Jidenna Takes ‘Classic Man’ To A New Level In West African-Inspired Photoshoot

$

Jidenna is nothing short of royalty in his latest photoshoot.

The "Classic Man" teamed up with All Things Ankara -- a style site that highlights West African ankara print fashions -- to promote "Nigerian Renaissance," the website's Nigerian Independence Ball. The photos from the shoot are breathtaking.

Jidenna will serve as the ball's co-ambassador, taking place Oct. 17 in Maryland, along with philanthropist and model Jessica Chibueze. The clothes were designed by the website's founder Nikki Billie Jean who, along with others, made the designs to reflect a mix of their African heritage and the French Renaissance. Jidenna, Chibueze and a few models flaunt their vibrant West African attire in front of a backdrop fit for 16th century royal monarchs.

Earlier this year, Jidenna, whose father is from Nigeria, received backlash for making comments about his negative experiences in Nigeria due to his fair skin. He responded with an open letter expressing his cultural pride:

There is no question that Africa is playing a pivotal role in the future of our planet and that Nigeria, with it’s booming economy and burgeoning middle class, is a driving force. I will continue to play my role in the Renaissance taking place in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Jidenna's pride is certainly evident in this spread and if the photos don't convince you, the video will. Watch below.

8 Things You're Doing Wrong to Your Curls

Co-authored by Elena Nicolau, writing intern at Avelist

2015-09-27-1443385068-7226504-10694458_10152433482168246_5808827762550476473_o.jpg

My school yearbook photos show the evolution of a girl learning to harness her crazy curls. After years of donning a pyramid of frizz, I learned some basic tips and turned that mess into something quite unique and beautiful. Curly-haired girls have to share the love -- and tips -- of dealing with our hair. Because, as you all know, our lives revolve around our hair. Here are some basic pointers for pitfalls that curly girls experience, in a world where most hair advice is for pin-straight and beachy wave-heads.

1) Put that brush down! Each time you run a brush through your hair, you destroy the curls. Instead of having natural, cascading locks, you will go through the day with a halo of frizz. Up to you. To detangle, lop on a ton of conditioner in the shower and run your fingers through your hair. Same idea as a brush, but it will preserve your curls' shape.

2) Throw out that crunchy, flaky gel! Limit the amount of alcohol your hair products contain. To have soft, moisturized curls, don't leave the shower without leave-in conditioner, and keep trying new products until you find the ones that work best for you. Everyone has their own product cocktail they swear by, but I've had a lot of luck with AG Recoil Curl Activator and Leave-in Conditioner, and Curlisto products.

3) Don't go to any old hairdresser. Believe it or not, there are people who make a living out of cutting curly hair. We're that special. It's worth going to see someone who's going to treat your hair with expertise and compassion.

4) Limit your shampoo! Shampoo dries out the hair. When you do use it, limit the shampoo to the scalp. Fine hair can be shampooed every other day; thick hair, once a week. But, if the daily shampoo habit is too hard to kick, just make sure you're not using one with sulfates.

5) Don't skimp on the conditioner. Conditioner is the most important starting point for having beautiful curls. Not only should you be conditioning every day, but the longer you leave it on, the better. A good way to maximize conditioning times is to leave on conditioner while you shave and rinse it out after.

6) Who needs a blow dryer, anyway? Curly hair should be air dried or dried using a very gentle diffuser. A harsh blow dryer will only turn your hair into a frizzball.

7) Don't get discouraged! There are lots of tutorials online that can open up creative pathways to new hairstyles and haircare tips. Join the community.

8) The biggest issue, and one that we've all struggled with, comes when you're not embracing your curls. They're beautiful and part of what makes you unique. Go out into the world with a smile, because your hair is beautiful and so are you!

