5 Effective Anti-Aging Power Potions

2016-01-20-1453266749-8947025-Platinum7.jpg

In the relentless pursuit of flawless skin, one thing is certain... many women and men will voluntarily suffer through nerve-rattling "procedures" and burn-inducing creams in hopes of waking up to fewer lines and a more youthful glow. So, when products come along claiming to deliver results, and after many thorough test drives there are visible differences... it's time to drop those other jars of empty promises and immediately take notice. Here are five (priced from $50 to $398) that deserve your undivided attention...

• Anti-Aging Facial Oil by annmarie

I've been a longtime fan of annmarie products, and for good reason -- they're all natural and sourced from organic, wildcrafted herbs (check out the impressive ingredient lists for every single one of their offerings), the company is incredibly ethical and, bottom line... they work. Facial oils have soared in popularity over the last few years. They're incredibly moisturizing and contrary to belief, this one sinks right in without an ounce of greasy residue. It's made with chia and carrot seed oils, known for helping smooth wrinkles and soften skin. A little goes a long way too. And, priced just under $50, this bottle usually lasts me a few months. I pump one drop into my hands and press it gently in around my forehead, eyes, cheeks and neck. It contains Moroccan rose absolute which gives it a natural, floral meets berries scent. Applied day or night, this is a fixture in my skincare regime.

•Age Is Only A Number Elixir by Vasanti

Vasanti is one of my favorite recent discoveries. The brand has been a big hit in Canada, and is now available in the United States -- lucky us! Created by three sisters who put in years of research and heart, this full blown skin care and cosmetics line is not only effective, it's one of the most affordable luxury products on the market. And, what a clever elixir this is -- paraben-free and double duty, combining the antioxidants of pomegranate and argan oils with powerful serum ingredients like brown sea algae, said to help repair skin and prevent it from sagging. It has a subtle, alluring scent and applied day or night it makes my skin glow. Considering most prestige serums on the market are a minimum of $100 and up, Age Is Only A Number is a total knock out at $62.

• Erasa XEP 30 by Erasa Skincare

A wildly exciting entry in the battle against wrinkles, Erasa XEP 30 has made quite an impactful debut. There's a ton of science and big, juicy words behind this concentrate, and I urge you to read up further on this stuff via the link above. It's patented and "was developed by a year-long combined research effort between scientists at Activen and BioMimetic Laboratories." Paraben-free, the scent is pretty nice and although texture wise a bit tacky, it sinks right in and leaves skin feeling silky. Upon application lines really do seem to fade and my skin appears more flawless throughout the day. That did it for me; I'm sold and hooked!

2016-01-22-1453424028-8304576-bottle_1.jpg

•Phloretin CF by SkinCeuticals

This power-packed serum has been a consistent mainstay in my beauty arsenal for well over the last five years. I will be forever loyal because it's helped my skin maintain a clear, youthful glow. Containing a triple threat of phloretin, pure vitamin c and ferulic acid antioxidants, it protects skin against environmental damage and reduces discolorations. My skin always feels firm after applying a couple of drops and it's definitely gone to town on those stubborn brown spots -- they're much smaller now!

• EGF Platinum 7 by Nurse Jamie

Direct from the empress of flawless skin for the red carpet crowd, Nurse Jamie -- when you're in the mood to splurge on a high octane cream look no further than the star of her celebrity loved line of products, EGF Platinum 7 (see image above). Loaded with Platinum, Plant Stem Cells and 24K Gold, these primo ingredients are what Nurse Jamie says, "provide the ultimate skin transformation" and also contribute towards the higher price point. Coupled with Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), this whipped delicacy enhances collagen for a more youthful complexion. The texture and scent are as luxe as the precious metals inside. I call it a facial in a jar and one stop shopping for wow-worthy skin.

Trends to Know: 5 Prints You Need to Try in 2016

By Avery Matera, Glamour

Midway through the month of January, our wardrobes could certainly use a little pick-me-up. And what better way to breathe some life into our black-and-grey outfits than some bright and bold prints?

