What Introverts Love About San Diego

$

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

The Pacific Ocean is anything but pacified. The Pacific always wants something: sailors, surfers, lovers, children, my feet, the sun for dinner. The noise—some evenings—is deafening and defying conversation. Yet, its constant roar is the most perfect quiet I have come to know.

I grew up on the East Coast, believing that the sun rose from the cold Atlantic, not ever pondering where it might find itself at the end of a day. Many years later, I would fall in love with a West Coast man who would show me that the sun tucks itself into the Pacific at night—with a green flash as it disappears on the horizon if you’re lucky enough to catch it.

I fell in love with his beautiful busy city—San Diego—which surprised no one but me. San Diegans know they have it good. But how could I fall for this city of extroverts, bronzed and glowing, always out and about?

Freeways, jammed. Restaurants, packed. Beaches, full.

Except at sunset.

Sunset is when the introverts come out to play in San Diego. The crowds are long gone, and the sand has gone cool underfoot. I love this time of day at the city’s beaches. I never know whom or what I’ll see. Children, lingering in the chilly surf. Couples on vacation. Photographers like me. Fading words in the sand. Ruby red feathered seaweed. A heart-shaped stone.

The real gift is the sunset itself. In San Diego, the sun never sets the same way twice. The sky can turn from flame to pastel pink to violet-gray in 20 minutes. Sometimes, the sky is painted with clouds. Sometimes, like tonight, the sky is cloudless and hazy: a straightforward sunset, no frills or fancy shows.

I feel small beside this ocean. I like this feeling—I like to know my place in the world, especially here, in this strange, bright, and smiling city. My place here is at the edge of the city, where it feels much like the edge of the world.

7 Myths About Shampoo You Need to Stop Believing

You've probably been washing your own hair for decades by now, right? You'd think you--and the other few billions of people on this planet--would have it down pat, but a Google search of "how often should I shampoo" yields more than 13 million results. Couple that with all the recent shampooing trends (read: co-washing, no-pooing), and suddenly, sudsing up is no longer child's play. That's why we asked top stylists (and one scalp expert!) to list the biggest myths about shampoo they wish people would stop believing.

Myth: You should wash your hair every day. "For the most part, washing your hair every day is not great. Washing daily produces more oil, and the hair gets even oilier, faster. People think that daily washing would help, but it actually has an adverse effect. Washing two or three times a week is good." --Teddy Charles, a hairstylist who works with Amber Heard and Taylor Swift

Myth: Shampooing will increase shedding. "When you shampoo, all that sheds is what was supposed to shed that day (about 50 to 100 hairs). If you don't brush regularly, it may seem like more." --Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist and scalp expert in New York City

Myth: You should follow the instructions on the bottle and shampoo twice."This is completely false unless you have a big buildup of product or dry shampoo in your hair." --Fusco

Related: 51 New Hair Ideas to Try in 2016

Myth: You should never use conditioner because it weighs your hair down. "The truth is there are many different types of conditioners on the market. You just need to know which one is best for your hair. For example, if you have fine hair and want volume, my go to would be Matrix Biolage Volumebloom Shampoo and Conditioner. For color-treated hair, I love Matrix Biolage Colorlast Shampoo and Conditioner." --Nick Stenson, a hairstylist who works with Shay Mitchell and Rumer Willis

Myth: You should always use shampoo and conditioner that match. "You can cocktail them. I'll use color-treating shampoo with volumizing conditioners for fine-haired redheads, or I'll use a smoothing shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner for thick, unruly, curly hair." --Matt Fugate, a hairstylist who works with Karlie Kloss and Cheryl Burke

Myth: You should always use shampoo before you use conditioner. "You can reverse shampoo on days you want volume. Condition your ends for shine and health, then rinse, and then shampoo your roots for volume. Team that with a cold rinse to lock down the cuticles, and your hair is clean, shiny, and full of life." --Fugate

Myth: You need to shampoo curly hair. "For thicker, curly, and coarser hair types, try co-washing, which is washing your hair with just conditioner. Curly hair tends to be drier, so you want to refrain from removing the natural oils from the scalp and hair. Try a product like Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner. It gently cleanses the hair and removes product buildup." --Lacy Redway, a hairstylist who works with Lupita Nyong'o and Maya Rudolph

Let's Say Our Goodbyes To These Terrible Beauty Trends Of 2015

$
0
0

Who doesn't love a good beauty trend? This year we celebrated a slew of looks, new and old. "Bronde" became a thing, platinum hair made a comeback and simple nail designs joined them to make waves on the runways.

