You’ve heard of Steve Buscemi eyes, now check out Steve Buscemi face!

The very talented make-up artist Katelyn Galloway — who you may remember from her take on Ron Swanson — is here with another transformation, this time going full Steve Buscemi.

In a matter of just about four minutes (sped up, of course), Galloway dyes her hair, wrinkles her face, narrows her nose, and, most importantly, adds some serious bags under her eyes.

Luckily, no wood chippers appear in this video.

A Nose for Beauty: Perfumer Luca Maffei at Pitti Fragranze in Florence

2016-09-14-1473860214-370340-LucaMaffei.jpg

At this year's Pitti Fragranze, the yearly fragrance affair organized by Pitti Immagine inside the Stazione Leopolda in Florence, I wanted to deepen my love affair with perfume. No better way to do it, I thought, than by interviewing world-renowned olfactory artist, and what is known in the business as a "nose", Luca Maffei.

Don't let Maffei's young age, he's hardly thirty years old, and good looks fool you. He's already a powerhouse when it comes to designing fragrances. Maffei comes from a family "in the business" as he likes to say, and trained in Grasse -- the promised land of scents in the fragrance world -- with Françoise Marin. After an internship in the south of France, he returned to his native Italy and since 2011 he's been making waves in the perfume world. Along with his father Marco Maffei as well as Maurizio Cerizza, one of the most important contemporary Italian noses, Luca is now part of the team at AFM Atelier Fragranze Milano.

Winner of multiple awards, and creator of at least half a dozen best-selling scents, Maffei was at Pitti Fragranze this year with a few different perfumes, including 'Gelsomini di Capri' by Carthusia and 'Taersìa' by Gabriella Chieffo Profumi. He's also responsible for creating the signature scent for Alitalia, Italy's national airline, though the fragrance hasn't been unveiled at Pitti Fragranze.

Personal favorites include his 'Cologne Intense' for legendary French fragrance house Houbigant Paris. In his groundbreaking reinvention of the Eau de Cologne, Maffei pairs the typical Italian citrus notes with Neroli from Morocco and lavender with pink pepper and Indian jasmin. But then, for the final punch, he throws in darker, spicy notes of patchouly and oakmoss, with a deep touch of amber. The result is a sultry perfume that feel as fresh as it is sexy. It's the perfect date night scent worn with a little black dress, or by a man with jeans, a white shirt and a jacket.

Another winner is a fragrance of love called 'Secrets du Paradis Rouge' which Maffei created for French brand Jul et Mad. This latest masterpiece was unveiled during Pitti Fragranze and is the fifth chapter in the story of the brand's founders, a couple who decided to tell their love story through scent. But more on this magical perfume in the interview below.

So, why write about fragrances, since I'm mostly a film and culture writer, you may wonder? Well because I believe that the world is limitless and putting a wall up of any sort around us and our work, only creates unhappiness and limits our ability to dream. And, there is an undeniably evocative power in perfume. We all want to appear at our best, so this accessory is important as something that is representative of us, helps us to express ourselves at our most basic. Whether we admit it or not, and save a few who claim to be allergic to the stuff, the search for that exclusive perfume, a rich fragrance that immediately shows off the luxury of its raw material, is an important part of that never-ending quest for us to appear our best selves.

What I wanted to ask Maffei were the most basic questions, those that anyone who doesn't really know the eighth art, the olfactory art, would want to ask. I dared, and the answers now make me cherish the fragrances I own, and those I covet, even more.

What inspires a person to create a new perfume?

Luca Maffei: This is a beautiful question. Everything is inspiration. The passion that people have who work in this art, is the passion to communicate through the olfactory sense. The nose is like a translator, an interpreter, so we rarely create for ourselves, rather we make our capacity available to those who wish to create perfume and communicate something. It can be the wish to communicate an image, a feeling, a film, a memory or a landscape.

How is a new perfume created? What starts the process?

Maffei: It starts from an idea. And that idea can be associated to a memory, a moment, a trip, a recollection that lights up this desire to transform it.

