Tinder, Bumble, and the MVP of Online Dating Profile Pictures

$
0
0
If you're a millennial who is currently single, or if you've been single at some point in the last few years, there's a good chance you've dabbled with Tinder. Or Bumble. Hinge. Happn. JSwipe. OkCupid. Plenty of Fish. Farmers Only? Alright, I'll stop there. What I'm getting at is, there are a lot of dating apps. So many, in fact, that you'd think it would be easier than it is to find someone who doesn't take sitting-in-the-front-seat-of-my-own-car selfies or pose with a tiger (okay, that one really isn't so bad).

As a millennial who became single around the time Tinder started getting big, I've done my fair share of swiping. I've even had a lot of real dates (I promise you, they exist if you make room for them) with great guys who I came to realize just weren't long-term matches for me outside of an app.

Now, although my Tinder days are pretty far behind me, I am admittedly a fan of Bumble. It might be due to the fact that I like making sure a conversation gets started on a fun, thoughtful note (on Bumble, the girl has to message the guy first when it comes to heterosexual matches), but I've simply had the most luck with it. So have the vast majority of guys and ladies I've spoken to about dating apps. That doesn't mean we've all found "the one," but we've had better conversations and better dates. And those I've talked to who use it mostly for something casual/physical? They've had a more positive experience as well in terms of conversation and comfortability.

The reason behind Bumble's success? It could be that women are champs at getting a conversation started on the right foot (and generally don't throw unsolicited dick pics at people). It could be that the minds behind Bumble are doing something different and better behind the scenes to attract quality individuals. Or maybe it's that quality men like empowered women who can start a conversation. Whatever the reason, or combination of reasons, it's working.

So, after a few years of using and testing dating apps, I think I've seen it all. I like to think, though, that for all the weird, creepy, and aggressive types (and there's been a whole lotta that), I've seen a good amount that are cute, charming, funny, and creative. Speaking of funny and creative... Let me introduce you to Harrison, a 27-year-old fella living in Los Angeles who put some serious effort (and humor) into his Bumble profile.

And to top it all off, his bio reads: "Looking for somebody to help me take care of my Tamagotchi."

Well, Harrison, you definitely got some laughs. Four for you, Harrison! You go, Harrison! (And good luck with that Tamagotchi!)

Listen To Taylor Swift Sing A Stripped-Down Version Of 'Out Of The Woods'

To celebrate the one year anniversary of "1989," Taylor Swift is giving us all a present -- a stripped-down version of "Out of the Woods."

The video below shows Swift belting out her smash hit at the Grammy Museum on Sept. 30. Swift's exhibit, The Taylor Swift Experience, ran from December 13, 2014 to October 4, 2015 at the museum and the singer closed it out with this performance.

Before performing the song, Swift talked about the relationship that inspired it. When "Out of the Woods" came out, rumors swirled that the 25-year-old wrote it about one-time boyfriend Harry Styles

"I'm going to play you a song that I wrote about a relationship that I was in that the number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety," Swift said at the Grammy Museum.

"Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like 'OK, what's the next road block? What's the next thing that's gonna deter this? How long do we have before this just turns into an awful mess and we break up?'"

Take, it away Taylor!

And, of course, happy birthday "1989!"

1 year old today!! #HappyBirthday1989

Your Vulnerability Is Beautiful

$
0
0
I used to think that beauty was about covering things up, masking imperfections, painting on and lacquering until only the good stuff remained.

To succeed in any creative endeavor, the universe demands that you pay a toll. The price is that you have to show us who you really are. You have to lay it out there, the good, the bad and ESPECIALLY the ugly, the awkward and the uncomfortable. Because if you don't make yourself vulnerable in this way, then we're not interested. As humans, we are drawn to the quirky, the imperfect, the raw and the untouched. Because we are all unique, that is what we most to respond to in others -- their unique qualities, not their veil of perfection.

