Four Things I Learned from Living with a Stylist

This is Meaghan. She's a badass stylist, a colleague in the plus industry and my friend.
2016-03-01-1456794286-411441-Bags.jpg

Recently, Meaghan crashed at my Los Angeles apartment while working award show season. Normally, my two-bedroom casa is pretty quiet... but not that week. Jam packed with beauty bloggers in town for a conference, Casa de Sapora was aflutter with electric pink Beauty Blenders, curling wands and lots of clothing. All these extra houseguests meant my darling friend was bunking it up with me in my room.

In the process of our shacking up, and in between and her endless runs back and forth (and back and forth again) to West Hollywood showrooms, I was afforded a glimpse at the inner working of her day. I observed her. I noted her daily behaviors. Like a David Attenborough-narrated National Geographic special.

Cue British-accented voiceover... "And now we see the daily routine of the species Humanis Fashionis Stylistus, living in the wilderness worldwide but often found centrally located in the metropolitan of New York City, Milan or Paris. See how she lives and breaths in utter fashion perfection at every moment of her life!"
Or something like that.

I'm a super casual person. And, though I work in plus fashion, I consider myself to be a behind-the-scenes kinda gal. I'd trade stilettos for cowboy boots any day of the week, I throw my hair in a top knot five of seven days a week. I'd describe my style as comfortable and feminine. Meaghan? She's on the front lines. And, while we have a shared passion for hard work and a common intensity to our professional style, I found that there were some simple yet profound differences in how we conducted our daily lives. These are four of the things I learned from living with a stylist.

1) Your all black outfit doesn't need to be boring. Ever.

Meaghan and I took one day to visit with an array of brands. We both donned the black "uniform" so many industry people adapt. Yet, our looks were FAR from matchy-matchy. I kept my look super simple, with a peasant-inspired dress, cowboy boots and a skinny, faux-snakeskin belt. Meaghan, went full on glam-casual with a black strapless jumper, long vest, and white strappy stiletto sandals. White shoes? After Labor Day? With all black? Ummm yesssahhhhhhhh!

2016-03-01-1456794613-8502171-Mirror.jpg
Meaghan and I taking a standard blogger-mirror selfie. Note her fancy shoes and my... cowboy boots.

The moral of the story? If anyone tells you that wearing all black is boring... they lack vision. No, really. An all-black outfit is a blank canvas for you to paint your own personal style to life. Take 10 women, tell them to wear only black, and I guarantee each one will look unique and rock her own distinctive style. Add pops of color, play with texture and layer it up. An all black outfit will leave you looking chic at any age, any size and any style.

An all black outfit will leave you looking chic at any age, any size and any style.

2) Bold lipstick saves the day.
There wasn't a day on her trip that Meaghan didn't swipe a bold color over her lips. Even the days when she kept her outfit super simple (with kicks and rolled-cuff jeans) and ran out the door faster than a speeding bullet, Meaghan opted for a bold lip. At first I wondered why, but I quickly gleamed it was because the bold lip made her look instantly polished.

Whether she wore a full face of makeup or a simple coat of mascara, a worn-in chambray shirt or Bea Arthur-chic kaftan, her bright red lipstick made people sit up straight and pay attention. "I'm showing up, I'm here, look at me b*tches!" it screamed in the best way possible. Her lipstick of choice (Nars in Dragon Girl) turned any casual outfit into an effortlessly elegant look. Which leads me to the next lesson...

3) Never leave the house without looking polished.
Sometimes I walk the dog in my pajamas. Don't judge me, you probably do it to... The first time Meaghan saw me do this, she stopped in her tracks, raised an eyebrow and said, with equal doses of horror and love. "You're not going out of the house like that, are you?" She questioned. "If you die right now, just remember that's the Ghost Outfit you'll have to spend eternity in."
Ummmmmmok.

There wasn't a moment when we were outside of the house that Meaghan didn't look pulled together. At home? A totally different story; think house muumuu, makeup free and proud. But outside of the confines of the house? Full makeup, full outfit. Every. Single. Day.

As a stylist, Meaghan knows that her clients, and every person she touches during her work day, are looking at HER as an extension of her work. From the publicists handling jewelry pulls to contacts at fashion brands to the friends of her celebrity clientele. For a stylist, your style is essential. And, while it isn't necessary for her to be endlessly glamorous, it is essential for her to have the physical equity that killer style and a strong presentation grants her. I'll make a mental note to remember this as I reach for my pull-on black pants and Ugg sneakers for the second time in a single week.

2016-03-01-1456794689-1935248-Torrid.jpg
Six hours into our day and she's still looking polished with her red lipstick. Me? I look like Bridget Jones got caught in a hurricane.

Lastly...

4) Make the bed every day.
I tend to be a running-behind kind of gal. While I'm never actually late, I end up sacrificing self-care in order to maintain my schedule. I'll forgo breakfast, skip a lengthy grooming process and, even, sometimes, leave the house without making the bed. Not Meaghan. She makes the bed each and every morning.

