12 Reasons To Love Iskra Lawrence, Aerie's Unretouched Role Model

Aerie made major waves when it dropped the first Photoshop-free #aeriereal campaign back in 2014, and has continued to use a slew of unretouched models to promote the brand's underwear. U.K.-based model Iskra Lawrence, who joined Aerie in 2015, is perhaps the most recognizable of the bunch.

Bandeaus...the oh-so-versatile quick fix for your summer tanks! #AerieREAL

On Tuesday, Lawrence, who was once dropped from a modeling agency for being "too big," was named the brand's newest "Role Model." The gig will take her across the country to meet Aerie customers on a college tour, as well as share her experiences, both good and bad, with fans on Aerie's website.

"I spent so many years being repeatedly rejected and told I wasn't good enough," Lawrence told The Huffington Post. "It took a huge toll on my self-esteem until I realized I am more than my body and that actually our beauty comes from diversity."

But there's way more to love about the curvy model -- who told us she'd get rid of the word plus-size because "We don't need to be categorized -- we are all individual and beautifully unique" -- than her kick-ass attitude and confidence. A perusal of her Instagram account, which has 1 million followers, thank-you-very-much, serves as proof. Here are 12 things we love about Lawrence:

1. She has her priorities in order.

2. She's been vocal about her disdain for Photoshop since 2014, when she and a few other models created a Photoshop-free calendar to raise money for cervical cancer awareness.

3. Because this: "I workout to feel strong and fit but also so I can eat some damn good brownies."

4. Her braid game is on point.

5. And her bathing suit game rocks, too.

6. Because she bakes!

7. The girl can lift.

8. She just gets us.

9. She's honest about the perils of dating.

10. She posts some pretty epic #TBT's.

11. She started Runway Riot, a fashion and beauty website for women of all shapes and sizes "dedicated to serving an underrepresented and often overlooked communityof curvier women who deserve to have just as many stylish choices as everyone else."

12. And, she truly loves her body, "tiger stripe stretch marks," "cellulite lightning bolts" and all.

Ashley Graham Is Officially A 2016 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Model

Ashley Graham made history in 2015 when she starred in the first-ever plus-size ad to run in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue -- but even that enormous feat feels like child's play now.

The model/designer/body activist will appear in an editorial in next week's 2016 swimsuit issue. She joins Robyn Lawley, who last year became the first plus-size model to ever officially pose for the highly anticipated mag. Graham confirmed the news on Instagram Tuesday by sharing a shot from the spread.

"It's official -- I'm a @sportsillustrated swimsuit model!!," she captioned the photo. "This is a dream come true. Thank you to everyone who stood up for curves -- our voices were heard and together we can help me win Rookie of the Year. Stay tuned for voting instructions #beautybeyondsize #islay."

Clad in a purple two-piece swimsuit, Graham is perfectly at home on camera, as she should be. She's regularly featured in bikinis and skivvies thanks to her own lingerie line as well as her recently announced partnership with Swimsuits for All.

With New York Fashion Week starting Thursday, it's the perfect time for the message that sexy comes in all shapes and sizes. Here's hoping we see some of that sprinkled onto the runways, too.

Opening Ceremony's Year of China debuts in time for the Lunar New Year with a collaboration with one of New York's most beloved emporiums (and Opening Ceremony's long-time neighbor), Pearl River Mart. When Pearl River opened in 1971 as "Chinese Native Products" in New York City's Chinatown, the concept behind the small shop was simple: to introduce quality Chinese goods to America. Founded by a group of overseas Chinese immigrants and student activists, Pearl River was one of the first retailers to import Chinese-made products--from soy sauce to Chinese cotton tee shirts--to the United States, during the Cold War era when trade bans with the Communist nation were still enforced.

Over the next four decades, Pearl River evolved along with the burgeoning downtown New York art scene. Today, its Broadway bazaar is a destination for products from the mainland, such as cheongsam gowns, paper lanterns, traditional textiles, and even decorative gold buddhas. Everyone, from Chinatown locals to fashion insiders to tourists, appreciates the experience of getting lost in the store, as vast and kaleidoscopic as its host city.

Read the full story and see the accompanying editorial on the Opening Ceremony website.