That being said, there were some trends that came into our lives that we would rather not see in the new year. Sorry, not sorry, but frosted lipstick didn't really make a convincing comeback. Oh, and that Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge? Let's just say those horrifying results are just one reason to side-eye any Internet phenomenon.

So, before we toast to 2016, let's say our goodbyes to the beauty trends and rid our souls of clip-on man buns. Take a look at the seven trends we're dropping in 2016, and don't forget to add your suggestions in the comments below.

DROP: Frosted lipstick

Yes, we tried it, but we've come to the conclusion that Mariah Carey is pretty much the only person who can really pull off a frosted lip look.

TRY: If you want a shiny look, just swipe a gloss over your lipstick. It's that simple.

DROP: Glitter roots

Some trends aren't worth the mess, so glittery roots can take a backseat with its particles-gone-rogue.

TRY:  Anything but glitter! Touch up your roots, go for a different color or just let 'em grow out.

DROP: Coffin nails

According to Pinterest, coffin nails was a popular pinned trend. Not only is the name sort of creepy, the shape isn’t actually that healthy.

TRY: A shorter, "squoval" shape that will protect your nails against breakage, tears and scratching someone's eyes out.

DROP: Clip-in man buns

It is virtually impossible to make these hair extensions look real. And what an embarrassment would it be to have your clip-in man bun fall out in the middle of an intense make-out session?

TRY: Growing out your hair to achieve the real thing. Yeah, it may take longer, but it's certainly worth the wait. Or you can simply sport your hair as is, no matter the length.

DROP: Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge

This tragic and dangerous beauty trend that uses a shot glass to "instantly" plump up lips illustrates just how far young girls are willing to go to emulate what they see on TV.

TRY: Faking a fuller pout by slightly overdrawing your lip line with pencils or wearing a high-shine lip gloss to help create the illusion.

DROP: Purposefully clumpy eyelashes

Ouch! While the beauty editors and writers saw models painstakingly wearing mascara-clumped lashes backstage during New York Fashion Week Spring 2016, we could only imagine how many actual lashes they had left after removing the thick makeup.

TRY: Intensifying your natural lashes with falsies. Whether applying a full strip of fake eyelashes or adding on few individuals, this is a way better method.

DROP: Excessive contouring and highlighting

Unless you're a celebrity with your own glam squad or posing for a magazine editorial, leave this makeup technique to the pros. If there was ever a thing as too much makeup, this is it.

TRY: Soaking up some sun safely… and enhancing your natural glow with a good bronzer.

Vladimir Putin Goes Shirtless Again For New 2016 Calendar

Vladimir Putin appears shirtless yet again in a bizarre new calendar that's titled "All Year With The President Of Russia."

The Russian President fishes bare-chested in one of the snaps from the 2016 edition. Other images from the calendar posted online feature him working out, looking serious in military uniform and signing autographs for children.

But the political strongman also shows his sensitive side. There are photographs of him sniffing a flower and cuddling up to a dog.

"Dogs and I have very warm feelings for one another," he's quoted as saying in the caption.

Other words of wisdom include the menacing-sounding, "no one will ever get military superiority over Russia" and the thankful, "I like all Russian women. I think Russian women are the most talented and the most beautiful."

Putin recently praised prospective Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying he was "very talented, no doubt about that."

Perhaps he sent him a copy?

10 Much-Needed Reminders That Harry Styles Did Not Cut His Hair

The One Direction fandom is still in full force (obviously), despite the band's hiatus. This means that in order for Directioners to get their fix, the Internet will have to come together and create... a hoax.

