How To Be The Best Dressed Man At Any Holiday Party

$
0
0

Now that we're in the thick of the holiday season, you're bound to be invited to a holiday party of some sort: the professional office party, the casual family get-together, the social "holidate."

How's a guy supposed to dress for such occasions? (Hint: Steer clear of bright red and green.)

We asked Veeral Rathod, a former Wall Street man who left the stock trade to start and preside over J.Hilburn, a menswear company that focuses on tailor-made pieces. Not only does he attend basically every type of holiday party every year, but he's got dressing for them down to a science.

His best advice, he told The Huffington Post, is to "treat holiday events as different occasions than you’re used to. It’s not dressing for work, a wedding or the average night out. It’s the holidays. It’s winter. It’s festive. You really should think about what you can do differently but still express your style and have the right appearance when you show up.”

Here's how he recommends dressing yourself for those three basic holiday parties.

It Only Takes Three Pieces

But they have to work together. "There are three basic things for any guy, Rathod said. "What shirt? What bottoms? And what piece to layer over the shirt, whether it's a sweater, sports coat or something else -- it depends on the type of event."

Dress Prepared To Make The Change

"The biggest wrench for guys is that they're often transitioning from work to a holiday event," Rathod said. "No guy wants to change completely for the event, so the big question is, how can I use some of the pieces to transition into the evening?"

He recommends having two out of the three holiday party components be what you wear to work, then just swap out one piece for the fancier one when you join the festivities.

The Professional Holiday Party

When it comes to the holiday party at work (whether it's at your office or your law firm's office), a classic midnight blue suit will do the trick. Paired with a classic white shirt, it's great for the office, but before the party, swap the shirt for a darker color, another shade of blue, perhaps, or a dark turtleneck. You can also play with the pocket square or switch out with a different tie.

"I’m not a huge fan of a lot of bright red and green, bringing in the Christmas colors," Rathod said, "but I might drop in a burgundy pocket square, something that invokes holiday colors.

Just don't forget the jacket: "A well-structured jacket is a must-have for any type of holiday event."

The Social Holiday Party:

Somebody invited you to a fancy holiday party at their house, so you're going to want to keep it a little more relaxed than you would for a professional party, but not much. "It’s a hard one," Rathod said, about knowing where to draw the line. "What I like to do is start with a great pair of jeans, raw denim, really dark-rinsed denim, not washed. It looks a little dressier. And go for a clean shirt, usually white, black, navy or a really deep burgundy."

To top if off? Don't be afraid to throw on a tux jacket. "Oftentimes, if you have a black tuxedo jacket, that alone raises the bar," Rathod said. "It looks really fashionable, and rarely will you find another guy wearing it."

The Casual Holiday Party:

Your family get-together, or a party at the in-laws' -- this is where you can afford to loosen up a bit, but still look like you cared. Rathod recommends wearing jeans or chinos and a casual shirt or sweater, rather than a sports coat.

"[If it's] during the day, a brunch, it's more family oriented," he said. "I don't want to feel too formal. I want to feel dressed for the occasion."

As Always, Take Time To Get It Tailored

"What great tailoring does is give projects attention to detail, and when you’re wearing it you feel more confident. As you think about going to a holiday event, I’m going to be around a lot of my professional friends. I still want to portray that confidence when I walk in. That suit works well, but you'll know how to take it up notch for this holiday party," Rathod said.

Hi, Sia. You're interesting.

You want to be famous but you also don't want to be famous. You look great, but you don't want people to see you. You've found an interesting way to hide yourself from the insatiable public by wearing a blonde bob wig in your face that protects Sia The Human from being recognized on the street when you're not busy being Sia The Award-Winning Performing Artist and Songwriter For Rihanna, Katy Perry, Beyonce And A Bunch Of Other People.

You still want to live a normal-ish life. We get it. But sometimes it's hard for us to know what you're thinking. So we made a handy Sia Wig Emotion Decoder to remind us which one goes with which wig face. Sia, if somehow you're able to read this through your wig, we hope it brings you a happy face (also, be sure to let us know if we're wrong about any of these). We love you.

This year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show marks the first time Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid will strut down the lingerie brand's legendary catwalk, and according to veteran VS supermodels Lily Aldridge and Elsa Hosk, fans are in for a treat.

"They were amazing," Aldridge told HuffPost Live in a conversation on Thursday. "They're such a great group of friends. We're such a supportive group of women, and they killed it."

