The Top 10 Mistakes Newlyweds Make After The Big Day

$

By Kristen Klein for Bridal Guide

As you settle into married life, there are still a few important wedding-related tasks that you need to keep in mind.

Taking Too Long to Send Your Thank-You Notes
You may have heard that you have a year to write these. But the truth is, you have three months before people start wondering if you’re ever going to send them. Immediately after returning from your honeymoon, put yourselves on a manageable schedule. Plan on writing five a day each: You can handle your family and friends, and your spouse can handle his or hers. Divide your mutual friends in half, and you'll bang out all of your thank-yous in no time.

Putting Off Creating Your Wedding Album
As soon as you receive the proofs from your photographer, start selecting your favorite pictures for your album. Have Post-its ready the first time you flip through your photos — mark anything that garners a reaction from either of you. That way, you’ll gauge your emotional connections to your photos better than if you spend hours laboring over which of the 20 shots of you with your MOH is best. Plus: If an album was included in your photography package and you need a little extra motivation to get started, check your contract — there’s likely a deadline for when you'll need to submit your photo selections.

Waiting to Clean Your Gown
A lot of brides put off this step because they’re not sure what they want to do with the gown. But whether you plan on preserving it, selling it, or donating it, the first step is always to get it professionally cleaned. Ideally, you should drop it off the day after your wedding (or ask your MOH to do it for you if you’re heading off to your honeymoon right away). The longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to remove any stains.

Alienating Your Friends and Family
After the wedding, it’s natural to want to spend plenty of time with your new spouse — especially if you’ve just moved in together for the first time. But be sure to make time for the other important people in your lives as well. Schedule regular nights out with friends, take time to visit your family members, and don’t stop going out for happy hour with your coworkers. What you don’t want to happen: Your first anniversary rolls around, and you suddenly realize you haven’t seen some of your friends since the wedding day.

Skipping Vendor Reviews
As a bride-to-be, you likely depended on online reviews to help you find the best vendors for your wedding. Pay it forward by writing reviews for all of the vendors you used — the good, the bad, and the ugly. Write them while the details are still fresh in your mind.

Passing on Insurance
No, we're not talking about your marriage; we’re talking about your rings. Specialty items like engagement and wedding rings usually aren't covered by your basic home owners' or renters' insurance policy; you'll need to take out a rider to be protected. Your insurance company will typically request an appraisal of the jewelry, and the annual cost is about 1 to 2% of the replacement cost (ex. a ring valued at $5,000 would cost $50-100 to insure).

Neglecting Your Workouts
With visions of a white gown and everyone's eyes on you before the wedding, you were likely pretty committed to hitting the gym and making smart food choices. Without that end goal, though, it’s far too easy to convince yourself that it’s okay to skip a day or two... and before you know it, it’s been six months since you’ve set foot in a gym and you’ve gained “the newlywed nine.” If you're having trouble mustering up the motivation, try turning exercise into a fun activity with your spouse; join an exercise class, take up a new sport, or simply try jogging together.

Not Requesting Copies of Your Marriage Certificate
Your officiant is likely responsible for filing your marriage license after you've said "I do," but you'll still need to contact the Registrar's office to request (and pay for) a copy of your marriage certificate. Not only do you need this as legal proof of your marriage, but it's a good way to verify that your license has, in fact, been filed! Also, consider ordering more than one copy — if you're planning on changing your last name, you're going to need one to bring to social security, the DMV, and many other places, and you may feel more comfortable if you have another copy in safe keeping. Plus, you'll often save money ordering more than one at a time rather than waiting until you need that second copy. For example, in New Jersey, the first copy is $25 (plus $5 processing); but any additional copies ordered at the same time cost only $2.

Saving Everything
You definitely want to keep a few mementos from your big day. But do you really need to keep all 15 of your adorable table number holders and the 27 extra programs your guests left behind? I have at least two boxes full of “wedding stuff” that I’ve carried through two post-wedding moves, and my parents have at least six cases of mason jars sitting in their basement from my sister’s wedding. Save one or two of each item, and donate, sell, or toss the rest. Think about which items you'll actually reuse after the wedding, and be sure to hang onto anything with real sentimental value.

