Men's Hair Rocks Country Music Awards; Women Keep It Soft, Natural

$

Just as I thought, the women on the red carpet at the Country Music Association Awards went with subtle, soft colors and natural layering. Carrie Underwood was beautifully emblematic of this strong trend with her baby blonde locks and big, open waves.

But the men... wow! This is where the action and variety were at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Chase Bryant was rockin' his mohawk. Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line was working a great David Bowie look. Lots of guys had great beards, namely Keifer Thompson of Thompson Square, Chris Young, and John Carter Cash.

Of course, at the CMAs, guys wore cowboy hats, including Garth Brooks, Clay Walker, and Dustin Lynch. Granger Smith and Kane Brown donned baseball-style caps.

The men seemed to make more of a statement with hair than the women this year with more variety and looks, long hair, short hair, mohawks and classic cuts, too. Steve Martin showed us again how great gray hair can look on a guy.

The women's hair was gorgeous, but we're still waiting for a big shift in trends. There were so many blondes at this event, including Jewel and Kellie Pickler. Jewel and Underwood wore their blonde color with a dark base. Miranda Lambert wore hers with some fuchsia-blush on the ends, very subtle, soft blending.

Karen Fairchild and Kacey Musgraves were among the dark brunettes, very nearly single tone coloring, a bold, beautiful look.

What so many had in common was the single-tone coloring or coloring with very subtle highlights and transitions. What I wasn't expecting was an ombre, but young singer Danielle Bradbery pulled it off beautifully, brunette to blonde ends, with a pretty dramatic transition at the shoulders.

I love to watch the hair at the CMAs because these styles often become trendsetters. The CMAs come in the fall, right as the Holiday season is getting started, a time when we're naturally transitioning to fall-winter colors and we see a lot of new strong trends emerge.

Cheers to the cowboys and cowgirls! As always, be open to change.

Kiernan Shipka is 16!

The "Mad Men" star has grown up before our eyes not only on screen, but on the red carpet as well.

A mainstay on the best-dressed list, Shipka has emerged as a style star thanks in part to a penchant for fun, patterned dresses and an undying love of collars.

While Shipka once revealed that her character's changing outfits offer "a history lesson," Shipka's own style evolution has a lesson of its own -- when something works, stick with it.

In honor of the actress' 16th birthday on Nov. 10, we took a look way back at some of her best looks over the (very few) years.

Jennifer Lawrence Manages To Fall On The Red Carpet Yet Again

Oh, Jennifer Lawrence. The gloriously clumsy star managed to trip on the red carpet yet again.

On Tuesday, the 25-year-old actress took a tumble on the red carpet at the Madrid premiere of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2." From fan-shot video that was shared on Twitter, it appears that her heels got the better of her when the train on her gown became stuck underneath.

Of course, Lawrence is now a pro at making a swift recovery, having  tripped up the stairs at the 2013 Oscars while walking to the stage to accept the award for Best Actress. The star defied all odds when she fell again at the award show the following year, making us wonder if she should consider skipping the stilettos all together.

Having suffered through those mishaps before, Lawrence had no problem pulling herself together to pose for photographers in one of the best looks she's worn throughout her whirlwind of premieres over the last few days.  Despite her apparent clumsiness, Lawrence still looked like a total movie star in a black Ralph Lauren gown with a plunging neckline.

What's more, the fall didn't even faze the actress, who is apparently "used to it," according to "Hunger Games" producer Nina Jacobson.

Burt Reynolds Says His Mustache Got Him 'Better Parts And Better Ladies'

For those who haven't dived into Burt Reynolds' oeuvre, let us tell you two things: Reynolds was a major hottie in the '70s and he's the reason why your mom has a thing for mustaches.

"The Longest Yard" star, whose memoir But Enough About Me comes out Nov. 17, spoke to People about the impact his famous facial hair has had on his career and personal life.

"After I grew it, I got better parts and better ladies," he told People

The 79-year old also revealed that he has no plans to shave his star-making 'stache any time soon. "I think I'd really miss it," he said. "I know that sounds silly but I would."

Reynolds, who started acting in the 1950s and has appeared in over 170 projects, might have been a little too good with the ladies back in the day. In a recent Vanity Fair interview, where he opens up about his loves, losses and money struggles, Reynolds admitted that "women" were the one thing that cost him the most.

The actor also called Sally Field, his "Smoky and the Bandit" co-star and on-and-off-again girlfriend, the "love of [his] life."

"I miss her terribly,” he told Vanity Fair. “Even now, it’s hard on me. I don’t know why I was so stupid. Men are like that, you know. You find the perfect person, and then you do everything you can to screw it up.”

