True beauty lets you fly. True beauty grounds you in gratitude. It grounds you, crowns you and abounds in youth. It's vibrant from the roots up so you may thrive. Swapping conventional personal care products for clean treats is one of the easiest and simplest ways to boost your rrrradiance, enhance your performance and massively increase your magnetism. Beauty that's divine, naturally.

Gratitude Beauty is one of my favorite tools to help guide you toward optimal wellbeing. If you missed Part 1 of Gratitude Beauty, it's right here. Think of it as your roadmap to healthy, honest personal care items. In many cases, I've had the pleasure of chatting directly with the founders/creators of the treasures below. They've shared their visions and principles with me, their dreams and reasons, their commitment and passion. It's my intention to pass this wealth of beauty on to you so you may make the most educated decisions on which products would suit your needs & desires best. All of the items in Gratitude Beauty are all-natural, high-vibe, completely/mostly organic or wildcrafted, vegan/beegan and cruelty-free (the red carmine pigment in some color cosmetics would not qualify as vegan). I also adore when manufacturers extend their love of nature into eco-conscious packaging that's even more gorgeous than that of top-tier fashion houses. Win-win-win.

I hope you enjoy this two-part series of Gratitude Beauty! It's a wonderful blend of skin care, body care, color cosmetics, superfoods, oral care and artisan perfume. Join the hot circle of mindful makers & conscious shakers. Now dive in, delight and discover!

Housekeeping: I have not been compensated to write about these products. I've picked them myself because I want to highlight clean, good-for-you options. They'll make you look and feel even more fabulous than high-end, conventional brands. Green beauty is my passion and as Chief Truffle Pig Curator I like to share what's awesome.

~

Living Libations: Living Libations is one of the most magical companies I've ever encountered. Their products are absolutely superb, pure and potent. I've had the pleasure of interviewing Chief Concoction Officer Nadine Artemis for Gratitude Speaks; check it out here. Where to start? Her Best Skin Ever oils are a must. Lavish Abundance captures summer in a bottle. Divine all the time but especially when it's cold & dreary out. Truly a mood booster that happens to feed your skin exquisitely (your body will soak it right up). The All Season Serum delivers nutrition deep into your cells so that your skin beams with hydration, plumpness and gratitude. Love the brown glass bottle and dropper it comes in. I feel comfortable recommending this one to everyone because it's so adaptogenic. It delivers whatever your skin needs. It's the maca of facial oils. Hooray Hand Cream is aptly named and such a treat! Its fresh, uplifting scent indicates the bright nature of nourishment your hands are about to receive. Talk about giving grace and gratitude. Applying this cream can become a mini moving meditation. Massage your message. The truffle pig in me did somersaults when I got to experience two new fragrances (new to me, at least): Lei Lady Lei Garland Perfume transports you right to Hawaii. Tuberose, jasmine, carnation, ylang, golden champa and royal Hawaiian sandalwood create an authentic, honest and ultra luscious symphony for the senses. Highly recommend. The other fabulous fragrance, Firelily, merges the elements of earth and fire like I've never smelled before. It's got zest, it's got zing; like benign fireworks, it explodes into serene, bold sparkle. Notes of neroli, bergamot, vanilla bean, cape chamomile and mandarin petigrain will transform your everyday into extravagant. Alive in glee. This is what summer sunshine smells like. Je t'adore, Firelily. All wildcrafted/organic. Made with love in Canada. Cruelty-free. Exceptional quality.

Fitglow Beauty: If you think natural beauty products don't work and you can't seem to let go of the editorial lure of stuff from, say, mars, channel or bigmac, try Fitglow Beauty. Color pay off and performance are sweeter than that of conventional brands and the sleek packaging doesn't scream granola. Issues with red, stressed skin? First, lay off the chemicals and get out in nature. Second, take the Redness Rescue Cream for a spin. For happy skin so glowing your fashionable friends will ask what you're doing, prime with the Bliss Oil. Finish off with their superb Good Gloss or Lipstick for a modern, plump pout. Put your research goggles on and do the 30-day #greenbeauty challenge. You'll thank me later. This goodness is made in Canada, cruelty-free and non-toxic.

PiperWai: When charcoal is better than diamonds...Whether triple digits are approaching in your part of the hemisphere, whether you're doing crossfit like a mad hedgehog, or you're a fast walker, or you just want to smell lovely all the time -- a superhero deo is your best friend. I've been test-driving this gem and I'm loving the idea of using activated charcoal to keep things fresh & happy in the pits. Of course it's all natural. If you're still using one of those chemical catastrophes to stay presentable, let this be your sign to ditch it. There are beautiful natural, healthy options available these days and PiperWai can be the diamond for your pits. The subtle scent is delightful and fresh thanks to a proprietary blend of 11 essential oils. 100% natural. Eco-friendly glass jar.

