Kanye West Allegedly Confronted Anna Wintour Over Lena Dunham's Vogue Cover (REPORT)

0
0
It's no secret that Kanye West believes Kim Kardashian deserves to be on the cover of Vogue, but would another star's good fortune really cause him to confront the magazine's editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour?

RadarOnline claims that West was outraged by the fact that Wintour put the "Girls" star Lena Dunham on the magazine's February cover, while she continues to overlook Kardashian. The website claims that West was supposedly in such a tizzy that he "demanded answers" from Wintour while at lunch at the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge.

A source claims that West confronted Wintour and insisted that his fiancee is "just as talented as Lena, if not more so." The insider reveals that West believes Kardashian has a much larger fan base than Dunham, and finds it "insulting" that Wintour is still refusing to make her a Vogue cover girl.

A rep for Vogue declined to comment when contacted by the Huffington Post, however a magazine "insider" told Gossip Cop that Radar's story is very "untrue".

It does seem doubtful that Dunham's cover would prompt West to confront Wintour given their well-documented admiration for one another, but the 36-year-old rapper has been very vocal about the magazine's efforts to shun the reality star.

"[When] I took [Kim] to the Met Ball and they put [photos] up on Vogue.com and tried to say she wasn’t there because they didn’t want a reality show girl there," West complained to Ryan Seacrest in October. "And there’s no way Kim Kardashian shouldn’t be on the cover of Vogue. She’s like the most intriguing woman right now. She’s got Barbara Walters calling her like every day ... and collectively we’re the most influential with clothing."

Blue Ivy is one lucky tot.

While us commoners can only pray for the chance to see Beyonce and/or Jay Z from the bleachers 50 yards away, little baby Blue Ivy has the privilege of running around backstage with her ultra-famous folks like it's no big deal.

Queen Bey shared the precious new photos of her 2-year-old girl having fun with mommy and daddy to her Tumblr page, Beyonce I Am, on Jan. 29. The only thing missing is Blue's new gold sippy cup.

Let's face it: Not everyone is born with the decorating gene. But if you want to make your place just a little nicer without having to spend your weekend completely overwhelmed at a furniture store, you can count on these designer tricks that will work in any home.

Your Curtains Should At Least 'Dust' The Floor Hanging your curtain rod slightly above the window also helps create the illusion that the ceiling is a little higher than it actually is.

If You Can't Commit To Any Color, But Hate White Walls..."Griege" Goes With Everything A cross between "gray" and "beige," this neutral is unobtrusive enough to not compete with any decor choices.

The Essential Exfoliation Guide

0
0
By now, you know why you need to exfoliate: Removing dermis-dulling dead cells improves texture and tone, unplugging pores, lightening pigmentation, and helping skin lap up those lovely anti-agers. It also encourages cell turnover, bringing healthy, younger-looking skin to the surface. Chances are good you can even tick off a handful of effective glow-getters — from physical exfoliants (think vibrating brushes and microdermabrasion) to chemical ones like retinol creams and glycolic peels.

Vanessa Hudgens Looks Stunning On Nylon Magazine Cover

Vanessa Hudgens is busy and loving it.

The former Disney star recently celebrated the release of her latest film, "Gimme Shelter," and made an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." Now, she's gracing the cover of Nylon's February issue.

vanessa hudgens

Hudgens is featured in the magazine's most recent issue, which includes an interview in which she talks about her "Gimme Shelter" role, upcoming projects and day-to-day life. Fans are buzzing about the transformation her career has made and how she has cast aside her good-girl Disney persona for grittier roles. For Hudgens, it's all part of growing up. "I don't think it's 'good girl gone bad.' I think it's more 'girl growing into a woman and being passionate and taking choices.' I have so much work to do, and I think I will always feel that way," she told the magazine.

Girl growing into a woman, indeed.

Check out Nylon to read more from the interview with Hudgens and see some bonus quotes that didn't make it into the printed article. The February issue of Nylon hits stands Wednesday (Jan. 29).