2015-10-26-1445886531-7193519-Insta_Vulnerability.png

The key to connecting with your audience is vulnerability. Self-proclaimed "Shame Researcher" and TED phenom Brené Brown gives an amazing talk on this topic, "The Power of Vulnerability." If you haven't seen this video yet, drop everything and watch it immediately! In her research, Brené stumbled across the three keys to success: courage, compassion and connection, all of which hinge on the willingness to let go and be vulnerable:

"These folks had, very simply, the courage to be imperfect. They had the compassion to be kind to themselves first and then to others, because, as it turns out, we can't practice compassion with other people if we can't treat ourselves kindly. And the last was they had connection, and -- this was the hard part -- as a result of authenticity, they were willing to let go of who they thought they should be in order to be who they were, which you have to absolutely do that for connection. The other thing that they had in common was this: They fully embraced vulnerability. They believed that what made them vulnerable made them beautiful."

In order to succeed, you've got to put it all out there, and share all the parts of you with the world, not just the ones that are left when you cleanly tuck all the messy stuff behind the veil. It's not just about getting recognition, it's about allowing people to feel a sense of connection with what you're creating, because that is where impact happens -- when the messy parts of the creator and the messy parts of the audience collide, over the piece of art that was created to put those messy parts before the world.

It's hard to open up and make yourself vulnerable by showing the world who you really are. To say, "Yes, this is who I am, and this is what I made for you." But doing so is the only way to make a real impact. Lean in to those uncomfortable feelings. Show us who you really are!

Kylie Jenner Looks Gorgeous In An Almost-No-Makeup Selfie

Well, this is refreshing.

Kylie Jenner, queen of contouring and elaborate hairstyles, posted a rare dressed-down selfie to Instagram Tuesday night.

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Simply captioned "no filter," Jenner appears in sweats, with her hair pulled back, and very minimal -- if any -- makeup.

Earlier in the day, she posted a photo in honor of Caitlyn Jenner's birthday that was a bit more glamorous, showing off some bangs and a nude lip.

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Of course, in true Kylie fashion, the sweatshirt in her no-makeup selfie had a little crop action going on. But we digress: This is still the least made-up we've seen her in a long time, and she looks absolutely fantastic.

Khloe Kardashian Says She's Not Getting Back Together With Lamar Odom Despite Calling Off Divorce

After Lamar Odom was hospitalized on Oct. 13, we learned two things about his relationship with Khloe Kardashian: their divorce had yet to be granted and Kardashian still very much cared about the former NBA player.

And while their decision to call off their divorce made headlines, Kardashian told People magazine she's not getting back with Odom -- at least not yet.

"There are too many other important things, too many medical things. It's not even in our brains, thinking about us as a couple or having a relationship right now," the 31-year-old said in her first interview since Odom's hospitalization.

According to Kardashian, Odom has a "very long road ahead" of him.

"He has to walk that road by himself, and, most importantly, he has to want to walk that road. I will be there supporting him every step of the way," she said adding that she will "always love him."

"I don't believe love is fickle. I believe when you love someone, you are allowed to love from afar. You don't have to be with that person in order to love him," she told the magazine.

Kardashian has kept an uncharacteristically low profile since she rushed to Odom's bedside two weeks ago.  The reality star kept quiet on the subject for a week before releasing a statement on her website

The past week has been incredibly difficult. I am so thankful to family, friends and fans, who have sent nothing but prayers and well wishes to Lamar. I also want to take a moment to thank everyone at Sunrise Hospital, including the amazing doctors and nurses for their kindness and diligent work. Under their amazing care, incredible strides have been made. You can never be prepared for an experience like this, but without the outpouring of love and endless prayers that Lamar has received and the strength I was given from my loved ones, it would have been difficult to endure. Thank you for your continued support. God is great!!!

On Wednesday, the star took to Twitter to shut down haters who were criticizing her for shooting the People cover:

Puberty is rough. It's even worse when cameras document your every move because you are one of the faces of "America's first family."

Top model Kendall Jenner, who was just 11 years old when the first season of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" aired, opened up about her struggle with acne on Tuesday.

"I had such bad acne when I was younger; I remember it SO well," she posted to her pay-for-entry website and app. "I started having skin issues around the eighth or ninth grade."

Jenner, who now twerks in Balmain ads and posts topless photo after topless photo on Instagram, "wouldn't even look at people when [she] talked to them" because she "felt like such an outcast."

"I think I just got acne from being a teenager and simply growing up, which happens to SO many people," she wrote.