Rushing to “The Next Step”
The post-wedding blues hit so many newlyweds — after spending countless months planning the biggest event of your lives so far, it’s hard not having something major to look forward to once it’s over. So it’s not surprising that many couples get anxious to move on to the next big milestone, like buying a house or having a baby. But try to give yourselves some breathing room before throwing yourselves into another major project. Buying a house a few months after the wedding turned out to be a big mistake for my husband and me — and selling it a year and a half later definitely created a major headache we didn’t need.

Chrissy Teigen Talks Babies With John Legend: 'I Would Love To Have Four'

Chrissy Teigen -- model, Twitter aficionado and wife of John Legend -- opened up to Life & Style about what the future holds for her photogenic family.

The magazine caught up with Teigen at the London Fog Designer's Collection event in New York on March 4 and asked her, point blank, if kids are something she'd like to have.

"Oh, yeah. I'm very open about that," Teigen, 28, replied. "John is going to be a wonderful father. He's such a wonderful uncle. He has lots of nieces and nephews and he's so great with them."

Life & Style then asked Teigen when, exactly, we can expect the joyous Twitter announcement. "If it happened two years ago, I would have wanted them two years ago," she said. "But now looking back I'm like, whoa, thank goodness because this would be exhausting now. But I want a bunch, so if it happens it happens. I'm ready ... I've been ready and if there's anyone in the world who deserves to be a father, it's him."

As for her number, Teigen divulged: "Everyone says that once you have one, I'll change my mind, but I would love to have four. I come from a very small family. I think I'm the last one with this name, so I would love to have four, but we'll see after one. One might kill me."

Oh, we simply cannot wait for those baby pics on Instagram.

This isn't the first time Teigen has been candid about her desire for a family. In November of last year, Teigen told People magazine she's "definitely antsy" about having kids with her new husband. "I can't wait to be the parent that I always make fun of!" she said.

Last month, Teigen told ABC News: "We definitely have plans for kids. ... I want a ton, he wants a ton, so I guess it's time to start."

9 Beauty Tips That Will Cut Down Your Morning Routine

$
0
0
It's only been about a day since the Daylight Savings Time change, and we feel like we're a little jet-lagged. Yes, we only went up an hour, but we're pretty sure our whole week is going to be out of whack. So, don't get us started on our morning routine struggles.

If you're in need of some help, we've rounded up some time-saving tips that will help you get your butt out of the house quick -- even if you just woke up, like, 20 minutes ago. While some of these require some prep (it won’t make a huge dent in your lazy Sunday), take a deep breath, clear your head and get to work! But seriously, you need to get to work, class or wherever it is you need to be.

1. Invest (or convert your own) multipurpose products.
Face chubbies and crayons are great for when you need to save some time. You can use them on your lips, cheeks and eyes, and depending on the force in which you apply, you can achieve different shades so you don’t look too monochromatic.

On the same note, buy 2-in-1 products like e.l.f.'s Eyebrow Gel and Mascara combo, so you don’t have to dig around looking for separate products. Tinted moisturizers are awesome for when you don't have time to spend applying your foundation.

2. Reuse old beauty subscription boxes for storage and organization.
Have a couple of boxes racked up from months and months of Birchbox subscriptions? Use them to organize your goods according to product -- you'll have your lipstick box, eyeshadow box, etc. That way, you don't have to rummage around for that one lip gloss you just NEED to wear today.

P.S. Any small-sized box would do for this little DIY project.

3. When you plan your outfit the night before, plan your makeup, too.
This might sound a bit ridiculous, but even if you just say, "Hey, some mascara and an orange lip would look perfect with this dress," then you waste less time figuring out what to put on your face the next morning.

4. Line your products up according to use.
Depending on where and how you store your products, put your everyday go-tos where you can always see them. Convenient enough, right?

5. Keep your basics with you.
If you carry a makeup bag, make sure it has all the basics. If you're running out the door, you can definitely dress up your face in the office bathroom later.

6. Dry shampoo.
Quick and clean, that's all you need to know.

7. Use concealer in place of eyeshadow.
If you're not into intense eyeshadow hues but still want to look a little made-up, try putting concealer on your top and bottom lids. You'll have a nice natural finish with one knockout product. Just make sure to blend!

8. Blow-dry the front of your hair, and nothing else.
Especially for people with wavy hair, you might only “need” to blow-dry the front, or none of it at all. But, if it's still freezing cold in your area, we understand if you have to do your whole head.

