Technicolor Yarn Factory Photos Show Hope For American Industry

0
0

In 2010, photographer Chris Payne stepped through a wormhole into the past. OK, not really. But his discovery had the same surreal quality: An old mill, tucked away in Maine, still manufacturing candy-floss-colored yarns many decades after the outsourcing of the American textile industry.

The Maine mill, Payne told The Huffington Post Post via email, "reminded me of the state hospital workshops I had photographed for my book, Asylum." Payne, who studied architecture prior to his photography career, specializes in photographing old buildings and capturing their structural beauty and resonance through time.

The yarn mill offered something surprisingly optimistic compared to much of his previous work on forgotten structures. "While [the state hospitals] had long been abandoned," he said, "this mill was fully operational, a scene from the past miraculously coexisting with the present."

The result is an almost fairy-tale scene, an glimpse of American industry's bygone glory manifested in technicolor detail.

Photographing a working mill requires bushels of patience, however. "There is not much staging allowed because I cannot alter or interrupt the lines of production," Payne explained. "So I wait, sometimes months, for the right colors to come along, and then a magical moment occurs, if only for a few hours or minutes."

Those moments do occur, as his jaw-dropping photographs testify. Clumps of vivid teal fibers pile against dull industrial machinery, bathed in warm light. Shocking pink skeins hover over the regimented factory floor.

Here and there, too, we see the human element: factory workers adjusting machines and bundling textiles. With his photographs, Payne says, he hopes to both shine a light on the small surviving American textile industry and to celebrate its works. "They share a quiet pride and dignity, and are proof that manual labor and craftsmanship still have value in today’s economy," he told HuffPost.

See a selection of Payne's photos below, and check out more on his website

3 Steps To Take ASAP When You Inevitably Spill Wine On Your Dress

0

Here's what to do when your red wine ends up everywhere BUT in your mouth.
By Jessica Cruel, SELF

Romulo A Yanes

For some, a cup of red wine (or tomato sauce or gravy) is not a refreshing party prop -- it's an embarrassing stain waiting to happen. SELF spoke with Lindsey Boyd, co-founder of laundry and cleaning brand The Laundress, to learn the best method for handling a stain before it turns catastrophic.

1. Rinse the spot with cool water.
Before the spill sets, run to the restroom and give the fabric a quick rinse with cool water. "Cold water will remove a little bit of the stain," says Boyd. Don't even think about putting the generic antibacterial soap on the spot. If you're especially accident prone, carry a spot remover in your clutch. However Boyd warns against on-the-go sticks, which can actually remove the color in your outfit along with the spill.

2. Use a dishcloth or towel, not a cocktail napkin.
Avoid the stack of paper towel and the roll of tissue when you're ready to dry up the spot. Both options can leave lint on your garment, which makes your attempt to freshen up even more obvious. Another bad move: cocktail napkins. "Colored cocktail napkins bleed," warns Boyd. "You don't want to dip it in water and put on your silk blouse!" Instead ask your host for a dishcloth or lint-free towel.

3. Blot and press, but never rub.
Although the first instinct is to apply water and rub like hell to salvage your dress, always take the gentle approach. Blot and press the stain with minimal agitation. Buffing might spread the spill or create pills in the fabric.

Or, wait it out. It'll all come out in the wash.
Seriously, the spill doesn't look as bad as you think--a huge, wet spot can sometimes be worse. Rest assured, the majority of stains (even red wine and cranberry sauce) can be removed the next day. Boyd suggests to give the spot a quick blot and get on with the merrymaking.

Miss Colombia’s Reaction To Steve Harvey Is Better Than The Internet’s

Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez took Steve Harvey's giant f**k up in stride, after the TV host announced the wrong Miss Universe winner Sunday night.

Harvey crowned Gutiérrez Miss Universe 2015 on live TV before coming back on stage to announce that he had named the wrong winner. Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was the actual winner, and Gutiérrez had to give up the crown after a brief celebration.

