Ariana Grande Finally Tries Out A New Hairstyle, And It's Gorgeous

When it comes to ever-changing Hollywood hair, Ariana Grande isn’t even on the radar. In fact, her signature perma-ponytail has been the subject of many an article and DIY attempt.

So when the songstress did change it up, to say people took notice is an understatement.

Grande debuted a brand spanking new set of bangs on Saturday via a dark, blurry Instagram that sparked a “did she or didn’t she” debate among commenters.

Grande was quick to prove her bangs’ authenticity by spending the rest of the weekend sharing photos of her new ‘do (and apparently trying to catch ‘em all in between posts).

If she intended to distract people from the revelation that she was rejected from performing at the White House over her doughnut-licking scandal, we think it’s safe to say the mission was accomplished.

From tattooed faces to artists getting up close and personal with their subjects’ backsides, you’d be hard pressed to find body space not being treated as a canvas at the 2016 Tattoo Week in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Some folks were happy to model the creative — and occasionally frightening — ways that they’ve transformed themselves into walking art.

In Novel Coincidence, Hemingway Wins Hemingway Look-Alike Contest

The 36th Annual Ernest “Papa” Hemingway Look-Alike Contest ended in a way that can only be described as novel.

For the first time ever, the winning “Papa” wannabe was actually a real Hemingway.

Dave Hemingway of Macon, North Carolina, beat out 139 competitors to win the contest in Key West, Florida, on Saturday night, according to the Florida Sun Sentinel.

The 65-year-old isn’t related to Ernest Hemingway and he doesn’t write, but he shares other traits with the legendary artist besides his beard and last name.

“I do feel like Ernest because I’m in the same town that he lived in for so many years,” he said, CBS Miami reported. “I like to fish, I like to drink a little bit, I like women and I just like having a good fun time.”

While it’s the first time a man named Hemingway has won the contest, it’s not Dave Hemingway’s first time in the competition. He’s competed seven times before.

He believes he won this year not because of his name, but because of his sweater: a wool, cream-colored fisherman’s sweater like the kind favored by the writer himself.

“Even though this sweater is really hot, it was part of my strategy,” he said, according to the New York Daily News. “And I think it worked really well.”

The look-alike contest is a part of the annual Hemingway Days festival that celebrates the author’s legacy, including his time in Key West during the 1930s.

The event is held at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, where the author frequently drank, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Kendall Jenner Doesn't Understand Why People Care About Her Nipples

Kendall Jenner gives no thought to the “free the nip” haters.

The supermodel addressed her willingness to frequently go out in public sans bra while additionally administering chill pills to all her nip critics.

“I really don’t see what the big deal is with going braless!” wrote Jenner on her app. “I think it’s cool and I really just don’t care! It’s sexy, it’s comfortable and I’m cool with my breasts. That’s it!”

The notoriously private member of the Kardashian clan pierced her nipples back in 2015, much to the horror of her older sisters.

“My sisters were honestly shocked that I did it. Khloé couldn’t believe it!” Jenner told People at the time, adding that momager Kris Jenner never even addressed the topic with her.

Jenner frequently shows off her beloved piercing, and attributes her affinity for going braless to helping her do so.

“It’s also a fun way to show off my different nipple rings! Jacquie Aiche made me a couple of pieces that are really sick — like a pair of angel wings,” she said.

We’re all for anything that makes her feel both “sexy” and “comfortable.” Who knows, maybe this Kardashian trend will catch on like the contour?

Why I Love Watching People Do Their Makeup on the Subway

I had to mumble "sorry" to a woman sitting next to me on the subway today. Twice. She was meticulously applying eyeliner and mascara -- and I was completely mesmerized. The way she timed and calibrated each stroke with the hurtle of the train. Her complete concentration and surgically steady hand. The sheer balls it takes to do three coats of carbon-black mascara while going 45 mph at 7 a.m.