"When I make the bed, I start the day out in order," she explained. Is this brain science? No, clearly. But what it does is assure you start your day taking a few minutes for yourself. It forces you to put off the email, keep the social media at bay and relish the rituals of self care that so many of us (myself included) forgo. Also, it makes coming home at night after a long day a heck of a lot more appealing!

At the heart of Meaghan's rituals are one distinct theme - take time to take care of you. Just a few minutes.

At the heart of Meaghan's rituals are one distinct theme - take time to take care of you. Just a few minutes. Enough to swipe on a lipstick or throw a more pulled together (yet just as comfy) alternative to sweatpants. Enough to think outside of the box and take a basic black look and pop it to life with snappy accessories... Enough time to make that bed a beautiful haven of pillowy-soft, welcoming comfort to collapse into at the end of a long day!

And, in case you were wondering... Since Meaghan left, I've adapted the bed-making and lipstick. Pry me from those Ugg sneakers? I dare you to try.

He Won't Stop Cheating? Yes, It Is Your Fault!

I know that sounds harsh to blame you for the heartache that has been inflicted upon you by your lover, but it's the truth! 2016-02-29-1456769269-1635809-infidelity1.jpgSometimes the truth is hard to embrace, but if your partner is a perpetual cheater, you must embrace the blame. It is not as if you lined women up in front of him and forced him to choose, but you are at fault because you have not taught him that cheating is unacceptable. You see, the most important lesson you can ever teach your lover is how to treat you!

You teach people in general and your lover specifically how to treat you by what you allow, accept, tolerate, communicate and demand. By not teaching these lessons effectively, you set yourself up for heartbreak and disrespect. Therefore, you have to accept your role as the teacher and realize that you are responsible to set the parameters for what is acceptable and preferred treatment by your partner. When bad behavior first presents itself in a relationship, it is up to you to address it, correct it, embrace it or leave the relationship.

2016-02-29-1456769542-172400-lies.jpgHoping that he will change is always a bad strategy. You do not give anyone multiple opportunities to hurt you. If you have allowed and accepted cheating or any bad behavior from your partner for six months, six years or sixteen years, and then decide after all of that time that you want it to change, IT'S YOUR FAULT. The first time it is shame on your partner; the second, third or fourth time it is shame on you. I know he promises it won't happen again or that it didn't mean anything, but how many times does he have to lie to you before you figure out he is a liar and can't be trusted with your heart?

By accepting cheating or any bad behavior, you teach your partner that hurting you and keeping you in pain is acceptable. The time to correct bad behavior is IMMEDIATELY. away. 2016-02-29-1456769982-8538044-stop.jpgYou have to set the standard and establish the consequences for cheating, or you can simply put a bandage on it and wait for the next time. When you see the first glimmer of a potentially negative behavior, ask yourself if you can live with it for the next forty years. If you cannot live with it, you have three choices: correct it, train yourself to live with it or walk To stay, pray and hope it will change after the pattern is embedded is INSANE.

It's like raising a child - when that child exhibits behavior that is not positive, you lovingly correct them, teach them the right way and set some consequences in place that will teach the child that their behavior will not be tolerated. 2016-02-29-1456770192-3580676-childintimeout.jpgYou reinforce the lesson until it is learned and if they resist the lessons, you reinforce the consequence. You don't wait until your child is thirteen or fourteen to try to correct bad behavior that should have been corrected when they were two. By the time they are teenagers, the behavior is embedded and will be almost impossible to change.

Accept the responsibility of the teacher and decide how you want to be treated. You decide what is acceptable and what is not. Any behavior that does not coincide with how you want to be treated needs to be examined, addressed and rectified.

2016-02-29-1456772535-2470883-stopnow.png
Stop blaming him and instead look at all the ways that you have taught him that it was okay. By your actions you taught him that you would be mad or sad for a while, but it was okay - you would get over it and he could continue to be disrespectful and hurtful because you would accept it. Sure you would be angry and maybe even turn your negative attention toward the other woman, believing that she was the problem instead of him or you, even though he is the one who you are in a relationship with and the one that needs to be instructed on how to treat you. I am always amazed at the men some women fight to hold on to and what they will endure to keep them. It is as if they crave the pain and cannot let go; even though they are embarrassed, hurting, minimized, and disrespected, they remain in the relationship too afraid to stop their own pain.

It is extremely important for you to look very carefully at your actions and how those actions signal to others how to treat you. If you neglect yourself, others will neglect you.2016-02-29-1456770507-761958-teachertip.jpg If you don't make you a priority in your own life, then no one else will make you a priority in theirs. Demand to be treated well and treat others well; set the standard and advocate for yourself. Start by acknowledging your truth and learning to love what you see in the mirror and not comparing yourself to some ideal of beauty that the magazines tell you is worthy of love. Regardless of what some partners may tell you, someone else will want you, and regardless of what your background and life experiences may have taught you, you are worthy of love, support and respect. You are a one-in-a-trillion miracle, unique in all your ways, and you deserve to be treated with the dignity and respect due a rare jewel.