Hosk recounted that the newbies' positive energy was an asset to all the models who walked in the show, which was previously recorded and airs Dec. 8 on CBS.

"It's just cute to see people walking for the first time because they're so excited and so happy, and it's infectious," Hosk said. "They get out on the runway and they're smiling and embracing everything, and it affects me a lot."

Look Who's Wearing A Bikini In Target's Latest Ad

Target Australia is getting praise from women of all ages, shapes and sizes for its latest bikini ad. The retailer shared this photo from its Christmas catalog on Facebook this week and has been applauded for featuring not only women of all body types, but for featuring a much older woman with gray hair.

Yay for looking good and feeling great this summer! We have a huge range of swimwear styles for all body shapes. http://bit.ly/1StrNmb

Posted by Target Australia on Wednesday, December 2, 2015

The photo appears to have very little editing, with the women proudly flaunting their curves. Earlier this year, Target launched its "Every Body" campaign, promising to feature more realistic, diverse models.

It's not every day you see a mature woman sporting a two-piece and people have taken notice. The photo has drawn hundreds of comments for its positive message.

"Seeing a bikini on an older model makes me more inclined to go into the store, try it on and maybe even buy it instead of my usual one piece," wrote one commenter. "Well done, Target! It is so important on a social level to get the 'real bodies are beautiful' and the 'beauty has no age or race' messages out there," wrote another. All the comments had one underlying message -- it's about time.

The silver model, Mel Brady, is in her 50s, and has done a number of other shoots with Target, sharing more photos on her Instagram page. "Very proud of how well I've done to represent my baby boomer demographic in a youthful way," Brady wrote in one caption.

A photo posted by Mel Brady (@missbrady) on

Other fashion brands have also started appealing to the older demographic by featuring older models. Earlier this year, a 62-year-old woman became the face of a lingerie line and  several post-50 stars including Helen Mirren and Julianne Moore have also signed on to be spokeswomen for various beauty lines.

You go girls!

Nail Winter's Best His-And-Her Styles With These 8 Looks From Your Favorite Holiday Movies

It is a truth universally acknowledged that once the air turns crisp and the trees shed their leaves, it’s time to rewatch your favorite holiday flicks (even if you’ve seen them a dozen two dozen times before). You also can’t help but notice your favorite characters’ once-fashionable looks fading out of favor with each passing year.

Needless to say, some of the best looks from our favorite season-celebrating films could use a little refreshing. That’s why we’ve partnered with eBay to create these eight amazing, updated looks inspired by the characters we love to watch (and rewatch) this time of year.

1. Clark Griswold from ‘Christmas Vacation’

Image: Polyvore

Have yourself the hap-hap-happiest holiday party around while donning this nuanced Clark Griswold look. Layer a classic-button down with your favorite holiday tie (or if you’re feeling extra fancy, a bowtie!) and cozy knit cardigan, then top the look off with a moose mug of old-fashioned eggnog.

2. Amanda Woods from ‘The Holiday’

Image: Polyvore

Unlike Amanda Woods, this look might have you crying because of how amazingly cozy it is. Layer light-colored knits with dark jeans and heeled boots for a travel-ready look that won’t leave you feeling (or looking) jet lagged.

3. Mark Darcy from ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’

Image: Polyvore

Because who better than Mark Darcy to pull off a bold holiday sweater? Be sure to dress up the look with a white oxford, pressed slacks and a long fleece scarf.

4. Ralphie from ‘A Christmas Story’

Image: Polyvore

It might not be an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot range model air rifle, but this cozy wool sweater layered over a fleece flannel will just have to do for now. Cue your best “You’ll shoot your eye out!” impression.

5. Sally Albright from ‘When Harry Met Sally’

Image: Polyvore

Beyond her, er, persnicketymethod of ordering, Sally Albright was on to something with her oversized blazers, high-waisted jeans and leather accessories. Mix and match bold patterns with classic neutrals like browns, black and greys for a casual, light-weather look.

6. Bridget Jones from ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’

Image: Polyvore

We’ve revamped your favorite 30-something’s evening cocktail look -- Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” mantra and all. Top your look off with rosy cheeks and nude lips for a look that even Daniel Cleaver would appreciate.

7. George Bailey from ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’

Image: Polyvore

It’s not quite the moon, but we definitely want you to channel your inner George Bailey for your next holiday party. Pull off this dapper look with a clean-cut suit, warm, bulky scarf and a wool duster. Don’t forget to top the look off with a classic fedora!

