Brilliant Hospital Gowns Help Teen Patients Feel Like Themselves

$

For hospitalized teens, wearing the same drab gown day after day can be not only boring but seriously dehumanizing.

That’s why Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada came up with the simple but brilliant idea to create hospital gowns that teens would actually want to wear. The recently launched WARD + ROBES program allows each teen to pick out a gown that suits them, allowing them to feel less like a patient and more like the unique individuals they are.

“When you can’t wear what you want, you feel like you’re not who you should be, or you’re just your illness or you’re just ... a hospital patient,” a teen says in a video produced by the foundation.

In the video, the foundation presents the unique gowns to a group of teens at the hospital ― and when each patient finds one that suits their personal style, their eyes light up.

I was amazed to watch the teens walk in in their standard issue gowns and get super excited that they could go to this rack of robes and pick something that felt more like them,” Trevor Dicaire, senior vice president of development at Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada, told Upworthy.

To create a wide range of designs to fit each patient’s style, the foundation enlisted the help of creatives including fashion designer Izzy Camilleri and tattoo artist India Amara. And now that the program is up and running, the foundation is inviting anyone to submit a design.

The gowns shown in the video range from simple to elaborate, with patterns and materials such as camouflage, animal print and lace.

Each gown includes a tag with a very important message: “You’re unique. Why should your gown be any different?”

If you want to donate to the program, you can do so here.

Pippa Middleton And James Matthews Are Engaged

Congratulations are in order for Pippa Middleton and her new fiancée, James Matthews!

The couple announced their engagement Tuesday, much to the delight of fans and royal enthusiasts the world over who are likely counting the days until they get to see Duchess Kate in a bridesmaid gown.

The Press Association’s royal reporter Twitter account announced that the couple will be wed in 2017. It also reports that Pippa’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, are “absolutely thrilled,” and that her sister (the former Kate Middleton) and brother-in-law Prince William are “absolutely delighted” to hear the news.

Middleton stepped out in London on Tuesday sporting the gorgeous ring on her finger, which Matthews, a hedge-fund manager, reportedly proposed with during a trip to England’s Lake District:

The pair has been back together for about a year, but had previously been on and off since 2012, when they were first spotted out together.

Of course, their upcoming nuptials won’t be quite as big of a spectacle as her sister’s 2011 ceremony, but we have a feeling it will be equally as filled with love, excitement and of course, couture.

Take a look at some photos of the happy couple below and excuse us while we daydream about the ceremony for the rest of the day.

We Need To Talk About The Hats At The Republican National Convention

It’s been just one day since the Republican National Convention kicked off in Cleveland, and already there has been nudity, alleged plagiarism and a “Duck Dynasty” appearance.

But while the cast of characters somewhat changes from convention to convention, there is one glimmering, hopeful constant in the whole thing: absurd hats.

Year after year, convention-goers of both democratic and republican persuasion put their best hats forward to support their party and bring a festive flair to the event.

As Harry Rubenstein of The Smithsonian Institution recently told MSNBC, the practice “grew out of a tradition of hat-wearing delegates adding a button or flag to their headwear until they became elaborate works of art drawing media attention,” but says these days it’s more about attendees who want “more attention from the camera crews.”

Naturally, people pulled out all the stops this time around, sporting cowboy hats, elephant hats, plenty of americana and more.

Take a look at some of the best (and worst) toppers below.

The week-long event, which wrapped up in Miami Beach on Tuesday, boasted events, parties, runway shows and of course, a lot of swimsuits.

As usual, there were the super sexy looks only for the boldest of beach goers. There was also a bridal bathing suit, complete with a veil and a structured number, which is giving us all kinds of tan line nightmare vibes (to name a few).

Check out our picks for the 12 least wearable looks below.

Kat Von D Ends Friendship With 'Bully' Jeffree Star On Social Media

Social media is a hellscape lately.

First there was the Taylor Swift vs. Kim and Kanye debacle, and now there’s this.

Tattoo artist and makeup entrepreneur Kat Von D has publicly “disassociated” herself with longtime friend, singer-songwriter and makeup artist Jeffree Star.