Set a new agenda and demand to be supported and appreciated as a part of the relationship foundation. Set the standard for what you will and will not accept. Let your partner know that you have no tolerance for cheating and make it clear what the consequences are if he does. Don't be so desperate that you will take anything and everything. If you plan to be minimized, neglected, and starved for attention and affection, then accept that kind of treatment from the beginning and train your partner from the start that you will accept being treated poorly and taken for granted.
2016-02-29-1456772392-4781645-teacherswanted.jpg
If you recognize your value, you can teach others to recognize your value as well. It starts by knowing you, knowing what you need to be happy and how to communicate it to your partner. You are your lover's first teacher - a person interested in you watches you, sees how you treat yourself and allow others to treat you. He gathers the information, takes copious notes and then gages his actions and responses accordingly. Create a new normal for your life. Start off being completely you and treating yourself well. If you start a new relationship off by not speaking the truth, giving everything and expecting nothing, then most likely that is the way it will end.

It's time to establish new relationship habits that will nourish you. Habits that you can live with and rely on for the next twenty, thirty or forty years. Carefully craft your lessons and teach your partner what you expect, what will be a deal breaker and most importantly how to love you in a way that is meaningful to you.

When it comes to relationships, choosing whether to go or to stay is a hard decision for most. The decision is coupled with love and pain and is agonizingly difficult to make. Each person must do what is best for them, regardless of the opinions of the people around them. The decisions that you have to make are yours and yours alone and so is the blame, fault and the resolution.

If you are tired of hurting and want a different type of relationship, visit www.JaniceMoss.com for books, articles, blogs and resources that can help you stop hurting.

Until then, love yourself totally and completely.

A New March: Wearing Irish

$

I enjoy fashion. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of social media for brand building. And I'm Irish. This March, I'm combining all three passions in an effort to showcase Irish fashion. And I invite you to join me on this pilot.
2016-02-28-1456690354-8448255-ScreenShot20160227at6.39.32PM.png
March is a special month to shine a light on all things Irish. No other country in the world owns a month. I'm aiming to put a spotlight on Irish designers by wearing Irish fashion, jewelry and accessory brands in the run up to Saint Patrick's Day. I plan to post a picture daily on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #WearingIrish. I'm inviting everyone to join in.

Build awareness:

I recently set out to buy a few items of Irish fashion and I was astounded by what I learned. The creativity of many Irish fashion designers is breathtaking. The quality of the product is often world class. The variety is unexpectedly great. But the biggest revelation of my personal hunt was that the awareness of modern Irish fashion brands and the Irish fashion industry as a whole is very low, even among people who love fashion. This is a pity.

Start a pilot, imagine a movement:

I see an opportunity for everyone who is both a fan of fashion and a fan of Ireland to come together, using social media, to support Irish designers. Imagine the possibilities if all fans use our influence to spread the word by posting the pictures that show how wearing Irish fashion is a choice we are making. My vision is to make this 2016 pilot a broad movement in the coming years with women and men globally wearing Irish and posting pictures in March.

Join once or join often:

Now is the chance to demonstrate your love of fashion and your appreciation of Irish design. Wear Irish in March and post your pictures on your preferred platform Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using hashtag #WearingIrish. Commit to posting once or many times during the month. Dress head-to-toe in Irish fashion or pick one item or accessory to celebrate. Go casual, work wear, party, occasion, traditional or contemporary. The idea is that you are wearing Irish without compromising your style.

Be a role model:

While some people are fashion models, we can all be role models. Channel your inner stylist. It's about real people making wearing Irish fashion work in real ways. And if you can't join, please consider spreading the word about #WearingIrish by amplifying the initiative on social media. A tweet, a like, a comment are great contributions. Once March is over, I'll report back the lessons from this pilot in another post.

Japanese Inventor Creates Self-Defense Wig For Donald Trump

A Japanese inventor has created something for Donald Trump that can only be described as "yuge."

The so-called "guard wig" is a blond toupee that can be used to cover the head for warmth or as a weapon against assassins, attackers or political rivals.

That's because the wacky wig contains metal and a coiled strap inside. Hold one end of the strap and fling it at the object of your irritation, RocketNews24.com.

The "guard wig" is the brainchild of 87-year-old Yoshiro Nakamatsu. He claims he's invented the floppy disk -- a claim disputed by IBM -- as well as the CD, the DVD, the karaoke machine, a water-powered engine, the world’s tiniest air conditioner and a pillow that prevents drivers from nodding off behind the wheel, according to Smithsonian magazine.

Oh, and we can't forget the perpetual motion machine that runs on heat and cosmic energy.

But Nakamatsu is saving his greatest invention for the man who wants to make America great again: The Donald.

