We're starting to feel the end of the month grind (we're counting down the days until our next payday), but we still want to shop. So what do we do? Look out for the deals, obviously.

And this week, Hollywood set a pretty great example. The Kardashian-Jenner clan stepped out in affordable crop tops, American Apparel choker tops and Topshop dresses, and our favorite supermodel, Christie Brinkley, rocked a Madewell T-shirt. If the stars can do it, so can we.

Check out other celebrities who wore affordable items this week and let us know which ones you're adding to your wish list.

The Do's And Don'ts Of Rainy Day Dressing

0
0

There's nothing worse than getting caught in the rain unprepared. Slogging around in wet socks, windswept hair and a totally drenched ensemble is no way to spend your day. It's just downright unpleasant.

The problem is, rain is incredibly difficult to dress for. Showers can be spotty, which brings about changing temps. One minute you're shivering, the next you're sweating. No thank you.

To end this madness, we've put together a guide for simple, smart rainy day dressing. Take our advice and you'll be stress free during the next downpour. Who knows, maybe you'll even look forward to it.

Don't:Wear delicate fabrics like silk, or light colors like white.

Do: Opt for something sturdy and simple in a dark shade.

Rainy Day Dressing - Tops

,Embed,html,Some({}))

Don't let your top be the afterthought of your rainy day ensemble. A long-sleeved breathable tee or lightweight sweater makes a great base for your raincoat. You'll make layering look oh so easy.

Get the look: J.Crew Striped Long-Sleeve T-Shirt With Shirttail Hem, $78H&M Fine-Knit Sweater, $24.99Madewell Ex-Boyfriend plaid cotton-flannel shirt, $80

Don't: Wear heavy trousers with lots of body.

Do: Pick slim pants in a lightweight, quick dry fabric. Go for black, as it won't show signs of rain or muddy debris.

Rainy Day Dressing - Pants

,Embed,html,Some({}))

When it's wet and windy, your best bet is a pair of skinny trousers or leggings. They'll hold their shape even if you're drenched or caught in a chilling gust of wind. They'll also dry quickly, which means you won't be sitting at your desk soaked all day.

Get the look: Zara Wide Waist Leggings, $29.90; J Brand Scuba Pants, $228J.Crew Pixie Pant, $98

Don't: Wear a flimsy wind breaker.

Do: Try a longer jacket for full coverage, and make sure it's legitimately water repellent.

Rainy Day Dressing - Jackets

,Embed,html,Some({}))

Ever been walking in the rain and your thighs get drenched? Your umbrella can't cover everything, so try a jacket that offers more protection. We recommend a sturdy jacket that extends mid-thigh or to your knees like a classic trench.

Get the look: Uniqlo Women Waterproof Pocketable Coat, $39.90; Zara Water Repellant Cotton Raincoat, $129; chimala® bivouac hooded jacket, $425.50.

Don't: Wear tall, clunky wellies.

Do: Choose a sleek, short pair for more comfort and style.

Rainy Day Dressing - Boots

,Embed,html,Some({}))

Traditional tall rain boots can often be stiff and bulky, which makes walking around in the rain that much worse. Rubber does not breathe well, so stick to boot styles that are short and sleek. They'll protect you from stepping in puddles, but won't make your calves hot and sticky.

Get the look: J.Crew Chelsea Leopard Rain Boots, $68; Gioseppo Ankle Boots, $46Tretorn Emma Rubber Boots, $100.

Don't: Get caught without proper rainy day accessories.

Do: Choose pieces that minimize stress by maximizing function.

Rainy Day Dressing - Accessories

,Embed,html,Some({}))

If well selected, accessories can be your best friend on a rainy day. Keep your hair dry with a warm and cozy beanie, swap your leather handbag for an all-weather cross body and, most importantly, invest in a sturdy umbrella.

