8 Photos That Capture The Bond Between Women And Their Grandmas

An old handbag. Some vintage jewelry. A beloved sewing machine. All heirlooms of sorts passed on from one generation of women to the next. They might seem like small things at first, but a new photo series captures how important these presents truly are to those who gave them and those who received them.

Photographer Ugne Henriko's new series, "The Gift," was born in collaboration with jeweler Giedre Duoble to show the beauty of the intergenerational relationship. They photographed several Lithuanian grandmother-granddaughter duos, from age 23 to 65, with the gifts passed down.

"The bond between women and their grandmothers is very different from the one between mothers and daughters," Henriko told The Huffington Post in an email. She describes it as, "two women from different generations sharing something spiritual."

Henriko says the aim of the project is to show the passing of values from one generation to the next.

"[The heirlooms are] a symbol of everlasting connection and eternity ... forming a link between two generations and helping to keeping family values alive," she says.

Check out the beautiful photos below and let us know your thoughts in comments.

Tangled hair. Smudged Eyeliner. Outfit fatigue.

Artist Cassandra Calin, a 21-year-old Romanian graphic design student studying in Montreal, manages to perfectly capture some of the peskiest style struggles in her illustrations.

"All my comics are inspired by my real life experiences and the little things that I sometimes consider frustrating," Calin, who began drawing comics when she was 10 years old, told The Huffington Post in an email. "It's a way for me to rant about silly 'misfortunes' in a humorous way, with a bit of sarcasm."

Jeb Bush, Selfie Master, Teaches 'Selfie Training' Class

Voters who don't know how to take a selfie: Jeb Bush is here for you.

Since we're in the midst of the "Selfie Election," it pays to stay informed, and it's no surprise that the candidates have gleaned a thing or two about this important social issue.

Hillary Clinton acknowledged early on that, "For younger people, [selfies are] as important as anything they could have asked me. So I just say, 'OK, we’re going to do it.'"

Ben Carson, on the other hand, wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that, "beyond the obvious narcissism of endlessly photographing oneself and blasting it over social networks for others to admire, selfies are dangerous." He also really hates selfie sticks.

But Bush has got it down to an art, and turned a question asked at a recent fundraiser ("How has the role of the selfie changed [your] candidacy?") into an impromptu stand-up routine glittered with wisdom and punctuated with the classic Bush-Wait-For-Applause shrug.

Here are his fool-proof rules:

1. "It is a requirement that you take one, and I do it with great joy in my heart."

2. Treat it like an autograph: "Look, it wasn't that long ago that people wanted signatures on things. Forget that. Now, it's 'I want my damn selfie.'"

3. Have a long enough arm, "Or [he] will take over."

4. Be young: "Young people do it better than older people."

5. "It's cooler to do it diagonally rather than straight up."

6. Place the camera higher than your head: "You look skinnier."

To give you some perspective, Bush has come a long way since June, when he experienced an awkward encounter with a flustered voter in Iowa.

Today's tech-savvy savant with a "selfie stick of an arm" is hardly recognizable from the Jeb of months passed. And if you practice his steps listed in his six commandments above, you, too, can have selfies that look like this:

This Pasta Purse Lets You Take Your Love Of Carbs On The Go

First there was the pizza pouch. Now, for the slightly more fashionable carb lover, there's the pasta purse.

Rommy Kuperus, a Netherlands-based blogger and designer, boasts a wide selection of wacky items in her Etsy shop rommydebommy, including a giant clutch in the shape of a piece of farfalle. The $100 bag has a pouch that can carry all the essentials any pasta lover might need in their life.

Kuperus offers other, less wearable designs on her site, like a set of sanitary napkin accessories and a salad clutch, but it's her more understated pieces, like the farfalle purse and a biscuit clutch that really get our parmesan grinders going.

Despite their quirkiness, it appears from the site's reviews people love the funny food designs. Reviews call the pieces "so much fun" and "a dream."

Of course, for $100, you could buy enough actual pasta to take with you everywhere you go, but this way is much cuter.

How To Achieve Kylie Jenner's Gorgeous Natural Cover Look

$

0

Kylie Jenner, queen of the contour, looks radically different on her latest magazine cover -- and in the best possible way.

The 18-year-old is Elle UK's February 2016 cover star, and she sports way less makeup than we're used to seeing on her. The natural-looking style was achieved thanks to celebrity makeup artist extraordinaire Pati Dubroff, who created the look along with a creative team and some inspiration from Kylie's big sister Kim.