Ten Free Valentine's Gifts For Women

0
0
Six weeks after the big year end holidays, another gift-giving holiday appears -- Valentine's Day. While this day is limited to only one gift for a loved one, it can still present financial and emotional challenges, particularly when buying gifts for women.

If you have the means to buy a gift for a woman, you might go the traditional route of chocolate, flowers, jewelry or dinner out. For me, after a long and happy marriage that actually started on Valentine's Day, none of those sound unique or desirable. I'm very particular about both my chocolate and jewelry and prefer to buy my own. My home already has flowers in it, and I don't care to face the Valentine's dinner crowds at restaurants offering rigid seating times and a limited menu.

I do usually celebrate my anniversary and Valentine's Day with a dinner out on another day that week or a weekend away, although I don't feel either is necessary. Despite the ever-increasing desire to decorate life with the most expensive luxury items we can afford, I prefer consumable gifts that provide an experience. While this type of gift can be expensive (vacation, cooking classes, club memberships, etc.), it can also easily be free.

If you're a woman, and the idea of a free "experience" gift resonates with you, give a list like this below to your partner for those upcoming birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and, yes, Valentine's Day. Your list may look different than mine. If you're a man reading this, ask your partner how she feels about receiving something free and from the heart. Use the list below as a start and come up with your own free gift list. Of course, you can always package a free gift with a paid gift too.

1. A body or foot massage.
2. A free day to herself without the kids.
3. A home-cooked dinner, including clean up.
4. A playlist of her favorite songs.
5. A cleaned house, including laundry.
6. A offer to completely plan your next vacation.
7. A love letter (read aloud).
8. A "chick flick" movie night.
9. A digital album of her favorite photos.
10. A walk or hike together.

The simple things you do for a loved one are often the most appreciated and welcomed. And don't forget, words can be gifts too. For example; "I love you," and "Thank you for everything you do," are priceless.

5 Ways Millennials Can Toss Technology for Valentine's Day

0
0
The Millennial conundrum: we love technology, but we despise what it's done to romance. Yes, we are witty, easily bored and in need of constant stimulation, but has love really changed? Can Valentine's Day still be the same? Probably not, but that doesn't mean it can't be celebrated the good old fashioned way.

Many Gen-Y think-pieces speculate about our new ways of communicating and how they have changed dating -- the way we see it and the way we interact with our lovers. Online dating sites -- with their rise in number and subsequent rising popularity -- are now a mainstream part of a single's dating world. Tinder? I have married 20-something friends who 'play' Tinder a daily basis 'because it's fun.' But phone her for a date? Pshh... I remember maybe one guy out of the last 20 who actually picked up the phone and pressed 'call' to ask me out.

Raise a glass to texting, instant messaging, and social media; these 'advancements' have shoved the Internet and digital technology smack-dab in the middle of our relationships. From courtship to coupledom we keep constant tabs on each other with our thumbs. We've even downgraded non-verbal communication from Internet slang-ridden texts and 'LOL's' to cartoonish emojis -- because typing 'I love you' is so much more time consuming than sending a pretty emoji heart...

On Valentine's Day, Millennials want our partners to go old school. We don't want love texts; we want hand-written love letters. Reposting a picture of us on my Facebook wall is nice, now can you try printing it out and handing me a tangible version in a frame?

A word to the wise, and as the saying goes, you get what you give. So your Valentine's Day gift should probably go beyond something I can look at on my iPhone screen, unless you want your sex life to exist solely on a screen as well.

Thus, for us Millennials, a good old fashioned, fun and simple gift can go a long way on February 14th -the day we don't like to "make a big deal" out of things. Here are some of my favorite non-digital items from Millennial mastermind, AskMen.com editors and their Valentine's Day gift ideas that just, you know, aren't a big deal.