The 34-year-old Von D posted a photo of Star on her Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter on Tuesday with a red “banned” insignia across his face. She cryptically said in the caption of the post that “after years of making excuses for, and rationalizing Jeffree’s inappropriate behavior (including, promoting drug use, racism, and bullying),” she couldn’t continue being friends with him after “recent events.”

The post indicated that she’ll explain her reasons for dropping the friendship with Star in more depth in an upcoming video. She will also be pulling the popular hot pink shade “Jeffree” from her makeup line, Kat Von D Beauty.

Star took the situation a step further and addressed Von D’s posts on his Twitter. He fired off a series of tweets about the issue, one of which indicated that Von D “never supported me or my brand and got distant when I launched mine.”

As if the plot could thicken any more, Kat Von D shot back her own response to Star’s tirade.

Drama, drama, drama. Can’t we all just swipe on another coat of lipstick and get along?

The Keeper Of The Curls

$

When I was pregnant with our second child I wanted a little girl so badly that I felt guilty. Our first born was a son and I longed for a baby girl I could put ribbons and lace on. I dreamed about what she would look like. In my dreams she had big blue eyes and black, curly hair.

This was before the days when they routinely did ultra-sounds so we had no idea if we were having a girl or a boy. When she was born in 1984 we were thrilled to have a daughter. Her eyes were blue (but they didn't stay that way). Her hair was very dark, but not black, and it definitely wasn't curly.

Did I care? Of course not. She was perfect.

My Childhood

My mother didn't get a little girl with curls either. My hair was "straight as a stick," as she was fond of saying. Mom worked and worked to get my straight hair to curl. I remember lots of stinky perms and hours with burning goop on my head. It made my hair fuzzy most of the time and curly some of the time, but it was expensive, time consuming and smelled worse than a skunk.

My daughter only had one perm before I gave up on the curls. I didn't give up on hair ribbons though. I loved bows and would fasten them to her silky hair-only to watch them slide out within minutes. Her hair was simply too fine to hold a ribbon in place.

Hair Experiments

Over the years I have watched my daughter experiment with her hair (just like I did). Over the years she's bleached her hair (I did mine too) and highlighted it with assorted colors.

Hair is just hair and if she wants to shave her head or die her hair purple, she has every right to. But if you ask me when her hair is the most beautiful, I would answer that I like it best when it's her natural color.

My Daughter's Daughter

When my granddaughter was born she didn't have a lot of hair but by the time she was 8 months old I could tell it was going to be curly. I was so excited! It took awhile but her hair eventually got thicker and long enough to curl and now it's in ringlets.

Besides having curly hair she loves wearing hair bows. My daughter bought her an assortment of them in every color of the rainbow. Some of them are so big they almost dwarf her little head, but she wears them proudly and patiently.

Four Years Later

My granddaughter is 4-years-old now and the other day my daughter took a picture of her daughter's curls. She shared the picture on Facebook and talked about how precious those curly locks are to her.

2016-07-17-1468791856-752442-curls.jpg

I agree. They are gorgeous, but I couldn't help but smile a knowing smile. No matter how beautiful her hair is now -- one day she will want to change it.

I also know without a doubt that my other granddaughters will do the same. The oldest (almost 11), already straightens her beautiful curls. The next granddaughter has straight hair and I'm sure will try to curl hers. And the baby granddaughter is only a few months old and still working on growing hair.

My friend, Laura, had some great advice for my daughter about girls and their curls that she shared.

"Your daughter has gorgeous hair ... but having had those curls myself (my girls as well) & fighting with them for years, it is inevitable that she will want to cut, color, flatiron, etc. I held out until 8th grade with mine, then cut it all completely off. I've had to compromise with the girls on straightening & coloring ideas to make the long hair & curls more bearable. Cherish it while she's young & you're the keeper of the curls!"

So true, Laura. Little girls grow into big girls, and eventually into women and while we love the women they become, we can't help but miss the little girls they were. Our time as keeper of the curls passes way too quickly.

How To Make Cheap Drugstore Eye Shadow Look Expensive

You finally picked up some snazzy blue shadow (P.S.: it’s trending now) and go to put it on...only to find that it’s a crumbling disappointment. Before you toss it out, try this simple trick that will help brighten and enrich any shade.