Lucky for us, the most recent pre-fall collections were full of graphic patterns galore, and this season takes them to a whole new level--from multi-tone polka dots to blown-out plaids; ditsy florals and graphic leopard. Whether you're rocking them head-to-toe, like these fashion-loving ladies below, or mixing them into your wardrobe one piece at a time, check out the prints you need to try right now.

Blown-Out Plaid:
2016-01-22-1453487949-9805110-prefall2016printsplaidno21h724.jpg
No. 21

Instead of the clean lines of gingham, tartan, and the like, try a more blown-out twist on the trend this year. This '90s-inspired print brings with it memories of grunge, but looks equally great when applied to tailored silhouettes like dresses and coats.

Ditsy Florals:
2016-01-22-1453488010-3317145-prefall2016printsditsyfloralscoachh724.jpg
Coach

Minimize your blooms this season and opt for tiny ditsy florals. While it's a given that feminine styles like skirts and dresses look awesome in a Liberty print, try the pattern with sportier shapes, like bomber jackets and even sneakers.

Graphic Leopard:
2016-01-22-1453488059-6358161-prefall2016printsleopardstellamccartneyh724.jpg
Stella McCartney

Don't hold back when it comes to animal prints in 2016. Pick a statement piece, like a mid-length coat, and choose one in a strong graphic pattern. It's a head-turner, for sure, but if you're going to do it, do it.

Multi-Tone Polka Dots:
2016-01-22-1453488096-7984882-prefall2016printspolkadotsaltuzarrah724.jpg
Altuzarra

Polka dots are back for 2016, and they are much more polished than in years past--slightly larger in scale than an understated pin-dot, but not quite that oversized (a good rule-of-thumb is to match the size of a quarter). Seek the print for weekend or eveningwear!

Bright and Bold Stripes:
2016-01-22-1453488634-8245865-prefall2016printebottegavenetah724.jpg
Bottega Veneta

When it comes to stripes this year, go for color. Daunting as it may sound, a classic pattern like graphic stripes are an easy way to mix brighter hues into your wardrobe without feeling over the top.

Beautiful Hair at Critics' Choice Points to Exciting Year

$

0
The Critics' Choice Awards brought more signals that hair trends are on the move.

Host T. J. Miller walked the 'blue' carpet in Santa Monica with wife, Kate Gorney, who beautifully exemplified a new trend this year toward warm, coppery reds. Bryce Dallas Howard also did a really warm red with hints of copper.

"Fargo" star Kristen Dunst did a gorgeous sleek bob in blonde with dark base and accents. Bobs are trending strong and Dunst was joined by Helen Mirren in a blonde tone-on-tone, and Mary J. Blige, who wore her blonde bob with bangs for a retro-60s twist. The possibilities for bobs are endless, part of why they're trending so strong.

Updos are on the move, too. Constance Zimmer posed on the blue carpet at Barker Hangar in a dark, dark brown color with bangs and face-framing wisps. This is a lovely, playful, romantic look that worked so well with her rich red lipstick. Joan Jett stayed true to her roots with an '80s rocker pixie in black. Deep side parts continue trending strong. Kathryn Hahn went with this look for her long brown hair.

Marisa Tomei and Krysten Ritter went with long dark hair and center parts, both of which have been on a long run of popularity - Hey, it works. Jennifer Anniston also remained stylish with a center part and longer hair, similar to what she did last year at these awards, this time in light brown with blonde highlights framing her face.

Last year at the Critics' Choice, we saw a lot of what I describe as effortless styles. That's been a long trend in hair. It is simple, carefree and beautiful. Colors appear natural with subtle transitions, lots of tone-on-tone, a far cry from the ombres. Waves were natural, loose, or nearly straight.

Anniston was emblematic of that trend last year at this event. She was darker at the roots, almost like her hair was naturally darkening from a sun-kissed summer blonde. We saw lots of ponytails and slick-back hair. Even recently when we've seen some vibrant candy streaks of color, the transitions have typically been pretty soft.

Now, we seem to be on the move. I'm betting this will be an exciting year for hair. Can't wait to see more!

