Go Easy When Fighting Frizzy Hair

$
0
0
The heat is on. Just look at your hair.

Either you've got frizzy hair or you're battling it.

• Don't overdo the styling! This is a problem anytime, but more so when you're fighting frizzy hair. Let's say you're headed out for the evening, going for a loose wave and you're working with a brush and blow dryer or flatiron. The temptation is to take it all the way, to get 'the look' before you step away from the mirror ... you've gone too far. Stop brushing and styling and use your fingers to loosen and pull out the curl.

• Go low on the temp. Heat is a big contributor to frizz. Especially if it's already dry and hot out, turn down the temp on your tools.

• Use more hair oils and nourishing professional-quality conditioners.

• Again, brushing and brushing to 'tame' your hair is going to make the frizz worse. Take it easy. Try doing some combing and detangling before you shower and condition. Then go with those nourishing oils after you shower.

• Change your hair style. If you're shooting for a look that is work-intensive, that takes a lot of brushing and blow-drying, it's time for something different. Consider a more natural look that requires less styling for your daily do.

• Take the shower but skip washing your hair occasionally. Showering washes out dirt but also the oils and moisture that protect your hair from the frizz.

• Consider updos and braids, and resist the urge to perfect the sections with lots of brushing and combing. Keeping the hairs gathered together in braids should protect them from the heat and wind that can cause more frizz.

• Use clips and hair holds that are gentle on your hair.

To summarize, if you're fighting the frizz, stop! Don't fight it. Go easy. Go slow. Be gentle. If you're struggling with a harsh brush to smooth out your hair, you're making it worse. Nurture your hair. Don't insist on styles that require lots of heat and brushing. It's summer ... relax.

As always, be open to change.

Not Wearing Bras: Empowering Or Embarrassing?

$

0
I'm intrigued by the reported trend that women are no longer wearing bras. Ditching your bra is supposed to make you feel more independent, liberated, and empowered.

Here are some headlines from the past few weeks: "Why Millenials Are Going Braless," Why More Women are Freeing Their Breasts," and "12 Reasons Going Braless is the World's Best Feeling," Social media rallied around a high school student sent home for not wearing a bra. It looks like an exciting new cultural shift is taking place.

Bloggers and others are reporting on the freedom that comes with ditching underwires or choosing to wear less structured bralettes. The premise of these pieces is that bras are at best an optional fashion accessory, and at worst a symbol of women's societal oppression.

But I'm skeptical of these claims that women prefer not wearing bras. Why?

Natural Breast Sizes and Shapes. Breasts come in a multitude of sizes and shapes, from AAA to K cups and beyond. Unless you have smallish, firm boobs, going without a bra can be both impractical and physically painful. The only time I ever went without a bra was shortly after my breast lift, at the age of 49. Even during my more youthful but larger pendulous breast years, it was tough to go braless in hot weather. (A river of sweat kept my boobs glued to my rib cage.) As I've aged, I'm relieved to have heavier breast flesh lifted up and away from my body.

Areolae and Nipple Coverage. Bras do an excellent job of concealing nipples. It's an important function, even if you support #freethenipple. Slapping on a couple of pasties will keep headlights under control. But areolae and nips still poke through clothes. Many women don't like the look or prefer not to share that much information.

Fashion. I like how the right bra shapes the look of my clothes. I want my boobs centered on my chest, not floating around under my tops or dresses. That's my personal preference, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. Surveys report 80% of women don't leave their house without first putting on a bra. Yes, gorgeous braless styles are fashionable (and have always been shown on runways), but not everyone can or wants to wear them.

Physical Activity. Women in ancient times understood the benefit of binding down their boobs during exercise. Studies show that female athletes perform better in well-fitting bras. It's no surprise that jock straps were used in the design the first modern sports bra.

Body Shaming. It's newsworthy when a celebrity is spotted out without a bra. Paparazzi lenses love to document these so-called wardrobe "fails." Women who go braless are called out for "flaunting" their bodies or looking for extra (read: male) attention. It's sexist public slut shaming. Should women be ridiculed for not wearing bras? Of course not. But that doesn't stop the tabloid shame.

2016-07-26-1469494541-1714257-IMG_4750.PNG

Bralette styles aren't a realistic alternative for everyone. Yes, they fit into the athleisure fashion craze. But some argue that pushing the trend betrays women by selling them something less useful--and more cheaply made in some cases.