#OhNoHarrysHair is a trending topic on Twitter and once again, everyone is talking about Harry Styles' hair.

Don't panic, the rumors aren't true. That is as far as we know. The singer hasn't made a public appearance since the band's performance on The X Factor UK finale in mid-December.

It seems as though the Directioner squad is just bored and finding ways to keep fans talking about the boys.

Looks like things are still long and flowing for Harry. So take a beat and enjoy these reminders that Harry is still, well... hairy.

Let's rejoice at the fact that Styles hasn't cut his hair... yet.

HuffPost Live's Top 10 Celebrity Interviews Of 2015

$

0

Over the last 12 months, HuffPost Live has played host to musicians, models, movie stars, authors and even a former president. It's been another year of thought-provoking, news-making interviews, and as 2015 draws to a close, it's the perfect time to revisit the unforgettable conversations that streamed through your laptop, your iTunes account or your new favorite mobile entertainment network.

Legendary musician David Crosby pulled no punches during a rollicking conversation with HuffPost Live's Alyona Minkovski in June. From his disdain for Kanye West and SeaWorld to his strained relationship with Neil Young, Crosby was an open book, including in his tenderhearted update on the ailing health of his longtime friend Joni Mitchell, who had recently suffered an aneurysm.

This summer, The Runaways bassist Jackie Fuchs opened up about being raped by her manager in 1975, when Fuchs was just 16, in a powerful interview with HuffPost's Jason Cherkis. After the story was published, Fuchs joined HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani for a revealing on-camera conversation about the trauma of being raped in front of nearly a dozen people in a hotel room and the pain of hiding her story for four decades.

The press tour for "Trainwreck" made a pit stop at our studio in July, bringing with it a cargo of hilarity. With Judd Apatow, Bill Hader and Vanessa Bayer all in one place, the laughs never stopped. Hader shared a spot-on impression of Apatow, who also looked back on interviewing Jerry Seinfeld as a teenager in 1984, and the entire group responded to former Disney CEO Michael Eisner's claim that "the hardest artist to find is a beautiful, funny woman."

It's not every day that you get a half hour with a former leader of the free world, and rarely is a conversation with a politician as open and revealing as this one with President Jimmy Carter. In a July interview about his memoir "A Full Life," Carter opened up about his partnership with his wife Rosalynn, his take on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and why he thinks Jesus would approve of gay marriage.

It doesn't get much more candid than this. When hip-hop artist Future dropped by HuffPost Live in July to chat about his album "DS2," he held nothing back in discussing his well-documented personal life. Perhaps the greatest gem was his reaction to the news that his ex Ciara and her new flame, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, are abstaining from sex until marriage. Future admitted that while Ciara didn't make him wait, she did insist that they pray together after doing the deed.

When "SNL" star Jay Pharoah dropped by HuffPost Live in August to discuss his comedy special "Can I Be Me?", it was as hilarious as you would expect, complete with gut-busting impressions of Eddie Murphy, Kevin Hart and Stewie from "Family Guy." But the conversation also took a surprisingly serious turn, in which the comedian opened up about suffering from a deep depression as an overweight teen. "At the time, when I was massively depressed like that," Pharoah said, "I really didn't want my life anymore."

When Salma Hayek visited HuffPost Live in August, the country was still smarting from Donald Trump's controversial characterization of Mexicans as criminals and rapists. During the interview about her film "Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet," the Oscar nominee analyzed Trump's problematic rhetoric, shared stories of her own experience with racial discrimination and explained why she feels ostracized from Hollywood studios.

If you've ever seen an episode of "Project Runway," you know Tim Gunn is not afraid to say what he feels. His sharp tongue and quick wit were on full display in this delightful interview from November, in which he dressed down Kanye West's fashion designs and explained why he can't help but gag when someone brings up the name Kardashian.

Honesty is always in style, and fashion designer Donna Karan proved that during this November conversation about her book My Journey. Karan opened up about having an abortion, falling for her second husband while still married to her ex and her relationship with famous friends Barbra Streisand and Anna Wintour.

