Chrissy Teigen On How She Deals With Twitter Haters: 'Not Well'

0
0

One follows Chrissy Teigen on Twitter for the high-concept food pictures, John Legend candids and hysterical one-liners, but not infrequently, followers get the privilege of seeing Teigen shed all airs of contained celebrity and engage in the PR nightmare of defending herself against Twitter trolls.

Like this:

But while these interactions keep her followers laughing, the "FABLife" host told HuffPost Live on Thursday that she could stand to be less vulnerable to Twitter vitriol.

"If you follow me, you know how I how I deal with it, and it's not well," she affirmed. "I think the funny thing is when people get mad at me when I respond to them, but sometimes it might be the 500th time that day that I read that similar comment, so yes, maybe I snapped on that one person."

Teigen's interchanges read as funny, but the Sports Illustrated supermodel says there's a deeper sentiment behind her responses.

"John [Legend, Teigen's husband] always says that I'm too big of a fan of justice. I feel like I like to let people know when they've hurt my feelings, and I need them to know that they hurt me," she explained.

And if the fans are enjoying it, well, that doesn't hurt.

"I mostly try to do it for entertainment purposes," she admitted. "I don't ever do it to bully somebody."

Growing up as a Brown Girl: Aesthetics

0

2015-09-11-1441944646-2760127-IMG_7344.jpg

My body is political. You see, I am not pretty. I have hairy knuckles. I have a wider-set nose. I have hairy toes. My elbows are a darker shade of brown. I have hair on my nipples and around my bellybutton. I have a happy trail. My ears are not small, because I have flappy earlobes. My eyebrows have their own personality and thicker than any one I know, besides my dad. My leg hairs are so thick that when I first shaved my legs, I discovered large birthmarks that were once covered entirely by hair. I have had armpit fat ever since I can remember. I cackle; I do not giggle. I have a flat face, and high cheekbones -- passed down to me by my indigenous ancestors. In general, my face has very traditional indigenous features. I have thick legs and even thicker calves. My feet sweat, so that means my feet often smell when I wear closed-toed shoes. I have a greasy face. All these things have been pointed out to me, throughout my life, to accent the fact that I was not pretty. Or more importantly to remind me that European features were the epitome of beauty and I had none of the features nor the fragility of upper middle class performance.

Growing up, Telemundo and Univision had actresses and news anchors who all spoke my language -- but they never looked like me. I remember realizing that La India Maria looked the most like me, but she was the joke of most of the movies she starred in. She was kind, but presented as stupid and inferior... As a young brown, third-world little girl, I understood too well what was the message behind La India Maria.

Coming to the USA, it became more obvious to me that I was not pretty -- like having the realization that all the Disney princesses were white. Jasmine came into the picture when I was 7 and Pocahontas I was 9 -- but by then I already knew that I was not pretty. And while Pocahontas was the Disney princess I identified with the most, she did not look like me -- she resembled me, the prettier version: thin, tall, long-haired, brown perfection.

In turn, I internalized a lot of self-hatred and subconsciously even began to reject other women who looked like me, other women who were not traditionally (white thus) pretty, because somehow that made me feel better about myself. However, now I have come to the realization that my body and my features are representative of a people who were almost entirely erased by colonialism.

So yes, I have hairy knuckles. I have a wider-set nose. I have hairy toes. My elbows are a darker shade of brown, etc. All these things have been pointed out to me, throughout my life, to accent the fact that I was not pretty. Or more importantly to remind me that European features were the epitome of beauty, and I had none of the features nor the fragility of upper middle class performance. But all of those things make me beautiful, all of those things.

My brownness is beautiful, and not like those Latina actresses I saw on TV who were pretty and brown. I am beautiful because I ambrown.

It's New York Fashion Week... So Pamper Yourself

2015-09-10-1441923761-1290969-_DSC6801.jpg

Most kids spend an average of two years living in a dorm... I was a completely different story. When I was 14 years old, I went away to boarding school (despite what you're thinking, yes, my parents love me). After four years of high school and an additional four in college, I had spent a good eight years of my life living under the same roof where at least 20 other females also resided. Some would consider this hell -- and at times, it was probably worse than that -- but if there is one thing I learned from it all, it's that I love a good slumber party.