1. Encourage Love Letters, Not Love Texts
Texting is fun and all, but hey, sometimes it's nice to say something nice an alternative way, whether that's these cute cards or a note in a Star Wars journal.
2014-01-28-Nontextgifts.jpg

For Men: Star Wars Moleskin from Amazon.com.
For Women: You're Beautiful Cards from Fancy.com.

2. Ditch the Emoticons and Say it with Clothes
Gifting apparel is always easy and it's hard to tell what the other has or doesn't in their wardrobe. Something fun and current they can't find anywhere else is always a sure shot.
2014-01-28-Giftingapparel.jpg

For women: Beyonce crewneck sweatshirt from Beyonce.com.
For Men: I think you're... T-shirt from Fancy.com.

3. Don't Photoshop Him; Help Him Look Picture Perfect
Good quality beauty products make for great Valentine's day gifts for him because, chances are, he doesn't have that many and isn't super keen on shopping for them. As for women, well, they are always welcome! (If only to dress our bathroom counter with nice products.)
2014-01-28-Millennialbeautyproducts.jpg

For Men: Whiskey After Shave from Amazon and Cleansing Thermal Balm from Amazon.

4. Toss the Mouse and Hand Over a Crayon
Coloring isn't only for grade school, especially if it involves Kate Moss and your favorite hip hop artists.
2014-01-28-AdultColoringBooks.jpg

For Women: Color Me Good Kate Moss.
For Men: Color Me Good Hip Hop

5. Take the Games Offline and Off the Screen
Valentine's day gifts for men can be a tough call since it's typically easier to go the romantic route with women, but at the same time, anything fun goes. Plus, tabletop games -- and who said that couldn't include foosball -- are a great alternative to the aforementioned traditional dinner.
2014-01-28-NonDigitalGamesforAdults.jpg

For Men: Tabletop Foosball from Amazon.com and Marc Jacobs Playing Cards from MarcJacobs.com.

8 Reasons Watches Are Still Worth Wearing

0
0
Like VCRs and face-to-face communication, watches have lost their importance in modern life. We've got cell phones to tell us the time, not to mention our computers, tablets and whatever other gadgets the kids are carrying these days.

But we remain firm believers that watches are still worth wearing. Here's why.

It's rude to check your phone all the time.

Chefs at restaurants hate it, brides hate it and your mother definitely hates it. Peeking at your phone in the middle of something important, whether it be a date, a wedding or an interview, is often bad form. A watch makes it much easier to check the time on the sly.

With watches, you can check the time hands-free.

Got your hands full of shopping bags, books or, um, shopping bags? Checking the time on your phone is going to be difficult. Watches to the rescue.

watch

Sometimes, you just don't want to bring your phone with you.

It's already a struggle to tear ourselves away from email, texting and all the other distracting features on our small screens (Candy Crush, anyone?), so it can be freeing to leave your phone at home. When all you need is to check the time, your phone just isn't necessary.

You feel "naked without it."

After years of wearing a watch, many people grow attached. Feeling "naked" without your timepiece is a common feeling, and it's not a bad one. Own it.

watch

It makes it look like you put effort into getting dressed that morning.

Cleverly layering on necklaces, bracelets or rings can complete an outfit, but it also takes effort. (Hey, we're lazy.) But strapping on a watch makes an outfit feel complete -- in just jeans and a tee, the addition of a watch makes it look like you tried.

Unlike the rest of your work wardrobe, it's acceptable to go wild with watches.

Neon colors or risqué logos usually don't fly in the office, but watches are one small item with with you likely have free reign. A colorful face, a shiny band, even playful fonts for the numbers -- your supervisor would be hard pressed to get you in trouble for style statements as small as that.

watch

The kind of watch you wear becomes a part of your identity.

As one of our editors admitted recently, "I needed a Michele watch when I was a teenager." Like handbags, watches are highly visual symbols of status, association and identity. Just think about the business man you see wearing a Rolex vs. the hipster you see with the Casio gold digital watch -- each one says something about the wearer, intentionally or not.

Grown-ups wear watches.