Nudus: I've always admired the outdoorsy ease and simple sensuality of Australian women (but then again I might be totally off on that, haven't been to Oz yet). Anyway, if my theory is right, it's only natural that a sweet brand from Down Under would create natural lipstick so chic you may or may not want to wear it with a ton of clothes. Introducing: Nudus. Yes, it's all in the name. 27 active natural ingredients; certified COSMOS #organic; chemical-free; Ayurvedic colors from flowers, fruit, herbs and minerals; cruelty-free; handcrafted; small batch; made in Sydney, Australia. Highly pigmented, healthy lip love. Guess it's called Lip Euphoria for a reason. And the subtle scent is divine; reminds me of strawberry-caramel parfait but that might just be the truffle pig in me. Go sniff for yourself.

Elaa: Nothin' funner than playing with new gems. It's like getting a box of pralines that's so beautifully curated that you enjoy every single one. Yeah, you don't find those everywhere but that's what beloved truffle pigs are for. My pleasure! Happy to introduce you to Elaa Skin Care. Elaa means 'to be alive' in Finnish and the line is just that: organic, active, raw, cruelty-free, vegan/beegan, handmade, small batch, made in Oregon. The Superfood Dream Cream not only sounds heavenly, it'll do exactly what its name suggests: Feed. Your. Skin. Deeply. I'm also a huge fan of the body oils! The Chocolate Rose Plum Restoring Body Oil is so delicious you'll keep smelling yourself. And it's divine for the upcoming cooler/cold months. Such is the Pear Restoring Body Oil. Yum. Get ready for compliments galore! If you're still using conventional toothpaste, do yourself a big favor and switch to all natural. Elaa offers wonderful options such as the Double Mint Probiotic Toothpaste and the Fresh Breeze Ozonated Oral Care Gel. Try it. You'll want to smile more, which strengthens your immune system, which keeps you healthy. Virtuous cycle.

Kjaer Weis: Kirsten's long-awaited bronzer embodies la bellezza. Aptly named Dazzling, this certified organic, gilded-amber crème made in Italy beams your glow into a whole new galaxy. And Dazzling wouldn't be dazzling if it wasn't both a bronzer and a contour. Sport that warm glow, caress your contours, elevate your presence. Multi-purpose at its chicest. I encourage you to indulge in this most sophisticated texture. It feels like nothing on, and it leaves nothing undone. Dazzling's a decadent mousse au chocolate that's actually awesome for you. And you know a blush is calling your name when it's named after one of your favorite words: Abundance. It's a "plummy taupe with an iridescent finish," as Kirsten describes it, that gives a modern, refined air to the cheeks. The two latest color additions to her line, Happy cream blush (delightfully, jolly raspberry-creme) and Grace eye shadow (nude hemp-mocha-latte) serve as the perfect bouncing-off place for a cheerful, polished look. Particularly needed in corporate settings. May we all be nourished by abundance so that we move forward with grace, happily sharing our gifts, dazzling with joy! Keep beauty flowing: eco-friendly refills available! NOT tested on animals. Gluten-free. Certified organic. Made in Italy.

Leaves of Trees: Winter, spring, summer or faaaaall, all you have to do is... wear a deo that works for ya. I'm always looking for healthy deodorants because one formula doesn't work for everyone. It depends on your body chemistry, your hormones, what fabrics you're wearing. It's worth the search, though, as you want to make absolutely sure that your stink protection is clean, pure and all natural. At Leaves of Trees, apothecary style meets modern formula that doesn't leave those streaks if you happen to jump into your tee too quicklyyyy. The built-in AC of the Eucalyptus-Mint combo is enjoyable; makes the pits particularly pleasurable. Vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic, of course.

Tata Harper: Tata's luxurious Smoothing Body Scrub brings together the best of both worlds as it merges spa-strength experience with at-home convenience. It's got a glorious blend of exquisite exfoliants (and they're biodegradable, all 5 of them): pink Himalayan salt, Hawaiian sea salt, cranberry fibers, apricot seed powder and organic sugar. What does that mean for you? Micro-polished skin that's hydrated, ultra soft and glowwwwing. Just look at Tata's gorgeous glow, she's truly embodying her philosophy. The Smoothing Body Scrub's scent beams you right into a lush jasmine grove and the heat of increased circulation will turn on your life force. Kundalini. Rising. Housed in Tata's signature green glass and golden lid, as it should be. All natural. Made in Vermont. Cruelty-free.

