The Most Stylish Winter Hats You Can Wear (That Aren't A Beanie)

$

It's almost winter. There, we said it. It's the first step to accepting that the weather is changing, forcing us to kiss sandals, bare legs and breezy dresses goodbye. Though the arrival of snowy weather isn't the best news, the wardrobe that comes along with it is pretty great -- especially the hats. Not only do toppers keep you warm, but they are also the perfect disguise for bad (or greasy) hair days.

Instead of blending into the crowd in a traditional beanie, why not opt for something a little different? Try a trapper hat (your ears will thank you), or you could take a cue from the French and opt for a beret. Better yet, wear a wool cap because, let's be honest, is anything more chic than that?

Behold, all your winter hat options that aren't a beanie.

Trapper Hats

1. Madewell & Owen Barry™ Shearling Trapper Hat, $169; 2. Madewell Baseball Trapper Hat, $39; 3. River Island Light Beige Faux Fur Trapper Hat, $56; 4. Outdoor Research Baltic Trapper Hat, $17; 5. Helly Hansen Knitted Faux Fur Trapper Hat, $60

Bobble Hats

1. Forever21 Stripe-Trim Pom Beanie, $8; 2. Neiman Marcus Cashmere Fur-Pom-Pom Hat, $57; 3. IDA Off Piste Hat,£85 (approx.$129); 4. Zulily Red & White Stripe Pom-Pom Beanie, $13; 5. Solid Color Bobble Beanie, $24

Berets

1. Topshop Wool Blend Beret Hat, $30; 2. Collection 18 Galaxy Sequin Beret, $20; 3. Lauren Ralph Lauren Felted Beret, $38; 4. Gucci Wool Beret, $295; 5. Eugenia Kim Harley Hardly Wool & Fox Fur Pom Pom Beret, $165

Wool Caps

1. Helene Berman Cap With Faux Fur Pom Pom  £55 (approx. $83 USD); 2. Helene Berman Cat Ear Wool Cap, $125; 3. Charlotte Simone Grey Fur Pom Pom Sass Cap, £95 (approx. $144 USD); 4. & Other Stories Wool Cap, $55

But of course, you could just stick to what you know and get a beanie:

1. Madewell Cashmere Beanie, $89; 2. Portolano Cashmere Cuffed Beanie Hat, $45; 3. White & Warren Cashmere Ribbed Beanie, $49; 4. Old Navy Fair Isle Beanie, $12; 5. New Look Cream Cable Knit Beanie Hat, £5 (approx. $7 USD)

Tabatha Coffey has ascended to international stardom as a stylist, author, style icon, and host of her own Bravo reality show Tabatha Takes Over. Originally about helping struggling hair salons, the show now covers all varieties of small business. Watch Tabatha dish no-nonsense tips on hair and business in the clips above!

Fresh perspective
The key to staying on top of things in business, according to Tabatha, is keeping a fresh perspective. Are you viewing your workplace like a first-time customer would? As an exercise, walk in with a "fresh set of eyes", not as "Tabatha, or the boss." Entering a space like this will help you evaluate the realities of your workplace. "Are we welcoming, are we professional... what are we doing, how is our cleanliness," she states. All these observations require stepping outside of yourself for a moment, something that Tabatha herself admits "is not easy to do!"

Does Male Baldness Really Skip Generations?

$

0

Maybe you know a guy, maybe you've heard his story, or you're him: He who once had thick, healthy, shiny, enviable hair, now is bald.

Was it because his mom's dad was bald -- it's a common conception that it skips generations -- or was it his testosterone? And will it happen to you?

We asked Dr. Alan J. Bauman, a board-certified hair restoration physician in Boca Raton, Florida, to help us comb through the facts.

Yes, it can skip generations:

"There are over 200 genes that we’re aware of now that regulate hair and hair growth," Bauman, who sees more than 1,000 patients a year in his clinic, told HuffPost. "Color quality, texture, length of growth cycles, balding patterns, the speed of balding -- all of those put together will determine how quickly you see loss occur, how quickly it progresses, and how long it will occur later in life."