My furtive glances must not have been all that furtive, though, because in between coats, she shot me a withering look that made it clear I was breaking the unwritten rule of mass transit: Feign indifference at all times.

Related: The Definitive Guide to NYC Subway Instagram Accounts

But I am not indifferent. The current subway PSAs place public grooming firmly in the no-no category, and I'll probably be in the minority when I say this, but I like to watch. I really like it. I actually will switch places to be closer to someone doing their full face in the same car as me.

I'm not looking for makeup tips. I've actually spent many, many years writing and editing all about beauty, so even though I am rather clumsy with my own makeup skills, I know far more than I care to admit about shading, shaping, and contouring. And I'm not watching because I'm grossed out (unless there's nail clipping, which is unacceptable). Nor am I watching because I'm simply bored.

Much in the same way some people find eavesdropping on a sparring couple at a restaurant a moth-to-a-flame guilty pleasure, when I get a front-row seat to someone else's beauty routine I'm similarly riveted; I stop whatever I am doing to take it all in.

And finally, after today, I think I've figured out why.

I wasn't in a sorority. I don't have sisters. During those years when everyone was "pregaming" at someone else's house -- angling for the mirror and sharing eye-shadow quads while tossing back cheap liquor -- I was ... I don't quite know where I was. Part of the time, in college, I was busy being a jock, so I guess I was working out or at practice. Part of the time, I simply wasn't doing all that much put-your-face-on partying, so there wasn't much prep to be had. I was also not much into group living: During four years of college, I managed to have roommates for just one and a half years. After graduation, I quickly started living alone.

The end result: I've never spent much time with other women while they get on their game faces. Sure, I see the finished product everywhere, but rarely do I have the chance to go behind the curtain, to see how the sausage is made. To know what those crazy-long lashes looked like before the five crazy-aggressive flicks of the wand; to see the eyelids before the cat-eye gave its first purr.

Related: The Key to Summer Makeup Is Embracing the Heat

And while I can quickly conjure up a smokey eye in my mind's eye, I'm amazed by all of the ways people actually get there -- whether they have a different brush for every layer; whether they're creating it all with the el cheapo stuff from the drugstore or springing for the fanciest brands. I like watching women who clearly have a very practiced routine, barely pausing from one step to the next, fingers fishing through their pouch for the next item without even glancing down. I get a kick out of seeing if they are following all of the various tips and tricks doled out in women's magazines or if they are going rogue.

And I wonder: Is this an everyday thing or a running-late exception? On days when I don't have time to do any makeup, I just go without -- or maybe swipe on more lipstick. Honestly, I'm impressed by the commitment to beauty that's demonstrated by women who whip out their bag full of tricks on the Q train.

But it's more than that, I think. It's not simply curiosity about the intricacies of technique or my fundamental nosiness about why someone has eight different kinds of makeup brushes in her purse. In fact, I'd argue that I'm also compelled to stare out of a bit of wistfulness for a kind of girlfriendlike camaraderie I miss, especially because it was so truncated in my life.

As my friends and I have gotten older and disappeared into the demands of our adult lives and our families, we've lost those shared moments of communal prepping -- be it in the kitchen, the bathroom vanity, or anywhere else -- that can be the steady undercurrent to intimate female friendship. I know it may seem like a stretch to say that I find a bit of sisterhood (as one-way as it may seem) in watching another woman do her makeup, but I do.

So, to any subway sister who catches me shamelessly staring while you line your lips, consider this: Sometimes the most beautiful part is not the before or the after. It's the part in between.

'Tis the season of constant pit stains, funky smells, and that horrible feeling of arriving at work drenched in a layer of sweat before nearly catching a cold in your over-air-conditioned office. To tackle the summer sweats, we tracked down professional perspirers -- four trainers and one founder of an activewear line -- who revealed their go-to deodorants.

This one is all natural, vegan, and organic; handmade with high-quality, food-grade ingredients, with no additives or harsh chemicals. And I love its frosting-like texture and orange scent."

