Still Time to Make Hair Part of Your New Year's Resolutions

0
0
If you haven't made time for your New Year's resolutions, there's still time. Don't forget your hair. Here are some ways to include your lovely locks in this annual ritual of positive change in our lives:

• Commit to climbing out of that hair rut! Your hair may be beautiful, but if you've had a single style for a long, long while (several years?), it's probably time for a change.

• Shake it up a bit! Now is a great time to get out of that box, try a new look. Take a chance. You'll probably look in the mirror and wonder, "Why didn't I do this a long time ago?"

• Get on a new regimen of hair care. Make it a resolution to take better care of your hair, or if you've been using the same products for a long time, see what's new. Maybe you've had a little too much fun with your hair, and it shows. Your hair is over-processed. Fall and winter months typically bring darker shades, which give your hair a rest from the harsh chemicals needed to get those bright light shades, but maybe you've been among those hanging on to summer blonde shades and your hair is due for some rehab. Consider a clarifying shampoo or mix of baking soda and water followed by a quality conditioner.

• Change, for its own sake, is important to experience. Maybe you think it will be too much trouble to change. Maybe you're apprehensive or even afraid. You'll be amazed at how you become comfortable with change and welcome it. Begin now.

• Hair grows back. No worries if you don't like what you did. And maybe that's one of the important lessons about change that you can learn with hair: you can change again.

Some style suggestions:

• Have you always been a blonde? Go darker. Always a dark brown? Try some highlights. On the conservative side but always flirted with being a red head? Take the leap.

• The scariest thing in the world can be to cut your hair short if you've had it long your entire life. Now's the time! Bobs are trending strong with huge style variety and this is a great way to refresh your look. Or maybe you're just going to go for it with a pixie. Bangs can be a great way to change your look without cutting a lot of hair off. Lots of people balk at bangs because the want their hair long enough to pull back, but you'd be surprised at how short you can go and still have a ponytail.

• Bangs can be a great way to change your look without cutting your hair off. A lot of people resist bangs because they want to be able to pull their hair back, but bangs are a great way to soften a look when your hair is pulled back and you don't want to lose length.

Happy New Year! Embrace change!

5 Things You Really Need To Know About Facials

0
0

Facials are one of the most misunderstood beauty rituals out there. Often seen as unnecessary or ineffective, the treatments are rarely thought of as part of a healthy skincare routine -- and they're pricey. But regularly seeing an aesthetician should be thought of as essential part of any glowing skin regimen.

To get all the facts, we asked Regine Berthelot, North America and Treatment Director of French skincare powerhouse Caudalíe, to put a few facial myths to bed. Check out Berthelot's tips below and consider making time for this indulgent extra step.

1. Facials are NOT fast fixes.

Facial treatments are a lot more preventative than they are curative. Think of visiting the spa like a trip to the dentist: "I always make the analogy that going to the dentist to clean your teeth is like your facial, whereas brushing your teeth at home is your home care maintenance." So just like you see the dentist for check-ups and plaque buildup removal, you should pencil in time with the aesthetician to keep your skin healthy and toxin-free.

2. You shouldn't be handing blackheads yourself.

Just like you should leave handling your cuticles to the professionals, you should also save extractions for your next appointment with the aesthetician. According to Berthelot, you must use a specific technique to remove a blackhead: "It must be pushed up from underneath. If it's not done properly, it can create an irritated surface."

Berthelot also emphasizes the importance of seeing a facialist to prevent blackhead buildup. If a blackhead is not completely removed, the idle dirt will build up and cause your pores to get bigger.

3. Facials are a mind game.

When asked about the pluses of getting a professional facial, Berthelot cited tricking the brain as a major benefit. Part of a good facial is an excellent massage: "The better the massage, the more blood circulation and draining effects for increased radiance." And a massage is more effective when done by someone other than yourself. "When you have someone else massaging your skin," Berthelot explains, "your brain is surprised and you enjoy the experience so much more. When you massage yourself, your brain already knows what you’re going to do, and there’s less of a 'wow' factor."