8. Cindy Lou Who from ‘The Grinch’

Image: Polyvore

Honestly, who could feel like a Grinch wearing these bright colors and glittered lashes? Dress like your favorite holiday Who by pairing a black plaid dress with burgundy tights and a cheeky red overcoat. Toss on a layer of liquid eyeliner and cherry-red lipgloss and you’re ready to spread holiday cheer for all to hear!

Shop eBay for all of winter’s classic looks.

Sexist Ad Campaign Reminds Women They're Nothing More Than Objects

Warning: Some images may be considered NSFW to some readers

Advertising: Turning women into objects since the beginning of time.

On Dec. 1, a New Zealand men's clothing company called I Love Ugly launched an advertising campaign for its new jewelry collection. The ads show fully-clothed men modeling their bejeweled hands all over a naked woman's body.

The ads, which were originally posted by fashion and art website HighSnobiety, are not featured on I Love Ugly's website, but can be found on the company's Facebook page

The below image from the campaign, featured in I Love Ugly's Facebook page, shows a man' s hand resting on a woman's bare butt, though it's cropped so that you can't see the woman's underside.

Below is another image from I Love Ugly's campaign.

Added Warning: Beware sexist bullshit ahead.

Some people were understandably upset with I Love Ugly's ads and voiced their opinions about the campaign on Twitter.

Rae Duff, the president for the National Council of Women for New Zealand, told BuzzFeed that the council was "disappointed" by I Love Ugly's ad campaign. "The images use women’s bodies as mere props and promote unequal power dynamics," Duff said. "It reflects how too often women in our society are seen as merely sexual objects and this feeds into our culture of abuse and violence against women. As a brand that targets young men, they should be doing more to promote healthy attitudes.”

I Love Ugly, however, didn't seem too worried about the backlash. The fashion company tweeted the below response on Tuesday, which they have since deleted:

Hmm... really?

One Twitter user had the perfect response to I Love Ugly's tweet:

Sexist as hell is right. Do better next time -- much better.

Head over to HighSnobiety to see more images from I Love Ugly's campaign.

The Huffington Post reached out to I Love Ugly for comment, but did not hear back by the time of publication.

3 Easy Celebrity Looks To Copy For Every Type Of Holiday Party

$

Without a stiff drink in hand, holiday party season can be incredibly taxing. If you're even semi style-conscious, most of the stress stems from one simple question: "What am I going to wear?!"

The question becomes even more urgent -- and difficult to answer -- when you've got more than one type of holiday party to attend. What's appropriate for a night out with your friends most likely won't work for schmoozing with your boss at the company party. But, speaking honestly, who has the extra cash to blow on five new dresses?

To help you keep things simple and affordable, while still giving you options, check out our three go-to holiday looks below, courtesy of a few of our favorite chic celebs. Easy to accessorize and re-wear, each pick is sure to maximize your style come party time.

Structured, Sophisticated & Sure To Make A Statement

Good for: formal affairs, cocktail parties, fancy work functions

If you're going to be drinking with your boss, it's essential you look and feel your best. Opt for a dress that's appropriate and professional, like a frock with a structured silhouette that flatters your figure without being too tight. Choose a dress with a little color, like a soft green, to make the look festive.

Holiday Dressing - Kate Mara

Shop the look: 1. Topshop Tinsel Wrap A-Line Dress, $952. River Island Short Sleeve Sequin Dress, $1173. Reiss Carmen Dress, $340.

The Easygoing, Yet Elegant LBD

Good for: family soirées, laid back office parties, dinner with the in-laws

Semi-formal holiday parties are some of the toughest to dress for, because you can easily show up over- or under-dressed. Prevent a sartorial snafu and reach for your tried-and-true little black dress. Pair it with a nude lip, patterned shoe and evening crossbody like Kerry Washington, and you'll look like a million bucks.

Holiday Dressing - Kerry Washington

Shop the look: 1. H&M Halterneck Dress, $49.992. James Perse Stretch-Fleece Midi Dress, $2653. Faux Leather Shift Dress, $85.

For The Mellow Minimalist

Good for: hangouts with friends, Secret Santa exchanges, holiday potluck

Casual get togethers are holiday parties, too. Keep it cute and laid back with a turtleneck and pair of black trousers, like a leather pant or dark jean. This look will go with any accessories in your closet and can easily go from day-to-night if your midday brunch turns into midnight drinks.