Jenner, who was recently named one of Time's Most Influential Teens, revealed in the promo for the upcoming 11th season of "KUWTK" that she was forced to choose sides in her parents divorce.

Try These Beauty Products To Spice Up Your Sex Life

Ever wanted to turn it up a notch in the bedroom without stepping foot in a sex shop? We have good news. New beauty brand Luz de la Riva has created a line of intimate cosmetics to help women get it going with a twist on products you already keep in the bathroom or vanity anyway.

What are "intimate cosmetics," you ask? A term coined by Luz de la Riva, intimate cosmetics refers to a new approach to beauty that emphasizes natural sensuality and sexual balance. The line of perfumes, intimate products, massage oils, lotions and goodies for bath time features pheromone-infused scents and even edible formulas (yes, you heard us right) that encourage playful interaction between you and your partner.

The products are all clinically tested and do not contain harsh chemicals like parabens, phthalates, talc or GMOs, so you can feel good about using them to get in the mood. The best part, though, is the brand's mission. Created for and by women, the line is aimed to make women feel comfortable initiating intimacy on their own terms.

Luz de la Riva, CEO and founder of Luz de la Riva Couture Intimate Cosmetics, puts it beautifully: "The core of the Luz de la Riva brand is that we believe women should not tiptoe around the delicate topic of sex -- it’s time for an open and honest conversation about what pleasures us or not." Amen.

While we are fans of the entire collection, there are a few products that really stand out. We can't stop using the Stella Massage Oil as both a fragrance and hydrating oil, and we are obsessed with the ultra glamorous Lulu 24K Edible Massage Oil for its mesmerizing 24 karat gold flecks and light fruity taste.

Ready to try the line for yourself? Shop the collection below:

Get Your Hair Appointments NOW for the Holidays!

Time for my annual warning. Get your salon appointments scheduled now for the busy Holiday Season.

Halloween is here, baby! Temperatures are dropping. Don't get left out in the cold.

Maybe all you're doing next Saturday night is walking your little goblins around the neighborhood but, if you're lucky enough to be headed to a killer Halloween party, you already need great hair. Don't rely on the costume alone to turn heads for your big entry.

Right around the corner is Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year's... This is the busy season for stylists, nail technicians and other salon professionals. Good ones are booking up fast. If you don't call soon, you may end up on a waiting list or taking an appointment at an odd time of the day or week, and that's if you're a favorite client!

Here's an option: ask for a referral. If your first choice is booked, ask her to recommend someone else. No stylist wants to lose work but if she doesn't have an opening, she will probably help you with a referral to an experienced stylist who is new in town or perhaps a young stylist without a lot of experience but great skills and talent. These people are definitely out there and they want and need the work, even at this time of year.

Here's another option: Go looking on your own. Begin by asking friends where they get their hair done and what they think of their stylists. See someone with beautiful hair? Don't be shy. Ask her where she got it styled.

Got a referral? Then move fast. Don't wait around. Get that appointment. Lock it down. Get two appointments! How you wear your hair for New Year's Eve could be completely different from the style for that Christmas party. And you'll certainly need another appointment after Thanksgiving.

Don't wait any longer. Make the calls now.

How to Update Your Winter Wardrobe for $6.99

I'm not a big mall shopper. Sure, if I'm looking for something specific and need to run to Anthropologie for a dress or Madewell for jeans, I'll go over to the mall, but I never go to browse. In fact, strolling through the mall makes me feel a little nauseous, so I try to avoid it. Because of that, if I see something I have to have I buy like 10 of them. The other day I found myself at the mall with about half an hour to kill. I couldn't find parking and ended up walking in through H&M. I looked around a little and found an amazing scarf. I looked at the price tag and saw that it was $6.99. Soon I was digging through every scarf they had finding the best ones. I called my friends asking if they needed a scarf as well. A few of the scarves were more than $6.99, but I think I bought 9 for $110. I also saved you guys time by picking out the best ones and posting them. I know. I'm such a giver!

Brad Pitt Calls Angelina Jolie A 'Decisive, Incredibly Intuitive, Knife-Sharp' And 'Sexy' Director

$

For the first time in 10 years, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are gracing the screen together in "By the Sea," a story about a couple who take a trip to France to try and salvage their troubled marriage, written and directed by Jolie.