Four Sigma Foods: Only a healthy body honestly celebrates beauty & wisdom. As someone who's absolutely passionate about health, wellness and good food I'm delighted to have found the portable shrooms by Four Sigma Foods. I'm particularly fond of the instant Reishi and Chaga concoctions that you can instantly brew anywhere (Thank you, Starbucks, for providing clean, hot water and being pretty much omni-present.). At home, I have the time & tools to create my famous superfood hot chocolate but when I'm traveling or running around all day I love having the convenience of FSF's shroom power. The Reishi option, aside from balancing your nervous and immune systems, also satisfies your sweet tooth because of the kiss of stevia mixed in. I'm also a huge fan of the Chaga option that has a bold flavor for full-on immune prowess. It also passes for black coffee so your conventional colleagues won't know you're shrooming if you're not telling ;) The Mushroom Hot Cacao is a fantastic idea, and I'm hoping to see an unsweetened (or at least sugar free) option soon. Medicinal mushrooms made modern. Stash some in your purse or laptop bag. Would also make nice stocking stuffers. FSF's latest addition to the superfood family, the Beauty Blend, makes whipping up your wonder woman smoothie or acai bowl uber easy & convenient. Packed with cell-nourishing anti-oxidants acerola and schizandra, liver-loving milk thistle and aura-protecting astragalus, this potion in a packet will unleash your inner glamazon. Also great for super men, just sayin'.

We're about to make your life a lot easier. Instead of spending hours stressing over your Halloween costume this year, why don't you just go as Donald Trump? You know you were already thinking about it anyway. All you need is a suit, a wig and a little bravado, and you'll be set. Just think, you can spend the night talking about the big global warming hoax and how you plan to make America great again.

This obviously isn't the most original costume idea, so if you want to score a wig before they sell out, you'd better move fast. Behold, six Trump wigs to make your October 31 a little more politically incorrect.

Inside the Whimsical World of Twin Cities Fashion Designer, Samantha Rei

"Fashion is telling a story. You put on an outfit and it's the thing that makes you feel the most comfortable...it's equal parts armor and a chapter to a story.

Fashion is about expression. Clothing is about not getting arrested for indecent exposure." ~Samantha Rei

Samantha Rei Crossland is someone you'll never forget after you meet her. She is a colorful burst of energy contrasted against the greyscale landscape of the mundane world. This Twin Cities based fashion designer and artist is the poster child for the vibrant, innovative and growing fashion scene in Minnesota. Samantha, known for her impeccable sense of style and "cartoon" rainbow-colored locks, became a notable figure in the fashion scene due to her distinctly fanciful approach to her work. All of her designs are bold, smart and wearable, yet maintain a high level of functionality that makes her work a gem in the world of modern fashion.

She has been influenced by a range of inspirations, from the opulent designs of Alexander McQueen, to the demurely soft and feminine designs of Kate Spade--which explains why her unconventional style encompasses so many contrasting elements that blend together harmoniously. Fifteen years after she first came into the fashion world, Samantha is still one of the Twin Cities most beloved designers. In 2014, she was chosen by City Pages as "Artist of the Year" in the category of fashion. Most recently, she earned the title of author with the release of her new book Steampunk & Cosplay Fashion Design & Illustration, published by Walter Foster Publishing in September of 2015. Even though Samantha is not a Steampunk designer, her versatility as an illustrator and fashion expert shines throughout the book's composition. The content is not just limited to Steampunk; it incorporates several different genres of cosplay fashion.

I wanted to catch up with Samantha for an interview so I could ask what is the secret to her longevity as an alternative fashion designer. I first got the pleasure of meeting Samantha when she was a participant in the largest bi-annual teen art exhibition in the state of Minnesota called "Hot Art Injection (May Cause Side Effects)" in 1999, in conjunction with the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council. She was one of the few artists selected out of hundreds of submissions, which means even as a teen she was one of the top artists among her peers. I was one of the twelve teen curators who put this massive show together. Ironically, 16 years later, we are sitting across from each other at The Happy Gnome (one of St. Paul's trendiest restaurants and bars) working together again, but this time with me as a freelance writer and her a leading indie fashion designer.

Samantha's journey to being one of the most prominent designers in Minnesota had very humble beginnings. When she was young, she wanted to be a children's book illustrator but over time her interests expanded into several different realms. Her father introduced her and her siblings to comic books when she was 12 or 13 and she became a huge "comic nerd". She would watch Saturday morning cartoons and then would watch the fashion programs that would come on afterward. She thought to herself, "I could do this." She merged her love of comics and fashion when she began to trace her comic characters and used them as her first croquis (before she even knew what one was).
Samantha's mother had always been extremely proud and supportive of her art, but only passively tried to teach her how to sew because she thought that she might lose interest. Crossland began hand-sewing clothing for her dolls but she didn't take up a strong interest in learning to use a machine until she was a teen. She recounted a nostalgic memory of her first sewing machine:

"I finally pestered my mother into teaching me how do sew. She begrudgingly did it. I think when I was about 14 or 15, she got a sewing machine from a co-worker. It was a crappy avocado green [colored] sewing machine from the 70's that could only stitch a straight line and a zigzag. And the zigzag was broken!"