Getting your first watch as a kid was a milestone because it meant something real: You had finally learned to tell time. (Extra points if it was an analog watch, not digital.) As an adult, wearing a watch just feels grown-up.

Great watches for men (that women can probably pull off, too):

Pharrell Williams' 'Hatty' Video Was Only A Matter Of Time

Well, this is great: Pharrell's super-catchy tune "Happy," which is nominated for an Academy Award, collided with his giant Smokey Bear hat from the 2014 Grammys. The result is a delightful parody video put out by i am Other, the creative company headed by Pharrell. We have a feeling you'll watch it on repeat until Oscar night.

Jennifer Lawrence Got Doritos All Over Her 'American Hustle' Dress Because She's Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence really, honestly, truly eats whatever she wants, whenever she wants, wearing whatever she wants. And if you needed more proof of the woman's sincerity, besides her kick-ass healthy body-image quotes, we've got it.

The Oscar-nominated costume designer of "American Hustle" spoke to Vanity Fair Tuesday (Jan. 28) and divulged details about Lawrence's character's iconic white dress. If you've seen the movie (or the posters, or the trailer), the dress Lawrence nearly spills out of -- all on purpose, of course -- was tailored just for her, made to accentuate her "every single lump and bump." But even a clingy dress can't get between Lawrence and her snacks, as costume designer Michael Wilkinson revealed.

And Lawrence was in the mood for Doritos.

"I'm kind of glad we [constructed four different versions of the dress]," Wilkinson said, "Because Jennifer Lawrence is a very ... let's say ... raw and intuitive young lady, and she's not against eating Doritos and snack food in her costume. So we were glad that we had a couple [backups]."

We can just picture the bubbly 23-year-old wiping that Cool Ranch dust all over her shimmery white frock.

Oh, Jennifer. You never cease to amaze us.

Canadian Style Icons: Umbra's Paul Rowan

Canadian Style Icons is a bi-weekly column authored by Daniel Eckler, the founder of MIJLO -- simple solutions for small spaces.

Necessity is the mother of invention, as the expression goes, and Paul Rowan's story attests to that.

2014-01-29-rowan.jpg

Born and raised in Toronto, Rowan graduated from George Brown in 1974 with a degree in graphic design. As a young man, trying to decorate a new apartment, he couldn't find any blinds that he liked. So he made is own. Problem solved. Necessity begat invention. But then others noticed them, and they liked them. So he made more. Sensing an opportunity, Rowan teamed up with a friend, Les Mandelbaum, and together they founded Umbra.

Thirty years later, Umbra is a design powerhouse, having won numerous design industry awards, and in 2000 their mesh garbage can was added to the permanent collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. One of their designs -- the fish hotel -- was even selected by Oprah as one of her coveted 'favorite things' -- no small feat!

But even after finding so much success and recognition, Rowan hasn't forgotten that young man with a necessity; Umbra proudly supports Canadian design education by partnering with schools such as Carleton University, OCAD, George Brown and Humber colleges. They also create and hold design competitions around the world.

Umbra now sells more than 2,000 home products through 25,000 retailers in 75 countries. All because Rowan's apartment needed some shade. A fact that the company proudly takes to heart: 'Umbra' is Latin for 'shade'.

Read on below for Rowan's thoughts on style:

What is your definition of style? And good style?
I like new style. Fashion is a great leader of style, it's amazing how fashion has been such a leader of style for so many centuries, rather than objects, but now I see more of a convergence. That's why we were able to do so well. People thought that objects around them were just necessary and they put up with them.

Now they're much more critical about things that are around them, they don't want a bunch of junk, and they also don't want to relate to something that's so cookie cutter like IKEA.

I think there is always a contrarian view about anything that's available at mass, they want something that's a little more original. I love bespoke things, we have some concepts here that are quite interesting in terms of random manufacturing. That's the kind of style I like, more original.

How do you describe your style?
Style for me is really personal. I want to be on-brand, living a style that's innovative. My brand is a kind of young brand, I want to be living in a young area. I live in Leslieville now. I live where there are more people younger than me than older.