The hardest part about growing up is realizing the fact that adult-friend time often involves dinner reservations or after-work drinks. Why can't professional women paint their nails, swig liquor from the bottle and try on each others' clothes? So as the stress of the impending Fashion Week(s) started to set in, it dawned on me: We should probably rest up (aka pamper ourselves) old school-style before shit hits the fan.

And while my swigging days might've turned into more graceful sips, I'll never pass up an indulgent hangout. If we were going to do this, we had to do this right. So we packed up all the soft knits, latest fine jewelry arrivals and excessive amounts of Dr. Jart+ products we could find and proceeded to schedule a manicure appointment with Naomi Nails and head to The Standard, High Line.

What Opening Ceremony Editors Are "Hair-ing" At New York Fashion Week

Anna Wintour's bob is undoubtedly enviable and Anna Dello Russo's beach-kissed tresses are perfect for any Instagram filter, but sometimes hair upkeep can seem like more trouble than it's worth. For this Spring/Summer 2016 New York Fashion Week, the editors at the Opening Ceremony website decided to take the hair debate into their own hands. With a little help from Bumble and bumble, the editors' three different hair textures (Manic Panic green tresses, bleach-blonde curls and romantic waves) were transformed into styles that can last throughout the madness of this upcoming Fashion Week.

Head to the Opening Ceremony website to read more hair tips from Bumble and bumble stylists.

The Colors You'll Be Wearing Next Spring: Rose Quartz, Buttercup, and More

By Suzannah Weiss, Glamour

Sometimes the world of fashion has a bit of a crystal ball element to it--hello, we're all talking about spring 2016 now, before we've even started this fall! The color pros at Pantone traditionally reside as the seers who are providing our futuristic peek, releasing reports on what colors we'll be seeing a lot of in the future. They just wrapped up their research and have issued the official word on what's going to be hot for spring 2016.

"We saw a movement toward very calm shades contrasted with specific pops of bright primaries," Laurie Pressman, VP of Pantone's Color Institute, told us. "We [always] select ten colors because we feel that number allows us to express the full range and create a comprehensive color palette."

2015-09-11-1441992163-2179657-pantonecolorsspring2016swatchessizedw724.jpg

"We work with designers who will be exhibiting at New York Fashion Week in advance of the shows, beginning in early August. As we start to see the trends emerge, the team is able to differentiate tones and hues to find the exact shade that's popping up throughout many designers' collections," Pressman explained.

When checking out the swatches, know that all colors are not created equally. Rose Quartz is the number one shade, with 22.55 percent of designers using it in their spring '16 collections. Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, and Buttercup round out the rest of the top five. Per the experts, this means we're all searching for some peace.

"Serenity is a calming color that plays to the whole idea that we know we're still living in turbulent times," Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman told WWD. "Buttercup is all about sunlight, happiness and cheer. This one just speaks to give us a ray of sunshine, something to be hopeful about."

MORE:The Best Colors to Wear on a Job Interview, First Date, and More

Eiseman is a friend of Glamour--she spent time talking color with us earlier this year, revealing the best shades to wear if you want to make new friends, feel less stressed, or win an argument (though the same colors can mean different things for men and women).

The spring shades revealed today were gathered by examining designers' spring creations, but it's a bit more intense when Pantone selects its top hue of the year. It was a deep red Marsala for 2015, and we got the scoop on how that happened.

Tell All the Guys in Your Life: Stop Wearing Red

According to a new study out of Britain's Durham University, the color of power is also the color of aggression, making it an iffy choice for all kinds of situations. Red has long been touted as the spot-on color choice to command attention, but the study found that when ranking the same image of a man wearing three different colors, both male and female subjects found the red picture to be the most aggressive (and only the men ranked it as more dominant). Identical images done in red were also the most likely to be categorized as angry.

"The implications are that people may wish to think carefully about wearing red in social situations and perhaps important meetings, such as job interviews," Diana Wiedemann, a Ph.D. student from the school's department of anthropology who worked on the study, told a university news reporter. "Being perceived as aggressive or dominant may be an advantage in some circumstances but a disadvantage in others, for example where teamwork or trustworthiness is important." Hear that, ladies? Let the dudes in your life know that the power tie might work sometimes, but it could also go not so much in your favor.