She grew up in Hastings, MN and was one of seven Black kids in her town and looked at fashion as a way of expressing herself and overcoming the bullying she received because she was biracial:

"For the most part, it was terrible. It got to the point where I just didn't care. If they're going to make fun of me, it should be for something I can help, which is my clothes...rather than something I can't. Which was [the color of] my skin."

Samantha says that she surrounded herself with a group of really good friends that helped her through those hard times. She took those negative experiences with bullying and transformed them into positive expressions through clothing that pushed the envelope aesthetically. She went to Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, Minnesota in 1998 and after graduation she spent some time learning illustration at the College of Visual Arts (CoVA) in St. Paul. She continued her studies at Minneapolis Community and Technical College for Apparel Technologies. She made a name for herself through her amazing work in the world of Lolita fashion with her former fashion line "Blasphemina's Closet", which she opened in 2000. By 2013, Samantha had evolved and wanted her clothing line to reflect that personal evolution. Exclusively designing Lolita clothing was getting old for her and she felt restricted by all of the rules. In 2013, she relaunched her brand under the name "Samantha Rei" with the same free-spirited and feminine feel, but a little softer and more versatile. She still loves Lolita and incorporates many of the same elements in her new clothing line, but she felt her artistry needed space to grow. The transition has been an immense success and has made her clothing accessible to people who aren't immersed in the Lolita culture.

Even though her designs are ornate, they should not be mistaken as costumes and Samantha should not be mistaken for a costumer (although she makes spectacular costumes for friends and herself when she does cosplay as a hobby). She is a high-end fashion designer of clothes with a very distinct, whimsical aesthetic that are meant to stand out due to their originality. Samantha says that the difference between fashion and costuming is that a costume is meant for you to dress up as someone or something else, whereas fashion is meant to celebrate you being the truest version of yourself. Her clothes are fancy bits of wearable art that helps the wearer tell a story about themselves. Every single garment is created through detailed hand-drawn sketches, custom patterns, and is handsewn by Samantha Rei herself. Due to the effort put into creating her clothing, her brand is some of the highest quality fashion that you can find.

Samantha also believes that her fashion line gives women a choice. Modesty is one of the values she incorporates into her clothing so that women can be fashionable without having to show everything if they don't want to. She believes that women can be totally covered or wear nothing at all, and they shouldn't be shamed for their choices. Crossland says:

"That's one of my business values. If you want to be modest in your clothes, you can do so and still be fashionable...you can be sensual without being overly sexual. I think that you can be proud of your body and show things off without having to resort to showing everything. It's about having options. I feel like a lot of teenage girls are taught that in order to be popular, they have to show their bodies. They should have the choice about whether or not they want to and if they do they shouldn't be made to feel bad. And if they don't, they shouldn't be made to feel like they are not worthy of friendship, popularity, or love."

As the Twin Cities approaches Fashion Week, we all are anticipating what the mind of Samantha Rei will produce next. She will be debuting her Spring/Summer 2016 collection at TIM+THOM presents LARK on September 25th, in Minneapolis. Her career in art and fashion has been the public evolution of an artist who fearlessly explores what it means to be creative, honest, and authentic. Life is filled with many wonderful characters. In my life, Samantha has been one of the most interesting ones. She reminds the world that beauty and art can be so many different things, which makes her not only a breath of fresh air, but truly unforgettable.

"Steampunk & Cosplay Fashion Design & Illustration" is now available at booksellers including Barnes and Noble Booksellers, Michaels, and Amazon. To learn more about Samantha Rei, follow her on Instagram @samanthareiofficial, on Facebook, or check her website at www.SamanthaRei.com for updates.

Grey Adds a Fantastic Neutral Look to Your Underwear Drawer

0

Now that it's heading into the Fall season, you can start breaking out the black underwear more; but the good news is, grey underwear still works for Autumn!

Blackspade and Bread & Boxers have refined looks and styles for your underwear drawer. Bread & Boxers' Grey Boxer Brief has a grey melange material that is perfect for this season - it's breathable, so it keeps you cool when you need it and warm when you want to be. It also adds a nice textured look. The look is simple and lacking in any of Bread & Boxers usual bold text. Blackspade's Tender Cotton Shorty in Stone is similar to Bread & Boxers' boxer brief, with the brand name off the left hip.

Björn Borg and papi both have a more "new age grey" as opposed to a neutral; by that, we mean that the look is definitely contemporary, and that makes it a standout. With trendy houndstooth, a metallic waistband, and geometric prints, these two brands know exactly what their customers are looking for in modern underwear.

Shrine Boxers is similar with their Boxer in Blue/Gray; this is one of the darkest shades of grey featured, even though it doesn't look like it.

The Marek + Richard Core Long Tank and Blackspade's Mood V-Neck are also modeled in this photoshoot. We utilized a grey tank to build a look.

How do you like your underwear - neutral and bright? Or more classic? Sound off and let us know!

