How To Curb Your Tween's Obsession With Makeup

$

0
When it comes to our personal makeup routines, it's easy to get stuck doing the same old thing. So we brought a real expert on the show to help us out. Fatima Thomas is a veteran MAC Cosmetics makeup artist with over 20 years experience. Check out her tips on hiding wrinkles, keeping your skin glowing, and getting that perfect smoky eye, all in the videos above!

Is 12 too young for makeup?

Makeup use should be a personal thing, a choice each individual makes. But as a parent, watching a "tween" daughter use makeup excessively crosses a few lines. "As a kid, I was always obsessed with makeup," Fatima admits, so she can definitely identify with how a young girl can feel. But her advice is to "strike a deal" with the overusing party. "Let her play at home, fulfill that need in the comfort of the home," suggests Fatima. It may be best not to cut her off completely - "Let her start wearing some lip products, some light, sheer things." But there may come a day when you don't have as much control, and for advice on what to say, I'll turn to someone notable in my life. When my sister and I asked our father if we could use makeup, he'd say to us, "bite your lips and pinch your cheeks, nature gave you all the color you need!"

Adrienne Bosh Sparkles and Shines in Miami

On Monday November 16, 2015, Adrienne Bosh, wife of the Miami HEAT's Chris Bosh, opened the doors to a project she's been working on for two years. Through babies, basketball, and her husband Chris Bosh's sudden health scare, she's persevered and continued to pursue her champagne dreams. And now everyone in Miami and beyond can bask in the experience that is called Sparkle and Shine Darling, a lifestyle boutique on Alton Road!

2015-11-18-1447854824-8251558-adrienneboshsparkleandshine.0.jpg

The boutique does indeed sparkle and shine from shimmering floors to glittering ceilings, and is an exquisite representation of all things feminine and fabulous. It is pure visual eye candy in pink and gold, and every shopper's fantasy offering dazzling gifts for women, men, and children, plus decadent treats at the cafe. As Gabrielle Union said, "It's like Adrienne Bosh, but exploded!"

There are also three event spaces fit for any princess, including a tea party room that would make the Mad Hatter's head spin!

The idea for the boutique came to Adrienne when visiting Paris on her 29th birthday, her husband surprised her with a tea party. Since then it's been full steam ahead for Miami's ultimate mompreneur, who illuminates more love and light than any of the shiny baubles she now sells in her gorgeous space.

Here's my interview with the savvy and stunning Bosh about opening the boutique and cafe, the elusive balance between motherhood and work, and what inspires her through adversity.

To those that haven't visited yet, what is Sparkle and Shine Darling?

Adrienne: Sparkle and Shine Darling is a haven and a space for women to come together in a place to shop, to celebrate, or to find a place for women to come to find a gift for themselves or a woman in their life.

But you can do more than just shop here - it's meant to be a party space as well?

Adrienne: We have three event spaces and a café, my goal is to have a space that you're not just coming in to shop, but you're coming to meet your girlfriends. You're coming to vent to them, you're coming to to tell then the new news...I look at it as a space that's a haven in the community for women.

2015-11-18-1447855391-4294367-Boshquote2.jpg

Everyone sees you so put together, but how do you do it all? Be a mom, a wife, pregnant with twins, and open this amazing store?

Adrienne: All moms have a way they fit in the work whether it's nap time, bedtime, or when the kids are in school, I get a lot done at night. I'm a night owl. For me it's learning that everyday you don't have to be perfect at everything you do. One day I might be amazing at being a mom, but I'm not an amazing entrepreneur that day, but that's OK. And then one day I'm an amazing entrepreneur, but I think that as long you're giving from your heart it doesn't matter.

2015-11-18-1447855004-6316890-1.6DSC_68591060x705.jpg

How supportive has your husband been?

Adrienne: He's been amazing! Chris has been there every step of the way, from cutting out pictures for my vision board, to literally his first day home from (training) camp he came straight here and brought me food. He's been extremely supportive, as he's said I've always supported him both professionally and personally, I know that he's happy to show that back to me now.

