New York Fashion Week is officially underway, which means the biggest and most brilliant names in fashion have all flocked to the city to showcase their new collections.

Mika Brzezinski of "Morning Joe" visited her first Fashion Week show this week with Cosmopolitan magazine's Editor-In-Chief Joanna Coles and got a crash course in the style business.

"We had what 55 million tourists last year, all of them are shopping. It's a huge business, but it's a really fun business. It's social, it's creative. You've got crazy people at the center of it," Coles told Brzezinski at her Cosmo offices.

"This is part of New York's fingerprint: Fashion Week," said Brzezinski.

Coles also discussed what Cosmopolitan looks for in a model, the challenging modern dating game and how Cosmo’s message hasn't changed over the years.

“We are very focused on the DNA of the magazine, which was what Helen Gurly Brown the great editor of the 21st century was really brilliant at creating, which is about confidence and women having a voice,” explained Coles.

Stars Sport Stunning Side-Swept Waves On This Week's Best & Worst Beauty List (PHOTOS)

$

Our go-to sporting event beauty look usually consists of a middle ponytail, tinted moisturizer and lip balm. But when you're a celebrity, of course, you have to glam it up. And at this year's Super Bowl parties, stars sported stunning side-swept waves.

Brooklyn Decker was absolutely beaming with her blonde, side-swept waves and radiant makeup, and Heidy de la Rosa's take on the trend with her thick hair was flawless. Meanwhile, Miranda Kerr popped up on fashion red carpet sporting her signature side-swept hairdo with bold coral lips.

Get swept away by these wavy hairstyles (and see more standout hair and makeup looks below).

BEST: Brooklyn Decker

brooklyn decker

We just can't take our eyes off of Brooklyn's side-swept waves, bronze eyeshadow, glowy skin and that gorgeous olive green blouse.

BEST: Miranda Kerr

miranda kerr

Kerr looks picture-perfect with her brunette ringlets, long lashes and that glossy coral lip color.

BEST: Heidy de la Rosa

heidy de la rose

This young model proves that girls with thicker hair CAN rock side-swept waves, too. Her bold brows, iridescent eyeshadow and rosy cheeks round out this look.

BEST: Coco Rocha

coco rocha

If you're going to wear a lot of makeup, then it should look just as good as Coco Rocha's. The Candadian-born beauty is right on trend with her wet hairstyle, dramatic cat-eye and berry red lipstick.

BEST: Shay Mitchell

shay mitchell

The "Pretty Little Liars" star looks more vamp then pretty with her sexy, tousled hair, smokey eyeshadow and dark lips.

WORST: Amber Tamblyn

amber tamblyn

We didn't recognize the actress with this Peggy Bundy-meets-Paula Deen hairstyle. The big hair ages Tamblyn quite a bit.

WORST: Ashanti

ashanti

The R&B singer looks like she's channeling Mary J. Blige from her "What's the 411?" days with her unflattering blonde wig, bronze makeup and dramatically outlined lips.

WORST: Keri Russell

keri russell

Keri is such a naturally beautiful woman, so we just hate to see her in cat-eye makeup that draws unwanted attention to her crow's feet.

WORST: Lindsay Vonn

lindsay vonn

Between Vonn's blunt haircut, hard-rimmed eyes and bare lips, the athlete looks like she didn't put much effort into her look.

WORST: Ireland Baldwin

ireland baldwin

Dear Ireland, the '90s called and they want this awful hair and makeup back.

Fashion Week Look Of The Day: Derek Lam Does Winter White Right

All-American elegance is one way you could describe Derek Lam's Fall 2014 collection. This season, the talented designer showed modern pieces that could easily stay in your wardrobe for decades. Though many of the items relied on more classic silhouettes, it was the luxe materials that made them something to remember. Models came down the runway in cashmere T-shirts, twill jackets and suede culottes.

The strongest look of the day was a monochromatic ensemble that featured a bouclé crewneck coat and felt mesh dress with a crepe faille skirt. The different textures played off one another, creating visual interest, while the snake print boots were an added bonus.

The hair and makeup grounded the outfit, as the dark eyeshadow and sleek, center part were the perfect nod to fall. Oh, and if it wasn't already clear, low ponytails are all you're going to be seeing come September.

A New Treats Trend at NYFW

The Seventeen Fashion team is on day number four, and as we've been running from show to show we've been lucky enough to get some goodies and snacks in between. I've noticed this season not only are designers feeding our notebooks and social newsfeeds with new creations, but some are even keeping our belly's fully too!

