With the return of the '70s in fashion comes suede -- and lots of it. Here, how supermodels like Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, and Herieth Paul wear the retro-chic material.

Above, Emily Ratajkowski wears suede from head-to-toe with a tan button-up dress.

Live Your Life Like No One Gives a Flip

0

Because the reality is that they really don't.

When you're overweight, it can be a very uncomfortable thing to move through the public spaces of your life. Unlike other types of qualities you may not like about yourself, being overweight is one that is plainly visible to everyone. So you tend to feel very exposed and vulnerable in situations where you feel "on display."

Certainly, it's possible to feel this way as a non-overweight person. I'm not claiming overweight people corner the market on these feelings--if you have acne, a bad scar, skin discoloration, a missing or deformed limb, or some other sort of physical condition that causes you to appear differently to those around you, then you can probably identify with this sense of discomfort and the associated internal dialogue that goes along with it.

I can't speak from experience on other types of discomfort with appearance, so I'll allow you to substitute your own version of inner being nasty zingers for the ones I'm listing here, as needed. These are the things that I once imagined others were thinking about me, and still occasionally do, moving through the public spaces of my life.

Wow, she is fat.
She is a really, really, big girl.
Can you believe she's wearing those pants?
That skirt is showing way too much of her HUMUNGOUS thighs.
Her fat rolls are hanging out over her tights, what a slob!
Who told her that outfit looked GOOD on her?
Who does she think she is?
Nobody should be allowed to walk out of the house like that.
Really, you're eating that? When you look the way that you do?
Don't you think you should leave that stuff for the skinny people, who can afford to eat it?
What is WRONG with her? Why can't she control herself?
Walk away from the dessert table, Honey.
She is disgusting.
I can't even look at that.

This list represents the types of thoughts I was CONVINCED everyone around me was thinking when they looked at me for most of my life. It wasn't just a passive thing--these thoughts played on loop in my head in a way that profoundly affected my behavior and my feelings about myself. I would take different routes through the dining hall in college in order to avoid being seen by certain groups of people. I would hide my eating from my coworkers and roommates. I would deny myself meal breaks and proper nutrition to avoid having to be visible to those around me.

But then one day, I realized something. I was deeply immersed in my daily inner monologue about what to eat for lunch. Should I get up and take a break to get lunch at all? What would my coworkers think about me based on my food choices? And about how I wanted to find an empty call room at the office to eat in because I was uncomfortable with people watching me eat. A little voice inside, which speaks up occasionally when I'm on the verge of completely losing touch with reality, piped in:

"You need to get over yourself. They're way too busy worrying about themselves to care about what you are or aren't eating, or how you're eating it and when. So you don't need to worry so much about what they're going to think. Nobody really cares. And if they do, eff them."

Nobody cares! What a liberating realization!

Nobody is actually staring at you, and if they are it isn't because they're deeply invested in your situation. People don't make hurtful judgments because of how deeply they care. At least not passive, shallow judgments like the ones enumerated above. If they are actually saying and thinking thoughts like that at all, it's because they have dehumanized the subject and literally don't care at all how or if those thoughts, words, and statements impact that "thing."

But it's more likely that no one is actually saying or thinking anything negative. If it seems like someone is mean mugging you in the cafeteria line, they are probably thinking something like, "Wow, blue sweater," (because they happen to like blue), or "I wish I had some Peanut M&M's right now," (because you're standing in front of the candy display next to the register), or "I forgot to send that email to Karen" (and they aren't really looking at you, but through you).

All of this is great news for you! One of the big drawbacks to not being comfortable in your body, whatever state it happens to be in, is that you spend a lot more time drawn into your own neurosis than you do operating in the realm of reality. When your inner being is a mall cop on a power trip that is ready to pull the trigger at the slightest indication of danger, real or imagined, you become a lot less effective at living to your full potential and spend a lot of time fighting unseen (and sometimes non-existent) enemies.

If you can really face your insecurities and acknowledge that you're a lot better off in the world than you sometimes allow yourself to believe, you begin to free up all of the energy you used to expend caring about what others think and redirect that energy into doing great work, whatever that happens to be for you. When I stopped dodging the voices in my head, I was able to recognize opportunity's knock. As I began to answer those knocks, things cracked open for me in major ways, creatively, financially, romantically, and intellectually.

2015-10-30-1446168454-6648314-1_MG_08951RT.jpg

This photo, taken by Justin Clynes with hair and make-up by Lauren O'Leary, was taken when I was completely unposed, changing outfits between looks--further proof that sometimes the best things befall you when you aren't trying to impress anyone!