It really depends on my mood and schedule. Tom's smells like aloe and green tea; very clean. Genius Solid Shampoos Use No Plastic Packaging By Leaving Out Water

$

This company wants to help you bathe guilt-free, with bath products that save water and opt out of plastics altogether.

Skin and hair care company Ethique sells shampoo, conditioner and soap ― without any plastic packaging. The products all come as solid bars rather than the traditional liquid, according to the website. The packaging is entirely plastic-free, made of biodegradable, compostable material.

“The more I thought about it, the crazier it seemed to me that we pay gobs of money for all that water packaged in plastic,” founder Brianne West told Forbes. “In a nutshell, my goal is to save the world from plastic waste!”

What’s more, the solid bars use significantly less water than liquid shampoo or conditioner. While traditional conditioners can be composed of up to 90 percent water, Ethique’s solid conditioners and shampoos remove water from the product, saving an estimated one liter of water per bar, according to the website.

The shampoos, conditioners and soaps are also made entirely from natural ingredients like cocoa butter, coconut oil and lavender.

Plastic is a huge problem for the environment. More than 80 percent of recyclable plastic bottles end up in landfills each year, according to National Geographic. And plastic is not biodegradable, so it takes hundreds of years to decompose.

What’s worse, tons of plastic ends up in the ocean, breaking down into small pieces to then be eaten by marine life. Without any reforms, the oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050.

So far, West’s company has spared the planet from 60,000 plastic bottles, according to Forbes. Its goal is to save 1 million bottles by 2020.

Another bonus is that these products last longer than liquid forms because they’re concentrated. One bar can last as long as five bottles of its liquid alternative.

Using the products is fairly simple. As with a solid bar of soap, the user rubs the shampoo bar into her hair, and uses water from the shower to work it into a lather, according to a Treehugger blog.

West came up with the idea of solid bath products in 2012 while in college. Studying science at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, she was taken aback by the massive amounts of water contained in shampoo and conditioner, according to New Zealand’s Newshub.

“I’m not passionate about makeup, cosmetics or fashion ― I love science and the environment,” West told the news outlet. “Why put water in shampoo when there’s already water in your shower? Why contribute to the devastating effects of plastic bottles when you don’t have to?”

The company has grown from one woman tinkering in a kitchen to a lab of six employees, according to the website. And the company’s revenue has doubled each year, reports Newshub.

Though Ethique is based in New Zealand, its products ship worldwide, according to Forbes.

“When I received my parcel from Ethique, it arrived in a cardboard box filled with scrunched brown paper and sealed with brown paper tape ― there was no plastic anywhere,” Katherine Martinko wrote on Treehugger. “The shampoo and conditioner combo is the best thing...leaving my hair silky, soft, and frizz-free.”

7 Reasons Helen Mirren Is Better Than Ever On Her 71st Birthday

$
0
0

Actress Helen Mirren turns 71 on Tuesday, July 26. Is it possible that she just keeps getting better and better each year? Here are some of the reasons we love the Dame.

1. She’s a Triple Crown winner at an age when many other horses get put out to pasture.

Mirren is entertainment’s version of the watch that keeps on ticking. Despite the scarcity of roles for many older actors, Mirren continues to land some pretty big parts. For example, she'll next appear in "Fast 8," the eighth film in the action-packed "Fast and Furious" franchise, due out in 2017. Perhaps it’s because she is comfortable in her own skin and isn’t afraid to put herself out there. And of course she has that regal thing going for her.

Not only did she win an Oscar in 2006 for her role in “The Queen,” she also nabbed a Tony Award for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Audience” as well as three Emmys for her work on “Prime Suspect” and “Elizabeth I.”

2. She’s not afraid to talk openly and honestly about body image and her own confidence as she’s gotten older.

She said recently that working in a youth-obsessed industry is terribly intimidating. “Sometimes you feel wonderful and — it’s the same whether you’re 13 or 26 or 86 — sometimes you feel insecure and frightened,” she said.