Nakamatsu unveiled the "guard wig" on Saturday at a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Tokyo.

During the conference, Nakamatsu showed two diagrams from his patent to show how the "guard wig" works.

The "guard wig" might seem practical for a man whose campaign slogan is more aptly described as "Make America hate again," but, chances are, Trump won't take advantage of this wonderful example of technology.

Trump insists his bizarre combover is his real hair -- not a wig -- and has even invited random citizens to tug on his hair to prove it's real, according to CNN.

Nakamatsu's complete press conference -- all 47 minutes of it -- can be seen below. It's in Japanese with English subtitles.

Hell Must Have Frozen Over Because There's Going To Be A 'High School Musical 4'

$

In completely unrelated news, Zac Efron has fled to a deserted island off the coast of Thailand never to be heard from again.

For those who were betting on (wink) a fourth "High School Musical" movie now is your time to collect because on Tuesday, Disney Channel announced that the Wildcats will live again. Not in your nightmares, but on TV.

"High School Musical is part of Disney Channel’s DNA. It embodies all that we stand for," Disney Channel president Gary Marsh said in a statement. "As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we're excited to announce 'the start of something new' -- as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the 'High School Musical' franchise."

By start of something new he means the (re)start of a series that should have never survived after its first installment, right? Just checking.

According to the press release, the fourth movie will introduce a whole new set of singing, sports-playing East High Wildcats, as well as members of their rival school, the West High Knights.

We know, the dramatic tension is palpable.

All of the "HSM" OGs are unlikely to return (see Efron and deserted island above), but who knows what Ashley Tisdale is up to these days. Casting will begin soon, but there is no definite premiere date.

Yet ... dun, dun, dun

On Sale Time

$
0
0
It's that time of the year when every store has magical stickers on its windows saying: SALE. And it would look odd and irrelevant if you hear me saying: Beware of sales! Don't get me wrong, although they're amazing, as any item out of our price range can suddenly become affordable, they can lure us into buying anything just because its price is low.

How many times have I watched helplessly friends grabbing an umpteenth grey cashmere cardigan, or a dress that they wouldn't wear in a million years, just because its label says, "discount 50-60-70%!" I try to dissuade them, but they wouldn't listen, heavily concentrated to reach first the rail, and pile on their arms small size tops, large trousers or even furry hats that Dubai weather won't allow them to wear!

And the usual sentences around coffee after quenching the thirst for great finds at great prices, evaluating the buys and assessing the damages with loads of bags spread around "Maybe I shouldn't have...", "I have the same color..." "I'll lose weight, it'll fit me...".

I hate to say "I told you," but I did! Before raiding stores on sale, a closet check is a must, to take note of what is needed, memorize visually what we have and know our priorities. Simple, really. Don't we all avoid going to supermarket when we're hungry? It's so tempting to bite into that chocolate bar, sneak a biscuit... The same goes for our shopping spree during sale time. We surely can avoid impulsive and unnecessary buys, and definitely make good and clever ones if we only controlled our shopping frenzy and calmed down our illusions of making great deals everywhere we can read SALE.

It doesn't take much to make the best out of the sale season. Shopping on weekdays, preferably during the day time to avoid crowd is a good start.

Another major point is to set your budget and stick to it. Don't be tempted by a price tag. This truly is the golden rule -- only ever buy an item if it is a style that truly flatters you. It may have 50% off, but it is not an investment piece if it just sits in the bottom of your wardrobe never to be worn.

If you stick to the staple pieces, you can't go wrong. Invest in timeless, well-cut dresses, jackets and trousers, without any obvious references to current trends. You'll then be able to wear them season after season.

If the thought of maddening crowd in malls makes you quake with fear, do the sensible thing and shop from home. Just make sure you assess properly the sizes, usually all sites accept returns. It's worth it if you cannot face sales in real stores.

Now, when heading for the "battle field" the right gear makes it or breaks it. Wear sensible shoes and an easy top and bottom to put on and remove throughout your various visits to the fitting room. A crossbody is the right handbag to carry as it leaves both hands free. And don't forget to drink water, we don't want to get dehydrated in the midst of the mission!

It can be tempting to abuse your credit card during sale time, arguing that you won't shop for the next few months, but you don't want to spend more than you can actually afford. Generally financial experts say that you should budget around five percent of your take-home pay for apparel. Try and stick to this percentage to avoid post-shopping regret!
Easier said than done... but don't say nobody told you!

What Is Cold Cream Anyway, And Is It Good For Your Skin?

"Beauty Glossary" is a HuffPost series that breaks down beauty products, techniques, treatments and ingredients so you know exactly what you're putting onto and into your body.

Watching our grandmothers, mothers, aunts and sisters apply cold cream to their faces is one of our most memorable childhood experiences. The simple act of scooping the cool-to-the-touch product out of a jar and smoothing it on was magical, especially when you consider how incredibly soft it made their skin.