See which colors are scientifically proven to make you feel happier and less stressed.

PS: For those out there who love that fiery polo, no matter what science says--it's from Massimo Dutti and you can shop it here.

Chrissy Teigen Reveals What It's Really Like To Double Date with KimYe

Seven months ago, while you were tucked into bed after hours of watching the Superbowl and eating too many wings, KimYe, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend dined together. Fresh out of a Rihanna Superbowl concert, they donned their most elegant couture and went to the Waffle House.

The photo went viral, but according to Chrissy Teigen in a HuffPost Live conversation on Thursday, the four slipped completely under the radar at the restaurant.

"It was just cool to go somewhere where nobody really cared about us," she said. "It's funny, because you don't really think anything of it in the moment, and then Kim tweets something out and it is international news. Which is pretty crazy! I mean, eating a waffle. It just made me happy to see them eating waffles and have that really travel."

What was the late-night snack conversation like? Very self-effacing, Teigen said.

"We usually make fun of ourselves. I'll be scrolling through my comments or something, we'll be looking at memes of ourselves... Kim is the first person to actually pull up a photo and laugh at herself when someone creates a meme," the "FABlife" host affirmed.

Kim and Kanye are "so down for anything," Teigen described, which is likely why they were cool to hit up Waffle House in that attire. But underneath those fancy clothes is a "genuine couple" with the "utmost love for each other," Teigen explained. "When you see them together, they are just the happiest couple I've ever seen -- so loving and affectionate."

Unfortunately there was no word on how to score an invite to future double dates with this dream foursome.

The "FABLife" premieres on Monday, Sept. 14. Check local listings here.

John Legend On Diversity In Fashion: 'I Think They Could Do More'

0
0

Singer John Legend isn't only a force in the music world, because he's getting his hands dirty in the fashion game.

For New York Fashion Week, Legend collaborated with AXE's White Label Collective to choose five young menswear designers and give them the opportunity to show their unique collections on September 10. Legend, along with designer Billy Reid and Esquire magazine's fashion director Nick Sullivan, mentored the up-and-comers prior to the main event.

The Huffington Post sat down with Legend to talk about this awesome initiative, and he expressed his thoughts on diversity in the fashion industry.

The singer doesn't have a style icon. Instead, he likes to dress like himself. "I like things that feel like they’re timeless and really well made and tailored ... things that make me feel confident when I leave the house," he says. So it's no surprise that he's backing designers like Ryan Barr and Savannah Yarborough, who specialize in custom designs and bespoke items. "They all deserve this opportunity and are doing cool stuff, different stuff from each other -- but they are all really talented in their own way," Legend adds. The other three designers include Stanley Cheung, Afriyie Poku and Kristopher Haigh

As a force in elevating unknown voices in fashion, Legend notes that the industry should also be inclusive and open. "I feel like fashion is making steps toward diversity, but I think they could do more," he says. Legend adds that fashion should effectively market to its customer base, which he describes as "a diverse group of people of different shapes, colors and sizes."

Another reason to diversify fashion? "It [would] show everyone out there different forms of beauty, that everyone can be beautiful in their own way and that fashion’s for everybody."

Well said, Mr. Legend.

Take a look at the AXE White Label Collective looks below.

This season, HuffPost Lifestyle will disrupt New York Fashion Week to ensure that it is an inclusive event for people of all skin tones, genders, sizes, shapes and personalities. Over the next week, we'll be highlighting designers, models and runway shows that are working to democratize NYFW. Help us make fashion week an event for EVERYONE by spreading our hashtag #NYFW4ALL and be sure to check out all of our coverage.

Adorable Dogs Wearing the Chicest Fall Sweaters

By Sophia Chabbott, Glamour

With all this talk about fall fashion trends, British women's wear designer Ruby Rufus Isaacs felt that the fashion industry was ignoring one very key, very cute, four-legged demographic: dogs!

