Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox's Fashion

$

0
She's beauty, she's grace, she's ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix's Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People's Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it's hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who's the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless's Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life's Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve "I don't give a damn" look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne's words, 'I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion -- Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well'

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won't be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, "Laverne's style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication."

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it's clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world's perception of the transgender community.

"I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world."

This Little Girl Will Totally Inspire Your Fall Wardrobe

If we're being honest, we've been planning our fall wardrobe for weeks now. And the time has finally come when we can break out our light jackets and faux fur scarves. While we usually look to the runways or street style blogs for inspiration, this week we're taking inspiration from 3-year-old Instagram star Kamilka.

We should start out by saying that Kamilka isn't like most toddlers. The Polish style maven has an insanely cool Instagram account (run by her mother, Anna Łukasiewicz), which documents her in oversized hats, camo leggings and leather jackets.

The tyke isn't quite old enough to dress herself yet, but she likes to help pick out her accessories, according to Łukasiewicz. We have a feeling this fashionista will have her own style blog in a couple of years, but until then, check out some of the cutest pictures from her account.

Kylie Jenner's Second VMAs Outfit Is Even Sexier Than Her First

Kylie Jenner never does anything halfway, so we were hardly surprised when her night celebrating the VMAs included a wardrobe change.

After attending the awards show, the newly turned 18-year-old slipped out of one short, tight Balmain dress into another. From there, Jenner headed to dinner at one of her favorite restaurants, Craig's, alongside her mom, Kris (and Kris' love interest, Corey Gamble), her sisters Kourtney and Kim, her brother-in-law, Kanye West, and of course, her boo, Tyga.

While this isn't what most people would wear to a family dinner, most people aren't Kylie Jenner.

eHarmony Wants To Set You Up... With Your Next Job

$

Aug 31 (Reuters) -- As a marriage counselor years ago, Neil Clark Warren saw first-hand how incompatibility led to unhappy matches.

So the compatibility factor was key -- even in the name -- when he co-founded online match-making service eHarmony in 2000.

Now, with surveys showing 70 percent of Americans are unhappy with their jobs, he thinks the same focus on matching personalities can work in the recruitment industry.

"Nobody has really matched personalities in terms of the applicant and the supervisor. That's not something that LinkedIn or Monster do," Warren said, explaining eHarmony's plans to get into the employment industry.

"(The career market) is such a big market that we do expect it to grow faster than our core product," the octogenarian clinical psychologist and eHarmony CEO said in an interview.

Finding love is not easy, and neither is the increasingly crowded online match-making industry.

The market is dominated by Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp, owner of Match.com as well as other sites for the lovelorn. IAC has also been gaining market share through acquisitions, including dating app Tinder.

Los Angeles-based EHarmony plans to launch its recruitment service -- Elevated Careers -- in 2016, and expects the business to contribute about 60 percent of the company's revenue within three years.

In the meantime, visitors to elevatedcareers.com can sign up either as a job-seeker or recruiter.

Work on the project has been under way for more than a year. "It's so important that Elevated Careers is developed to eHarmony standards via client feedback," a spokeswoman said.

The new service speaks to eHarmony's need to diversify as IAC/InterActiveCorp bulks up ahead of the planned public listing of Match Group, which will hold the company's dating businesses.

IAC pushed deeper into the mobile-based dating business last month when it agreed to buy PlentyOfFish.

Match Group did not respond to requests for comment on whether it plans to launch a recruitment service.

NO IPO FOR NOW

EHarmony has no plans to go public, Warren said.

"We love the position of being able to manage our own situation and not feel pushed by any public groups," he said.

"We're very much on the side of remaining private as of this time."

Daniel Kurnos, an analyst at brokerage Benchmark Co, estimates that eHarmony, whose biggest shareholder is Madrone Capital Partners, has a market value of about $1 billion.

The U.S. online dating market is worth more than $2 billion annually, he said.

In comparison, the online career market -- which includes LinkedIn Corp and Monster Worldwide Inc -- is worth about $6 billion a year, said Lisa Rowan of market research firm IDC.

The entire talent acquisition and staffing market worldwide is worth about $94 billion, she said.

EHarmony expects "high and double-digit" revenue growth in percentage terms this year, to between $275 million and $350 million.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) are expected to increase by 50-70 percent both this year and next, said Warren, who turns 81 next month.

But he said the contribution from Elevated Careers would be "minuscule" as eHarmony spends heavily to develop the business.