Our fascination with cold cream is also because of its many unconventional uses. HuffPost readers have confessed to utilizing it as foundation primer, shaving cream, lip balm, body lotion and makeup remover. Yet, we weren't sure about the ingredients in cold cream and exactly how they work, so we turned to acclaimed dermatological surgeon Patricia Wexler for the answers.

Cold cream has been around for much longer than we assumed -- its invention is widely credited to second-century Greek physician and philosopher Galen

"Coldcream is an emulsion of water in oil, usually in beeswax and various fragrances," says Wexler. "This is unlike the typical 'oil in water,' which disappears when applied to the skin. The name comes from the cold feeling the cream leaves on the skin on application."

Wexler says that cold creams generally consist of four main ingredients: water, oil, emulsifier and a thickening agent. The amount of water and oil is approximately in equal proportions, allowing the cream to penetrate the outer layer of skin well.

Various fragrances such as almond, violet or rose are added to cold cream, depending on the application. Wexler notes that modern-day cold creams often replace beeswax and olive oil with mineral and jojoba oils. And they'll contain additional ingredients like borax (to whiten) and glycerin (to hydrate).

Wexler believes cold creams do help to moisturize dry, itchy skin. Think rough elbows, knees and sunburned or chapped lips. "The cool application is very helpful especially, when the dryness is very uncomfortable," she says.

However, the dermatologist admits that cold creams aren't "cosmetically elegant." She adds, "If you are not prone to acne and do not mind the 'greasy element,' the benefit of the very smooth, moist skin is worth it."

If you're looking for a great cold cream, Wexler's top two picks are: Weleda Cold Cream because it "let's skin breathe," thanks to the use of beeswax instead of mineral oil or petrolatum. Not to mention, it's formulated with sweet almond oil, which softens and soothes. And Avène ColdCream, for its "ultra-rich barrier repair" and thermal spring water that helps protect it from environment aggressors like the sun and wind.

Are you a fan of cold cream? Tell us how you use this old-school beauty staple in the comments section .

Maternity fashion doesn't always elicit images of body-con dresses, denim cut-offs and chic off-the-shoulder tops, but there's reasons it shouldn't. Over the past few years, pregnancy clothes have gotten much more fashionable and more moms-to-be are having dressing their bumps.

To get a little inspiration, we turned to some very stylish mamas (or soon-to-be-mamas) to find out how they are turning maternity style on its head. These ladies have some of the best outfits we've ever seen -- pregnant or not.

11 Middle-Aged Women Strip Down To Reclaim 'Sexy' On Their Own Terms

Warning: This post contains erotic imagery and may not be suitable for work environments.

Sometimes, to be a woman over 50 is to feel invisible. It's walking into a bar or restaurant and no longer being on the receiving end of an admiring glance. It's feeling like people on the street are looking past you, as if you aren't even there. Ask a middle-aged woman, and she might say these slights have whittled away at her self-confidence, tricking her into believing the best years are behind her.

We live in a culture that often equates beauty and energy with youth. But we'd like to turn that way of thinking on its head. We believe women can be smart and sassy, beautiful and confident -- and that they can continue to shake things up in the world around them -- whether they're 50 or 75 or 100.

With that idea in mind, Huff/Post50 photographed 11 very sexy women between the ages of 48 and 67. A few are cancer survivors. A few are grandmothers. A few are single and a few are married. But what they all have in common is that not one is a shrinking violet. They feel better about themselves today than they ever have. We asked each woman to wear whatever makes them feel sexy, and to talk about what being sexy means to them now compared to when they were, say, 21. The resulting photos are stunning -- and entirely un-retouched.

Here's What The Original Buffy Has Been Up To Since Starring In The Cult Classic

In 1992, it seemed as if only one woman would ever be known as Buffy the vampire slayer: Kristy Swanson.

Swanson starred in the cult film five years before the spinoff TV series debuted with a different actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Back then, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" became a film favorite among audiences and to this day remains one of Swanson's most recognizable roles. But, as the 46-year-old tells "Oprah: Where Are They Now?", she's actually had quite a bit going on since those early days of her career.

Film Work

In her post-Buffy days, Swanson appeared in various films, including "The Chase," "Big Daddy" and "Dude, Where's My Car?" She's certainly played characters that audiences develop crushes on, and even her Ashton Kutcher costar was a bit star-struck when she played his love interest in "Dude…"

"He was very smitten and very funny and very, kind of, geeking out a little bit," Swanson recalls. "He goes, 'You don't understand… You were, like, my high school crush, and now I'm kissing you and I can't believe it.' It was really, really, very sweet and adorable."

Swanson continues to act in both film and television, and says she has embraced her transition from young star into more mature roles.

"I love the fact that I can go from being a child actor and ... now I'm the one playing the mom in the movies," she says. "I get to work with kids, and I know what they're going through on the set every day. I can be there for them as a mentor and a friend and someone to help them, because I know how they feel."

A mother herself, Swanson enjoys offering guidance to child actors to help them grow.