Charlotte Casiraghi, the Ultimate Style Crush

The list of my style-icon-girl-crush is growing. I am lucky to call my grandmother and my godmother style icons. Some of my style icons are fictional characters, such as Claire Underwood or Catherine Banning. And some, unoriginally, are celebrities, including Jackie Kennedy and Lauren Bacall. To this list, I am adding Charlotte Marie Pomeline Casiraghi, daughter of Caroline, Princess of Hanover, Princess of Monaco and the late Stefano Casiraghi, and Italian industrialist -- and the grand-daughter of late Prince Rainier III and the late Princess Grace of Monaco.

2015-09-28-1443453735-5321330-charlotte.JPG
Image via Italian Vogue

She is the global brand ambassador for Montblanc, the face of Gucci Cosmetics and is regularly on the Vanity Fair Best Dressed List, as is the case again this year. Her style is majestic, graceful (no pun intended), athletic and oh so very French.

After getting lost in the "Charlotte Casraghi image internet black hole" for one too many hours, here are my style takeaways.

- Black looks put together, always (as if I needed a reminder of this truism...). All white looks just as graceful.
- Skinny jeans should be a staple if you can pull them off.
- Flats actually can look elegant (although I am not running to the store to buy any).
- A chignon, whether messy or structured, shows off bone structure.
- Short red nails can look fabulous (this I am going to incorporate in my beauty routine).
- Figure out what your best feature is, and flaunt it (in her case, her toned arms and shoulders and her subtly sexy collarbone).
- Smokey eye or a bold lip -- but not both at the same time.

The Difference Between Men's And Women's Halloween Costumes Is Very Scary

$

The only thing truly chilling about Halloween is how little fabric manufacturers use for women's costumes

In the name of Science, we researched popular costume ideas for men and women, and compared them side-by-side. We began to see a theme emerge. Manufacturers assume that ladies are looking to show a lot of skin, while men's costumes offer a lot more coverage (and, thus, warmth).

Women should wear whatever they want, be it on Halloween or any other night of the year. And if that includes hot pants, more power to you! But where are the lycra cut-out costumes for men? Shouldn't Halloween be an equal-opportunity night for bodily display?

Check out these 21 jarring costume comparisons, and head here and here for some more creative Halloween costume ideas.

Ralph Lauren Stepping Down As CEO Of Namesake Company

Ralph Lauren, the designer behind the namesake brand synonymous with classic American style, is stepping down as CEO of the fashion company he launched in 1967.

Stefan Larsson, a former H&M executive who has been the president of Gap-owned Old Navy since 2012, will succeed him in November, the Ralph Lauren Corporation announced Tuesday. He will report to Lauren, who will remain at the company as executive chairman and chief creative officer.

"My job is to think always about the future of our company and how to move it forward," Lauren, 75, said in a press release. "Stefan Larsson is exceptionally talented, and he will bring our company a fresh and exciting global perspective."

Larsson said he was "thrilled" to work with Lauren in this new role.

"His creativity and singular vision have made Ralph Lauren one of the world’s most influential global brands, and I share his dreams for the future," he said.

Lauren's long run as both the business and creative leader of the company was exceptional in the fashion industry, The New York Times noted. Most successful fashion houses rise to prominence on the shoulders of two executives, one on either end of the company.

While Forbes ranks Ralph Lauren in the top 100 most valuable brands, the company's profits fell in the most recent quarter ending in June, when revenue dropped 5.3 percent to $1.62 billion. Shares of the company are down 35 percent so far in 2015.

Here's Why Some Men's Beards Are A Different Color Than Their Hair

$

0

Judging by what's on the Internet, we understand why it might seem like every single guy in the world has either a beard on his face or a bun on his head (we've certainly given our fair share of coverage to this important subject of our time).

So with all this hair flying around, we were reminded of one of life's great mysteries: Why are some guys' beards a different color than the rest of their hair?

We turned to dermatologist Dr. Bobby Buka, founder of Greenwich Village Dermatology in New York, who said it basically comes down to pigments and genetics.

"The difference between red hair and blonde hair or brown hair is different types of melanin," Buka said, referring to the pigment packs that bring color to our hair (without it, our hair is white).