How To Achieve A 'Season-less Wardrobe'

It's 2016 and Fashion standards have been in neutral standings.

To our excitement, there aren't many style or fashion rules to be broken. Designers can now have their creative way and mix colors with seasoned pieces more than ever. One example is you can have a spring color palette and heavier fabric combined to make unique looks.

This makes things a lot smoother when you're trying to achieve a seasonless wardrobe. Seasonless apparel doesn't go out of style easily. Also, with unique pieces that are a mixture of seasonal colors and prints can be layered with other bold pieces that are seasonal. A seasonless wardrobe will add flare to your ordinary style.

Here are a few simple ways to get the most from your wardrobe all year round.

2016-01-21-1453401909-6080374-SeasonlessWardrobe5.jpg

Fashionable tanks or sleeveless tops are great pieces to add on layers or wear all year round.

Denim is another huge component to a season-less wardrobe because it can be worn during any season.

Farrah Abraham Hits Back At Kendall Jenner And The Kardashians

$

Well, someone is touchy.

Clearly overlooking the fact that the Kardashian family actually aided in making her relevant for another day, Farrah Abraham hit back at Kendall Jenner for a comment she made on her sister Khloe's new talk show.

The "Teen Mom" star, who was just out promoting her new webcam business at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas on Wednesday, shared a pic of Kim's ex and sex tape partner Ray J photoshopped into a family snap along with the message, "I made this whole family famous with my dick."

Abraham, 24, tweeted the photo at Jenner adding "#Lifechoices."

The hashtag, you see, was a dig at the comments Jenner on the show. It all started when one of the writers on Khloe's show had the genius idea to have Snoop Dogg and Kym Whitley act out Abraham's recent Twitter feud with Nicki Minaj. Snoop played Abraham to perfection in a moment that can only be described as true theater, but it was the discussion as to who won the feud that Abraham took issue with.

"I don’t really agree with a lot of Farrah’s decisions in life. That’s why I’d say I’m on Nicki’s side,” Jenner explained before her sister quickly agreed. “I’m Team Nicki all day, every day,” Khloe said.

Jenner didn't elaborate on which of the "Teen Mom"-turned-porn star's specific life choices she was at odds with, but Abraham saw it as an opportunity to get some attention and didn't hesitate to break out the hypocrite card.

There's probably no winner here, but it's always great to see Abraham shamelessly promote herself -- and her zinger -- by retweeting and liking all the stories written about the feud. Never change, Farrah. Never change (and obviously, please retweet).

The Malala Fund And Toms Made A Scarf To Fund Girls' Education

Some things are better together: babies and dogs. Netflix and blankets. Great social enterprises and fearless activists.

Same goes for the new collaboration between Toms Shoes and Pakistani Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai. The company and the girls' education advocate have partnered on a new item -- a colorful scarf, with sales benefiting the Malala Fund.

“It’s a scarf girls and women can wear all over the world from the U.S. to Pakistan, whether as a fashion accessory or a beautiful headscarf or hijab,” Yousafzai told PeopleStyle.

Each scarf is printed with a quotation from Yousafzai that reads, "One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world," along with a pattern inspired by traditional Islamic artistry, according to Today.com. The scarves will be available soon in Toms' retail stores and website for $48, and the company estimates that net proceeds will be between $10 to $15 per scarf.

All of the profits from its sales will go to the Malala Fund, which helps girls around the world receive 12 years of quality education.

Yousafzai has been an advocate for girls' education since age 11, and was 15 years old when Taliban members shot her on her way to school. She made a full recovery in a British hospital and went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, making her the youngest ever Nobel laureate.

Blake Mycoskie, Toms founder, told Today that the group is "honored to be able to partner with the Malala Fund and help provide education to girls around the world."

We all have those cringe-worthy photos from our teenage years. You know, the ones where we have frizzy hair, terrible shoes and questionable eye makeup. Thankfully, ours are safely tucked away in old photo albums. But if you're a celebrity, these photos are on the Internet, visible to anyone with a Wifi connection. So basically, stars are forced to relive all their worst style moments on the regular.