Most people transition to a place where the age of other people is the same or older. I've gone the reverse, I told my wife -- she said let's move to Rosedale -- I said that's where people go to retire and die. My style, our style at Umbra, it's flexible, open-minded.

Why is style important?
Style's not just style on its own. Style is a reflection of who you are, it's like the objectcation of yourself. There's your spiritual self and style is the physical side. Also, I seek style in support of movements and design.

I support the way this guy hand dyed all his clothing. I support they fact that they take the time to do it. I support different movements in design, I am a symbol of it when I wear it. I live it. People always come up to me and say you have so much style, I'm my own curator of things I see, I like to have fun with it.

What makes someone a style icon?
Differentiation and being contrarian is definitely true, you never notice anybody that's a little bit different or following trend, they just blend right in. But people are attracted to that. There are a lot of unknowns about being attracted to newness -- how do you know you're not being stupid by actually liking something like that because you've never seen anything like it before. You have to have this kind of confidence in it.

There are a lot of reasons why you gain confidence about certain things. There are people that are models for it, particularly entertainers, thats why designers like to entertainers to wear their unusual fashion, because if they just put it on a normal person, it would be hard to believe. But when one of the divas wears one, "oh my god" -- it gives it credibility.

What's the Deal With All These Pouches?

0
0
For such a small article of clothing, men's underwear can certainly be overwhelming with the number of styles and options out on the market -- especially if you're not sure what's what (or available). Being skivvies enthusiasts, however, we at The Underwear Expert believe the more choices you have, the better. Here we'll break down the various types of pouches there are, and our top picks for each. Read on!

2014-01-23-huffpost1.jpg

1. Fly Opening
The most common front, this style features a vertical opening on the center or off the side of the pouch. Most boxer shorts have fly openings; and, while they're super convenient when you have to use the little boy's room, slippage does happen. Our recommendation is a pair of Charles van der Pear Boxer Shorts, which are made with an inner liner for extra support and protection.

2. No Opening
A closed front pouch means there's no risk of slippage, and everything stays exactly where it needs to be. This style may not entirely be the roomiest, nor does it allow for a lot of movement, but it's secure. Our go-to is from Wood Underwear, who make some of the softest and most comfortable closed front pouch undies around.

3. Horizontal Opening
This opening runs -- exactly as it sounds -- horizontally across the top of the pouch. We suggest these for active guys because they'll support your package even when you're on the go. Jack Adams is a particular favorite of ours, particularly their Army Fly Jock Brief.

4. Contoured Pouch
Underwear with contoured pouches feature a seam that runs down the middle of the crotch. Sounds pretty basic, right? You'd be surprised what a difference that little seam makes. The contour not only allows for a roomier pouch, but also helps support, define, and lift your package. We urge you try Obviously's Comfort Trunk, which has a center seam and side seams as well. You'll thank us for it.

Who Were Lawmakers Wearing At The State Of The Union?

0
0
If Washington is the Hollywood for ugly people, then it follows that Hollywood is the Washington for stupid people. And that probably makes the president's State of the Union address incredibly boring and utterly foreign for the folks in Tinseltown.

Luckily, we at The Huffington Post value the union part of the State of the Union. We felt it was our obligation to help our film industry brethren stay connected with the national discourse so that they could make even more movies where the White House explodes. (Free idea: "White House Down II: White House Double Down.")

In that spirit of inclusion, The Huffington Post decided in the course of our #SOTU coverage to ask a question that's a little more Hollywood's speed: Who are you wearing?

Sure, there was less Dolce & Gabbana and more Jos. A. Bank in the Capitol Tuesday night, but lawmakers knew there was a chance they'd be caught by cameras while watching the speech, and so donned their finest. Not all of them wanted to talk about it, though: One congresswoman decline to be named or filmed, saying the price tag on her Italian dress could cost her her next election day. But plenty of lawmakers did indulge us.