Both employers and job-seekers will likely pay to use the service, although some features could be free.

More than 100 variables will be used to match clients.

Apart from skills and experience, the algorithm will attempt to match job-seekers and employers based on such variables as personality - as on the eHarmony site - as well as work and social and cultural values.

Warren retired from eHarmony in 2007 but came back as CEO after five years to turn around the business, whose growth was slowing in the face of increasing competition.

He cut jobs, bought back shares from Sequoia Capital and slashed the nine-member board to two (now three) -- himself and "very close friend" Greg Penner, founder of Madrone Capital and now chairman of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

A compatible match, it seems.

You Can't Go Wrong With A Pizza-Printed Thong

One great way to calm your nerves: wear party panties. Party panties are silly, sexy or bizarre underwear that makes you feel like you've got a secret. Say, for example, you're giving a presentation to the CEO and you wear bacon-printed boy-shorts underneath your pantsuit. The CEO will never know, and you can feel less stressed, appreciating the fact that life's only as serious as you make it.

If this is your kind of thing, these salacious pizza panties may be worth adding to your underpants rotation if their crowdfunding campaign is successful.

The pepperoni g-string features an elastic waistband and one full, triangular slice to cover what underwear covers.

Phil Gonzales, the creator of these cheesy skivvies, assembled a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising $15,000 to fund production. A $10 donation grants funders a single pair of panties, and for $15, contributors can get the pizza panties delivered "fresh out of the oven" in a triangular box.

They probably won't satisfy any craving, but they're certain to please the refined, pizza-obsessed women in the world. Learn more about the campaign at Kickstarter .

18 Loafers You'll Love And That Will Never Go Out Of Style

The loafer is a classic shoe for all-around casual wear, but in our minds they simply scream "back to school!"

At one point or another in our academic lives, we all probably owned a pair of shiny loafers -- and maybe even rocked a few pennies in them. However, beyond our lives in classrooms, the simple yet sophisticated shoes still holds a place in our hearts and wardrobes. And the shoe's origins also have a pretty awesome past.

In 1936 George Henry Bass, the founder of the footwear company G.H.Bass & Co., handcrafted the loafer as we know it today. He called it the "Weejun," as the name and iconic design were inspired by a pair of slip-on shoes that were once worn by Norwegian fisherman

"The Weejun is simplicity at its best. It's classic, comfortable, easy to wear and always relevant," Jeff Goldfarb, managing director at G.H. Bass, told The Huffington Post. "There is something very special about a style so timeless and broadly accepted."

They were even embraced by the one-and-only Michael Jackson. The late pop star first wore a pair of black G.H. Bass Weejuns styled with his signature white socks for the 1983 "Thriller" video, and rocked them countless times after that iconic moment.

In celebration of the loafer's enduring style, we've rounded up the season's best versions of classic shoes. Tell us which ones you're thinking about slipping into in the comments section below.

Relive the Glamorous Excess of the 1970s in a New Book

Authors Mauricio and Roger Padilha have a way of unearthing subjects. In their previous books the duo brought to light the work of renowned artists Stephen Sprouse and Antonio Lopez, both legendaries in their own right. Their most recent tome, GLOSS (Rizzoli, 2015), is no different. The monograph covers for the first time, the work of photographer Chris Von Wangenheim, one of the terrible three, which included two other iconic names in photography: Helmuth Newton and Guy Bourdin. Unlike Newton, who insinuated an action about to take place, or Bourdain who captured a moment after it had happened, Chris caught the scene as it was unfolding in unapologetic and at times shocking manner.

Mr. Von Wangenheim was perhaps one of the most provocative photographers of all time. From the late 1960's all the way into 1981, when he died in a car accident, this artist captured the glam and excess of that era. Sex, violence, danger and vice were caught by the lens of his camera and put on display on glossy pages of magazines as fashion editorials for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar or Interview. The photographer also imprint his vision in fashion campaigns for iconic brands such as Christian Dior, Valentino and Calvin Klein.

The new book includes more than 200 images, some legendary, some unknown. The suggestive narratives are as inspiring now as they were then and continue to impress the industry. Almost every person who works in fashion is familiar with the iconic images of Lisa Taylor and Christie Brinkley being bit by dobermans, or the singer Grace Jones posing semi-naked among panthers.