What you need: Your eye shadow in question, a chubby white shadow stick and a fluffy eye shadow brush.

What you do: Apply the white shadow across both lids and gently smudge it out to soften the edges. Then, dip your brush into the shadow and sweep it on top as you normally would.

Why it works: The white liner acts as a creamy base for lackluster shadow to grip onto. This not only helps it glide on easier; it also intensifies the color. Now, stock up on any drugstore variety your peepers desire.

PSA: Water Temperature Really Affects Your Beauty Routine

$
0
0

From showering to shampooing, water is a staple in your beauty routine (and you know, life in general). And the right temperature can mean the difference between red, itchy skin and a baby-soft complexion―or a frizzy mop versus a sleek mane. Here, your guide to tweaking the temps to your advantage.

Related: 5 Secrets to Appearing Taller in Photos

Ice cold: To dry your freshly painted nails super fast. Let them air out for a couple minutes and then swiftly dunk them into a bowl of freezing water to set the polish. Boom! No more nicks.

Cool: To wash your face. You want the water to be chilled enough that it feels refreshing, but not so cold that it smacks you awake. Plus, a cool rinse helps to reduce any redness while closing up your pores.

Lukewarm: To shower and wash your hair. We know how good a steamy shower feels (particularly after a long day), but prolonged exposure to hot water actually strips the natural oils from your skin and scalp, leaving you tight and dry. To get a deeper clean, turn to your products (might we suggest an exfoliating scrub and weekly clarifying shampoo) as opposed to turning up the nozzle.

Hot: To shave. The heat softens hairs so they’re easier to remove. To avoid drying your skin out while you tend to your fuzz, turn the heat up just briefly at the start of your shower so you get a little bit of steam in the stall. Then quickly adjust it back to lukewarm temps to finish.

The exception to all of this? Brushing your teeth. There is no known link between water temperature and the cleanliness of your chompers. Just make sure that you’re using a toothpaste with fluoride (to fend off cavities) and are scrubbing the recommended two minutes each time.

Garry Marshall Gave Us The Most Perfect Fashion Sequence In Film History

$

“Big mistake. Big. Huge.”

Fewer lines uttered in the history of fashion in film are quite as memorable as those. They were spoken, of course, by Julia Roberts’ character Vivian Ward in Garry Marshall’s “Pretty Woman,” a movie that cannot be touted for all of its greatness without acknowledging its iconic fashion, too.

You could pretty much point out any of the beloved fashion moments in the movie as being the best ― the cut-out mini-dress she’s wearing when she first meets Richard Gere’s character, Edward Lewis, that red gown, or the polka dot polo match dress:

But as far as memorable movie sequences go, none stick out quite as much as the one involving Vivian’s trips ― one fruitful and one not so much ― to Rodeo Drive.

Your blood boils for Vivian when she is refused service by the snobby sales associates in the high-end boutique. You fall (even more) in love with Hector Elizondo’s Barney Thompson when he softens his stern exterior and hooks her up with “Bridgette from Women’s Clothing.” You, like Edward, swoon over Vivian’s new look. Not to mention, we can only imagine the amount of women who took a page out of Vivian’s playbook when she presents Edward with a tie... wearing only said tie.

But most of all, you cheer for Vivian as she delivers the ultimate clap back to the saleswomen who scorned her. Dressed to the nines, oozing with confidence and determined to get the ultimate redemption she deserves, she leaves the women, who “work on commission,” to wallow in their poor, superficial judgment, shopping bags in tow.

We can thank Garry Marshall for so many things, but find us a movie that combines the power of finding your confidence with gorgeous clothing and the most killer comeback of all time, and we’ll give you a quarter of a million dollar necklace (on loan, of course).

GRAY IN L.A.: BARBIEGATE! Beware Of Puffed Sleeves!

$

GRAY IN L.A.:

Something was bound to happen. Melania, trophy wife of Donald "the Orange-nator" Trump and a skillful Barbie impersonator, stumbled over these two blunders when she shared her classic immigrant's story at the RNC.

1. Thievery, by "borrowing" some phrases of First Lady Michelle Obama's old speech.

2. Puffed sleeves on an ill-fitted dress!

First of all, kudos for good taste in picking Michelle's words; could have been Kim Kardashian's! Secondly, which is the bigger offense of the two?