We think we already know Sally Field's response.

Keep rockin' that 'stache, Burt.

This Video Proves That Anyone Can Wear Dark Lipstick

From pale to deep skin tones, there's a dark lippie for everyone. Brown, purples and reds are great colors that can be tailored to an individual's preference and emotions. For example, Popsugar reporter Kirbie Johnson explains that a dark red can give a sultry gal a boost, while a deep plum adds a little rock and roll edge to any look.

That said, there are ways to pair shades with your undertones. See how you can match colors to your specific undertone in the Popsugar video below.

The great thing about lipstick is that colors can be mixed and matched to achieve any desired shade. Try building upon lighter colors with different glosses and finishes if you're not ready for a strikingly dark hue. HuffPost Live makeup artist Kari Bauce assures that the video's layering technique will allow you to play around with color and texture to fit your unique look.

Watch This Badass Victoria's Secret Model Shut Down A Sexist Question

Magdalena Frackowiak was not impressed by sexist backstage questions at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

A TMZ reporter gained behind-the-scenes access at the star-studded show, which featured supermodels like Kendall Jenner, Adriana Lima and Joan Smalls. But the only question he asked them was, "What are you most excited about eating after this show?"

Yes, ask the models what they can't wait to eat, because of course models don't eat, right? Super original.

While most of the models backstage awkwardly smiled and tried to answer the question as best as they could, Polish model Frackowiak was having none of it.

"What? Not with these kinds of questions. This is stupid," Frackowiak said. "Ask smart questions, not 'eating after the show.' You make me look like an idiot."

When the reporter, off camera, insisted that his question wasn't intended to play into stereotypes about models, Frackowiak cut him off.

"Yeah, but it seems like I'm starving myself and I can't wait for the show to end to eat."

Much can be said about the unrealistic beauty standards set by the fashion industry, but kudos to Frackowiak for refusing to perpetuate a harmful and sexist stereotype. Remember, TMZ, #AskHerMore

Christie Brinkley Is 'Timeless' In A White Low-Cut Mini-Dress

Christie Brinkley, we're begging you, please, teach us your ways

At 61 years old and with style to rival celebrities 30 years her junior, Brinkley looks better than ever. That notion rang especially true on Tuesday, when the "uptown girl" stopped by the "Today" show in a white low-cut mini blazer dress and Louboutin pumps.

Promoting her new book "Timeless Beauty: Over 100 Tips, Secrets and Shortcuts to Looking Great," Brinkley slipped into yet another white dress later in the day for a book signing. She wore the form-fitting long-sleeve number with the same black pumps and, of course, kept her book in tow.

She continued the color scheme Wednesday for yet another appearance on "The Wendy Williams Show," slicing that old no-white-after-Labor Day rule to shreds.

We can't decide which look we like best, but one thing's for sure: white is this woman's color.

The editors here at HuffPost Lifestyle have remained loyal to a few of the best mascaras. While we don't mind paying extra for the cult classic Dior DiorShow Blackout, we're also partial to more affordable ones like CoverGirl's LashBlast line, which gives any luxury brand stiff competition.

If you're shopping for a new mascara, keep reading to learn about the tubes our editors swear by.

This Is Fall's Hottest Red Carpet Dress

In fashion, as is in life, history has a tendency to repeat itself. It just usually doesn't happen this many times on the red carpet.

Enter this geometric Mugler dress from the brand's spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection, which we first spotted on Naomie Harris at the "Spectre" after party in London:

Following in her fashionable footsteps were Selena Gomez and Martha Hunt, who each showed up in a variation of the same look at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show after party in New York Tuesday night.

Gomez opted for a top and skirt ensemble:

While Hunt played it a bit safer in a slightly less revealing version of the dress:

Each lady rocked this trendy design in her own fashion, but it's clear that any way you slice it, cutouts are, well, the new cutouts.

Bloomingdale’s Apologizes For Super Creepy Holiday Ad

Bloomingdale's just made a pretty glaring mistake.

Yesterday, an Imgur user posted a photo of an ad from Bloomingdale's new holiday catalog that is troublingly suggestive of a date rape scenario. The department store's ad shows a woman laughing with a man looking at her. In between the models the advertisement reads: "Spike your best friend's eggnog when they're not looking."

Um... no.

Bloomingdale's apologized in a statement to Tech Insider yesterday. "In reflection of recent feedback, the copy we used in our recent catalog was inappropriate and in poor taste. Bloomingdales' sincerely apologizes for this error in judgment," a Bloomingdale's representative told Tech Insider

The brand also tweeted an apology:

Despite Bloomingdale's apology, Twitter users continued to call out the brand, tweeting their thoughts about the advertisement using the hashtag #Bloomingdales.