You and CB both love to read, name top 3 books that have influenced you?

Adrienne: The Mastery of Love, Girl Boss, Nice Is Just a Place in France, ummm there's more than 3! Girl Code that I was interviewed for, The Champagne Diet, The Alchemist, and The Four Agreements. All of these are available in the store, and every book in this store is something that I've read or something by the same author. I really don't carry much in the store that I don't personally enjoy or love.

I've hand selected all items, I've been the only buyer for the store. I literally have gone to buying shows, I've done stuff in the country...I've done stuff out of the country, I've hand selected everything to curate the collection. I know when a lot of things are coming in - people say, "oh we are getting a box of dog stuff? How does that go with sparkle and shine darling?" But I'm a dog lover so for me I had to have a dog section at sparkle and shine darling! It may not be the most sparkly, but I had to have it! So for me, I hand selected things I personally loved but things women would love as well.

2015-11-18-1447855036-2061291-Z0YsnNdXhiiWmEon9B8kRsp_85TsVlWMk2xKDIN3E1clJ0yWVS5BcSt5nOP95bSxLtaJoT9D0Z4MveOsZdi5E.jpg

This is the first business you've ever started, what have you learned about yourself through this process?

Adrienne: I've learned that if it's not really your passion, you might not be able to make it to the finish line. So I can honestly say this is my passion, and that's why I made it to the finish line. You're going to hit bumps, you're going to hit moments where you feel like you're going to pull your hair out. The thing is if it's really your passion, you can get up and do it all over again the next day. So just like being a mom , when you hit bumps and you have those days, you get up the next day and you couldn't imagine not being a mom. And that's the same way I am with my store. So I would say as long as you're following something that's truly your passion, then stick with it and it will work out.

Speaking of moms, how scared are you to have twins?!

Adrienne: I think I'm a little overwhelmed by the idea, but we learn as we go. Same as the first pregnancy, so at least it wasn't my first! At least I'm coming into it with a little bit of an idea of what's going on. I've been able to juggle all of these things in my life, so I should be able to juggle twins!

As a shopper, a woman, and a fan of Adrienne Bosh and all of the positivity she exudes, I highly recommending visiting her beautiful boutique. And yes, you can afford it! I found items for several on my shopping list from funny coffee cups and adorable candles, to pens and bracelets for our girls. There truly is something for everyone and when you leave - you will feel just as luxurious as your surroundings. It's not just a store, it's an experience!

Model Scares Off Thousands Of Followers With 'Real' Photos

Apparently, this one woman's Instagram followers didn't like it when she decided to stop being polite and started to get real.

Stina Sanders is a model living in London who has posed for publications like Maxim and FHM. Her Instagram feed is filled with photos of her on shoots and in tropical locations.

But recently, after reading the story of teen model Essena O'Neill, who quit Instagram because of the falsities it promoted, Sanders decided to change the photos she posted on her own account. Instead of sharing glammed up shots, she posted photos of her facial hair treatment, colonic, chipped nail polish and therapy session.

Oh the IBS is bad! So it's colonic irrigation time.....

De-fuzzing Monday!

A photo posted by STINA SANDERS (@stinasanders) on

She wound up losing thousands of followers, going from over 13,000 to under 10,000, according to People magazine. But the photos elicited support and likes from other women.

“To see a photo of my bowel movements and not me in a bikini must have annoyed a lot of them," Sanders told Tab magazine. “It’s that kind of ‘I didn’t sign up for this’ attitude. Perhaps sharing my real life was too much for them. It’s interesting to see that real life is not to everyone’s taste. Perhaps Instagram is an escapism from reality. I see so many women comparing themselves to other people’s images, whether that’s the girl down the road or a Victoria Secret’s model. It’s just silly. No one is perfect."

While she is willing to be unedited on social media, Sanders said she understands why people liked a more curated version of herself.

"People don’t want to see reality because they see that every day," she told The Huffington Post in an email on Thursday. "Plus people want inspiration. It's only human to look at others and want the same, if not better."