It comes down to the x-linked chromosome that carries the baldness gene, and that can come from either side of your family (not just your mom's).

"It could skip generations, skip siblings. That’s how a recessive gene typically works," Bauman said. So look at your whole family -- siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles -- to see if there's any hair loss amongst them. If so, early intervention is best.

But there's more to it:

A lot of factors can trigger hair loss, Bauman said: Certain medicines, your diet and sleep-wake cycles are a few examples. "Hair follicles can be quite sensitive."

But a main cause is stress, which is "certainly a trigger in every single patient that comes through the door."

What can you do?

Stay observant. "You can lose up to 50 percent of your hair mass without it being noticeable to the naked eye," Bauman said. "That’s really the problem."

Look for symptoms of hair loss in places other than your head: On your pillows, in your shower drain -- if you see more of your hair around the house, you could be in a period of hair loss.

You can make an appointment with a trichologist to have your scalp evaluated, or seek out special treatments such as a scalp makeover, which Bauman administers at his Boca Raton clinic.

"That’s the amazing thing today," Bauman said. "Effective treatments are available."

Whether through oral treatments, topical medications, laser light therapy, nutritional modifications and eliminating your risk factors, "There's a lot of things you can do to stop the progression of hair loss today," he said. "The realm of 20 years ago, where everything was snake oil and hogwash, is over."

Not every method works for everyone, so talk to your doctor to find out which treatments can work for you.

Congratulations go out to Whitney Port and her new husband Tim Rosenman!

The MTV-reality-star-turned-fashion-designer said her "I dos" in Palm Springs, California on Saturday in front of about 200 guests. And no surprise here: Port donned an incredibly stylish dress for the occasion, which featured a high-low skirt and a lace bodice embellished with pearls.

Port collaborated with Ashi Studio on the custom-made gown, according to Us Weekly.

The groom told the magazine that he was a big fan of Port's big day look.

“There was so much buildup to what her dress was going to look like because we kept it secret," he said.  "I didn’t think it could possibly match the buildup, but I was blown away. She looked fantastic.”

Port's sister Ashley, the owner of event planning company BK Events, orchestrated the celebration. She described the day as "magical."

"I know that sounds super cheesy, but everything was organized, ran smoothly and just completely joyous," she told The Huffington Post.

A photo posted by Whitney Port (@whitneyeveport) on

Port and Rosenman first met when he was an associate producer on her reality show "The City" and began dating in 2012

"They are so happy, tremendously in love and really partners in life," Ashley told HuffPost. "Everyone at the wedding could feel their love from the very emotional ceremony all the way through the brunch on Sunday -- it was palpable!"

For more photos and details from the wedding, pick up the new issue of Us Weekly.

This story has been updated with commentary from the bride's sister.

Here Are 3 Ways To Guarantee Your Small Business Will Succeed

Tabatha Coffey has ascended to international stardom as a stylist, author, style icon, and host of her own Bravo reality show Tabatha Takes Over. Originally about helping struggling hair salons, the show now covers all varieties of small business. Watch Tabatha dish no-nonsense tips on hair and business in the clips above!

In life and in business, change can be tough to accept. But it's not just something that we all should do - it's something we have to. Tabatha gave us a few great tips on how we can get our stubborn selves to adapt a little more easily.

  1. Be open to change!

If things aren't working, a change to your operations may be necessary. Deciding what it is exactly you need to change may be harder than it looks. "It's like a diet," says Tabatha, "Don’t change everything all at once - pick the things that are the most important and focus on them first." It's best not to expect things to change overnight, either. "If you make a change, let 21 days pass for the change to become habit." Then reevaluate how it went.