Not wearing bras can be liberating to some, but I find greater empowerment and freedom in wearing gorgeous, well-structured intimates. I don't care if anyone else wears a bra. But let's quit pretending that it's some arbitrary fashion choice. Female ingenuity and design are what fuel today's modern bra styles and designs.

Maybe it's time to stop demonizing the bra, and it's alternative (going braless). Both views hold women back and take away our personal choice. For most women, putting on a bra is like picking out footwear. Sure, I'll go barefoot on the beach. But I prefer flip-flops for the sidewalk and heels when I head out to a nice restaurant. Bras allow me to work, play, run, and enjoy my life with ease. And the right bra will change where, and how far I go.

What's your view? What do you think about the news stories claiming that women prefer not wearing bras? Is there a way to get rid of the stigma attached to going braless?

The Olsens And Their Giant Coats DGAF About Weather Forecasts

‘Twas a balmy Tuesday evening in Los Angeles, where the local weather 86 degrees, when three Olsens delighted fans with a rare appearance in the wild.

While the rest of us were sweating and chafing our you-know-whats off in shorts and T-shirts, the Olsen twins were seemingly quite comfortable wearing giant unseasonable coats.

Actress Elizabeth Olsen, who was wearing a slightly less enveloping but still puzzling jacket, joined her fashion designer sisters to celebrate the opening of their new flagship Elizabeth and James store, located at The Grove

“But it can get cool at night in L.A.!” you cry. Fair enough. So let’s examine the outfits of a few other attendees, shall we?

The proof is in the appropriately-dressed, sleeveless pudding. And yet we still find ourselves yearning for a long cream coat all of a sudden.

Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Talk Taylor Swift And Nude Selfies In Harper's Bazaar

$

Power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are as candid as ever as the September cover stars for Harper’s Bazaar’s Icons issue.

In the interview, the two discussed everything from Taylor Swift and nude selfies to dick pics, debt and vanity. The rapper got a little too honest with his answers sometimes, forcing Kardashian to occasionally rein him in and repeat a question to keep him on track.

And while you would think you know everything about the couple because of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and a handful of social media accounts, there were still a few answers we found surprising.

1. Kanye West’s $53 million debt is gone.

Or so they say. When the couple was asked about their biggest insecurities, Kim said that hers was “looking fat sometimes” while Kanye said his involved money.

“I used to have insecurity about my finances, then I announced that I had debt, and now I don’t have any insecurities,” West said, before Kim added, “Then you didn’t have any debt; it seemed to all figure it out.”

We guess Kim wasn’t lying when she tweeted that she’d transferred $53 million to their joint account

 2. Kim used to be a big fan of Taylor Swift.

When interviewer Laura Brown asked what the two’s favorite TSwift songs were (so passive-aggressive), West said he didn’t have one. In what we assume was a wistful tone, Kim simply said, “I was such a fan of hers.”

3. Kanye isn’t into “thinking.”

Though this statement might not surprise some of West’s haters (we see you, Swifties), West said this gem of a quote after saying he didn’t “have an insecurity about his public perception.”

“Here’s something that’s contrary to popular belief: I actually don’t like thinking,” the rapper said. I think people think I like to think a lot. And I don’t. I do not like to think at all.”

4. Kim not doing nude photos would be like “Adele not singing.”

And people say the Kardashians don’t have any talent! Before admitting that he’s done some nude selfies (”You’d get a good cock shot here and there”), Kanye waxed poetic about his love for Kim’s nude selfies.

“Like, I love the ones from the side, the back ones, and the front. I just love seeing her naked; I love nudity,” West said. “And I love beautiful shapes. I feel like it’s almost a Renaissance thing, a painting, a modern version of a painting. I think it’s important for Kim to have her figure. To not show it would be like Adele not singing.”

5. Kim is more vain than Kanye.

...Though we don’t actually believe it, Kardashian said that the title of “MVP” (Most Vain Person) in their household belonged to her. Kanye agreed, then said something that proved he might be deserving of the title.

“Yeah, I think she has vanity,” West said. “And with me, I don’t give a fuck, bro; it is what it is. I’m the best—now what? I don’t know if that’s a vain statement. I don’t particularly like photos of myself, though.”

Case dismissed.

When your dog is the most important thing in your home, it’s crucial to keep him or her groomed in tip-top shape. For inspiration, take these dramatically cute photos from L.A.-based animal photographer Grace Chon.