4. You see more benefits when you stick to a schedule.

Newsflash: You can train your skin. That's right, according to Berthelot, making time for a facial every 4 weeks or so can whip your complexion into shape: "When you receive facials regularly, it’s like training your skin. Skin cells like routines, and they will respond well to that."

Before making a crazy facial schedule, you need to consider your skin type. While Berthelot suggests getting a treatment every 4 weeks, you can go more or less often based on your skin's behavior. "Someone with oily skin can go every three weeks, and if you have dryer skin, you can go every five weeks."

5. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's good.

When choosing a facialist, it's important to trust your instincts: "I would always suggest going with your gut feeling. When you feel it’s right, you know. You should never feel like your esthetician is pushing products -- it should be a recommendation for your best interest."

A sign of a good treatment is also good skin. "If your skin is reacting well," Berthelot adds, "then that’s a great sign. You want to feel like your esthetician is an expert rather than feeling like you’re a number." In other words, you have every right to get up close and personal with your aesthetician.

Prince George's First Day Of School Photos Are Too Cute To Handle

Ever since the British royal family announced that Prince George would be starting nursery school at Norfolk's Westacre Montessori School this month, we've been anxiously waiting for that famous first-day-of-school photo to arrive.

Well, Kensington Palace just officially released not one, but two photos of Prince William and Kate's adorable firstborn, all set for his first day in a quilted coat and a big blue backpack.

The two super cute photos show two-year-old George outside the school, admiring a mural and smiling for the camera.

We can't help but have major flashbacks to Prince Williams' first day of preschool, though his son's seems to have involved much less fanfare.

And to be honest, we're pretty curious to know what's in that backpack.

Happy first day of school, George!

9 Classic Aromatherapy Oils And How They Change Your Mood And Body

0
0

If the words "aromatherapy" or "essential oils" evoke images of hippies dipped in fragrant oils surrounded by burning incense in the pursuit of inner peace and zen, then you're not alone.

But to get a more accurate definition of the mystifying practice, we turned to Guy Vincent, an aromatherapy expert and the head perfumer at Aveda. In a nutshell, aromatherapy is "the use of concentrated plant-derived aromatic oils for health and wellbeing," Vincent told The Huffington Post.

By simply smelling various essential oils (or a combination of them), our brains become stimulated and depending on the particular healing powers of the aromatic compound, we can experience a range emotions -- from calm to energized. These natural mood modifiers are what have inspired so many to not only try aromatherapy, but to use it on a regular basis

Vincent, who says he's "not a great sleeper," has found that a nightly routine of stretching, yoga and using the calming effects of lavender oil help him relax and eventually head to dreamland. He also mixes sprays made with grapefruit and vetiver oil to create a "welcoming and joyous" atmosphere in his home.

But harnessing the power of aromatherapy goes beyond mood or room-modifying oils, sprays and candles -- there are also beautifying benefits. For example, lavender not only helps to relieve stress but its antiseptic and antibacterial properties also fight mild acne. And rosemary oil will give a boost of energy as well as add volume and silky-ness to your hair

For optimal effectiveness, many essential oils can be applied directly to the skin or dabbed on the wrist, back of the neck and temples. And adding drops of the pure oils to your favorite beauty products is yet another brilliant use.

There are some serious upsides to sprinkling a bit of essential oil here and there, so we asked Vincent to tell us about some of the most popular aromatherapy oils and how they can help us improve our moods, minds and bodies. Check em' out below!

Meet Axel, Old Spice's Ridiculous New Whale-Riding Stuntman

Move over, Terry Crews and Isaiah Mustafa -- make room on the bench for Axel Kiener, a whale-taming, rocket-driving, land-speeding super athlete who lives by the freshly deodorized seat of his pants.

He's Richard Branson mixed with a young Super Dave Osborne -- a "global renaissance man who has more than his fair share of good looks and amazing stories of personal adventure and achievement," said Jason Bagley and Craig Allen, his creators at Wieden+Kennedy who lead the Old Spice team.

"We call him Axel because it sounds cool, and also because that's the actor's actual name," they said in an e-mail to The Huffington Post. "He has no permanent address. He has apartments and villas in all the cool cities, but he rarely uses them because he's usually in the guest house of some foreign dignitary or oil baron."