Mr. Von Wangenheim's work might have faded with his passing but it wasn't forgotten. With this book the Padilhas hope to bring back one of the most celebrated fashion photographers of the 1970's and keep him in the forefront of fashion, a place from where he never should have left.

2015-08-26-1440631463-3515813-_square.jpg

Well-known fact: You can't trust everything you read on the Internet. Yes, the Internet -- even our favorite source of inspiration, Pinterest -- is filled with half-truths and exaggerated claims. It fills our heads with false hope of excellent results from beauty concoctions that cost pennies to make. And we've all fallen victim to particularly enticing pin or two... Scroll through for the nine worst beauty tips on Pinterest!

Applying Eyeliner to Your Eyelash Curler
2015-08-26-1440631521-4169582-1eyelashcurler.jpg
This is one you've probably seen dozens of times. Apply eyeliner to rims of your eyelash curler, then curl. This quick trick is supposed to save you time by lining your eyes and curling your lashes at once. But if you've tried it, you know the eyeliner left behind is hardly as even and thick as the pictures online depict. If you're really in a rush, choose one or the other--curl your eyelashes or line your eyes--not both. (Curling mascaras comes in handy on busy mornings, too.)

DIY Hair Removal With Coffee Grounds and Baking Soda
2015-08-26-1440631627-180077-2powder.jpg
Given that the results from store-bought hair removal systems aren't always stellar, we wouldn't expect a huge difference from coffee grounds and baking soda (except maybe decent exfoliation, which never hurts).

Putting Listerine on a Pimple

Yes, alcohol dries out pimples, but it also dries out the healthy, surrounding skin. Leave the oral hygiene products for your mouth only.

DIY Self-Tanner Using Black Tea
2015-08-26-1440631748-6544403-3tea.jpg
There are a few challenges with this one. First, application. Sunless tanning is enough of a project as it is. For this recipe, you have to make the tea, let it cool, then put it in a spray bottle and spray on five layers Second, even though some people really like this method, the tan only lasts until you shower. It's a lot of work with not a lot of payoff. But self-tanners are loaded with chemicals. If you're looking for a DHA-free self-tanner, try Hylamide's Glow Radiance Booster ($32).

Mayonnaise Moisturizer
2015-08-26-1440631802-6558680-5mayonnaise.jpg
Mayonnaise and baby oil as moisturizer? No. Try it as in an intensive mask on dry areas like elbows and knees for 20 minutes instead. Or take a cue from Blake Lively and use it as a hair mask.

Oreo Cookie Mascara
2015-08-26-1440631911-8989561-6oreos.jpg
Eyelashes that smell like Oreo cookies may not be the worst thing in the world, but we imagine cookie dust in your eyes wouldn't be the best either. Plus in the time it takes you to gather hydrogen peroxide, an empty lip butter tin, primer, a spoon, cotton balls, a clean spoolie, water, and Oreos and then de-cream the cookies, mash them up, and mix the ingredients, you could have tracked down a good old store-bought version.

Kitty Litter Face Mask

This one this a little scary. Yes, bentonite clay (one of the main ingredients in cat litter) is an ingredient in many clay face masks, but the possibility that you could be scratching your face with kitty litter is too high for us to chance it.

Using Hair Spray as Makeup Setting Spray

Ireland Baldwin's Topless Photo Manages To Bypass Instagram's No-Nipple Policy

Ireland Baldwin might be topless in her latest Instagram photo, but there's no rule-breaking here.

The 19-year-old, who has been known to bare it all on the beach, shared a photo snapped of her taking off her wetsuit on the sandy shores of Big Sur, California, on Instagram Sunday. Although she is topless in the snapshot, a bumblebee covers her nipple, making it an acceptable photo under Instagram's no-nipple policy.

"To be honest, I think that it's so effing stupid, because there are boobs and nipples all over Tumblr, all over Twitter, all over the world," Baldwin previously told Cosmopolitan about the social platform's ban on female nipples. "Just walk around and there are boobs all over life, and in great artwork, in classic paintings, and in sculptures; it's everywhere. Instagram is just behind the times."

This Artist Is Changing the Lives of Domestic Violence Survivors, One Tattoo at a Time

Scars may never disappear. Women who have suffered domestic violence can be haunted for life by the marks of abuse they carry on their bodies. A "lifetime mark," however, can mean something different; Flavia Carvalho, a tattoo artist born in Curitiba [Brazil], reinvents the term. The project she developed two years ago, dubbed "A Pele da Flor" (The Skin of the Flower), seeks to transform scars on women's bodies into beautiful, empowering and transformative tattoos. In this interview, she discusses her ideas and experience.