I've been so pleasantly surprised by this trend of treats we've been greeted with at presentations. Sweet Krispie Cupcake confections at Wildfox, a huge spread of savory bite sized mini tarts and pies at the Target presentation, super food juices at Dannijo, and even a Hot Chocolate bar in our own Hearst café! Lincoln Center also got in on the trend... a small café is tucked away in between tents for editors to grab a bite and take a break while posting their favorite runway looks and checking other #nyfw newsfeeds.

Lots of snacks and a fashion week survival kit full of water, mints, and energy bars have been absolutely necessary in past seasons to help our fashion team get through the week. Instead, now we only need to stuff our tiny cross body bags with extra gloves and phone chargers thanks to these new yummy additions to fashion week!

Victoria Beckham's New York Fashion Week Show Is A Family Affair

$

NEW YORK (AP) — Those who come to fashion shows purely for the celebrity factor would not have been disappointed Sunday morning at Victoria Beckham's runway show, where they got to see soccer great David Beckham, accompanied by their four impeccably groomed children, snap selfies of himself and his toddler daughter while waiting for Mom's big moment.

On the runway, Victoria Beckham presented a fall collection based on the idea, in her words, that "Everything is not what it seems." "It's all 360 degrees — nothing is flat," she said in a post-show interview backstage. "You look at a structured coat from the front, and then from the back you see this beautiful pleat. Or you're looking at a dress, and then the whole back is missing."

The collection was almost entirely black and white, with an emphasis on ruffles and pleats, and a fondness for a single gold chain draped across a garment.

Beckham said she was trying to incorporate changes in her clothes, but not so much as to alienate her regular customer. "It's about satisfying my sense of creativity, but also giving our customer what she wants," she said.

After the show, Beckham spoke about building a stronger presence in New York. But she made clear that the couple won't be moving to Miami — even though David Beckham just confirmed a few days ago that he plans to become owner of a Major League Soccer expansion franchise there.

"Just because David has a club in Miami doesn't mean we are moving to Miami," she said. "We're based in London and that's where the kids go to school. "

Seated next to the Beckham family were Vogue editor Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee Shaffer.

5 Perfect Quotes From HBO's 'Girls' Season 3, Episode 6

$

Here at HuffPost Women, one of the things we love most about Lena Dunham's HBO show, "Girls," is the incisive, witty and hilarious dialogue that Dunham and the rest of her writing team come up with every week. So instead of simply recapping Season 3, we decided to pick five quotable gems from each episode.

Episode 6: "Free Snacks"

This week we see Hannah putting her big-girl pants on, quitting her job at Ray's and entering corporate America as a sponsored content write for GQ. Although she's initially seduced by the free snack room and praise from her cool-as-a-cucumber boss (played by the ever-stylish Jenna Lyons), she quickly becomes terrified that a 9-5 job that isn't quite "spiritually fulfilling" will destroy her ability to be a "real writer." Meanwhile, Jessa is forcefully selling black christening dresses to rich Brooklyn moms, Shosh has decided to "unchoose" her reckless lifestyle and find a for-real, serious boyfriend, and Ray and Marnie are taking the first, tentative steps toward a beyond-sex romantic connection. Of course, they also end up in a restaurant during lunchtime yelling at each other about Africa and western aid over dumplings. But, as we all know, the course of true love temporary companionship never did run smooth.

1. Hannah accepting praise: "Yeah, I feel like that wasn't as re-tweeted as it should have been, so I appreciate the support."

2. Shosh on Ray's basketball skills: "Ray really seems to have the respect of his peers on the court." Jessa: "That's amazing. It's really hard for a Jew to gain respect in sports."

3. Hannah suggesting types of men at her new GQ job: "The Kaballer. He's a little sleazy. He's like, out looking for sex. But he's wearing Kaballah bracelets so you know he's spiritual. He'd like fuck some serious enlightenment into you."

4. Jenna Lyons, as Hannah's boss, on her ideas: "Neiman Marcus doesn't sell a widow's peak, but worth considering."

5. A fashion truth from Joe, Hannah's coworker: "Fedoras are worse than genocide."

Honorable Mention...
Adam on why he goes to acting auditions: "I just like reading emotional cues from strangers in a high-pressure situation."