  2. Don't be afraid
"Fear paralyzes people," warns Tabatha. Doing nothing may seem like a comfortable solution, but it is almost always worse than trying to make something different. The key to taking the step is asking yourself, "What's the worst that can happen?" The honest answer may surprise you - and help you take that next step.

  3. Be objective

Try to look at your circumstances with a fresh perspective. If you're unable to do that yourself, "get client you can trust, ask them - what’s wrong here?" suggests Tabatha. If you can’t be objective, get someone who can be objective. You have to be prepared to receive an opinion as well, though. Being honest is a two way street. "Embrace change and be bold," implores Tabatha.

These 6 Wardrobe Faux Pas Are Holding You Back (Advice From a Hiring Manager)

$

Co-authored by Kristen Crees, staff writer at Avelist

2015-11-10-1447181254-3344955-3A725A07E9.jpg

Dressing for success has so many different meanings to different people that the ability to dress well seems to have become a lost art. So how do we actually need to dress for interviews and the workforce? As an experienced hiring manager, I saw every conceivable outfit walk through my door, and there are a few lines that should not be crossed:

1. Wearing revealing clothing. I've got a bit of punk rock and goth mixed with my personality, and I love a corset shirt, cut-off skirt, and ripped leggings as much as the next rocker, but this is not OK in an office! According to a survey given by the Society of Human Resources Managers (SHRM),dressing too provocatively is the biggest problem for hiring managers interviewing. While 28% of hiring managers said it posed a problem, a whopping 67% said it was a deal breaker. 67%! That's a scary stat, to think that two-thirds of employers will nix you despite your qualifications because they deem your clothing too revealing.

The solution: I used to tell employees that they needed to change their idea of "nice clothes." "Nice clothes" is too broad of a spectrum. You wear nice clothing to church, to a party, to a club, on a date, to the red carpet. None of these scenarios make it to the workplace. That adorable sundress you wore when your grandma guilted the family into an Easter service and brunch... not OK. Look at the straps, look at the front cut, and look at the length. That nice dark wash jean and that cute tank from that party? While the jeans may cut it for a casual workplace environment, the shirt never will. Neither is good for an interview.

2. Club wear at an interview. (Sorry, I need some deep, healing breaths before I start on this one.) I am a big fan of body positivity, and if you got it flaunt it, but not in a professional setting. Bodycon dresses, short shirts and skirts, super high heels, giant dangly earrings, more makeup than a stage performer, tube tops, super low fronts and backs do not work. I've seen it all and much more. Your goal is to come across as focused and professional, not just hot.

The solution: In my experience, people hate being asked to tone down their wardrobe, seeing it as an attempt to strip them of their sexiness, personality, or even of their femininity. That isn't how it has to be. No one is saying you have to dress in your mom's hand-me-downs of '80's suits and twin sets. You can still showcase your unique personality through your clothes in a beautiful and classy way. For example, keep the skirts to a decent length, no shorter than the lower thigh. If you love your shape, show it off with high-waisted, knee-length pencil skirt. Love your toned calves? You can still wear heels, maybe just go for the three inchers and leave the club height at home. Plus, you can spice up a demure style with a rockin' shoe in a fun color or texture, or both. Shirts and pants should fit. Fit meaning they lay on your body and not squeeze it into submission. No skin tight clothing, please. Neutrals are your friend in dressing for work, but that doesn't mean you can't add pops of color. Accessories are great for showcasing your personality too, just don't pile on every piece of jewelry you own. Even your nails can express your personality. Your hands don't have to be polish free and short-nailed. You can have long painted nails, just don't go too crazy with designs and nails as long as your fingers themselves.

3. Dressing too casually. If your preference is pants (like me) there are still risks at play. Dressing too casually is almost as detrimental as dressing too provocatively. That same SHRM poll found that 68% of employers found dressing too casually to be a problem and 27% stated it to be a deal breaker too. I'm going to throw this out in no uncertain terms for you: DO NOT WEAR JEANS, T-SHIRTS, OR TENNIS SHOES TO AN INTERVIEW. EVER. These things should never, ever be considered a part of your wardrobe for work. I have never hired anyone wearing jeans, and that was a job to sell knives designed for college students. I don't care how nice your Jordans are or that they are your "good luck jeans," don't wear them to an interview. You probably shouldn't wear them to the office either.