Get the look: Club Monaco Colleen Cashmere Tweed Hat, $89.50Monki Gold Metallic Cross Body Bag, $27Hunter Original Mustache Bubble Umbrella, $55

This Fitness Instructor Is Our New Body Hero

0
0

Anula Maiberg decided to stop comparing herself to the stereotypical image of a fitness instructor a long time ago.

A Pilates teacher and co-owner of Sixth Street Pilates studio in Manhattan, Maiberg describes herself as a curvy, full-figured lady. To her, this is a fact that's "not particularly interesting to talk about." But it is central to her studio's inclusive mission, and that mission is attracting notice.

ImageContent(562a7223e4b0ec0a389460f8,562a6caf140000e800c7ab57,Image,HectorAssetUrl(562a6caf140000e800c7ab57.png,Some(),Some(png)),Emily Johnston,)

Maiberg's staffers are from all walks of life; they're not all former dancers as seems to be common in such settings. Some have backgrounds in martial arts and one is an aerialist, she said. Some are covered in tattoos from head to toe, while others have hair colors that could light a night sky.

It's probably one of the reasons her classes and private sessions are full of returning students: All bodies are welcome, and all bodies are able.

Maiberg explained that the original 34 positions invented by Joseph Pilates (yes, a real person) were intended for every person to be able to do. His concept was that if you practiced Pilates each day, you'd be able to move well in the world and accomplish the other tasks necessary in your day-to-day. It started as a very practical art, Maiberg said, noting Pilates himself was a "burly dude" who "taught a lot of other dudes."

"Pilates isn't only fitness. It's a life. It's a set of thoughts, connecting your mind to your body, being present, breathing," she said.

In the same vein, the workout doesn't just offer svelte physical benefits. Maiberg doesn't believe most people are looking at their instructor as an aspirational body.

"They're looking at you as an aspirational person," she explained.

"If I get one person to leave the room having done a pull up or held a plank for one minute -- not super profound things, but one thing they thought they could never do -- my job is done at that point," Mailberg said.

Why I Refuse To Dye My Gray Hair

0
0
My hair first started going gray in my late twenties. At the time I was going through a divorce, had just given birth to my third child and started a new relationship with a divorced dad of four girls.

Not only did I start going gray, but my hair also decided to start falling out, in clumps. Thankfully that trend soon righted itself but the grays kept on coming.

Not being one to shy away from things to do with my body I decided to dye my hair black (it was a dark brown to start off with) and to enhance my grays by getting the whole piece dyed silver.

This was my one and only foray into "doing something about my grays"

In my mind gray hair just needs a better P.R. team. For starters we could stop calling it "gray" hair and instead call it "silver" which automatically takes it into another league altogether. In fact, I refuse to call my hair gray. I have silver highlights not gray hair. And that is the way it will stay. The "highlights" might be taking over but I will not become one of those women who are clearly well into their 60s with jet black hair because really, who do they think they are kidding?

I remember reading somewhere, when I was in my teens, that there are two places that you can always tell a woman's age; one is her hands and the other, her neck. This started me on an obsession to wear gloves while doing the dishes and to lavish moisturizer on my hands at any given opportunity. I didn't worry about my neck until it was to late.

At heart, I am basically lazy and the thought of spending hours getting my hair dyed, not to mention the expense, seems like more effort than I can summon. This doesn't mean that I don't care about my appearance because I do. I love to get my eyebrows shaped and tinted. Ironic, I know, that I will tint my eyebrows and leave the rest of my hair alone but having tinted eyebrows really helps lift the rest of my face.

I like to dress up even if I am sitting at home in front of my computer tapping away at the keyboard. Not for me slouching about in sweat pants and an old tee shirt. When I head out then on goes the make up and the jewelry, although I am just as comfortable without the make up the bling is essential.

The greatest aspect of getting older is learning to accept my body and myself. This is an ongoing process. I wish it was a one hit wonder but just as I get comfortable with one thing something else rears its head to check if I can love all of myself.

Learning to love my gray hair was easy because I know that each and every strand of my silver hair tells a story.

Some are from the struggles and strains of that messy divorce and the new relationship.

