Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge visited the French embassy in London Tuesday to sign its book of condolences following the deadly attack in Paris that killed at least 129 people and wounded hundreds more last week.

The pair spoke with the French ambassador to the United Kingdom and left a joint note in the book, written by Prince William and also signed by Kate.

"To all those who have died and were injured in the heartless attacks in Paris, and to all the people in France: nos plus sincères condoléances (our deepest condolences)," it read.

The duke and duchess join a long list of public figures to pay tribute to the victims of the attacks, with many politicians and celebrities taking to social media to express condolences and reactions of their own:

Watch The Gorgeous Evolution Of '100 Years Of Ethiopian Beauty'

WatchCut, the brand behind the "100 Years Of Beauty" series that runs on YouTube, has taken a trip to Ethiopia for its latest installment

The one-minute video, which serves as the series' first foray in featuring an East African country, shows a stunning model with her hair and makeup styled to reflect the iconic looks of Ethiopian women through the years.

The video beautifully captures the unique styles of women in Ethiopia through each decade, beginning in 1900. From the scalp-tight braids of the 1910s to the sleek and straight style of the 2000s, every look has distinct inspiration, features and flair.

In a behind-the-scenes video, Karen Maniracho, the video researcher for the project, identified each of the iconic Ethiopian women she drew inspiration from to help create the looks, including Assegedech Assefa, Ethiopia's first female pilot, Dina Fikadu, crowned Miss Ethiopia in 2006 and Empress Menen Asfaw, among others.

The video also aims to combat negative perceptions of Africa by embedding important cultural lessons in its imagery.

"If you're watching the news, you're seeing stories of poverty and famine still," said Maniracho. "And if you're watching music and pop culture then you're usually watching the archetype of beauty as straight hair and usually fair skin, which isn't really representative of all of the range of Ethiopians."

"This isn't the end to African beauty," Maniracho said of the latest episode. "This is just the first of many ways to talk about the diversity on the continent."

This Ethiopian woman proudly approves.

Rising Literary Stars Dress Up As Their Favorite Book Characters

Every writer began as a reader, a brilliant new photo feature from New York Magazine's The Cut reminds us. The Cut photographed and interviewed five acclaimed women authors, each embodying a favorite literary character, in a piece on "literary heroines" appearing in the Nov. 16 issue of the magazine.

We may know Hanya Yanagihara as the author of this year's melancholy epic A Little Life, and Angela Flournoy as the scribe behind breakout novel The Turner House -- both finalists for the National Book Award in Fiction, which will be awarded this week.

But did you know Yanagihara feels a special connection to Tom Ripley, the scheming social climber of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley? "The villains," she told The Cut, "are always the characters the author has the most fun writing."

Flournoy, on the other hand, was profoundly affected by Toni Morrison's classic Sula. "The first time I read it, I had never really read a book that was pretty plainly just about black female friendship," she recalled.

Check out the full feature, including authors Alexandra Kleeman and Emily St. John Mandel, at The Cut.

New App Lets You Match Your Nail Polish To Literally Any Color Ever

0

Ever watched a sunset and thought to yourself, "Man, I wish I could wear that EXACT shade of purple on my nails?" Well now there's an app for that.

ShadeScout Nails from FaceCake Marketing Technologies, Inc. is a free app that allows you to match almost any color you can find to its exact match of nail polish. It even gives you a range of options.

All you have to do is take or upload a photo, hover over the color you want to match and press the "Scout" button. The ShadeScout app instantly pulls up a list of brands and polish colors to match your request.

You can even "try on" the suggested colors through the app, as ShadeScout lets users pick the hand model's skin color, nail length and nail shape. There is also an option to favorite and buy the nail polish you pick.

"It’s about personalization and helping shoppers find exactly what they are looking for," FaceCake's founder and CEO Linda Smith told Mashable. "Wanting an instant way to translate brilliant real-life colors into direct product results, discovering new shades that are available for immediate purchase, and to have that ability in a mobile app, were among the inspirations for ShadeScout Nails."

