Donna Karan Opens Up About Having An Abortion In 1973

Legendary fashion designer Donna Karan opened up about her abortion in a conversation with HuffPost Live on Friday.

The My Journey author was married to Mark Karan at the time, but involved in an affair with artist Stephan Weiss, whom she would ultimately leave her first husband to marry. As a result, when she became pregnant, "we weren't sure who's child it was," she recounted.

"I said, 'I can't even fathom doing this,' and abortion had just been legalized -- it was that week," she continued. "I told Mark about it and I said, 'I really think this is what I have to do, and he agreed with me and supported me completely on it."

Terminating the pregnancy was "difficult," Karan admitted, "but that was the life I was living at that moment in time."

By talking about her abortion, the fashion legend hopes to connect with other women.

"I know so many times that women really go 'What do I do? How do I handle this?' and I wanted to show that I'm with them," she said. "I totally understand what it's like -- I went through it."

Donna Karan: Anna Wintour Is 'Tough' But Misunderstood

Donna Karan feels Anna Wintour's reputation for being hostile is undeserved "to a large extent," she told HuffPost Live in a Friday conversation.

"I think she has the most extraordinary heart on such a large level," the designer declared. "I think she has compassion. I think she has understanding. I think she has vision. I think she sees it from really dressing and addressing the consumer at large."

The designer and "My Journey" author didn't leave the praise at just that.

"I think the magazine and how she communicates -- I think she embodies the whole world," Karan continued.  "It's not just Kim Kardashian, let us say, but certainly she's a major advocate of Hillary [Clinton's]."

Wintour, Vogue's editor-in-chief, has a cold public image that's a byproduct of her supreme managerial skills, said Karan.

"Anna is tough, and I think given who she is and what she shoulders, is huge," she said. "Taking it all on, you need some sort of screen. I wish I had one of those!"

Donna Karan Opens Up About Falling For Another Man While Married

In a new interview with HuffPost Live, fashion icon Donna Karan opened up about falling for husband Stephan Weiss -- while married to another man.

The pair first met when Karen was 19 years old and engaged to Mark Karan, her ex-husband. The designer said she and Weiss' first meeting was nothing short of electric.

"It was a major snow storm in the city, and he walked into the room and I just went topsy turvy. I didn't know what to do, I'd never experienced anything like it in my entire life," Karan said. "He was the man of -- I couldnt say my dreams because I wasnt dreaming about him; I loved Mark, Mark was great I was getting married to him, he was my best friend. And all of a sudden this man walks in and there was an energy that I couldn't even explain in my wildest dreams that took me away."

See what else Karan had to say about the experience in the HuffPost Live clip below:

Karan went on to marry Mark, and together they had a daughter. But she continued her relationship with Weiss while married, and she and Mark divorced in 1978.

"Mark was fantastic, he was a great husband and a great father to Gaby, but what Stephan and I had going was something I can't imagine that I'd ever have again in my entire life," Karan said.

She and Weiss, an artist and the co-founder of the Donna Karan company, tied the knot in 1983. Weiss died in 2001 at the age of 62.

Jada Pinkett Smith ensured all eyes were on her at the Latin Grammys on Thursday night. The 44-year-old actress/singer accompanied her husband, Will Smith, who performed at the awards show.

For the Grammys, Jada wore a gorgeous, lace white dress with incredible detailing and a sheer bodice. She wore her hair up, with long earrings, a white clutch and a bright, pink lip.

We can only imagine the sticky tape that went in to keeping this dress in place.

Jada also posed on the red carpet with Will before taking pictures inside the venue. Will's performance of "Fiesta" with Bomba Estéreo brought down the house

4 Things You Didn't Know About Goldie Hawn On Her 70th Birthday

$

0

Goldie Hawn turns 70 today and she couldn't look better! The iconic blonde bombshell, known for her bubbly personality and big blue eyes, has entertained us with her vivacious persona for decades -- whether it was making us laugh until we cried on "Laugh In" or empowering us in "The First Wives Club."