But unlike their last on-screen appearance, this film is not an action-packed rom-com about a husband and wife's secret assassin-lives.

"'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' this is not," Pitt said in V Magazine’s Winter Issue (Issue 98), which he covers. "'By the Sea' deals with that period when the honeymoon is well over and the couple is faced with the banality of every day and the pains of the unplanned. There are no Hallmark cards that define the next chapter, or the value of a history together. So who are you?"

Pitt, who poses shirtless for a photo shoot by by Inez and Vinoodh in the issue, opens up about taking direction from his "sexy" wife, and how the concept of them working together again finally played out.

"The plan was to make something together, with complete autonomy, in the footsteps of Gena [Rowlands] and John [Cassavetes] -- and keep it a family affair. We, by our own admission, were overdue. If I'm going to work, I want to work with my wife," Pitt gushed, saying that Jolie is an incredible director. "[It's] surprising how much I enjoy the direction of my wife. She's decisive, incredibly intuitive, knife-sharp, and might I say, sexy at her post. I trust her with my life."

As for his character in the film, Pitt admitted, "I play a good drunk because I've been a good drunk," but really, all he wanted was to do justice to his wife's screenplay.

"Naturally I didn't want to fail Angie's ideas ... her words ... but really I had absolute faith we'd figure it out," he said.

These Knit Sneakers Are The Best Men's Kicks For Fall

For those of us in must-walk-a-lot cities like Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago or Manhattan, what we wear on our feet should be as functional as it is stylish.

That's why knit sneakers -- shoes woven out of thread, rather than sewn with leather pieces, which reduces waste and provides higher flexibility and better comfort -- are one of the best trends to hit the pavement this year.

Adidas started it with a pair of fully knitted soccer cleats in 2014, and now that Kanye West issued limited-edition Yeezys (as IG'd by both a Kardashian and a Jenner), it's safe to say it's a full-blown trend.

Grab some and wear them out -- before it gets too cold out and we're all forced to slosh around in snow boots until April.

Italian Men Are All The Rage With American Celebrities

By Sibilla Di Palma

From Jessica Chastain to Zoe Saldana, from singer Lana Del Rey to “mean girl” Lindsay Lohan, Italians continue enchant American celebrities. And the news about relationships and weddings that constantly crop up in tabloids prove it. Jessica Chastain and Gian Luca Passi’s love story has been in the spotlight for a while. The relationship between the American actress, a two-time Oscar nominee, and the Italian executive for Moncler is well established. The pair has been together for nearly three years after meeting at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. Popstar Lana Del Rey, 30, also has an Italian partner. The singer from New York (who has just broken into film) is dating photographer Francesco Carrozzini, the son of Vogue Italia’s editor-in- chief Franca Sozzani. The duo has been together for a year and there’s already talk about marriage.

Lindsay Lohan, the former Disney child star, also fell for a Mediterranean man. She has been dating the young businessman Mathia Milani for months. The star of the film Mean Girls and the 28-year-old San Remo native were photographed by paparazzi in Venice during a romantic vacation after Lohan had just finished her probation in the United States for drunk driving. The English actress (and naturalized U.S. citizen) Mischa Barton, 28, is dating the 26-year-old Italian actor Alan Cappelli Goetz. In some cases, these passions lead to wedding bells. Like with Zoe Saldana and the Italian artist Marco Perego. The star of Avatar secretly married the 36-year-old artist in London in 2013. He is from Salò, but has lived in the US for years. The two are mad about each other and recently welcomed twins.

However, not every Hollywood love story with Italian men has ended well. How can we forget Anne Hathaway, the beautiful star of The Devil Wears Prada and Raffaello Follieri, the wheeler-dealer from Puglia? The two lived a virtual fairy tale between yachts, private jets and luxurious penthouses on New York’s Fifth Avenue. The dream ended (along with the relationship) in 2008 when the Foggia native was arrested for fraud and money launde- ring. Not many remember that Olivia Wilde also had a past Italian love interest. On June 7, 2003, the American actress – just 19 at the time – married director and musician Tao Ruspoli. The duo did the road movie Fix in 2008, but unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce in 2011. Today, Wilde is happily engaged to Jason Sudeikis, with whom she also has a son.