“Listen folks, let me just take control of this,” Harvey said. “This is exactly what’s on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. A horrible mistake.”

After the cringeworthy moment, Gutiérrez was stopped backstage and offered a message of gratitude.

"Everything happens for a reason," she said. "So I'm happy for all of what I did for becoming this dream."

Wurtzbach admitted the experience was a unique one.

"It's a very non-traditional crowning moment," she said.

The other contestants knew something was amiss when Harvey's announcement differed from the teleprompter.

"I really feel for Philippines, obviously it was a complete mistake," Miss Australia Monika Radulovic told the Daily Telegraph. "We saw the prompter say Philippines so we knew something was wrong. We couldn't believe what had happened."

Sigh.

Las Vegas: The Ultimate Style Guide

0

Viva Las Vegas!

Swimming pools, shopping, spirits, clubbing , what's your dream?! Las Vegas has it all! It is a fun place to relax, unwind, and show off your great style. I was invited to a style challenge by the site vegas.com to create a collection of outfits. This is my take on how a gal can transition from day to night and be effortlessly chic.

2015-12-21-1450661911-8802215-c600x554.jpg

Lunch and Shopping at the Venetian

I've been to Vegas twice so far. I haven't even scratched the surface when it comes to touring all the ornate hotels. For once in my life...I was truly speechless, ha! (That doesn't happen often!) All I could do was gasp at some of the huge palace like resorts.

Last February I was in town for a milestone birthday and fashion trade show. I decided to spend some time at the Venetian. This hotel definitely has the ambiance of a classy Italian village, and is for sure one of my favorites! The Grand Canal Shoppes satisfied all my shopping needs, and more!

2015-12-21-1450662195-8241758-c600x526.jpg

When shopping time is done, you can do lunch with the "Cake Boss!" Buddy's Ristorante features casual dining, with an upscale atmosphere. The menu has a wide of selection of American and Italian cuisine, including some of Buddy's signature dishes. He may even share his famous Italian birthday cake with
you, yummy!

Stay and Swim at the Trump Towers

My stay at the Trump towers was totally amazing! This is the place to get your glam on. Pampering and spoiling, are on the menu all day long! The room was absolutely gorgeous and so relaxing. The big jacuzzi tub was my friend all week, as well as the pool!

The selection of hotels in Vegas is endless! Each hotel offers such a unique experience. This hotel page offers superb deals on accommodation packages and shows.

Grab your sunnies, throw on your cover up and off to the pool you go! Speaking of the pool, how many swimsuits does a fashionista need?! One suit for each day of the week, of course! Swim suit shopping can be overwhelming to say the least. Fortunately there are many choices to accommodate every body type and shape.

If you are a little self conscience but still want a little edge to your suit, tankinis are the way to go. If you are that bold girl, then by all means invest in a cheeky bikini!

Casual Street Style

Your packing list should also include several pair of shorts and tank tops. I spent a few hours exploring the strip and just taking in all the sights. Wow, It's a long hike to get from one end to the other! I made it half way before I had to hop a bus, the blazing heat got the best of this girl!

Dinner and Clubbing

Whatever your plans are in Vegas, try to spend your money on clothes that multitask. Amid all the fun activities, you might not have a lot of time to spend planning outfits for the day. I also suggest packing of casual/dressy staples that will take you from day to night.

A midi length dress is the perfect anytime, anywhere piece that will transition easily from dinner to a night on the town. Changing out accessories such as shoes, bag, and jewelry can transform your look instantly . Let your accessories do the talking!

2015-12-21-1450663051-7455132-c600x1024.jpg

My favorite night time venue to visit is the Rio. The rooftop Voodoo lounge is just amazing! The view and atmosphere are spectacular. Don't worry, no hexes , just great fun and dancing awaits you!