Selena Gomez’s High-Cut Swimsuit Reveals Some New Ink

Selena Gomez took a dip in the ocean in Miami Friday, flashing some new ink on her upper thigh.

The 23-year-old was photographed in the water wearing a high-cut black swimsuit that revealed a possible tattoo on her left thigh. The mark is apparently the "om" symbol, which is said to clear the mind of  thoughts and distractions.

Whether or not it's permanent is unclear.

It's always right when you're about to run out the door that you notice it: a big, fat smear of white deodorant across the front of your cute new LBD. But don't change outfits just yet--we found the easiest and speediest way to remove the stain.

What you need: A leftover dry-cleaning hanger (you know, the one that comes with the squishy foam over the top).

What to do: Remove the foam piece and use that to gently rub the mark until has disappeared.

Then what? That's it. The stain is gone--in a matter of 15 seconds.

Kevin Hart Does His Best David Beckham Impression For H&M

0

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right Kevin Hart

David Beckham and Hart were spotted together in NYC back in July, wearing a slew of matching outfits in what was rumored to be a new H&M campaign. Those rumors were confirmed Tuesday morning when the brand released a trailer for its "Modern Essentials" ad, starring the two charming guys.

The LOL-worthy clips feature Hart moving into Beckham's house, attempting (and failing) an ice bath and even taking a stab at that dreamy accent. Hart is admittedly more enthusiastic about the odd coupling, as Beckham asks, "How long are you staying?"

Of course, the one-sided relationship is strictly for on-camera purposes. In a release from the brand, Beckham called Hart "one of the funniest, smartest guys around." Hart, on the other hand, explained why starring in a campaign with the athlete was extra exciting.

"To be able to make fun of a global icon like David Beckham is a comedian’s dream. I love fashion as much as I love sports, which is why I was so excited to star in David’s new H&M campaign," he said.

If the trailer is any indication of what's to come Sept. 28, we can't wait to see it.

Here's What Wednesday From 'The Addams Family' Would Look Like Now

If you've ever wondered what Wednesday Addams from the 1991 "Addams Family" film would look like all grown up, a user on Tumblr has used Photoshop to solve that question.

Apparently, she'd look just like her mother, Morticia.

The Tumblr user, thecreaturesenchantment, used an old promotional photo of Anjelica Huston to create the Morticia-inspired look.

Here's the new photo paired with the original.

Seems like a reboot would be very revealing.

Lea Michele looked nothing short of stunning at the Monday night premiere of her new series, "Scream Queens."

Clad in a black cutout dress, the 29-year-old looked a far cry from her nerdy character, Hester Ulrich, who is not-so-lovingly referred to as "Neckbrace" by the sorority sisters of Kappa Kappa Tau.

The former "Glee" star wasn't the only cast member to shine at the the Los Angeles premiere, as co-stars Emma Roberts, Skyler Samuels, Keke Palmer and Abigail Breslin also heated up the red carpet.

Jessica Alba Keeps Summer Going In A Bikini For Self Magazine

It might be fall, but summer continues on the cover of Self magazine with Jessica Alba in a bikini.

Alba appears in the October 2015 issue of Self in a beach-themed photo shoot and discusses the journey to creating a billion-dollar company after years as an actress.

“I’ve always been business-minded,” the Honest Company co-founder said. “I approached Hollywood like a business … I’ve been building my own personal brand over time.”

The journey was not always an easy one. “For a long time, I didn’t think I was smart," Alba explained. "I felt like an imposter. It’s not until you feel whole in yourself that you fit in anywhere. And it took me becoming a mom to actually feel that way.”

Carrie Underwood Sizzles In Tiny Shorts At Apple Music Festival

Carrie Underwood turned up the heat on Monday as she performed at the Roundhouse in northwest London for the Apple Music Festival.

The superstar country singer sizzled as she sang, looking like a total knockout in a black sleeveless shirt and tiny black lace shorts.

Earlier this month, the former "American Idol" winner spoke to Taste of Country about the festival, calling it a "such a thrill" to play in the U.K.

"I’m really looking forward to heading back and being a part of such an amazing lineup at this year’s Apple Music Festival," the 32-year-old told the website. "What a unique concert experience, not only for the fans at the Roundhouse, but also for fans across the globe who can stream it live!”

It's been a busy year for Underwood, who became a first-time mom in February and has since released her first music video since giving birth. The singer looked like a total smoke show in the video for "Smoke Break," which is off of her upcoming album "Storyteller."

Princess Eugenie Is Red Hot On A Night Out With Cara Delevingne

Princess Eugenie just made London Fashion Week look royally fun.

Queen Elizabeth II's sixth grandchild looked better than ever Monday night in a chic ensemble and what appears to be a new shade of perfectly coiffed, deep red locks.

She looked much more London elite than New York hipster, which we've come to know her as in recent years.