HuffPost Live's most controversial celebrity interview of the year came with just days remaining in 2015. R. Kelly dropped by on Dec. 21 to discuss his new album "The Buffet," but things took a turn when host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani asked about Kelly's long history of sexual misconduct allegations. After deflecting questions and commenting on his interviewer's appearance and intelligence, Kelly walked off set mid-conversation and ended the segment early, prompting discussions across the Internet about whether we should consider the personal flaws of an artist when we decide whether to consume his art.

The 5 Fashion, Beauty And Home Decor Trends To Invest In In 2016

$

A new year means all kinds of things coming at you -- a new year, new month, new season. You probably already spent at least one night dreaming up all your goals and things you want to accomplish, or guilting yourself into making fitness resolutions from all the indulging you did during the holiday season. It's already exhausting, and we're not out of the end of December yet.

At least your beauty, home and fashion investments do the work for you. Treat yourself, because really, these are the kind of investments that pay off, too.

2015-12-28-1451330453-6419010-ScreenShot20151228at7.56.10AM.png

1. Blue Beauty. Yes, it's bolder than your taupe/tan/just enough shimmer to be dangerous usual, but blue can work for you. It's a trend that can be subtle or completely over the top, entirely depending on you. If bright blue isn't your thing, navy is the answer. The eyes are where it is at this year, but if you're not into blue on the lids or lashes, the mani-pedi can do the trick. Shadow, Nars Cosmetics

2015-12-28-1451330719-5269777-ScreenShot20151228at11.24.50AM.png

2. Block Heel. Put the stiletto to rest, tuck away the kitten, and ditch the flats for the new season. The block heel has your back with a little of all three. You get the height of your treasured stiletto, with the comfort of the kitten or the flat. What's great about this trend isn't that it's just totally workable -- you'll be able to hustle through all your new season goals and ambitions in comfort and style. Count us in. Shoe, Meghan Says

2015-12-28-1451331054-3571418-ScreenShot20151228at11.29.06AM.png

3. Serenity. Or not, because Pantone named not one but two Color of the Year winners this year and now you can choose. Either one can get the job done to update your home, makeup bag or wardrobe, but Serenity blue has that never-been-seen-before vibe that feels all the excitement you want from a new item and a new year. Keep it simple with a touch or two, or go big. This color doesn't overdo it, and can come in a huge range of hues for a fit that's perfect just for you. Rug, Wayfair

2015-12-28-1451331298-767151-ScreenShot20151228at11.34.36AM.png

4. Shapes. Circles, triangles, squares. It's all ultra relevant for 2016. Look for this trend in everything from home decor to fashion and style items. You'll find shapes large or small, combined together in different sizes, or contrasting shapes within the same piece. Regardless, work it your way first by selecting the shape that speaks your unique taste and personality, and play and experiment from there. Vase, Jonathan Alder

2015-12-28-1451331494-5580374-ScreenShot20151228at11.37.34AM.png

5. Ruffle. It's oh so pretty in any outfit or on a fashion item of any kind, and thankfully there should be plenty of just that to choose from in 2016. It's not just in the subtle form, but bold and dynamic - in fact, ruffles will get outright audacious and obnoxious and that is the way we like it. Though you can still work the look with something sweet and simple. Ruffle won't just be for the fashionista set -- look for it on as trim to throw pillows and blankets, linens of all kinds and window treatments for the home this year, too. Just be a little discriminating with your ruffle selections for your casa to avoid a dated look. Top, Zara

Jazz Up Your Gym Hair for that New Year's Resolution

$
0
0
It isn't 2016 yet, but "who's waiting?" Lots of us have already started on our New Year's resolutions with a gym membership or running schedule. This is serious stuff, but that doesn't mean we can't look fantastic.

Typically, we pull our hair back into a ponytail, call it good and hit the treadmill and weights. That's not bad. Ponytails are on a tremendous roll, appearing on most of the top red carpets. But what about this:

• Try braiding. To do a classic fishtail braid, divide the ponytail into two sections, A and B. Take a small piece from section A and cross it over to section B. Then take a small piece of section B and bring it over to section A. Repeat that until you have reached the end, then use a hair band or hold.