Holiday Dressing - Elizabeth Olsen

Shop the look: 1. H&M Turtleneck Sweater, $49.99, Zara Faux Leather Leggings, $402. Zara Sweater With Slits, $50Manon Baptiste Zip Accent Faux Leather Leggings, $124.90; 3. Handknit Cozy Turtleneck Sweater, $134,  Alexa Chung For AG Jeans, $120

Earmuffs are hot.

Really hot.

Not only does the handy headwear prevent you from the despair of hat-hair all winter long, but ear muffs are pretty stylish in their own right. It’s no wonder that every year on the first Saturday in December, the town of Farmington, Maine celebrates Chester Greenwood, the local boy who invented earmuffs at the tender age of 15 in 1873.

This year, we wanted to hold our own parade… of sexy earmuff stock photos. We think Chester would approve.

Kanye West's Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 Is Officially The Best Shoe of 2015

It's been a big year for Kanye West. He announced his plans to run for president, his two year old daughter stood up to the paparazzi, his second child (a boy) is due to arrive any day, and, as of last night, his Yeezy Boost 350 was anointed Shoe of the Year at the Footwear News 29th Annual Achievement Awards ceremony. Dubbed the "Shoe Oscars", West accepted the honor in a very Kanye West speech. Some particularly memorable quotes:

"I have absolutely no plans for what I'm going to say, so this could land completely wrong, but it doesn't really fucking matter, does it? If you don't like 10-minute profanity-ridden speeches that end with a presidential bid, you can go to the bathroom."

"I want to fucking draw shoes, and it doesn't matter if someone thinks that I'm supposed to be doing something that's more important."

"As a creator, it doesn't matter how big your house is, how big your name is, how much money you have, your job is to create while you're here and if anyone is in the way of that, if anything gets in the way of that, you got to burn it to the fucking ground."

"I'm trying to take a full 'Will Ferrell drunk brother at the wedding' vibe. Have I reached that level yet? Here's to fucking everything up!" (footwearnews.com)

Congrats, Kanye. With all this good news, it's no wonder the rapper/producer/style god was breaking his own rule of not smiling in pictures yesterday. Check him out during a shopping trip in Soho, NYC.

Who says smiling isn't cool? Well, West, who has gone on the record saying he doesn't like to smile for cameras because it doesn't look cool. But seeing him happy makes us happy. Just like seeing how good he looks in drape-y tees and sweatpants makes us want to wear the same thing. It's just contagious.

"Bringing Home The Birkin" is Mark Tonello's humorous tale of being an international Hermes Birkin bag reseller. The fabled bag began when English actress and singer Jane Birkin on a 1981 flight to London from Paris broke her straw carryall spilling all its contents. Hermes executive Jean Louis Dumas helped Jane with her spillage and was inspired to create the namesake carryall. With a wait list as long as two years the iconic bag is the company's best seller. Enter Privé Porter, the private dealer of luxury handbags, with a specialty in sourcing authentic Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags since 2008. Privé Porter has Hermes collectors panting on Instagram and eBay.

Fun pop- up stores are a signature company move. A pop-up store on a Van Dutch 55 yacht during the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show featured $2 million in bags for sale. The next pop up store is planned for the Hamptons in Summer 2016. Director Jeffrey Berks disclosed in the works, "Full Time stores in February 2016 at arguably the most prestigious Beverly Hotel there and April 2016, in the famed Faena Miami Retail Bazaar". Watch this delightful exposé of Hayao Miyazaki's emotional animated films, which are at once sophisticated and relatable.  The "internal subtleties" of Miyazaki's characters and plot lines differ so much from most of the popular animation we see in the U.S. If you haven't seen films like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle, add a Miyazaki film to your list this weekend.

Everyone Is Wearing Face Sheet Masks, And So Should You

K-beauty, aka Korean beauty, has quickly expanded to the rest of the world over the past five years thanks to life-changing products. From BB creams (beauty balms that make you look like you're not wearing any makeup) to essences (highly concentrated, yet lightweight topical treatments that go on before serums and moisturizers), you can't walk into a Sephora or Ulta without seeing a display highlighting Korean skincare.

But one of the most popular K-beauty trends to have taken off this year has been face sheet masks. Supermodels Chrissy Teigen and Karolina Kurkova, comedian Chelsea Handler and actor James Franco have uploaded photos of themselves on social media sporting face sheet masks, which make them resemble Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th."