We tried the app with some of our favorite things:

Macarons are always the most perfect colors. If you want that beautiful shade of marigold, ShadeScout delivers the suggestion of "Atomic Orange" by OPI. But the Formula X shade is a close second.

The Statue of Liberty's oxidized blue-green hue is iconic. If you want it on your nails, "Artful Dodger" by Butter London looks like the best choice.

In love with the soft pink in the twilight of this picture of Grand Teton National Park? Zoya always has a lot of great pink options but "lady like" by Essie is a great match.

In addition to uploading your own photos, users can also browse through the app's "Featured Shades" which pulls up trending nail polish colors either from images or celebrity sightings.

Currently, ShadeScout Nails features 25 brands, including China Glaze, Dolce&Gabbana and Julep.

What Happened When Women Put Period-Proof Underwear To The Test

0
0

When BuzzFeed asked a group of women to try period-proof underwear, many of them were hesitant. But they came out on the other side quite impressed.

In a video from BuzzFeed Yellow, four women gave Padkix period-proof underwear a try. One woman described the underwear as "comfy but frumpy," and another joked that she thought her pair might be attracting dogs (yikes!). In the end though, the women said the underwear resulted in stain-free sheets and "no spillage."

"I'm not a totally changed woman, but I realized that I was a little quick to judge," one woman said.

Don't knock it until you try it.

Is My Hairstyle a Feminist Statement?

0
0
You may not realize it, but hair is political. From the liberated women of the 1920s chopping their hair short, to the 80s punks rocking their mohawks, hair trends often reflect political statements (intentional and unintentionally). The long and flowing hair of the 60s was a direct response to women becoming more active in the workplace and no longer being willing to put so much time into their hair. The dip dye from more recent years reflects a need for women to spend longer time between hair appointments due to a reduction in luxury spending.

I'd like to make a case for us to celebrate the blow dry, the 1960s hair revolution that freed women from the tyranny of sleepless nights and hours at the salon, and has been making a come back in recent years with the birth of the blow dry bar.

Hairdryers were originally invented back in 1890 by Alexander Godefroy in France, but the first ones suitable for home use weren't available until the twenties. There were tragically many cases of electrocution and death. No wonder they didn't catch on!

There seem to be two people credited with inventing the blow out as we know it today; Rose Cannon in London, and Patrick Alès in France). Alès even sold his patent to L'Oreal and was the first hairdresser to use plants to create safer and more gentle hair products with his brand Phyto, a brand still successful today.

Cannon, who owned a London salon with her husband in the 60s, talks about walking past a barber's shop, where hairdryers were regularly used to dry men's hair, and she had the light bulb moment of using the dryer on women's hair too. She then happened to use her new blow wave method on the then editor of Vogue, Lady Clare Rendlesham, which led to it being written about in that evening's newspaper. Cannon was proud of freeing women from their hair routines, despite her husband being annoyed at having just had 20 (now redundant) hood dryers delivered to the salon. No longer did women need to spend hours at the hairdressers setting their hair; and the softer and looser style was also representative of the changing roles of women too. Women were increasingly going out to work, and creating lives of their own, away from the kitchen and drudgery of housework.

Similarly to the 1920s, when women cutting their hair short, caused outrage, women embracing 60s hairstyles were also making their own political statement, intentionally or not. Both the '20s and '60s were monumental moments in time for the feminist movement, and women had freedoms they'd never enjoyed before. It was no coincidence that as the mind-set of women were changing, their beauty and hair regimes changed alongside them.

The recent surge in blow-dry bars to our modern high streets hints that we may well be returning to the old-age habit of having our hair styled regularly between cuts. Just like our grandmothers who often visited the salon weekly (many continuing for their whole lives!). Nicky Clark even goes so far to say that there are no iconic haircuts anymore, just blow dries. Perhaps the modern resurgence in regular styling appointments stands for its own small political statement too, just as they did in the 60s. As we edge away from the recession, are we more willing and able to show the world that we can indulge in our hair again? Just as during wartime, women embraced red lips and victory rolls, perhaps modern women are swishing their curly blow dries at the current economy, showing it that we mean business.