4. Be clean. Arriving dirty from mudding or working out is not how you want to present yourself. Basic hygiene is a must, think about the locker room after a hard gym day. A hiring manager wouldn't want to to shake hands with, let alone hire someone who couldn't even bother to clean up for a prospective job.

The solution: Hygiene comes down to what your momma taught you when you were a kid. Take a shower and scrub until you smell good. Brush your teeth and hair. These are truly simple things. The complications come with timing, but you have to distinguish your priority (hint: it should be the interview) and make sure that comes first. It you have an interview at 9:00 a.m. but you normally work out until 8:30 a.m., don't just run straight from the gym to the interview. That barely gives you enough time to travel to be there on time -- meaning early. Sacrifice the gym that morning. Make sure that you focus on your interview, on having enough time to at least be hygienic. Body odor, sweat stains, bad breath, etc. are all major problems that are easy to fix.

5. Piercings, tattoos, and alternative hairstyles. Most employers have become much more open to piercings, tattoos, and alternative hair colors and styles, keep in mind that they should be tamed before an interview. The hiring manager might be from a different generation where these things were considered taboo. I'm not saying don't get that sleeve tattoo you've been wanting, but maybe think about wearing long sleeves to interviews.

The solution: Personally, I have quite a few tattoos but I make sure almost all of them are covered for work. Even the one behind my ear can have my hair let down and hide if necessary. If you have piercings, most shops have clear studs that you can put in the pierced holes to make sure they don't close up but keep from being a distraction to your interviewer. Once you get the job, you can read the company policies on tattoos and piercings to maybe get some of your baubles back. A conservative hairstyle can be difficult if you have a head full of dreads or purple streaks in your hair, but it can still be done. Trust me, I've done that dance. Dreads and other styles like it can be pulled back into a bun or ponytail. A low bun is great for encasing those streaks and projecting professionalism. Make sure your face is featured, not covered. Pin long bangs back so your face is on full display and not half hidden. If your hair is a little on the awesome side, pulling it back lets the interviewer focus on your face and your words.

6. Clearly lacking confidence. There is one last item in your wardrobe that you must never leave home without and it is the one that every single potential employer will notice you don't have: confidence. No matter what job you are going for, how unsure you are, or even how worried about your appearance you may be, march in that lobby like a boss. Hold your head high, smile bright, and they'll know you are serious, ambitious, and able to handle what they throw at you. You can do this, and you can look great while you do it.

This Perfume Can Repel Mosquitoes

Here's something to keep in mind for the next mosquito season.

If you don't have access to an insect repellent containing the common active ingredient diethyltoluamide, or DEET, then the Victoria's Secret perfume called "Bombshell" may be the next best thing to ward off pesky bloodsuckers.

That's according to recent research conducted by scientists at New Mexico State University, who were quite surprised by the perfume's mosquito-repelling power.

"We were very surprised when we found that Bombshell repels mosquitoes better than some products that are marketed as mosquito repellents," Dr. Immo Hansen, associate professor of biology at the university and a co-author of the research, told The Huffington Post. "This particular perfume has a very sweet, flowery scent and there are some publications suggesting that such scents attract mosquitoes."

The researchers tested how effective 10 commercially available products are in repelling the two common mosquitoes species, yellow fever mosquitoes and Asian tiger mosquitoes. The products included repellents that contained DEET; common home remedy repellents such as Avon Skin So Soft bath oil; and Bombshell, which allowed the researchers to test how mosquitoes really react to flowery perfumes.

"The Bombshell perfume was a birthday present for Lisa Drake, one of the co-authors of the study," Hansen said. "I don’t know why she brought the bottle in the lab, but when I smelled it I knew that we had to test it."