3. She’s also not afraid of aging or of calling out Hollywood on its blatant ageism.

Aging, she says, has its pros and cons. “I loved being young but I’ve enjoyed every stage in different ways,” she said. “It’s all part of the wonderful process of being a human being.”

Mirren was being interviewed at an event in June 2015 hosted by The Wrap when she was asked about actress Maggie Gyllenhaal’s revelation that she — at age 37 — was told she’s too old to play the love interest of a 55-year-old man.

“I’m sure that’s true,” Mirren said, without batting an eye. “Fucking outrageous. It’s ridiculous,” she continued. Mirren then pointed out the blatant double standard when it comes to actors and the heroines starring opposite them. “We all watched James Bond as he got more and more geriatric, and his girlfriends got younger and younger. It’s so annoying,” Mirren said.

4. She once lived with Liam Neeson, which makes her the envy of many a woman.

Mirren lived with actor Liam Neeson during the early 1980s. They had met while working on the set of “Excalibur.” When he was interviewed for Inside the Actors Studio, Neeson credited Mirren for helping him get an agent.

5. She’s known as the “sex queen of Stratford.”

She went from being a young hottie to an older hottie. With class, dignity and a beauty that comes from within, Mirren is a textbook case of how to age gracefully. The nickname “sex queen of Stratford” came from her days at the Royal Shakespeare Company and is an acknowledgement of her willingness to strip when the role called for it.

6. She’s daring and still knows how to have fun.

As we wrote here, Dame Mirren has never been one to follow the crowd. She has dyed her hair pink, shopped at “stripper shops” for sexy shoes, and royally smacked down people who drink and drive. And clearly she is the coolest septuagenarian around by getting some major ink.

And, of course, there was that time when she chatted with Jimmy Fallon while sucking helium.

7. She’s been married nearly 20 years to husband Taylor Hackford, an achievement that’s something of an anomaly in Hollywood, where many unions end faster than you can say “I do.”

When asked what’s made her relationship work, she told Entertainment Tonight in February that it’s all down to “spending a lot of time apart.”

“We miss each other terribly,” Mirren said, but the time apart “isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

Mirren says it’s all part of what keeps them going strong. A lasting marriage is all about “listening to the other person, giving the other person room to be who they want to be, who they are,” Mirren said. “Certainly giving them room and support in their profession and work... but that has to be a two-way street.”

Happy birthday to a beautiful woman!

Kylie Jenner Launches A New Eyeshadow, Gets One Step Closer To World Domination

First it was lips. Now it’s eyes. Next it’s world domination.

Kylie Jenner teased fans Monday with a glimpse of her latest cosmetics venture: a bronze eyeshadow collection that gives Urban Decay’s cult-followed naked palette a run for its money.

The Bronze Palette #kyshadows

Featuring nine shades, the aptly named “Kyshadow” has been a long time coming for Jenner’s loyal followers. Some of them got surprise (and not at all staged) hand deliveries of the product from Jenner herself.

Jenner also did a makeup tutorial on Snapchat to show fans how she uses what she calls “the perfect bronze” -- a tutorial that will actually be super helpful for the people who are able to get their hands on one of these bad boys. Since the lip kits are still selling out at the drop of a hat after nearly a year, we have a feeling that grabbing the new product when it’s released on Tuesday will be nothing short of impossible.

And sure, you could buy another, similar eyeshadow set, but just remember, if you buy a palette by any other name, you completely ruin the chances of getting the lucky kit that was hand-scraped by Jenner herself:

Victoria’s Secret Photoshop Secrets Revealed

$

For Teen Vogue, by Brittney McNamara

Between filters and camera angles, anyone with a smartphone has figured out that there’s always a little photo magic happening when you see flawless pictures online, in magazines, and in advertisements.