By Angel Chang, writer at LittleThings.com

As I'm sure many of you women out there can relate, I find it so very annoying when I find flyaways in my hair. They become especially irritating when I already have my hair all done up and put in place...

But have no fear! If you're having the same problem with flyaways, know that you can very easily tame them with common household items.

In an exclusive video below, we'll show you an exceptionally simple trick to tame your flyaways with just a bottle of hairspray and a toothbrush.

Besides coming in handy in flyaway situations, hairspray can also be used to fix little run-ins in a pair of stockings, and many other things.

All you have to do is spray the hairspray once or twice on the toothbrush and carefully comb over the part of your hair that have been made uneven.

Because the toothbrush has such fine bristles, it can be used to comb away the tiniest of hairs that a regular hairbrush might miss.

Scroll further to watch the easy trick in the video below. Will you be trying out this lifehack yourself next time?

Let us know in the comments, and please SHARE this tip with friends and family!

Here's a Brilliant Way To Hide Your Wrinkles And Aging

When it comes to our personal makeup routines, it's easy to get stuck doing the same old thing. So we brought a real expert on the show to help us out. Fatima Thomas is a veteran MAC Cosmetics makeup artist with over 20 years experience. Check out her tips on hiding wrinkles, keeping your skin glowing, and getting that perfect smoky eye, all in the videos above!

"Smoke and Mirrors"
There is only so much you can do to combat father time. Once a line appears on your face, "it can't go away," says Fatima. But that doesn't mean you can exercise a little human ingenuity and keep those wrinkles in check! Fatima gave us a few key tips to "disguise" your aging.

  • Use something with SPF daily While you can't erase a line, you can prevent the formation of more. "Sun damage is one of the biggest causes of lines on the face," warns Fatima. The solution? A heavy-duty Prep + Prime Face Lotion, which carries an SPF of 50. Fatima calls this the "big guns," so feel free to use something milder if you'd like. But wearing spf shouldn't be a special occasions thing; it really should be worn every day.

  • Use an optically diffusing product - While a line can never go a away, there are some other tricks to pull. One of them is using a product that optically blurs the light hitting your face. You can use a cream like this on your skin before using foundation. Fatima recommends the MAC Mineralize Time Check Lotion, a moisturizer that, through a true optical illusions, decreases the prominence of certain lines. Magic indeed!

The Duchess Of Cambridge Just Climbed Her Way Into Our Hearts (Again)

Just when we thought we couldn't love the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge more, they went rock climbing and melted our hearts.

On a trip to north Wales Friday to meet with organizations tackling mental health issues, the couple found a little time for some exercise, rappelling and climbing a rock wall at the Towers Residential Outdoor Education Centre.

Their matching red coats and dorky helmets are a far cry from their usual royal attire, but we have to say, they look pretty darn adorable in their climbing get-ups. (Though, to be honest, we're just pleased the duchess chose appropriate footwear for the occasion, as she has a history of getting active in heels).

So, do you think the Kate's Petzl helmut will sell out everywhere? We have a feeling this might be one of the few cases where the duchess effect doesn't quite apply.

The Best Skinny Jeans That Are Flattering On ALL Body Types

$

We have a love-hate relationship with skinny jeans. While the body-hugging denim is definitely a wardrobe staple that can be dressed up and down, the task of getting into a pair isn't always so easy.

But alas, the real problem is finding a pair that actually flatters our bodies. As much as we'd love to just find one brand and style that fits us all, there's no chance in hell that our curves will fit the same jeans everyone else's curves fit into.

In an effort to get to the bottom of this issue (pun intended), we asked jean-loving women in our newsroom to tell us which skinnies they love and why they work for their particular body types.

Check out the picks below and tell us about your favorite skinny jeans in the comments section.

Louis Vuitton, the Original Box-Maker

Who Was Louis Vuitton?

When one thinks of Louis Vuitton, high-end fashion generally comes to mind, but the original trade of Mr. Vuitton was as a dedicated and successful trunk maker. In his days of course, travel was a very different affair -- in the early 19th century, one would take a coach, private or not, to attempt crossing France on semi-paved roads that required heavy duty luggage to protect the cargo inside.