The researchers used a Y-shaped tube to test the overall attraction rates of the mosquitoes to the products. The bottom of the tube was connected to a holding chamber containing about 20 mosquitoes.

Then, at one end of the fork in the Y-tube was a volunteer's bare hand coated in whichever product was being tested, and a fan that blew the scent of the product toward the mosquitoes. At the other end of the fork was nothing.

For each product, the researchers waited for roughly two and a half minutes to see whether mosquitoes flew toward the hand because they were attracted to the scent, or flew to the opposite end of the tube because they were repelled. The scientists noted that some mosquitoes didn't move at all, which also would indicate they were repelled.

The researchers found that about 60 percent of the yellow fever mosquitoes were attracted to the hand when no product was used, but when Bombshell was applied to the hand, that cut the attraction rate down to 17 percent -- and it kept the mosquitoes away for about two hours.

Meanwhile, the attraction rate for the tiger mosquitoes was lower, Stacy Rodriguez, a research assistant in the university’s Molecular Vector Physiology Lab and lead author of the research, told HuffPost.

"However, the fact remains the same that Bombshell significantly reduced the attraction rates to the individual for 120 minutes in both species," she said.

The researchers aren't quite sure why the perfume has repellent qualities, but concluded that the fragrance may provide a temporary masking effect.

The tests also showed that repellents containing DEET strongly repelled the mosquitoes. Non-DEET repellents had little to no effect on some of the mosquitoes, except for the Cutter-brand Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent. A Vitamin B patch was found to be ineffective.

The Avon Skin So Soft bug guard was effective in repelling the tiger mosquitoes, while the Avon Skin So Soft bath oil repelled the yellow fever mosquitoes.

"This is interesting because it shows that different species have adverse sensitivity to particular scents," Rodriguez said.

She added that the research findings are important because they can inform consumers as to which products can actually protect against mosquito bites.

"With the impending threat of chikungunya and dengue infections at the southern borders of the U.S., we need to choose products that work effectively to reduce the contact between the human and the mosquito," she said. "Both the yellow fever mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito are found in the U.S. and are vectors of the viruses that cause these diseases."

The research was published in the Journal of Insect Science on Oct. 6.

Tabatha Coffey's Fantastic Business-Savvy Tips

Originally about helping struggling hair salons, the show now covers all varieties of small business. Watch Tabatha dish no-nonsense tips on hair and business in the clips above!

Keys to modern business
While businesses have undoubtedly had to adapt to the modern world, Tabatha insists that the core fundamentals are still the same. "Good customer service, good product, and a professional attitude" are still the most important, says Tabatha. "But you have to flexible."

Social media
The current obstacle to be dealt with, for any small business, is definitely, according to Tabatha, "social media." With everything being so "instantaneous" in this day and age, socially media serves as an amazing tool that can "help - and hinder - a small business." Social media can help business connect with people, serve as an extension of the company's personality, and even expand their reach to new customers. Communication is a two way street though - customers can also respond to poor service or a "bad experience" with the product in a direct way, making a small business's customer service even more crucial to their success.

Before You Start A Small Business, Here's What You Need To Consider

The one thing you need
In the clip above, Tabatha lays out her advice on what a small business needs most when it's getting started. And in this case, it's a simple four-letter word many of us are terrified of. "PLAN," says Tabatha. "A lot people can have a great idea, but if they don’t think about how long it takes to get the business off the ground, or if they have enough money to pay the utilities, or if they can make the personal sacrifice required, then they are in trouble," warns Tabatha. If you do have an idea, make sure you put the same amount of energy into the logistical side as you do the entrepreneurial side. Maybe you're trying to do too much yourself - there's nothing wrong with asking for help!

Drop Everything: Target Is Coming To Lower Manhattan

Lower Manhattanites, you've just hit a bullseye.

Racked reports that Target, beloved retail mecca is headed to Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood in late 2016.