Perhaps reading this prompted you to plan a trip to the city of entertainment:" The Miracle In The Desert!" Have you been to Las Vegas yet? If so, I'd love to know your favorite styles you wore while there.

Step Inside The Pantone Factory, Where Experts Can See Colors We Can't

0
0

Pantone, the company that describes itself as the dictionary of colors, is a very serious institution. It does not take its hues lightly.

According to a video produced by Quartz, Pantone recruits employees with near-perfect color vision to fill its ink and color standards technician positions. The men and women who safeguard the shades in Pantone's color factory mix paint by hand, dealing with only pounds at a time. Similarly, experts check each swatch of fabric individually to make sure that blue is blue, or -- more accurately -- that serenity is serenity.

In fact, the technicians can, purportedly, see color distinctions that the average person cannot. And Pantone knows this, because its experts are required to take an annual color exam.

For more on the intricacies of Pantone, check out the video above. To see how color addicts catalogued their hues before Pantone, which originated in the 1950s, head here.

How To Do The Easiest Glitter Eye Makeup Look

0
0

Struggle with creating the perfect cat-eye? Need help grooming your own eyebrows? The Huffington Post's "How-To" beauty tutorial series will show you exactly how to master these looks and more. In our latest video, we're showing you a simple and not-so-messy glitter eye makeup look. Get ready to get your shine on!

Yes, you can wear glitter makeup as a grown-up. The trick is in the technique!

When applying glitter eye makeup, keep the sparkle as close to your eyelids as possible. This gives off just the right amount of glimmer while blinking. Stray too high up toward your eyebrows and you'll look like a shiny disco ball.

To prevent glitter from falling all over your face, we recommend holding a tissue under your eye. Be sure to also use a wet brush to apply loose glitter. Intensify your look with a few coats of mascara, and voila!

Watch the video above for the full tutorial and tag @HPLifestyle on Twitter to share your glitter makeup photos.

In the pic, North is clearly having the time of her life as her aunt holds her up in the air. The happiness on the toddler's face is a perfect representation of Khloe's excitement, as she confirmed with her caption.

"My mood when I found out I have 38 million Instagram followers. I love you guys," she wrote.

Can a Man and a Woman Really Have a Platonic Relationship?

0
0
Let's say that a man and a woman are friends. They have known each other for a while and nothing has ever happened between them. By "nothing," they mean that they've never kissed.

The chemistry between them is palpable and they've been in situations where he could have made a move but he did not. And she recognizes this and respects him for it. She knows that his intentions are ostensibly pure.

She may or may not find him attractive, but it doesn't matter. He's a good guy and she likes talking to him. And even if he's cute, she's not interested in him like that. Or so she thinks.

On the flip side, he thinks that she is sexy. He'd love to go out for drinks, take her back to his place, inch closer to her on the couch. But she's made it clear that she's not looking for a relationship or she's already in a committed one. He's a respectful guy and completely understands. He's been placed in the friend zone but he's not bitter about being there. In fact, he embraces the opportunity. He continues to message her because she's a cool chick.

And, honestly, when a hot girl messages you, it's impossible to ignore her. Especially when she's a nice person.

Because of his sincerity, she's comfortable enough to share her secrets with him. Stuff that she's not willing to tell her significant other, perhaps because he is not quite as understanding. Or maybe, it's bad stuff about her boyfriend. And you know what, it doesn't matter how independent a woman is--when her boyfriend messes up, she needs someone to talk to. More specifically, she needs to talk to a friend, someone she can trust.

Similarly, when his girlfriend is acting up, he will need an outlet. He'll need someone to be there for him. And you know what's remarkable... he's willing to have an emotional conversation... knowing that things won't get intimate. Over time, he became the Michael Jordan of the friend zone. He's not going to make a move because he doesn't want to jeopardize the friendship. It means too much to him.

Typically, women tend to be drawn to guys with good personalities. Yeah, of course, looks play a part. But as she continues to laugh uncontrollably at his corny jokes, as she continues to turn to him for his advice, as she continues to feel secure in his presence, she will begin to let down her guard.