And that's exactly what Hilary Duff did in a new video for Cosmopolitan.com. The "Younger" star took a look at some of her ensembles from the early aughts and told us exactly how she feels now, looking back.

When she saw a picture of herself in a pink dress from 2001, Duff remarked, "I definitely did not have a stylist. No, I think that at this time, I thought that it was pretty cool that I had a Tiffany's necklace and a little Louis Vuitton pochette."

Watch the video above to hear her thoughts on her Juicy Couture dresses, silk kimonos and hair 'dos of days past.

How To Break Up With Your Hairdresser Without Being A Jerk

$
0
0

At some point or another, you may have broken up with your hairdresser or at least tried to, and ended up not loving your locks as much. Complacency has a way of convincing us that everything will eventually smooth out. But you shouldn't feel trapped in an unhealthy relationship with your stylist at the risk of having bad hair.

Below, learn how you can take back control and cut ties without coming to blows.

Give a heads up. When you call to schedule your next hair appointment, that is a great time to mention any issues you'd like to discuss. Jodyne Speyer, the author of "Dump 'Em: How to Break Up With Anyone From Your Best Friend to Your Hairdresser," recommends being as specific as you can. For example, you can say, "I noticed that this last haircut grew out a lot faster than the previous ones." Or, "The color had more yellow than usual."

Set a "get it right" deadline. Speyer points out that it is key to remember everyone has an off day and that your hairdresser wants you to leave their chair happy. Allow them to fix the problem, as this lays the groundwork should you decide to dump them later. Your next salon visit should show that any or all issues are corrected, adds celebrity hairstylist David Babaii, the pro behind many of Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman and Olivia Wilde's red carpet looks. "If you don't like something, speak up. If you do like it, it is always nice to hear."

Trust your instincts. No one knows your best hair better than you, says Vivian Diller, a New York City-based clinical psychologist and co-author of "Face It," a book about the psychology of beauty as we age. "I've heard of people who decide to leave a hairstylist and think they may be punished or feel as though they've breached an implicit trusting relationship. Yet, that switch is sometimes needed."

Babaii believes that cutting your hairdresser loose is definitely valid if they are constantly late for your appointment, not styling your hair as requested, avoiding your concerns or even talking on the phone and texting while doing your hair.

Say it simply. We tend to over talk when it comes to dumping service providers, according to Speyer. She adds, "There are usually one or two reasons why we are not happy. Stick to those, pepper it with kindness and do not confuse things by bringing other issues into the equation." And if your stylist starts to cry or get upset, hear them out and don't react to their anger with more anger.

If you struggle with confrontation, try sending them a card that wishes them well, but lets them know you've decided to move on and do thank your hairdresser for the years you've had together.

Don't use outrageous excuses. We are guilty as charged of dialing up our stylists to say we have a "family emergency" just to avoid a fee. However, Babaii has heard of clients going as far to say they had surgery and no longer will be able to drive, or moved out of the country. Disappearing without telling your hairdresser is a big no-no, says Speyer. "There is nothing more awkward than running into your stylist at the market."

Leave the door open. Diller notes that there is a strong bond shared with your hairstylist as we hand over complete control for them cut, color and curl our hair, creating a need for this relationship. "It is an association with stability and saneness and while some people are able to let go with ease, others may be more hesitant."

If you think there is a chance you might return to your stylist, Speyer advises telling them just that. However, one shocking fact she's learned is how many hairdressers wish they could dump their clients and not necessarily for personal reasons. "Sometimes they just don't like cutting a specific type of hair, so many are relieved when you dump them," says Speyer.

15 Thoughts Every Woman Has Getting Dressed In The Winter

$
0
0

We hate the winter. It's cold, our noses basically run for three months straight, we always slip on ice and to add insult to injury, getting dressed is a bit of a nightmare.

First of all, there are only so many ways to look chic and stay warm, and come the end of January, we've often exhausted all options. Not to mention the pilling sweaters, static hair and itchy wool.

Herewith, 15 thoughts all women have while getting dressed in the winter.