Chon frequently chooses to highlight the Japanese style of dog grooming, which uses creative hairstyles to make pups look as cute as possible.

“There is a lot of whimsy and creativity involved in making the dogs look almost like they’re stuffed animals,” Chon told HuffPost.

We wouldn't argue with that:

An NFL player captured a very real parenting moment before date night with his wife.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie took a video of his wife Terricka putting on makeup while breastfeeding one of their 2-month-old twins. The mom was prepping for the couple’s first date night since welcoming the babies.

Terricka, a mom of five who made headlines earlier this year after unexpectedly becoming pregnant with the twins after her husband’s vasectomy, posted the video on her Instagram.

“I got that #MilkMoney.. 1st time I’m leaving my babies for more than a hour,” she wrote in the caption. “But 1st let me empty this Milk real quick. SuperMom #breastfeedingmommy #mommystillneedsalife”

Critics Can't Decide If Khloe Kardashian Is 'Too Fat' Or 'Too Skinny'

$

July 28, 2016: The day Khloe Kardashian got “too skinny” for her critics.

The 32-year-old reality star just can’t catch a break. After years of being called the “fat” Kardashian sister, Khloe has gotten into incredible shape over the past few years, claiming she’s lost around 40 pounds.

But now, some sites are saying that she’s taken her weight loss too far. Khloe voiced her frustrations on Twitter Thursday morning, upset over the fact that she just can’t win over the media at any weight.

After she tweeted, fans quickly rushed to comfort Khloe on her various social media accounts.

“You’re not ‘too’ anything, just always the perfect amount of you,” one fan tweeted, while another wrote, “You look amazing and you are totally my body inspiration,” in a heartfelt Instagram comment.

Khloe told People that, growing up, she knew she looked different than her sisters, but her family made sure she always felt “beautiful.” But as soon as “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” hit airwaves in 2007, things changed.

“Right before the show started, I thought I was in good shape, but I guess not good enough for Hollywood’s eyes,” Khloe said. “I didn’t realize I was the ‘fat’ sister until I went on TV and the media started saying that about me.”

Though Khloe no longer gets teased for that reason, being the “right” weight in Hollywood is a delicate balance, with women in the public eye often facing unsettling amounts of pressure. Female celebrities risk being fat-shamed if they ever gain a few pounds ― like Selena Gomez when she posted this Instagram ― but are torn apart in tabloids if they lose too much weight. It seems like there’s no winning.

DNC Tweets That'll Make You Forget The Convention Is Even About Politics

The only thing better than watching the Democratic National Convention is watching Twitter during the Democratic National Convention. Whether you follow politics or simply follow Michelle Obama’s every move, nothing brings a community together like an on-point, LOL-worthy tweet.

As four days of inspiring speeches, touching moments and the realization that Tim Kaine is a total babe comes to a close Thursday, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the slew of fabulous fashion moments that came along with the convention.

There was Meryl’s patriotic dress, Madeleine Albright’s larger-than-life pin and a bunch of snark mixed in for good measure.

Behold, a collection of funny, too-real fashion tweets from the DNC.

HuffPost Journalists Nominated For Prominent Awards By NABJ, NAHJ

The Huffington Post has been nominated for three awards by the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

The two organizations, who have teamed up to host the first-ever joint convention that kicks off on Aug. 3, recognized HuffPost among their list of journalists included in this year’s group of finalists for various awards.

Zeba Blay, a HuffPost Voices culture writer whose work is featured heavily in Black Voices, was nominated for best Commentary/Weblog by NABJ for her powerful personal essay published in November titled, “The Psychological Toll Of Racism In The Wake Of Mizzou.” Blay’s essay explored how writing about race as a black journalist affected her as a black woman with a mental illness, especially in the aftermath of the campus racism protests at the University of Missouri.

HuffPost Politics reporters Mariah Stewart, Julia Craven and Ryan Reilly were nominated for best Online Project: News by NABJ for their collaborative piece titled, “The Ferguson Protests Worked.” The detailed article, which included original artwork made by the HuffPost multimedia team, discussed how Black Lives Matter protests ― that erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, against the tragic police killing of Michael Brown ― helped to lead the city to much-needed reform.