#LiterarySwag Movement Makes It Stylish To Read Books

Though he might not consider himself a street style photographer, Yahdon Israel has captured a compelling collection of images of folks rocking an accessory that we can all be inspired by: a book.

Israel, a 25-year-old Master of Fine Arts student in Creative Non-Fiction at The New School, has literally snapped hundreds of candid photos of people reading. Yes, just reading -- but with an intended acknowledgment of their singular style (it kind of reminds us of the Instagram account Coffee ‘N Clothes). Ultimately Israel’s mission is to debunk the notion that you can't care about fashion while also concerning yourself with reading, writing or both.

"Why can't someone really like Thom Browne, but then also love Tom Wolfe?" Israel asked The Huffington Post.

Good question. And, of course, the answer is they can. However, it’s going to take some reprogramming of society’s tightly held stereotypes to put that type of thinking into practice -- which is why Israel created the hashtag #LiterarySwag.

"#LiterarySwag is an intersection of fashion and literature to make literature more accessible to people that don't like to read,” Israel explained.

The Brooklyn native is spreading that message by encouraging people to add the hashtag to pictures of themselves and others with a book or in the act of reading. And to be clear, this is not about celebrating flashy-dressed folks who like to read -- the images don’t always have to be of stylish people who are reading. Rather, the subject simply has to have a book in-hand while projecting his or her own personal style (eye-catching or not).

The idea for the hashtag-turned-movement was sparked almost a year and a half ago when Israel spotted a particularly stylish teenager on the train reading "To Kill A Mockingbird.” He secretly snapped a picture of the kid, uploaded it to Instagram, captioned it #LiterarySwag, and the rest is history.

Israel is so dedicated to his mission that he has even created an annual cash-reward competition awarding $1,500 of his own money to anyone who posts the most photos of people reading and includes his hashtag.

“This is actually money out of my student loans,” Israel told HuffPost. “But I see it as investment into this larger thing.”

And as of late, that “thing,” or what Israel calls the “literary lifestyle,” has also morphed into more than just photos. Nine months ago Israel started producing 15-second Instagram videos in which he features notable names in the literary world -- and beyond -- rattling off three of their favorite writers, as well as three of their favorite fashion designers or clothing brands.

“It’s like those E! television shows where they do the red carpet and ask celebrities what their wearing. I thought, 'What if I did that for writers?'” Israel explained.

The writers, designers, musicians, and influencers that he has captured thus far read like a who's who list, including people like Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Diaz who digs Saucony, “Grey’s Anatomy” actor Jesse Williams who appreciates Givenchy, NBCC award-winning poet Claudine Rankine, who’s a fan of Jil Sander, and the most talked-about author of the moment, Ta-Nehisi Coates, who likes Cole Haan.

Israel’s dreams for the #LiterarySwag movement are lofty. He hopes to do for literature what Fab 5 Freddy did for hip-hop -- which means becoming a cultural pioneer that opens the door into a world that is unknown or unexplored by a significant portion of the population.

"I want to be the person who in this culture becomes identified with literature, insofar as you trust my taste to the point that I can help make books, reading and literary culture popular -- but doing it through fashion. So it's literature as style."

We’d say he’s well on his way. Check out some of his #LiterarySwag videos below and don’t forget to make sure your book is showing in your next OOTD photo...and tag it #LiterarySwag!

P.S. And if you're curious, Israel's personal #LiterarySwag rundown is: James Baldwin, Hilton Als, Maya Angelou. Ralph Lauren, Maison Margiela, Thom Browne.

Who Wants a Fat Lip? Everyone, Apparently

It's hard to find a celebrity or supermodel these days who isn't sporting a couple of big fat lips on her face. In most cases, those big puffy lips aren't the lips she was not born with. Those lips were purchased at great cost and considerable pain. And why? Apparently because they look youthful or sexy or something like that.

I think they look like they hurt. Anyone who's had a swollen lip knows that swollen body parts are painful. But even if the pain diminishes and the skin stretches over time to accommodate the size of the puffy lips, it is going to be painful to have the procedure again in six months when the hyaluronic acid has gone wherever it goes when it leaves the lip area.