So go ahead. Have the side of fries you're secretly jonesing for, wear the crop top, sport your prosthetic leg in a pair of cargo shorts, or skip the mineral make-up today. Just worry about doing amazing things instead of caring if other people are going to judge your choices. In those moments when you start to feel self-conscious, remind yourself that no one really gives a flip, so why not just be you?

The 'Ugly' Skirt That Victoria Beckham Wears, And You Should Too

0
0

The trumpet skirt is a stylish piece that's come in and out of fashion since the Victorian era, and it's about time you tried it.

The silhouette, which is fitted around the hips and waist with a flared hem, is a popular look for bridal gowns. Believe it or not, the skirt's style played a role in simplifying women's wear in the 1890s, which went from huge petticoats and corsets to more athletic and moveable clothing.

Compared to other skirts, it seems like this particular option could seem outdated and to be honest, a little ugly. But if there's anything we've learned from Birkenstocks and culottes, it's that one woman's trash is another woman's treasure.

When Vogue.com featured designer Victoria Beckham wearing a version of the trumpet skirt, we knew something was up. Then we remembered that Duchess Kate donned an ornate version of the cut with a floral Erdem gown, so we immediately wanted to get one of these babies in our hands.

Oh yeah, and remember when Beyoncé rocked one back in May? Oh yeah.

A photo posted by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

Why are we so desperate to wear one, you ask? Like flared jeans, the movement of the skirt makes a stunning sartorial statement. Also, depending on preference of fit and length, a belled skirt accommodates different shapes and sizes with its maxi, midi and mini variations.

To get you into the fall trumpet spirit, here are some ways to wear the skirt of the season.

Shop the trumpet skirt:

Top from left to right: Black plaid mini skirt, $16; Mango skirt, $70

Bottom from  left to right: Uniqlo blue knee length skirt, $60; Zara black flared skirt, $50; Carven skirt, $194; Cameo calf length black skirt, $185

If you don't know -- now you know Danielle Bernstein!

She is female fashion blogger who started out as a street blogger and now has a full fledged multifigure company. On October 30th weWoreWhat launched a partnering with Century 21, curating a shop for the historic bargain store this weekend in New York City.
Bernstein who is under 24, is now being paid anywhere from $5,000 to now over $15,000 + for a single piece of sponsored content on instagram. She chats with me on how she did it and what continually motivates her.

MM When you started out as a street blogger, was is just for fun on social media?

DB WeWoreWhat started as a street style blog. I picked up a camera, taught myself how to use it and started to go around the city and FIT taking pictures of girls' outfits.

MM When did you realize this fun is evolving into a career?

DB After 6 months, I turned the camera around on myself, and realized that my personal style was really resonating with my readers and it kind of grew from that point on.

MM What are the steps you feel, led to building a large following of over 1.3million?

DB My following is a product of organic growth and staying true to my brand. My followers can trust whatever I promote, which has been extremely important.

MM Who do you keep around you on your team?

DB I have my photographer, a project manager and an intern on my team along with my agents at Next.

MM What advice would you pass to a style blogger just starting out Today?

DB Use proper hashtags that are specific to your photo, high-res images that are filtered consistently with your feed, and create some sort of editorial calendar that you stick to as much as possible.

MM You have said, "that you view your blog more as a service for ladies", how do you plan to continually evolve this service?

DB Right now, my blog is expanding to home, music and other exciting collaborations that you will see soon enough.

M O T I V A T I O N

When C21 asked me to curate a shop for them, I was overly excited. The idea of shopping discount stores sometimes has negative connotations, which is why I was eager to show people the amazing really cool stuff you can find (as long as you really look)

Last week we launched a new round up of our favorite things on the Internet, to send you off into the weekend with a concise reading list. Weekends are for unplugging, not spending endless hours online trying to catch up on the week's news and happenings.

Catch up quickly and then take your weekend back. And get extra comfortable, because on Sunday, you get an extra hour of YOU time. Thanks, daylight saving time

FIRST THINGS FIRST: While you're indulging in everything spooky this weekend, dive into HuffPost's multimedia experience, The Flip Side Of Fear. It's time to face your fears and overcome -- and then go eat all the candy, because you earned it.

READ:  If you take in one piece of food writing this weekend, make it "Edna Lewis And The Black Roots Of American Cooking" by the one and only Francis Lam.

REMINISCE: Remember when Ugg boots came out and everyone assumed they were just another fad? Read about why this ugly duckling is still going strong in Racked's "The Inescapable, Immortal Ugg."

GET STARTED ON: "Fates And Furies," by Lauren Groff. Seth Meyers is into it, and you will be too.