Here's What People's Sexiest Men Alive Look Like Now

On Tuesday night, People's Sexiest Man Alive 2015 will be revealed. For the third year in a row, the newly crowned king of the magazine cover will make his debut with an interview on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

While People is busy teasing the public with clues as to who this attractive man could be (our guess is Chris Pratt), we thought now was as good a time as any to take a walk down memory lane and check out what the sexiest men from 1985 to 2005 look like now.

Note: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Patrick Swayze made the cover in 1988 and 1991, respectively. Kennedy died in 1999 and Swayze died in 2009.

5 Times Kendall Jenner's Clothes Cost More Than Your Rent

For all the times Kendall Jenner steps out in something affordable, there are dozens of times when she wears $2,550 T-shirts. Whether or not she paid for these things (and we have a feeling she did not), the fact that $995 sweatpants exist is a bit of a mystery to us.

We know that the reality star has made a very successful career for herself as a model, but it still pains us when we see her in a garment that cost more than our rent. We officially give up -- we can't keep up with the Kardashians.

Grace Kelly Would Have Been A Model Grandma, Son Prince Albert Says

Monaco's Prince Albert reminisced about his late parents, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III, when talking about his young children. His wife, Princess Charlene, gave birth to twins Jacques and Gabriella late last year, and sadly, the twins will never be able to meet their paternal grandparents.

"I think she would have been an outstanding grandmother," Prince Albert told People Magazine, of his late mother, known to much of the world as American actress Grace Kelly. The actress married Prince Rainier in 1956, becoming a Monegasque princess before tragically dying in a car crash in 1982.

As for his father, who died in 2005, Albert said, "He would have been a little more indulgent. More lenient than he was with myself and my sisters."

Albert and his siblings had a close bond with their mother. "If we needed to ask for something, we'd go to mom," he said in a 2014 interview, calling her "very caring and very loving."

Though the royal couple's twins won't be able to meet their paternal grandparents, they do have living grandparents on their mother's side.

Two other royal babies, the UK's Prince George and Princess Charlotte, also won't be able to meet one of their grandparents. Prince George's godmother, Julia Samuel, who was a close friend of the late Princess Diana, says she would have made a fun-loving grandmother. "She would have been a fantastic grandmother," Samuel told You Magazine. "It breaks my heart even thinking about it, because she would have been amazing, she really would."

The 'Short Guy Problem' in Clothing Stores Spotlights the Limits of Big Brands

0
0
2 Venture for America Fellows, Steven Mazur and Eric Huang, struggled for years to find shirts that fit well off the rack. Every time they bought a shirt, it fit funny. The sleeves were too long. The proportions were unflattering. The fronts hung too low.

They had a problem that major brands couldn't address.

They're short. Steven is 5 foot 6 inches while Eric is pushing 5 foot 8.

If you're anything like me, this doesn't seem like it should present much of a problem. There are tons of guys who are vertically challenged. It's a big market. 1 in 3 American men are 5'8" and below, which means there are about 40 million short guys out there. How is this problem not being addressed?

Only when Steven explained it to me did I understand. "J. Crew and other major retailers spend millions of dollars building their brands and making their stores cool, shooting fashionable ads and everything else. If they had a section called 'Short and Small', no guy would want to be seen shopping there. It would mess with their brand. So they don't bother."

He's right. I've seen dozens of big and tall sections at different stores. Never a short and small.

Steven and Eric were so convinced that this was a problem that they started a crowdfunding campaign for shirts designed to fit short guys. The campaign was a raging success - they got over $27,000 in IndieGogo orders in just a few weeks - leading to their new company, Ash & Anvil, that makes cool apparel for short guys.

The story of Ash & Anvil has a number of lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs looking for opportunities.

First, if you've got a problem, you're not alone. You've likely got a lot of company.

Second, own it. One of the reasons this problem has persisted for so long is that short guys have grinned and bore it. Steven tells me stories about shopping in kids' sections, having to pay the 'tailor tax' to get clothes altered, and other things that could be considered trivial but add up. Steven's a short guy with a big problem to solve.