The store, which boasts a cult-like following across the country, is sure to be welcomed with open arms by apartment dwellers all over the island, especially since, as Racked reports, it will offer "smaller, commuter-friendly packaging" and apartment-sized furniture, too.

This marks the island's second Target location, the first located uptown in East Harlem. Other locations in New York City exist within the five boroughs, including its first CityTarget, which is set to open in Downtown Brooklyn in spring 2016.

No word on whether or not it will be open 24-hours (you know, for the city that never sleeps,) but one thing's for sure, Manhattan's fashion and decor lovers alike will be flocking to this new, convenient location.

And who knows, perhaps a Jay-Z / Beyoncé Target run-in is in our future!

Teen Vogue Is Not Ending Its Print Run, Contrary To Rumors

$

0

The Internet was abuzz Thursday with rumors that Teen Vogue, the beloved offshoot publication of Vogue that launched in 2003, would shutter.

Vogue, however, announced Thursday afternoon in a statement that it will absorb Teen Vogue only from the business side, with the editorial side remaining intact as of now.

The younger magazine has evolved into a staple for both teenage and adult fashion lovers alike over its 13-year-run, recently receiving high praise for featuring three models of color on its Aug. 2015 cover.

Teen Vogue will continue to roll out on digital platforms, its monthly print form and on social media, a magazine spokesperson said. A statement released by Vogue announced the glossy's publisher Jason Wagenheim is leaving, and the teams at Vogue and Teen Vogue will be marketed together:

Teen Vogue will continue to operate independently, with the same frequency, and have its distinct voice. As Artistic Director, [Vogue editor-in-chief] Anna [Wintour] will continue to oversee editorial operations, with [Teen Vogue editor-in-chief] Amy Astley and her team reporting in to her, as before. We are making a change in reporting structure on the business side. Susan Plagemann will oversee the sales and marketing teams. We feel this will only serve to strengthen the power of both brands. Jason Wagenheim has chosen to leave the company after the Thanksgiving holiday.

The news comes in a bleak year for fashion magazines at parent company Condé Nast. The publisher announced back in August that Lucky Magazine would be spun off before finally shuttering the brand completely in November. Last week Condé-owned GQ reportedly suffered a round of layoffs in an effort to focus more on digital, with WWD reporting rumors that Glamour may soon face staff or budget cuts as well.

Spearheaded by Astley, who was hand-picked for the job by Wintour, Teen Vogue has long been considered a survivor in the teen magazine landscape. As The New York Times noted in a profile in 2013, the year the magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary, it "has outlasted YM, Elle Girl, Teen People, Cosmo Girl! and Teen, which all folded."

However, like many other print magazines, the Times also reported that the glossy had seen a decline in sales of "half what they were when the magazine began."

Only time will tell what comes next for the mag, but for now, it lives to see another day.

North West and Penelope Disick continue to be a perfect toddler pair.

Kim Kardashian shared the latest insanely adorable picture of the cousins on Instagram Thursday night, featuring an eye gaze that really appears to convey a true mutual respect. The power of female friendship, everyone:

The cousins' close relationship has been well-documented through different family members' social media accounts over the years.

Last month, they dressed up as "Frozen" characters (and fellow related woman friends) Anna and Elsa for Halloween. (It was almost as cute as moms Kim and Kourtney in their toddler costumes back in the day.)

Elsewhere, they've been seen truly enjoying their lives as influential members of Hollywood's under 5 set.

Riley Curry Lands First Modeling Gig, Making Moccasins Even Cuter

Riley Curry, the 3-year-old daughter of NBA superstar Stephen Curry and wife Ayesha, has already captivated the public's attention with her scene-stealing charisma, rapping skills, and fresh dance moves. So it was only a matter of time before the fashion industry came knocking.

The tiny tot is now officially the face of Freshly Picked, a children's fashion brand that is known for its adorable leather baby moccasins. The Utah-based company has tapped Curry to front its newest line of shoes, a hard-soled moccasin for bigger kids called The Next Step Shoe.