Launched just in time for Super Bowl commercial season, Axel exists to promote Old Spice's new line of body products, called its "Hardest Working Collection," a body wash, antiperspirant and deodorant the company claims is formulated to deliver "unparalleled performance for guys that demand more from their grooming products."

If the product doesn't work, Old Spice has dusted off its customer feedback line, 1-800-PROVE-IT, with a money-back guarantee and an over-the-top product pitchman named Bob Giovanni.

Will Axel be a superhero you can count on in the future? "We're not prepared to share if we can document Axel's upcoming dangerous and ill-advised adventures right now," Bagley and Allen said. But Old Spice ensures he'll join Giovanni, Isaiah Mustafa and Terry Crews, who will still represent Old Spice in future campaigns.

Here's the One Mascara Hack Makeup Artists Think You Should Know

0

If only applying mascara was as simple as swipe, swipe, swipe. Truth be told, there's an art to coating your lashes just right. (FYI: There's actually a perfect number of strokes that yields a perfect no-clump effect. Who knew?) While we apply it daily--and think we're experts in the stuff--there's a lot to learn about using a tube to its full capability. Here, 11 beauty experts share their best tips and tricks to step up your mascara game.

Plump your lashes. "Apply mascara, then pat pressed powder onto your lashes and add another coat of mascara. The powder acts as a thickener and keeps mascara in place." --Ramy Gafni, a makeup artist who has worked with Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Britney Spears

Avoid clumps. "Apply mascara with a flat-edged synthetic brush. Paint the mascara onto your bottom lashes for soft, luscious lashes without any clumping or smudging." --Viviana Martin, the director of global artistry and pro artist relations for Kevyn Aucoin

Use it as eyeliner in a pinch. "Your mascara can also double as a gel eyeliner. Use an eyeliner brush to apply a thin line of mascara on your top lid. If you have oily lids, use a waterproof formula." --Daniel Chinchilla, Ariana Grande's makeup artist

Cover grays. "Mascara can serve as a temporary cover for gray hairs on your head or around the hairline of the face. Pick a mascara color that mostly matches your hair, and wipe it the length of the gray hair to make the gray disappear until you shampoo." --Matthew Waitesmith, the founder of Artis Makeup Brushes

Solve a fashion crisis. "Behind the scenes in a fashion emergency, I've used a stroke of mascara on leather bags or shoes to cover scratches. And save your mascara wands! They are the best lash and brow combs on the planet. Between coats, nothing works better to put rogue brow hairs and lashes in their place." --BJ Gillian, a makeup artist and the creative director of Ready to Wear

Related: The 10 Best Drugstore Mascaras Under $20

Keep your shadow pristine. "When you apply mascara, you sometimes make a blunder and get those lash marks on the shadow you worked so hard to blend. Don't fret. Once the mascara dries, take a dry spooley brush and sweep the marks away without ruining your shadow!" --Marina Gravani, Mariah Carey's makeup artist

Revive the formula. "Have a mascara that's drying out? Put a couple drops of saline solution--the kind you use for contacts--into your mascara and swirl around with the brush. This will give your mascara a second life." --Brandie Hopstein, a makeup artist who works with Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow

Enhance brows. "I usually like to use a dark-brown or a black-brown mascara for this. Clean as much as you can off of the wand so you can apply the product lightly without any clumps. Comb through your eyebrows lightly with the remaining mascara on the wand and voilà, filled-in brows. If there are any smudges outside your brow area, just clean the area with a Q-tip and some Bioderma, so it's nice and neat." --makeup artist Robert Greene

DIY a new shade. "Create your own fun mascara shades by mixing loose pigments and clear mascara. I love making metallic mascara using this method--it is an unexpected bit of sparkle." --Lori Leib, a makeup artist and the reative director of Bodyography Cosmetics

Brighten your eye color. "I apply one coat of blue mascara first, then apply black on top but leave about a quarter of the lash blue at the lash line. This way you get the pop of color close to your eyes, which will draw focus to them and intensify the color, but you still get the look of black lashes." --Paige Padgett, a makeup artist who works with Jillian Michaels

Eliminate mess. "Use an old (clean) gift card for mess-free application. Hold the card behind your lashes at the roots, apply your mascara, root to tip, pressing into the card. This is especially great if you like to apply your shadow and foundation before mascara." --Lindsay Ellingson, a cofounder and the creative director of Wander Beauty

Pizza Hut's New 'Hut Swag' Lets You Wear Your Obsession On Your Sleeve

0
0

Pizza Hut launched a fashion line in December, which sadly means that it's too late to give the gift of Hut for Christmas.

