10-Year-Old Model April Star Is A Lesson In Self Acceptance

0
0

If you've haven't already fallen in love with April Star, here's yet another chance. The 10-year-old model, who was diagnosed with vitiligo at age 6, has been melting hearts left and right with her stunning good looks and message of self acceptance.

The pint-size cutie credits well-known model Winnie Harlow, who also has vitiligo, with giving her the confidence to pursue a career in modeling.

"I want to be a model because I love taking pictures and watching people look at me and smile," Star told The Huffington Post.

And so far Ms. Star has struck a pose for online boutique Love My Alannah and landed a photo shoot with Essence magazine. Not too shabby!

We got a chance to catch up with the budding model to ask her about a few of her favorite things, how she stays so positive in the face of bullies, who she'd like to model for next, and so much more. Check it out!

How do you deal with bullies?

I do not listen to bullies anymore -- it was hard but now I just ignore them and smile.

When you're sad what do you do to feel better?

When I am sad I listen to music.

What advice has Winnie Harlow given you about living with vitiligo and working in the fashion industry?

Winnie taught me that being different can be both good and bad and that I have to be strong. And just because I look different I cannot let people let me down in this industry.

What is the best fashion tip you've ever received?

To always smile and stay humble.

If you could model for any fashion company which one would it be?

Justice kids store. I love their clothes!

Do you have any hobbies beyond modeling?

Yes, I like to dance, act, and listen to music.

 What's your favorite song?

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

What's your favorite food?

Pizza!

If you could go on a shopping spree with anyone, who would it be? And why?
My two oldest sisters because we have fun shopping together. One of them I love her style and the other one doesn’t let me wear anything I want -- she is very over protective of me.

What are you favorite fashion trends? What should all the kids be wearing right now?

My favorite fashion trends are jumpers. I love bright colors and think we should all wear bright colors all the time.

What's your favorite inspirational quote?

“If you don’t imagine, nothing ever happens at all" by author John Green.

Since you've already met Winnie is there anyone else you're dying to meet?

I want to meet Shaun Ross. I love his swag!

The Perfect Ugly Christmas Sweater For Breastfeeding Moms

0
0

"Ugly Christmas sweaters" are practically the bread and butter of holiday attire these days. They come in countless styles and sizes for kids, adults, babies and even pets -- so many options in fact, that there are themed parties and competitions dedicated to the tacky... er, festive garment.

So, it's only natural that there would be a Christmas sweater for breastfeeding moms.

In honor of the holiday season, the popular Facebook page Beautiful Breastfeeding posted a photo of reindeer sweater that could be convenient for nursing mamas. The post has been shared almost 6,000 times, with many users tagging their breastfeeding friends in the comments.

"Everyone will be fine with this until you take the nose off and put a baby there haha," commented Hayley Ranson Mullins, highlighting the hypocrisy in many popular attitudes toward breastfeeding.

The sweater comes from an Etsy shop called YourSassyGrandma and is available in multiple colors and patterns

While the sweater may not have been intended for nursing moms specifically, the popularity of the Beautiful Breastfeeding post shows it certainly appeals to that demographic.

YourSassyGrandma also has other great offerings that overworked parents can appreciate, like this Christmas sweater with a convenient wine holder.

Too perfect.

Should You Match Your Clothing Colors With Your Hair Color?

0
0
Are you of the mindset that your clothing color choices should go with or match your hair color? If so, you are not alone. I hear this all the time and most often I hear this from people who have chosen to go gray.

I believe your clothing color choices should go with you. In fact, I believe your own personal coloring should serve as the basis for all of your appearance-based color decisions including hair, makeup, clothing and accessories. That way we get to see your best, most vibrant and sparkling self.

The best way to reveal which colors look best on you is by having a color analysis. However, there are some steps you can do on your own to assess whether a particular color matches you. I share these steps with you in the video below.

'Subscribe' to my YouTube channel at this link: http://www.youtube.com/user/CarolBraileyImage.

Bottom line is -- if your current hair color choice does not give off your best and you add on makeup, clothing and accessory color choices that also do not give off your best, you could be making yourself look duller, washed out and even older.

In my opinion, it is always best to match your hair, makeup, clothing and accessory colors to you so that we easily see the most vibrant and glowing you.