To sum it up: Don't spike anyone's drink ever and definitely don't joke about it in an advertising campaign.

REI CEO Responds To Former Employee's Complaints In Reddit AMA

$

REI CEO Jerry Stritzke responded this week to complaints from a former employee that the company's emphasis on selling customer memberships punished workers who didn't sell enough.

In a reddit "Ask Me Anything" on Tuesday, Stritzke made himself available for questions following REI's recent announcement that its workers will have the day off on Black Friday. The company tweeted an invitation to commenters to participate in the conversation on reddit.

But the AMA took a turn after reddit user "annonemp," who claimed to be a former REI employee, criticized the company for focusing too heavily on whether its workers sold enough memberships. REI memberships cost $20 and give customers special benefits and discounts.

The commenter claimed REI slashed his or her hours for not selling enough memberships and didn't honor its offer to place the employee at a store in a different city:

I had my hours cut from 30 hours a week to less than 10 because I did not sell enough memberships. Additionally, I was not allowed to pick up shifts from people that didn’t want to work because I did not sell enough memberships. Similar things happened to some of my most authentically qualified co-workers as well. Finally, after moving across the country with the assurance of a transfer, I was told by the store in the new city that I did not sell enough memberships and therefore they did not have any room on the payroll for me. I was not even given the courtesy of an interview with the store to assess any of my other skills, just a brief email wishing me good luck. I lost my health insurance, a source of much needed income, and any potential co-worker friends in a new city where I knew no one.

"I fully understand the need to hold employees to a high standard, but why is the approach so unbalanced?" the commenter asked. Read the full comment here.

Stritzke replied to "annonemp" on Wednesday, saying the company "may have lost sight of the bigger picture."

The truth is that we should have been doing a better job sharing what makes the co-op special. We should have a "pull" model (people want to join because they believe in our mission and they love the experience), not a "push" model when it comes to the co-op. And the most important thing is that our employees in our stores know that their skill, deep outdoor knowledge and customer service are the things that matter above everything. To be clear, that is how our people should be measured. I feel like your story represents a measure of individual performance taken to an extreme and I am committed to understanding what happened. I appreciate you sharing your story and I assure you that we are looking into how we are using this measure. Good conversation.

Read Stritzke's full comment here.

REI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the exchange.

Ciara On Being A Mom, White House Visits And Using Her Platform For Good

$
0
0

Ciara is a woman of many talents.

She's a Grammy-award winning singer, songwriter, actress and incredible dancer (which you'd know if you'd seen any of her countless music videos).

The 30-year-old, known for her hits like "Goodies," "Ride," and "I Bet," recently released her sixth album, "Jackie," which she'll continue touring for in Spring 2016. Ciara is also a mother to Future, who was born in 2014.

The new mom found time in her busy schedule to speak with The Huffington Post about her new partnership with Unilever, visits to the White House and her hardest music videos to film.

I'm so excited to speak with you about your Unilever "Share a Meal" campaign.

Oh, my goodness, I'm so excited! Campaigns like this, they really speak to my heart. I get excited because it's a chance to really make a difference. In this case, we're helping to provide a meal for a child that doesn't have one. When you think about that, that's heartbreaking. As a mom, I can't imagine if my child didn't have a meal to eat. To be a part of a campaign like this, it's the reason that I do what I do.

The platform that we are given as entertainers is a platform to inspire and move millions of people. And you have to think about how far your voice stretches. To me, my payoff is to use my voice in a more important and valuable way.

You do have such a following, and with something like this, you could make an incredible difference around the holiday season.

Yeah! It'll make you feel good! [The holidays] are a time of giving, a time of love, a time of family -- people can challenge their family members to be a part of this. We're engaging in social media in a way like never before. So why not all of us team up together and rally each other to make a difference? Provide a meal for the child that doesn't have one.

Amazing! I saw that you were at the White House recently -- is there anything you can tell us about that experience that changed you or inspired you?

You know what? It's so funny. I've actually seen the First Lady a few times this year, which has been an awesome experience -- and a very inspiring one. To see the power of her and the President's love is amazing. To see them in a room is awesome, it's inspiring. And then, of course, to be a part of First Lady's amazing campaign "Reach Higher" and also her newest campaign, "Better Make Room."

Again, it's one of those opportunities where you're using the power of your celebrity in a way to highlight the kids who are trying to reach higher and achieve their goals. Kids are our future. Campaigns like this make me excited because again, as a mom, I think of my son.

In regard to your son and other celebrity moms, what kind of parenting advice do you exchange with your friend, Kim Kardashian?