One type of melanin, a very light type called pheomelanin, is responsible for blonde or red hair, and eumelanin is the darker melanin found in darker-toned hair. How it gets distributed through the shaft of each hair and in what combinations is what determins our hair color, and it can vary by each individual follicle.

"The other component that contributes to color is the distribution of the melanin from the base of the hair follicle to the rest of the shaft," Buka said. "That transfer process is genetic, and so redheads have more pheomelanin and their pigment stays at the base of the hair follicle, and black-haired people have more eumelanin and transfers throughout the shaft."

The same goes for each follicle on your head, so those around your jaw and neck might have a different eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio than say, what's on the top of your head.

For what it's worth, our skin has pigments to protect ourselves from ultraviolet rays, but Buka pointed out that our hair doesn't need UV protection. So why is there a biological reason that our hair would have pigments? "I can't see why we would have one," he said.

It seems some mysteries still need to be solved.

An Easy, Fool-Proof Hack To Keep Your Jeans From Ripping

Your grandma may never understand why you would pay money for jeans with holes in them, but the reality is, distressed denim looks downright cool.

The big issue with ripped jeans, however, is that with extended wear, those perfectly sized cut-outs have a way of becoming giant, gaping holes, making it look more like you're wearing shorts with ankle coverings than on-trend pants.

Thanks to a new video from Refinery 29, you can kick, bend and even cartwheel in your distressed denim with ease. Using a hair iron and fusible denim patches, the seams can be easily fortified from the inside, keeping those holes at a manageable size for wears to come.

Check out the video below, and stop jeans from tearin' up your heart for good.

Blake Lively Is Shutting Down Her Website, Isn't Afraid To Say Why

Yes, Blake Lively is shutting down her website, Preserve. No, she is not afraid to be honest about why.

“We have an incredible team of people who do beautiful work, but we launched the site before it was ready, and it never caught up to its original mission: It’s not making a difference in people’s lives, whether superficially or in a meaningful way,” she told Vogue.

The actress launched Preserve, a site meant to blend commerce, storytelling and philanthropic efforts, last year. In her first Letter from the Editor, Lively admitted she is no lifestyle expert ("I'm comfortable with the knowledge that I'm not a teacher, but rather, a student. I don't do any one thing perfectly. I do a lot of things though. Some well, some not-so-well") and that her idea was ambitious ("A pretty lofty goal, a pretty lofty statement, but a group of determined hearts behind it").

She faced criticism from the get-go, and comparisons to Gwyneth Paltrow.  Fast forward a little more than a year, and she's shuttering the effort on October 9 -- for now.

“It’s very exciting and it’s also incredibly scary," Lively told Vogue. “I never thought I would have the bravery to actually do that, to take the site dark and to say, ‘You know what? I haven’t created something that is as true and impactful as I know it can and will be. And I’m not going to continue to chase my tail and continue to put a product out there that we, as a team, are not proud of.’ I know what it’ll look like, what I’m facing publicly, that people are just going to have a heyday with this. But it’s so much worse to continue to put something out there -- to ask my team to put something out there -- that isn’t the best we can do. I’m going to take this hit, and the only way I can prove all the negative reactions wrong is to come back with a plan that will rock people. And I have that plan."

For now, she's playing "Shake It Off" on repeat and getting ready for what's next. Meanwhile, Preserve fans can get 50 percent off.

What The Heck Is ‘Cocktail Attire'? Decoding This And Other Dress Codes For Men

$

Long gone are the days when “jacket required” dining was the norm, and the three-piece suit was the standard uniform of the downtown office. Men’s everyday dress has evolved a lot over the years. The freedom of modern fashion means a lot of rule breaking -- well, until you’re confronted head-on with a dress code requirement, that is. Even those with the surest sense of style might freeze in confusion.

Maybe you receive an invitation for a “black tie optional” wedding in Montauk, New York. “Optional”?! What does that even mean?