9. And for our curly-haired friends, get a good leave-in conditioner.
Find one that works with your hair type, because it can transform your bedhead and/or wash-and-go's.

The Rise of Contemporary Plus Size Fashion

$

0
Contemporary plus size fashion -- a segment within the plus size fashion industry that is quickly on the rise and I am here for it. And I am not alone here in the excitement. But, as plus size designers give it to us, there has been a bit of pushback with pricing and a few other details that needed to be clarified and shared, explaining just what Contemporary fashion is... and how it contributes to the Rise of Contemporary Plus Size Fashion...

Why Contemporary Plus Size Fashion?

Well, ask yourself this... "Where does a fashion forward plus size woman shop when she wants more from the mall chains and fast fashion but isn't ready to break the bank on high-end designer wear?"

She Rocks Contemporary.
This has been a long time coming -- ever since I started my blog, The Curvy Fashionista, while working for a department store in my former life. There were plenty of moments where I would stroll theses brand's sections wishing that it was carried in more sizes, my size. But while I have the retail background, I realize most do not and with the growth of the plus size fashion industry, it is now needed to break things down a bit to help you along your shopping journey...

In between bridge and better fashion, lies Contemporary Fashion. It is more than just a price range that separates this segment, although it plays a HUGE part of this classification. Contemporary fashion also appeals to a specific lifestyle customer. Fits are more body conscious. Hemlines short, but not too short. Mid to lower rises are apparent. The choice of fabrics and textures are bolder, less muted. Statements are made here. Prices are a bit higher than the mass chains and mass retailers. These pieces last quite a while and over many seasons in this category.

BUT, this is only emerging now in plus size fashion, and I feel that it is important for us to learn a bit more about this segment to better help us shop and maneuver through things. While we may know these departments as Juniors and Bridge, Contemporary fashion appeals to both, acting as a unique gateway into higher end labels.

THE RISE OF CONTEMPORARY PLUS SIZE FASHION
In this NY Times article contemporary fashion is broken down: "In the 1970′s a new category, "contemporary," came into being. "It was for the junior growing up who didn't feel comfortable in neither junior clothes nor her mother's clothes," explains Kalman Ruttenstein, senior vice president for fashion direction at Bloomingdales."

So in this, you will find that there are designers and retailers who do not appeal to you, whom you do not like, or that are too expensive for your liking... this is okay. THIS is normal; this is the normal growth of the fashion industry -- options, segmentation, and choice.

As I was researching this, to bring a well-rounded reference post to you, I found this great read over on ehow. On classifying contemporary fashion, eHow shares "In general, the contemporary price point is significantly lower than a luxury brand price point. This doesn't, however, mean that contemporary brands are too terribly affordable for the average gal. Contemporary pieces run, on average, somewhere between $150 to $800 depending on the item. While these prices are still high, they're much less expensive than luxury brands, which can run upwards of $4000 to $5000 depending on the product."

So when you see the likes of Monif C, Jibri, Rachel Pally, CarmaKoma, and even now, the new Eloquii giving us trends, fashion, and styling at different levels of prices that we may not normally have been accustomed to, know that this is normal and sits right there with the DVF's, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Tracy Reese's, Rebecca Minkoff's, BCBG's and various other designers that we salivate over -- In the Contemporary Plus Size Segment.

This doesn't mean that one segment is better than the other; it means that as the industry grows and starts giving us the fashion we covet so will the options and the ranges of fashion, price, quality, and accessibility.

Unless it is a hero piece that I know will sell out, I won't buy it at retail (blame this on my 13 years in retail), so I stalk my favorite sample sale sites to score a great deal! I shop sale. I mix my big box store purchases with my scores from various designers to create my own style and look...

If you love fast fashion, great! I do too! I do love mixing high/low pieces together. But it is important to understand that change is happening and as we ask for more and get it, we must be able to recognize what is happening, what to expect, and where to get it!

If you wish to know more about this, I wrote a fun hefty piece, Understanding the New Plus Size Segments!

What do you think? Does this help you out? Does this shed a bit of light on everything for you? Let's talk about it.