Some of the below images may be considered graphic.

How did you become a tattoo artist? Are women tattoo artists still negatively perceived?

Flavia Carvalho (FC): I've always enjoyed drawing, and when I started studying Biological Sciences at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), I started working on scientific illustration. My colleagues and friends from school insisted that I experiment with tattooing. I started as a tattoo apprentice, assisting an artist who taught me how to assemble a tattoo machine. Soon enough, I started tattooing my "guinea pigs" in college. It was a long and difficult journey. Then, I worked at two different tattoo parlors before I could have my own studio.

I can't claim that women tattoo artists are subject to prejudice per se, but tattoo artistry is dominated by men, and it is indeed very difficult for women to break into this industry. At the tattoo convention here in Curitiba, out of over 150 tattoo artists in 100 booths, I was among only six women artists. Out of the tattoo contest's 32 prizes in different categories, only myself and one other woman took home awards. It has been very hard for me to achieve recognition in this field, and I can clearly see how much emerging women tattoo artists struggle as well.

tattoo

Could you talk a little more about your project? How does it work?

FC: The idea of the project is very simple: it is a voluntary service for tattooing over scars that have resulted from domestic violence or from mastectomies. I run the project alone, since no other tattoo artist has expressed interest in participating. I started the project quite recently, and I had no idea it would receive this much media attention. It began very spontaneously. As I said, my services are a hundred percent voluntary, and the only "cost" women need to invest is to choose a design for their tattoos!

Where did this idea come from?

FC: It all started about two years ago, when I worked with a client who wanted to cover a large scar on her abdomen. She told me that she was at a nightclub, and when she turned down a man who approached her, he stabbed her with an switchblade. When she saw the finished tattoo, she was extremely moved, and that deeply touched me. I was suddenly struck by the idea of providing free tattoos to women who were left with scars following domestic violence or mastectomies. Each tattoo would act as an instrument for empowerment and a self-esteem booster.

I refined the project this year, and I proposed it to a few NGOs; the Municipal Secretariat of Policies for Women, for instance, has applauded the idea. We also received support from the fan-page of the City of Curitiba, which wrote a post about the project that went viral.

The project's name refers to the Portuguese expression "A flor da pele" (deeper than skin), which speaks of how strongly we feel when facing an extremely difficult or challenging situation. "A Pele da Flor" also alludes to the fact that all of us women are like flowers and deserve to have our skin protected and embellished.

tattoos

The girls who get your tattoos wear new marks on their bodies: ones that show resilience instead of fear. How has your work been received among these women?

FC: The feedback I have gotten from women who were helped by this project has been extremely surprising. The sense of affection, sisterhood and camaraderie is deeper than I ever imagined. They contact me from all over the country, as well as from abroad. They come to the studio, share their stories of pain and resilience, and they show me their scars. Embarrassed, they cry, and hug me. Then we design the tattoo and we schedule the session. They become excited, optimistic. It is wonderful to see how their relationship with their bodies changes after they get the tattoos. I follow many of them on Facebook, and I see how, after being ashamed of their scarred bodies, they now post pictures in dresses, and they look happy, changed. It is transformative.

What kind of impact has your worked created beyond the transformation in the lives of the tattooed women?

FC: It helped to raise the issue of domestic violence, both in the press and among interest groups. That was also the intention of this project.

Which story moved you the most?

FC: They all move me, but the one that shocked me the most was the story of a 17 year-old girl who dated an older man and, for months, suffered from the physically abusive relationship. When he wanted to break up with her, he scheduled a meeting, and after they began to fight, he stabbed her several times in her abdomen, and violently raped her. She ended up with a perineum tear, had to undergo a number of surgeries and spent several days in the ICU. She is so young, and she has been left with so many scars. The aggressor, however, was a first time offender, so he is still out on the streets.

You work with women who have been abused. Have you ever received any chauvinistic or threatening comments?

FC: Comments have not been directed straight at me; after all, men fear empowered women, right? [ she laughs]. I saw a few malicious and derogatory comments on some of the news articles published, but they were all so empty and foolish (the kinds of comments by haters or trolls) that they did not bother me.

In your own words, what is the importance of a project like yours?

