Make-Up Mind Control

$
0
0
As I've said over a million times: I like makeup and clothes, and I like thinking. I don't believe the two are mutually exclusive. In fact, quite often a lot of my thinking is about both the infinitesimally small ("Which lipstick should I wear?") and infinitesimally large ("Why do we all do this?") questions about makeup and clothes. And the more I over-analyze and over-intellectualize my relationship with said clothes and makeup, the more pertinent a certain question becomes to me: Why do I like things, and why do I not?

I see my personal tastes as often made up of the ugly, the challenging and the stupid. I like contrasts: very girly things with very masculine things, very modern things with very classic things. I like sack shaped dresses and heavy shoes and bushy eyebrows. These aren't typically "pretty" ... yet they do fit a certain aesthetic that isn't totally unacceptable in modern society. As Tyra Banks so wisely puts it, I like the "ugly-pretty." This is an intellectual interpretation of prettiness: if you don't find my shapeless clothes and lack of discernible makeup attractive, then clearly you don't understand.

For example, like most people going through a crisis, I have recently decided on a drastic hair change: to go light, ashy blonde. The hair I'm aiming for is almost colorless: not white, not gray and CERTAINLY not yellow. It doesn't flatter my skin tone, it doesn't match my eyebrows. It objectively probably looks worse than it did before. But that's fine, guys. I didn't do it to be pretty, or to look nice.

But this type of ugly, grandma-esque hair is something lots of people aspire to. It wasn't an original idea; I am not pioneering this "trend." I may not be trying to look more conventionally attractive, but I am doing it to look more a certain way. Would I have done it if literally everyone hated it -- if it was a totally "unacceptable" way to look?

We've all established that the primary reasons that girls do the aesthetic things they do has little or nothing to do with boys. It's about other girls, for the most part. We want other girls to think we're pretty and cool and have good taste in eye shadow. In fact, a boy once told me that the most sexy makeup look on a girl is no makeup at all, because of the "naked" connotations of a bare face. But finding a pure motive for doing the aesthetic things we do seems almost impossible. The waters are too muddied. If you're told to like something often enough, or by someone you like (or find aspirational), at some point you're bound to give in and start liking it.

It's worrying to think of female taste being a process of mind control, either to keep women insecure or to keep them spending. But it's boring to wonder every time you decide to like something whether you really like it, or if it's a product of your systematic hypnotism by patriarchal society. What's the answer? Well, as always, I don't know. But I guess my message is thus: at least be cognizant of the question of why you like or dislike things. And if you think you like something, but it's constantly making you feel bad, remember that you're free to not like it. Nothing is an obligation and everything in your world of "personal aesthetics" should be positive. And if it is, I reckon that's just fine.

16 Ways To Hit The Refresh Button In The New Year

$
0
0

After a jolly season of turkey dinners, holiday parties, Champagne cocktails and more social obligations than you can even remember, it's natural to want to pause and hit the refresh button in the new year.

That doesn't mean making a new year's resolution to lose weight. Instead, there are tons of other ways to actually restart your mind and body this month. It's not only about picking up healthy new behaviors, but also considering some unhealthy habits you might want to let go of.

Here are 16 ways to hit the refresh button in 2016.

1. Reset your problem-solving: Take a walk.

The basic act of going on a walk can bring so many positive benefits to your life. Getting outside and walking increases your brain function and is linked to improvement in mood and reduced cancer risk and is a great way to boost your overall heart health. It might even protect against dementia and add years to your life.

But taking a walk can also serve as a "reset" and help you solve a problem you're struggling with. Walking is often where people do their best thinking, and it's a good catalyst for brainstorming. Something bothering you? Take a quick walk to get some perspective.

2. Reset your anxious thoughts: Learn to meditate.

With each passing year, the list of meditation benefits grows longer and longer. Expect better mood, better sleep, and a stronger immune system as well as lower blood pressure and stress levels (traffic? No biggie). A daily meditation practice is like a restart for your mind -- almost like wipers on a rainy car window -- and you feel refreshed and ready to face the day each time you practice. Even five minutes a day can make a world of difference.

There are many misconceptions about meditation and it can be daunting trying to figure out how to get started, so we made you a guide.

3. Reset your vices: Cut out something for one week.

This isn't about losing weight. Cutting out a substance that's been overused in the last few weeks -- like sugar, caffeine, or alcohol -- can be a great refresher for your body. There's no need to cut something out for a whole month; try limiting that substance for just seven days. The intention alone might change your future behavior: A recent study showed that those who even attempted to stop drinking for a month reported a decrease in alcohol consumption over the following six months.