"It's really, really fun to be able to do that role for myself, full circle," she says.

Getting into Golf Fashion

Today, Swanson focuses much of her time on a collection of ladies golf wear she launched in 2014 after one of her own unorthodox outfits on the green sparked a lot of intrigue.

"I was at the Bill Murray/Murray Bros. Caddyshack Tournament one year and I was struggling with what to wear. I grabbed this dress out of my closet and I thought, 'Oh, I'm going to wear this on the golf course," Swanson says. "Everybody went crazy for this dress that I was wearing -- men and women."

So, she approached the designer with the idea for a private label. aDRESSitGOLF was born.

"I'm not a fashion guru and I'm not one that sits there and sews clothing or anything," Swanson says with a laugh. "But I stumbled into this fashion line that I thought was a really great idea and something that was needed in the women's golf world."

Though she's no longer the 22-year-old she was when she played Buffy, Swanson says she's fundamentally no different than she was in those days.

"I'm kind of the same person I was back then, as far as my morals and my values and everything that I stand for," she says. "I've just gone through different life experiences."

"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

6 Women Share The Many Beautiful Ways To #AgeWisely

A beauty company's ad about aging refreshingly takes the focus off makeup and appearance and puts the spotlight on genuine wisdom from women.

For its #AgeWisely campaign promoting its "Timeless" collection of beauty products, Living Proof asked six middle-aged women about their pasts and gave them a chance to pass along life lessons they've learned over the years. The ad, which lines up with the company's dedication to "rethinking conventional wisdom," features advice regarding love, friendship and the important people in their lives.

One woman appreciated that her mother was "always pushing [her] to do more" growing up, while another said she valued her friendships, noting that "absolutely incredible opportunities have happened because of that."

Living Proof has also celebrated the women's stories with black-and-white photos on social media.

In an Instagram post from Feb. 29, a woman named Alexandra shared the risk she took after marrying someone without her family's support. Despite the obstacle, she had some valuable advice to offer.

"I've been happily married for 27 years," the caption reads. "My best piece of advice? Follow your heart and you won't be let down."

What Every Rosacea Sufferer Needs To Know About Facial Veins & Laser Surgery

$

2016-03-01-1456795285-3609480-FacialTreatment.jpeg

I am one of the fourteen million men and women who suffer from rosacea. Sure, in the grand scheme of life it could be worse. But when you have a condition on your face the entire world can see that flares up, goes into remission, only to come back again, your self-esteem can get a bit beat up to put it mildly.

I have been suffering from rosacea and dilated facial veins, also known as telangiectasia, since my early twenties. I have tried everything under the sun to address it from acupuncture, diet change, and lasers of all types.

Several years ago I was introduced to Eric Bernstein M.D., M.S.E., Director of the Main Line Center for Laser Surgery located in Ardmore, Pennsylvania after being badly burned and scarred by a doctor who I had seen for several years prior without incident. I am not sure how I did not find Dr. Bernstein sooner. But, I am glad that I did. At forty years of age, honestly my skin has never looked better. Sadly, my story of what landed me in his office is one too often heard by Dr. Bernstein and his staff.

What rosacea sufferers need to know is that the responsibility ultimately lies in their hands to do the research in terms of the credentials of who performs the surgery. Unfortunately, without being fulling informed it is impossible to make a solid decision.

2016-03-01-1456795494-9113594-bernwsciencepiconcomputercopy.jpg

Dr. Bernstein, a rosacea sufferer himself, is one of the world's preeminent authorities on sun induced skin damage, laser medicine, laser surgery, and rosacea treatment, and generously shared his thoughts on the condition for those considering laser surgery.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by flushing and blushing due to the appearance of veins in sun-exposed areas of the body like the face, neck, chest, and can affect both men and women. The condition typically affects light-skinned individuals in their 20's & 30's, although depending on one's genetic make-up may develop earlier or later in one's life and is often accompanied by acne, general redness and dilated capillaries.

The sun is the major culprit in creating the extra facial veins that result in the flushing of predisposed rosacea sufferers. These extra veins, which don't serve any function, fill up with blood more rapidly then other veins due to stimuli like exercise, coffee, saunas, alcohol, spicy foods, sun exposure and many of the other triggers that can be impossible to avoid. Laser surgery is the only way to destroy these veins, which the body then digests through the healing process.

What kind of credentials should one have to operate and perform laser surgery?

2016-03-01-1456795726-3162894-drblaserpdlhirescopy.jpg

Excellent question, says Dr. Bernstein. Who's behind the laser? I equate this to a driver's license, which is the minimum requirement for someone to drive. But, the license doesn't mean that person is a good driver. My stance is that only medical professionals including doctors, physician assistants and registered nurses should operate facial lasers. And if it is a R.N., that there is on-site supervision so if there is a problem that the doctor can respond quickly and efficiently. On-site supervision means just that. If a laser surgery center claims to have a supervising doctor who is actually based in another state that is not supervision.