But there's always Valentine's Day, right?

Named Hut Swag, the clothing and accessories got a pie in the face from Adweek.

"Given that they can barely handle making the thing they're named after, it seems a little presumptuous for Pizza Hut to sell branded clothing," the trade publication wrote Wednesday. "But they're doing it anyway."

The promotional video above skews young and presumably hip. That, however, is for the viewer to decide.

The line includes shirts ...

 scarves ...

and hats ...

If that's not enough, how about a $34.99 hoodie that reads, "Pizza is BAE" ?

They're stayin' cheesy, all right.

11 Times Politicians Dressed Worse Than Marco Rubio (And Those BOOTS)

0
0

Hey, step off Marco Rubio's boots.

After New York Times reporter Michael Barbaro noticed the senator's footwear and tweeted an appreciative photo, pundits and rivals jumped at the chance to knock the boots, which are technically (and appropriately for Rubio) known as Cuban heels.

New York Magazine's The Cut called them "high-heeled booties," "Morning Joe" hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski called them "shagalicious," straight out of Austin Powers, and Rand Paul said they're cute.

Politics aside, not only do we think they look great -- a pair of Florsheims, Politico reports -- but Rubio's boots are unfortunate reminders that pundits, campaign directors and Twitter's opinion-sharers aren't accustomed to politicians actually looking stylish, or men taking fashion risks at all, for that matter (these boots are mild, as far as risks go).

And compared to other politicians' fashion, um, missteps (never forget Al Gore and Bill Clinton's joggers), Rubio definitely wore his better.

To put things into perspective, here are 11 times politicians made way worse faux pas than Rubio's boots.

Why Is Your Boyfriend More Faithful to His Barber Than He Is to You?

0
0
Good barbers are hard to come by, so it comes to no surprise that guys hate (absolutely hate) to deviate from their barbers. In the weirdest way, and most guys will tell you, it feels like you've cheated. Interestingly enough, a lot of guys don't feel this way when they've stepped out on their partner.

Discussing this with some of my classmates, and one of them said, "To be honest. I feel worse when I go to another barber than when I [cheat on my girlfriend]."

So why is it that your boyfriend is more faithful to his barber than you?

1. Well first, there is a understanding of monogamy between a guy and his barber.
In a sense, there is an understanding that your barber... is your barber. And you as the client, are his/her client. When you start regularly going to a barber- you know when the "testing-you-out-to-see-if-my-hairline-is-straight-and-my-fade-is-actually-blended-and-not-blockie" stage is complete- barber culture provides that you stick with that person. You dare not go in the shop and sit in someone else's chair. Not even if your barber has seven people.

But for some reason, this understanding doesn't exist in the same manner for intimate relationships. So maybe the reason why is because culture no longer dictates monogamy as a requirement of intimate relationships.

2. Your barber is a confidant and advisor.
You'd be surprised by how much information guys tell their barbers. Rather it be about sports, family, clubs, cars, sex, cheating, considerations of marriage, family reunions... the list is infinite. Your barber is a trustworthy listening ear. And almost all barbers can't resist the urge to give advice on how, why, or when you should do something. And we respect their opinions because...

3. ...your barber is there with you through the good and bad.
Think about it: the reason barbers get so much information from us is because we typically have to see them before any MAJOR thing happens in our lives. You have a job interview coming up? Have to get a haircut. Thinking about proposing? Have to get a haircut. Someone in your family died? Have to get a haircut. Your friends are in town? Have to get a haircut. Graduating from college? Have to get a haircut... Our barbers are the people we can count on to be there. They are one of the few constants in a person's life. So the question becomes, how do you make yourself more of a constant and less of a variable?