• Here's another one, this time a side braid. Pull the hair back and over to one side. Braid the hair starting behind the ear and just under the cheekbone. Finish with a soft tie or elastic hold. Never use a rubber band (you only need to make that mistake once to learn the lesson).

Bobby pins and fun clips can be integrated in ANY style from braids to ponytails, or just when you pull a section to the side to get it away from your face. These accessories have hit a new peak in creativity with everything from rhinestones to red roses incorporated for added drama, and they are so inexpensive.

Top Knots are another easy spin on gym hair, a fast way to get those locks out of the way but, like the ponytail, top knots are frequently seen on the red carpets and lofty runways of the fashion elite.

• Star by putting your hair in a ponytail up high on your head. Take the hair and begin twisting until it starts to coil around itself. Then use bobby pins to hold it in place around the bun and near the scalp. This couldn't be much easier and it looks great!

A word about 'second-day' hair. It's actually easier to execute an updo after you've gone a couple days (or more) without washing. The hair isn't so soft and silky like it is freshly washed and clean. It has more texture and the leftover product makes it easier to style, giving it more hold and traction.

Everlane Sale Gives Customers The Option To Pay What They Want

$

0

It's a development Priceline would be proud of. Minimalist online retailer Everlane, the purveyor of those pants, will let customers name their own prices for a selection of its merchandise over the next week in an effort to "move overstock."

You can gain access to the sale by creating an account with Everlane or logging in. Then it's possible browse through a selection of products with three available price options, listed from most affordable to most expensive.

But before you opt for the cheapest price, you should know there's a catch that's both eye-opening and a bit discouraging. Everlane will let you know exactly where your money is going for each option.

Choose the least expensive option, and the brand says your money covers only the cost of production and shipping, with nothing left to contribute to overhead for Everlane's 70-person staff. Go for the middle option and you help cover a small amount of that. Choose the priciest of the three sale options and you not only cover those costs, but are told your money allows the company to "invest in growth." Plus you get a "thanks!"

While many retailers are having sales during this time of year, the "name your price" model provokes a specific reaction, said Stephen Terracciano, a board certified specialist in cognitive and behavioral psychology.

"People like to be in control, and when we're given choices we feel like we're actually in control of our experiences. So just by having those three choices we can decide, 'Am I feeling generous today?' or 'Will I feel better knowing I only paid for what it costs to produce and ship the item?'" he said.

Everlane is already known for transparency about where its products are made and the associated costs and markups, but Terracciano explained that the brand is tapping into a certain behavior consumers exhibit.

"I imagine people who shop on the site this way will be more apt to do it again, because it's probably very enforcing to know they saved $40 on a pair of shoes they might have spent the full amount on."

If you can stomach making this kind of decision, there are some great deals to be had on the site -- not to mention 24 hours of free shipping for new members.

So, which option would you choose? Everlane didn't share with us which option consumers are choosing the most, but you can sound off in our poll below.

7 Struggles Of People Who Bite Their Nails

$
0
0

There are precisely zero reasons to bite your nails.

Nail biting is unsightly, it can damage your body and it's often a visible result of stress -- yet so many of us still do it without a second thought.

Nail biting occurs most often during puberty, with about half of all children between the ages of 10 and 18 biting their nails at one point or another.

But not all adults are able to kick the bad habit.

While very few people are seriously affected by nail biting, there are plenty of little disadvantages that plague the lives of casual nail biters.

Below, 7 struggles any nail biter will relate to:

1. You have no idea you're stressed until it's too late.

You look down and realize your fingers are an uneven, jagged mess, and that's when it hits you: You need to find a way to chill out, and STAT.

Nail biting has long been associated with stress and anxiety, and according to Dr. Richard O’Kearney, a psychologist in Australia, nail biting is a way to distract ourselves from bad thoughts or feelings.

“The function it has -- probably across all people who do it -- is originally to manage negative feelings,” O’Kearney says. “It is generally benign and learned as a habit, and may function to manage distress."