At the age of 13, Vuitton left home and walked for a two-year trek, from his small hamlet in eastern France's mountainous Jura region, some 300 miles away. Arriving in Paris, Vuitton found work as an apprentice in the workshop of a successful packer named Monsieur Maréchal.

In those days, box-making and packing was a highly respectable craft, as the maker and packer had to specially make all the boxes to fit the goods they stored and personally loaded and unloaded the boxes in clients' carriages. It took Vuitton only a few years to master his craft.

In 1852, Napoleon assumed the title of Emperor of the French and his wife Joséphine hired Louis Vuitton as her personal box-maker and packer. This started Vuitton's entry into the world of elite and royal clientele. He attained fame with his large traveling trunks.

2015-11-20-1448038748-5253564-lv4originaltrunks.jpg

The square corners new shape he invented for his trunks made them stackable and far more convenient for shipping using the new means of transport like railroad and ocean liners. In 1859, thanks to his large commercial success with his new trunks, he expanded into a larger workshop in Asnières. This is where the family house was also located, attached to the workshops.

The business stayed in the family. With Vuitton's son Georges, who created the company's famous LV monogram and future generations of Vuittons, the brand would grow into the renowned luxury leather and lifestyle brand it is today.

Not Just Clothes.

The success of the Louis Vuitton trunks came from several different specific traits: not only were they stackable, with square corners instead of the usual rounded ones -- a clever and easy way to manage several large containers that no one had thought of before Vuitton -- but they were created which the buyer in mind -- did he/she wanted to transport shoes? liquor? coats? riffles? ball gowns? an entire library of books? The special requests came varied, some strange, many somewhat obsessively detailed, all expensive.

The Factory in Asnières.

In 1859, Louis Vuitton transformed the top floor of his factory in Asnières into living quarters, to remain near his artisans. His son Georges and his wife Émilie also settled onsite, building a villa with a smaller home tucked away for the young couple. Living close to the company's beating heart became part of the Vuitton family life.

Located on the banks of the Seine River, Asnières' location allowed for bundles of poplar wood, used for the trunks, to be delivered by water - on a Louis Vuitton barge of course. The very first railway line also passed through the town to end at Paris' Saint-Lazare station, a stone's throw from the original flagship store, rue Scribe in Paris.

2015-11-20-1448039203-4685438-lvfactoryworkers.jpg

Louis Vuitton had his new ateliers built in the ethereal and fashionable Eiffel style, of glass and steel. Over the years, the buildings expanded to allow more employees such as saddlers, carpenters and locksmiths to construct luggage. The exceptional savoir-faire of the Asnières' artisans is such that, to this day, key pieces are still created there: rigid trunks, designs in rare or exotic leathers, special orders.

The Gallery.

All of Louis Vuitton's archives have always been meticulously conserved to keep precious objects and documents in the best possible conditions. Clients' records, sales registers, posters and original photographs are kept alongside trunks, suitcases, bags and ready-to-wear collections.

The archives contain some 165,000 documents and 23,000 objects, from which gallery curator Judith Clark has hand-picked the many significant pieces displayed at La Galerie, the newly-opened space where visits are now allowed, albeit only by reservations. Some items on view are personal possessions of princes and maharajas, film stars and other celebrities.

Revealing a house's history was a challenge Clark was able to tackle in the creative space. The malletage is omnipresent throughout the exhibition, the word malle means trunk, and the job of malletage is to make them. Couture collections, bags and accessories are also on display throughout the cavernous space.

Special Orders.

In Asnières today, bags of exotic leathers, pieces for the brand couture shows, special orders and limited edition pieces are still made on site. Each year, about 450 large travel trunks are made for discerning globe-trotters. Special request for any piece of luggage is also fabricated here by hand, with colors and details to the customer's desire. Any bag from the regular collection can be made in requested colors. All handbags are handmade by specialized artisans, which is what drives their prices up.