At which point does the name of a fragrance come into play?

Maffei: I believe that often the name comes beforehand. It is the starting point, because there must be a continuity between the perfume and its name, the message it wishes to send out.

Obviously you can't name a perfume containing incense, something like "A Day at the Beach"!

Maffei: Obviously not! But then these are decisions made by the brand's creative director. We are briefed on a concept that the owner of the brand has decided to realize. That's why I was telling you that we are a bit like translators... I can take, for example, 'Secrets du Paradis Rouge' by Jul et Mad, a French brand who tell their love story through perfume and this is their fifth chapter. It's dedicated to their honeymoon in Morocco, in a riad, which has become their secret hideaway. Hence the name, the "secrets of the red paradise", Marrakesh is the red city, and inside the riad was filled with orange blossoms and all this brought us to the creation of the fragrance. These are all the messages, all the imagery that Jul and Mad wanted the fragrance to be filled with. So a nose then takes all this information and transforms it.

2016-09-14-1473860252-4139404-JULMADPARADIS_flaconseul.jpg

How long does it take to create a perfume like this?

Maffei: There isn't a standard rule. After all, a perfume is the combination of 50 or 60 or even 80 different components. So we must allow the right amount of time to find the perfect formula.

Does it ever happen, as it does to filmmakers, that once a perfume is finished there are some things that you would have liked to have said through it, and maybe some you didn't want to express?

Maffei: It can happen. The will to experiment never ends. So at times it can happen that you think, well maybe I could have done this in a different way. But then I think I'll do it next!

For you, what is the ideal perfume?

Maffei: All -- there isn't a single one...

Do you really love all notes?

Maffei: No, of course, everyone has favorites. I love woods, I love spices, and I love to use woods and spices together because they create contrast. A perfumer has at his disposal around five to six thousand different materials and to use them all would be impossible. So naturally the palette that we use narrows down to about two hundred raw materials which are the ones that are most liked, most attract us. Often we talk about the olfactory signature of a nose because there are combinations and raw materials that guarantee a good outcome and are liked, stimulate the creator and so he ends up using them almost always or starts from them to create through perfume.

When you are with fellow noses, perfumers, and you all smell something, what do you say?

Maffei: Those who see us from the outside, when we talk -- a fragrance designer or a perfumer, a dealer -- must think we are crazy. First of all, we smell everything and when we detect a scent, and someone asks, "is it good?" before saying yes or no, we start to say, "ah yeah, here there is some Hedione, there is Galaxolide, some orange blossom..." We talk through associations of raw materials and notes. And some have really unrepeatable names.

People Are Getting Their Panties In A Bunch Over These Sexy Knickers

Some English locals are literally getting their panties in a bunch over an older woman hanging out her, ahem, delicates to dry.

Sixty-five-year-old grandmother Rozamund Perrin hung her undergarments on a line in the small English town of Stokeinteignhead, Devon ― only to later find out that they had been stolen.

No, they weren’t taken by someone with a panty fetish. Instead they were left at her door with an unsavory note, which her daughter, Charlotte Wilkinson, posted on Facebook.

“It is total inappropriate for this type of garment to be displayed opposite the village primary school,” the note reads, referencing the pictured black panties.

Wilkinson slammed the anonymous sender for being “small minded."

“Prudishness of this village is unbelievable!!” she said. “Didn’t know there was a law against hanging your knickers on the line?”

Perrin told SWNS that she finds the incident both “funny” and “annoying,” but it’s not the first time her panties have caused a stir. She moved to the small town 13 years ago and said she’s received a complaint from the local council. She’s also had her underwear stolen off the drying line before, but never returned to her with a note in this way. Local police have simply told her to dry her delicates at night time.

Here at Huff/Post50, we see nothing wrong with a woman proudly wearing sexy undergarments. In fact, one of the world’s former oldest women said she was still wearing lacy things at the ripe age of 116! And it seems others don’t have issue with what Perrin decides to wear underneath her clothes, either.