What Do Your Eyes Say About Your Best Color Choices?

"The eyes are the window to your soul." - William Shakespeare

Did you know that the colors and pattern in your eyes harmonize with your natural hair and skin color to make you naturally appear vibrant and give off a sparkle?

When we introduce a new color into our appearance that is not in harmony with the undertone, value and intensity of our natural coloring, an imbalance may occur. This may be through our hair, makeup, clothing or accessory color choices. The result -- you could look duller, washed out and even older.

When I first found out that each of our unique eye patterns were connected to our natural hair and skin coloring and could in fact indicate to me what somebody's best colors were to wear, I was beyond fascinated. In the video above, I share with you the eye patterns of two different people and let you in on what they tell me about their optimal color choices to include in their appearance.

I am inspired every time I see a new set of eyes! I am in awe of their uniqueness, wonder and beauty.

What are your eyes telling you about your best color choices for your hair, makeup, clothing and accessories?

I hope this blog post has inspired you to take a closer look at your eyes and wear your authenticity!

So THAT'S Why We Call Them 'Khakis'

$

If you were asked to describe the color of khakis, you'd probably be able to do it.

You might say something like, "cream-ish light tan camel color," or just beige, and you'd be right. Look on any golf course and you'll see it on the legs of putters and caddies. But what is that word -- "khaki" -- and why do we use it to refer to an entire subindustry of men's pants?

"You can thank Sir Henry Lawrence," menswear designer Mark McNairy explains in F--k Ivy And Everything Else. In the irreverent new book, out February 16 (it's a sendup of the iconic Japanese style book, Take Ivy) McNairy offers wisdom gained from working at labels including J. Press and Woolrich and lays out all the basics every man should own: Levi's jeans, a white t-shirt, khakis.

Which brings us back to the main question: WTF is a "khaki?" Writes McNairy:

Lawrence was a British military officer stationed in India in the 1840s and a guy who shared my strong belief in personal comfort. Because of the extreme heat, he took to wearing his lightweight pajama bottoms on duty, caking them with dirt (khaki means "soil color" in Urdu) to make them look like his uniform. His buddies followed his example, and eventually armies around the globe did too.

Other origin stories for the timeless pants vary slightly. The trivia book Uncle John's Bathroom Reader also reports that a British soldier dyed comfortable pants a tan color, but gives the nod to Lieutenant Harry Lumsden, who was Lawrence's assistant in 1846, saying he did it intentionally to blend in with the dusty surroundings.

Levi's agrees with khakis originating in the British Indian Army around 1846, suggesting soldiers used teas and curry as well as mud to turn their pants brown. They report "khaki" comes from a Hindi word meaning ‘dusty’ or ‘dust’ (Hindi is basically identical to Urdu in basic vocabulary).

Either way, McNairy adds some bonus trivia in the book by explaining how chinos are different from -- yet derivative of -- khakis.

"Chinos ... were modeled after British military uniforms," he writes, "but because there was a need to conserve fabric, chinos had flat fronts and few, if any, pockets."

There you go. Details vary, but we love to know that people may be walking around in khakis because one genius officer was great at slacking off.

It's a really great day for inclusivity -- and Ashley Graham in particular.

Following the exciting announcement Tuesday that the plus-size model was tapped to pose for the 2016 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, retailer Swimsuits for All announced she'll appear for the second year in a row in their ad in issue -- this time alongside model Philomena Kwao and 56-year-old model Nicola Griffin.

The aggressively inclusive brand, which placed the first-ever plus-size ad in the magazine, hired the three curvy models to star in its #SwimSexy campaign, each wearing the same gold bikini.

Griffin is the oldest woman to ever appear in the swimsuit issue, according to the brand.

"I am overjoyed to represent all women over the age of 50 and hope this campaign inspires them to feel confident in a swimsuit -- a gold bikini, no less!" she told The Huffington Post. "I am a proud mother and love that my body reflects that."

Kwao, who told The Huffington Post she "never dreamed" she "would be a swimsuit model," shared a video from the undeniably sexy shoot, captioned "This is how we #SwimSexy."

It doesn't even come out until next week, but we're calling this the best Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue yet. Be sure to check it out when it goes live online on Feb. 15.