Recently, an anonymous photo retoucher for Victoria’s Secret confessed to Refinery 29 just how much professionals are manipulating the pictures that we see in ads. Given that this is an anonymous source, we do advise you to take the below “inside information” with a grain of salt. However, here are a few crazy things we learned about what allegedly happens behind the scenes at a Victoria’s Secret shoot.

Those aren’t their real boobs

We all know the Victoria’s Secret look — somehow these very skinny models have perky and full boobs that seem to float magically, making our own small and droopy boobs seem a little sad. It turns out, though, the boobs we’re seeing in these ads are far from real.

Related: The Top 10 Mistakes You’re Probably Making When You Straighten Your Hair

According to Sarah — the name Refinery 29 gave the anonymous retoucher — models’ boobs are retouched both before and after a picture is actually taken. It starts on set:

“They put a push-up bra under the bathing suit. And we retouch out the bra...a lot of [staffers] would complain because they even did it with strapless stuff. When you’re wearing a strapless bikini, in no way, shape, or form [can] you have cleavage. It’s physically impossible with the way gravity works.”

That’s before they use Photoshop to make them look bigger. So, if you catch a model in real life, it sounds like her boobs might look a lot more like our own than we’d ever guess.

Those aren’t their real anything, actually

The models in Victoria’s Secret swimsuit ads have a lot of help. From padding to hair extensions, the models are altered even before they get in front of the camera. After, Sarah toldRefinery 29, retouchers give models fuller breasts, a rounder butt, and cover up any protruding bones.

It turns out, she said, consumers want to see skinny women, but they don’t want to see the reality of what being skinny looks like. Instead, we get this skinny-curvy hybrid that rarely exists in nature.

It doesn’t stop there, though. Sarah said sometimes retouching goes so far as to give models entirely new body parts.

“There’s a lot of the switching bodies up,” Sarah said. In one example, Sarah said she might be asked to give a model a different woman’s arms to make the pose look better. Crazy!

Models are hairy just like us

No, models don’t have access to some magical razor that gives them a shave so smooth and close that there’s nary an ingrown hair. It’s just Photoshop.

Sarah said that no matter what, armpits will appear grey in photos. Instead of even trying to get a close shave, Sarah said many models show up with hairy pits, letting the pros handle it when they retouch the pictures.

Related: Aerie Removed Photoshop from Ads and Sales Went Way Up

“They come to these photo shoots and, like, they have their arms up in the classic beach pose, and they have, like, hairy armpits. They all have stubbly pubes — all the normal stuff [non-models have].” It’s good to know they don’t have any special shaving secrets that we’re not clued in on.

All this aside, Refinery does note that some brands are already throwing Photoshop aside (look no further than the “Aerie Real” campaign). Others still are seeing pushback from consumers when they take things too far.

While most of us know on some level that brands use Photoshop and your favorite Instagram models heavily filter, it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of that and instead think there’s something wrong with us for not looking a certain way. It’s important to acknowledge it for what it is — fantasy — rather than a standard to hold ourselves to. To read the full article, head on over to Refinery29.

Uggs Get A Makeover: See The Photos

For Teen Vogue, by Avery Matera

In the early aughts, Ugg boots were the ultimate wardrobe staple. You’d be hard-pressed to find a girl who didn’t wear her Uggs each day, pairing the boots with everything from mini skirts to Juicy Couture tracksuits. With Juicy Couture’s latest tracksuit re-launch, it’s only right that Ugg update its original style.

Out with the old and in with the new—and improved. It’s time to bid adieu to that original sheepskin boot you loved so much, as Ugg is discontinuing the style they so aptly named the “Classic”.

Never fear, though! Just in time for fall, Ugg is debuting the “Classic II”. Style-wise, we dare you to spot the differences, as they are near-replicas of the pair you bought ten years ago.