4. Reset your diet: Focus on adding one thing in.

Instead of obsessing over trying to cut out bad foods from your diet, focus on one thing you'd like to incorporate more. For example, flaxseed oil is great for your health and is rich in omega 3s.

5. Reset your to-do list: Write it all down.

This time of year, many people feel stressed with the sheer number of tasks at hand. Returning holiday gifts, doing a big grocery store run and other bothersome errands -- plus regular work tasks -- are enough to make us all feel bogged down. One quick way to refresh your brain is to make a list.

The act of writing down everything you need to do can help quiet your mind and make things feel more organized before you've even done a thing. No need to complete all of the things on the list this week or even next week. Just get them all down on paper and out of your head as a first step.

6. Reset your mood: Do something that makes you laugh.

No joke -- laughter improves our health and boosts happiness. The simple act of laughing has been proven to boost our mood and our immune system as well as relieve pain and lower stress. We usually feel refreshed after laughing -- it's why we so often let out that long sigh after a good laugh. Make an effort to see friends who make you giggle or watch a Netflix comedy instead of a drama this month. Your mind and body will feel lighter.

7. Reset your relationships: Make plans with an old friend.

We are all guilty of losing touch. Genuine catch-up time with friends can spread to weeks, months and sometimes even years. It's easy to let an email sit in your inbox as you whiz right past it, thinking, "I'll respond when I have more time."

Reconnecting with a friend can invigorate your mood and bring a nice sense of calm. Pick one friend to reach out to and schedule a time to get together, talk on the phone or connect over FaceTime -- a great option because it feels more like an in-person visit.

8. Reset your schedule: Make time for the "fun stuff."

Know the difference between doing something you enjoy versus doing something productive. These are not the same things. Physically block off some free time for the fun stuff in your calendar or else the productive stuff will always bully its way in. Want to binge-watch a show? Great. Dying to sip some wine and listen to an album start to finish? Go you. Setting aside time for things that make you feel good might bring about more balance and joy in your life.

9. Reset your happiness: Start a gratitude journal.

The benefits of cultivating gratitude are plentiful -- it can open up more relationships, enhance empathy, increase self-esteem and can even improve your physical and psychological health. In other words: shifting your focus to the positive can dramatically improve your happiness. But the key is consistency.

For example, try out a five-minute gratitude journal. Answer the quick questions first thing in the morning or right before bed and notice your mood shift this month.

10. Reset your creativity: Try a dream journal.

If you have trouble remembering your dreams, or are interested in examining them in a deeper way, try jotting a few things down the moment you wake up. Over time, you might notice your recall improving and you may also find that you feel more creative during the day. Writing is therapeutic; studies have shown that journaling can increase emotional health and you might just learn a little bit more about yourself.

11. Reset your productivity: Vow to organize just one thing.

This can be a kitchen cabinet, a single drawer, the trunk of your car, your computer desktop, or that devilish Gmail inbox. Crossing one of these things off your list can go a long way in decreasing stress and increasing your feelings of productivity.

12. Reset your imagination: Give up on that book you’ve been lumbering through.

It’s okay to bow out of something if you’re not loving it. More than halfway through a book? Who cares. Find a great new book to start instead -- and never look back. Life is short. Be specific with where you put your energy.

13. Reset your conscience: Apologize to someone.

Apologize for something big or small. Like missing a birthday party, forgetting to call someone back or for being generally out of touch. Clear the slate and start fresh. That nagging voice in the back of your head will quiet down.

14. Reset your sense of wonder: Book that vacation you've been dreaming about.

This doesn't have to be the biggest trip of your life if you're feeling strapped for cash post-holidays. But pick a place you've been talking or thinking about for a while and make it happen, even if it's 10 months from now. Having something to look forward to can serve as a major mood boost and refresh your outlook on work or daily tasks.

15. Reset your energy: Go to sleep earlier.

That movie, podcast or television show will certainly be there for you tomorrow. Sleep is one of the very best ways to give your overall health a powerful reboot. An extra hour of sleep can be the difference between a cranky morning and a calm one. Your mood, hunger and stress levels all improve with proper sleep. We're talking 7-plus hours, people. Guaranteed freshness.