1. Can I get away with wearing these tights for a third day in a row? Is that gross?

2. Ugh, the feeling of putting my dry legs into these tights is the WORST.

3. Sh*t did my tights just rip? Whatever, I'm wearing them anyway.

4. How can I make Uggs appropriate for a meeting?

5. Where are my gloves?

6. What in my closet has an elastic waistband?

7. My sweater is shedding everywhere. Should I suck it up for the day or pick a different sweater?

8. Does this turtleneck give me a uniboob?

9. Does layering leggings under my jeans make my legs look bigger?

10. Will the bar have a coat check or is my coat just going to end up on the floor? Should I even bring a coat?

11. Still can't find my gloves.

12. Do I go for style or warmth?

13. Can I just wear a blanket all day?

14. Ughughuggh my coat won't fit over my bulky sweaters.

15. Seriously, where are my gloves?

So, in summation:

Thom Browne Just Made Face Hats Happen At Paris Fashion Week

$

Every few months, Fashion Week serves as an indicator of the trends that will soon be trickling down to us regular folks in the coming season.

If Thom Browne and his Fall 2016 menswear show at Paris Fashion Week on Sunday have anything to do with it, one of those trends will be face hats.

Browne sent models down the runway in tailored but purposefully tattered coats and pants, accompanied by dogs-shaped handbags and hats worn on faces, each perforated with a few small holes in the crown through which the model could see and breathe.

The American designer is no stranger to putting on edgy, theatrical shows. You might recall Browne's "twisted" fairytale womenswear show from Fall 2013 or the geishas of Spring 2016. His latest show is proof that at least for Browne, the "show" aspect of a "fashion show" is still alive and well.

In any event, kudos to those models. We can barely imagine successfully making it down the runway even without a visual obstacle in our face.

Johnny Depp's daughter is making quite the splash at Sundance.

Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of the famous actor and French singer/model Vanessa Paradis, posed for pictures at the premiere of her new movie, "Yoga Hosers," at Sundance Film Festival on Sunday

Depp wore black shoes and pants with a white t-shirt, black studded jacket and red scarf, drawing comparisons to her dad's red carpet style. She paired her look with a nude lip and blue eyeshadow.

The 16-year-old stars as teenage yoga enthusiast Colleen Collette, who must battle an ancient evil presence with her friend (also named Colleen) to make it to a party thrown by seniors.

Depp has already made quite the impression in the fashion world, attending Chanel shows at only 15 years old and becoming the face of Chanel eyewear at 16. We're sure we're going to see a lot more of her.

Check out the trailer for her new movie:

Um, You Might Want to Clean Those Leather Gloves

$

You're washing your duvet on a regular basis. You're conditioning your itchy sweaters. You've got this laundry thing down.

Oh, except for those leather gloves you use to touch, um, everything.

Here are two ways to wash your hand warmers--no dry cleaner required.

If you have salt on them: Snowball fight resulted in some weird white stains? Treat your gloves as you would your salty boots and rub them down with vinegar. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl. Dab with a soft cloth (making sure not to rub the salt in further). The salt should lift right off.

If they're just grimy: Hi, you've sneezed in these gloves multiple times a day for weeks. Time to buy a $6 tin of saddle soap. Use a damp cloth to lather up a small amount of the soap all over the glove's exterior. Then use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away the soap residue (and, of course, the germs). You are free to go about your regularly scheduled winter routine.

7 Things That Might Happen If You Stop Getting Manicures

There's something so dang satisfying about having perfectly trimmed and polished nails. But if you're trying to save a few bucks or have noticed that your mani is constantly chipping, you might need to take a little break. Here, seven things that could happen if you ditch the polish.

Related: 22 Tips for Really Pretty Nails

2016-01-25-1453736066-116844-stop_manis_hero_.jpg

1. Your nails will probably get stronger.

Polish, while full of chemicals, is pretty harmless on its own. Polish remover, on the other hand, is packed with strong solvents that are extremely drying to your nails and surrounding skin. And since you can't get a manicure without removing old polish first, you're constantly subjecting your nails to dryness, which leads to peeling, which leads to breaking.