When in doubt, wear dark dress socks. We’re teaming up with Dockers to break down various scenarios with explicit dress codes. We’ll tell you what they mean and what’s appropriate to wear to each.

No compromises in quality. Just versatile, essential style. We have taken an enduring, admired brand and made it stronger. Dockers® has embarked on a journey to redefine the way men dress and ignite a focus on head-to-toe style.

Here's What 10 People Look Like With And Without Their Contacts On

$

While it sure would be nice to have perfect vision, some of us need a special visit from the corrective lens fairy. As Cosmopolitan showed us Tuesday, people look very different when they wear glasses and when they don't. But what about when they put contacts on their eyeballs? Here's what 10 people in HuffPost's DC bureau look like wearing their contacts and not -- plus, how they feel about them.

"When I put in my contacts, I feel like I can see." -- Sara

"When I don't wear contacts, I feel scared. That's because I can't see anything, leaving me vulnerable to tripping or accidentally talking to people I dislike." -- Elise

"The biggest thing is I can't see the contacts until I put them in, so I'm really just winging it every time. It's a Catch-22." -- Jeff

"I've been wearing contacts since high school. Ever since then, I've been able to see clearly. It's a weird feeling, being able to see. It's indescribable. I encourage others to try it." -- Phil

"I feel the same." -- Amanda

"When I was in high school, I wore the kind of glasses Rivers Cuomo wore in those Weezer videos. They looked good, but I always worried that people thought I was trying too hard to fit in. After college, I decided to tone it down. My contacts make me feel more like myself. I look so weird when I don't wear them!" -- Zach

"Contacts suck. I wish I wore glasses instead, but I don't want them to break." -- Julia

"I don't even wear contacts tbh." -- Ashley

"I love wearing my contacts. Sometimes I match them with my outfit for a little extra flair." -- Ruby

"No comment." -- Ryan

Cindy Crawford: 'Sexy Is A Feeling, You Don't Wear It On The Outside'

Cindy Crawford dominated '90s runways and magazine covers, oozing sex appeal with her mile-long legs"unforgettable" red lips and famous mole. Decades later, the Midwestern beauty hasn't allowed body image and aging pressures to stop her from baring it all, though she admits that she feels just as sexy when wearing clothes.

The supermodel and Meaningful Beauty founder spoke with The Huffington Post at a launch to promote her new book Becoming on Tuesday, and revealed why she chooses to "air on the side of sophistication."

"Sexy is a feeling," said Crawford. "You can be sexy wearing your boyfriend's jeans and white shirt. I think especially as you get older, that you don't wear it on the outside."

This life lesson is among the many Crawford shares in "Becoming." Pairing a personal essay with each of the 50 iconic photos inside the book, the supermodel explains how certain experiences in front of the camera have helped her to become less self-conscious and more focused on creating positive messages. One of her essays focuses on fashion and aging.

"I don’t want to be one of those women who looks like she’s wearing her daughter's clothes," Crawford said of the topic. "I feel more comfortable in a longer skirt. You just get to a point where that feels like me now."

But no matter what she's wearing, Crawford oozes sex appeal and confidence.

Scroll down for a peek at some of the iconic images from "Becoming by Cindy Crawford." Visit Rizzoliusa.com to buy the book ($50) once it's released next month. Note: Some images below may be NSFW.

Caitlyn Jenner Will Not Be Charged With Vehicular Manslaughter

The Los Angeles County District Attorney has decided that Caitlyn Jenner will not be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter or any crime in connection with a car crash last February that left one woman dead, reports TMZ.

The district attorney's office made the decision after receiving a report from the LA County Sheriff's Department in mid-August and found that the 65-year-old's conduct was not "unreasonable" based on all the facts presented in the report.

Investigators had determined that Jenner was not speeding, but she was still traveling at an unsafe speed for road conditions when her Cadillac Escalade rear-ended two cars, pushing Kim Howe’s car into oncoming traffic, causing the fatal crash.

Before they made the decision public, sources told TMZ that, after reading the 161-page report, it seemed unlikely that Jenner would face any criminal charges.