On the other hand, men tend to be drawn to women who look good. He was first attracted to her because she had sex appeal but as he got to know her more and more--she became beautiful. Controlling his feelings will become that much more difficult. And when he is vulnerable, he's no longer in control.

The truth is, they may never do anything physical in life. They may never cross the line. But a relationship can never be truly platonic if you have to set up boundaries. A relationship can never be truly platonic if you have to adjust your feelings. A relationship can never truly be platonic if you have to pretend that you are happy with the way things really are...when deep down--you want something more.

And for some friends, they may eventually cross the line. Because, ultimately, we are human.

Disclaimer: If there is absolutely no physical attraction between a male and female, then, I would say, it is possible that they can truly share a platonic relationship. But once a man is attracted to a woman; or the woman is attracted to the man; or both are attracted to each other--the relationship cannot and will never be platonic.

You can, however, pretend that it is platonic. And for some people, this is good enough.

10 Men You Shouldn't Date

0
0
2015-12-21-1450718614-3727087-ScreenShot20151221at12.22.58PM.png

As a Professional Matchmaker and founder of The Dating Lounge app, I am constantly being asked if there are certain types of men that a woman simply should not date. And the answer is, yes there are "do not date" men, especially if you truly want to get married and not waste time on "maybes." Many women will rationalize that their guy isn't one of the do not date guys because they like him and they want him to buck the trend. And of course, it's possible that a particular guy is actually a good guy even if he exhibits some of these characteristics. However, most of the time, "if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it's usually a duck!"

Take a look at this list and really ask yourself if your guy is on it. And if he is, what do you want to do about it?

Mr. Serial Monogamist- This guy goes from relationship to relationship but never winds up marrying anyone. He "seems" committed and ready to go the distance, but he never does. My biggest concern with this guy is what will make you be the woman who will get him to actually commit when he never has with any of the others?

Mr. Comes On Too Fast Too Quickly- This guy met you yesterday and talks about moving in together today. You had your second date with him on Tuesday and on Wednesday, he is inviting you to family dinner. Of course, his interest feels wonderful, after all, you are fabulous. But, let's call a spade a spade, he doesn't even know you yet, so how can he actually know how fab you really are? Be wary.

Mr. Commitmentphobe- This guy is just scared of commitment period. He might have abandonment issues which have made him scared to commit to anyone in fear they will leave him. He will usually admit to you upfront that he has commitment issues but he has worked on them and is "certain" he is ready to commit this time around. My concern with him is that 9 times out of 10, he is just a time suck of your precious time when you could be finding another guy.

Mr. Bobber and Weaver- This guy is shady. He never answers your questions directly. His work situation is shady, his divorce situation shady, his apartment situation shady. He just bobs and weaves through answers. This guy is a charlatan. Move on.

Mr. Excuse- This is the guy who breaks plans, behaves inappropriately and does things to offend you and then always has an excuse as to why he did it. Fine, give him a hall pass, once or twice but after awhile, you need to face facts. The facts are that his guy is an adult and he knows it's wrong to hit on your best friend, get drunk in front of your boss or tell you that you need to lose weight when you are a size 6. Next!

Mr. Showers You With Presents
- This guy is swarmy. Yes, gifts are nice, we all like them. However, what are these gifts replacing or covering up? Are they buying your forgiveness gifts? Are they keeping you hooked a little longer even though he hasn't proposed yet gifts? Or are you one of the lucky ones who found a guy who is good to you and also gives gifts? Just don't be lured in by Chanel Bags and trips to Paris on a whim if that is all that is coming your way.

Mr. Been Around The Block - This guy has dated everyone you know and their mother, literally. Do you really want to date everyone's used laundry? And why does he play the field so much? Is he insecure? Does he not want a real relationship? Does he just like adding notches to his proverbial belt? I don't know the answers to these questions but if I were you, I wouldn't want to stick around to find out.