Plus-Size Model Georgina Burke Named The First Face Of Torrid

It's another wonderful day in the world of plus-size modeling.

Women's Wear Daily reported Monday that plus-size retailer Torrid has named Australian model Georgina Burke as the first-ever face of their brand, featuring her on the cover of their swimsuit catalogue as well as on their website and in stores.

The partnership will be the first major plus-size ad campaign the world has seen in a long time, and it's easy to see why the Torrid chose 23-year-old Burke to represent their brand. She is gorgeous, fresh, and most of all, real. Her message is clear -- there is no reason why she shouldn't be featured in a major fashion campaign. Burke explains:

"Sixty-eight percent of women in America are over size 12. Why can't we be put in the magazine as well? Who's to say we aren’t good enough to be in there? What's wrong with putting me as the face of a company or using us [plus-size women] in a magazine or putting us out there in a fashionable way?"

Strides have certainly been made toward making the fashion industry a more inclusive place. Just last month, IMG signed on five new plus-size models, and let's not forget about that gorgeous Robin Lawley Cosmo cover last month.

Here's hoping more retailers take note from this campaign and we continue to see more diverse models. Check out the images below and head over to Torrid to shop the collection.

Los Angeles Times Building Inspired New York Fashion Week Collection

$

Designer Scott Sternberg showed the Band of Outsiders menswear line at New York Fashion Week over the weekend, and he said it was inspired by a photo shoot he did at the Los Angeles Times building.

"[We were going] around this enormous structure -- most of which is empty -- and we just fell in love with being in those rooms, and all the stories behind them," he told the Times. "And it was a little sad how empty the building was. ... And I'd wanted to do something very graphic-driven for a collection -- playing with prints and jacquards -- and this idea of the 'death of the newspaper' came to mind as a theme, with this sort of newsboy silhouette and it went from there."

Click over to the LA Times for their full report.

The collection was big on gray, black and white, as well as graphic patterns like polka dots and window pane prints. There were also newsboy caps!

Julia Roberts' half-sister, Nancy Motes, has died of an apparent drug overdose, reports People magazine.

Motes' family confirmed she was found dead in Los Angeles on Sunday (Feb. 9), though the exact circumstances of her death have yet to be released.

"It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes ... confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose," read a statement from the family. "There is no official report from the Coroner's office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated."

Motes, 37, was the youngest sibling of Julia and Eric Roberts, and Lisa Roberts Gillan.

Nicki Minaj Poses In Netted Dress That Leaves Almost Nothing To The Imagination

Nicki Minaj is known for her love of over-the-top outfits and the "Super Bass" singer continued to turn up the heat in her latest set of Instagram photos.

The 31-year-old singer embraced her natural hair for a photo shoot with Grizzleemusic, in which she donned a netted dress by Mark Fast that is sure to raise a few eyebrows. Wearing just pasties over her nipples, the largely see-through dress leaves very little to the imagination.

Of course, it's no surprise to see Minaj wearing pasties and forgoing a bra, as she told Ellen DeGeneres this past September, "I don't like bras. Bras are like the devil."

Flat Shoes With Crew Socks Is The Latest Trend Out Of Fashion Week

Last go round at New York Fashion Week, it was established that heels are out and flats are in. This season, that trend seems to be holding on strong (Hallelujah!). But the fashion world is never stagnant, and what was last year's shower shoe has evolved. Now it's all about flat shoes with crew socks.

Just when we thought our footwear options couldn't get any more comfortable, a number of designers have been showing brogues, loafers and sneakers with cozy socks. Come fall, not only will we be able to run around in our flats, but our toes will be extra warm, too.

Will you try this trend? Or do you prefer your socks to stay hidden?

Did Harper's Bazaar Go Too Far With Fashion Week Emojis? (PHOTOS, POLL)

Emojis have become an integral part of the way we communicate via text message and social media. So it was only a matter of time before the fashion industry tried out this playful trend. Harper's Bazaar decided to hop on the bandwagon just in time for New York Fashion Week this year.

The magazine debuted its very own set of emojis Sunday, available for download and inclusive of Fashion Week essentials like green juice, Karl Lagerfield and a SoulCycle bike, to name a few. But the mag may have taken things a bit too far with their "Chill Pill" emoji, which from the looks of it, is actually two pills of Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication.

We're all about keeping our zen during the chaos of Fashion Week, and even more into fashion-theme emojis, but showcasing the pill in this way makes the mag seem a bit insensitive to those people who are actually effected by anxiety.