Some are from the juggling of two young kids, a baby, a relationship and teenage girls.

Some are from shifting miles away from all that I knew to forge a new start in a new town with that partner.

Some are from the tumultuous teen years of my growing boys. The late nights worrying if they were okay as they were off doing their teenage thing.

Some are just from the stress and strain of juggling kids and work and relationship all in one day.

And I wouldn't be without any of them.

I know that going gray ( silver, can we just all agree and decide it is silver and not gray?? Please?) is not for everyone. Admitting that we are getting older is a challenge in this youth-obsessed culture that we live in. Let's face it that window marked "youth" is incredibly fleeting and much as we try to re-frame forty as the new thirty or fifty as the new forty the simple fact of the matter is that we are getting older. Lets embrace that as a good thing, not everyone is so lucky.

A Retrospective Of Katy Perry's Rainbow Hair Through The Years

Who knows what Katy Perry's hair color is now, or what it will be this time tomorrow?

It seems any color is game, as she told Glamour earlier this month, "Who knows what kind of woman I’ll be that night?" There are blogs about her hair, endless articles, and heck, we've even given the subject its own page.

To celebrate Katheryn Elizabeth "Katy" Hudson's 31st birthday, which falls on Oct. 25, we take a trip magical enough for Rainbow Brite through the singer's technicolor hairstyle history.

It's proof that, even if you're born with "boring dishwater squirrel brown" hair, when you're Katy Perry, any hair color is a good hair color.

Gwyneth Paltrow Shines In Mermaid Dress At Environmental Media Awards

Gwyneth Paltrow stunned in a sea-green mermaid dress on the red carpet at the Environmental Media Association Awards on Saturday.

The actress received the 2015 Green Parent Award for her efforts to increase visibility of pressing environmental issues and make corporations label GMOs in their products.

The exquisite cutout dress, part of Cushnie et Ochs' Spring 2016 line, perfectly accentuated Paltrow's toned midriff and defined collarbone. She paired the dress with few accessories and strappy gold heels.

Paltrow's mother and fellow actress Blythe Danner accompanied her to the event. The two posed for pictures together after the ceremony in dresses of complementary colors.

These Are The Most Controversial Celebrity Halloween Costumes

0
0

These celebrities sure know how to put the "outrage" in outrageous when it comes to Halloween costumes. You have to wonder what some of these stars were thinking when they got suited up in these outfits. Perhaps their publicists were off for the holiday?

Behold, some of the most controversial celebrity Halloween costumes:

Chris Brown as a terrorist

The "Liquor" singer decided to show up to Rihanna's 2012 Halloween Party dressed as a terrorist. Him? Controversial? What a surprise.

ImageContent(56265747e4b0bce34702398f,56263d2e1400002b003c8a32,Image,HectorAssetUrl(56263d2e1400002b003c8a32.jpeg,Some(),Some(jpeg)),Splash News,)

Ashley Benson as Cecil the Lion

People weren't too thrilled this year when the "Pretty Little Liars" star dressed up as Cecil, a rare black-maned lion who was killed by a U.S. dentist. After fans deemed the costume insensitive and in poor taste, the actress issued an apology and said she would donate to the World Wildlife Fund to make up for the blunder.

Julianne Hough as Crazy Eyes from "Orange is the New Black"

Blackface: never a good idea

Lily Allen as Dr. Luke

The British songstress went for the shock factor when she dressed up as a gynecologist named Dr. Luke in 2014. The costume referenced singer Kesha's lawsuit against the famed producer of the same name, in which she claimed he sexually assaulted, drugged and verbally abused her. TMZ noted that Lily Allen and Kesha are friendly, but making light of a potential sexual assault case is probably not the best idea for a Halloween costume, regardless of intentions.

Heidi Klum as Goddess Kali

Klum's extravagant Halloween costumes rarely disappoint, but in 2008, some took offense when she dressed up as the Hindu goddess Kali. Hindu-American leaders demanded an apology from Klum for "posing as a sacred figure" and for "using the religion for decoration or to advance [her] selfish agenda."