Lastly, Carolina Moreno’s coverage of outstanding and influential Latinos in her project, “Latinos Break The Mold” was recognized by NAHJ as a finalist under the category “Latino Issues – Print/Digital Journalism.” Moreno’s multimedia piece, which included striking imagery assembled by HuffPost photographers Damon Dahlen and Christy Havranek, helped to shatter harmful stereotypes often painted of Latino men and women by celebrating the beautiful diversity among the Latino community.

The three nominations are recognized among a list featuring incredible work from outlets like The New York Times, CNN, BuzzFeed and more.

Awards will be announced at the NABJ Salute To Excellence Gala and the NAHJ Gala Reception, both of which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Congrats to all those nominated!

1970s Hillary Clinton Had The Wardrobe Of Your Dreams

Hillary Clinton might very well be on her way to being the first female president of the United States, but when it comes to style, she’s been ruling the game for pretty much ever

Sure, today she is known for her affection for the pantsuit, but there’s a way more complex wardrobe happening with Hill than you might think. Over the years there have been mini-skirts! Bold patterns! And an unshakable, undeniable, totally on-brand love of the color blue.

Her keen fashion sense shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. After all, this is a woman who has some of the biggest names in fashion on her team and who is reportedly getting presidential fashion advice from the HBIC herself, Anna Wintour

Ahead of her speech at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night, join us in swooning over some of her best looks throughout the years.

Twitter Is Getting To Know Tim Kaine In The Most Superficial Way Ever

$

When Hillary Clinton announced Tim Kaine as her candidate for vice president, the news was met with a collective “who?”

Then, almost suddenly, that collective ignorance evolved as Twitter began to learn more about the mysterious senator from Virginia. First, people noticed he was white:

Then, Twitter started on the path toward acceptance (i.e., comparing him to the endearing “Parks & Recreation” character Garry “Jerry”/”Larry”/”Lenny”/”Terry”/”Barry”/”Gerry” Gergich “Gengurch”/”Girgich”), who was coincidentally played by another Tim (O’Heir):

And then Twitter gave Kaine even more approval ― ultimate dad status:

Then Twitter observed Kaine’s left eyebrow has a tendency to be excited:

But it was during his speech Wednesday night that Twitter had a full on lust fit for Kaine, once people discovered on Google that Kaine had a period of life when he was young, and that during this younger time he had a symmetrical face that some would call hot:

So from “who is Tim Kaine?” to “oh he looks boring,” to Jerry Gergich, your dad and, finally, “that guy is definitely Henry Caville,” we have judged Kaine solely on his appearance.

It has been a response wholly different than from what Bill Clinton received during his speech the night before (a speech on getting to know the “real Hillary”). And that’s to be expected ― people already know Clinton on a deeper level.

Hopefully Kaine will stick around to become more than just a Jerry Gergich in the annals of politics. And maybe, as the election goes on, we will scrutinize his ideology and history as hard as we have done his face.

Madeleine Albright's Glass Ceiling Brooch Just Shattered The Internet

We should have known that if anyone could beat Madeleine Albright at her own brooch game, it would be Madeleine Albright herself.

The former secretary of state and her epic pin collection were back at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night to watch Hillary Clinton make her highly anticipated nominee speech ― and to shatter our hearts into a million pieces with the most perfect shattered glass ceiling brooch.

“After tonight, this pin will be the only piece of glass ceiling left at #DNCinPHL! #Tweetmypins #imwithher,” Albright (or her brilliant social media manager) tweeted, earning an instant slew of retweets and faves.

She is, of course, referring to the glass ceiling Clinton has broken as the first female presidential nominee for a major U.S. political party. This congratulatory gesture from Albright, who was the first woman to serve as secretary of state, is touching, emotional, and the very epitome of girl power.

Whether you’re “with her” or not, you can’t help but appreciate this pin in all its glory.

Hillary Clinton is the official Democratic presidential nominee, and as expected, the unofficial queen of pantsuits.

After four days of anticipation, speeches, and patriotic clothing at the Democratic National Convention, Clinton finally addressed the nation Thursday night. And boy, she did not disappoint.

Ever faithful to her signature style, the fashionable presidential hopeful looked radiant, standing out from the colorful crowd in an all-white suit with nude pumps.

She was introduced with a touching speech from daughter Chelsea, who also looked gorgeous in a sleeveless red dress.