Watch the video above, created by Amber Genuske, to see who they wore.

Was Kristy Althaus Stripped Of Beauty Pageant Title Because Of Porno?

0
0
Yet another beauty pageant contestant is ensnared in a porn scandal.

In an in-depth investigative piece, Gawker makes a convincing case that Kristy Althaus, runner-up in the Miss Colorado Teen USA 2012 pageant, likely lost her title after an adult film she apparently starred in came to light.

Gawker has links to where readers who are so inclined can watch the full-length porno in question. The actress in the flick bears a striking resemblance to the woman in the red dress featured in the video below. WARNING: audio in this video is not great. Story continues below.

On one of the sites where the illicit film can be found, the actress is identified as " "Miss Teen Colorado Runner Up."

Gawker also discovered that, after the clip surfaced, Althaus' name and clip of her getting second place was scrubbed from the pageant's site.

The Huffington Post reached out to the producer of the pageant who did not immediately return a call for comment.

This is at least the second time in as many years that a beauty pageant contestant has been stripped of her title for stripping down.

In February of last year, former Miss Teen Delaware USA Melissa King lost her crown after it was revealed she had appeared in a porn video.

These days, King appears to have gotten over the loss and even poked fun at the controversy in September.

Writing for Policy Mic, Benjamin Cosman wonders why contestants' off-stage adult activities are problematic:

But why does it matter if these girls do porn? Aren’t they free to make whatever decisions they choose? Why should that have any effect on their beauty pageant prospects?

What do you think?

Anna Kendrick Reveals She Loves Beyonce, Netflix And Carbs For HuffPost's #nofilter

0
0
These days, our knowledge of celebrities too often originates with paparazzi images and snarky quotes by anonymous "insiders." After a while, it's easy to forget that stars are real people. That's why HuffPost Celebrity decided to launch the all-new #nofilter, a quick-fire question-and-answer series. Because how well do you know someone until they've shared their guiltiest pleasures?

On Twitter, Anna Kendrick describes herself as "pale, awkward and very very small," but in a new "non-Super Bowl" ad for Newcastle Brown Ale, she's a "beer commercial babe." (Although the ad won't actually air during the Big Game, Kendrick pretty much nails the whole "scorned actress who didn't actually get to star in a beer commercial" bit.)

While promoting the "If We Made It" campaign, which pokes fun at the ridiculous excess and over-the-top antics found in traditional Super Bowl commercials, the hilarious and pint-sized actress took the time out to take HuffPost Celebrity's #nofilter challenge and proved she really should be the awkward, yet approachable hot babe in a beer commercial.

You just had a huge weekend at the Grammys. How was it meeting Beyonce and Katy Perry?
Really crazy, really fun! I don’t really know why I’m invited to these things lately, but because I had a song out this year, I’ve been invited to stuff like the Grammys, which is a total priviledge and the most random thing possible.

But seriously, Beyonce or Katy, who would you want to go to dinner with?
Who would you pick? That’s a hard question! How could you choose?

When's the last time you cried?
When we wrapped “Into The Woods.” Whenever anybody says something nice to me, I’m kind of a blubbering mess. And when we wrapped, [director] Rob Marshall said goodbye to everybody, because he’s like the world’s kindest human being, and I was trying to hold it together and I lost it.

What's your guiltiest pleasure?
Well, I’ve been getting back into the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Easy Mac, especially. Whatever.

What's the silliest thing you've ever lied about?
Earlier today, somebody asked me the craziest thing that Beyonce said and kept asking me like, “What was something crazy that she said?” So, I started saying that she’s actually an alien. They really wanted to know something crazy that she said, so, sorry about that.

If you could commit a crime and get away with it, what would it be?
I … I would kill a man, for sure. Or a woman, whatever. I would hunt them down, like, on an island.

What's one thing you do when you're alone that you wouldn't do in front of someone else?
Ummm, shower?

What happens in your recurring dream?
I don’t know my lines for a role that I did in my last stage performance.