4. Your barber makes you feel like a new person.
When you leave the barbershop, you feel- and often look- like a new person. And that does a lot for your confidence. You instantly become ready to take over the world. And that is how relationships are suppose to be. Being with someone is supposed to make you feel like a new, better, more able person. Does your boyfriend feel this way about being with you?

5. Good barbers are (practically) irreplaceable.
Ok, so everyone is replaceable in a sense. But generally, a good barber is irreplaceable. When you find someone who cuts your hair the right way, you don't deviate because you know you aren't going to find that cut in the hands of another barber. And let's say you try someone new. Chances are the cut doesn't meet your expectations and you can't wait for a week or two to go by so you can go BACK to your barber. They have something that other barbers just don't have. But do you have something that your boyfriend just won't find somewhere else?

Well, there you have it folks. Five reasons why your boyfriend may be more faithful to his barber than you. But this in no way is intended to be an article to tell anyone what they should do to prevent their boyfriends from cheating. For monogamous relationships, cheating is unacceptable. If you don't want to be with someone, you probably shouldn't be with them. But it is supposed to be an interesting parallel to understand the different elements that sustains a person's desire to remain committed and faithful.

Model Ashley Graham stars in Forever 21's campaign for the brand's new plus-size activewear collection. Clad in a matching sports bra and pant combination, Graham looks great (per usual), proving that anyone of any size can rock the athletic aesthetic.

Model Denise Bidot makes an appearance on the site, modeling various styles in the line.

The collection is designed for different types of workouts, like yoga and cycling, and appeals to various levels of intensity. In addition to Graham's cute outfit, the line also includes more sports bras, leggings, tops and hoodies.

Oh, and of course, the items work well with an athleisure vibe. Just think of all the ways you could style the mesh number below!

Claps to Graham for landing this shoot -- it's definitely a chic start to her (and our) year!

Kendall Jenner Is The Spitting Image Of Mom Kris In This Wacky New Shoot

Kendall Jenner rang in 2016 with a bang -- in the form of a cover shoot and huge spread in Vogue Brasil's January issue, of course.

The 20-year-old looks fresh-faced and natural for the cover, but inside the mag there's a whole other story. The spread, shot by legendary photographer Russell James, features Jenner in a slew of wacky looks and props including a crown, a mask and some truly enviable sunnies.

The clothes and headgear are the stuff our Sir Elton John dreams are made of. But with the short hair, Kendall looks an awful lot like mama Kris Jenner and her signature 'do.

Sorry, Khloe. Looks like Kendall just stole the crown for queen of the fam.

From Public Housing to Thriving Entrepreneur, Boston Hairstylist Gives Free 'Makeover Mondays'

Shellee Mendes is living proof that hard work does pay.

The Boston based hairstylist went from living in a public housing development in the Roslindale section of Boston, to being the only female African-American owner of a hair salon on Newbury Street, an upscale part of the city similar to 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

Mendes, also a mother, has to balance taking care of herself, her family, and her business--Salon Monet. Inspired by her earlier life struggles, she spends every Monday approaching people presenting this request with the flash of her radiant smile: "Hi, I'm Shellee from Salon Monet and today is Makeover Monday. I am choosing you for a fab makeover, would you be willing to let me highlight your beauty today?"

Mendes hasn't forgotten where she came from. Almost 21 years ago, she was living in an apartment that was provided to her by a shelter that houses homeless or financially struggling women. She worked two jobs while taking care of her children and going to school to get her stylist's license. As the owner of a full service hair salon, Mendes uses her passion to make someone's day a bit better.

I volunteered for a makeover to experience the service for myself. I also spoke to Mendes about how she got started and what inspired her begin the kind gesture.

Beyond Classically Beautiful: Who is Shellee Mendes?

Shellee Mendes: I own a full service hair salon, and we also do eyelashes and makeovers. I've gotten several awards including best hair extensions, best salon for ethnic hair and a few more other awards throughout the year. I've been doing this for about 18 years and I actually love what I do to this day.

BCB: What motivated you to open Salon Monet?