Well you know, it's so funny -- it's actually been a little while since she and I have caught up on our "mommy" roles. Sometimes, before becoming a mom, you think, "What's going to happen, what's this world going to be like?" Then you realize all of these natural instincts come through your heart and your soul. We [Kim and I] had some fun conversations about that. Our kids are growing up and it's really cool to see all the pictures of how our kids are developing.

Turning the tables and jumping to a music question! What was your hardest music video to learn choreography for?

My hardest one ... I feel like "Got Me Good." It's one of my favorite music videos that I've done. There were pretty intense rehearsals for that one -- and "Like A Boy," was pretty intricate, too. It was a three-day video shoot for that one. And for "Got Me Good," we actually had to dance in the desert in, like, 110-degree weather. Dancing in the rehearsal hall was much different then dancing in the desert! That was a cool challenge.

And last question for you -- a sports one. How are the Seattle Seahawks going to do this year? (Ciara dates Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.)

Honestly, I have great faith and confidence in the boys. They're a phenomenal team and I truly think that they're one of the best teams out there. I'll just leave it at that -- it's going to be a phenomenal year for the team! Go Hawks!

To participate in #ShareAMeal, add the hashtag to pictures you post on social media. Unilever promises to donate one meal to Feeding America for every like, comment or share.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Here's What Prince George Might Look Like As An Adult

$
0
0

Prince George bears a striking resemblance to his father, Prince William.

For now, that is.

A group of computer scientists from the University of Bradford in the U.K. have developed face-mapping technology that analyzes a mix of facial features and information from parents and other relatives. Naturally, they put it to good use by predicting what George might look like at various ages.

If accurate, George's similarities to William will end, and soon:

The research team, lead by professor of visual computing Hasan Ugail, imagined what George might look like at age seven, 20, 40 and even 60 using "roughly 30 to 40 facial features," Ugail told Reuters. The results in the video above are interesting, albeit a bit creepy.

(As Time points out, possible future 60-year-old Prince George looks strangely like Liam Neeson.)

Predicting how members of the royal family may look at different stages of life is something of a trend. You might recall the artists who imagined what the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will look in their 80s, or how Newsweek dreamed up a cover with an aged Princess Diana walking with her daughter-in-law, or perhaps the time a genetics student at MIT theorized what George would look like as an adult before he was even born.

The university scientists say their technology could better help police find missing children, claiming the results are 80 percent accurate and superior to the current aging projections used by investigators.

We're all for using this tool for good, and you can call us when you're 40, Prince George. For now, though, can we please stop rushing this adorable baby's life away?

How to Look Better in One Minute

Beauty editors and makeup artists often say blush is the stiletto of beauty products -- it makes everyone look good. When applied correctly, blush can instantly make you look fresher, more vibrant, and just plain better. I was an unbeliever until the celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo offered a demonstration. For this next series of GIFs, the CK One Cosmetics global color ambassador, who's worked with nearly every Victoria's Secret angel (among other famous faces), demonstrates how to apply cream blush correctly.

Step 1: Start by choosing a rosy cream blush. Shades with a slight bit of pink are most natural, since they mimic the tones found in the skin when there is a slight flush. In this case, Vanngo is using CK One Cream and Powder Duo in Grace. Starting from the middle of your cheekbone, take your finger and dot out a slanted line, toward your ear. This also creates a naturally slimming effect.

Step 2: The key to making cream blush look natural is a lot, a lot of blending. The next few steps are all blending. Start to gently pat and blend the line down.

2015-11-11-1447276207-3549882-beauty110405.w529.h352.gif

Step 3: Use your forefinger to pat and blend in a circular downward direction, moving along the cheekbones.

Step 4: Slightly disperse and blend the cheek color up toward the temple of the cheek, as this avoids any harsh blush demarcation lines when you smile.

2015-11-11-1447276321-5356996-hunglook1extra02.w529.h352.gif

Step 5: Blend a tiny bit along the high point of the cheekbone. Note that along these steps, Vanngo didn't stop to apply more color -- that's right, he spent four steps continuing to blend the color.

Cover with less than 1/2” of water, bring to a boil and cook on low for 30 minutes; the lentils should be soft but not fall apart. Drain the lentils and place in a bowl. Remove the garlic, bay leaf and parsley. Toss with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and set aside to cool.Rub the inside of another bowl with the remaining clove of garlic. Add the drained beans, yogurt, cumin, a little salt and pepper, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the lemon juice. Blend until creamy using a stick blender, adding a little water if the mixture is too thick. Soak the raisins in the lukewarm orange juice for 10 minutes. Drain and set the juice aside. Mince the carrot, onion and celeriac, and add to the lentils. Stir in the raisins. Prepare an emulsion with the orange juice, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over the lentils and toss. Set aside for 15 minutes and then serve with the bean sauce.