2015-11-20-1448039086-9324382-LVcigarstrunk.jpg

2015-11-20-1448039429-2988657-LVlibrarytrunk.jpg

Some orders take longer than other: some require several months to be made, such as a trunk to carry dozen of shoes, or another meant as a special temperature-controlled box for 1,000 of precious cigars. Another client wanted a trunk to take along his coffee addiction props, complete with solar panels and a battery, as well as all the necessary ingredients for his favorite cup of java.

The trunks were always made of poplar, a light and flexible raw wood, taking well shocks and tumbles. That is the same material still used for cheese boxes and matches.

I'm a mask-loving healthy-hair fanatic. But a new piece of information has me washing my hair less often than I did a week ago and thanking Marc Jacobs for bringing back grunge hair with his spring show.

It turns out, there's an unavoidable healthy-hair saboteur that you encounter every time you turn on your shower. Water. Yes, water. You could import crystal-clear water that's bubbled up through Himalayan rocks and been bottled by mermaids, and it would still damage your hair slowly over time. "When you wet your hair, it swells from the inside, forcing the cuticle up. When that happens over and over again, you get breakage and split ends," says cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller. "Don't wash your hair more than you have to--whenever you can skip a day, that's great." (Or in my case, three days, if I'm being totally honest.)

So the next logical thought any person would have is: Seriously, now I have to worry about water damaging my hair, too? Kinda. But at least there are two ways to counteract the damage. Pre-shampoo--yep, that's a thing now--works like a sealant, "smoothing the hair's cuticle before it gets wet so there's less damage," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson. We like Nexxus Pre-Wash Primer. Another tactic is switching from shampoo to a cleansing conditioner, like L'Orèal EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner, which can help protect the hair from water, too, "because it coats it while it cleanses," says Wilson. It doesn't even have to be made by mermaids.

Kylie Jenner And Tyga Finally Split After A Year Together

Kylie Jenner and Tyga have reportedly split and, unlike most Hollywood breakups, we can't say we're too bummed out.

Rumors that the pair had called it quits emerged earlier this morning after it was reported that Jenner, 18, was not at Tyga's birthday party. According to TMZ, the couple split suddenly on Thursday after Jenner returned from Australia.

While TMZ's source wouldn't elaborate on what went down between the two, the source claims "It's something Tyga did," while another source claims it's Kylie who ended things, as she was allegedly feeling "pressure" from her family.

E! News is also reporting the split and, when it comes to anything Kardashian-related, you can pretty much guarantee they know what they are talking about.

Rumors that Jenner and the 26-year-old rapper were dating began popping up in October 2014, just three months after the reality star celebrated her 17th birthday. While the couple tried to play it off as though they were just friends, Jenner's brother-in-law Kanye West spilled the beans this past February in a radio interview. When asked if he thought the relationship was "inappropriate," he burst out laughing.

"I think he got in early, I think he was smart. They are closer in age than a lot of relationships that I know. I knew Tyga was smart," Kanye said. "Yeah, I can't speak on nobody's relationship."

The couple waited until Jenner finally turned 18 on Aug. 10 to go public with their relationship, and you better believe they were vocal about their feelings for each other -- starting with the $320,000 ferrari Tyga bought Jenner as a gift for finally not being underage.

And once they didn't have to hide their relationship, things got explicit and uncomfortable for everyone else. A few days after she turned 18, Jenner appeared in Tyga's video for "Stimulated." The lyrics read like an ode to statutory rape, with lines including “They say she young, I shoulda waited / She a big girl, dog, when she stimulated," and "She a big girl, dog / I'm gonna do what the fuck I wanna do when I wanna do / She a big girl, dog / I'm puttin' in, I'm penetratin'/ I'm gettin' big, I'm stimulated."

The rapper continued to rap about his sex life with Jenner, rapping "She like to fuck me, suck me, suck then fuck me / I'm the ice cream man, she chunky monkey" on "Ice Cream Man."

No word so far on what Tyga might have done to cause Jenner to break up with him, but it must have been pretty bad. This message from Kylie's sister Kendall Jenner is thought to be directed at him, although it's unclear.