I have a strong aversion to puffed sleeves, long or short -- when not worn by little girls, Disney princesses, Woodstock attendees and Brigitte Bardot ca. 1966. And now I keep wondering what was the background story in the lavish Trump residence while choosing a dress for the big outing the other night.

I think it went something like this. Mel asked the refined taste authority Don, self-proclaimed expert in all things "hot" and female, "Honey, which dress? The white angelic one with the big, floppy, puffed cuffs, or the pale yellow stunner with the slit skirt and the richly embroidered shoulder pads?"

"Clean white and tight, that'll work best," he barked, "shoulder pads remind me of Ivana and Disco!" and that was that. Melania obeyed, not without imploring, "but I can wear my hair like Raquel Welch in that masterpiece 'Kansas City Bomber' right?" But he was already in front of the bathroom mirror with his custom-made secret hairspray in his hand.

Is all this scrutiny fair? All is fair in fashion! Yes, we are mean and opinionated when it comes to what women wear and why. Of course, we've always been gleefully watching public appearances by idols and enemies, judging, devouring and tearing apart every dress code and style while enjoying mishaps with shrieks of "schadenfreude" -- especially in the political arena.

Right now we're staring at Hillary's hair and her very somber parade of pant suits and wonder whether she will ever surprise us with a burst of something a bit more daring. And in-between we have a Melania moment with a dress that looked, as acerbic fashion critic Cojo called it, "like a ruffled monstrosity out of some 80s nightmare." Close enough. And let's not forget a classic. Does anybody remember that hilarious episode of "Seinfeld" where Jerry wears this wild white puffed-sleeve-shirt to the screams of delight of his friends? Men are more rational and easier to embarrass (except for you know who), while in contrast women swallow just about every fashion bait.

As I have been informed while I type this -- Melania's white "Angel-Dress" with the "pouf" sleeves costs only $2,100 and is supposedly already sold out.

Oh, America, you beautiful, you tolerant. You might hate Trump and wouldn't dream of accepting a foreigner "babe" like Melania as a First Lady -- but some would surely wear some slightly ditzy white dress.

Indeed, clothes are important, they are a statement; they do sent signals and tell who we are. As do our words. Even if they are somebody else's.

As for her copycat "crime," I say this: Melania speaks five or even six languages -- so why didn't she use that talent to come up with something truly original in just one of them? As for her role model choice, she couldn't have picked a more inspiring one. So, why didn't she copy Michelle's often fabulous sense of clothes as well?

So I say "sorry, Melania" or "Entschuldigung" in my native German (which she also speaks fluently). You picked Donald Trump and you wear puffy-sleeved 80s clothes. Two bad choices.

Is Donald Trump A Metrosexual, A Manscaper?

$
0
0
I don't know what it is about Donald, but since he can't answer simple questions like those tossed to him by Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes Sunday night without going all Trumpion, I find myself transfixed by Donald's eyebrows and hair. (Pence is just a wee white Chia pet next to Donald.) Why am I not concentrating on Donald's immigration, gender, economic and women's right policies one might wonder? Because I'm not. To put it simply I am the north to his south in all areas of policy; the U.S. to his Mexico.

First off we'll start this topic off with manscaping. Even though one might think that Melania (perfectly coiffed) would want a manscaping husband, I argue, Donald does not fit this bill. God, he needs to dial in Ivanka's stylist. Now, witness those eyebrows. They are not waxed. I am just dying to get my tweezer near those bushy unibrows of fake blondness to see what treasure lies beneath. Also does he have even have chest hair? I'm going to bet he does. But what color is it? Unlike President Kennedy and Obama, who do not have chest hair, Donald is typically bundled up in a suit coat. When he goes casual, he sports a polo. So we may never find what lurks beneath. Then again, I just might not want to know, nor do I want to see paparazzi shots of him lounging in Palm Beach.