St. Patrick's Day: 10 Reasons Redheads Are The Luckiest of Them All

2014-03-10-luck_of_redheads_st_patricks_day_how_to_be_a_Redhead.png

St. Patrick's Day festivities kick off this weekend and cities across the globe dress themselves in green to celebrate the fun holiday. In a way, it's a redhead holiday, since being a redhead is strongly associated with the Irish; even though most Irish are dark haired with brown/blue eyes! Soon, we'll begin to see t-shirts and pins with "Luck of the Irish" stamped over them. Some many not believe in "luck," but many say it's lucky to rub your hand on a redhead's head because the color is so rare.

This year, whether they're true or not, we decided to embrace the many myths of St. Patrick's Day and it's association with redheads. Why not?! We're pretty awesome and lucky to be blessed with red hair.

Here are 10 ways redheads are Go N-Eiri An T-Adh Leat ('Lucky' in Gaelic-Irish):

1. With over 7 billion people in this world, it is very easy to blend in and not be noticed. Luckily for redheads, we stand out in every crowd!

2. A long time rumor has suggested that redheads are going extinct. Luckily for redheads, that is in fact a myth. We aren't going anywhere.

3. With so many beauty and fashion websites there, how do you choose? Redheads do not have the typical skin or coloring, and finding advice can take hours! Luckily for redheads, there is HowtobeaRedhead.com.

4. Brown, black, blonde hair accessories seem to crowd the beauty aisles. Luckily for redheads, there are now redhead bobby pins, hair ties and bun makers on the market!

5. Luckily for redheads, we can blame our outrages on our "fiery tempers."

6. Redheads, do you ever spot another redhead on the street? Luckily for us, you automatically smile at each other and feel like it's a secret club.

7. Luckily for redheads, you don't have to go overboard with accessories and colors. Your hair stands out on its own.

8. Many think having pale skin and freckles isn't "cool." But, for women who take care of their skin and apply sunscreen, redheads always seem to look the youngest! In Ireland, it's very popular to apply Vitamin E oil directly on the skin. It's reported to be a natural anti-aging vitamin.

9. What other hair color can say they have a beauty/fashion tour designed for them? Only redheads! How to Be a Redhead will soon be presenting the live, red carpet Rock it like a Redhead Beauty Tour.

10. Let's be honest, redheads are the coolest. We make up only two percent of the world's population, and being super unique is definitely something to be proud of... whether you're lucky or not.

Rachel Dickinson, Fashion Blogger, Contours And Highlights Her Face Like A Professional

It was blistering cold the day we ran into fashion blogger Rachel Dickinson. But the sun seemed to shine beautifully against her skin and hair, giving her this lit-from-within glow. While we would've attributed her healthy look to really good skincare, it turns out Dickinson is a professional at contouring and highlighting.

After applying a liquid foundation "in circular motions to create a porcelain, airbrushed effect," she puts a bronzing powder in a "3" shape (from her temples down to her cheekbone and underneath her jawline). Then she follows up with a touch of highlighter on her cheekbones and blush on the apples of her cheeks (brushing upward).

That must take a huge chunk of time in the morning, but the results are flawless.

The dating rumors may be false, but Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong'o are definitely forming a fast friendship.

The new Oscar winners posed for selfies together at Paris Fashion Week and proved that photo booth poses aren't just for photo booths. Nyong'o posted the compiled photos to Instagram, with the caption, "#selfies @jaredleto. Done."

"Done" is certainly right. That bottom right shot of Jared Leto roaring at a cringing Nyong'o just made our week.

Nyong'o and Leto just took home their first Oscars for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Looks like that's a pretty solid foundation for a beautiful, budding friendship. (Emphasis on beautiful.)

More People Go Commando Than You Might Think, According To A New Poll In Vanity Fair

Here's one way to save money on laundry -- stop wearing underwear.

Vanity Fair teamed up with 60 Minutes to conduct a fashion-based poll
, asking Americans everything from what their biggest fashion nightmare would be, to identifying big industry names to... how often they go commando. According to the results, more people do it than you might think.

25 percent of those polled admitted they go sans underwear at least sometimes. Of that 25 percent, 13 percent said they do it "occasionally," 5 percent confessed they ditch their underwear "once a week" and 7 percent said they went without undergarments "all the time."

Of course, there are plenty of reasons to leave the house without your undies every so often. It can be pretty liberating, for one. Plus there's that whole thing about shapewear being detrimental to your health.