The princess was seen out with friend (and pseudo royal) Cara Delevingne at a party for LOVE Magazine. Delevingne made her LFW debut earlier in the day, when she sat front row at Burberry alongside Kate Moss and St. Vincent.

The friends, who were also joined by actress Clara Paget, looked like they had a great time. We can't wait to see if Eugenie makes any more fashionable appearances this week.

10 Ways To Feel Like A Local In Los Angeles

0
0

The city of Los Angeles is home to 3.8 million people. It boasts a booming food scene, beautiful beaches and the heart and soul of Hollywood. Tourists pack themselves into open air vans daily and are driven around the city, soaking up the history and culture. But living like a true local in L.A. requires skipping all of the well-known destinations. Here are 10 lesser-known spots that we can't believe we're telling you about.

1. Massage You Haven't Heard Of: Aurora Foot Spa

Don't expect a fancy spa setting here with cucumber water or flickering candles. This Chinese massage parlor tucked away in a strip mall on the border of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills features rows of big reclining chairs where you get a full body massage -- but with all of your clothes on. Strange right? Other customers sit to your left and your right but within minutes, you will be in a totally different zone. Your tab of $35 for an hour-long massage possibly makes it the best deal in town. Bonus: they're open until 10 p.m. 8324 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90211.

2. Fancy Happy Hour We Had To See To Believe: Cecconi's

Not only were we shocked to recently discover that Cecconi's has happy hour, but we were downright thrilled when we found out that it occurs during 4-7 p.m., even on Saturdays. Sipping a refreshing vodka cucumber cocktail and digging into fresh burrata at 5 p.m. on a Friday just made us complete. Plus, apps, beer, wine and cocktails are under $10.Angelenos frequent this West Hollywood hotspot for its gorgeous decor, fancy Italian food and good people watching. 8764 Melrose Ave, West Hollywood, CA 90069.

3. Secret Breakfast Burrito: Nina's Mexican Food

Just off of Sawtelle Boulevard's bustling Japantown that's packed with ramen-lovers at all hours, Nina has the goods on the best breakfast burrito on the Westside. It's simple with no frills and no rice, the way we like it, and is best when substituted with chorizo. Customer parking next to the store makes the whole experience an A+. 1651 Sawtelle Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025. (Runner-up: Cofax Coffee's secret crunch in their breakfast burrito makes it the best in the Hollywood area.)

4. Coolest Place To Sweat That's Not A Gym: Groov3 Dance Classes

Picture the ease of Zumba (think follow-along dance steps and tons of welcoming energy) mixed with cool, edgy 20-somethings who listen to hip hop. Groov3 classes are offered all over L.A. but creator Benjamin Allen's classes are not to be missed. A live DJ spins incredible hip hop mashups during class and when you leave an hour later, you're energized, dripping in sweat, and feel like you just got home from the club (but you're sober!) Edge Performing Arts Center, 6300 Romaine St, Los Angeles, CA90038.

5. Best No-B.S.-Facial: Jennifer Kramer at Corrective Skincare

Plenty of estheticians and dermatologists see you once, recommend that you invest hundreds of dollars in a brand new skin regimen and even guilt you into extraordinarily expensive in-office treatments. Enter Jennifer Kramer. She is frank, personable and optimistic. Her facials are quick and surprisingly painless. She has common sense skincare tricks (like using ice on your face once a day), and she will also send you home with a sample of a product before ever suggesting you buy anything. 730 Wilshire Blvd #320, Santa Monica, CA 90403and16161 Ventura Blvd #109, Encino, CA 91436.

6. Number One Way To Unplug: Unplug Meditation

Aptly named, Unplug Meditation is the only drop-in meditation studio of its kind in Los Angeles. The studio offers classes for all levels, no experience necessary, morning noon and night every day of the week. Teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and every class is different. Bonus: because founder Suze Yalof Schwartz is a former fashion editor, the little gift shop has some seriously chic gems. 12401 Wilshire Blvd #101, Los Angeles, CA 90025.

7. Loveliest Sit-Down Wine Selection: Wally's Wine in Beverly Hills

Wally's has long been the authority on wines, but it wasn't until the store opened a wine and cheese bar in the heart of Beverly Hills last year that we really fell in love. The beautiful little tables inside and outdoors on the patio are garnished with vases of fresh lavender, and you will be hard-pressed to find a better wine selection on one menu in L.A. A perfect place to meet for a drink and grab a bite. 447 N Canon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.

 8. Best Local Beach: Topanga State Beach

Yes, Zuma Beach in Malibu is beautiful. But our favorite hideaway for swimming, lounging and oogling the surfers will always be Topanga State Beach. With the beautiful bluffs of the mountains behind you and the sparkling blue waters ahead, this popular surf destination is the perfect combination of everything L.A. has to offer. Snag a free parking spot on PCH and walk down the wooden steps. Bonus: the hippies' favorite canyon, Topanga Canyon, is just up the hill if you're hankering for a local meal, frozen coconut popsicle or aloe vera juice. Address: where Topanga Canyon meets the Pacific Coast Highway.