Third, there are massive limitations to what big companies can do. They can't undermine their own brands that they spend millions of dollars building. They can't pursue niches that don't line up with their core businesses. They're bad at addressing marginal populations. For an entrepreneur, these niches represent significant opportunities. Seek out the underserved market segment that's suffering in silence.

As Steven says, "I know that clothes for short guys isn't like solving world hunger. But I'll tell you, as a short guy, it's a big deal to put on a shirt that makes you feel good about yourself, that you know looks good on you because it was made with you in mind. Creating that feeling for others is now a mission for me."

Ash & Anvil is going to help a lot of people stand a little bit taller.

Adele's Style Evolution Proves Her Loyalty To The Little Black Dress

We're unofficially dubbing November "Adele month." After all, she has been the most talked-about celebrity over the past few weeks. When her new single "Hello" dropped in late October, the Internet was abuzz over the smash hit and to date, her music video has received over 415 million views (and we'd say we're probably only responsible for about a million of those).

The British singer has been in and out of the spotlight for almost a decade now, and we've seen a lot of changes from when she first burst onto the scene. In honor of the release of her new album "25" on Friday (Nov. 20), we are paying tribute to Adele's style over the years. Just like her vocal cords, this lady's outfits are only getting better. Over the years, we've seen Adele's hair color change many times, but one thing has remained constant -- her love of the little black dress. Herewith, 28 photos of Adele's most memorable looks.

41 Solange Knowles Hairstyles You'll Want To Copy Right Now

0
0

There's no denying Solange Knowles' style star status. Her signature eye-catching style keeps us in a constant state of swoon. And when it comes to her ever-changing hairstyles we are never void of inspiration when dreaming up our next look.

And just in time for Throwback Thursday, we're reminded of this fact. On Wednesday night, Ms. Knowles stepped out wearing a head full of hip-length box braids that harken back to the early 2000s when she was just a budding star.

Since then, Beyoncé's little sister has become a bona fide star and her tresses have too. In 2009, she shocked everyone after cutting off her chemically treated hair -- which she told Oprah was an act of liberation, and ultimately became one of the catalysts of the natural hair movement. And in 2012 her hair was the center of a TSA hair frisking debacle, and also a major beauty campaign for Carol's Daughter

Whether she's rocking a halo of curls, a teeny weeny Afro, a sleek blowout or a set of regal braids, Solange is a never-ending source of hair looks that we can call take cues from.

Here's a look back at 41 of her marvelous manes. Which one do you love the best? Tell us in the comments section.

Fun Ways To Make Your Lips Dazzle This Winter

When it comes to our personal makeup routines, it's easy to get stuck doing the same old thing. So we brought a real expert on the show to help us out. Fatima Thomas is a veteran MAC Cosmetics makeup artist with over 20 years experience. Check out her tips on hiding wrinkles, keeping your skin glowing, and getting that perfect smoky eye, all in the videos above!

Wintry Lip Color
When it comes to a lip color for these dark days of winter, Fatima says we have to first acknowledge a horrible truth. "We're losing our summer tans, and our skin is becoming more sallow," she says. This isn't all bad- it just means that's it's time to be bolder with your color. "Try any of the classic reds, like Ruby Woo or Lady Danger," she recommends. But don't stop there! "You can even try some of my 90's favorites, like Verve and Del Rio," if you're looking for something more versatile. Those two varieties will "stay great through fall, winter, and into the spring," suggests Fatima.

Lululemon Is Launching An All-Black Collection On Black Friday

Black Friday kicks off the holiday season with typically great deals on things like travel, electronics and clothing.

Lululemon, the Canadian purveyor of cult-favorite leggings and the "runsie," is anything but typical. The brand is celebrating Black Friday in its very own way -- not by slashing prices, but by launching an eight-piece capsule collection.