What do you think? To see all the "stylish" emojis, head over to Harper's Bazaar.

Supermodel Stephanie Seymour Does Sexy Photo Shoot...With Her Sons (PHOTO)

First she stunned in Jason Wu ads, then she signed as the face for Estée Lauder's fall campaign, and now supermodel Stephanie Seymour continues a fabulous run in a Harper's Bazaar feature with her two sons, Peter, 20, and Harry, 17. During the interview, Seymour and the boys talk about their distinct upbringing, entrenched in the fashion world (I mean, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell are their godmothers...).

In particular, Seymour remembers the way the boys used to dress her up. "When they were little, they would lay out outfits for me," later adding "I'd wake up at 7:30 a.m. and they would have laid out a 1955 vintage Dior couture gown and all the accessories too," she said. Don't we all wish our sons could pull a vintage Dior out of the closet for us.

But could this anecdote be the explanation behind the photo shoot? In the spread, Peter and Harry are shown fixing up their mom in thigh-high lace-up boots, embracing her while she's scantily clad in a little black dress.

hbz seymour 2

Back in 2011, Seymour and then 17-year-old Peter made similar headlines when they were spotted kissing in St. Barths, but the two stood by the photos.

Although the Harper's Bazaar photos caught some off guard, the three of them cranked out some fantastic poses and, let's be real, they all have that supermodel gene going on.

This mom has got some serious style:

Kanye West's Nike Red October Sneakers Are Going For More Than $16 MILLION On Ebay

$

When Nike unexpectedly dropped Kanye West's new Air Yeezy 2 sneakers on the world Sunday night, it didn't take long for the now sold-out shoes to appear on eBay and other sites for positively bonkers amounts of cash.

The most eye-popping asking price thus far is the £10,000 (about $16.4 million) UK-based eBay auction -- a figure that's slightly higher than the entire 2013 GDP of the country of Georgia.

A more "reasonable" stateside auction showed the shoes commanding $15,000 -- and dozens of eager bidders.

The shoes reportedly sold out just 10 minutes after becoming available.

Pitchfork offered an explanation as to why the shoes are fetching such outlandish prices noting that the Air Yeezy 2 is possibly the rapper's last collaboration with Nike after he cut ties with the brand during a Hot 97 radio interview in 2013.

Yeezy hasn't addressed the frenzy his new sneakers has triggered, instead spending Monday to reflect on the 10-year anniversary of his insta-classic LP, "The College Dropout." In a series of tweets:

'Project Runway' Winner, Dom Streater, Debuts First-Ever Collection At New York Fashion Week

$
0
0
Dom Streater may have just presented her first collection at New York Fashion Week, but the Philadelphia native is definitely used to having her designs sized up by the fashion elite.

She's the reigning winner of "Project Runway" and has proven herself worthy of the spotlight. But now the 25-year-old designer, who is the show's first-ever African-American winner, is looking to secure her place amongst the biggest designers in the industry -- and if her Fall/Winter 2014 collection is any indication of that campaign then she's on the right track.

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS

This past Thursday, Streater presented her 27-piece collection called "Prima" in a light filled studio in downtown New York City to a host of editors, bloggers and fashion insiders. Boasting abstract floral prints in berry and dusty rose hues as well as high contrast black-and-white patterns, the collection was inspired by a photograph of the Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova.

"It's this really ethereal, wild child photo -- but also really romantic," the Moore College of Art & Design graduate told The Huffington Post. After researching the dancer further, Streater learned that Pavlova had a rebellious side and set out to translate that same fearless and self-assured spirit into each piece.

The entire collection is ultra feminine and definitely plays up Streater's penchant for 50s and 60s silhouettes. But that ladylike sensibility feels modern and fresh thanks to the bold prints. We could definitely see Michelle Obama donning one of her frocks, a sight that Dom herself also hopes to see in the future.

That future looks bright for Streater and she doesn't feel any pressure forging a successful career in an industry that has very few designers of color and has struggled with issues of diversity.

"I don't think the expectations for me should be any different from any other designers who have won. The only expectations I have is that my designs are good every season and that's the only thing I want to deliver," Streater told HuffPost. "In the past five years I've seen more growth in diversity within the industry then I have ever seen. So I think it's definitely something we're moving towards."

Check out photos from Dom Streater's Fall/Winter 2014 presentation below. Do you love it?