At 70, there's more to Goldie than just her contagious laughter and that voluminous hair. Here are a few things you may not have known about Goldie.

1. She's a grandma.

Though she could easily pass for an older sister to her equally-beautiful daughter, Kate Hudson, Hawn is actually a grandmother of five. Kate Hudson has two sons and Hawn's son, Oliver Hudson, has two boys and a girl. But don't call her Grandma Goldie. Hawn wrote in her memoir, "A Lotus Grows In The Mud," about the day she became a grandmother. “I could barely contain myself. But was I really a ‘grandmother?’... a word that had so many connotations of old age and decrepitude.” They decided she would be called "Glam-ma."

2. She loves kids.

Goldie loves kids so much that she created a foundation in support of education in 2003. The Hawn Foundation works to help kids focus better in school, with activities designed to help them stress less and be more engaged in the classroom. She told NBC News that children are our most precious resource. "They are only 25 percent of our population today but they are 100 percent of our future," she said. "We can't turn a blind eye to the importance of the wellbeing of our children, and we need to pay close attention to building the future leaders of tomorrow."

3. She's mindful.

She's known for her optimism and upbeat attitude, and now we may know the secret behind it. Hawn says she's been meditating since 1972 and thinks it's important for all of us to unplug in today's technology-obsessed world. "We go into restaurants, and people aren't talking anymore. They're texting. While they are sitting at a restaurant with each other. So we're losing this intimacy that we need to have as human beings," Hawn said in an interview with ELLE Magazine.

Hawn recommends journaling and meditating just 10 minutes, twice a day, to relieve stress and to be happier. We'll have to try that.

4. She has great advice for making a relationship last.

Hawn and beau Kurt Russell, 64, are among Hollywood's longest-lasting couples, having been together for over 30 years, without tying the knot. Hawn's advice for anyone wanting to make their relationship last a lifetime is perfectly simple and incredibly wise. "Intention is the key," she said in an interview earlier this year.

"It's also about not losing yourself in each other. Being together, two pillars holding up the house and the roof, and being different, not having to agree on everything," she said.

Here's wishing Goldie many happy returns of the day and wishing her and Kurt many more happy years together.

Happy birthday, Goldie!

The Truth About Dark Circles And How To Deal With Them

$
0
0

Dark circles are easily one of the most annoying skin issues on the planet. They're nearly impossible to cover up, incredibly difficult to prevent and can make you look like you haven't slept in days. Most of us simply surrender to the fact that they exist. Going deeper into the problem seems like a lot of work.

To help solve the mystery of under eye circles, we turned to the pros for help. We spoke with both an aesthetician and a makeup artist to get the 411 on dark circle treatment, prevention and, of course, cover up. For the short version, check out the infographic below for key tips and tricks. For the in-depth scoop, continue on to read more about our chat with the experts.

According to Vanessa Hernandez, skincare specialist and celebrity aesthetician for L’Oréal Paris, the secret is knowing your skin. Hernandez explained that while dark circles are definitely influenced by lifestyle -- mainly our hydration levels and how much sleep we get each night -- often times they're out of our control. "Lots of times it's hereditary," she notes, meaning some people were born with thinner skin around the eye area than others. This makes the area look darker and more purple because the blood vessels shine through the fine barrier.

But just because our genes play a big role doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to properly maintain the skin around our eyes. No matter your skin type, Hernandez emphasizes the importance of good skincare: "It's never too soon to start using an eye cream, morning and night."