FOLLOW:  Sick of food porn and meticulously placed cups of tea next to that pretty piece of toast? Follow Undressed, a new series on Instagram capturing the raw moments in restaurants and kitchens. They're the honest and unscripted reasons the food industry is so compelling.

WEAR: Put your metallic shoes on this weekend and instantly upgrade your look.

WATCH: The New York City Marathon, of course! It's on Sunday, and whether you're watching in person or not, be sure to cheer loudly and be part of that "amazing roar."

VISIT: Brooklyn's new Museum Of Food And Drink, which officially opened this week. Trust us, it's "not just for foodies." Or hipsters.

SPEND TIME WITH: Writer Ramona Emerson's essay on what she learned from moving back in with her parents. It hits all the right notes.

LISTEN TO: Terry Gross interview Gloria Steinem on "Fresh Air." Need we say anything more?

CONSIDER: The "Life Of An Apple Picker" in NPR's moving exposé.

CELEBRATE: And with that, we leave you "10 Of The Cutest Animal Halloween Costumes."

Cheers!

Kylie Jenner took a selfie wearing a $39 sports bra, Kendall rocked a $55 T-shirt and Kourtney wore a sheer black tank for under $40. We finally think we can keep up with the Kardashians.

5 Makeup Looks For A Night Out That Don't Involve Red Lipstick

0

Red lipstick has been our go-to color when getting ready for a night out. There are always a few tubes lying around our vanities, and the shade completes every outfit we manage to pull together when we're crunched for time. But we're starting to get bored of wearing red lips.

So we went straight to Instagram for new going-out makeup inspiration and discovered these five unconventional yet glamorous looks. From beauty vlogger Ellarie's electric green under-eye liner to makeup artist Amanda Kokoeva's matte berry lips, you'll probably retire your favorite red lipstick after trying these ideas.

Kylie Jenner And Nicky Hilton Wore Some Pretty Offensive Halloween Costumes This Year

0
0

Well, there's always someone who shows up to a Halloween party in a racist or offensive costume -- this year it was Kylie Jenner and Nicky Hilton.

On Saturday, Jenner shared a video of herself decked out in her "Eskimo" costume that she wore to a party on Friday night. Never mind the fact that "Eskimo" is generally considered a slur, the Inuit and Alaska Natives are real people, not costumes.

While the 18-year-old later switched up the caption on another photo to "Snow Princess," we're not buying it.  Someone probably should have told Jenner she would have been better off dressing as the vampire zombie she plays in Tyga's "Dope'd Up" video.

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Meanwhile, Nicky Hilton apparently learned nothing from the time her sister Paris attended a Halloween party at the Playboy mansion dressed as a "sexy Indian." The younger Hilton sister also doesn't seem to care that Native Americans and First Nations are real people with a real culture and therfore not a costume, because she turned up to the Casamigos Tequila Halloween Party on Friday night in this:

For more racist Halloween costumes you'll want to avoid this year, next year and all future Halloween parties, click here if you don't have the common sense not to offend people already.

The Rise Of Genderless Fashion

0
0
Androgyny, A-gender, genderless, gender neutral, gender blending - you may have heard these buzzwords circulating the fashion ether recently. As a woman working in menswear for nearly two decades, I inherently incorporate androgynous style into my own personal look, pushing myself to flirt with boundaries and experiment with new trends. I love rocking a tailored button down and slouchy jean, but more and more, I've noticed the lines (or threads) of fashion are being blurred.

Androgyny isn't just about taking a cue from the boys anymore. Designers are retiring from gender norms that have dominated the industry for years. Men are wearing women's clothes and women are wearing men's clothes. For as much as I am devoted to menswear, I love witnessing this shift in public perspective of genderless fashion. The fashion industry and the way we dress is becoming fluid --leaving consumers and retailers asking the question: is genderless fashion here to stay, or is it just a fad?

From the runway to editorial campaigns to street style, the genderless dress code is becoming a mainstay for designers. The New York Times described New York Fashion Week as a "gender blur," in June. Even corporate giants like Target are responding to the gender neutrality movement by removing gender-based signage from the floors of their stores. Emerging brands like Harbison, Public School and Hood By Air are pushing the boundaries by encouraging men and women to wear clothing with silhouettes that aren't exclusive to gender, but instead embrace both the masculine and feminine sides of fashion.

What excites me most about this trend is seeing the way it trickles down into menswear, and being able to provide a stage for designers at Liberty Fairs to showcase and make a bold statement to the industry. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is discovering and curating the next generation of innovative and forward thinking designers to welcome into the Liberty Fairs family. Our hearts beat to the sound of freedom and equality in fashion and beyond. While the traditional perception of what is masculine or feminine still holds strong roots in the retail industry, it's undeniable that the rise of genderless fashion is just getting started.