I hope this blog post inspires you to wear your authenticity!

Get Your Face Party-Ready in a Hurry

0
0
We've all had those moments when you need to look good in a hurry. Whether it's because you've received a last minute invite to a fancy shindig, engaged in pre-wedding prep procrastination or spontaneously RSVP'd to an event you anticipate needing to look photogenic, certain steps can be taken to ensure your skin looks good in a short amount of time. When I have bold-faced clients, who are a week away from hitting the red carpet for a premier or a major gala, I offer a prescription that's a combination of in-office treatments and at-home regimens, but nothing too drastic. You don't want to try anything brand new or invasive, like Botox, a week before a big event or you're asking for trouble. These are the best options for getting ready without overdoing it.

A Week Out...
if you want long-lasting results and don't mind a bit of discomfort, one session of the Clear + Brilliant laser can deliver the even tone and softer texture you're after for your event and months later. You can continue these treatments for better and better results. Maintain the results of your chosen treatment, by adding a daily microbrasian exfoliation (anything harsher can inflame skin) followed by a barrier repair like my Skin Resurfacing Cream 2 Step System and followed by a peptide rich night cream to your evening routine.

And pay attention to your diet: Taking in lots of fluids, abstaining from alcohol and avoid spicy, salty and sugary foods will all help make skin look smoother, softer and brighter.

Two Days Before...
A lot of people want a plumper face but don't want to go the filler route. You can get a temporary lift and fullness with a microcurrent facial. It stimulates collagen, promotes lymphatic drainage and tightens skin so you will look fresh-faced for your big event. Then add a de-puffing eye gel like my Fastscription™ Instant Eye De-Puff to your morning and nighttime regimen to take down excess baggage. I recommend keeping it in the fridge to boost the cooling properties and enhance its deflating effects.

One day before...
Get glowing with an in-office peel, like our aptly named Radiance Peel. It tingles a bit as it works its magic, but it's not painful. The day after your face has a tight radiant glow. Three days later you'll have some light flaking (which you can chalk up to a beach day) and then -- voila! -- you will again be rewarded with a luminous complexion.

An Hour Before...
To get a temporary facelift effect, I love the Natura Bisse Diamond Ice-Lift. It just tightens everything up, and can even be used around the eyes -- it also makes makeup go on beautifully. And then you can make any creases disappear in an instant with a needle-free line filler (Try, Boots No 7 Instant Illusion Wrinkle Filler. The key ingredient is silicone, which smoothes out fine lines for 10 to 12 hours. And then you can use a hyaluronic acid-based lip plumper (like Dermelect Smooth Lip Volumizer) to create the appearance of fuller lips for a few hours. Though it's not skincare, Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel offers a sun-kissed tint that, along with my prescribed skincare regimen, will make your skin look refreshed and party-ready looking like you just flew in from St. Barth's for the event!

Kitson, Young Hollywood's Favorite Mid-2000s Photo Op, Is Closing

0
0

Nothing lasts forever, and neither does Kitson. Once known as the see-and-be-seen clothing store for young Hollywood's tabloid darlings, the store is now closing all 17 locations, including its famous boutique on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles.

If you are somehow unfamiliar with the store, in the mid- to late 2000s, it was the place you were most likely to see a celebrity in the wild (Paris Hilton practically lived there). The paparazzi knew that, making it a destination for anyone who wanted their photo in Us Weekly that week.

With the news of the retailer's demise, this is the perfect opportunity to look back at many of the celebrities who knew a little retail therapy was the best way to get attention.

Gwyneth Paltrow Thinks Robbery At Her Goop Store Is Good Publicity

According to actress Gwyneth Paltrow, there's a silver lining to stealing.

Paltrow recently opened up a Goop pop-up shop in NYC,  which was subsequently robbed just a few days later. According to the police, thieves broke open a cabinet and made off with $173,000 worth of merchandise

Gwyn's mom, Blythe Danner, told Us Weekly on Thursday that her daughter thought the incident was actually a good thing.

"She said, 'You know, it's OK. It's more attention. It's more publicity for Goop,'" said Danner. "She always has a great spin on things. I admire her tenacity. She's so much like her dad."

Like the old saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

And if you can't make it to Gwyn's Goop shop before it closes it's doors, she's offered up a handy gift guide for the holidays.