The items are -- you guessed it -- all (or mostly) black. They're also made with breathable "360-degree high-impact reflectivity" fabric and range from $38 for ear warmers to, if you're feeling especially festive, $298 for a pair of running tights.

Lululemon will offer the capsule collection on Nov. 27th on its website and in stores, including its brand new, 11,000-square-foot flagship store in New York City.

Check out the collection below.

58 Benefits Of Being Single During The Holiday Season

0
0

'Tis the season to fly solo! While commercials try to convince you that the holidays are all about guys who love going to Jared, we both know what the holidays are really about: Eating cookie dough straight from the can in your flannel pajamas while watching "Elf."

Celebrate your fabulous recently/permanently unattached self with a quick reminder of how great is it to be a single lady. Here are 58 specific ways:

1. You don't have to stress out about buying the perfect, romantic present. That's a gift in itself!

2. All that money you would've spent on their present is ALL YOURS! Treat. yo. self.

3. You don't have to fake enthusiasm over the sh-tty present your partner gave you.

4. You don't have to split time between someone else's family and yours.

5. You also don't have to worry about impressing your SO's family.

6. You don't have to worry about buying your SO's mother a gift. More treats for you!

7. You don't have to travel with anyone.

8. You actually don't have to travel if you don't want to. Do you know how expensive flights are around the holidays?! *smh*

9. Your hella weird relatives won't embarrass you in front of "the new person."

10. Their excessive drinking won't make your SO run for the hills.

11. No partner means no awkward sleeping arrangements at your parents' house.

12. Or getting asked questions about when you're getting married or having babies.

13. You can invest more time in doing you. What a merry idea!

14. Whom you choose to spend time with is your choice, and yours alone!

15. You know what's worse than terrible Christmas photos? Terrible Christmas photos with EX-PARTNERS that remain on your parents' mantel for all of eternity after you break up.

16. No partner + thick pants = no shaving!

17. You don't have to go to anyone else's unnecessarily awful work parties.

18. But if you do attend your own office soirée, you can flirt fearlessly.

19. Lonely people around the holidays make for fabulous hookups.

20.  And if you really want to get into the season spirit, you can walk around with mistletoe.

21. You can leave a party when you want to.

22. You can experience the excitement of receiving a text from someone cute.

23. You'll have holiday dinner leftovers for days.

24. Not to mention all that extra egg nog, hot chocolate and wine.

25. Who gets to eat that last piece of pumpkin pie? You guessed it: YOU!

26. You can finally wear those embarrassing (and comfortable) holiday-themed undies that have been hiding out in your drawer.

27. And wear holiday sweaters that are tacky but also ridiculously awesome.

28. How about those ugly ass holiday socks that keep your toes cozy? No judgement from anyyyyyone.

29. Fancy, pricey lingerie? Lol, yeah right. What a waste!

30. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want and the exact quantities that suit you. No one will poke at that winter weight!

31. You get to hog the whole. entire. bed.

32. Every pillow is a cool pillow when all the pillows are yours.

33. Hibernation is an actual thing you can practice with zero interruptions.

34. Spooning? More like, SPOONING THAT TUB OF RUM-FLAVORED ICE CREAM!

35. You won't have any relationship worries. "Why did he pose with his high school sweetheart on Facebook? Why hasn't he replied to my text in three days? Why doesn't his mom know that I exist?" -- None of that BS.

36. You're in charge of your own holiday spirit. No one else can wreck your mood.

37. Want to decorate your Christmas tree with pictures of Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon? As you please.

38. You're the sole architect of your gingerbread house.

39. Ice skating hand in hand is so cheesy. #overit

40. Snowball fights are literally no fun for anyone involved. Now you don't have to pretend to be "game" just so your SO thinks you're "cool."

41. Spend your holiday break any way you choose. Do you want to read? Do you want to sleep? Do you want to watch TV? Do you want to knit? Do you want to bake and eat what you baked as soon as it's out of the oven? Because you can.