Mr. Compares You To His Exes- This guy is not over his ex. If he is comparing you to her all the time, then he still wants her. He may say he is over her, but he's not. Don't rationalize that all men compare their present gals to their ex's because they do NOT. They might do it occasionally in their heads but they certainly don't do it out loud and they certainly don't do it all the time. Ask yourself- Do you feel like you will be his future or will "she" be coming back?

Mr. Controlfreak- This guy has mommy issues and that makes him want to control everything, including your life. You are an adult, don't you want to make your own decisions? Do you honestly want someone to tell you what to wear, what to eat, where you can go and who you can spend time with? I doubt it. Do you constantly want to be criticized? This guy has a problem with everything and no matter what you do, it will never be good enough for him. Run!

Mr. Alcoholic- This guy is a drunk. He might tell you that he is a "social drinker" but you know the difference. He might say everyone drinks as much as he does. No. They. Do. Not. And when this guy gets drunk, which is often, he gets mean and nasty. He will make you cry and feel like crap, a lot. He is not a good look for you.

Do you have other Do not date guys you want to add to my list?

This Family's Star Wars Holiday Card Is A 'Force' To Reckon With

Average holiday cards are for wookiees rookies.

The Krause family from Tustin, California usually sends a fairly typical holiday greeting to family and friends. But this year, they took things to a galaxy far, far away:

"Our mom, Tami, came up with the idea for the card," Mitch "Obi Wan" Krause told HuffPost. "We wanted to do something extremely creative this year, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity."

The family shopped for costumes at a local vintage store before having a photographer set up a special backdrop to get the perfect shot.

We applaud the unconventional spin on a classic holiday card. Well done, Jedis!

Charmed to meet you, Alyssa Milano's new pixie cut!

Milano debuted a brand new haircut to Instagram over the weekend with the caption "Short hair don't care."

The drastic change from her previous flowing, brown locks caused some fans to question whether or not it had anything to do with a recent scandal with WEN hair products, which she had previously starred in a campaign for

The actress, who thanked her glam squad for the new 'do, pulls off the choppy, ultra styled look with ease -- not an easy feat for most.

While not quite as short as her cut back during her "Charmed" days, we're still having some major flashbacks right about now.

Ballet Dancers Shred Their Way Through Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Queen's slow burn of an anthem "Bohemian Rhapsody." To honor the epic number, English National Ballet's lead principal Erina Takahashi and first soloist James Forbat performed an epic duet that truly captures what it feels like to be just a poor boy from a poor family.

With poise and drama, Takahashi and Forbat leap, twirl and bend their way through the six-minute rock opera, yielding a performance that would put even Wayne and Garth to shame. It's so legit, Queen's official channel even uploaded the video to YouTube. Check it out above. Try not to head bang so much you miss the good parts.

The Woman I Want to Be

0
0
I've made a New Year's Resolution every year that I can recall. Usually, the resolution has had something to do with improving my appearance: losing weight, working out more, eating less and generally doing what I can to morph myself into who I thought I was supposed to be. That thin, perfect example of the modern woman who does everything that's asked of her excellently, never gets hurt or upset and constantly performs to the standards set for her by others.

This year, I'm lighting that ritual on fire and doing something different. I'm not going to let anyone else define who I should be -- I'm going to actively define it for myself, and rather than dumping all of my transformative efforts into perfecting my body, I'm going to think holistically about the woman that I want to be.

2015-12-21-1450663923-7158539-MPs1_0022.jpg

When I look around myself at the women that I get to interact with on a daily basis, it is almost never their looks that blow me away (although, to be clear, I get to roll with some really pretty ladies as part of the TRUE Curves board!). I am constantly blown away by how loving, smart, capable, hilarious, hard-working and accomplished these women are.