The post, which has gotten hundreds of shares and likes, has also garnered plenty of support for Perrin and her panties.

“Go glam gram!” reads one comment. Others suggested donating panties in an act of defiance. Others suggested Perrin continue to hang racier and racier panties out to dry. One person even posted a photo of a thong and a note of support she’s sending Perrin’s way as an “up your bum” gesture to the panty bandit.

Hilarious.

It’s. Almost. Here.

Ever since MAC cosmetics teased the world in April with a first look at its line devoted to legendary Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, fans of both the brand and the singer have been waiting with bated breath to get their hands ― and eyes ― on the line.

After teasing a few of the offerings in May, MAC revealed the entire collection Wednesday, and let’s just say you won’t be disappointed.

The collection includes rich, matte lipsticks in browns and deep reds, bright, colorful eyeshadows, a brush, a mascara and more.

Fans took to social media to express their excitement over the news, but we think this one pretty much sums it up:

#MACSelect Obsessed & Devoted (who isn’t?) members will have the chance to shop the collection on pre-sale starting September 28. The collection will be available to the public online October 1 and in stores from October 6 through November 17.

And as usual, we’ll be dreaming of it until then.

Looks like Mariah Carey’s vacation is getting off to a sultry start.

On Tuesday, the “Fantasy” singer said hello to Greece with a few sexy selfies. Dressed in a red satin bra, pink robe and fishnet stockings, the diva oozes glamor and confidence.

“Vacation begins,” she captioned one, while she wished her followers “goodnight” with another.

Prince William Has Unexpectedly Strong Feelings About 'The Great British Bakeoff'

Prince William on Wednesday visited Caius House, a youth center in London, where he met with members, unveiled a plaque and got a few pressing feelings off his chest.

According to PA Royal Reporters’ Twitter account, William sounded off on a recent development about “The Great British Bakeoff”  ― that it’s moving channels and losing its beloved hosts, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.

We don’t know about you, but a “thinks it will still be good” from Prince William is enough convincing we need to sleep easy tonight.

To make matters more adorable, the exchange went down while he was ― wait for it ― decorating a cupcake.

Oh, excuse us ― “trying” to decorate a cupcake. Nothing like good old British dry shade, eh?

Kim Kardashian Took 6,000 Selfies During 4-Day Mexican Vacation

We knew Kim Kardashian was a selfie queen, but we had no idea what her duties as social media royalty entailed. Until now, that is.

On Wednesday, Kim took over her sister Kendall Jenner’s website to break down her recent trip to Mexico by the numbers. She revealed that over the four-day trip, she wore nine different swimsuits (if they even classify as that), drank 10 watermelon smoothies with North, and spent a mere four hours on the beach. (That’s it?!)

The most ridiculous statistic, though, was the number of selfies the 35-year-old took in what was essentially an extra-long weekend. The reality star admitted she snapped 6,000 photos of herself throughout the vacation. Yes, 6,000! Most of us have never even had that many photos on our phones. Also, Kim’s iCloud must have millions of pictures stored on it.

Selfish in Mexico

A photo posted by Kim Kardashian West (@kimkardashian) on

We broke down Kim’s digits even further: there are 1,440 minutes in a day, which equals 5,760 minutes in four days, which amounts to roughly one selfie per minute. It’s 1.042, to be exact. Damn, Kim.

(Note: we are aware that the mother-of-two probably uses the burst feature on her iPhone, which would make so much more sense, but being that we’re way less experienced selfie-takers, we found it amusing to picture Kim taking a pic every minute of the day for four days. We wouldn’t put it past her.)

For someone who released an entire book of selfies called Selfish, we can’t say we’re surprised about the numbers in the slightest.

Keep doing you, Kim.

Turns Out 80 Percent Of Eyeglasses Are Controlled By A Single Company

$

When it comes to eyeglasses and sunglasses, you often either lose them or they break easily. And most of the time, the cheaper frames are just as good as designer pairs.

And here’s proof ― they’re probably both made by the same company.