Furthermore, just because you are doctor does not mean that you will inherently be a great laser surgeon. I have seen patients badly scarred and burned by doctors. On the flip side, in my office our R.N. performs the laser hair removal. I still meet with every client first and supervise the treatments, but we are always learning from one another.

What type of lasers do you think are the most effective at ridding one of general facial redness and dilated facial veins?

There are two lasers that I find extremely effective for treating both diffuse redness and facial veins. First, the Perfecta Laser by Candela, which is a pulsed-dye laser that is fantastic for removing linear spider veins as well as diffuse redness and also reduces enlarged pores and sagging skin. I had the first Perfecta laser in the country and have published extensively on its use for the treatment of rosacea, spider veins of the lower extremities, port-wine stains, scars, and facial rejuvenation. Second, the Excel-V Laser by Cutera, which is a dual wavelength laser offering versatility to the operator to effectively treat spider veins on the face without damaging the surrounding skin.

Even after a single laser treatment, patients will see a significant improvement although a series of 2-4 treatments are necessary to remove virtually all of the veins to help keep them away for extended periods of time.

2016-03-01-1456796378-3400614-laserroom23hirescopy.jpg

Whether people need further treatments once most of the veins have been removed is strictly a function of continued sun-exposure. Since sun exposure is the leading cause for the body to create these unwanted veins the daily use of sunscreen and installing a UV-blocking window film for the car since most sun exposure occurs while we are in our vehicles are crucial for prolonging the need for further laser treatments to maintain improvement.

Are there specific types of lasers that are not appropriate to treat facial veins with?

2016-03-02-1456928974-4309504-laserstoom1hires.jpeg

I don't use IPL lasers for facial veins. In my opinion, IPL is great for removing pigment, but it takes away the good and bad pigment. IPL's are essentially a strobe light with a filter. Since it lets in lots of different wave lengths of light it is much more difficult to predict the outcome versus a laser that incorporates one or two wavelengths. I see more patients come into this office with adverse reactions from IPL treatments then any other laser.

Since there is not a lot of recourse for laser mishaps, what should a patient do when they get a adverse reaction as a result of laser surgery?

Great question. Anyone can get an adverse reaction to laser surgery. We as doctors are always walking a fine line treating patients trying to achieve a great result without causing any damage. The first thing I would do is to call the treating physician right away to discuss your concerns and see what they think. I give my patients my cell phone number, which is unusual, but I make myself available as you know to discuss any concerns right away. If you are not confident with the physician who treated you then you need to find someone that you are comfortable with.

How do you suggest patients find doctors with expertise in laser surgery to treat veins and diffuse redness?

I would suggest that any patient researching a doctor to perform laser surgery check with their friends and family to see which doctors they have had success with or ask both dermatologists and facial plastic surgeons who they would use themselves or recommend. Patients can also call the major manufacturers of the lasers and ask them who their top doctors are in their region.

Kendall Jenner truly is living the dream.

Not only is she on top of the fashion world, she's also on a hit reality series and, well, extremely rich. In addition to all that, she has a loving sister (Kim Kardashian) who will bring her McDonald's on set while she's working the camera in a miniskirt, thigh-high boots and nothing else.

How do we know all this? Well, thanks to Vogue's latest video, for which the magazine spent a day in the life of Jenner during New York Fashion Week, we get to see that exact scenario play out.

In the two-and-a-half minute clip, the 20-year-old also indulges in a pancake breakfast in bed, puts on a private closet fashion show with BFF Gigi Hadid and shaves her legs in the back of a cab. All in a day's work.

Elegant Oscars Give Us Everyday Hairstyles

$

Kudos for all the beautiful hair at the Oscars, continuing a trend from the Grammys with cuts and colors moving to the forefront of fashion on stage with a lot of natural, but finished and modern looks that could easily be worn for everyday styles on the streets now.

Nearly anything at these recent, pinnacle events could be duplicated at home with simple hair bands, bobby pins, flat iron and a blow dryer. Even on the go, many of these styles work particularly well moving from work to evening party.

We've seen a lot of action lately in the red colors, which have been moving toward the warm coppery tones. At the recent Grammys, fearless Lady Gaga wore her hair orange-red for her tribute to David Bowie. Two weeks later at the Oscars she's back to blonde. Others, meanwhile, fueled the trend toward coppery reds including Sophie Turner, Julianne Moore and Amy Poehler.

Jennifer Lawrence stood out in my mind. She has been a few different shades in her career from rich browns with longer soft waves to the blonde lob, and the longer A-line bob like the one she wore at the Oscars. Bobs and lobs remain strong trends, in part because they can be done in so many styles. There is no 'one' bob.

Charlize Theron walked the red carpet with a classic asymmetrical cut, a very sophisticated look and so dramatic. Sofia Vergara went with a sleek finish with her hair pulled back tight and a center part and dark, dark, dark! This was very different from the softer cuts and colors she's worn with recently.