42. Solo trips are the best way to get to know the real you.

43. Use your down time to learn a new skill. Or a new language.

44. Or dive into a Netflix rabbit hole and not change your sweatpants once in the course of the week.

45. Speaking of which -- you have 100% control of the remote.

46. You can literally watch "Love Actually" 14 times in a row and cry your heart out and feel shameless about it.

47. You can throw a rager-for-one in your own home to Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

48. What's cozier than snuggling up with your pet? Nothing, that's what.

49. Heat up some hot chocolate, and then heat up 10 more. You're the master of your domain, baby!

50. Essentially, no compromises need to be made. Over anything.

51. Leave the house? In this freezing cold? WHAT FOR?

52. So cold, in fact, that you can skip washing your hair for a week and hide it under a beanie AND NO ONE WILL BE THE WISER.

53. You can work on Christmas day for a little extra $$$ and no one will make you feel guilty.

54. You can be selfish with your New Year's Eve plans. Would you rather stay in bed than dance the night away? Do it. Do you want to go to the hottest party in town with your BFFs and make out with a complete stranger at midnight? Do that, instead!

55. Your new year's resolution can be all about your fierce and fearless self, not you and someone else. (Because couples who say, "We chose to quit smoking" are almost as annoying as smoking.)

56. Can you think about all the possibilities that a new year might bring? GET EXCITED!

57. YOU ARE CELEBRATING YOU!

58. There's literally no one else you should step into 2016 with.

Olivia Wilde Tells Us Why It's Important To Be Real On Social Media

Olivia Wilde was in New York on Wednesday to celebrate the winners of Revlon's Love Is On Million Dollar Challenge, a campaign is dedicated to raising awareness for women's cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

The star, who is also a Revlon ambassador, looked lovely in a sleeveless white dress with a full skirt. She wore her hair in a sleek, side-parted style and completed the look with a classic red lip.

This is how we're used to seeing Wilde -- glammed up on the red carpet or starring in an ad campaign -- but the star isn't afraid to show the world what she looks like without all the makeup and designer duds. Just one look at her Instagram account, and you can see what we're talking about.

We got a chance to speak to the Wilde about the importance of sharing both aspects of her life with her fans, and basically everyone on the Internet.

"That's the realistic world of any woman. I am all of these things at once. I'm a mother, I'm a professional, I'm a boss, I'm an employee. I'm all these different things," she told The Huffington Post. "I think social media is a way to express an honest version of ourselves in a way that can allow people to see the entire picture. The dynamic version of all of us."

And aside from sharing glimpses into her own life (like this honest depiction of what it means to be a new mom), Wilde admitted that she loves scrolling through other people's feeds, too.

"I really enjoy looking at other people's Instagrams, and saying, 'Oh, that's cool! That's how they are when they're not all glammed up.' I think it's important for people to see that, obviously, not everyone you see in these ad campaigns looks like that all the time -- that would be ridiculous," she said.

She added, "The point is that it's fun to get dressed up and it's fun to use these products and they make you feel beautiful, but that's just one part of your life."

Since we landed on the topic of dressing up, we wanted to know if Wilde would ever throw on her Alex Kelly duds -- the purple hair streak and butterfly tattoo, in particular -- for an "O.C." reunion.

"Oh, my gosh! I mean, they should do that right? That would be really funny," she said, laughing. "I'd have to get my butterfly tattoo, probably just permanently. I'll work on that -- first I'll get the tattoo, and then hope the reunion comes together. That's the reasonable way to go about it."

We can dream, right?

The Most Famous Blondes Of All Time

Since Hollywood's Golden Era, blondes have been held in high regard. The striking and sexy hair color helped to propel the careers of famous (but not true) blondes such as Marilyn Monroe and Jean Harlow. And it's become the signature look for today's hottest actresses and entertainers, including Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lawrence. Even Kim Kardashian experimented with a short-lived bleach blonde hairdo.

We asked our Facebook and Twitter followers to nominate their picks for the most famous blondes of all time -- both natural and faux. Ms. Monroe was an obvious choice, but we got all nostalgic when style icons like Dolly Parton and Anna Nicole Smith were name-dropped. Check out our list below, and tell us if we've missed anyone in the comments section.