16. Reset your technology addiction: Power down 30 minutes before bed.

Try to get off your screens at least 30 minutes before you get in bed. Spend that time winding down, reading a book, sipping a cup of tea or even getting stuff ready for the next day. Pack your lunch, fold some clothes or tidy up around the house. This gives your eyes a break from your screen and cues your brain that it's time to settle in.

Dakota Johnson Makes Hilarious Save After Leslie Mann Accidentally Unzips Her Dress At The People's Choice Awards

Actress Dakota Johnson made a pretty dramatic impression at the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday night.

While accepting the awards for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress, the 26-year-old hugged presenters Leslie Mann and Alison Brie (who star with Johnson in the upcoming movie, "How to Be Single"). During the hug with Mann, it appeared she accidentally unzipped Johnson's dress.

"Leslie just broke my dress," said Johnson, as she held her dress behind her back and made her way to the microphone. "Well -- it's not like nobody here hasn't already seen my boobs."

Johnson is, of course, referencing her nude scenes from the steamy movie, "Fifty Shades of Grey."

Watch the moment unfold -- er, unzip -- below:

Despite the drawbacks that came with the racy role as Anastasia Steele in "Fifty Shades," Johnson recently told British Vogue that she is "proud" of the film.

"I'm proud of 'Fifty Shades of Grey.' I don't need to distance myself from that," said Johnson to the publication. "The more work I do, the more the general public sees the different things I can do. Do I think it opened doors? Yeah. More people know my name."

Watch out for Johnson when she reprises her role as Steele in the "Fifty Shades" sequel due in theaters Feb. 10, 2017.

Target's Collaboration With Soulcycle Is Its Most Unexpected Partnership Yet

$

This surprising collaboration sure has got a lot of soul.

Target announced Thursday that for its latest collaboration, the retailer is not partnering with yet another coveted fashion designer -- instead, it's working with cult-followed fitness empire Soulcycle.

The two mega-brands have paired up to offer shoppers free pop-up fitness cycling classes (usually $34) in ten cities -- Houston, Seattle, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Denver, Nashville, Miami, Chicago, Minneapolis and Los Angeles --between Jan. 22 and Feb. 14, as well as a pop-up shop dedicated to wellness products in the participating stores.

SoulCycle will also release a small capsule collection of mostly unisex clothing in Target stores, including a sweatshirt ($49), sweatpants ($49), tank top ($29) and men's T-shirt ($29) -- all kind of a bargain considering similar styles currently sold on Soulcycle's website cost double those prices. So even if the pop-up doesn't come to your city (or you hate spinning), you can still act as if.

Any devoted follower of Target's designer collaborations will be surprised to hear about this latest venture. Soulcycle is arguably the most fashionable fitness routine there is, though, so in a way, it makes total sense. The indoor cycling empire, which boasts 45-minute, high-energy classes incorporating weights and core work, opened its first studio 2006 and has since spread to major cities all over the country, earning a seal of approval from fashion elites and celebrities alike.

Classes will be open to the public but with limited space, so hurry over to Target to learn how to sign up.

Depotting Is A Makeup Hack That'll Save You Lots Of Money

$
0
0

There's a running joke among the Style editors here at HuffPost about who has the heaviest handbag. It's easy to blame our back-breaking loads on iPhones, magazines or heels. But when we dump the contents of our purses out in search of gum, those aren't the only things weighing us down ... it's our makeup. So we think it's time to try the space-, time- and money-saving beauty hack that the pros swear by known as "depotting."

Depotting is the practice of removing a makeup product, such as eyeshadow, blush or lipstick, from its original container and placing it into more practical packaging. Without its original packaging, the existing makeup is usually left in round or square-shaped metal pans.

"Most professional makeup artists find themselves lugging around a heavy makeup kit from set to set,"says Zena Shteysel, the head makeup artist for "Dancing With the Stars" and creator of Z Palette. "In theater, film and TV, makeup artists needed an efficient way to have everything in one place and ready for touch-ups. Depotting makeup pans out of their bulky packaging and into one palette was the answer."

"Depotted products are simple and stripped down, and it enables consumers to combine all their favorite makeup brands into one easy-to-carry container," adds UNII Cosmetics founder Minna Ha.

You don't need to be a professional makeup artist to benefit from depotting, according to Shteysel. "I don't know a woman out there who wouldn't love a little extra space on her counters or time in the morning. Depotting your makeup and getting it out of those clunky compacts also allows you to see all the products and shades that you have. I always say, the best thing about makeup you can see, is that you'll actually use it," she says.