Anne Hathaway has gone (back) to the light side.

The actress, who's expecting her first child with husband Adam Shulman, recently took to Instagram to show fans her newly lightened locks, while at the same time poking fun at her fashion sense.

"Be honest. Did I unwittingly dress like a fashion scarecrow this morning?" Hathaway, 33, captioned the pic.

We're definitely getting the scarecrow vibes, but it kind of works.

Of course, this isn't Hathaway's first shot at life as a blonde. Back in 2013, the actress rocked platinum locks for the punk-themed Met Gala, citing Debbie Harry as her inspiration.

Maddie Ziegler Shakes It Off For A New Capezio Campaign

Maddie Ziegler might be headed for Hollywood, but this new ad serves as a reminder that she's still quite the dancer.

Sia's video sweetheart appears in the newest campaign for dance apparel and accessories brand Capezio, released Tuesday. The clip sees a black-clad Ziegler start moving in line with a bunch of young ballerinas in pink, only to break off into an expressive dance of her own that totally reminds us of Taylor Swift in the "Shake It Off" video -- that is, if Swift was a 13-year-old dance prodigy.

The other dancers are eventually inspired to follow Ziegler's lead, a message she told the Huffington Post she hopes other young dancers will take from the ad, too.

"Self expression in dance has always been so important to me, so I fell in love with the concept of this film," she said. "Hopefully it will remind young dancers everywhere that expressing yourself can be empowering, contagious and fun."

Inspiring, creative or otherwise, we just love getting the chance to see Ziegler dance.

How to Write a Valentine that Woos and Wows -- in 7 Minutes or Less

$

0
Thinking of Valentine's dinner at Chez Expensif, a box of chocolate-infused seaweed and a Tiffany mood ring for your sweetheart?

Or treating your guy to a "home-cooked" meal by candlelight, courtesy of Whole Foods' prepared-foods counter, while you don a lacy red negligee under a slinky black dress ("surprise")?

Sure, this year's take on the trite-yet-trendy Valentine's staples have their appeal, but the thing that will most win your honey's heart is a personal valentine, written from your heart to his (or hers). It will make that dinner extra special and memorable.

Dr. Randy Kamen, author of Behind the Therapy Door, says, "Personal notes and letters have become more and more a rarity in today's world of technology. There is nothing quite as special or meaningful as a handwritten card and a sincere expression of gratitude to a loved one. Research repeatedly shows that such acts of appreciation benefit both the giver and the receiver physically and mentally."

You won't have to think long or hard, either: I've taken last year's 18 minute valentine-creation-process and whittled it down to 6 minutes and 59 seconds -- with fresh ideas and an all-new fill-in-the-blank system that will result in a personal, authentic and melt-the-heart message.

Here goes:

Step 1: Close Your Eyes and Breathe Deeply -- 30 seconds -- If it's going to come from your heart, it's important to take a minute to connect with what's "down there" -- below your clavicle, that is.

Step 2: Get in the Mood -- 30 seconds -- Picture your partner, or even imagine his scent or her voice. Getting in touch helps your creativity flow.

Step 3: Start Simply With Your Honey's Name, "Dear ________," -- 2 seconds -- Sure you can get fancy or cutesy with nicknames if you want to take that risk, but I like to keep it simple.

Step 4: Make a List -- 5 minutes -- Lists are fun and easy; they take off the pressure you may feel to write something profound and they tend to flow with ease. You can list your partner's attributes or special memories you share. Following, you will find a juicy lists of lists to get you started.

Step 5: Enhance -- 55 seconds -- Look it over, using the 3 tips below.

Step 6: Sign Your Name -- 2 seconds -- With love, or simply sign your name -- whatever feels comfortable and right for this stage of your relationship.

A List of Lists: 4 List Ideas to Get You Started

  • "My 3 favorite memories" -- These can be little things -- an act of kindness, something that made you grow closer, something that turned you on.

  • "3 of the best days of my life" -- Are there days together that stand out? Be specific about what made them so special.

  • "10 Things I love about you" -- Include physical characteristics, quirky expressions or habits, talents and personality traits.

  • "5 Things I'd like to do after dinner with you" -- Here's your invitation to get sexy, steamy or sassy.