9. Classic Frozen Yogurt: The Bigg Chill

Forget all the fancy gelato and small-batch ice cream parlors that have popped up all over L.A. Get back to basics at the cash-only frozen yogurt shop that started it all. Flavors change every week but customer favorites like peanut butter are always on the menu. Carb-free and dairy-free options also available. The line is almost always out the door and the parking lot is horrifying, but it has been worth the wait for 20 years now. 10850 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064.

10. Best Movie Theater: iPic

Until recently, our movie theater list would have been much longer. Many L.A. theaters are brand new, have fancy treats and even offer dine-in eating experiences. But the iPic, despite its hefty ticket price, is now the only place we can go for some peace and quiet -- free of phones and talking -- and enjoy a movie like respectable human beings. 10840 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

Can We Talk About The Fact That This Is Snooki?

The year was 2009, I had just moved to New York City, and it seemed that everyone was talking about this new television show on MTV: Jersey Shore. Having grown up in the Midwest and gone to school in California, the kind of person the Jersey Shore cast represented was totally, completely, 100% foreign to me. Who were these magical people who made sure that even the most mundane tasks they did -- laundry? --was something to be excited about and stoked on? Who was this tribe of people for whom gender roles were so fixed, but still different from the norm -- where women were as open about their sexuality as the men, and the fellas were as obsessed with their eyebrows as the ladies? But, most important, who was this Snooki? This person who dressed like a cross between all the members of the Spice Girls, Keith Urban, and Tila Tequila? It was outrageous, it was weird, and it was unique. How many other reality-show stars can say that they coined both a hairstyle and a shoe trend?

Fast-forward to 2015. Flipping through an issue of WWD one day, I came across an ad for the trade show Magic's 20th anniversary. Fronting the campaign was a chic redheaded model wearing a tropical-print dress and lace-up heels. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw who it was: "Lovanna by Nicole Polizzi," it read. "Meet Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi at Booth #72801."

When I spoke to Polizzi later that week, she expressed a similar sentiment: "People who actually get stuff done in the fashion world are in [WWD], so the fact that they put me in there was literally a dream come true." For the past few years, Snooki has undergone a transformation in many ways -- she's retired her "Snooki bump," she's launched a successful line of businesses, she's the mother of two children, and she's gotten married (she stood by her husband, Jionni, after it was revealed that his email was tied to an Ashley Madison account). Her clothing choices have changed, too -- but it's not because she's over that Jersey Shore look and regrets ever wearing it. "I definitely love tight dresses and leopard print, still," she says. "But after settling down with Jionni, having children, and growing up as a person, I realized that I wanted to grow up with my style, too. I still have fun with my outfits, but there's a limit. But you can't live for other people. You can't be like, 'I'm going to wake up today and please as many people as possible.' You have to please yourself and do what's right. Screw what other people think."

There are many celebrities who have made their way from the media's "worst-dressed lists" to the top of the "best-dressed," who look upon their pasts with disdain and embarrassment. But not Polizzi. Though she has moved along society's "taste" scale, it's not really because she's bending to pressures to conform. The recent press she's gotten has, frankly, come as a surprise: "I've never really had a positive relationship with the fashion industry. It's always, 'Worst dressed,' 'What is she wearing,' blah, blah, blah.... I feel like ever since these past couple years that I've grown up, everything is becoming so positive. I don't know how to react, because I'm so used to people being negative."

Introducing some pieces of Lovanna

Lovanna is Polizzi's third fashion label (she has Snooki Love, which stocks more casual clothes, and SLNP -- Snooki Love Nicole Polizzi -- which is about club wear). Lovanna's styles will skew more sophisticated and elegant, and will be a littler pricier, which is important to Polizzi. "I've always been a bargain shopper. Even when I started making money from TV, I didn't change. I did buy my first Louis Vuitton bag, and that was cool, but I still shopped at Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. Everyone wants to be the most expensive designer, but not me."

Tyra Banks Brings Tears To Teen Designer's Eyes With This Heartwarming Surprise

Do you remember Kyemah McEntyre -- the East Orange, New Jersey teen whose photo in a prom dress she designed to pay homage to her African heritage "broke the internet" and also earned her the prom queen title at her high school?

Since then, she's been busy designing more gorgeous gowns and even made a dress for former supermodel and talk show host Tyra Banks.

Banks said she saw McEntyre's gown on Instagram and was impressed when she found out McEntyre designed the dress herself, so she decided to invite her to rock the gown on her talk show "FABLife."

"The moment I saw Kyemah in her prom dress, I was blown away," Banks said on the show. "The bold design, the pattern, the power that this young woman displayed was awe-inspiring."