She recommends products with good hydrating and plumping ingredients like vitamin E (for nourishment), hyaluronic acid (for moisture retention) and/or natural oils like rosehip seed oil (for their healing properties, like scar and wrinkle reduction). One of her favorites is L'Oreal Age Perfect Eye Renewal Eye Cream. We're also fans of Kate Somerville Age Arrest Eye Cream and Erno Laszlo's Antioxidant Complex for Eyes

Hernandez also advocates for products that have caffeine in their formulation. "It hyper-activates [our skin] to produce more collagen and help elasticity." It's also a tightening agent that works on and beneath the surface of the skin by constricting the blood vessels around the eye area, making them less visible.

Perhaps the most surprising tip Hernandez shared with us is her opinion on wearing sunglasses. Skipping out on shades leaves the skin around our eyes more vulnerable to UVA and UVB rays that cause dark spots and wrinkles. Hernandez says we should all invest in a good pair of sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection and polarized lenses. We'll take this as an excuse to go shopping ASAP.

Knowing the anatomy of a dark circle is great, but most of us are really curious about how to make them look invisible. We've got you covered there too (no pun intended). In our quest to completely understand the dark circle, we also chatted with celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles

Stiles shared with us two amazing tricks. The first deals with the method of application. She finds it easier to use a brush when applying concealer: "I find I get more control and can vary the coverage more precisely when I use a brush. I always apply concealer after foundation and then very lightly powder afterward." This routine will help keep the area nice and covered throughout the day.

Stiles likes to use a liquid luminizer under the eye area as well. This helps reflect light and promote a more bright and youthful appearance. We love the A.C.E. Illuminating Eye Treatment by Onomie for its subtle iridescence and boost of vitamin C.

If you prefer concealer, though, Stiles emphasized the importance of picking the right shade: "For paler skin tones I look for peachy colors. The peach color cancels out the blue, neutralizing the area. For darker skin tones I look for concealers that will lighten and brighten, with a more golden/orange undertone."

If you're in the market for a new concealer, check out some of the gems we are obsessing over here at HuffPost Style:

The American Music Awards celebrate achievements in the music industry, but all achievements of trickery on the red carpet belong to supermodel Gigi Hadid.

Clad in a stunning (albeit revealing) crop top / high-slit skirt custom Bao Tranchi look that she accessorized with an elaborate ear cuff, Hadid, who is presenting at the event, debuted a super-short, sleek bob that is a major departure from her typically flowing, blonde locks

Her appearance at the show comes right off the heels of the Victoria's Secret Fashion show, which she walked in for the first time this year

Hadid told Giulianna Rancic we would have to "check back tomorrow" to see if she still had short hair, leading us to believe the bob is just a trick of the trade, but permanent or not, we are totally obsessed with the edgy look.

"This was the second dress I tried -- and the last dress I tried," Ciara told Giuliana Rancic on the E! live red carpet show.

For her beauty, the "Body Party" singer kept it simple with a soft berry lip and a messy bun at the nape of her neck.

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, aka two of Hollywood's most attractive people, are officially married

The actors tied the knot in a ceremony on Sunday at the Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Florida after a weekend full of wedding festivities

The "Modern Family" actress shared plenty of photos on Instagram from the special day, giving us a great look at her custom Zuhair Murad couture gown. The strapless dress featured a sweetheart neckline and an array of embellishments. According to People, the dress was covered in more than 11 pounds of sequins and six pounds of pearls, and took a total of 1,657 hours to make.

The bride and groom were absolutely glowing with happiness.

The actress also shared some photos of the lavish decor, which featured hundreds of hanging white and pink flowers, and rows of candles along the aisle. The venue, which was decorated by floral designer Jeff Leatham, looked like a beautiful enchanted forest.

The couple celebrated their big day with about 400 guests, including celebrity friends Reese Witherspoon, Channing Tatum and Arnold Schwarzenegger, E! News reports. Vergara's "Modern Family" co-stars, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ed O'Neill, Sarah Hyland, Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen, were also present.

5 Simple Steps To Keep Your Skin Healthy All Winter Long

Between your family and friends, you've probably had a lot of people giving you tips on how to take care of your skin during winter. Whether you decide to heed their particular advice or not, you must adjust your regimen during the cold-weather months.