Or skip the list and start with one of these:

  • "I fell in love with you when..."

  • "I'm better when I'm with you, because..."

  • "You changed my life for the better when you..."

  • "My valentine's fantasy begins with..."

  • "I knew you were the one when..."

A few tips:

Tip #1: Be specific and quirky: If you keep your remarks general, it won't feel personalized. Write about something very specific to your honey.

Tip #2: Feel free to infuse humor: Dr. Craig Malkin, a relationship expert and Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School says, "Humor's a known aphrodisiac. It lights up the pleasure and reward centers of the brain: Funny is sexy."

Tip #3: Use all your senses: Remember the first rule of good writing? 'Show vs. Tell.' When you use more than just the visual sense, the writing will come alive for your reader. It will feel more real and authentic -- and have more impact.

Extra Credit: Make a Homemade Valentine Card

You can purchase a blank card with a beautiful photo or image at your local gift shop or bookstore but if you have the time and inclination, why not demonstrate your devotion by taking an extra 10 or 15 minutes to make a homemade valentine?

Here's how:

Supplies needed: Construction paper, glue, scissors

Optional supplies: newsprint, recycled magazines, photos of you and your beloved, lacy doily, ribbon, watercolor paper and paints, or anything else you care to play with

  1. Take a piece of construction paper. Pink or red is traditional but don't feel boxed in. Any color can work. Fold the paper in half to make the card.

  2. Cut out a heart shape from another color construction paper, a colorful page from a magazine or even a page from a newspaper. If you want, you can glue it to a doily (a paper lace in the shape of a circle).

  3. Glue the doily or the heart to the front of the card.

  4. Optional: add a photo of you and your honey and glue that to the middle of the heart.

  5. Cut out several smaller hearts and glue them around and/or on top of the first heart.

  6. Add additional bling such as sparkle glue, rhinestone stickers, ribbon or lace.

  7. Let it dry.

  8. Once dry, open the card and write your valentine message.

Or make a book out of your writing:

2016-02-06-1454728283-9112663-huffpovalentine.jpg
  1. Paint postcard-sized watercolor paper with a light wash of watercolor paints, varying each card.

  2. Punch 2 or 3 holes along the vertical or horizontal edge in the same position on each card.

  3. Write one item of your list or one memory on each card.

  4. Put a title on the top card "Things I love about you" or "I remember when..."

  5. Tie the cards together with a satin ribbon. Ta-da!

Happy Valentine's Day. Share your tips or ideas as a comment below. What's the loveliest valentine you ever received?

10 Women Who Prove You Can Rock Cleavage Like A Boss At Any Age

Susan Sarandon got some flack for her recent revealing look at the SAG Awards, with TV host Piers Morgan questioning if the bold ensemble was appropriate for presenting an "In Memoriam" tribute. Others were supportive, calling the scrutiny ageism, and applauding the 69-year-old for her body confidence. Whether you loved it or loathed it, one thing can't be disputed: she certainly caught our attention ... and our wandering eyes. Even actress Kate Winslet couldn't keep her eyes (and hands) away from Sarandon's assets.

And she's not the only post-50 celeb to get her cleavage noticed. Cuba Gooding Jr. recently gushed over his "Shadowboxer" co-star, Helen Mirren's, best body part -- her "most beautiful breasts."

All this got us thinking about older women and cleavage. There are people on both sides of the debate -- those who find it distasteful and those who think body confidence at any age is sexy. We're of the latter. Here are some photos to put your doubts to rest.

There Was An Epic Walk-Off At The 'Zoolander 2' Premiere

After an entire year of fashion industry-related press -- closing out the Valentino show in Paris last March, a partnership with Kiehl's, and even thecover of Vogue -- 'Zoolander 2' hit peak fashion moment Tuesday night at the film's premiere with a runway show at Lincoln Center, New York Fashion Week's former hub.

Derek, Hansel, Valentina and Mugatu -- err, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz and Will Ferrell -- each gave their best "blue steel" down a purple runway to open up the evening. Zoolander's Instagram gave shout-outs for the designs to Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and Alexander Wang, as well as Don Atari and Alexanya Atoz, two characters in the new film.