“Riley was a very natural choice for us to work with because she has been wearing Freshly Picked since day one -- she grew up in Freshly Picked," Susan Petersen, founder and creator of Freshly Picked, said in a press release. "One time her mother, Ayesha, posted a picture of Riley's favorite Freshly Picked moccasins after they had been chewed up by their dog and we loved how that image perfectly captured the reality of the large part that Freshly Picked plays in every day of Riley's childhood.”

In Curry's campaign, the cutie is captured cheerfully playing in a metallic gold version of the shoes -- which are available starting today in child sizes 7-13 in nine different color ways. There's also an ultra cute video shoot of Curry, who Freshly Picked has deemed its "littlest and freshest creative director," for the partnership.

“Shooting the video with Riley was so much fun and such a treat," Petersen said. "I was so impressed with how personable she was and also how natural she was in front of the camera. Riley was definitely born to be a star!”

Can this kid get any cuter? Something tells us she can, and that this is only the beginning of Miss Riley's modeling days. We can't wait to see what she does next.

How To Wear Sunglasses Like Cary Grant In 'North By Northwest'

They're intriguing, sharp, enduringly classic and mysterious: We're talking about Cary Grant's sunglasses in "North By Northwest."

Whereas nobody seems to know what brand they are, it's a heated debate amongst shade geeks and style blogs. Some swear they're Tart Arnels (a descendant of the designer told Slate that's not the case) and others are sure they're Moscots. Either way, the ability to look as good Grant in a pair for yourself is not nearly as unattainable as figuring out their origin.

Warby Parker, an eyewear brand synonymous with accessible and affordable style, features several frames in its lineup this season that are close clones to Grant's. Neil Blumenthal, Warby Parker's CEO, gave us three key tips to achieving that timeless look, even if you don't have Grant's head on your shoulders.

1. It's all about juxtaposition:

"In terms of why Grant looks so great in them, the big thing is that eyewear's all about juxtaposition," Blumenthal said, adding that the rounder your face is, the more angular frames you should wear. Grant's auburn tortoiseshell frame is a stark contrast against his dark lenses, and stand out against his fair complexion. Also, "His frames are quite versatile -- if you look at the shape, it's not overly round, it’s not overly angular. It fits so many different face shapes."

2. Don't forget about your skin tone:

While your facial structure is important, Blumenthal noted that you should also consider your complexion, too. Don't forget about your "color palette, or what complements your skin tones," he said. "Often, something that’s too similar can look a little off, so again juxtaposition generally helps -- within a range. If there’s too stark of a contrast, that can look jarring and not be as complementary to somebody’s skin tone."

3. Get the right fit:

Because sunglasses are tinted, Blumenthal said they're typically more forgiving than eyeglasses, but you should still consider the fit. "You want the frames to be as wide as your face, not too narrow so that the temples are squeezing the sides of your face. Likewise, if they are too oversized you can look like a clown."

He added that you're good to avoid the bottom of the frame resting on your cheeks, and it's not necessarily as important that your eyes be in the center of the frame, as is the case when wearing eyeglasses.

But what about Grant's specific frames?

If you're dead set on getting those NxNW shades, Warby Parker's Ormbsby and Downing frames are close proxies.

Also, while they're not officially the historic frames, the Tart Arnels widely assumed to be Grant's, available reproduced from Allyn Scura, are a great substitute, as are Moscot's Lemtosh frames.

Whichever style you pick, just make sure you don't forget one rule that Grant seemed to have forgotten: "He is so cool that nobody makes a comment that he’s actually wearing sunglasses indoors in 'North By Northwest,'" Blumenthal pointed out with a laugh. "Which we would consider a big faux pas."

We reached out to the archives department at Warner Brothers in case they have notes to solve the frames mystery, and we'll update this post if we hear anything definitive.