"Whatever you were using in the summertime is probably not the right thing for you to use in the wintertime," says Ellen Marmur, a consulting dermatologist for Dove. "After the age of 15, our lipids (the layers of skin that holds moisture) are a bit lower as we get older no matter what skin type you have."

Downing bottles of water can only do so much, according to Marmur. "It's all about balance," she says. "Thinking about how your environment is making your skin feel, adjusting your routine and replenishing that protective barrier of moisture is the way to go."

Below are five steps this expert believes you can take right now to stave off winter skin dryness.

Gigi Hadid Slips Into Something Sexy For An AMAs After-Party

The bob may be fake, but the fierceness is so real.

Gigi Hadid slipped out of the head-turning, all-white ensemble she wore to the 2015 American Music Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night and into yet another revealing, sexy look -- we'd say that's quickly becoming her signature style -- at Justin Bieber's after-party.

Clad in head-to-toe black, the supermodel wowed in a cropped strapless top and pencil skirt, finishing the look off with a neck tie and strappy stiletto pumps.

She also kept the glorious faux bob that tricked fans lining the red carpet at the evening's festivities. Hadid was on hand at the AMAs to present an award with Kylie Jenner, but let's be real: She was mostly there to induce major style envy.

Justin Bieber Wore A Nirvana Shirt And People Got Really Pissed Off

Justin Bieber, who's been re-converting non-beliebers worldwide thanks to his new number one album "Purpose," won "Collaboration of the Year" and closed the night with a bang at the 2015 American Music Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night.

But not everyone is too happy with Biebs, who opted to wear ripped jeans, sneakers and a Nirvana t-shirt to the big event.

Some fans of the iconic grunge band recoiled in horror on social media. WWE's Paul Heyman called the pop singer's sartorial choice "sacrilegious," while others questioned his knowledge of the band's music (Bieber was born in 1994, just one month before the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain).

Bieber is hardly the first celeb to show unexpected support for surprising bands...

... and one person who was not so offended by the outfit was Cobain's widow Courtney Love, who called Bieber "cool."

But since we haven't browsed through Bieber's iPod recently, we  have no idea whether he's really a Nirvana fan or not. To be honest, we're more upset over him wearing a t-shirt to a major awards ceremony.

C'est la Biebs, we suppose.

The American Music Awards isn't one of those affairs where you know every guy on the red carpet is going to be decked out in a tux. In years past, the event has seen guys wear everything from severely cropped dinner jackets with printed pants to studded jackets with skulls printed on the lapels.

So it was actually a little bit of a relief to see a few guys at the 2015 AMAs, which took place in Los Angeles on Sunday night, wearing not-so-standard suits. Rest assured, plenty of young famous dudes cocked it up in some truly ridiculous clothing. Here's to the ones who got it right.

While Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan looked appropriately natty and British in their sharply tailored suits, Harry Styles put on a very '70s floral printed option that lots of rude people on Twitter compared to a matronly davenport. In reality it's from Gucci's spring 2016 collection, and fits perfectly with the classic English rock star aesthetic Styles has been cultivating over the past year.

Not to get too heavy handed about it, but this velvet jacket is exactly the kind of thing every truly stylish guy wants on hand for holiday parties.

Nick Jonas
The youngest Jonas brother did right by one of our favorite fall 2015 trends, wearing a turtleneck, even if doing so inspired some completely fair but not-too-kind "Hotline Bling" jokes.

This, gentlemen, is exactly how you want a suit to fit right now: Jacket slim but not nipped in, pants trim enough to wear without a belt. It doesn't hurt that the shade of blue is more royal than navy, which helps him stand out against the red carpet.

When you're wearing all black, details matter. Bridges, who has impeccable taste for a man of just 26 years, gets that, which is why his throwback tie is almost the exact same width as his blade-thin lapels.