The event, which appeared to be hosted by (who else?) Vogue, also featured runway appearances by Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk, Skrillex and Justin Theroux dressed as his character Evil DJ.

Vogue even got in on the fun, posting a few "walk-off" videos of its own.

At this point, we're not sure if "Zoolander 2" is really a movie as much as it is one big New York Fashion Week kick-off tour.

24 Things Every Person Who Loves A Woman Should Know

$

Loving a woman in a real, true, deep way can be a fantastic adventure, and one that only comes around once in a blue moon.

Knowing how best to show her that love -- whether she's your significant other, best friend, sibling or parent -- can be a heavy task. But it's most definitely worth it.

With all its rewards, loving a woman should be treated as an honor to be earned and a responsibility to handle with great care. With that in mind, and with Valentine's Day just around the corner, we asked our Facebook followers to tell us one thing anyone who loves a woman -- romantically or otherwise -- should know.

According to HuffPost readers, here are 24 things every person who loves a woman should know.

1. Simply listening goes a long way.

2. Don't get caught up in gender roles. Love is love is love -- no matter who goes to work every day or stays at home.

3. You can tell her how important she is to you every day, but if you don't show her she's important, it means nothing.

4. Don't compare her to any one else. She is special and unique, and should be treated as such.

5. Communication is everything. Without it, you're both lost.

6. Understand that she knows what's best for her.

7. Keep your word.

8. Never negate her feelings by calling her "crazy."

9. She can be fragile, just like everyone else. Make sure you're there to catch her in those moments.

10. You don't always need to have a solution to her problems. Simply being there for her is what counts the most.

11. Remember that loving her is a choice you make every single day.

12. Understand what makes her tick. Figure out her passions and join in on them.

13. Always be a loyal friend.

14. Respect her opinion, even when you don't agree with it.

15. Just because she can do it all, doesn't mean she needs to. Help her relax whenever you can by being a source of comfort.

16. Know she deals with insecurities, just like everyone else.

17. Fight her battles with her, not for her.

18. Always give her the freedom to make her own choices, even if you don't agree with them.

19. Be your best self when you're with her, so that she can do the same.

20. The woman she's become is not necessarily the woman she always was.

21. She is your equal. Treat her that way.

22. Always, always, always root for her.

23. Above all be kind to her. Always be kind

24. At the end of the day, every woman is different. She has her own set of needs, wants and goals. Find out what they are and help her achieve them.

Naomi Campbell Wears Basically A Bra And Underwear On The Red Carpet

The "Zoolander 2" premiere in New York City Tuesday night turned out to be the biggest fashion event of 2016 thus far, so of course Naomi Campbell, who appears in the trailer, had to be there.

The supermodel arrived wearing a look from Marc Jacobs' spring 2016 collection that left very little to the imagination.

The gown, which was styled only slightly more covered-up on the runway, was secured with just six closed buttons, exposing Campbell's bra and booty shorts underneath.

She paired the daring outfit with strappy gold sandals and some sparkly jewels, but you were probably too busy staring at the bold look to even notice.

Hey, if you've got it, flaunt it.

6 Men's Style Trends You'll Definitely See In The Future

$

Dark denim, twill chinos, lace-up wingtips and more burgundy. These are the things men will wear in the future -- or as some people call it, the year ahead.

It's the very near future. And while Daft Punk is awesome, we still won't look like something out of Tron anytime soon, according to the algorithm behind Men's Style Lab, an online style concierge. In fact, this year's trends in menswear won't look all that different than they have for the last 20 years.

We asked Derian Baugh, the founder and CEO of Men's Style Lab, to put the company's algorithm to work for HuffPost Lifestyle and tell us what trends will emerge, or stay steady, throughout the year. The company's algorithm uses client data on preferences as varied as their dream cars, best work environments and how they feel about the clothes the company sends them.

According to their data, classic stuff, such as jersey blazers, solid oxford shirts and pants in green, coral and burgundy, is here to stay. So in other words, this year's trends in menswear won't look all that different than they have for the last 20 years.

Why? Ashley Weston, an independent celebrity menswear stylist who has styled Harrison Ford, Jon Hamm and Rob Lowe (and has no connection to Men's Style Lab) told HuffPost that trends in menswear are more static than women's trends. "Menswear trends tend to last longer and take time to evolve a little more," she said.