FC: It is a grain of sand; the world is full of things that need to be addressed. We have a long way to go regarding protecting women against violence.

tattoo

Any plans for the future? Partnerships with organizations that protect women, maybe?

FC: The Municipal Secretariat of Policies for Women and I intend to establish a partnership with the Women's Police Station, in order to offer my services in a more active and direct way to women that go there to report incidences of violence. I will also participate in the Women's National Day in November, and the Pink October events, in partnership with Hospital Erasto Gaetner, which helps women that undergo mastectomies under the United Health System.

Little Ballerina Shows The Beauty In Helping Kids Pursue Their Dreams

Romanian photographer Mihai-Cristian Andrei hopes his photos of a young ballerina will inspire people of all ages to pursue their passions.

Andrei photographed 12-year-old Anca dancing in the streets of Bucharest as part of a project he calls "Urban Swan," which contrasts the beauty of the ballerina's grace and the roughness of her urban surroundings. Anca has been dancing for five years and has always impressed her parents and family friends with her expressiveness, the photographer told The Huffington Post.

"Ballet is an art of expression, and that’s how she expresses best, through grace and devotion," Andrei told The Huffington Post. "She wants to share with the world what can be achieved through hard work and dedication."

Anca had a bit of a stomachache on the day of the photo shoot, but the dancer was determined to push through. "The whole experience was a big lesson for me," the photographer said. "Anca showed me that she’s not dreaming for success but working hard for it even though she is only a child."

The photographer hopes that people who see his photos learn that kids can be "tough as iron" and powerful in their commitment to their dreams. “Children aren't coloring books," he said. "You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors. Believe in them, guide them, give them the opportunity and with their passion they can move mountains."

Miley Cyrus Has No Squad Goals Because She Likes 'Real People'

Miley Cyrus is on a roll.

First, she -- as BET put it -- "basically called Nicki Minaj an angry black woman." Now, the New York Times published a new article including a remark Miley made about Taylor Swift's squad of friends, which could definitely be misconstrued.

While a pop star like Taylor Swift may be gathering “musicians, actresses, models, entrepreneurs,” she said, “I’m not trying to be in the squad.” She continued, “None of my friends are famous and not because of any other reason than I just like real people who are living real lives, because I’m inspired by them.”

You might think Cyrus didn't learn her lesson after getting called out by Minaj in the middle of the VMAs on Sunday, but it seems the 22-year-old made all these comments to the New York Times during an interview a week before the award show.

Seems she really didn't want to be a part of the squad ...

Real and Simple No. 2: Answers to Your Most Basic Etiquette Questions

$
0
0
Number two on my list of most asked etiquette questions includes both business and social quandaries and how to address them. Here are more answers to help you navigate the modern world gracefully.

Is the continental style of eating (fork in the left hand, knife in the right if you're right-handed, and the opposite for lefties) considered correct in the United States? Yes, either that style or the American one, where the fork is moved to the dominant hand after the food is cut, is correct.

Is it okay to arrive late to a dinner party? It's acceptable to arrive 5 to 10 minutes late to a dinner party.

If hosting a lunch for a client, should you choose the location? When you're the host, you choose the location, but make sure it's convenient for the client.

If your friend is disabled, is it okay to ask if he or she needs help? Yes, offer to assist him or her but wait till the offer is accepted, and then ask what form of assistance is needed.

Can you use either a fork or a spoon to eat dessert? Yes. If the dessert is a cake or a pie, use a fork. For ice cream or pudding, use a spoon.

At a formal table setting, what is the correct height for a centerpiece? Use a centerpiece that is not higher than 14 inches; that way, guests can see each other across the table.

In a formal business letter, is it okay to use the honorific Dear Sir? The correct greeting for a first-time formal business letter is to always use the first and last name of the recipient if possible. A letter addressed to "Dear Sir/Madam" will most likely get tossed.

Is the maître d' in charge of the kitchen? No, the mâitre d' is in charge of all floor service, also known as "the front of the house."

When you arrive for a business meeting, is it okay to ask for coffee? It's acceptable to ask where to hang your coat or where the restroom is, but never ask for coffee or any other beverage unless it is offered to you.

When greeting a client in a restaurant, should you take the lead or let the maître d' seat the client? It's your job to follow the mâitre d' and then indicate where your guest should sit. Think of yourself as a movie director: you direct the production.