Related: The One Trick to Drying Your Nail Polish Insanely Fast

2. Your nails will definitely look brighter.
Just as wine and coffee leave your teeth yellow, polish can give nails a jaundiced look with continued use. Take a break and let them get back to their healthy, naturally pinkish hue.

3. And your nails will feel smoother.
Science lesson: Nails are made up of layers of dead keratin. (Imagine the shingles of your roof.) When you strip off polish with remover, you're taking superficial layers of the nail with it, which can cause white spots and roughness. Keep nails au naturel and those uneven patches will grow out with time.

4. But you'll probably need to keep them extra hydrated.
With no color to distract from the dryness that is now your naked nails, you'll want to keep them super hydrated. Keep cuticle oil nearby and apply two to three times per day.

5. You'll reduce your chances of getting sick.
From not soaking tools long enough to substituting disinfectants for cheaper ones, there are many ways bacteria--both viral and fungal--can be transmitted at a salon (even the fancy ones). Not to mention that those tools and brushes are being used on everyone who enters--even Sicky Mccoughy to your left.

6. And you'll finally have money for a rainy day fund.
At ten dollars a pop--not including tip--and weekly maintenance, that "cheapie" manicure adds up to a hefty sum by the end of the year (more than $3,000!). That could fund a trip to Thailand. Or buy that purse. Or go into your 401(k).

7. You'll have to learn to love your naked nails.
Smooth, bright, strong and cheap aside--you're also parting with that limited edition Essie polish. And the compliments that always ensue. (Even if only temporarily.) Just remember health...and Thailand. Happiness comes in many forms, after all.

While Jennifer Lopez was living it up on the floor during her Las Vegas show Sunday night, her glittery jumpsuit split open, proving it was no match for her famous booty.

But JLo, being the pro that she is, was unfazed by the wardrobe mishap. And much to her luck, it happened right at the end of the show while she was taking her bow.

Clearly, it was just another day for the performer.

The "Booty" singer kicked off her Vegas residency last week, when she performed for a star-studded crowd that included Gina Rodriguez, Rebel Wilson and Justin Bieber.

12 Luxurious Cleansers for Your Winter-Battered Skin

By Ashley Weatherford

If your daily face cleanser is a Duncan Hines yellow cake -- basic and reliable -- then a cleansing balm is a meringue glacée from Ladurée: savor-worthy, luxurious, and a step above anything else. Cleansing balms are buttery solid to semi-solid face-cleaning emulsions that sweep makeup, oil, and grime from your face while leaving your skin feeling like cashmere. They're compatible with almost all skin types because they deep clean without stripping skin. Just rub a dime-size amount of the balm on your face until it transforms into an oil that you splash off.

Cleansing balms aren't exactly new, but they garnered a fresh following when Eve Lom, the Rolls-Royce of balm cleansers, emerged in stores several years ago. Now there are dozens of balm cleansers available, so the Cut sought to find the best of the bunch. Here are the 12 I tested to weed out the commendable from the crappy, judging them on fragrance, texture, overall value, and their ability to make your skin feel as soft as delicious fresh dough.

Not recommended: Pixi Nourishing Cleansing Balm

I wanted to love this delicious balm, I really did. Pixi's Nourishing Cleansing Balm smells like fresh-cut roses. It's a scent I'd actually wear during the day as a perfume if I could, but there's a problem with its rinse. Without the aid of a small cloth (which the brand does not supply) and a bit of elbow grease, the balm leaves an oily film on skin. It requires far too many splashes of water for my face to feel only moderately clean, and commands too much time in my already-packed nightly skin-care routine.

Not recommended: Sunday Riley Blue Moon Cleansing Balm

Many cleansing balms are solid, smooth concoctions that quickly melt when introduced to skin, and then there's Sunday Riley's balm. The newest launch of the bunch, the Gatorade-blue balm is dense and almost rock-solid. As it slowly melts, it takes on a grainy texture. Though exfoliating, this causes more than a few crumbs to land in the sink instead of staying on your face before rinsing. Well, at least you can see where your money is going.