"When I told Kylie what I was thinking, I pulled out a photo of a cover I worked on with Kim a few years ago for U.S. Marie Claire where I had the same approach -- no makeup makeup," Dubroff told The Huffington Post. "Kylie loved that cover and loved the fresh approach."

The look is especially refreshing on Jenner, whose lavish lifestyle and penchant for heavy makeup make it easy to forget how young she is.

"Going into the shoot, the creative team discussed how we wanted to keep a very youthful spirit to Kylie's look. As we all know she tends to wear a lot more makeup and that can make her look older than she is. I chose to keep her super soft, natural and dewey as a way to enhance her youthful glow," Dubroff said.

So, how was the look achieved? "NO CONTOURING," Dubroff stated, save for a tiny bit on the eyes, and "very few products, mostly to even out skin tone."

Recreate your very own fresh-faced look at home with the steps and products Dubroff used, below:

1. "To even out skin I used EX1 Invisiwear Foundation in F300 ($19.00), a U.K.-based brand that is specifically made for olive-toned skin.

2. "For blush I used EX1 Blusher in Natural Flush ($14.50) on the apples of her cheeks."

3. "For eyes I contoured the socket of the eye with Surratt Beauty Artistique Blush in Grisalle ($32.00), and on the center of the lid and tops of cheekbones added a gentle sheen with Surratt Beauty Artistique Blush in Aureole($32.00)."

4. "I used one coat of brown Benefit They're Real mascara ($24.00)."

5. "For lips I used a few swipes of Laura Mercier Lip Parfait Creamy Coulourbalm in Cinful ($25.00) to give a sheer wash of color."

So there you have it, folks. Possibly the lowest-maintenance Kylie Jenner makeup tutorial yet -- and so, so pretty.

Kanye West Is GQ's Most Stylish Man Of The Year. Here's Why.

$

0

The people have voted, and Kanye West is "on a galaxy that haters cannot visit."

On a bracket of 64 style icons that included Tom Ford, Brad Pitt and Idris Elba, GQ's Most Stylish Man Showdown 2015 came down to Yeezy and model Lucky Blue-Smith -- whose Instafans, while vigilant, just couldn't outvote "the almighty power of the Kardashian social media complex," as GQ put it when they announced that West won for the second year in a row.

So really, Kimye might as well be the winner.

West looks good in a tux or hoodie, wears monochromatic tan and layers of camo, and knows how to match big and baggy with skinny and tight. His win is also likely due to West's rising influence in the fashion industry -- he launched his Yeezy line at New York Fashion Week in February and demand for his Yeezy Boost shoes falls just under Air Jordan status in the sneaker stratosphere -- but that Jenner-West social media bump definitely helped. The family's combined reach hits 232 million people just on Instagram alone.

As for the race, it wasn't even close: West got 520,119 votes to Blue-Smith's 445,073 (for what it's worth, we were rooting for Jeff Goldblum).

Here are some of West's best looks from the year.

93-Year-Old Is Killin' It On Instagram With Her Modeling Shots

Instagram's latest it-girl isn't a model or young starlet -- it's a 93-year-old Japanese grandma. And we're absolutely in love. Meet Emiko, who is the nonagenarian star of her granddaughter, Chinami Mori's, Instagram page.

Mori weaves incredible clothes with vivid designs in a rainbow of bright colors for her grandma to model. Her work was featured on the social media site's blog, where she talked about her craft.

Mori uses a special Japanese weaving technique called "Saori," which allows her to mix up many different colors, resulting in specular patterns.

But as beautiful as her weavings are, we really think it's Emiko that truly makes them stand out. And her granddaughter agrees.

“She’s my favorite person in the whole world,” Chinami tells Instagram. “I make grandma happy, and that’s just so much fun for me, too.”

Emiko isn't the only Instagrandma to take social media by storm. Earlier this year we wrote about the fabulous 90-year-old Betty Bailey, who is also an Instagram star known for her eclectic fashion sense. And of course, there's the ultimate Instagram diva, Baddie Winkle, the 86-year-old who has over 1.7 million followers and has even starred in a fashion campaign thanks to her newfound fame.

Head over to Instagram to see more of Emiko's photos.

This Video Nails The Makeup Trends That Just Need To Stop -- Now

She's back!

Makeup guru and vlogger Jackie Aina just posted her second annual look at makeup trends we need to ditch in the upcoming year. Last time, it was all about leaving behind Kylie Jenner-esque lip looks. For 2016, it's pretty much the same.