Trump, Pizza Rat Among Top Halloween Costumes

EmbedContent(562d40b5e4b0443bb5644a7f,,Embed,aolon,Some({}))

NEW YORK, Oct 25 (Reuters) - When a Donald Trump look-alike and a faux Caitlyn Jenner ring the doorbell on Halloween night, they may solicit a piece of candy but the treat they really seek is recognition.

Pop culture experts say these "ripped from the headlines" costumes to celebrate the Oct. 31 holiday - such as "El Chapo" the fugitive Mexican cartel kingpin or "Left Shark" from pop star Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime show - are a way for adults to connect in a world splintered by a myriad of choices for information and entertainment.

While children typically dress up as witches and ghosts, the most popular costume this year among adults shopping on Yandy.com is The Optical Illusion Dress, the subject of an online debate that went viral over its color. The hot seller is a compromise: half blue and black, half white and gold, said CEO Chad Horstman.

Also in high demand is Pizza Rat - a gray mini dress with a tail, hood, ears and two pepperoni pizza slice pockets - that is arguably sexier than the video of a New York City rat dragging a pizza slice down subway steps, shared more than 100,000 times on Twitter in the last month, according to Topsy.com.

The lion-slaying dentist Walter Palmer of Minnesota who gained notoriety for his trophy kill of Cecil the Lion, considered a national treasure in Zimbabwe, inspired a $139.99 getup from Costumeish.com, complete with a blood spattered dental smock and mock lion head.

"It used to be we all watched the same TV shows, we all knew the same cultural references. Now the culture is really fragmented," said Robert Thompson, who teaches pop culture at Syracuse University in upstate New York. "These news stories, the ones that hit the big time, that cross that point of penetration, those are the things that everybody shares."

Jim Von Schilling, the Pennsylvania-based area chairman of the Popular Culture Association, said when it comes to envisioning a Halloween costume, imaginations are sparked by current events.

"The world around us is our pop culture," said Von Schilling.

 LIMITS TO POKING FUN

The costumes are meant to touch a nerve, but some vendors say there are lines they will not cross.

Ricky's NYC, a beauty supply store that features Halloween costumes, and Yandy.com both decided against carrying a Caitlyn Jenner costume featuring a shiny white padded bustier resembling the outfit the Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star formerly known as Bruce wore to come out as transgender in a Vanity Fair cover story.

"The transgender community is a huge portion of my customer base and is incredibly offended by this," said Richard Parrott, president of Ricky's. "I don't really see anything funny about somebody wanting to change their gender. There is no place to really poke fun."

Jenner told NBC News last month that she did not find the costume offensive: "I'm in on the joke... I think it's great."

Politicians are typically fair game and Ricky's carries a Hillary Clinton mask and Yandy a Donald Trump costume consisting of a white collared shirt, red tie, royal blue blazer and "booty shorts" with extra accessories including a "Making America Great" hat and a straw colored "comb over politician wig."

Halloween costumes that snark rather than spook tend to focus on figures who have fallen from grace, said Jack Santino, who teaches popular culture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

"They are people who were kind of ridiculous and there is a kind of 'Emperor Has No Clothes' element," Santino said. "At Halloween, people just mock them to say, 'We all know you're ridiculous. You're not fooling anyone.'"

Irreverent Halloween costumes tend to be worn by adults but some parents, seizing on the natural tendency of babies to look like old men, have been dressing their infants as Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, with eyeglasses and unruly white wigs, posting their pictures to Twitter as #BabiesForBernie.

Ready-made costumes can be expensive but for frugal Trick or Treaters there is a free online makeup tutorial that a cosmetologist posted on Instagram with tips for looking like Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same-same marriage licenses. There just aren't enough flame emojis in the world for these two ladies.

Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Jenner joined forces at Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing's star-studded birthday bash on Friday. Lopez, 46, opted for a daring black number complete with cutouts:

Jenner, 18, posed for photos in a white crocheted ensemble:

The "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star took to Instagram to share a selfie of the stylish pair. It racked up a million likes in a day, of course:

After canceling her baby shower last week due to Lamar Odom's health issues, Kim Kardashian's friends and family gathered this weekend to celebrate the impending arrival of her second child with a "Troop Beverly Hills"-themed bash.

All her sisters (including Khloe) embraced their inner Wilderness Girl by wearing matching striped pajamas as they sipped tea and hot chocolate, and snacked on some Thin Mints.

Kendall Jenner Is Topless In Her Latest Racy Instagram Snap

We're not sure if anything comes between Kendall Jenner and her Calvins, but she certainly didn't want a little thing like a shirt distracting fans from the new jeans the company over.

The Secret To Pulling Off Thigh-High Boots With Class

0

Thigh-high boots are a fall staple. They keep your legs toasty and make any outfit look more pulled together. But sometimes, it can be tricky to figure out how to wear them appropriately with skirts and dresses.

Thankfully, Toronto fashion blogger Franceta Johnson has shown us how it's done. The key to wearing a short hemline with a pair of thigh-high boots is to choose a pair of boots with a flat heel, so the outfit isn't too sexy (especially for the office). Here, we love how Johnson paired her leather boots with a houndstooth dress (to add a little texture), a denim jacket (to make the look more effortless) and a pair of aviators (to protect her eyes and skin from the sun). There's just a sliver of skin showing in this perfectly crafted look. Check out her look and shop similar items below.

Avoid Overdone Halloween Costumes With Google's Frightgeist Map

You may think you designed a truly groovy Halloween costume, but nothing's worse than showing up to find everyone else had the exact same idea.

Google's new Frightgeist map prevents this horror by tracking costume trends around the country. It'll tell you the most popular costume in your city -- or at least a city near you -- based on Google searches. That way, you can avoid being the same boring thing as everyone else.

The top trending costumes in L.A. and San Francisco, for example, are Star Wars. And in Seattle, the most popular costume is Harley Quinn. In NYC, most people are searching for superhero costumes. And in St. Joseph, Missouri, they want to be... sharks?!

Find your city's most overdone costume on Google's interactive map.

Chrissy Teigen Shows Off Baby Bump In Cute Crop Top

Chrissy Teigen kept it casual while running errands in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The 29-year-old model and TV personality wore a cute gray crop top showing off her tiny baby bump and paired it with black leggings and black Nike trainers. Teigen announced that she was expecting a child with husband John Legend in early October.

Teigen recently had to defend her baby bump after Instagramming a picture of herself and her growing stomach. Commenters began speculating that Teigen was pregnant with twins and the model fought back against the comments on Twitter.

But it doesn't look like a little Internet controversy will stop Teigen from having more babies. The model told HuffPost Live in May 2014 that she wanted a big family, resembling an "Angelina-Brad-type brood."

"We want a lot of kids," said Teigen. "I would love to have three or four of my own, and then adopt a few. So basically I’ll be pregnant the rest of my life."

9 Magical Beauty Hacks Hiding In Your Medicine Cabinet

By Deven Hopp

2015-10-24-1445645493-931415-_square.jpg

Ever looked at a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and wondered why is this taking up valuable real estate in my bathroom? Understandable. But if you're only taking the contents of your medicine cabinet at face value, you're missing out on a world of possibilities. Whiter teeth, clump-free eyelashes, an even self-tanner application, and more could all be yours, if you've figured out these little-known beauty hacks.

Scroll through to find out why the inside of your medicine cabinet is your biggest untapped beauty resource!

Improve a Bruise
2015-10-24-1445645584-6309749-1Mouthwash.jpg

Nothing steals the spotlight from a killer skirt more than an unsightly bruise. Next time you accidentally walk into the coffee table, break out the mouthwash. Saturate a cotton ball with your oral rinse of choice and apply it to the afflicted area to make it look better instantly.