Request for comment made by The Huffington Post to Tyga and Jenner's reps has yet to be returned at this time.

Tyra Banks was too fierce for the "FABLife," as TMZ is reporting that Banks has left the talk show after only two months.

Banks is an executive producer for the show, which also features model Chrissy Teigen, editor in chief of Yahoo Style Joe Zee, home expert Lauren Makk and YouTube star Leah Ashley.

"This is a very difficult decision, but necessary," said a rep for Banks in statement to The Huffington Post.

Tyra, via her rep, sent the following statement: "I will be devoting more time to my new, growing cosmetics company, Tyra Beauty, which is expanding faster than anticipated, as well as overseeing my company's other entertainment ventures. I will however continue to support the growth and success of 'FABLife' and greatly admire my fellow co-hosts and the talented production team behind the show."

Banks is already looking for people to come work for her beauty startup, according to her Twitter.

The announcement comes less than a month after the CW canceled Banks' long-running "America's Next Top Model" after 22 seasons.

Luckily, her rep confirmed that Banks is still working on "Life-Size 2" with the Disney Channel.

"FABLife" has yet to make a statement regarding Banks' departure, so we're just going to pretend they said this:

I Washed My Hair With Mud and the Results Were Amazing

2015-11-20-1448047749-8514808-mudpoo.jpg

Mud--and the clay in it--is one of the oldest beauty ingredients in existence. It's been used forever in face and hair masks, not to mention the good old multifunctional Aztec Healing Clay. People favor the ingredient for its ability to absorb excess oils and deep-clean pores. But what happens if you wash your oil-prone hair with clay? Would it provide the same squeaky-clean benefits as a clay face mask? I went on a mission to find out.

I decided to give Shea Terra Organics Moroccan Mud-Poo a try. This mud-based shampoo has been around for a while, but the company just reformulated it so that it comes in powder form, rather than the premixed version it sold before (apparently people didn't like their hair mud coming to them after having already been mixed with water). And while you may be wondering who in the world first thought of washing their hair with clay, according to Shea Terra Organics, it's a ritual that goes back to ancient cultures. The company mines the clay it uses from deep within the Atlas Mountains. Here's what the product looks like straight from the bottle:

2015-11-20-1448047823-389200-clayspoon.jpg

The included instructions say to spoon one to four tablespoons (depending on your hair length) into a cup, and then add water gradually until it creates a "muddy slurry" that's supposed to look like chocolate milk. I used three tablespoons (my hair goes down to the low end of my back, and I still had some left over), threw in some water, and stirred up my muddy shampoo. Here's what it looked like (appetizing, right?):

2015-11-20-1448047848-5450281-mudpoospoon.gif

Then I hopped in the shower, brought my glass of "mud poo" with me, and massaged it into my wet hair. I must say, it felt strange. I'm so used to washing my hair with sudsy, detergent-laced shampoos that grinding powdery grains of clay into my hair felt like I was making it dirtier. If it weren't for the soothing mint scent, I would've been totally grossed out. After fully coating my hair in mud, I let it sit for about two to three minutes and then rinsed it out, following with my usual conditioner. My hair didn't feel noticeably different, except it was a little coarse.

It wasn't until I blow-dried my hair that I started to notice the benefits of shampooing your hair with clay. I'm prone to dandruff and I tend to have a very oily scalp, which means I usually have to do scalp masks every week or so to get rid of all that gunk. But after using this clay shampoo, my scalp felt squeaky-clean, and I was able to go a full three days without washing my hair, using only dry shampoo. Around the time when I would normally start scratching at my scalp (usually by the second day), I wasn't at all itchy. Cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller explains why: "Clay can absorb oil and help clean your scalp, and it contains tea tree oil, which does have some antifungal and antibacterial properties."

I do have one caveat about the mud-poo: It can be drying, so make sure you use a good amount of conditioner on the ends of your hair after using it. If you have dry hair, Shea Terra Organic's website suggests dropping a few squeezes of hair oil into your slurry before applying it, so I'm planning to try that next time. Because there will be a next time. I'm proud to report that I now love washing my hair with mud. Put simply, clay shampoo just saves time for a dandruff-prone, oily-scalped girl like me.