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE WITH CONCORD GRAPE COMPOTE
(Serves four)

130 g (4.5 oz) bittersweet chocolate (70%)
3 eggs
20 g (2.5 tbsp) powdered sugar about 1 tbsp butter
300 g (10.5 oz) Concord grapes
30 g (1/8 cup) granulated sugar juice and part of the zest of 1 lemon

Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean. Melt the chocolate with the butter and vanilla seeds bain-marie. Set aside to cool. Separate the eggs. Add the yolks to the chocolate mixture one at a time, beating well. Set aside. Beat the whites to soft peaks, adding the powdered sugar when the whites are foamy: you should have a soft meringue. Using a spatula, fold the beaten egg whites into
the chocolate mixture. Spoon the mousse into glasses and refrigerate for 2 hours. Cut some of the grapes in half and leave the rest whole. Simmer all the grapes for 15 minutes with the sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice and zest, swirling the pan. Cool. Serve the mousse with the grape compote.

Fashion Blogger's Bizarre Beauty Secret: Sperm Facials (NSFW)

A skin care treatment being promoted by a British model-turned-fashion blogger is rubbing some experts the wrong way.

Her secret: A daily dose of semen smeared on her face.

Tracy Kiss, a former glamor model with two kids, was looking for ways to ease her rosacea, a condition that causes the face to redden, often producing pus-filled bumps, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Kiss may love sperm facials, but dermatologists are strongly against her bodily fluid beauty regimen.

Kiss came about the method after a beautician suggested an acid facial for her rosacea.

The 28-year-old decided to try more natural skincare methods instead.

"Semen builds babies, they come out very soft and have beautiful skin, and it leaves my skin nice and soft, so I'm very happy to use this as a facial," she said, according to the Mirror.

"It feels like a face pack that pulls the skin inwards, it feels so glossy to wipe it off. It's like having a kind of oil on the face or a wax where it just glides beautifully against the water. It's so cooling and soothing."

Kiss isn't the first person to sing the praises of sperm facials.

In 2013, when TMZ asked actress Heather Locklear for anti-aging secrets, she replied,

"You just put semen on your face."

Former Cosmopolitan magazine editor, Helen Gurley Brown, also swore by the "semen facial" in her memoir, "I'm Wild Again."

"Spread semen over your face," she advised. “[It’s] probably full of protein as sperm can eventually become babies.”

Dr. Lynne Haven, a dermatologist in Greenwich, Connecticut, hopes the semen facial doesn't catch on with others.

"I've never seen any evidence of benefits, and there are several areas of concern," she told The Huffington Post. "Sexually transmitted diseases, like herpes, HIV and others could be transmitted, and there are many other better treatments for rosacea."

San Diego-based dermatologist Dr. Fred Shahan is also dubious of sperm facials.

"Semen does have protein, but rosacea is related to hair follicles," he told HuffPost. "I don't see any basis for this working."

Kiss admits getting the semen needed for her daily dose can also be a sticking point.

That's why she recommends a person invest "in a reliable male with a healthy diet and stamina to ensure a plentiful supply, perhaps a boyfriend, husband or, in my case, a health-conscious friend" before beginning the treatment.

She explains in more detail on her blog:

"Whoever you choose to provide a donation, it is important that you use the same caution you would around all bodily fluids, always ensure that they have had a sexual health check and are eating clean and nutritious food a few days before instead of smoking, drinking and binging on junk, or the quality will suffer.

"I would never condone using anonymous semen, and in no way encourage this to become a sexual act. I am simply looking at this from the angle of beauty. You have to strip away the shock-horror of the ingredients and any preconception of how it may feel, smell or look and base it solely on what it does."

Although most of the dermatologists interviewed don't believe Kiss' sperm facial has much medical merit, she gets grudging support from at least one.

Dr. Tess Mauricio, southern California-based skin doctor, said semen does contain a protease -- that's what helps sperm break through eggs in order to conceive -- so it may also have a chemical or enzymatic effect on human skin.

"It may make the skin feel softer and smoother, but the evidence is all anecdotal," she told HuffPost. "There are more cosmetically acceptable products that can achieve similar results."

New York-based dermatologist Dr. Tabasum Mir concedes that some people may want to give themselves a natural facial, but said semen doesn't really have enough bang to do the job.

"The amount of protein in seminal fluid is small. You'd be better off using egg whites," she told HuffPost. "Plus, sperm has urea -- which is basically pee -- and testosterone, which causes breakouts."