I am impressed by all that they are bringing about for themselves, the myriad duties that they juggle between their careers and families and the fact that they always have a smile on their faces, even when things are tough. These are the qualities that I'm focused on trying to emulate in 2016, not just physical appearance. So my profile of the woman that I want to be is based on cultivating this kind of inner beauty.

2015-12-21-1450663989-6710324-MPs1_0143.jpg

The woman I want to be is kind, open-hearted and loving. She is aware of the feelings of everyone around her and does what she can to take care of people, while always being mindful of her own needs and boundaries.

The woman I want to be is patient and trusts the timing of things as they unfold, organically. She isn't stressed, or frazzled or crazed. She works calmly and consistently and follows her creative instincts. She allows the magic to happen.

2015-12-21-1450664687-3540396-MPs1_0007.jpg

The woman I want to be is comfortable in her own skin. She treats her body like a temple, and is always striving to take amazing care of herself, but she doesn't hold herself to an unattainable standard of perfection.

The woman I want to be acknowledges the inherent perfection of her body. She understands that amazing self-care is the key to being the best version of herself, which makes her more available to make a positive impact in the world.

2015-12-21-1450664079-5011309-MPs1_0106.jpg

The woman I want to be knows what she brings to the party. She is confident in her strengths without overplaying them, and aware of her weaknesses without letting them stall her progress. She doesn't let any of it hold her back from pursuing her dreams and strives to make a positive impact in everything that she does.

The woman I want to be forgives easily. She doesn't hold on to petty disputes or past hurts. She releases negative feelings and leaves everyone around her free to behave as they will, because their behavior doesn't affect her.

The woman I want to be isn't afraid of taking risks and making mistakes. She acknowledges mistakes as part of the creative process. She takes the criticism and feedback that comes in, learns from it, and moves on. Quickly.

We all have the ability to define who we want to be and go after it. During the month of January, I'm going to be expanding our #healthyatanysize #girlsquad and introducing you to some amazing women who embody the qualities that I've described here, but are all unique and amazing in their own ways. I hope that you choose to use this content as inspiration for your own personal growth as we ring in the end of one year and the start of a new one by becoming the woman that you want to be, too!

Beauty Confessions: I Use This Weird Thing to Line My Lips (and It Works!)

My confession: Using eyeliner on your lips as a way to prep and prime them for lip colors is actually more effective than using normal lipliner. Seriously, using the pencil that you typically reach for to define your eyes (depending on your skin tone, of course) actually works better than the made-for-your-lips pencils that you probably have in a bunch of different shades.

I actually discovered this method by mistake (everything happens for a reason, y'all). I was primping for a night on the town, which obviously required a super bold lip color, but couldn't find my trusty clear lipliner that I always turn to when I want to line my lips. I noticed my favorite nude eyeliner, Rimmel London Exaggerate Auto Waterproof Eye Definer ($7) in the shade In The Nude, on my vanity and thought, "Here goes nothing!" as I swiped it all over my lips. Almost immediately after putting it on, I realized that this product actually might work better than lipliner because it's super waxy (in a good way -- any color you add on top will really stick to it), waterproof (HUGE plus), comes in a flesh-toned shade that works with any lip color and has a retractable pencil, so you always have a sharp point instead of something dull that requires constant sharpening. Here's how to hack flawlessly lined lips without liner on hand:

STEP 1: OUTLINE YOUR LIPS WITH EYELINER

First things first! I lined my lips with the pencil, carefully tracing just outside my natural lip line. Make sure you have a super smooth, clean line. This will act as a sort of trap for the lip color and keep it from feathering.

STEP 2: FILL IN YOUR LIPS WITH EYELINER

Next, fill in the rest of your lips with the eyeliner, covering them up completely with the nude shade. Blot them together.

STEP 3: ADD YOUR LIP COLOR

Now for the fun part: Slick on your favorite lipstick color as you normally would. It should glide on smoothly, have a strong color payoff and, most importantly, last for a long time.