Still, we can't imagine ditching our beloved undie collection permanently. What about you? Would you go commando for good? Sound off below!

Oh, Subway. We've seen your ventures into fashion before, but dare we say just stick to 6-inch sandwiches?

Over the weekend, Subway premiered its latest eatovation called the "Flatizza" at South by Southwest (SXSW). While the meal itself might be yummy, we aren't completely sold on wearing the materials that package it. Designed by Jennifer Henry of FlockFlockFlock (who according to her Twitter bio specializes in alternative material couture), the creations are actually quite incredible.

The main question: Would you wear it?

3 Reasons Why We're Excited For Lorde's MAC Makeup Collection

MAC Cosmetics is just rackin' up those makeup collaborations, aren't they?

New York Magazine's The Cut reports that "Royals" singer Lorde will launch a makeup collection with none other than MAC Cosmetics. Since we're in love with both MAC and Lorde, we really CANNOT wait until this collab hits stores this summer.

While we know very little about what products make up the collection, here's what we do know:

1. MAC is always on point with their color game.

Have you seen the beautiful blue lips they created during New York Fashion Week? Take a look and then get back to us.

2. Lorde hearts MAC.

As The Cut has reported, Lorde's worked with MAC Senior Makeup Artist Amber Dreadon, who created those dreamy purple lips for the Grammy Awards.

And here's a quote from the singer herself:

"I have loved M A C Cosmetics since I was a little kid. I remember saving up to buy my very first M A C lipstick [Snob] at 14, and it was used by about 20 of my friends! M A C has a very clear aesthetic, that has always felt fashion forward to me. So I was really excited to work with them on these products, which I use pretty much every day and night. I hope you will too."

3. We want all of the lipsticks. ALL. OF. THEM.

We can only imagine how many vamp-like colors will make the roster. But, no matter what, we'll be getting them all. That's if the limited-edition collection doesn't sell out like Rihanna's.

Mommy-and-me time has gotten an upgrade.

Photographing herself in artistically staged yoga poses that often include her two children, Laura Kasperzak has wowed the Internet.

That's no stretch. Kasperzak's Instagram now counts more than 700,000 followers.

Kasperzak enjoys teaching her daughter and son new postures, according to wellness website and business Two Fit Moms, which she runs with pal Masumi Goldman.

Kasperzak, 36, of Lincoln Park, N.J., told Today that the striking pictures are all due to her selfie-confidence. “Photography is my other hobby and passion so I really take a lot of pride that I shoot my own stuff," she said.

Kasperzak has a background in cheerleading and gymnastics and has been practicing yoga for 17 years.

Confession: I'm a Shopping Bag Addict

A few weeks ago, an old friend arrived at my front door with a hostess gift in hand. Over the years, we have given each other enough trinkets to fill a small room, and I reminded her that we should put an end to this tradition -- that is, until I saw the bag she was holding. I was not so concerned with the contents as I was with the shopping bag itself.

It was perfect -- small to medium in size, cream-colored, made of thick paper with a cardboard bottom and sturdy red ribbon handles. The store's name was displayed in a subtle way -- not at all prominent. I immediately knew that this shopping bag would serve me well on numerous occasions. Perhaps I'd transport cookies to my children's school, wine out to a dinner party or maybe even a change of shoes on a snowy day. The possibilities seemed endless.

I can admit it: I am obsessed with shopping bags, and I am not alone. I know of women across the country that seek out good shopping bags as I do, and they hoard them too. If you don't believe me, take a peek in the backs of their closets. You'll find collections that resemble mine.

My shopping bag collection is well organized, and that is because all of the good bags are folded up and put into the queen bee of all bags -- the large and very sturdy one that holds the entire collection. Without this very important bag, the rest of the bags are simply a mess on the bottom of the floor.

As it stands now, my queen bee bag is an oversized J. Crew one, and it has held up nicely for the last few months. My children and husband know not to grab that bag when they reach in the closet for something in which to carry their projects or changes of clothes. I taught them well, just like my mother did. I knew better than to grab the oversized Bendel's bag from her closet floor when I needed a bag. Even if my other options were not of the right size, I had to make them work.