It was great to see Andra Day with her beautiful face and spirit at the Grammys and then the Oscars where she wore her hair in soft finger waves with one side tucked behind her ear for a 1940s flare, one of my favorite retro looks. Day does this period style really well.

Cate Blanchett went with a shorter bob than typical for her, just hitting below the ear with one side swept behind the ear. Rooney Mara went with a very tight slick-back knot for a more dramatic, severe appearance, but one that was fitting for her overall look. Reese Witherspoon looked amazing, effortlessly so. Her hair seemed longer than I have seen it in a while with very soft waves she looked so beautiful.

Can This New Industry Disrupt Fast Fashion?

2016-03-02-1456888333-1930258-SPM_6fd4d2f8677c4dfa8cbe50a67bdeae86.jpg

Americans love clothes. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American household spends $1,700 annually on clothes. Fashion is accessible, heavily marketed, and increasingly affordable.

In the mid-2000s, a subset of the industry called "Fast Fashion" completely disrupted the market. Companies like H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 branded themselves as Fast Fashion companies capable of taking styles from the catwalk to mainstream production in just a few months. This rapid turnaround and the volume of styles they could produce undercut the more established retailers like Macy's and JCPenney.

Today, a new industry is emerging--one that Roman Kirsch calls "Agile Retail." Kirsch, the founder and CEO of Berlin-based fashion retailer Lesara who was recently named to Forbes 30 Under 30 list, says that the next generation of fashion companies will make the leap to 100-percent online sales, rely on smart data to target new styles, and do all of their production and distribution in-house.

H&M's stock price has fallen substantially in the last year, and they recently announced a greater emphasis on Internet sales--perhaps a signal that they, too, realize Agile Retail may be the next big thing.

I sat down with Kirsch to discuss Agile Retail and the future of the fashion industry.

What is Agile Retail? How will it change the retail industry?

Kirsch: Agile Retail is about utilizing smart data to find what trends are popular with consumers at this very moment, and the ability to react to that information instantly with a seamless, integrated supply chain. It is really the next inevitable step for fashion retail in the Internet age. It supplies consumers with more options that they can purchase for less, and have shipped to their front door faster than ever before.

What's the difference between Agile Retail and Fast Fashion?

Kirsch: The two most important differences are that Agile Retail is faster and smarter than Fast Fashion.

  • Shorter production cycle: H&M needs two to three months from design to market; Lesara needs about 10 days until a new style is available for purchase online.

  • Zara is a leader in the Fast Fashion industry, producing 11,000 new items each year. Lesara is two years old and produces 50,000 new items each year.

  • Zara delivers new styles to its stores twice a week. Agile Retail companies launch new styles every single day.

  • Agile Retail companies focus on the data. They know what consumers want and only

  • produce what is going to fly off the shelves. This cuts down on losses from overproducing styles that flop.

What will the fashion shopping experience look like in five years?

Kirsch: Mobile commerce is becoming more and more important. People will conduct 80 percent or more of all transactions via mobile applications. But perhaps more importantly, companies will increasingly utilize data-based research to develop a level of understanding about consumers that we haven't seen before. Machine-learning algorithms will lead to improved relevancy and personalization, and help tech-driven retailers to curate better products. Products will be online before consumers know that they need and want them.

With trends moving faster than ever, do you think slow-moving retail giants like Macy's and JCPenney will survive?

Kirsch: These companies may survive, but they will not be recognizable if they do. Why would consumers go to a store to purchase styles that are six or nine months old? Today you can go online and choose from a larger selection at a lower price, and that is going to become an increasingly popular way to shop for clothes.

How does Lesara know which trends to target? And how will trend targeting change in the next five years?

Kirsch: Lesara doesn't rely on subjective trend forecasting like other fashion companies do. With super-short production cycles and data-based knowledge, we produce trends and items people are searching for right now. We use multiple sources of data, from own website data to third-party data and even social media, to forecast what styles will begin trending. With more data and constant A/B-testing of new merchandise, our prediction accuracy consistently improves over time.

Online shopping still struggles to compete with store locations. How will that change?

Kirsch: Online shopping is already a more convenient and efficient way to buy clothes. Those differentiating factors will only increase with time. In particular:

  • Your online shopping is more customized, because your preferences and profile are recognized. Customer engagement is far superior, as your browsing tendencies can be learned and re-targeted with advertisements and discounts.

  • Operation costs are lower in terms of storage, logistics, rent, etc. Those savings are reflected in retail prices.

  • Selection will always be wider, not restricted by what can be held at any particular store. Consumers are ordering directly from the warehouse, not buying a piece of clothing that has been tried on by a dozen other people. Shopping online is a better way to be inspired and educated about new trends.

  • Consumers can be presented with information in numerous channels that assist them in making more informed selections.

These benefits are being reflected in global sales trends. Online revenues continue to grow at 20 percent every year, globally, while offline retail sales are forecasted to be flat.