They boast a heavier tread, which we’re thrilled about because we’ve slipped an embarrassingly large amount of times on an icy sidewalk while wearing them. What’s more? They’ve solved ourbiggest complaint. Remember those horrible water and salt stains that would ruin the suede material? No longer will that be an issue, because Uggs are now—wait for it—waterproof and stain resistant!

If you were weary of buying another pair of the classic Ugg boots, it may be time to change your mind. You can shop them here for $160.

Kendall Jenner, we’re not in Balmain anymore.

The supermodel/tiny top enthusiast is the star of yet another brand new ad campaign. But instead of touting couture or concealer, this time, the 20-year-old is promoting the vote.

The Independent Journal Review and Rock The Vote, a non-profit focused on getting young people involved and excited about the political process, tapped Jenner for a short video reminiscent of those ever-popular “through the decades” videos seen across the internet.

She starts the clip in a 1970’s-inspired “flower power” look to mark the year 18-year-olds were granted the right to vote, and ends it in a power suit to commemorate when, the video says, “over 20 million young voters decided the outcome” in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections.

Jenner has been vocal about her own political preferences, a pretty influential move on its own considering her 62 million followers.

Starbucks' New Dress Code Allows Baristas To Feel More Like Themselves

Your latte could soon come from under a fedora, or maybe even a bowtie.

Starbucks announced a big change to its dress code this week that lets employees dress for work pretty much as they would in their everyday lives.

Previously, baristas had to wear solid black or white shirts. The new dress code keeps the signature Starbucks green apron but allows for shirts in a range of darkish colors like gray, navy, dark denim and brown. Bright hair color is now welcome, as long as it’s at least semi-permanent (no hair chalk!), as are beanies and fedorasSkirts and dresses with tights are also allowed in the new dress code.

The new rules are meant to let baristas “shine as individuals,” Starbucks said in a statement. They released some images of what your barista might sport in the near future:

In 2014, Starbucks changed its dress code to allow employees to show their tattoos, as long as they are tasteful and not on the face or neck. This update takes the wardrobe freedom even further. It’s effective immediately in Starbucks stores nationwide.

Because if you’re going to mix a purple drink, then you’d better have purple hair to match. Cheers!

This $249 Razor Is Made Of Sapphire. Is It Worth The Crazy Price?

$

There’s a razor on the market ― it cuts your beard with a sapphire blade the width of 80 atoms that claims to last at least 6 months before you need to change it. And it costs $100,000.

But its manufacturer, Zafirro, launched a crowdfunding campaign for a less expensive model, the Z2, which will cost you $249 when it officially hits the market sometime in 2017.

Initially, $249 still sounds ridiculously high for a razor. But let’s do some math.

A Zafirro representative told HuffPost that the $249 razor will last anywhere between 6 months to a full 10 years, if treated well.

Let’s compare that to one of the cheaper blade subscription services on the market right now: The Dollar Shave Club, which Unilever reportedly bought for $1 billion this month. They recommend replacing your blade once a week, or every three shaves.

That works out to about 52 blades a year.

DSC’s blades range from $3 (for five twin-blade cartridges, including shipping and handling) to $9 (for four six-blade cartridges) per month, which equals $36 to $108 per year.

For Gillette, that’s more than $190 a year before taxes (at $30 for 8 blades), including about $10 for the handle.

Zafirro’s replacement blades will cost $39 each, so let’s say you buy the $249 razor, with the included blade, in January. Worst case scenario and the blade lasts 6 months instead of the potential 10 years, and you’ll spend $39 again in June. In five years, you’ll have spent a total of about $600.

With the DSC, the five-year total ranges from $180 to $540, and for Gillette, it’s more than $900.

The Zafirro kit falls somewhere in the middle (this is assuming Zafirro stays in business for the terms of our little hypothesis, of course).

Zaffiro doesn’t exercise much confidence on its Kickstarter page, telling buyers that “if you are thinking of buying primarily to reduce your annual shaving costs on disposable razors and cartridges, it’s probably best to hold off for now,” explaining that it hopes to make it even more affordable in the future.