Rose McGowan Shaves Off All Her Hair, Looks Stunning Bald

You remember that scene in "Les Misérables" where Fantine has all her hair cut off? Rose McGowan pretty much just did that IRL. Only she was happy about it, not crying enough to win Anne Hathaway an Oscar.

The actress and director has been sporting a pretty short hairdo for a while now. But this week, she decided to shave off the rest. And she documented the whole process on Instagram. Lucky for us! Here she is sitting in her hairstylist's chair as he first puts buzzer to scalp.

This could have gone a lot of different directions, you know? It's a risky move. But it turned out pretty great. Apparently, McGowan is one of those women -- like Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman -- with a face so beautiful that it looks even better with almost no hair at all. She unveiled her new look by joking, "The alien has landed."

McGowan hasn't yet spoken about why, specifically, she went for this new look. (We reached out to her, and will update this post if we hear back.) But she described it on Instagram as "liberating" to have such short hair.

No hair don't care. Honestly, it's liberating.

For the record, we totally care! But in a positive way.

We're certainly more supportive of this than we were the last time McGowan made headlines mere days ago, for criticizing Caitlyn Jenner being honored at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards. Maybe this new haircut is even some kind of Cersei-style penance for that misstep? If so, the excellence of the look kind of defeats the purpose of the punishment.

Blondes Still Trending Lost Past Summer

Blondes are hangin' on.

Summer has long faded into fall as we head into the Holiday season, a time when hairstyles typically shift toward darker colors. We're certainly seeing those deep, rich browns and some reds but the lighter shades, including baby blondes, are still holding strong on the trend meter.

It looked like summer at the recent Country Music Association Awards, there were so many blondes on the red carpet: Carrie Underwood, Jewel and Kellie Pickler. Miranda Lambert wore hers with the ends blushing fuchsia-pink, keeping with a trend of soft looks but with a pop of color.

It will be interesting to see whether we find the same affinity for these light, bright shades at the American Music Awards this weekend. Maybe this is just a country thang, but I doubt it. I bet we see lots of blondes on the red carpet leading to the festivities at the AMAs in Los Angeles.

One style we're seeing a lot of with the blondes is a dark base, right at the roots near the part. The color transitions are very soft and natural looking, keeping with that long trend. We don't think about dark roots being attractive - that's typically a reason to call for an appointment with your stylist. This is a great look, though. Both Jewel and Carrie Underwood had their hair this way, and it'll be interesting to see whether it shows up in L.A. at the AMAs.

The other style we're seeing with blondes is highlights, some lighter pieces being integrated through the ends with a couple of face-framing highlights as well. All of this is very softly done, so it's not a sharp, edgy look. This is a great way to keep depth in the look while remaining light overall.

Are we getting the darker colors typical this time of year? Oh, yes. Some of those are bold and single-tone but others are blending some very subtle, color variations, including some barely-red shades.

This is a season when we could see some breakaway trends, something totally new and, frankly, I think we're due. We've been going with the soft natural looks a long, long time. Even the way we're dipping the ends in pastel colors gives us a pretty soft look. Matching the soft natural colors are cuts that are pretty soft, natural and mostly longer.

Can't wait to see what the stars do with their hair at the AMAs. Be open to change!

11 Fearless Images That Push Us To Rethink What 'Beautiful' Means

A new campaign is celebrating all bodies by selling a little bit of self-love.

Created by Wear Your Voice Magazine, #BeyondBeauty is a campaign that hopes to challenge brands that promote body positivity to include a more diverse range of women in their advertisements. The campaign includes a photo series which features 18 women of all body shapes.

"It is a campaign whose only selling point is self-love," a WYV press release reads. "We're not endorsing a product, we are supporting authenticity in all its forms. We are daring to look beyond this traditional and limiting idea of 'beauty' to see the strength that not only lies within, but that exudes from all."