9 Habits Of The Timelessly Stylish Man

$

Fashion is fickle, and the struggle to keep up is real. You’ve tried all the latest trends, but now what you really strive for is a classic look, one that transcends the fads. You just want to look good -- and would it kill Jim from Sales to notice your sick new Christian Louboutin Alpha Male Flats?

We’re here to tell you that, for one thing, Jim will never notice those amazing and iconically red-soled loafers, but also that there are easier (and less expensive) ways to be king of your own classic style. We’ve partnered with Dockers to ask style experts about the adoptable habits of the timelessly stylish man.

1. The Timelessly Stylish Man knows that less is more.
sean connery
Subtle, not stirred.

“[. . .] guys know more than ever about the latest trends and fashions,” explains Brian Sacawa, the author and creative director of the popular men’s style blog He Spoke Style. “And this can have the effect of stoking some pretty serious sartorial one-upmanship.” Don’t play that game; according to the ever-in-vogue Sacawa, men who are the embodiment of subtlety nail the classic look. “You'll look much better in a well-tailored navy suit with a simple white button-up and crisp pocket square fold than combining some of the wildest trends you saw in various Pitti Uomo street style photos.”

2. The Timelessly Stylish Man has a trusted relationship with a reliable tailor.
dapper man
You're custom made. Your clothes should be, too.

An ill-fit ruins a great piece of clothing. It often strikes men who may have recently lost a significant amount of weight and are trying to figure out their new shape and size. Have your clothes taken in. You don’t have to accept an off-the-rack fit. Size up to fit the largest part of your body (arms, shoulders, leg length, waist) and bring it to a tailor you know and trust. Take the time to talk to your tailor so he understands what kind of fit you like. Every piece you take there should come back like it was made just for you.

3. The Timelessly Stylish Man never fears “Dry clean only.”
suede
Start with the shoes, then move up.

Suede, leather, cashmere ... all of these fabrics are amazing, and all of them need the gentle hand of a dry cleaner. Remember, they don’t need to go in after every wear. Most pieces of clothing should be worn two to five times before they’re sent to be laundered.

4. The Timelessly Stylish Man knows it’s all about the bass-ics.
styling kid
Fast learner.

A pair of khakis, simple street sneakers, white button-down shirt, an analog timepiece, slim leather dress shoes, well-tailored suit, solid-colored ties and a leather briefcase. It’s great to dabble in this season’s latest obsessions but be aware that they become passé as quickly as they come into style, so don’t fill your closet with them. Having basics that never to go out of fashion will allow you to appropriately pair and accessorize with some of the trendier items.

5. The Timelessly Stylish Man has a trademark scent.
coffee guy
We bet this guy smells terrific.

A dapper man is a good-smelling man. Scent is as essential to a sharp look as the right shoes. It’s another way for a man to put his distinct signature on an ensemble. But proceed with caution. It’s important not to overdo it on the cologne or go with too potent a fragrance. When choosing a scent, it’s usually best to try lighter, fresher aromas first and build up from there.

6. The Timelessly Stylish Man understands value and quality.
whitney young
When in doubt, dress like Whitney Young.

Let’s try a math problem. If Jack buys a pair of Allen Edmond wingtip oxfords at $300, which he keeps and wears for seven years, and Bill buys a pair of Skechers for $70 that he replaces every eight months, who is getting the better deal? We’ll help you out. Jack is the clear winner. Not only do the Allen Edmond shoes look infinitely better than Skechers, higher-end apparel and accessories are usually going to last longer. If you choose an evergreen look like oxfords, it will be worth the $20 to repair if they do start to fall apart around year seven.

7. The Timelessly Stylish Man knows the rules and bends them.
pink jacket
Pink jacket? Go for it.

Most men could spout out the commonly recognized rules about trouser length, tie width and wearing dark socks with dress shoes. “If everyone followed the rules to the letter, we'd all look somewhat similar,” says Sacawa. “A man’s personal style emerges partly from the way he subtly (or not so subtly) breaks those rules.”

8. The Timelessly Stylish Man looks in unlikely places for inspiration.
heights
You can stay a little closer to the ground, though.

Get it out of your head that there’s nothing in the women’s department for men and vice versa. You may find your perfect briefcase or your new favorite jean jacket there.

Kylie Jenner added another hole to her body.

The piercing aficionado got her middle cartilage done on Monday, and Snapchatted the whole thing. Dressed in a bra and spandex pants, Jenner sat as the technician took a needle to her ear while her friend stood nearby.

The end result was a new gold dagger earring.