What’s the working title of your autobiography?
“Vertically Challenged.” [Kendrick is 5'2"]

Is it okay to recline your seat on an airplane?
Is it not okay? I mean, who doesn’t recline their seat on an airplane?! You mean, like, out of politeness? I have really small legs, so I don’t really think about it because somebody could recline their seat all the way back and it doesn’t affect me.

When do you feel most anxious?
Doing interviews.

They make you nervous?
Mmm, hmm!

What or who is overrated right now?
Paisley. I’m over paisley.

Brad Paisley?!
No, I mean like the design paisley. I think Brad Paisley is a national treasure. Design paisley is garbage.

Is a good friend hard to come by?
Yeah, because if they’re going to hang with me ... [laughs]

Describe one time you thought, "This is harder than it looks."
Oh, I used to ice skate on a pond when I was a kid and I thought it would be like riding a bike. But I tried to ice skate again a couple of years ago and my ankles were SORE. So kudos to all the people who can ice skate really well.

Tell us a joke.
I can tell you a joke that would offend everyone in this room and in your room. So, I probably shouldn’t!

What are you most afraid of?
I guess, clowns. I feel like I just heard that most children are afraid of clowns. Like 60 percent of children don’t like clowns, or something like that. I don’t know why they’re still around.

When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m on a Netflix binge and I am full of carbs.

Check out Anna's hilarious "commercial" for Newcastle Brown Ale below:

"It's a shame Newcastle didn't have the budget to actually produce and air this ad. I was really looking forward to a huge paycheck for doing no real work at all," she said. "Indie cred from award-winning films is great and all, but I can't buy a new car with indie cred."

Barneys Features Transgender Models In Awesome Push For Equality

Over the past few years, the modeling industry has taken some strides to redefine itself and maintain its relevancy in modern society. While there's still a long way to go, luxury retailer Barneys New York has taken it a step further this year with its spring campaign, which features 17 transgender models.

The campaign, entitled "Brothers, Sisters, Sons and Daughters," is meant to promote awareness of transgender issues and includes photos, videos and a short film. Women's Wear Daily spoke with Barneys creative director Dennis Freeman recently about the decision to use transgender models in the campaign. Freeman stressed the importance of progress in the industry to include the entire LGBT community, noting that compared to the inclusion of gay, lesbian and bisexual models, "it's striking how the transgender community has been left behind. It's disturbing and upsetting to see that."

Another goal of the campaign is to better acquaint people with the transgender community. Sawyer Devuyst, one of the models featured in the campaign, spoke to TIME this week about his own experience, stressing the broader issue of understanding what the ads can accomplish. He "hopes the campaign will make it easier to relate to trans people -- a trans woman featured in Rolling Stone helped his aunt understand that he was not alone."

Barneys is not the first to put the spotlight on transgender and gender nonconforming models. Between Andrej Peijic's Elle Magazine cover and one woman's decision to only model male clothing, it seems like the barriers to entry in the modeling world are slowly being broken down. Top jewelry designer Alexis Bittar even announced today that it now has a transgender ambassador. Clearly, transgender models have a presence in the industry like never before.

Still, it is certainly refreshing to see this move from Barneys, a major player in the fashion retail world. We hope other major department stores will follow suit.

Have a look at some of the gorgeous photos and the video below. Head over to Barneys.com for the entire story.

Rutgers University Offering Course Studying Beyonce

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Beyonce is one of the world's most scrutinized pop stars, and now that study is moving to academia.

The Department of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University is offering a course called "Politicizing Beyonce." Kevin Allred, a doctoral student who is teaching the class, tells the university's online news site that he is using Beyonce's career as a way to explore American race, gender and sexual politics.

The class supplements an analysis of Beyonce's videos and lyrics with readings from black feminists. Allred says he's seeking to help students think more critically about media consumption.

Rutgers also has a class examining the theology of Bruce Springsteen's lyrics.

Georgetown University has a class called "The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z," focusing on Beyonce's rapper husband.
