

Jenner assures viewers they'll be in for quite the ride, literally. "We're going to talk about everything. We're going to do a lot of fun things for the first time. We're going to go shopping for the first time. Maybe even some boy stuff, like ride a motorcycle -- because girls do that too."

She added, "It's going to be quite a journey. We're going to do some good."

12 'Waterproof' Watches You Can Definitely Get Wet In This Summer

Have you ever jumped into the pool and suddenly remembered you're still wearing your watch? After quickly removing it and drying it off, you realize how lucky you are when you look on the back and read the words "water resistant." But what does that really mean?

Contrary to popular belief, "water resistant" does not mean "waterproof." In fact, there aren't any watches that are 100 percent waterproof, because the Federal Trade Commission won't allow companies to use the term. Rather, most timekeepers are given an ATM (or atmosphere) rating that specifies how many meters or feet in which the watch can be submerged without being damaged. Here's a short rundown of ATM ratings and how they pertain to how you can use your watch:

3 ATM: 30 meters/100 feet = Everyday use (washing hands, rain, etc). No swimming.
5 ATM: 50 meters/165 feet = Short periods of showering/bathing and swimming. But no diving or snorkeling.
10 ATM: 100 meters/330 feet = Swimming and snorkeling is OK.
20 ATM: 200 meters/660 feet = High-impact water sports and recreational diving.
Diver: 250-300 meters/660-980 feet = Scuba diving. The closest you'll get to "waterproof."

You'll want to keep in mind that these ratings will diminish as your watch is used and exposed to water over and over again. Like any product, the structure will age, compromising its ability to withstand outside pressures.

We've rounded up a selection of women's and men's watches that have a rating of 5 ATM or higher. It's high time you have some summer fun without worrying about getting your watch wet.

Will You Be The Girl Who Is Single Forever?

0
0
Dating can be very frustrating. You spend time, money and emotional energy trying to find "The One" and most of the time you wind up being disappointed. Then, you have to go back to the drawing board, hoping that the next one will be better. This makes you wonder why you are still single when most of your friends have figured out how to make it to the marriage promised-land?

If you want to be the next single gal to cross the finish line, you need to take a hard look at yourself and your dating situation and make some drastic improvements. That is not to say that the men are perfect in their dating habits because they are not. However, you need to be accountable for your own actions and put your right foot forward. Keep in mind that Noah's ark was 2 by 2 and in our society, most people who truly want to get married, actually get married.

Here are 10 questions to consider if you want to determine if you are a girl who is destined to be single forever. If a lot of these resonate for you, it's time to make some real changes, so you can get yourself married.

Are you the only one of your girlfriends who is still single? If you are, you need to ask yourself what your friends did that you aren't doing when it's comes to dating and make some changes.

Do you have a list of dating rules that a man must follow or you won't give him a chance (even though most of them are outdated and irrelevant to whether or not he will make a good husband and partner) ? If you are a "Rules" girl, and spend more time noticing if he calls you 5 days before a date to ask you out, rather than noticing the kind of man he is and the kind of father he will be, break the habit.

Do you tell yourself that you don't care if you ever get married, but, in reality you cry yourself to sleep over it? Stop rationalizing. You want to get married, get yourself married. Remember how you got an "A" in school when you really worked hard for it or how you got that promotion at work that you wanted? Do the same thing with your dating.

Do you choose to only hang out with your married friends? I know you love your married friends and you definitely should spend time with them. However, you also MUST find single friends with whom to go out so you might actually have the opportunity to meet a guy.

Do you refuse to online date or use dating apps even though everyone does it and you are hurting for dates? I know you think that online dating and dating apps are "just not for you." However, if you are single and truly want to get married, you really don't have the luxury to say that. Go check out some of the newer apps like mine, The Dating Lounge, and jump in.

Do you make excuses about why you are single instead of taking responsibility for your part in it? Excuses are just excuses. Stop with the excuses and figure out what YOU can do differently to get different dating results.

Do you blame the men, your job, the city you live in, your parents, anyone and everything for your "singleness," instead of thinking about what you can do differently? Stop blaming everyone else. Blame yourself for a change. Come up with 4 things you could change about your dating and try making one change, every week for the next 4 weeks and see what happens. I bet you will see results.