And where does the stuff go when it makes its way out of your lips after half a year? Maybe it gets absorbed into your blood stream and leaves the body the same way as other liquid waste? On the other hand, maybe it goes directly to your nose and gives you a big puffy nose. But apparently the desirability of big lips does not also apply to big noses these days. Perhaps that's because a big nose would compete with the big lips diminishing the relative size of the lips and thus making the investment in the big lips a giant waste of time and money. Pure speculation, on my part.

I don't know when the cult of the big body part started in this country, but I have read that stout men and women were in vogue during the depression because a heavy girth indicated that you had enough to eat and were therefore employed, or wealthy, during lean times. Decades later, after World War II, thin waists and big breasts were the beauty standard. Eventually, the cult of the big worked its way up to the lips in the 1990s and down to the butt more recently.

I actually don't understand the lure of the big butt, but then again, I am not a man. There are many things I don't understand because I am not a man. But I do know that it is really hard for most women to find pants that fit and look flattering, so it must be even harder for women who have a Kim Kardashian-sized butt and slender waist. I wouldn't wish that on anyone so clearly I'm not a man.

Apparently the fashion favoring big features has not made its way to the hands or feet yet. And the cult of the big may never make its way to the stomach area. But if it does, look out celebrities and supermodels! There will be a freaking ton of us nipping at your heels. Your days will be so numbered. No one will be admiring your puffy lips when they catch sight our big bay windows. No one. Trust me. Game over, skinny girls.

Did James Franco Really Tattoo A Portrait Of Emma Watson On His Neck?

Everyone throws shade at the Kardashians for their attention-grabbing Instagram posts, but let us not forget about one of the original social media narcissists, James Franco.

"The Interview" actor posted a photo of himself shirtless (of course) with some new ink on Wednesday. A rather large portrait of star Emma Watson covering his neck is the most notable addition.

Franco captioned the photo, "I heart Hermione," the character Watson portrayed on screen for eight "Harry Potter" films.

Although getting a neck tattoo of Hermione Granger wouldn't be the strangest thing Franco has done for "likes," it turned out to be a hoax.

Cheyenne Randall, tagged as @indiangiver in Franco's post, is a tattoo artist and Photoshop whiz. On Instagram, he is known for photoshopping fake body art onto pictures of celebrities. Check out this doctored image of Cara Delevingne.

We suspect that Watson will take the news rather well, considering the two starred in the star-studded comedy "This is the End" together.

If not, Franco better watch out because we've seen the way she wields an ax

Dad Shows Daughters They Are #MoreThanCute In Empowering Halloween Campaign

An awesome Halloween costume movement is inspiring young girls to be whatever they want to be.

Dad and HuffPost blogger John Marcotte launched the #MoreThanCute campaign after feeling troubled by the discrepancy between costumes marketed for girls and boys.

"When choosing a costume, boys are told they can be anything they want: brave, scary, smart, adventurous and more," Marcotte wrote on the website for his girls' empowerment organization, Heroic Girls. "The costumes designed for girls, on the other hand, tell them that no matter what they aspire to be, the only thing that society truly values is that they look 'cute,'" he added, noting that even non-princess character costumes for girls tend to include "a tutu and a magic fairy wand."

"I believe a direct line can be drawn from the aisle that tells little girls to focus on appearance and being 'cute' to the aisle that tells adult women that being 'sexy' is all that society values," he continued.

To combat these harmful messages, Marcotte is encouraging parents to let their daughters "dream big" and pursue their unlimited potential in the Halloween costume realm. The dad is also asking parents to share photos of their little girls in costumes that are #MoreThanCute on social media.

The results have been awesomely fierce -- with mini sports stars, astronauts, superheroes, doctors and more.

Marcotte wrote that he hopes these costumes can teach young girls that "even though they are adorable,"  their appearance is not the only thing that society values,  and their dreams should extend beyond being "cute."

"We value girls because of their strength, their creativity, their intelligence and their ambition," he added. "Together we will show the world that while we we think our daughters are beautiful, that is not the most important metric by which we value them."

Keep scrolling and check out the #MoreThanCute hashtag on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for a sample of these awesome costumes.