But something like a huge TV show can disrupt the industry. When 'Mad Men' premiered, she said, there was a "huge push for slim fit suits (especially slim lapels) that lasted years."

"What we still have from that trend is definitely slim tailoring, which is still around and likely not going away anytime soon," she added.

So where are we headed? What are the essential items each guy needs to be well-equipped for 2016?

Here are 6 trends Baugh and his Men's Style Lab algorithm say we'll all see in the next year:

The Song Titles Off Gwen Stefani's New Album Read Like Her Diary

We're going to give it to you straight.

Maybe it's her relationship with fellow "Voice" judge Blake Shelton or their stunt queen-levels of PDA, but we've lost a little faith in Gwen Stefani. Where is the punk-pop goddess we fell in love with?

The one thing that's always kept us rooting for Stefani's success, however, is her immense talent as a performer and songwriter. "Used to Love You," a heartbreaking ballad inspired by the collapse of her marriage to Gavin Rossdale, was a major bright spot in her roller coaster of a year.

Thankfully, Stefani has assuaged our concerns by releasing the full track list for her upcoming album "This Is What the Truth Feels Like..." on Twitter Tuesday night. And by the looks of it, the "No Doubt" singer is baring her soul.

This Is What the Truth Feels Like...

One cannot read track titles like "Misery," "Red Flag" and "Me Without You" without thinking of the cheating rumors surrounding Stefani and Rossdale's breakup and her new romance with Shelton.

"I would consider [the new album] a breakup record," Stefani revealed in a radio interview with San Diego's 93.3 last year, adding, "It just makes me believe in God and my journey. My cross to bear was to go through these heartbreaks and write these songs and help people."

People magazine revealed the cover art for her new album, which will be released March 18.

Despite what you think about Kendall Jenner, the 20-year-old reality star maintains that the fame of her headline-grabbing family actually kind of sucks, at least in terms of helping her modeling career. For that reason, she'd rather they didn't cause a media frenzy at her fashion shows.

Such was the case at the last Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which took place back in November (and aired on TV in December). Kendall was walking in the show for the very first time, but much to her dismay, dad Caitlyn effectively turned the attention away from her and onto herself by publicly announcing she'd be in the crowd.

In the clip above from "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," Kendall snaps at Caitlyn over the phone, cursing at her for stealing the spotlight.

"Did you have your publicist announce that you were going? Because I don't know how everyone knows and now it's a huge story and I'm actually pissed at you," she says, adding, "You're going to take the biggest night of my life and take it away from me?! Thank you." (Complete with a heavy dose of sarcasm.)

But there's a saving grace: "You can come to the f**king after-party," Kendall offers, before again saying, "You can't come."

Tough love.

"Keeping Up with the Kardashians" airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on E!

Every year, I get a slew of emails asking for Valentine's Day gift suggestions. This year, I noticed something a little different, most of the emails highlighted that the woman was a certain "type" of woman. As a result, I decided this year, my gift guide would focus on the appropriate gift for a variety of women, women who are front and center in the world of dating.

Pay attention guys. These are excellent and unique gift ideas!

For a woman who loves Dogs--Buy her a Marc Tetro dog handbag. They are adorable, thoughful and very reasonably priced. Choose a tote or a makeup pouch. She will love it.

For the woman who loves tech items
- Go with a M cushion. This is a stylish pillow that heats up and has a massaging mechanism in it. The bonus, you can get yourself one as well and then the two of you can cuddle up on the couch together on them.

For the woman who has a kid-- It would be super romantic if you show up with a gift for her and then also a gift for her child. She will delight in your thoughtfulness while you earn brownie points with her child. You can choose something like an iDecoz phone sticker set or a rhinestone mirror for her daughter's iphone. Or you can choose a Pirasta gigantic coloring poster like the "What a Colorful World" poster which will provide hours of creativity and learning wrapped into one.

For a woman who loves home decor- You can get her a portable fireplace from Anywhere Fireplaces. This is a very unique and special gift because (a) she probably doesn't one yet and (b) even though it isn't a wood burning fireplace, it still feels romantic.