Are you set in your ways about your life and are not willing to bend at all? When you are trying to get married, you do not have the time to be set in your ways. Relationships and marriage take a lot of compromising. So, choose 2 things you won't bend on and then decide to be flexible about everything else (think about getting rid of your need for the dishes to go in the dishwasher the moment they hit the sink and other things like that.)

Are you of the mindset that you have waited this long for Mr. Right, you might as well wait for perfection instead of being realistic? There is no such thing as perfection. I don't care how long you have been looking for Mr. Right. If you give up looking for Mr. Perfect, you will actually open up the space to find My Perfect "for you."

Do you never give a man a chance because you have a laundry list of "must-haves" which creates unrealistic expectations? When you are single, you need to be realistic. You need to be looking for a mortal human being instead of Mr. Fantasy. Review your list of "deal-breakers" and remove anything with which you can live without. If you do this, your dating world will immediately become filled with infinitely more possibilities.

What other things are indicators that a woman will be single forever?

There's Only 8 Meters Of This Fabric In The World, And Karl-Anthony Towns' Suit Used Two And A Half Of Them

If you're going to get selected first overall in the NBA Draft, you need to make sure swag levels are way, way up. And Karl-Anthony Towns, who the Minnesota Timberwolves selected on Thursday night with their number-one pick, did not disappoint.

On his big night, the basketball player said his stylist told him there's only eight meters in the world of the fabric used to make his herringbone jacket.

"And this suit is two and a half of it," Towns said. "So he really blessed me with a one-of-a-kind suit for this special day in my life and I really can't thank him enough."

Towns starts his story near the beginning of the video.

The jacket also featured a leather detailing on the collar, and Towns added that the idea for the jacket came from him, his stylist and his sisters.

"This outfit really was special to me," he said.

Lululemon Recalls 300,000 Tops That Are Hitting People In The Face. Seriously.

If you thought the controversy surrounding Lululemon's sheer yoga pants was the end of their clothing kerfuffles, then you haven't been hit in the face with the brand's hard-tipped drawstring tops.

Lululemon is recalling over 300,000 women's tops that have elastic drawstrings with hard ends, because they have "whipped some of the wearers in the face, causing injuries," CNN reports.

So far the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that seven injuries have been reported. As a result, the Vancouver-based company is recalling the clothing items causing the mishaps, a total of 133,000 tops in the U.S. and 185,000 in Canada.

"Our main priority is ensuring the product works for our guests, and we believe this is the necessary proactive action," a spokeswoman for Lululemon told CNN.com. "We are committed to making our product right for our guests and regret any inconvenience this may have caused them."

In the meantime, the CPSC suggests that customers who own the drawstring tops should stop wearing them, remove the draw cord or contact Lululemon to request a new, non-elastic draw cord with written instructions on how to replace the draw cord.

Tops recalled include the Carry and Go hoodie, Cool Down jacket, Course-ette jacket, Cozy Up jacket, Dance Studio jacket, Dance sweatshirt, Don’t Hurry Be Happy pullover, Gratitude wrap, Necessity jacket, Proactive jacket, Refresh snap up, Run Sun Blocker pullover, Run Track N Field jacket, Run With It jacket, Sanctuary jacket, Savasana tunic, Sing Floss Travel jacket, Stow ’N Go jacket, Stride jacket, Summertime tunic, Varsity hoodie, Victory jacket and Wear With All jacket.

Though Lululemon attests there haven't been any "serious injuries" from the tops, it's good to see that the company isn't going to risk them happening.

There's no shortage of talented fashion illustrators out there, but not many take their work to the streets like this.

Shamekh AlBluwi, an architect and artist living in Jordan, creates illustrations in a totally new and innovative way by using street scenes to complete them. He cuts out solid sections of sketched clothing, then uses things like buildings, trees and clouds to serve as color and pattern.

Twin Sisters Have Worn Matching Clothes Every Day For Nearly 15 Years

0

One of the perks of having a sister is being able to raid each other's closets and share clothes. But for twin sisters Kathy Heffernan and Rose Coles, sharing clothes has a completely different meaning.

twins
Identical twins Rosey Coles and Kathy Heffernan on vacation in 2013.