Using custom magnetic palettes can also save consumers money when they purchase refills instead of the standard product. Ha breaks it down: "There is a $3 differential between the MAC eyeshadow and the MAC eyeshadow refill. For consumers who purchase multiple products a year, the savings will begin to add up!"

The technique typically involves applying a form of heat to the bottom of the packaging (as demonstrated in the tutorial video above) to help the product come out. "Traditionally, most depotting was done in the oven or on a flat iron, whereby low heat was used to gently melt the glue holding the makeup pan in the packaging, so that you could then carefully lift it out," explains Shteysel.

However, the ease of depotting may depend on the brand. Ha says, "Some products will pop right out of their packaging, while others are very stubborn and require a more careful approach."

"Pressed powder type products like eyeshadows and blushes depot best because they are contained in a separate pan than the outer pack," says beauty industry executive and artist Jenn Karsten. "Lipsticks also work well because they tend to be stable with few active ingredients that might react to a foreign plastic or metal palette."

Yet Karsten cautions against depotting foundations and concealers unless they come in the same type of plastic packaging. These products have very active ingredients and are in the pack or bottle they are in for stability reasons. Volatile silicone-based products can have a bad reaction to plastic. Shteysel also strongly discourages against repackaging lip glosses and mascaras.

A few other depotting dos and don'ts:

Do decide on a method most suitable for you. "Do look up tutorials if you are trying this for the first time," says Ha. "There are many instructional videos available on the subject. YouTube features many depotting tutorials, as well as repair videos in case you have a mishap. If you don't have access to adequate ventilation (for example, you live in a crowded dorm room), do not use the candle method."

Don't start with brand new makeup. Ha recommends practicing with colors that you don't like until you're comfortable with the process.

Do invest in high-quality palettes and tools to protect your efforts and product. "Be aware that cosmetics have a limited shelf life," says Karsten. "So when you mess with them, you are exposing them to non-tested conditions and foreign packaging that could alter the performance or quality." Shteysel believes a thin, flexible metal spatula is also a depotter's best friend. "It's going to let you get right in between the pan and the plastic packaging so that you can wiggle your makeup right out," she says.

Don’t rush the process. Never use dirty hands, towels or spatulas to depot. "This practice isn't risk-free as products can break or change," Karsten adds.

Amandla's Teen Vogue Cover Story By Solange Is As Epic As It Sounds

$

Amandla Stenberg is featured on the February cover of Teen Vogue!

The powerful cover story on Stenberg, written by fashion and music guru Solange Knowles, will undoubtedly make your heart sing.

Solange's powerfully-crafted piece celebrates the young phenom -- who has consistently advocated on behalf of her black identity -- in the most heartfelt way.

Her opening words ring with honesty and admiration for Stenberg, who she said is "sprinkling black girl magic in every crevice of the universe" -- and encouraging others to do the same:

Here we are, connecting as two nonconforming black girls. Connecting as two trailblazers who recognize the borders that have been built around us as we steadily tear them down, dancing through life while coloring outside every line. Connecting as two lovers of music, art, and the color orange. Connecting as two chicks who are over talking about our hair -- although we know it’s badass! Connecting as two descendants of powerful queens who made the journey before us and whom we hold in the highest regard. I may not have prepared, but I sure as hell felt inspired by our honesty with each other and ready to take on the world -- sprinkling black girl magic in every crevice of the universe."

In the wide-ranging interview, Stenberg and Solange discuss the politics of hair, cultural appropriation, girl power and being black in a world where all of these things are continuously being redefined.

“I think that as a black girl you grow up internalizing all these messages that say you shouldn’t accept your hair or your skin tone or your natural features, or that you shouldn’t have a voice, or that you aren’t smart,” Stenberg said. “I feel like the only way to fight that is to just be yourself on the most genuine level and to connect with other black girls who are awakening and realizing that they’ve been trying to conform.”

Stenberg opens up about being called racial slurs when she was cast as Rue in "The Hunger Games" in one powerful portion of the interview -- and how that experience, in turn, made her more in tune with her blackness.

"People called me the N-word and said that the death of my character, Rue, would be less sad because I was black," Stenberg said.

"That was the first moment I realized being black was such a crucial part of my identity in terms of the way that I was perceived and how it would affect any line of work that I wanted to pursue," she added.