According to Christine Chang and Sarah Lee of Glow Recipe, an online destination for natural Korean beauty products, brands hailing from the East Asian nation have been the key driver in popularizing face sheet masks in the U.S. "Many of the sheet mask manufacturers that global brands are using are also based in Korea and we believe that it set a precedent for the quality of products available in the market," say Chang and Lee.

While the beauty pros note that it's been well over a decade since face sheet masks have become a staple for Korean women, it remains a vital part of their regimen. "[They] use sheet masks up to three to four times a week, depending on their skin condition," adds Chang and Lee.

But are they really worth the hype and adding to your skincare routine?

Heidi Waldorf, the director of laser and dermatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told HuffPost one of the biggest benefits of face sheet masks is that they deliver product deep into the skin in a concentrated way. "It is, at its most basic, applying product with occlusion (a cover) to increase penetration," she says. "However, not all masks are created equal."

Waldorf believes masks that contain hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid are fantastic for anyone with dry skin or to use for added moisture because of cold, winter weather. They are also perfect to pack inside your carry-on for a long flight to combat the dry air experienced at such a higher altitude, giving you a nourished glow. The derm also points out that when hyaluronic acid is combined with depuffing ingredients like caffeine in a concentrated manner, they can work to minimize swelling and irritation.

Before you go tossing out creams and serums from your medicine cabinet, Waldorf says the caveat to face sheet masks are that they do not take the place of a regular skincare regimen. "Think of them as adjuncts to moisturizing or applying anti-aging ingredients and sunscreens, not replacements," she explains. "They can help get you off a skin plateau or recuperate from a procedure. Just be sure to speak with your dermatologist if you have a skincare regimen about how best to incorporate."

Kim Kardashian Gives Birth To Baby Boy

Congratulations go out to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West!

The 35-year-old reality star gave birth to a baby boy on Saturday.  The news was confirmed via Kim's blog with a post that read, "Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West welcomed the arrival of their son this morning. Mother and son are doing well."

A tweet that said, "He's here!" was also sent from Kim's Twitter account

The little bundle of joy is the second child for Kardashian and West, who welcomed their daughter, North, in June 2013.

The couple was open about their desire to expand their family, with Kardashian revealing her exciting pregnancy news on an episode of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" in May. A month later, she announced she was expecting a baby boy by sharing an Instagram photo of her husband and daughter, which she captioned, "Precious moments like this when we were traveling on tour with you are what I live for. You're such a good daddy to North & you will be the best daddy to our new son too!"

Kardashian also made it no secret that she didn't exactly enjoy her second pregnancy, calling it "the worst experience of my life" in a post on her website.

Of course, the star didn't exactly have a smooth pregnancy the first time around either, having suffered from preeclampsia and placenta accreta, which contributed to her fertility issues. In late November, she wrote that she was having a lot of anxiety because her baby was in a breech position, and a week later underwent a procedure called an external cephalic version (ECV) to manually turn the baby so he's in a head-down position.

As for names, well, we haven't heard anything yet. As for sharing the first photo of their son, for reference, the couple waited a full two months to give the world its first look at North, in a very calculated reveal during the rapper's appearance on Kris Jenner's talk show.

Miranda Lambert Stuns In Low-Cut Bridal-Inspired Gown

The best revenge after your ex-husband starts seeing Gwen Stefani? Looking hot as hell in a plunging wedding gown on the red carpet.

OK, so that probably wasn't exactly what she was going for, but Miranda Lambert was a vision in white at the Artist's Dinner at the Kennedy Center Honors on Saturday. The country singer stepped out in a floor-length gown with a cleavage-baring bodice accentuated with a sheer band and tiny square accents.

Va-va-voom.

Lambert, who separated from her country star husband, Blake Shelton, in July, recently covered Cosmopolitan's January issue and reflected on the end of her relationship

"Marriage is a tough business, and we gave it our best college try," she told the magazine, adding that she has no plans on dating in the near future.

"I had a great relationship with an amazing man," she said, "so I know what good is. I have a great launching pad for the future. I will never take that for granted."

As for moving on? Lambert's looking forward to this new phase of her life, but it's not always as easy as it seems. "Some of that might mean nights on my porch crying, drinking whiskey, and going, 'Man, this sucks right now,'" she said.

We're with you every step of the way, Miranda.