The series features different types of photos, such as a body-positive take on before and after images where nothing about the women have actually changed. Other images feature women of all shapes, colors and abilities in an ad-style photo with boxes such as "Flawed" and "Flawless" checked off next to one another.

"As a media publication, we understand the responsibility media plays in our lives," WYV founder and editor-in-chief Ravneet Vohra wrote in a recent WYV article. "As a mother of two young children, I want to make sure that the next generation of young people don't inherit our insecurities."

Citing the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Vohra wrote that 69 percent of girls between the fifth and twelfth grades reported that images in magazines influenced their idea of what the perfect body looks like.

#BeyondBeauty is urging body-positive campaigns such as Dove's Real Beauty and Lane Bryant's #PlusIsEqual to include an even more diverse range of women. "The photos from the [Lane Bryant] ad campaign... lack diversity and appear to feature all models below a size 18," WYV senior columnist Rachel Otis wrote in a recent article. "Lane Bryant, whose clothing goes up to a size 28, did not make it a point to feature any model above a size 18."

It's clear that self-love really is beautiful from the campaign's photo series. Scroll below to see more women going #BeyondBeauty and loving themselves -- just the way they are.

6 Things Black Women Love And Hate About Our Natural Hair

$
0
0

Natural hair is complex and beautiful. There are those good days when you're head-over-heels in love with your hair. But then there are other days when you unapologetically reach for the nearest hair wrap to cover up the tangled mess hiding beneath it.

There's a fine line between the things you can love and hate about your natural hair, from the attention it will always get to its versatility.

Here are six things almost every natural can relate to:

1. Hate: The Attention

While most people are great about keeping their admiration for luscious big curls or an awesome afro to themselves, others are not so well-mannered. There’s the ever-annoying question: "Can I touch it?" Let’s be clear, petting and reaching for the hair on the top of another human being's head is never acceptable. So keep your hands to yourself.

2. Love: The Attention (The Flip Side)

As the girl with the big fro, it can be very hard to go anywhere unnoticed. Sneaking into a room? Forget about it. You will always be easy to spot in a crowd. That big beautiful hair or super cool low fade will always get you tons of attention, smiles and sometimes it's a decent icebreaker to start up a conversation. It can be pretty awesome.

3. Hate: Misconceptions and Stigmas

We often hear stories about people who are discriminated against in the workplace and in school or are denied opportunities because of their natural hair. Let's not forget when actress Zendaya’s locs were described to smell like weed and patchouli oil by "Fashion Police" host Giuliana Rancic. However, as of recently more and more people with natural hair are becoming present in the media from Maria Borges, the "Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show" model, to singer The Weeknd to Lupita Nyong'o. Now, all types and textures of natural hair are cropping up on the big screen, the small screen and even magazine covers. This larger representation will hopefully break down those negative notions about natural hair.

4. Love: Versatility

You can braid it, twist it, coil it, and so there are many other styles! Natural hair is so flexible that you could probably rock a new look every other week. If you’re really feeling fancy, you can even switch it up by having a sleek, straight hair look, too. When you're natural, your hair becomes another accessory in your ever-changing look. You probably often get comments from people complimenting you on how often you mix up your look. Embrace it.

5. Hate: Detangling

It is a process done only for the greater health and good of your hair. It can be annoying and tedious -- the slathering of product on your hair, the sectioning and combing each section so that you can be tangle-free. It can be so frustrating and it only gets more time consuming with the longer your hair gets, but don't reach for those scissors just yet. Because just cutting it all off sometimes seems incredibly tempting for me, too. But it's the end result of hair that you can almost run your fingers through without running into any snags that makes it all so very worth it.

6. Love: The Roots

Being able to touch my natural hair and feel my roots is absolutely indescribable because, as a woman of color, something as simple as loving your hair can be a hard pill to swallow. The hair politics and the fear of no longer looking pretty actually prevents a lot of women from embracing their natural hair. However, whenever I touch my hair I realize that there is something very beautiful about its unique texture, and I take enormous comfort in knowing that's exactly how it's intended it to grow from my head.