When I think back on certain friendships, I can see how they evolved through the use of shopping bags. I knew that I was becoming close with one friend when she dropped off hand-me-downs from her daughter in a plastic Rite Aid bag. I hugged her in the parking lot of our children's school, finally knowing that she was no longer trying to impress me, and that I would find a use for even the Rite Aid plastic bag.

The first few years of hand-m- downs from the new friend came in glossy bags from Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and even Neiman Marcus. Slowly, items were left at my door packaged more casually in Gap and Old Navy bags, and at long last, we had made it down to the drug store bags.

Every shopping bag has its time and its place, even the drug store ones. The next time you make a purchase at a store -- any store-- take a minute to appreciate the free gift you have been given, and think about how you want to use this bag. Perhaps no one use will come to mind instantly, and that is OK. Whatever you do, do not throw it out. Put it in the back of your closet like my mother always did and rest assured, its time will come.

We Wish These Were Actually The Jerseys For The World Cup (PHOTOS)

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil is less than 100 days away! With excitement already building (and merchandise already selling), a graphic designer and Redditor named Rojito wonderfully re-imagined the uniforms for all 32 national teams.

For many soccer fans, Rojito's jerseys might be preferable to all of the official team kits unveiled so far. American fans in particular might pick Rojito's design over the golf shirt jersey Nike revealed last month.

The first match of the World Cup, between Brazil and Croatia, is on June 12.

Beyoncé's Not Bossy, She's The Boss -- And We Believe Her

$

"I'm not bossy. I'm the boss."

From the Lean In organization and Girl Scouts of the USA comes the new public service campaign "Ban Bossy." Designed to encourage young girls to take on leadership roles, the PSA points out the negative implications hiding behind the word "bossy" and the way that it is so often used as a stand-in for "pushy" or "stubborn" -- neither of which motivate girls to become leaders.

mobama

Lean In and Girl Scouts of the USA got everyone from Beyoncé to NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson to Jane Lynch to take the pledge to ban the word bossy. The PSA also accuses the word of being a "squasher." According to the "Ban Bossy" campaign's website: "Words like bossy send a message: don't raise your hand or speak up. By middle school, girls are less interested in leading than boys -- a trend that continues into adulthood."

We agree with some of the biggest bosses in the U.S. when they say "there are no limits." Whether or not the word "bossy" is the real culprit for the leadership gender gap, there's no question that women should be encouraged from a young age to be strong and ambitious leaders.

'The Bachelor' Finale Revealed The Real Winners (And Losers) Of Juan Pablo's Season

$

Today we can finally bid farewell to Juan Pablo, all-around a**hat and widely-regarded "worst Bachelor ever."

After seeing "El Bachelor" go on an "aventura" for 2.5 months, all the while digging himself a slut-shaming hole bigger than the Grand Canyon, viewers got to watch in horror/relief as Juan Pablo got subtly insulted by his family members, nearly got dumped by Clare, wooed Clare back in order to dump her, and chose Nikki as the woman he would not like to marry (but would totally fake date for Us Weekly cover purposes). While this season of "The Bachelor" has already deftly exposed the show's weird sex issues and some uncomfortable dating truths, last night's episode gave us some insight into who the real winners -- and losers -- of the season are.

WINNERS

Chris Harrison
After seasons of being primarily relegated to saying "this is the final rose," this finale was host Chris Harrison's time to shine. Here is a quick sampling of Chris' flagrant contempt for Juan Pablo:
--"So... no regrets?"
--"I don't know what I'm looking at."
--"I'm gonna say congratulations. I think that's the right thing to say in this situation."
--"Shower that one off?"
--"Well, another season of 'The Bachelor' has come to an end. Not gonna lie, I'm OK moving on."

Oh, Chris. I think we all are.

Andi Dorfman
After being smart enough to dump Juan Pablo before he had the chance to dump her -- and epically telling him off for being a generally sh*tty date in the process -- Andi was rewarded with a whole lot of audience goodwill and the "The Bachelor" franchise's biggest prize: the chance to star in her own season of "The Bachelorette" and find someone to get engaged to for a couple of months. Here's hoping we get to see her grilling her guys on their political views and religious convictions.

Clare Crawley, Sharleen Joynt, Kelly Travis And Every Other Woman Who Juan Pabs Didn't Pick
"I would never want my children having a father like you," said Clare as she left Juan Pablo in St. Lucia. Bullets? Consider yourselves dodged.