Prevent Self-Tanner Stains
2015-10-24-1445645622-465694-2Vaseline.jpg

Don't begin your next sunless-tanner application without applying Vaseline first. Smooth it over dry spots like cuticles, elbows, knees, and heels to prevent staining the areas that self-tanner would normally cling to. Use it along your hairline when coloring your hair at home to prevent stains there too.

Bring Down a Pimple
2015-10-24-1445645674-8506280-3Visine.jpg

Ice can help bring down the size of pimple, but it won't do much for the redness (except perhaps make it even redder). When you've got a stubborn zit that you know is going to show through your most zealous concealer application, dab some Visine on it. It'll get the red out within a few minutes.

Remove Nail Polish

You can use deodorant to do just about anything, but our favorite non-underarm application has to be nail polish removal. Finding an empty bottle of nail polish remover when all you want is to take your chipped manicure off is the worst. Luckily, a spritz of deodorant works too.

Whiten Teeth
2015-10-24-1445645751-9924924-5HydrogenPeroxide.jpg

A 60-second swish with hydrogen peroxide not only leaves your mouth feeling clean, but also whitens your teeth. You'll feel a fizz while the tiny bubbles scrub away stains and kill germs.

De-Clump Mascara
2015-10-24-1445645783-4883727-6Toothbrush.jpg

Clumpy mascara and not a spoolie in sight? A toothbrush can get the job done. Bonus: You can also use it to brush unruly eyebrows into submission (and more!).

Treat Ingrown Hairs
2015-10-24-1445645826-9203130-7WitchHazel.jpg

Witch hazel, the all-purpose healer, is made for treating minor cuts and scrapes, but it's also a product to turn to when in-grown hairs appear.

Remove Hairspray
2015-10-24-1445645858-3092280-9rubbingalcohol.jpg

There are two issues with hairspray. 1) It gets everywhere. 2) And then it stays there. If you've got a layer of hairspray coating every surface of your bathroom, forget scrubbing with soap and water--wipe down your mirrors and countertops with rubbing alcohol instead. It cuts right through the stubborn film and leaves surfaces sparkling clean.

Prevent Wardrobe Malfunctions
2015-10-24-1445645892-6796760-8Bandaids.jpg

No bra, no problem? Not always. While concealing a wardrobe malfunction of the visible nipple variety is not exactly a beauty hack, we thought it worthwhile to point out this smart alternative use for bandages.

Dad's Cartoons Capture Daily Life With His Vibrant Daughter Who Has Down Syndrome

0
0

Connecticut dad Fred Wills has been drawing cartoons practically his entire life, so it was only natural he would make them for his five children. As his youngest daughter Jessica has grown older, his cartoon drawings of her have taken on a life of their own.

ImageContent(562a9473e4b0443bb5640374,562a9452140000e800c7abd2,Image,HectorAssetUrl(562a9452140000e800c7abd2,Some(),Some(png)),Fred Wills,)

The “Just Jessica” series highlights the many sides of Wills' vibrant 15-year-old daughter. Jessica has Down syndrome, but the dad emphasizes that her disability doesn’t define her.

"As the years have passed I don't even think about her as different,” Wills told The Huffington Post. “She's like all my children and loved as much, no more no less. Of course we have to fight for her rights, make sure she gets the education she needs, and find the programs and structure she will need to make it though her life happy and healthy. But don't you do that for all your children?"

Jessica is is “just like everybody else, more alike than different, but with one simple twist, she has an extra chromosome,” he continued.

Using photographs he takes of his daughter, Wills draws a new Just Jessica cartoon each evening, pulling inspiration from random things she says or does during the day. He then posts the finished drawing on the refrigerator the following morning at 4:30 a.m., when he wakes up for his job as a registered nurse.

"Jessica loves the cartoons,” Wills told HuffPost. “It's the first thing she looks for each morning when she comes down for breakfast.”