In order to be a metrosexual, Trump would have to go to a hair salon under one category that I saw listed in its definition of a metrosexual, or stop at a Banana Republic if he passed by one. On Facebook last night someone said they knew someone who could "vouch" that Trump styles his own hair. Oh my, what a notch of information to have. In my opinion, his hair Is very Dutch colonies 1700s. It has four diagonal sheep skin rugs to it and it simply must be held in place, I argue, by Aqua Net since no man's hair spray has the power to keep it together like that all day. To be a metrosexual, he would have to use pomade. I can bet you Trump has never met hair icon Sally Hershberger, as she would have Meg Ryan-ized him, male style, by now.

You would think that he prides himself on the look of things, including his well-trimmed golf courses, Trump should look at himself in the mirror. Donald Trump needs to get on Pinterest. Some possible inspiration he could draw from would be Cary Grant, George Clooney, David Beckham...and Boris Johnson.

Kim Kardashian Wore A Corset Over Her T-Shirt, But That Doesn't Mean You Should

$

Kim Kardashian took a breather from the #KimKExposedTaylorParty to wear something it looks like she can’t breathe in.

Mrs. West couldn’t have possibly stepped out in a simple, casual outfit in Los Angeles on Tuesday ... that would be too easy. No, instead she paired a baggy T-shirt and stretchy pants with a pair of high heels and a leather corset reminiscent of the waist trainers she and her sister proudly hock on social media.

Here’s the thing: Kim and the rest of the Kardashian krew have repeatedly declared their love of Spanx and the like, and the choice of whether or not a woman wants to wear shapewear is hers and hers alone. But corsets and shapewear are downright bad for your insides. Plus, there is literally no chance this outfit is comfortable.

We’ve seen it all from Kim Kardashian, but this one is a real head scratcher. If the desire is cinching the waist, might we suggest a belt next time?

Someone Out There Will Likely Pay $8,000 For Marilyn Monroe's Hair

If you’re a hardcore Marilyn Monroe fan with $8,000 to kick around, you can now spend it on two locks of the iconic star’s hair.

So you can… look at it? Pet it? Frankly, we’re not really sure why anyone would pay big bucks for a stranger’s hair, even a stranger as amazing and legendary as Marilyn Monroe.

The hair will be up for auction via Los Angeles’ Julien’s Auctions in November, and they expect it to be sold for between $6,000 and $8,000, People reports. Other items, like Monroe’s movie costumes, letters and personal possessions will also be available.

Monroe’s locks were previously in the possession of Frieda Hull, a friend of the actress who died in 2014. Julien’s Auctions noted that Hull was originally a member of the “Monroe Six,” a group of hardcore fans who frequently followed and photographed the actress.

Chrissy Teigen Just Revealed Everything You Want To Know About Celebrities

It’s a well-established fact that Chrissy Teigen is already a great tweeter, but she’s recently taking her skills to a whole new level.

Over the past couple of days, the model and new mom has been answering some pretty candid questions from Twitter users about the daily lives and interactions of celebrities, and well, it’s all quite fascinating. This is what we’ve learned:

Time is money, which is why the biggest perk of being a celeb is never having to wait for anything again.

Celebs use their fame to nab those hard-to-get reservations.

Celebs have to introduce themselves to each other, even if they are a household name like Oprah.

Asking for a phone number is still awkward.

Celebs relish celeb Twitter beefs as much as we do, and message each other about them.

”Have your people call my people” is an actual thing.

Online shopping is a godsend.

Fake relationships happen, just not as often as we think.

Celebs have their own dating apps.

There’s no need to call the paparazzi if you know where to go.

Celebs aren’t above saving flattering paparazzi pics in their phones.

Celebrity babies do not care who they are.

Teigen also answered some personal questions about her own experience as a celebrity.

She fangirls a bit when someone she likes follows her on Twitter.

And there were a few celebs who left her completely flustered when she met them.

She doesn’t judge celebrities who keep quiet about big issues, because she she says they stand to lose “half their fans” if they speak out.

She’s heard some great rumors about herself.

Illuminati membership is not a sure thing.

The Snapchat love story continues.

Miranda Kerr, 33, and Snapchat co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel, 26, are engaged. The Australian supermodel shared the good news on Wednesday via Instagram, and of course, Snapchat.