"I noticed there was a huge gap in the market, as more and more friends and customers were looking to buy something beautiful for themselves and for their dog," said Rufus Isaac, who just launched her fall 2015 collection of Fair Isle, optic-print, and striped sweaters for your pooch. "I wanted to create a brand that focused on dogs looking as well dressed and fashion-forward as their owners, as well as keeping their best friends warm at all times of the year!"

Here are some of our absolute favorites from the Ruby Rufus collection--come on, how cute are these?!

Chloe the Mini Frenchie and Her Mom Loni Are Having the Time of Their Lives Sipping Champagne and Traveling the Globe

As it seems with all my new friends these days, I met this incredible woman and her dog on INSTAGRAM. Seeing that it has now become an Olympic sport for me, it's no surprise that the cute feed of @CHLOETHEMINIFRENCHIE became a regular in mine. We met for the first time during an April Fool's shoot for Barneys and later followed up at various dog centric functions. NO WONDER this dog has so many followers - she is cute as a button, and, as I have shared with her Mom, if the dog is missing, please come looking at my house! Amy Lombard came along for my playdate with Chloe!

2015-09-10-1441927528-4361638-mrssizzleamylombard1.jpg

Her Mom, Loni Edwards, is a lawyer turned entrepreneur and a clever one at that. Having worked hard and been on location without phone power, she decided that a clever new idea would be to have a charger built into her bag and VOILA! EmPOWERED WAS BORN.

Now licensing the patent to other fashion forward companies, Loni is enjoying more time with this delicious dog Chloeand we wanted to ask her a few q's about becoming INSTAFAMOUS.

What was the reason you got CHLOE?

To have a cute furry companion.

Were you interested in taking pictures before you got her?

Yes, I've always loved taking pictures.

When did you start her account?

I created her Instagram account when I got her to share her with the world. Her little face makes me so happy and I thought it would have the same effect on others. Now that she's become an Instagram star, we've been able to take spreading happiness a step further by using her fame to raise money for dog-focused charities. For her second birthday we threw a charity bash to raise money for the Humane Society of NY, and we recently collaborated with scarf line Donni Charm to create scarves for dogs with proceeds also benefiting the Humane Society of NY.

2015-09-10-1441927717-1048289-mrssizzleamylombard2.jpg

When did you know you had a star on your hands?

The first time she was recognized on the street by one of her followers.

What advice would you give people about growing their do feeds?

Take good quality photos, show personality and use relevant hashtags.

Who are some of her INSTABESTIES?

SO many! In LA, @MrBobaBear and @Frankenstein_Farts, in Florida @PiggyandPolly, in Boston @Nachodogg, in Chicago @Hamlin_the_frenchie and @cooper_the_frenchie, and in NYC @toastmeetsworld, @chloekardoggian, and @samsonthedood.

Anyone else obssessed with animal prints? I could never get enough. This is my favorite print combo. I purchased this cool cow print crossbody last summer, and it's still one of my faves. No matter what I wear it with I always pair it with my super comfy leopard heels. To finish off my casual day look I wore this beautiful long sleeve mandarin shirt (Orange will be a very popular color this fall) with my favorite high waisted jeans that fit like a glove. And, of course we can't forget the bling & accessories- a cool watch is always a must. Outfit details below.

Pull Yourself Together: Get a New Bra

0
0
2015-09-10-1441914530-7275213-ID100297638.jpg
When I feel like I'm all over the place, literally and figuratively, I know it's time to get a new bra. Maybe two. I'm serious. Don't overlook this vital piece of your wardrobe -- though I'm guessing you do, since, like me, you probably get dressed on autopilot and never realize how tired your titslinger has become.

While you wear a fraction of your wardrobe over the course of a month, your bras work overtime. And no matter how many you have crammed into your drawer, I'm willing to bet 20% of them are doing 80% of the heavy lifting, pun intended.

I was faced with the bedraggled state of my brassiere in the dressing room at Victoria's Secret last weekend. I had come for the perennially on-sale underwear (5 pair for $26) and thought maybe I'd try on a few bras, too. I took off my shirt. And good God. Had I left the house in this? My bra was loose and sagging, straps twisted and worn. When I bought it, the bra had been nude...or was it white? Alas, at this point, I could not tell.

This was going in the trash. Today.