Recommended with reservations: Darphin Aromatic Cleansing Balm with Rosewood

Darphin's version differs from the bunch in that you apply the cleanser to a wet face. It comes in a teeny jar (the size of one scoop of ice cream at best) and costs as much as my gas bill. Like any decent cleansing balm, it effectively removes makeup without leaving any sort of residue. But the balm's earthy herbal scent is too strong and is ultimately too overwhelming to make cleansing very enjoyable.

Recommended: Omoricza Melting Cleanser

Here's lies the lightest of the bunch: a fluffy gelée with the consistency of a lotion. The seafoam-green whipped formula carries the slightest tinge of a fragrance, expertly toeing the line between faint and overwhelming. Of all of the balms it was the easiest to rinse, and left my face feeling clean but not stripped.

Recommended: Charlotte Tilbury Multi Miracle Glow

This reminds me of Charlotte's light-as-air moisturizer, Magic Cream, which has served as a long-time backstage favorite. More like a gel but packing slightly more heft than Omorvicza's gelée, the glycerin-rich formula absorbs into skin like a lotion. Actually, it can be a lotion, if you leave it on dry skin as the package suggests. Or try it as a mask, and rinse after ten minutes or even after leaving it on overnight. But if you elect to use it as a cleanser, that works, too, and makes skin feel clean and not dry, but not considerably moisturized either.

Recommended: Amanda Lacey Cleansing Pomade

Do you remember when you were a kid and you had a cold so your parent rubbed your chest with a pile of gloop? In many ways, Amanda Lacey's cleansing pomade reminds me of that. It has an ointmentlike consistency and a tinge of camphor -- the medicinal-smelling compound often found in cold rubs. Its fragrance is soft and comforting and its porcelain jar begs to be repurposed for storage after the balm runs out. On the other hand, the high price point is a slight turnoff, even though the balm ushers in a wave of baby skin post-use.

Recommended: Bamford Cleansing Balm

When I was young, my parents would often take me to an African market where it felt like heaps of almost-yellow shea butter were larger than me. Bamford's cleansing oil looks just like that -- thick, creamy, and the color of yellow-cake batter. After you've rubbed the balm all over your face, Bamford encourages you to wait a few minutes to reap the hydrating benefits similar to a moisturizing mask. That works, and upon rinsing, my skin felt soft, supple, and freakishly smooth. The scent was slightly too earthy for my liking, but may be inoffensive to others.

Recommended: Elemis Pro-collagen Cleansing Balm

It's ludicrous to expect a cleanser to boost collagen production, like this balm's name implies, but don't hold that against Elemis's smooth jelly. The balm is equipped with a towel that you wet to gently emulsify and wipe away the melted wax. Comprised of mostly almond oil and beeswax, it has an herbal but non-offensive scent that is actually pleasing. It also melts away makeup and leaves skin smooth, but slightly misses the mark for superior softness.

Highly Recommended: REN Rosa Centifolia No. 1 Purity Cleansing Balm

Am I a sucker for marketing? Maybe, because when I read that REN's rose-scented balm is engineered to not only clean skin but also relieve stress, I thought, Wow, weird, I'm suddenly chill. Enclosed with the balm is a thin cloth that you wet and wipe over skin after you've rubbed the creamy formula all over. It melts easily, cuts through makeup, and rinses away after a few quick splashes.

Highly Recommended: Peter Thomas Roth Cleansing Butter

No matter how many other balms I test, the standout feature for Peter Thomas Roth's cleansing butter is its deliciously creamy texture. It's super-thick and shares the same texture as fancy restaurant honey butter. When it came to removing eye makeup this balm performed the best -- only requiring a couple of circular sweeps around lashes before mascara melted away in defeat. The included Konjac sponge meant to gently exfoliate is a nice touch, though not particularly needed for a nearly effortless cleanse.

Highly Recommended: De Mamiel Restorative Cleansing Balm

Mango oil and the oil from a white Asian tea flower called camellia unite together in this balm that oozes luxury. Its scent is subtle but there -- slightly fruity and slightly floral. The jar is tiny, like a jar of baby food, but the smooth yellow balm stretches significantly -- an amount slightly larger than pea-size is all you need. It strikes the perfect balance between texture, scent, and rinse-ability, rendering each wash a virtual spa experience in my bathroom. To boot, it's packaged in a pretty black glass jar that also doubles as a natural preservative for the balm's mostly organic ingredients.