I said yes!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

The couple were first spotted together back in June of 2015, according to Us Weekly, but they didn’t make their red carpet debut until February of this year. Then, in May, the two bought a $12 million mansion in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood.

Kerr spoke about her relationship with Spiegel in an interview with The Edit published in January.

“He’s 25 [now 26], but acts like he’s 50,” she said. “He’s not out partying. He goes to work in [LA’s] Venice. He comes home. We don’t go out. We’d rather be at home and have dinner, go to bed early.”

The model and skincare mogul also told The Sydney Morning Herald that she and Spiegel “were really good friends” before they started dating.

Kerr was previously married to actor Orlando Bloom, with whom she has a son, Flynn.

Zara Under Fire For Allegedly Copying Artist And Not Giving A You-Know-What

Another day, another fast fashion empire being accused of stealing artwork.

Tuesday Bassen, a Los Angeles-based illustrator responsible for a slew of adorable clothing, stickers, pins and more, is speaking out against Zara for allegedly copying four of her designs from their clothing without crediting or compensating her for the work.

Bassen, who told The Huffington Post she first noticed the copies in early 2016 “when hundreds of fans reached out to me privately to ask if I was working with them or if there were plagiarizing my work,” joins a long list of artists who have taken a stand against fast fashion brands in the name of their livelihood. What makes this instance different, however, is the alleged response provided to Bassen from Zara’s lawyers.

“Their lawyers claim that my work is both ‘too simple’ to defend, and that I have no base because I am a small artist with 90,000 followers on Instagram while they are a major corporation with 90 million people, so only ‘a handful of people’ would notice the designs are mine,” she said.

The alleged response, which states that Bassen’s artwork has a “lack of distinctiveness” and that despite complaints, Zara’s 98 million average monthly visitors “clearly put those few notifications into sharp perspective,” is, according to Bassen, the brand’s way of “trying to belittle and bully me.”

Bassen also took to Instagram to show her followers the brand’s response, calling the experience “super disheartening”and pledging to The Huffington Post that she plans to “pursue this further.” Having paid $2,000 simply to have a lawyer send the brand a letter in the first place, she told HuffPost she hopes she can “raise awareness for how often this happens, and how few artists can afford to pursue it.”

The post, which has garnered over 13,000 likes and nearly 3,000 comments so far, certainly appears to have struck a chord with fellow artists and supporters alike.

Zara did not immediately return a request for comment, however the sheer awareness is hopefully a step toward some kind of change and perhaps even a response from the brand itself.

Last week, Playboy model Dani Mathers made headlines for Snapchatting a photo of a naked woman at her gym (without her consent) with the caption, “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either.” After hearing about the incident ― which was roundly and rightly criticized  ― one mom in Florida refused to let Mathers’ body-shaming slide.

On July 16, Christine Blackmon posted a letter on Facebook to Mathers along with a photo of herself. In the caption, she wrote that her husband had snapped the pic after she had taken off her scrubs to change for a workout and was only in “shoes, undies and a headband.” After she looked at the photo, Blackmon asked her husband to delete it because she only saw “lumps and bumps.” She eventually let her husband, who said the photo was “beautiful,” keep it and used the photo to send an important message to Mathers.

”Here’s the deal ― you may have been a Playboy model but not all of us work out to be ‘hot,’ some of us work out simply to honor the bodies we were given,” Blackmon wrote. “That’s all that woman was trying to do and you violated her. Shame on you.”

Along with the hashtags #UnSeeTHIS and #AllBodiesAreBeautiful, Blackmon wrote that she wanted Mathers to see her in all her “lumpy, bumpy glory.” She told The Huffington Post the model’s Snapchat post immediately “annoyed” her, sparking her desire to speak up about body-shaming.

“That’s really important to me because I’m just like everybody else,” Blackmon said. “I have a body and I’m occasionally ashamed of it.”

Since being posted on Facebook on July 16, the photo has gotten more than 52,000 reactions and more than 6,000 shares as of Wednesday afternoon. Blackmon never thought her post would go so viral and said she was simply “tired of people being negative and mean.”

As the photo continues to spread, Blackmon hopes it will bring some positivity and self-acceptance with it.

“All around I just wish we could all just respect ourselves for who we are and what we are and quit trying to be someone else.”