Although Aina again gets real about overdrawn lips, she skewers more current Instagram-trendy practices, too, such as "baking" foundation. She also gets down to the nitty gritty with other faux pas particular to the online makeup world, such as troll comments and unsolicited photos of -- you guessed it -- private parts

Of course, when it comes to personal preferences, it doesn't matter what other people think: It's your life, your face!

The video is based on comments from Aina's followers, made when she asked which trends they didn't want to see in 2016. So as you can imagine, she covers a lot of ground. We pulled out a couple of our favorite scenes, though you should definitely take in the full list in the video above

Aina pokes fun at "foundation baking," or putting powder over foundation and concealer to allow the cosmetics to set before blending it all together. While baking can be a part of anyone's routine, Aina wants it to be known: a lot of makeup is used here, and NO, Kim Kardashian did not invent it.

Speaking of blending, Aina brings up another trend we're definitely tired of seeing: extreme contouring. It's moved on from the face down to the décolletage.

Yes, contouring is a great method for makeup users, but how many times can we be expected to make a face from clown-like drawings? That's just not practical!

Finally, she points out that severe strobing, or highlighting, requires way too much effort and product.

LOL! Let's just agree to agree to keep the highlighter at bay a little more in 2016.

After watching the other hilarious points Aina makes in her video above, tell us: What trends do you want to ditch in the new year?

Prepping your Wardrobe for 2016 Trends

$

Now that it's officially winter and you've opened your holiday gifts (including those you cleverly gifted yourself!), it's a good time to take stock and think about your wardrobe in terms of the New Year ahead.

The spring/summer 2016 fashion season is abundant with inspiring options and it's not so much about grabbing a bit of everything, which will hit stores soon, but rather culling your closet for the key pieces that work and you continually love. From there, spot areas where you can add some fresh styles to spruce things up -- some of which you can get at affordable prices right now.

Let's be honest: for most of us there are some catwalk trends that we'd prefer to wear to bed rather than out and about... pajama sets anyone? So here's a quick trend-spotting list that should hit most of your needs: from every day running around to a summer party.

SHOW SOME SHOULDER
Beautiful, bare shoulders were the focus of numerous designers including Oscar de la Renta and The Row. Let your neck soar above the rest.

BIG ON BLOOMS
From your English garden variety to your prairie wildflower, floral prints tell a sweet story.

THE STAR: STRIPES
Stripes of every hue in graphically bold and even artistic presentations (imagine watercolor stripes by Chloé and stripes on patent by Tommy Hilfiger) are a standout. Don't forget a cool shoe.

JEAN DREAMS
Remember the denim-on-denim look we saw this past summer? Yup, still around. Alexander McQueen would say shred it up a bit and add some embroidery while Chanel suggests keeping it simple with a long dress.
2015-12-28-1451287380-4578121-ScreenShot20151228at1.56.32AM.png

THE BOMB
The jacket silhouette repeatedly showcased was a sporty version of the bomber, updated in fun patterns and bold colors: pair with relaxed athleisure separates.

RUFFLED ROMANTICS
Perfect for weddings and spring soirees, collections of ruffly, flowy dresses in soft creams and separates from the likes of Jason Wu and Chanel kept love in the air.

How to Break Up Gracefully

$
0
0
If the holiday pressure of your relationship is hitting home right now, you're not alone. As a dating coach, my phone has been ringing and the texts are flying back and forth the past week from people who are thinking of calling it quits in the love department.

At the holidays, it's common to be reflective. Singles and couples tend to reevaluate their relationship statuses before the year ends.

When your friends are changing their status to "In a Relationship" or "Engaged," which you will see flooding your Facebook feed, you'll either suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) or FOGO (Fear of Getting Out).

Now that I've filled you with acronyms that might hit a digital nerve, a New York Times article by Aimee Lee Ball lists a variety of apps that will help you dump your not-so-significant other.

Before you push the send button or ignore his or her texts, read these tips on how to end the relationship without a digital twist.

1. Be sure it's what you want to do. Once you start the ball rolling with the "I'm not feeling it any more" conversations, it's hard to take it back. I recommend making a list of what you like and don't like about your current steady sweetheart and see which column is longer. Seeing your deal-breakers in black and white takes the emotions out of a premature breakup.

2. Talk it over with one friend. Find your closest confidant and discuss your feelings with him or her before you do the deed. Show your friend your list and ask them if they think you're overreacting to his nail biting habit or her obsessiveness with texting during a date. Some things are deal-breakers. Others can be saved with a healthy conversation.