These two ladies coming together for this wonderful interview just shows what happens when women such as Stenberg and Solange fully embrace all their black girl magic and share it with the world -- and we hope to see much, much more of this in the new year!

Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell And Claudia Schiffer Wow In New Balmain Campaign

The words "epic" and "legendary" are thrown around a lot in the world of fashion, but they have never felt more appropriate than after laying eyes on the new Balmain Spring/Summer 2016 campaign

Supermodel icons Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer have joined the #BalmainArmy and our fashion-loving hearts are exploding.

The striking black-and-white images were captured by famed photographer Steven Klein and mark a "new chapter for Balmain," Olivier Rousteing, Balmain's creative director, told Vogue.com

Since taking the reins in 2011, Rousteing has tapped into the Generation Y audience by featuring ads with Rihanna, Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, as well as sister acts Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Gigi and Bella Hadid. So turning to this trio of '90s starlets is quite the departure, but one that is personal for Rousteing.

"This campaign is about what makes me love fashion, and these three women are exactly that. These three women are what made me love fashion yesterday, make me love fashion today, and are going to make me love fashion in the future," Rousteing explained.

And if there was any doubt if these ladies have still got it -- just feast your eyes on more of the campaign images below (some of which may be NSFW). Epic!

This 8-Year-Old Boy's Very Special Dream Just Came True

An 8-year-old boy named Ethan realized one of his dreams this week when a MAC cosmetics artist taught him the art of drag makeup.

Florida makeup artist Joey Killmeyer has worked in the makeup industry for the better part of 15 years, having honed his skill-set in the likes of the Miss America pageant. When Ethan and his mother walked into the MAC store, he told Killmeyer that he wanted to learn how to do makeup like he had seen on the Internet through various YouTube videos, such as Jeffree Star's makeup tutorials.

"When Ethan and his mom, Season, came into the store, I felt an immediate connection," Killmeyer told The Huffington Post. "He reminded me of myself at that age. It touched my heart that I was able to help him learn what he wanted to know."

Ethan's mom, Season Wilwert, told The Huffington Post that she hoped her openness with her son's creative desires would inspire other parents to embrace the unique qualities of their own children.

"Children need to be loved unconditionally, nurtured and encouraged to discover themselves through their true talents and passions," she said. "By doing so, and receiving the necessary support from parents, they are building confidence and security in who they are. We as parents should be our child's biggest cheerleader."

Killmeyer told The Huffington Post that he painted half of Ethan's face, and then Ethan replicated the steps on the other side. "I was so touched by his mom and that she was allowing him to do this," he said. "He also wants to learn to do makeup on others. He thought learning to do makeup on himself that it may be easier to do on others... It is about being creative, having fun and being yourself. And that is what Ethan's mom is letting him do."

Ethan's mom told The Huffington Post that she hopes people will break out of their binary thinking when it comes to gender, and instead see gender expression as a spectrum.

"Society needs to steer away from what is typically known as the gender roles and stereotypes and accept the fact that it's OK for a boy to wear makeup to express himself as an artist," the mom said. "This does not define his gender identity nor his sexual preference. He's just exploring and being a kid! Being judgmental and close-minded on such issues not only is hurtful to our children, but it also inhibits their freedom of self-expression and prevents the opportunity for them to embrace their true identities."

Thanks for being you, Ethan. We think you look stunning.

'Making A Murderer' Proves One Thing For Sure

Look at that square jaw! Do dimples get any sexier than this? And the prematurely gray salt-and-pepper hair?! OMG! Clearly "Making a Murderer" needs to have a spin-off show called "Making a Babe."

Aaron Keller, the silver fox reporter on the uber-popular and highly addictive Netflix documentary "Making a Murderer" has become the show-stealer for his smoldering good looks -- and yes, his hair is a big part of it. Twitter loves the dude -- and we're thinking so does every guy out there who has gone prematurely gray.

Keller, who was a reporter with NBC26 in Green Bay at the time of filming, now has a law degree and joined the New Hampshire state bar in 2014. We'd like to think that the possible legal injustices involving the Steven Avery case got to him and pushed our Disney Prince in the right direction. He also works as an English and Communications adjunct professor at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, where, it's been quipped, enrollment is likely soaring at the moment.

But back to the hair! Check out what they are saying on Twitter:

We're not sure it's just a generational thing.

He needn't speak. He just must be.

And if we were all being honest.

We feel your pain.

Here's a thought ...