I slid on a top-shelf Victoria Secret bra (the kind that doesn't go on sale) called The Showstopper. Smooth and seamless, this frosted coral beauty held my girls in a loving, satiny embrace, and I thought, This is what I should feel like all the time. Buoyant. Uplifted. Pulled together.

There was a study not too long ago, published in Psychological Science, that looked at the real-life effects of acting out metaphors; i.e, thinking out of the box, putting two and two together. Turns out, these metaphors derive their power from reality: literally thinking inside or outside of a box does change how you come up with ideas and solutions. Fascinating stuff.

So it's not a stretch to say that if you're currently toting your tits around in an ill-fitting, threadbare, seen-better-days brassiere, it's going to undermine your sense of support -- not to mention let gravity take its toll.

It also goes without saying that if you haven't been fitted by a pro, you need to be. Women are notoriously shitty at knowing what bra size they are. And until I was fitted at a la-di-da lingerie shoppe (and it was a shoppe, not a shop) on the Upper East Side, I had been wearing a 36B, when I'm really a 34C (or 32D, but those are tough to find). WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. And the day I wore a bra that fit, it was like going from a golf cart to a Lexus.

So, get thee to a shoppe or to plain old Vicky Secret and get some new shocks on your system. You can't expect to feel supported, strong, or resilient if your boobs are sagging and jostling at every bump in the road.

This has been a public service announcement. Ok, not really.

The Eye-Opening Evolution Of Miss America’s Body Over 95 Years

The Miss America pageant has been shaping beauty ideals ever since it first began in 1921.

PsychGuides.com, an educational website that provides information about mental health, tracked the evolution of Miss America's body type over the past 95 years. The GIF and timelines created by the website highlights just how unrealistic this image of the "ideal" body for the American woman really is.

The educational website found that while the average woman in the U.S. has gotten heavier since 1921, Miss America has gotten thinner. This information is more relevant than ever with the 2015 Miss America Pageant taking place this Sunday night.

Although the pageant started in 1921, the first winner wasn't crowned until 1922 which explains why the images begin in 1922.

The GIF above shows that the shift towards a dramatically thinner body type didn't happen until the late '90s, early '00s.

According to a BMI chart created by PsychGuides, the BMI of the average American woman has slowly increased while the BMI of Miss America winners has slowly decreased since 1921. The chart shows that in 1990 the average BMI of the American woman was roughly about 24.5, while the average BMI of a Miss America winner was around 18.

As PsychGuides points out, the pageant describes Miss America as a woman who "represents the highest ideals," the pageant's website reads. "She is a real combination of beauty, grace, and intelligence, artistic and refined. She is a type which the American Girl might well emulate."

Sadly, the average Miss America doesn't properly reflect how most of the women in America actually look. PsychGuides' research found that nearly a third of Miss America winners are considered underweight. (And it doesn't help that almost all of them are white.)

"While the underweight frames of Miss America contestants don’t necessarily represent disordered eating and exercise habits within that group, they can perpetuate an unrealistic expectation for the average female’s body," a PsychGuides press release said.

Although, the very existence of the pageant itself has been argued to be problematic, some parts of the contest are more archaic than others -- namely the swimsuit competition. While the swimsuit portion is one of the most well-known sections of the pageant, it exacerbates and magnifies the already existing (and unrealistic) cultural beauty standards in the U.S.

"Now more than ever, the ideal image of beauty portrayed by the contest inaccurately represents average American women," the press release said.

Scroll through the timeline below to see just how little the Miss America body type has changed, along with its blatant lack of diversity.

Miss America Kira Kazantsev: 'It's Not As Glamorous As People Think'

A new Miss America will be crowned on Sunday, which means audiences can look forward to seeing some stunning ballgowns, fun celebrity judges and a whole host of various talents.

But before the 2016 winner takes her crown, The Huffington Post sat down with Kira Kazantsev, the current Miss America, to get a behind-the-scenes look at what life is really like as the country's most beloved beauty queen.

Kazantsev dished on what it's like to travel 20,000 miles every month for a year, and how she juggles so many appearances while keeping things real, fun and stylish. And yes, we did ask about a "Miss Congeniality" reference that Kazantsev totally confirmed. Scroll down to read excerpts from the conversation, which have been condensed and edited for clarity.