The sisters have been dressing alike for nearly 15 years -- and they're in their 60s. "The reaction is very good actually, and we get lots of nice remarks," Coles told the UK's Express. "People always say it is unusual to see twins that are our age dressing the same."

The identical twins began dressing alike when they were teenagers but stopped when they got married and no longer lived together. Then, in 2000, both of them became single again. They decided to move closer to one another in Aldershot, England and to start dressing identically again.

twins
Rosey Coles (left), and Kathy Heffernan, both age 10 in 1963.

Every day since then, the duo wear the exact same outfit when they go out, whether it's to work, to go on vacation or to hit the town for a night out. And it's gotten them both quite a bit of attention. "When we are on our own separately, people don't take notice of us. But when there are two of us, it is like a magnet," Coles said, adding that people often ask to take pictures with them. "It makes me feel like a celebrity a bit, I think I know how they feel a little bit now," Heffernan said.

The pair say it was an easy decision as they have similar tastes in clothes and have become closer since their marriages ended. "We just got close again. It just happened sort of automatically ... It made us feel very close again," Heffernan said.

It's not uncommon for twins to dress alike, especially as children. Occasionally, adult twins do as well. One photographer even made a photo series of twins of all ages dressing alike.

As for Coles and Heffernan, they now live next door to one another, which we can only guess makes choosing outfits much easier.

"We'll do it forever -- as long as we can," Coles said. "We just enjoy it."

New Survey Shows Just How Much Men In New York Love Their Beards

0

Beards, polarizing as they may be, are really popular. Just ask the men of New York City.

A new study by German consumer-goods company Braun shows that out of 1,000 New York men surveyed, 67 percent have beards, with the highest percentage living in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Over half of the men say they feel more attractive with a beard (and we can't argue with them on that one.)

According to the survey, it takes 67 days to grow what's considered "the perfect beard," which means there's no time like the present to get a head start for fall.

Check out more findings from the survey below.

Patriotic Clothes (That Aren't Cheesy) To Wear This Fourth Of July

canva 2

Just like fireworks and hot dogs, festive clothing is essential for celebrating the Fourth of July. But let's face it, Independence Day and fashion don't exactly go hand in hand. You're more likely to associate the holiday with cheesy graphic tees than a cute dress you might actually wear when the weekend is through.

Upon further investigation, though, it turns out that there are, in fact, ways to rock stars and stripes in style. In fact, with so many fashionable, affordable options to choose from, you'll be all set for every day of the long weekend.

Just be careful with that mustard.

Kendall Jenner Breaks Kim Kardashian's Instagram Record

Kendall Jenner is officially more famous than Kim Kardashian. At least, on Instagram.

The 19-year-old "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star has broken the record for the most liked photo on Instagram, which was previously held by big sister Kim.

The winning photo shows Kendall lying on the ground in a white lace dress with her hair sprawled out, forming heart shapes around her head.

The pic, which was taken in May, now has over 2.4 million likes. It surpasses the iconic photo of Kimye exchanging a kiss in front of a massive flower wall at their wedding. (If you want exact numbers: Kendall's pic is at 2,484,857 likes, and Kimye's is at 2,473,754 -- so close!)

Jenner shared her excitement about the news with a cheeky tweet:

Looks like Kendall is the one we all have to keep up with now.

Kim Kardashian Thought Her Career Was Over After Divorce From Kris Humphries

Very famous person Kim Kardashian thought her career would long be over by now.

In an interview with The Drum on Friday, the star admitted she believed her time in the spotlight was finished after her 2011 split from NBA player Kris Humphries.

"At the time when I was going through the divorce I did say to everyone, ‘You guys I think our careers are over. I hope you've saved your money. And now we'll just continue to do our clothing stores and continue to do what we started off doing before the show,'" Kardashian said.

"I was being very paranoid," she continued. "I just took some time off and the time was really good for me. I cancelled everything. I had a book tour, I had a fragrance launch, I had everything that you could possibly imagine and I just cancelled it all and I took time for me."

Kardashian has, along with the rest of her family, only rose to even greater prominence in the years since the split. One piece of potential evidence? Her high-profile marriage to Kanye West spawned the No. 1 most-liked photo on Instagram. That is, until yesterday, when one of younger sister Kendall Jenner surpassed the record.

So yeah. The Kardashian-Jenner empire seems to be doing just fine.