"I was trying to show society that it's OK to be yourself and I say that over and over again because I think it's really important that we let people know that you don't need someone else to define your identity," the 18-year-old said on the show. "This was a representation of me and where I come from, which is Africa."

McEntyre, who is now a freshman at Parsons School of Design in New York, thought that she was invited on the show to hand deliver the Nkrumah’s pencil print-dress she made for Banks as a surprise.

Banks turned the tables on the young designer and surprised her, by coming onstage with the dress already on along with a plush afro to match.

"I am such a fan of you," Banks told the teary-eyed teen. "I saw you on the Internet and you blew me away with your talent, with your beauty... this is the beginning of your journey and becoming the force that I know that you can be in the fashion world. This is not existing in the fashion world right now, and it is desperately, desperately needed.”

This wasn't the first dress McEntyre designed for a celeb, either. Earlier this summer, she designed a dress for Naturi Naughton, star of the hit Starz drama "Power."

Why You Need to Strive for Indifference Toward Your Ex

0
0
I often had trouble sleeping while my nearly 30-year marriage was falling apart, so I would Google various self-help topics on my iPhone while lying awake late at night. Occasionally, I'd come across a factoid or bit of advice that would truly resonate. Here's one: "The opposite of love is not hate; it is indifference."

Pow! That one hit me right between the eyes. I had loved my husband for a very long time -- over half my life. Because of the deep hurt I experienced when the marriage ended, it was easy to transform my intense feelings of love and care into their evil twin counterparts, hate and anger. When I read this statement about indifference I suddenly understood that love and hate are actually two sides of the same coin, and that neither one would help me recover from the harsh reality of my broken marriage. In fact, my strong feelings for my husband, both positive and negative, were keeping me tied to him. The more I stalked his activities on Facebook or via credit card charges, the less I would be able to heal and move forward with my life.

I vowed that indifference would be my goal. (No surprise: This is easier said than done).

Here are four ways you can work toward indifference so you can get on with your life:

  1. Shift the focus to yourself. The dictionary definition of indifference is "a lack of interest or concern about something." When you're married, the norm is the opposite of indifference. You're interested in absolutely everything about your spouse, from dinner-time discussions of "How was your day?" to his/her latest accomplishments at the gym, ongoing health issues and books or news items of mutual interest. Because this ongoing concern occupies a huge amount of your psychic real estate, achieving indifference requires a radical change in your outlook. You have to stop worrying about the minutia of your spouse's life and shift that concern to yourself. Think about ways you can improve your career, your fitness level, your social life. Make plans and use your network to help you achieve your new goals. This may sound selfish, but after spending so many years as a "we," it's perfectly acceptable (and necessary) to concentrate on defining your "me." Just remember that focusing on yourself doesn't preclude being a good citizen, friend and colleague. Use Rabbi Hillel's wise words as your guide: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I?"

  2. Take responsibility for your own happiness. The difference between being happy and being miserable has more to do with how you react to life's challenges than on the specific challenges that come your way. In his book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra breaks it down for us:

When you feel frustrated or upset by a person or a situation, remember that you are not reacting to the person or the situation, but to your feelings about the person or the situation. These are your feelings, and your feelings are not someone else's fault.

Once you recognize that you (not your ex-spouse or anyone else) are responsible for your feelings, you will become empowered. You will take control of your life. And you will stop spending so much of your precious time and energy thinking about what your ex is up to.

  3. Let go of your anger. During divorce, anger toward your spouse is normal, natural, and -- to a point -- useful. It is, after all, one of Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief. But because anger is an intense emotion, it is antithetical to your goal of indifference toward your ex. So at some point, you'll have to just let it go. If you continue to seethe about the hurts you suffered during your marriage and divorce, you'll remain forever tethered to your ex and to the past. This ongoing backward focus will prevent you from embracing opportunities for future happiness. Australian nurse Elizabeth Kenney wrote: "He who angers you conquers you." If you want the freedom that indifference brings, you must first break free from anger's oppressive yoke. Only then can you reclaim power over your life.

  4. Redirect your passion. Remember: your goal is indifference toward your ex -- not the world. Take the intense feelings and passion you once felt for your spouse and transfer them to something you find meaningful and exciting. Pursue a hobby or sport you've always wanted to try. Sign up for a pottery or language class. Take that bucket list vacation. Give back to the community. Become a mentor at work. The list is endless. Go for it, whatever it is. In Nelson Mandela's words: "There is no passion to be found in playing small, in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

Remember, indifference is a goal. You won't achieve it overnight, especially if you were married for a long time. If you're reading this while lying awake late at night, here's one more useful tidbit: Whenever you find yourself thinking about your ex, think about the lyrics to Gotye's catchy pop ballad: "Now and then I think of when we were together...Now you're just somebody that I used to know."