ImageContent(562a9473e4b0443bb5640376,562a8bf6140000e800c7abc3,Image,HectorAssetUrl(562a8bf6140000e800c7abc3,Some(),Some(png)),Fred Wills,)

After getting “a little online exposure,” Wills' Just Jessica Facebook page, where he shares the cartoons, currently has over 1,500 followers -- a considerable increase from the 30-40 friends and family members who initially followed along when he launched it just over a year ago. Wills calls the positive response “overwhelming and humbling.”

"I have been shocked by how fast this has spread,” he said. "We have followers from all over the world, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Great Britain, Pakistan, China, South America most of Europe and more. It keeps growing everyday."

Wills says he’s been encouraging followers to share their own photos, thoughts and experiences. "Pictures of beautiful children and adults with Down syndrome are pouring in,” he said. People are sharing how they are inspired and touched by what we are doing. Others are asking meaningful questions about Down syndrome.”

The dad says others are starting to refer to their loved ones with special needs as “Just Mary” or “Just Johnny,” and even educators are sharing his cartoons in classrooms.

"Just Jessica really has no defined stigma, she is just Jessica. More alike than different,” Wills said, adding a call to action for his followers.

"Spread the message that there are no categories of people, there are just people. Help people not look at people with 'special needs' or ‘disabilities' as such and as different and in need, but as regular people first."

For now, Wills hopes to keep up with the daily cartoon project, but he’s toying with other inspiring ideas for the future.

"We do talk about developing a foundation to spread the word and help provide opportunities for people to be 'Just Themselves' as they dance along that thin line of special needs and what many refer to as normal.”

Keep scrolling and follow Just Jessica on Facebook to see Wills' inspiring cartoons.

A Step By Step To Vacationing In The Mountains

0
0

By Maurizio Bono

Reinhold Messner, the famous mountain climber and writer, already said it 20 years ago in a small manual, Salvate le Alpi (Save the Alps): for skiers and snowboarders the mountains mean snow, for climbers they mean rocks and for tourists they mean a postcard. Instead it is – and should be – all this and more, as long as you understand and respect them. If you look at them together as clearly as the astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti did recently from space, white with snow and forming a wavy line from France to Slovenia, curling at the beginning and swirling north at the end, the Alps are actually a pathway, a difficult and complicated road that has always had to be traveled, given their location in the heart of Europe. The 300,000 square kilometers – nearly 116,000 square miles – of valleys and passes have been continuously crossed from prehistory until today. (Let’s forget the peaks for the moment, as they’ve only become a recent destination: the 150th anniversary of the first expedition to the Matterhorn was celebrated a short time ago and it’s been nearly 230 years since Paccard and Balmat climbed Mont Blanc on August 8, 1786.) It is a “chain” made up links that are tightly knit but not impenetrable, so unique and imposing that it is simply called “mountain” – if that is the true meaning of the pre-Celtic word Alb.

ImageContent(562e49d2e4b0aac0b8fd8190,562e46951400002200c7ad0f,Image,HectorAssetUrl(562e46951400002200c7ad0f.png,Some(),Some(png)),Getty Images,)

The worldwide tourist organization provided official data on vacations and sports for the Alps: 100 million visitors, representing about 12 percent of worldwide tourism. The latest report on the status of the Alps published by the Alpine Convention, the international treaty signed by the eight European countries linked by the mountain chain, is dedicated to “sustainable tourism,” while other efforts go to the ecology of transport and defense of the Alpine population (17 million people). Messner keeps saying it: the mountain must be seen as a whole. It is a bit like climbing: the only things that save you are balance and wisdom.

What You Need To Know About Going Gray In Your 20s

Spotting a wiry silver hair can be a rude awakening for those of us who aren't George Clooney. Especially at the tender age of 23. But if you've spotted a gray strand before your 30th birthday, don't panic. (Or pluck!) HuffPost spoke to a few experts to find out why some men go gray early and if there's anything you can do to slow it down.

1. Your hair turns gray when color-producing cells stop producing pigment.

When your body stops producing melanin, a pigment found in the hair follicle, your hair goes gray, explains Dr. Eric Schweiger, a New York dermatologist and founder of Schweiger Dermatology Group.