Highly Recommended: Su:m37 Skin Saver Melting Cleansing Balm

Su:m37 holds a special place in my heart, and the cult Korean brand's cleansing balm is no different. First there's the packaging, which is smartly magnetic, allowing the enclosed metal spoon to stick closely to the container. The actual formula -- a mixture of oils -- wipes away makeup without feeling heavy on my skin and the cleanser smells, quite literally, like fresh flowers. With each use it feels as though my skin is gliding up a never-ending escalator of clarity and softness. It's a clear winner in my book.

Fashion Students Create Mind-Blowing Designs Made From Bubble Wrap

Video produced for The Huffington Post by Samantha Guff

If you aren't aware that Jan. 25 is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, then you're not alone. We were also oblivious to this calendar event until recently, but decided that it deserved to be celebrated in fashion. Literally.

While the bulky plastic material is almost exclusively used to protect fragile items during shipping, we figured it could also make some pretty clever clothing designs. To that end, we challenged the bright young minds at New York City's High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI) to design runway-ready looks with 450 feet of Bubble Wrap provided by the folks at Sealed Air

Mission impossible? Not for these kids. In just three days the students, who are all members of the school's Fashion With A Purpose Club, created eight mind-blowing ensembles -- from cocktail dresses and cropped jackets to voluminous harem pants and Bubble Wrap adorned shoes.

"It's right in the element of what we do, so we were really excited,"Belinda David, the student's HSFI teacher, told The Huffington Post. "I think they did an amazing job"

David is also the faculty advisor for the Fashion With A Purpose Club, which is an extra-curricular organization that allows the students to study global and social awareness and then create designs with sustainable and recyclable materials.

To add another element of fun, we asked TV personality and style expert Tai Beauchamp to join HuffPost's executive editor of Crime and Weird News, Buck Wolf, and HuffPost senior fashion editor Julee Wilson to judge the designs in true "Project Runway" style at HuffPost's New York City headquarters.

While all the designs were imaginative and well-executed, there could only be one victor and that honor was given to junior Deannelys Coreno. The winning look, which was modeled by Araya Pendarvis, a sophomore at HSFI, consisted of a full skirt and sleeveless raincoat that was complete with a hood and trimmed with silver iridescent tape and 250 jumbo safety pins.

Coreno, 16, says the ensemble took her 12 hours to create but wasn't the hardest design challenge she's ever faced. She has transformed materials like newspaper, plastic bottles, garbage bags and even old CD players into wearable garments.

"I breathe fashion. I love fashion. I work on things like this at home just for fun," Coreno told HuffPost.

“This show, and these students’ work is a wonderful example of what makes Bubble Wrap so great -- it enables innovation, encourages creation. It's also just fun. This kind of clever creativity is exactly what the world needs more of," Jenn Grabenstetter, Director of Global Communications for Sealed Air Product Care, told The Huffington Post. "We are honored that something we make has such a special place in the lives of artists and inventors.”

This year marks the 55th anniversary of Bubble Wrap, which was originally created to be used as wallpaper. And while it quickly became clear that Bubble Wrap was better suited as a packing product, these young design students proved that it's just as versatile as its unconventional roots.

High School of Fashion Industries participants: Aiyanna Jack (designer/model), Kimberly Marquez (model), Samantha Salcedo (model), Lesliebeth Rosario (model/designer), Araya Pendarvis (model), Deannelys Coreno (designer), Naisha Delgado (model), Jalieah Lewis (model),Yvette Munoz (monitor/President of Fashion with a Purpose), Marcel Kosmider (designer), Victoria Whitlock (designer), Keyanna Spann (model/designer), Aileen Mendez (designer), Belinda David (fashion designer/advisor).

Jenna Amatulli and Tiara Chiaramonte assisted in the production of the video.