On the list? Gold dumbbells, a condom dispenser and a trip to the edge of space, of course.

Rainier Beauty-Brand New Makeup Brand Launches In Asbury Park, N.J.

0
0
In the world of cosmetics, you have your NARS, your Kevyn Aucoin, and of course your MAC. It is very rare though, to see an extremely seasoned and wildly talented artist like Rai Guerre-Nelson take a company like Ranier Beauty and bring it to the mainstream. With his sharp eye and vision for beauty, Rai is building a clientele far beyond this Asbury Park residents dreams. Rai took a break from the palette to chat with us about today's makeup trends, how Ranier Beauty got off the ground and why women need to stop looking "like a Dorito".

2015-12-10-1449779635-8485719-11885317_1685935064975931_6681029959657260044_n.jpg

First off, tell me where and how Ranier Beauty was born?
Rainier Beauty has always been a dream of mine. I've been a makeup artist for over 20 years and have worked for companies such as MAC, Laura Mercier, Nars and Estee Lauder, I always knew that I wanted to create a makeup line of my very own. About 10 years ago, I tried to launch the brand and even had a storefront for it, but because of the real estate crash, the bank couldn't approve a small business loan. I shelved the idea knowing that it just wasn't the right time. I believe that everything happens for a reason and I know that it just wasn't meant to be then. I then went on to managing a multi million dollar business for Estee Lauder at Lord & Taylor in New York City, then got promoted to Education executive for the New York Metro area where I trained, developed and was responsible for a 30 million dollar territory. In retrospect, all of my experiences have led me to this point. I now have all the tools and experience I need to launch my own brand.

What do you want to offer with Ranier Beauty that you think clients may not be able to get anywhere else?
I want to give my clients a makeup brand that has literally been hand selected for them by a long-term industry professional. Consumer friendly pigments that the average woman can use along with the personalized makeup lesson to recreate what I do at the studio.

What do you think are some of the biggest and hottest trends in beauty right now?
As I've said before; I've been doing this for a very long time; so I've seen many trends come and go. A few years ago, girls would come to the MAC counter and show me a picture of Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian and want to look like them. I'm super glad to see that trend go away. The girls these days want beautifully natural, glowing skin and either a bold lip or a neutral smokey eye; not both. "Strobing" is another trend thats huge, it's just adding a beautiful luminosity to the high points of the face.

Conversely, what are some trends that you definitely are ready to see go?
Highlight and contouring needs to stop. Anybody that claims to be a makeup artist can put up a Youtube tutorial and makes it look like paint by number. STOP! You have girls looking like a Dorito when the fact is she probably doesn't even need it.

What do you think the biggest mistake ladies make when they are applying makeup?
I think that ladies that have any kind of blemish make the mistake of immediately going to a full coverage foundation. I educate my clients to use a sheer to medium foundation (I prefer a tinted moisturizer) then go in with a pigmented concealer and cover what you need to, that way you still look flawless. You want people to say "Wow! you look beautiful!" not "Oh I love your makeup!"

Asbury Park seems to be where Ranier Beauty was born. What do you think brings beauty to our wonderful city?
Rainier Beauty was definitely born in Asbury Park. I feel that the community as a whole is what makes this city beautiful. It is what drew me to Asbury Park 15 years ago from Brooklyn, NY, and also why I probably won't ever leave.

What's next for Rainier Beauty?
Rainier Beauty is launching the brand category by category beginning with lip liners, lipsticks and glosses, then building on that, this way every category gets its time in the spotlight. Eventually, Rainer Beauty will cater to professional makeup artists in the industry, providing pro products that can only be accessible to them in New York, such as mixing palettes and pure pigments.

So many things are happening for you right now; give me one word that describes your life right now?
Blessed...

You're Applying Your Perfume Wrong. We're Here To Help.

0
0

When putting on perfume or cologne, do you spray it into the air and walk through the "cloud?" Or do you mist it on as the final step of getting dressed? Believe it or not, there is a right way to apply fragrance, especially if you want the scent to last longer than five minutes.

We interviewed Patti Kapla, the vice president of business development at FragranceNet.com, on the do's and don'ts of applying perfumes. Scroll down for a refresher course on scents and an infographic that illustrates where exactly on your body you should be spritzing.