So the $249 price tag for a sapphire razor is still high, but over time, not much more expensive than its competitors if it’s indeed effective ― and the biggest takeaway with this razor is that you’ll be throwing fewer of them away every year.

As Slate points out, it’s estimated that we toss out 2 billion disposable razors every year, and we haven’t found a way to make it cost efficient yet for recycling centers to accept them.

Another environmentally (and economically) advantageous option would be to use a straight razor, which will last years if maintained properly, or a double-edge razor, which still uses disposable blades but they’re very inexpensive ― they’re also 100 percent steel, which means they’re recyclable (you can simply store them in a blade bank or secured aluminum can and take them to the recycling center as steel).

But no matter which type of razor you use, it’s the amount of water you use while shaving that makes the biggest environmental impact when you’re shaving. As Slate pointed out

The worst thing you can do is shave in the shower, a sin that can be committed with a disposable or a waterproof electric. Shaving for 10 minutes with a typical 2.5 gallons-per-minute shower head, you’d waste more than 24 gallons of hot water, 4.1 kilowatt-hours of electricity, and 5.3 pounds of carbon dioxide in your warm, misty tub. It would take less than three days of shaving to account for the energy you’d use by shaving in the sink for an entire year.

So shave with whatever blade you want ― just don’t do it in the shower.

Creating the ideal bedroom for maximizing your sleep isn’t just about a finding the right bed and pillows. Rather, it should include reflections of who you are.

As part of the Angie’s List sleep sanctuary contest, lifestyle and design experts Carter Oosterhouse, Jennifer Bertrand and Mandi Gubler created their versions of the perfect bedroom for sleep. The designers used five tips from Arianna Huffington’s book, “The Sleep Revolution,” to provide their clients with a space conducive to a good night’s sleep.

The experts focused on eliminating technology and blue lights, keeping the temperature cool, filling the room with personal objects and making the space comfortable.

Check out the beautiful spaces in the video above.

When You Buy Tampons, This Company Gives Pads To Girls In India

This will make periods suck a lot less for a lot of girls.

When a customer orders a month’s supply of tampons from menstrual hygiene company Corathe company gives girls in need in India to get a month’s supply of sustainable pads, according to the website.

In India, an estimated 70 percent of women can’t afford sanitary napkins, according to a 2011 study. And almost one in four Indian girls drop out of school altogether once they start menstruating.

But Cora doesn’t just send products abroad that could potentially “undermine the local economy,” according to the company.

Instead, Cora partners with local organizations to supply the pads.

The company adds up its sales each month, and then buys the equivalent supply of pads from partners in India. The partners employ local women to manufacture the pads, paying them a living wage. The pads are then distributed to girls in local schools ― free of charge.

“Cora is driven by a desire to ensure all women have access to safe and healthy menstrual products,” co-founder Molly Hayward told Forbes

Hayward was driven to start Cora after a trip to Kenya to teach English, when she noticed girls were skipping class during their periods, reports Teen Vogue.

“Girls would miss school during their periods because they couldn’t afford sanitary pads,” Hayward told Teen Vogue. “I was outraged ― and inspired.”

Hayward launched Cora in February, with the lofty goal of giving every girl “a safe and effective way to manage her period,” according to the website.

Cora functions as a monthly subscription. Customers select the number of tampons they want to get each month, the absorbency, and when to make payments ― monthly, quarterly or annually.

Cora is one of a number of menstrual hygiene companies that employ the one-for-one business model. Conscious Period, which is also an organic tampon company, donates a box of pads to homeless women in the U.S. for every box of tampons purchased.

While Cora currently focuses its efforts on supporting girls in India, the company hopes to one day see no woman or girl struggle to afford menstrual hygiene products.

“Our work will be done when every woman can use products that are good for her body and the planet,” Hayward told Forbes. “And when no girl or woman is disempowered by her biology.”