HuffPost: What is a typical day like for you:

Kira Kazantsev: I travel 20,000 miles a month and I'm in a different city every two days. Usually I wake up, depending on the call time, about two hours before. I do my own hair, I do my own makeup. You know, it could be event one of five that day and I have to maintain [my look]. It's a lot -- it's not as glamorous as people think.

HP: Who provides your clothing?

KK: My clothes are provided to me by Joseph Ribkoff which is really nice. They travel very well. But other than that I'm on my own.

HP: For the Miss America pageant, do they give you a glam squad?

KK: Pretty much the girls do their own hair and makeup, but they do have people there to help you, touch you up, whatever it might be. They won't leave you high and dry -- there will be somebody to help you out!

HP: Do the girls help each other backstage at all?

KK: Yeah! Absolutely. There's so much going on -- it's 52 people squeezed into a pretty tight space. So there's constant [chatter, such as], "Is your curling iron on, can I use that for a second? I can't find my hairspray, can I borrow yours?"

HP: Do you really use butt spray?

KK: We do use butt glue! It does help for piece of mind. Nobody wants to see that when you're walking across the stage. Just cement that down and you'll be good to go!

HP: Who makes your dresses for pageants?

KK: My mom and a seamstress made my competition wardrobe both years for Miss New York. We went to Mood, got fabric for like 40 bucks, got rhinestones on eBay, and they concocted this thing, this amazing dress that I ended up winning Miss New York in.

I've always prided myself on being very frugal about it and showing that you don't have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars. I've never spent more than $500 on a dress.

HP: How do you travel with your crown?

KK: My carry-on always has my crown, because if the luggage gets lost than you're kind of SOL.

I also always have my makeup and an outfit, so for whatever reason if I get stranded and my luggage doesn't make it, I have the essentials -- my "Miss America kit."

HP: What's the most surprising item people might find in your closet?

KK: I don't have a closet! That's the thing I'm looking forward to most [when the year is over]. Just having hangers!

You can catch Kazantsev handoff her crown at the 2016 Miss America competition on Sunday, September 13 at 9 pm on ABC.

And as a bonus, check out Kazantsev performing "Cups" at HuffPost's office. Kazantsev performed a similar red cup routine for her talent last year, when she won her title.

Chromat Features Not 1, But 2 Plus-Size Models On Its Runway

We demanded diversity, and Chromat delivered.

The architecturally inspired brand, which describes its clothing as "structural experiments for the human body," debuted its Spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection Friday night, featuring two curvy models, Sabina Karlsson and Denise Bidot, in the mix.

The models' appearances come in the middle of New York Fashion Week and amid The Huffington Post's #NYFW4ALL initiative, which aims to promote and highlight diverse designers, models and runway shows alike.

Chromat's designer Becca McCharen has featured Bidot on her runway before, and has made her position on contributing to a more diverse industry crystal clear. As she told Fashionista in September 2014, "I’m so against all white, straight, skinny girl runways. That just doesn’t reflect my reality and who I am and who the Chromat woman is."

Here's hoping for many more awesome moments like this one to come during Fashion Week and beyond.

Jennifer Garner Makes First Public Appearance Since Ben Affleck Split

Newly single Jennifer Garner stepped back into the spotlight for a good cause in Santa Monica Friday night. The actress was one of the many A-listers who turned out for Think It Up, a telethon put on by the Entertainment Industry Foundation to raise funds for educational projects in public schools.

Clad in a casual tee and skinny jeans, Garner smiled for photos with Jessica Biel, Justin Bieber and Gwyneth Paltrow:

At first, Garner and Paltrow may seem like an unlikely pair -- considering they both dated Ben Affleck -- but Paltrow had nothing but kind words for Garner and her then-husband Affleck in a Howard Stern interview earlier this year.

"I like [Affleck], I'm friends with him still. He settled down and his wife is awesome. Not only is she beautiful, but she's so warm and she cooks and is so into her kids -- she's really great and she's hilarious," Paltrow said. "I had a girls' dinner before the summer and she came over, she's my neighbor. I really like her a lot."

Garner and Affleck announced their split in late June after 10 years of marriage. Together they have three children: Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3.