SM: I used to work in the corporate world and I loved my job at John Hancock. It paid the bills, I had great benefits. It was great when my kids were small. But at the same time I always had a passion to do hair and that's what I would do on the side.

I decided to get serious with it and I went to school, [and got] certified. I started working in the salons on Newbury. I jumped right in, came straight to Newbury Street. It wasn't even like work.

Me getting ready to be transformed

BCB: Talk about Makeover Mondays. How did that begin?

SM: A lot of times Sundays and Mondays most salons are closed. However, my salon is open on that day and I found myself doing a lot of color corrections and extensions on Sundays and Mondays. So I decided to do Makeover Mondays because that's what we were doing a lot of.

Sometimes we're a little too busy, but for the most part we transform people in the biggest way and I love doing that. We'll change their hair, get them hair. We'll change their entire appearance, bring them into our eye boutique, throw a little makeup on and transform them.

BCB: And the entire service is free? What are people's reactions?

SM: Yes, it's free. Most of the time they'll look me up and down and say "hmm...do I want to trust this girl with my hair and appearance." Most of them will look at me and say no or they don't have time and ask if they can book it at a different time. I say no because it has to happen right then and there. What I do is bring them upstairs and have them sign a consent form and I'll do a consultation with them first.

BCB: Can you go over my makeover and how much it would cost?

SM: What we're doing with your hair is a wash, style, and deep condition. I'm actually cleaning up your ends as well. I'm giving you a treatment on top for your own hair and that's usually $200 for everything. The eyelashes that we're going to do on you is usually around $200 to $300 depending on the type of lashes you do. So we're giving you almost a $500 package today.

Before and after my Makeover Monday experience

BCB: You've been a business woman for the last 14 years. Where do you see yourself in the next 14 years?

SM: The next 14 years I plan on expanding, and I'm looking at different locations in Boston. I will always be on Newbury Street, but I am looking to open another one somewhere in Boston.

Here's What Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady Eat -- Yes, It's Ridiculously Strict

No coffee, dairy, white sugar, tomatoes...

The private chef that cooks for Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady recently shared exactly what the duo -- and their kids -- eat and don't eat. The list is fascinating, as you might expect.

The guy behind their meals: Allen Campbell

His philosophy:
"I make conscious decisions to buy local and organic, and to stay away from GMOs, and to think about the future of the planet and the future of humans," he tells the Boston Globe. "My philosophy is that a plant-based diet has the power to reverse and prevent disease." Another choice quote from Campbell that might help explain a few things: "Sugar is the death of people." (Noted, but... one cookie isn't going to kill anyone.)

The food: Here's where things get complicated. This diet is exceptionally strict and extremely personalized for Gisele and Tom's careers, goals, and performance needs -- it's not meant to be a sweeping generalization of what you should and shouldn't consume. That being said...

Campbell tells the Boston Globe that their diet is 80 percent vegetables. Organic vegetables to be specific, but not nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, and eggplants because "they're not anti-inflammatory."

The other 20 percent is made up of lean meats including chicken and grass-fed organic steak. They also eat wild salmon, too.

The list of what they don't eat is extensive: white sugar, white flour, MSG, coffee, caffeine, fungus, dairy, and fruit. Campbell notes that the kids do eat fruit but Tom prefers to avoid the category besides having a banana in his smoothie.

To prepare the food Campbell cooks only with coconut oil and uses "Himalayan pink salt as the sodium."

The menu: Despite the long "do not" list, the menu sounds like it has the potential of being delicious -- especially when you have someone else shop, prep, and cook it for you. Campbell says he's a fan of serving bowl-based meals, and recently served the family a quinoa dish with wilted greens, topped with toasted almonds, a cashew sauce with lime curry, lemongrass, and a little bit of ginger.

The takeaway: This diet isn't for everyone, and it's not meant to be -- most people aren't supermodels or NFL quarterbacks for a living, after all. But it is weirdly comforting to know that in addition to their workouts and exceptionally amazing genes, Gisele and Tom are also really strict about what they eat. Meaning, they put in a LOT of work to look and perform the way they do. And while I can appreciate their dedication, I'm going to keep enjoying my coffee... and cupcakes.