In other words, nothing says you need to relax like freshly nibbled nails.

2. You'll have perpetual hang nails.

Nail biters are caught in a never-ending loop of biting, ripping and tearing. Biting your nails can damage the skin underneath the actual fingernail, which can then result in hangnails -- which, of course, are just begging to be picked at.

The roughness of hangnails leads to more picking and before you know it, you've hit the nail-biting trifecta: a bleeding, swollen, potentially infected nail

3. The urge strikes at the most inopportune times.

When you gotta bite, you gotta bite. For many of us, there is no rhyme or reason to when the urge will strike, but when it does, you're powerless to resist it.

You might be sitting in a meeting or even on a first date when you notice that one, perfectly grown nail just begging to be ripped off. It doesn't matter that everyone will be grossed out by you, in that moment, not even national news cameras could stop your hand from gravitating to your mouth.

4. There isn't always a discrete way to discard "clippings."

Will your colleague notice when you dump a whole pile of nails into the trash bin by his desk? Will your new boyfriend see the secret stash on your bedside table you forgot to throw out? How about the neat pile you left in your car's cup holder because you were bored in traffic?

That's the awkward predicament we nail biters frequently find ourselves in.

Who knows if people notice. But even if they do, it won't stop us from biting, because...

5. We know it's disgusting -- but we enjoy it too much to stop.

We know it's unattractive. We know it grosses you out. We know we really should stop. But even as we see your disgusted face, judging us yet again, we can't resist the urge.

The American Psychiatric Association's DSM, short for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, actually categorizes "pathological groomers" like nail biters together with mental disorders like OCD. But as NPR points out, there is one significant difference: whereas people with OCD don't find any fun in being OCD, pathological groomers enjoy their compulsion

"It's rewarding," Carol Mathews, a psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco told NPR. "It feels good. When you get the right nail, it feels good. It's kind of a funny sense of reward, but it's a reward."

6. We have manicure envy.

We'll never have a french manicure. We don't know all the clever Essie names by heart. We'll always be slightly ashamed when someone's gaze innocently falls on the stubby ends of our fingers.

And when we do decide to try a manicure, let's just say the manicurist's disapproving sigh and embarrassing lecture about letting our nails grow is not uncommon.

But we know the truth: stubby nails can be beautiful too!

7. Ineffective scratching.

You've just reduced all your fingers to perfectly soft and rounded edges. You're feeling great about this achievement when suddenly it hits you: a deep, cloying itch. Your freshly shorn nails are totally useless to you. It's like trying to scratch with oven mitts on.

And that's when you question your commitment to nail biting. Because the only urge worse than wanting to bite your nails is wanting to scratch something till it stops itching.

2015 was the year of short-ish hair, and Miley Cyrus got on board with just days to spare.

The bold songstress debuted an adorable ombré bob on Instagram Monday, the product of what appears to be an attempt to grow out her pixie cut.

Cyrus' locks have slowly but surely gotten longer and longer under those wild wigs over the past few months, so it's refreshing to see this new, softer look.

No word on if she's growing it as long as it was in the "old Miley" days, and no word on how long this look will actually last -- so let's all enjoy it for now.

"Pretty Little Liars" actress Ashley Benson has gone back to blond.

The 26-year-old posted photos on Instagram yesterday of her new 'do, captioning it simply, "#blonde." It appears she's already having more fun with her hair color (or at least a very convincing wig!) after about a year of being a brunette.

Benson, who usually sports blond hair for her "PLL" character Hanna Marin, previously told Cosmopolitan that she prefers to be a brunette.

"Brown hair makes me feel more myself," said Benson in Cosmo's January 2014 issue. "As a blonde, I get categorized as the bitchy popular girl for roles, and I just want to be the normal girl."

3 Bobby Pin Tricks to Keep Those Suckers in Place

Oh, the humble bobby pin. It is quite possibly the most used--and misused--hair accessory of all time. And for good reason: It's cheap and it gets the job done (sometimes). If you find yourself using a gazillion pins to secure a simple twist or you find them everywhere but your head by the end of the night, you're not using them correctly.