Another factor that may contribute to gray hair is the buildup of hydrogen peroxide in the hair, he says. As you grow older, the enzyme catalase that breaks down hydrogen peroxide diminishes. This leaves your hair bleached by hydrogen peroxide.

2. Premature graying is largely linked to genetics.

Premature graying is all in the genes. In other words, if your parents and grandparents went gray early, you probably will too. "When we are born our bodies are already programmed with the information to begin the process," says Dr. Michael Eidelman, Medical Director of Chelsea Skin & Laser and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

This explains why some people go gray as early as age 20, while others don't see their first silver strand until they're 50. Eidelman says genetics not only play an important role in the onset of gray hair, but they also determine its progress, intensity and gray, silver or white color.

3. Ethnicity and gender play a role in going gray, too.

Caucasians begin to gray in their mid-30's, Asians in their late 30's and African Americans in their 40's, according to a 2011 research analysis published in The Dermatologist.

"On average, 50 percent of the population will have 50 percent gray hair by the age of 50," says Eidelman. Gender seems to play a role as well: Men start graying closer to 30, while women begin to notice gray hairs around 35, Schweiger notes.

4. In rare cases, going gray may present itself as a medical condition.

Going gray is a natural process and only in rare circumstances should it raise a red flag, says Eidelman. Medically speaking, going gray could potentially be associated with a vitamin B-12 deficiency, anemia, vitiligo or issues with the pituitary or thyroid gland.

5. Smoking can increase your odds of getting gray hair.

Studies have shown a significant correlation between smoking and the onset of gray hair before age 30. A 2010 study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that smokers are two and half times more likely to develop premature gray hair than non-smokers.

Not only has smoking been linked to premature gray hair, but also to baldness. The chemicals in smoke can break down the hair cells and damage hair, according to The New York Times.

6. Stress may or may not have a negative effect on your hair.

There is no clear evidence that daily stress or life trauma cause premature graying, according to Scientific American. But Schweiger says stress hormones may affect the melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) in the hair, urging gray growth.

"No one turns gray overnight, but stress can cause you to shed hairs more quickly," Eidelman clarifies. "That said, it's unlikely that only the dark ones fall out preferentially."

7. Gray hair does not signify a shorter life span.

Good news, silver foxes: Schweiger and Eidelman both agree that early onset gray hair does not mean a shorter life span. There is simply no clinical evidence to show graying affects longevity, or is any indication of life expectancy.

A 1998 Danish study spanning 20,000 men and women, published in The Journals of Gerontology and cited by The New York Times, "found no correlation between the mortality and the extent of graying of the hair or baldness ... in either of the sexes, irrespective of age."

8. Typically, body hair grays later than hair on the scalp.

The hairs of the body, nose, face, chest and pubic area gray at a different rate than the scalp. In the majority of people, body hair usually occurs later, if at all, according to Eidelman and Medline.

9. There is no proven way to reverse gray hair.

There is no scientific evidence to show that tonics, lotions, potions, creams, scalp massage or vitamins prevent graying, says Eidelman. He adds, however, that your body can reverse gray hair if you have a rare case of an illness that triggered the gray.

"For example, some people get a temporary hair loss condition called alopecia areata and when the hair grows in, at first it may grow in white until the hair pigment cells catch up with the growth of the new hair," he says.

10. To conceal gray hair, dying is the best option.

For those who want to cover up their silver strands, Schweiger says hair dye is the best option.

Eidelman points out that dying might not be the most natural look for men because with short hair, the roots will show very quickly and too many touch-ups can leave the hair dry and varying in color. He recommends asking a hair stylist for a look with low-lights or highlights to camouflage the gray.

11. For gray hair, use a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner.

As the hair grays, its texture changes and can become coarser, drier and more brittle. Eidelman recommends using a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner to help hydrate the hair.

He also suggests not using a blow dryer, not shampooing every day and using a light texture cream or pomade to style graying hair.