3. Ask permission to talk about your relationship. While you may be angsting that your relationship is on its way out, your significant other might things are going well. You know how to schedule a date. Now it's time to schedule a conversation when both of you are present and prepared to talk. Blurting out that you're not happy the day before his or her big presentation at work would be a huge mistake. Don't let your emotions get ahead of you.

4. Ask your partner to make a list. Let your significant other know what's on your list and start off by telling him or her what you like most about them and your relationship. Compliment them on the way they're a great parent, or admire how loyal and devoted they are to their careers. Let them know the things that have upset you about the relationship and then STOP and LISTEN.

5. Don't go "ghosting." While it's common and the easy way out to ghost or disappear by sending texts less frequently to eventually going MIA, it's not the right way to end a relationship. If you were comfortable enough to sleep with him or her, you should find it in your heart to be comfortable enough to have the convo. Don't pull a disappearing act.

6. If it's over, it's over. Lots of couples say they need a break, but let's face it, a break is often just a breakup waiting to happen. Going from being someone's steady squeeze to suddenly being one of three on their weekly date card won't make both people happy. Insecurity will emerge and both of you will wonder what the other is doing when they're not with you. While it's true that giving your partner space is healthy in a relationship, instead of smothering him or her, if the space is permission to paint the town red and post it on social media in the arms of another, it's going to go down badly.

7. Unplug from each others' social media accounts. In my blog on The Huffington Post, "It's Not Complicated: How to Handle a Breakup on Facebook," I wrote about the new Facebook tools, which allows you to see less of your former flame, by preventing his or her status updates and posts to appear in your feed and helps you easily untag yourself from photos of the two of you together. I suggest you read it and make the decision mutually as to whether you will unfriend each other on social media. Staring at his Instagram feeds and monitoring her check-ins will make you sick, online and IRL.

If you've invested time in a relationship with someone, remember to treat them the way that you'd want to be treated. Have the conversation in person and not via text. I know it's the easy way out, but some day you just might become friends with your ex, or even end up across the desk from them in a job interview or sales pitch. Always take the high road, even if you're feeling low.

Wishing you much love and joy in cyberspace, or wherever you may roam. xo

Show These Short Men's Hairstyles To Your Barber

The start of a new year is a great time to look ahead, so why not focus on the hair that's on yours?

Are you still dead-set on growing out a man bun? Still not using any hair products (and have frizzed-out 1980s Rambo-hair)? Still asking your barber for a "Caesar?" Please stop these things.

It's 2016 -- be a renaissance man and take some time to refine your hairstyle.

"Every guy should have a hair dryer."
Lorraine Carlin, creative director and head stylist at Truman's Gentlemen's Groomers

Here's a good argument for going short: Google analytics shows that people searched for short hairstyles, such as the Don Draper side-part, this year nearly as much as they searched for "how to grow a man bun."

So we asked Lorraine Carlin, the creative director and head stylist at Truman's Gentlemen's Groomers in New York City, about which short styles are trending and how to get them for ourselves.

"Some are more extreme and some can be more subtle," she said. It just depends on the shape of your face, what kind of hair you have, how much time you're willing to put into styling your hair every day (and what your workplace will let you get away with, of course).

Basically, are you willing to use a hairdryer? ("Every guy should have a hair dryer," Carlin said.)

"Talk to your stylist about all these things," she advised. "They should be able to tell you what you need to do to recreate their look."

To help get you started, here are Carlin's picks for the five hottest looks, along with how to ask your barber for it and how to style it yourself.

Hey Old Navy, There's Nothing Wrong With Aspiring To Be An Artist

Graphic tees may be fun and occasionally charming, but for retailers, they can lead down a pitfall-strewn path. This week, bargain retailer Old Navy faced social media backlash for stocking T-shirts for toddlers -- reportedly marketed toward little girls -- bearing the mottos "Young Aspiring Artist Astronaut" and "Young Aspiring Artist President."

On Twitter and Facebook, many customers and commentators expressed disappointment with the tees' message, which seems to imply that young kids shouldn't dream of becoming artists.

One parent, Kelly McKernan, noted that she herself is an artist: "As a mother and a career artist, I'm astounded that a company as large and influential as you are could approve of a design that encourages toddlers to stifle their creativity," she wrote on Facebook. "I'm horrified at the thought of putting a shirt like this on my own 20 month old daughter."

Typically, more irreverent chains such as Urban Outfitters or Abercrombie & Fitch have drawn public rage for casually racist, sexist or generally insensitive tees marketed toward teens and young adults.