Here, three easy tricks to finally get a hold of things.

1. Coat pins first. Dole out a fine mist of dry shampoo or hair spray before sliding them in. The spray will give the pins--and thus, your hair--something extra to hold onto.

2. Insert pins wavy side down. The grooved ridges are designed to pick up hair, while the flat side locks it all into place (and looks prettier from the outside).

3. Crisscross them. This is especially helpful for those with fine hair. Do steps one and two, then finish up by inserting the pins one on top of another to really anchor everything in.

How to Break Up Gracefully

If the holiday pressure of your relationship is hitting home right now, you're not alone. As a dating coach, my phone has been ringing and the texts are flying back and forth the past week from people who are thinking of calling it quits in the love department.

At the holidays, it's common to be reflective. Singles and couples tend to reevaluate their relationship statuses before the year ends.

When your friends are changing their status to "In a Relationship" or "Engaged," which you will see flooding your Facebook feed, you'll either suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) or FOGO (Fear of Getting Out).

Now that I've filled you with acronyms that might hit a digital nerve, a New York Times article by Aimee Lee Ball lists a variety of apps that will help you dump your not-so-significant other.

Before you push the send button or ignore his or her texts, read these tips on how to end the relationship without a digital twist.

1. Be sure it's what you want to do. Once you start the ball rolling with the "I'm not feeling it any more" conversations, it's hard to take it back. I recommend making a list of what you like and don't like about your current steady sweetheart and see which column is longer. Seeing your deal-breakers in black and white takes the emotions out of a premature breakup.

2. Talk it over with one friend. Find your closest confidant and discuss your feelings with him or her before you do the deed. Show your friend your list and ask them if they think you're overreacting to his nail biting habit or her obsessiveness with texting during a date. Some things are deal-breakers. Others can be saved with a healthy conversation.

3. Ask permission to talk about your relationship. While you may be angsting that your relationship is on its way out, your significant other might things are going well. You know how to schedule a date. Now it's time to schedule a conversation when both of you are present and prepared to talk. Blurting out that you're not happy the day before his or her big presentation at work would be a huge mistake. Don't let your emotions get ahead of you.

4. Ask your partner to make a list. Let your significant other know what's on your list and start off by telling him or her what you like most about them and your relationship. Compliment them on the way they're a great parent, or admire how loyal and devoted they are to their careers. Let them know the things that have upset you about the relationship and then STOP and LISTEN.

5. Don't go "ghosting." While it's common and the easy way out to ghost or disappear by sending texts less frequently to eventually going MIA, it's not the right way to end a relationship. If you were comfortable enough to sleep with him or her, you should find it in your heart to be comfortable enough to have the convo. Don't pull a disappearing act.

6. If it's over, it's over. Lots of couples say they need a break, but let's face it, a break is often just a breakup waiting to happen. Going from being someone's steady squeeze to suddenly being one of three on their weekly date card won't make both people happy. Insecurity will emerge and both of you will wonder what the other is doing when they're not with you. While it's true that giving your partner space is healthy in a relationship, instead of smothering him or her, if the space is permission to paint the town red and post it on social media in the arms of another, it's going to go down badly.

7. Unplug from each others' social media accounts. In my blog on The Huffington Post, "It's Not Complicated: How to Handle a Breakup on Facebook," I wrote about the new Facebook tools, which allows you to see less of your former flame, by preventing his or her status updates and posts to appear in your feed and helps you easily untag yourself from photos of the two of you together. I suggest you read it and make the decision mutually as to whether you will unfriend each other on social media. Staring at his Instagram feeds and monitoring her check-ins will make you sick, online and IRL.

If you've invested time in a relationship with someone, remember to treat them the way that you'd want to be treated. Have the conversation in person and not via text. I know it's the easy way out, but some day you just might become friends with your ex, or even end up across the desk from them in a job interview or sales pitch. Always take the high road, even if you're feeling low.

Wishing you much love and joy in cyberspace, or wherever you may roam. xo