Meryl Streep, Madeleine Albright and Michelle Obama were also style stars of the DNC, but we’ll let this tweet express how we’re feeling about this look in particular:

Congresswoman Trolls Melania Trump By Wearing Her Dress To DNC

Melania Trump’s billowy white dress was perhaps the second-biggest piece of news to come out of her partially plagiarized Republican National Convention speech last week.

In fact, people were so enchanted with the former model and fashion designer’s $2,190 off-white Roksanda “Margot” dress that it sold out less than an hour after her speech.

Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) was apparently one of the lucky few people to get her hands on the outfit, and, in what has to go down as one of the sickest political convention burns ever, she wore it to her address at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday evening.

While some outlets are treating this like a fashion faux pas, it’s almost too good not to be a deliberate dig at the wife of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, who herself took flak for ripping off lines from Michelle Obama, the nation’s first black first lady.

Beatty later blamed the whole thing on her husband, telling WCMH he had bought the dress and told her to wear it.

“Now it’s blowing up all over the nation that it’s the same as Mrs. Trump’s, but I don’t know,” she said.

Beatty also pointed out that the dresses were not identical.

“I have heard others say [Trump’s dress] was a zero, or she is a zero,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “But I am a 10.”

And at least she wrote her own remarks, Beatty said. During her speech, she took a shot at Trump, calling him “the most divisive and ill-prepared candidate we’ve seen in modern times.” She didn’t mention Melania, but if Twitter is any indicator, she didn’t need to.

This story has been updated with additional remarks from Beatty.

These Are The Lipstick Shades Each State Wants Most

People all over the country want to be nude.

Nude lips, that is.

In honor of National Lipstick Day on July 29, the team at Polyvore has put together a fun infographic that breaks down which color lipstick each state desires most.

As you can see, nearly three-quarters of the U.S. (74 percent) loves that naked look, according to searches on Polyvore.

The company said there’s been a 444 percent increase in searches for nude lipsticks since just last year, something they attribute to Kylie Jenner’s lip kits. SHOCKING.

Despite all of this, we’re sort of concerned about North Dakota. They’re the only state to have black as their most-searched shade.

It’s going to be okay, ND. We’re still in our rebellious years at heart, too.

No One Looks As Good In A White Jumpsuit As Kyle Richards

For most of us, the prospect of wearing an all-white, low-cut jumpsuit to a party (or anywhere else) prompts fears of spilled drinks, accidental camel toe and having every single one of our body parts likely outlined underneath.

But this photo of Beverly Hills “Housewife” Kyle Richards, however, proves the reality starlet can nail this perfect summer style.

Richards attended the Daily Mail’s White Party in Los Angeles Wednesday, hosted by on-again-off-again bestie Lisa Vanderpump. The 47-year-old looked effortlessly chic in the plunging look which she paired with loose waves and minimal ― albeit definitely pricey ― jewels.

Richards and Vanderpump were joined by fellow “Housewives” stars Erika Girardi, Dorit Kemsley, Lisa’s husband Ken, and of course, their dog, Giggy. The whole group was delightfully on theme, save for Girardi’s single black sleeve. Tsk, tsk.

Hold On To Your Moon Dust! Gwyneth Paltrow Wants To Distance Herself From Goop

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name Gwyneth Paltrow? A brief stint on “Glee?” The conscious uncoupling heard ‘round the world? No, of course not.

It’s Goop. You think of dreamy, bougie, polarizing Goop.

Well, if Paltrow has her way, that might soon be a thing of the past. The lifestyle site’s famous HBIC reportedly feels that in order for her to grow her $15,000-sex-toy-hocking entity, it’s imperative that she step away from it

“In order to build the brand I want to build, its scalability is limited if I connect it to the brand,” she said to an audience at the 2016 Sage Summit in Chicago Wednesday, Computer Business Review reports. “So I always think, ‘How can I grow the brand? How can I separate myself from the brand? And I think it's going to be more its own brand.”

Cue 14 karat gold hearts shattering across the internet. Who will almost convince us to drop $200 on magical dust? Who will explain vaginal steaming? How will we know how to yawn

Cut our hearts out with a $72 scissor, why don’t you?!

Paltrow went on to explain that she hopes Goop will continue to be a champion, with or without her glowing celebrity endorsement. “My dream is that one day no one will remember that I had anything to do with it,” she said.

All this time we thought her dream was for the whole world to eat clean. Breathe in that purified air while you still can, people. These are trying times.