As for those lovely tresses, Keller is not alone in going gray early. Typically, white people start going gray in their mid-30s, Asians in their late-30s, and African-Americans in their mid-40s, says WebMd. Keller was in his mid-20s when Making a Murderer was taped.

There are few things in life we love more than sweatpants. But, by that same token, there are few things in life that infuriate us more than when we go to put on our freshly laundered sweats, only to find that the string has fallen out.

When that happens, we have two options. One, put on a different (less comfortable) pair of pants, or two, painstakingly re-string them. But thanks to our friends at Refinery29, there is now a third option: Quickly restring them and then live your life.

Watch the video above to find out how you can easily restring your sweatpants with nothing more than a straw. Thank goodness this life hack came just in time for sweatpants season.

Reese Witherspoon Channels Harry Potter In This Magically Collegiate Look

We always knew there was something magical about Reese Witherspoon.

The actress stepped out in Los Angeles Thursday in a particularly preppy look. Something about the color scheme, the collared shirt and the backpack are giving us some major Elle Woods/Harry Potter crossover vibes:

She's practically ready to join Harry and Ron at Hogwarts.

All she needs to do is swap that Starbucks for a magic wand and she's all set for the sorting hat (she's a total Griffyndor).

To see more photos of Witherspoon, check out X17online.

Ecco Bella Product Review

Recently, I have been on the hunt for gluten, paraben, and cruelty free beauty products. Through my search I came across Ecco Bella. Their beauty products range from skin and hair care to different types of makeup products. I selected a few items to see if they could be added into my beauty arsenal. Below is a review of the items I tried.

Ecco Bella FlowerColor Lipstick

2016-01-06-1452092545-9477389-ScreenShot20160106at10.01.53AM.png

The finish of all these lipsticks is semi gloss. These lipsticks applied smoothly without flaking, and my lips felt pretty hydrated all day. They are made from a simple formula of vegetable waxes, oils, and mineral pigments. I was pleasantly surprised that I have found a natural lipstick that is every bit as good as its sythetic counterparts. The colors were highly pigmented and true to the colors in the tube.

Good For You Gloss

2016-01-06-1452093238-2996872-ScreenShot20160106at10.13.07AM.png

These glosses are made from castor oil, organic palmfruit stearin, shea butter, candelilla wax, aloe vera, vanilla flavor, and complex Vitamin E. The colors were great but the staying power was just OK. Make sure you have this on hand for reapplying throughout the day. The finish on these glosses is shiny and somewhat sheer. They are great for anyone who tends to not like a lot of makeup. They provide the right amount of natural color without looking overdone.

FlowerColor Face Powder

2016-01-06-1452092975-6930747-ScreenShot20160106at10.08.19AM.png

I normally use liquid foundation and I found that this compact made a great setting powder. I use a light dusting after using my liquid foundation to ensure everything is set in place. This formula has a buildable coverage, making it also great for people who don't use liquid or cream foundations. The powder has added green tea extract, flower waxes, aloe vera and vitamin E, making it wonderful for your skin as well!

FlowerColor Treatment Serum

2016-01-06-1452093058-364061-ScreenShot20160106at9.57.39AM.png

I have been big on face serums lately and I found this one to be one of the best I have tried. It is amazing! I use it on my face, neck, scalp, and backs of my hands. It does wonders for my skin and has a pleasant and calming scent. Depending on your skin type this serum can be used alone or under your daily cream.

Sexuality and Fitness: Meet Maat Petrova, Founder of the Fem Magic Movement

Lose weight, flatten that belly, diet, and sculpt your arms a la Michelle Obama.

Such are the typical, yet commendable fitness and wellness goals mapped out by countless women at the top of any New Year. But what about a plan for women to get fit while coming into full ownership of their femininity and sexuality? Maat Petrova, Founder of the Fem Magic Movement, is on a mission to help women do both.

Petrova, who earned a Masters Degree in Mental Health Therapy, started FeMMM, after years of working towards healing her mind, body, and spirit. For her online fitness classes such as Sensual Yogic Flow, The Yoni Twerk, and Island Waistline Whine, Maat demonstrates how to raise your feminine vibrations through sensual movement like Caribbean style whining, kegeling while twerking, and body touching. Affirmations are also an important part of her group classes and private sessions with clients looking to overcome mental and emotional issues.

"So I'll have people say things like, 'I'll manifest my greatest self and attain my dreams' while doing squats," she explains.