Heidi Klum's Jessica Rabbit Halloween Costume Is Pretty Incredible

The queen of Halloween certainly didn't disappoint this year.

Heidi Klum, who teased earlier that her Halloween costume would be "every male's fantasy," turned heads in a very elaborate Jessica Rabbit costume, complete with prosthetics that gave her a cartoonish hourglass figure.

The model posed for photos as she served as host of her annual Halloween bash in New York on Saturday:

Other celebrities in attendance included Gigi Hadid, who dressed up as Sandy from "Grease," and Emily Ratajkowski, who was a very convincing Marge Simpson:

Gotta love when people are down to go all out for Halloween.

Leave It To Kim Kardashian To Dress Up Like Kim Kardashian For Halloween

We can always count on Kim Kardashian to bring her A-game come Halloween, but this year she took things to a level that only she could reach by dressing up like herself.

That's right, the reality TV queen dressed up as herself circa the 2013 Met Gala. Remember that head-to-toe floral number complete with attached gloves? Well, she brought it out for round two

"I think I nailed the Kim K costume!," the 35-year-old wrote alongside one of the photos she shared on Instagram.

We can't argue with that.

Kylie Jenner Channels Her Inner Xena Warrior Princess With Sexy Halloween Costume

After donning a questionable furry white "Eskimo"/snow princess costume Friday night, Kylie Jenner continued the Halloween festivities with a look that was a little more badass.

On Saturday night, the 18-year-old channeled her inner Xena warrior princess with a sexy gladiator-inspired ensemble. The costume consisted of an embellished bra top, black and gold leather shoulder caps, a black skirt with hip-high slits (pretty much a floor-length loin cloth) and of course, a sword.

The reality star traded in her bob hairstyle for an extra long ponytail, which she dubbed "40 inches of fun" in a Snapchat video. And she even had her own crew of ninjas, obviously.

Not only did Halloween bring us some great celebrity costumes, it also gave us a "High School Musical" reunion.

That's right, a few former Wildcats, including Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Monique Coleman and Corbin Bleu, were in the house for Hudgens' "Halloween in Wonderland" party. Lucky for us, there are plenty of photos of our favorite musical high schoolers decked out in costumes.

BFFs Hudgens and Tisdale went as Alice and the Queen of Hearts, while Coleman rocked an all-plaid ensemble as Dionne from "Clueless." As if. And Bleu appears to have dressed up as Lenny Kravitz

Selena Gomez was pretty in pink at the Annual Hollywood Film Awards Sunday night in Beverly Hills.

Gomez wore a low-cut pastel gown for the event held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. She was there to present Amy Schumer with the the Hollywood Comedy Award, and thanked the comedian for being inspirational.

"Amy, you've inspired me to not take myself too seriously when I've sat on my couch endlessly, kind of depressed about certain things," she said. "You've constantly made me feel like a badass, even though most of the time I'm not. You say the things I wish I could say and you never, ever make me feel bad for anything that I do in my personal life, even though you don't know me, so it's fine."

Move over, Kendall and Gigi. There's a surprisingly awesome new member of the Balmain army in town.

Jane Fonda ruled the red carpet at the 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards Sunday night in an all-white couture look from the fashion house's spring/summer 2016 collection. Staying true to her suit-loving heart, the 77-year-old opted for exposing her midriff in a mesh bodysuit underneath a cropped blazer and ruffled pants.

The actress, who took home the "Hollywood Supporting Actress" award for her role in the upcoming film "Youth," calls her relationship with fashion "strained, but looks pretty at ease in this chic ensemble.

With the rest of awards season swiftly approaching, we can't wait to see what other awesome looks Fonda steps out in. For now, excuse us while we spend the rest of the day attempting to achieve those abs

Allison Williams guest edits the December/January issue of harper by Harper's Bazaar and goes topless inside the editorial.

The "Girls" star posed in denim and leather pants for the casual shots. She opened up about her personal style ("easy, timeless, and rustic preppy") and her inability to cook ("I’m perpetually worried that the meat is going to poison everyone").

On Monday, she shared why she is proud of the shoot in an Instagram post

One more. I am particularly proud of this one. For my whole life until 2 years ago, I was super self-conscious about my stomach. I dreaded bikini season. I kept it covered. Boyfriends weren't allowed to touch it. No amount of crunches seemed to strengthen it. Then I met @ilariacavagna who introduced me to the magic and focus of Pilates. I have never felt stronger, healthier, more focused, or more feminine. Now, I love my stomach because it keeps me grounded to my core. Here's to proving yourself wrong.

Head over to Harper's Bazaar for more.