Jenner's lawyer, Blair Berk, told TMZ they are "heartened" by the decision, adding that "a traffic accident, however devastating and heartbreaking when a life is lost, is not necessarily a criminal matter."

Is Kate Hudson's 'Fabletics' A Scam? Unhappy Customers Weigh In

$
0
0

Over the past few days, Fabletics, the Kate Hudson-fronted athletic apparel website owned by online retail giant Just Fab, has come under fire for claims it is scamming customers into being charged a monthly subscription fee that is difficult to cancel.

Buzzfeed News, which claims that the brand has been "conning customers into unwanted subscriptions since at least 2004," spoke with a representative from the brand, who said "as a fashion company, our flexible-subscription business model makes it possible to pass along the substantial savings we realize to our customers."

Still, the complaints about confusing and unclear practices on the site rage on. Julia Jornsay-Silverberg, one of many customers to issue complaints about the deceptive "VIP" option listed on the site, chatted with The Huffington Post about her particularly trying experience with the brand.

Upon searching the site, it seems you are able to checkout as a one-time customer, without signing up for a monthly subscription. For a promotion, which Jornsay-Silverberg said is what brought her to the site in the first place ("I saw the deal promoted through an aggressive paid Facebook campaign run by Fabletics"), you are required to become a "VIP member."

Opting in to VIP membership means giving Fabletics authority to charge your credit card $49.95 each month -- UNLESS, it reads, you log in by the 5th to "skip the month" for each month you don't want to choose an outfit.

It may seem like a no-brainer to simply buy things one-time, but the site itself is confusing, listing three prices for each item, and it's not always obvious which option that is. Jornsay-Silverberg adds, "Only after purchasing the item did I see that I was now a registered for a VIP program. It felt awful to be duped like that," she said.

The real issue with the site appears to lie within its customer service experience.

"I took the initiative to contact the company via e-mail, phone and Twitter and got contradictory responses," said Jornsay-Silverberg. "I was told over the phone that my account was canceled, without having to provide a confirmation or account number. When I tweeted, one person said the account was canceled and another told me I had to do it over the phone."

HuffPost Lifestyle's Chanel Parks, who tried recently to use a gift card on the site, expressed similar woes about the brand's customer service. "I tried using a gift card that was still valid on the site, yet it kept telling me I couldn't use it," said Parks. "After trying to get through to customer service and being hung up on a couple of times (which prompted me to keep calling), I finally got a solid answer."

After going back and forth on Twitter (through a DM response Jornsay-Siverberg says came hours later), she finally got back on the phone with Fabletics' customer service and "it finally seemed to go through."

So what was she left with? "An admittedly nice pair of leggings and a big headache," along with a tank top "so bad I had to throw it out" and a sports bra. "I actually really like the leggings. But out of principle, I won't buy from a company that engages in shady campaigns and promotions like this," she said.

11 Carefree Kids Show The Beauty And Joy Of Black Hair

Black kids and their hair are beautiful, magical and carefree -- and one new photo series powerfully reiterates that message.

U.K.-based photographer Emily Stein developed a photo series titled "Hairdo," which features photos of black children from London in playful poses with their beautiful bantu knots, twists, and zig-zag tapered fades. In each image, the child's picture shines with his or her own charismatic expression and unique hairstyle.

Given how often black children are treated unfairly because of their hair or even punished for it, the series offers a reminder that hair can be a source of joy and self-expression, for kids and grownups alike.

Stein allowed the kids to choose their own poses, so their images would truly represent their individual identities. "I wanted the photographs to have their own stamp on them, whether they were yawning, hiding or pouting," Stein told The Huffington Post.

The children in Stein's photographs reveal how hair can emote joy, and "be a celebration of both style and individuality," Stein said. Ultimately, she said she hopes these images will leave viewers with a powerful message:  "I would [want] people who look at the series [to] feel the positive energy of youth and the spirit of undiluted individuality," Stein said."