The best time to apply fragrance is after moisturizing. Once you've bathed or showered, gently dry yourself off, lather up with lotion and then spray on your perfume of choice. Kapla believes that moisturizer provides a base for your fragrance to latch onto.

Make it even easier by pairing with matching shower gels and body lotions. Kapla explains, "Using the shower gel, soap, shampoo, etc. of your fave fragrance will help make your fragrance last all day long! If you don't have the matching lotions offered with your scent, try applying Vaseline or a non-scented moisturizer to your pulse points before you apply your fragrance."

Never rub your wrists together. This fragrance expert strongly cautions against this habit. "You 'break up' the top notes, which are the lightest," she says.

For a lasting impression that won't stink, try the hairbrush trick. Simply spray your perfume or cologne onto a brush before stroking it through your strands. "Fragrance sprayed directly onto your hair may cause [your hair] to dry out," says Kapla.

This Model Is Photoshopping Other Models' Faces On Her Body To Make An Important Point

0
0

With the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show airing earlier this week, androgynous model Rain Dove wants to encourage the lingerie company to stray from the "top of the top" representations of the "perfect human," she told HuffPost Live.

The statuesque model explained to host Josh Zepps on Thursday that she's faced a lot of rejection in the industry for having facial feature often considered too "masculine." So to make a personal statement, Dove recently had a photoshoot inspired by the Victoria's Secret Christmas catalogue and subsequently photoshopped the heads of the company's models onto her body. She explained:

A lot of people feel like I would be a good parts model from [the neck] down. I got the double DD's, the height ... and I didn't know it was going to do so well. Like I said, it ended up speaking to a lot more people that I had thought. And a lot of people said that for them they felt like they could identify with the fact that they just buy these things and they look in the mirror and they feel like they don't look like that person in the catalogue and that they feel like a kind of watered down version of pretty and that's something I've faced in my entire life.

The response to the photos have been mixed, she said, explaining that she pays no mind to the "wonderful death threats" she's received. Instead, she focuses on the positive feedback because her goal is not to chastise the company.

"My goal is to encourage Victoria's Secret and show them that they're not just a brand, they're a movement," she said. "They're a power. They have the ability to inspire young people all across the country, people from all age ranges really, to wake up every morning and feel good about purchasing Victoria's Secret products."

The Best 'Full House' Reunion Of 2015 Yet

Families that star in a sitcom together stay together.

In the latest of many "Full House" reunions that have hit social media since Netflix reboot "Fuller House" was announced last April, Bob Saget, aka Danny Tanner, posed with Candace Bure and Ashley Olsen, aka TV daughters DJ and Michelle Tanner, at "Cool Comedy - Hot Cuisine," a benefit Tuesday for the Scleroderma Research Foundation at New York comedy club Carolines on Broadway.

Saget shared a photo from the event on his Instagram on Thursday.

Though this is the second time Olsen has been spotted with Saget in recent months, it's been confirmed that she and sister Mary-Kate Olsen, who shared the role of Michelle Tanner, will not appear in the reboot. According to Us Weekly, the show will explain Michelle's absence by saying she's away working as a top fashion designer in New York City.

If that story sounds familiar, it's because it's the Olsen twins' real life.

Maybe she'll have a clothing line called DJ and Stephanie

Indulgent Gifts for Your Green Beauty Queen

She eats organic. She composts. She buys her beauty products at Whole Foods and Farmers Markets (and of course the occasional lavish spa). Impress the hell out of her this holiday season by purchasing one of these sumptuous non-toxic beauty gifts:

Tata Harper Natural Glow from Head to Toe

2015-12-13-1450040404-9474552-tataharpernaturalglowsetatcredobeauty1.jpg
This kit is basically a destination spa in a box -- like a 5-star, fluffy robes and orange slices kind of spa. Including full sizes of the brand's Smoothing Body Scrub and Rejuvenating Hand Cream, and travel sizes of the Redefining Body Balm, Revitalizing Body Oil, and Fortifying Body Lotion, this kit actually saves you money because she can spa at home (or at least that's what she'll tell you). $115. Available at Credobeauty.com.