LOSERS

Nikki Ferrell
Don't worry, Nikki. There is a very simple way to move yourself out of this category -- dump Juan Pabs. He may not be willing to say he loves you, but somehow I suspect you're not that into him either. (And you get bonus points for pushing back on Chris Harrison's insistence that saying "I love you" in front of a live studio audience means anything about the substance of a relationship.)

Juan Pablo
"Ay yay yay," Juan Pablo. What a "journey" it's been. He ended his adventure with no fiancé, few fans and, perhaps most tragically in his eyes, no "Dancing With The Stars" contract. Maybe the yellow M&M will still have him.

WINNERS/LOSERS

The Viewers
As anyone who has been sucked into "The Bachelor" web of poorly-conceived metaphors, utter ruin of the word "journey" and faux love knows, watching the reality show week after week is a truly masochistic experience. But somehow, watching a repulsive bachelor like Juan Pablo made for far more interesting television. We collectively realized that there was something more satisfying about watching the female contestants become self-aware and direct their frustrations toward a sexist prick than waste time cutting each other down.

But after 10 weeks of Juan Pablo's homophobic comments, tweets making fun of mentally-impaired people and general douchery to women, "Bachelor" viewers could only take so much of his reality. We're ready for a little fun. So bring it on, Andi Dorfman. We know your gun-toting, gang-prosecuting, no-longer-ombré-haired self can deliver.

This Is The Crazy Sh*t Magazines REALLY Mean When They Give Us Advice About Love And Sex

$

0
Everyone's received their fair share of truly terrible love advice, whether from Internet forums, or over-enthusiastic great-aunts. But we'd argue that the advice printed in your run-of-the-mill drugstore magazines is often the most egregious. These magazines are often gender-oriented; but the bad advice is bestowed equally upon men and women. Sometimes this advice perpetuates outdated stereotypes, sometimes it encourages crazy behavior and sometimes it does both. Ultimately, the sweeping generalizations do both men and women a disservice.

Here's our translation of what magazines are really telling you when they give advice about love and sex:

On Attraction

What Cosmo says to women: "The best thing to say to a guy you just met on the beach: 'I bet you're wondering how I avoid tan lines.'"

What we're hearing:

beach

What Men's Health says to men: "Can't take your eyes off her nearly-see-through dress? Don't -- she's scantily clad for a reason."

What we're hearing:

stare

On "getting lucky":

What Cosmo says to women: "To separate yourself from the pack, you'll need to pull a move so wild, he won't be able to stop thinking about it the next day."

What we're hearing:

impresshim

What Men's Health says to men: "Talk her into bed... get lucky tonight by choosing your words carefully."

What we're hearing:

trick

On the ups and downs of relationships:

What Cosmo says to women: "New research claims that male sexual impulses, i.e. owning a penis, could be the main reason why guys just can't stop chasing tail. So, try to find a dude without one."

What we're hearing:

penis

What Men's Health says to men: "Manage her paranoia -- stop the green-eyed monster rearing it's ugly head."

What we're hearing:

tame

On communication:

What Cosmo says to women: "It can't be repeated enough: Guys have a low threshold for mindless chatter. If you're rambling on about your friends, coworkers, or anything you read on a gossip site, he's gonna feign interest, then fake an emergency doctor's appointment."

What we're hearing:

life

What Men's Health says to men: "Make sure she knows how beautiful she is and how sexually skilled she is, especially if she isn't -- sexually skilled, that is."

What we read:

lie

On "wild" sex:

What Cosmo says to women: "Press a fork (firmly, but don't break the skin or anything) into different parts of his body -- his butt cheeks, his pecs, his thighs."

What we're hearing:

fork

What Men's Health says to men: "Get naked! Pour peppermint schnapps in her belly button. Sip it."

What we're hearing:

belly

_______________________________________________

It's startling to really examine the love lessons that are lurking beneath the cheerful quips and shiny stock photos we see in popular magazines. Some of the advice is too ridiculous to take seriously (we sincerely hope nobody was inspired to bring a fork into the bedroom...). But many of these tips contain echoes of persistent, insidious gender stereotypes that limit what we expect from ourselves and of the opposite sex. And that, my friends, ain't sexy.