Much of her mission to help women began during her time in graduate school after she developed a service called Beaut Camp, a 12 week online holistic program that incorporates healing through the the chakra system. She initially created it to assist women who've experienced child sexual abuse. It has since evolved to include women with diverse spiritual goals.

2016-01-06-1452053044-8849427-Maat3.jpg

Though the Brooklyn bred Trinidadian has been teaching fitness for years sexuality wasn't always a part of her lesson plan. Initially she feared she would come off as unprofessional if she incorporated sex, but as time went on, she couldn't shake the fact that she was omitting a large part of who she is.

"Once I started to share that aspect of myself, my sexual self, that's when all the followers started to come," says the 38-year-old mother of three. She quickly saw her Instagram following grow to over 30,000 in just under one year.

"It's not about sex sells it's more so about the fact that here's this woman, she's a mother of 3, she lives a healthy lifestyle, she shares motivational words, and she embraces her sexuality," she added.

2016-01-06-1452053106-5636362-maat4.jpg
Petrova and her three daughters

Embracing sexuality isn't just about exercise and the act of sex for Petrova. It's been an important part of her personal therapy and self-healing from her past.

"I grew up in an abusive household and experienced sexual abuse secondhand first, so that of course affected my psyche and my decision making as a young adult or adolescent," she said. "And then also experiencing my own sexual abusive situations added on to my own psychosis. That definitely took a toll on my self-esteem."

Petrova credits her stepfather for kickstarting her transformation after introducing her to teachings on black consciousness during her late teens. He also changed her name from Petrova, which was originally her first name, to Maat, the name of an ancient Egyptian Goddess, which means truth, justice, balance, and morality. By the time she was 17-years-old she took matters into her own hands and made diet a part of her transformation, going from eating every sort of meat, including fast food, to becoming vegan in a matter of weeks.

"Along with the diet change, that also affected my consciousness. It just gave me more clarity, it rose my vibrations, and allowed me to be a better person. It developed me mentally, physically, and spiritually."

2016-01-06-1452053187-8629175-maat6.jpg
Petrova before & after changing her lifestyle

But it left her body without the feminine curves she desired, so she began working out with a trainer who showed her how to build muscle mass on her lean frame. She eventually began taking belly dancing and African Dance classes, which she now incorporates in her online fitness lessons.

Overall, she says it was her mother who helped her become the woman she is today.

"Starting the vegan lifestyle when I was 17 and seeing my mother allow stress to kind of take over her body, I learned from that. I learned from her mistakes and I learned from her greatness,' she said. "I learned how to let things go, I learned how to not let things fester inside of me, and I learned how to just go through it. Because if you go through it, yes it's going to hurt like hell, but it won't last as long as it will if you continue to avoid it."

Have you been struggling with getting comfortable with your femininity? Maat Petrova shares her advice on simple ways to get in touch with your sexuality."

"Our sexuality is who we are. Our sex is woman. Our sexual organs which are our ovaries, uterus, and vagina make us female. Being female and being in tune with those aspects of ourselves will allow us to then become more comfortable in who we are as women, not just as a person, but as women. We should be in tune with all aspects of being a woman. Being in tune with being a woman is you being in tune with your sexuality. It's a really basic thing. It's kind of like you denying yourself your own humanity in not being in tune with your sexuality."

How to get in touch with your sensual side

1- Turn on some music and go in front of the mirror and move with yourself. Do some mirror therapy. Move with yourself, look at yourself, feel on yourself; do things that you think you're not supposed to be doing. You have a body, why is it bad for you to touch your own body? You have hips, why is it bad for you to move your own hips? Do these things that you thought were taboo, that you thought were perverse because that's what western society tells us when it really isn't. They are telling us to deny who we are. We are woman, we have body, we have hips, butt, breasts, we have uteruses, we have vaginas. All of this, they all have a purpose.

2- Incorporate affirmations. Tell yourself you're beautiful, tell yourself you're sexy, tell yourself you have everything inside of you to be the best woman and attract the best things to you in this world. Tell yourself amazing things. Compliment yourself throughout the day because that's the reason women are unable to compliment other women because they don't compliment themselves enough. They are busy critiquing themselves because they are trying to fit into these molds that society pushes forward through media. They're busy comparing themselves to these photo shopped images that the media puts out there. Love yourself through words, love yourself through your eyes.

3-
Do things for yourself that you would want another person to do for you. Buy yourself flowers. Throw flower petal trails toward your flower petal bath. Do things for yourself that you want others to do for you.