As Mic's Theresa Avila pointed out, Old Navy seems to have been making a ham-handed attempt at female empowerment, creating shirts for little girls that suggest they could succeed in traditionally male-dominated professions by taking a jab at artists.

A glance through the retailer's graphic tees for toddlers suggests the company might have been thoughtlessly overcompensating. While Old Navy's boys' T-shirts generally sport slogans about adventure and smarts, the girls' selection mostly features gauzy clichés about family and free-spiritedness, and quasi-romantic sayings about love. A few of the boys' shirts: "Smart and Awesome Brother," "My Future Is Looking Bright," and "Today Is For Exploring." A few of the girls' shirts: "I Can't Even," "When I Dream of Happiness I Dream of You," and "Home Is Where the Heart Is." (Again, these are for toddlers.)

Old Navy has pulled the "Young Aspiring" tees from its site and announced that it is taking steps to remove them from stores after a wave of media coverage and social media outrage. In a statement to BuzzFeed, company spokeswoman Debbie Felix explained: "Our toddler tees come in a variety of designs including tees that feature ballerinas, unicorns, trucks and dinosaurs and include phrases like, 'Free Spirit.' They are meant to appeal to a wide range of aspirations."

Still, it's something of a mystery why Old Navy decided to pick on artists in this particular design. While becoming a working artist may be difficult, it's certainly not impossible -- by the numbers, aiming to become an astronaut or president is far more impractical. According to NASA's website, there are currently fewer than 50 working American astronauts, in addition to around 30 astronauts no longer eligible for flight duty. (For president, this should go without saying -- we can only have one every four years in the entire country.)

Meanwhile, graphic designers, illustrators, art teachers, cartoonists, animators, photographers and tattooists are all working visual artists, and that's just skimming the surface. The people who design Old Navy's shirts and act in their commercials power the company's business -- and they're artists! The numbers bear this out: In a survey spanning 2006-2010, the National Endowment for the Arts counted roughly 2 million working artists across the nation.

What's more, Old Navy targeted a demographic that's more than capable of fighting back. Clever redesigns of the shirt have already popped up on social media, like this forthright rebuke:

Other parodies have already popped up for sale, like this design on the Etsy shop Uncomfortable Yeti:

Perfect.

Uncomfortable Yeti's redesign might be the only one worth putting on a toddler: Whether you'd like your little girl to grow up to be an artist, an astronaut or a homemaker, the most important thing is to remember is that it's her life. Graphic tees that put our kids into tiny boxes before they have any idea what they really want are the problem, not the solution.

But remember, if your daughter grows up to be an artist, don't weep. Though artists are an easy punchline in a STEM-obsessed era, Old Navy's own reliance on creative professionals proves the arts are nothing to sneeze at, or cross out.

How To Remove Glitter Makeup Without Wrecking Your Skin

You may not have gone to Miley Cyrus-like extremes with your New Year's Eve makeup, and managed to ring in 2016 covered in glitter. The metallic eyeshadow that brightened up your orbs has crept down to your cheeks, and the shimmering nail art you painted on at the last minute is still holding on for dear life. (Signs of a rockin' good time, right?)

But how will you get the glitter off when you have to be at work (or meet up with family and friends)? Don't stress: We have simple tricks to wipe away all that shimmer from Make Up For Ever Pro Artist Lijha Stewart and celebrity manicurist Kimmie Kyees.

EYES, LIPS & BODY
Use a gentle eye makeup remover like Sens'Eyes to remove waterproof and highly-pigmented products without ending up with greasy residue. Be careful not to rub your eyes or lips aggressively -- it will cause more redness and can actually push glitter into the eyes and mouth.

Start by saturating a cotton pad with your makeup remover, place on top of the eye area and lips, then gently wipe off product in small circular motions. To remove any remaining glitter, wash your face using a foaming face wash and a warm wash cloth.

Instead of scrubbing with a face wipe, which can increase redness and irritation, try an oil-based makeup remover. This will emulsify all makeup and leave your skin soft.

NAILS
The best way to get glitter nail polish off is to use a cotton pad wet with pure acetone. Wipe the nail until the polish loosens, then dab the nail with the cotton and leave to soak. Continue on to the rest of the nails, changing cotton pads when necessary. When you return to the first nail you left "wet" with polish remover, the product would have broken down the glitter so that it is easy to wipe off.

To care for nails after the glitter is removed, use a soft buffer file to smooth and always apply cuticle oil to replenish the skin and nails from the acetone (as the formula can weaken and dehydrate nails over time).