For a woman who loves beauty products- You can get her a subscription to a monthly beauty box company like GlossyBox. Each month she will get a little present from them with a bunch of new products to try. And the best part of this gift is that each month when her new box arrives, she will think of you.

For a woman who loves experiences- If you are in NY or can make a trip into the Big Apple, take her to Escape The Room. It is a fun interactive game that is actually a mystery puzzle. You figure out clues and solve puzzles so that you can "escape the room." This will get her adrenaline going, which it always a great way to heighten romance.

Cherry Bomb: On Lipstick and Learning to Love My Flaws

I can't hide my teeth.

They're always there, off-white and glossy, playing peekaboo with the world outside my mouth. My lips are a set of French doors with a flimsy lock, popping open with every passing wispy breeze.
I've tried my whole life, but I can't hide my teeth.

Don't get me wrong -- I've got nothing against my teeth, per se. Actually, I'm quite fond of them. I even love the bottom ones that survived five years of braces and still turned out crooked and crowded. They are strong, they are healthy, and they are mine. But they are always there.

Kids in school would tell me I looked stupid because my mouth was always open. It didn't matter that I was creative or smart or kind; it only mattered that I was tall and shy and I couldn't hide my teeth.

I used to clench my jaw and purse my lips in class, but in the end, my teeth always prevailed. My lazy lips were too weak to keep my secrets.

I used to cut out pictures in magazines of models with their mouths agape like fish, girls with crooked enamel and gaps that showed with every half smile caught on camera. I used to tape my favorites to my bedroom wall and admire their beautiful imperfections. I thought that someday, maybe I would learn to see my cupid's bow as more than an annoying mirror of my two front teeth, but as a part of me that could be pretty, too.

I used to tell myself I could never, ever, ever wear lipstick. From the day my mom first let me start wearing makeup and for a decade after, it was sheer peachy pink glosses for me -- never a fuchsia, rarely a red. Lipstick, I was convinced, would just draw attention to my toothy affliction.

A few times in college, I broke my lipstick rule. I tried to wear bright reds to dances and parties, and it would always end in regret. Despite my affinity for makeup, it was always all wrong -- the wrong shade for my skin tone, the wrong finish, the wrong technique. My insecurity and fear of lipstick was written all over my face, and even more obvious in photos that would haunt me long after my makeup had been washed off.

I knew when to admit defeat. I told myself that I was right all along, that lipstick wasn't my thing. I returned to my neutral glosses, focusing instead on lining and blending smoky cat eyes that I knew would draw attention away from my mouth, like I always did. My glasses helped, too, I thought, framing what I believed to be the "right parts" of my face, hiding flaws like the bump on the bridge of my nose and detracting from my impossible lips.

I accepted that I'd never be able to wear lipstick for years, until one Halloween when I knew I'd have to bite the bullet and don a true red to pull off my costume. I read article after article on finding the right red for you, blending colors, and achieving the perfect lip line, determined to get through the night without worry.

Armed with this new knowledge, I went to the drugstore in search of an inexpensive lipstick to try. I bought two different shades and a lip pencil, and I spent an hour trying to make it work. And in the end, it turned out alright. I felt a little uncomfortable wearing something so bold, but I didn't hate it.

I couldn't hide my teeth, but I didn't hate it.

For weeks afterwards, I would practice applying lipstick home alone in the mirror, taking pictures and trying to convince myself that I could make it work. Each attempt felt less foreign and more fun than the last. So I decided it was time to experiment.

I went back to the store, this time in search of something more interesting, more vampy, more me. I picked up a deep, dark burgundy and turned it over to read the words "Cherry Bomb" on the bottom of the tube. It was perfect. I bought a liner to match and went home to test it out. And when I took a step back from the mirror, my lips parted and painted, I knew there was no going back. I felt pretty.

I couldn't hide my teeth, but I felt pretty.

Since then I've stocked up on more red lipsticks than I can count. I've learned that I can sport deep blues and purples. I've put on black and felt more like myself than I ever thought possible. I've tried greens and pinks and oranges and each shade has been a fun new challenge. Now, lipstick doesn't scare me. Now, it empowers me.

I don't try to hide my teeth anymore.