Marie Veronique Serum de Jour and Gentle Retinol Serum

2015-12-13-1450040466-3616779-HuffPost_HiRes1.jpg
This is not her Farmers Market skincare. Give her this highly active (yet gentle enough for sensitive, rosacea-prone skin) duo of power serums from skincare guru Marie Veronique, to arm her with a protective antioxidant arsenal during the day and a potent natural retinol at night. After a few weeks of using these two serums, all the other flower children at the food co-op will be commenting on her radiant skin. Serum de Jour is $90 and the Gentle Retinol is $110. Available at Marieveronique.com.

Beauty Heroes
2015-12-13-1450040541-3883219-BeautyHeroesGift_1.jpg
I usually stay clear of recommending beauty subscription boxes. I see little value in deluxe samples -- it's never enough product to get a real take on whether a product works. And then everything changed when I met my subscription box spirit animal -- Beauty Heroes. This highly curated monthly subscription box features one full-size and one travel size product from a prestige non-toxic, beauty brand. With a three-month commitment at $115, your lovely lady will plant a tree in your honor when she sees brands like Vintner's Daughter, In Fiore, and Laurel Whole Plant Organics, all brands that can cost north (sometimes way North) of $100 per potion. Starting at $115 for three months. Available at Beautyheroes.com.

Kjaer Weis The Glow Kit
2015-12-13-1450040607-3537739-GlowKitCompacts.jpg
Yes, this makeup brand from Australian makeup artist Kristin Kjaer Weis is non-toxic, but it's also just beautiful makeup. All of it. Seriously. Do you know how hard it is to find a makeup brand that performs across all products? Trust me -- I've been searching for that Holy Grail since I was 13 when I bought every Clinique product on the shelf with my Bat Mitzvah money. The Kjaer Weis Glow Kit is basically the radiant chalice of a Holy Grail. Packaged in the brand's signature red gift box, the two stunning silver compacts swivel open to reveal creamy, universally flattering highlighter and bronzer. Bonus: the collectible compacts are refillable. $105. Available at kjaerweis.com.

Jane Fonda Shares Her Anti-Aging Secret (Hint: It's Not Exercise)

At 77, Jane Fonda is still looking great, feeling fit and having the "best sex" of her life. The actress is known for her iconic -- and pretty sexy -- workout videos, but surprisingly, exercise isn't among the things she credits with helping her feel young and vibrant.

She chatted with the Los Angeles Times recently and revealed her keys to staying young -- both inside and out.

"Spiritually and energetically, I feel younger than when I was 20 and 30," Fonda said. "It all has to do with attitude and how you see life ... I wasn’t happy back then when I was 20 and 30; I was depressed. Now I see my past, and I see a future -- and I feel like it’s going to be a good one."

She also added that having a passion and remaining curious about life are keys to staying young at heart.

Fonda clearly has followed her own advice, keeping her career going strong for several decades. She's most recently starred in the Netflix series "Grace and Frankie" alongside fellow Hollywood veteran, Lily Tomlin. And she was just nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as an aging actress in "Youth."

It seems her time is truly the present -- not the past. Though chronologically she might be pushing 80 (she turns 78 later this month), Fonda keeps iterating that she's having the time of her life. She recently told Variety that she even feels younger now than she did as a teen. "With age, two-thirds has to do with spirit, your soul," she said. "I’m way happier now, and I’m way younger now ... The 'good old days' were pretty bad for me. The real good old days are now."

Keep it up, Jane.

Here's Why Women Everywhere Want Harry Styles' Boots

Whether Harry Styles is everyone's favorite One Direction member could be up for debate, but there's no denying that the guy has style.

Besides being known for his long hair (which will be chopped off soon), Styles always makes a statement with bold prints and impeccably chic boots. Thanks to the Instagram account Harry Wore What, it's hard not to know what the boy bander is wearing these days.

People started paying attention to his fashion when he wore sparkly Saint Laurent boots to the band's 2013 appearance on Saturday Night Live. Since then, he's stayed on the designer track, donning floral Gucci prints and of course, more Saint Laurent shoes.

Unlike Styles, we all can't casually afford (or get gifted) pairs of fancy boots -- but that doesn't mean we can't implement his Mick Jagger-influenced look into our own wardrobes. Yes, everybody needs a pair of statement kicks in their rotation, and Styles is here to guide us -- on our boot shopping spree, that is.

Take a glance at four shoe looks below and see how you can copy Styles' style.