Emily Axford, co-host of TruTV’s “Adam Ruins Everything,” points out in the video above that the whole thing is rigged, explaining that 80 percent of brands ― luxury and affordable ― are owned by one company: Luxottica. And this company controls pretty much the entire eyewear market, from the frames themselves to the stores where we buy our glasses, to even some of our health insurance.

Persol? Luxottica. Prada? Luxottica. Ray Bans, Ralph Lauren, Versace and Michael Kors? Luxottica makes glasses for them all.

Axford says this virtual monopoly gives Luxottica the “power to drive up the price of glasses for everybody, sometimes charging as much as 20 times what they cost to produce.”

So whereas Luxottica could technically just label everything “Luxottica,” they won’t, because Axford states: “What Luxottica is really selling you is the illusion of choice.”

May you see the world a little more clearly now.

Despite losing Eleven somewhere in the Upside Down (the suspense!), it’s nice to see that the real-life Eleven, aka Millie Bobby Brown, is kickin’ it with some of our favorite people in the real world.

On Tuesday, Brown had a cute reunion with her “Stranger Things” co-star Winona Ryder at the Coach show during New York Fashion Week. In an interview with Us Weekly at the event, Brown couldn’t help but gush about the actress, who plays Joyce Byers on the Netflix hit.

“Her talent and her drive [are inspirational],” Brown said. “She is just such an incredible actress, but also a really amazing person.”

Also amazing: these adorable pics of the two hanging out.

Today in random celebrity relationship news, word spread that E! producer extraordinaire Ryan Seacrest and Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima are dating.

Wait, what?

E!, the network that airs Seacrest’s shows, reported the news Wednesday. That means it must be true, right? According to the website, the two were most recently spotted having a “romantic dinner date” in New York City.

Lima even once called Seacrest “charismatic” and “handsome.”

Seacrest and Lima reportedly started hanging out this summer in Rio during the Olympics. If his Instagram account is any indication, the two got up to all kinds of fun things.

“[They’re] good friends,” a source told the site. “She’s still dating Julian Edelman.” (Edelman is a pro football player for the New England Patriots.)

We don’t know what to believe right now. We’ve reached out to reps for both Seacrest and Lima and will update this post accordingly.

Tom Ford Feels 'Repulsed' By His Contribution To Consumer Culture

This article is part of HuffPost’s “Reclaim” campaign, an ongoing project spotlighting the world’s waste crisis and how we can begin to solve it.

Tom Ford is dealing with guilt.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the designer said, “I struggle with the fact that I help create this contemporary consumer culture, and at the same time, I’m repulsed by it and disturbed by it.”

When we talk about consumer culture, we’re talking about humans purchasing 80 billion new items of clothing each year. And in 2015, U.S. consumers alone spent more than $250 billion on clothing and accessories, the Census Bureau estimates.

A conscientious designer who wants to make money while still having a moral compass, Ford thinks all consumers need to keep their priorities in perspective.

“We live in a material world; material beauty brings us a certain level of enjoyment in our lives,” Ford said in the video above. “But we can’t let it overtake that.”

Unavailable Men And Why Women Date Them

$
0
0

What is a “real” relationship? I feel like I can answer that question because I have been in relationships that weren’t “real” and relationships that were, and I can tell you, real is a heck of a lot more fulfilling! Here is an email I received from someone seeking dating advice, who is saying she wants a “real” relationship.

I’m in my late 30s, and it’s been a couple years since my divorce. I have recently been seeing a guy (33, single, no kids) who has been through a couple of bad breakups that really did a number on him. Now he lives in this sort of isolation to avoid suffering.

I like him, but his disconnection is damaging my already damaged self-esteem. We recently talked about this issue, and he made it clear he likes me and likes spending time with me but doesn’t want to have any attachments with me because he’ll not risk being hurt ever again.

We only see each other once a week, no calls or texts in between ‘dates’ and when things tend to get a little bit closer he ‘disappears’ for a couple of weeks and then comes back. I already decided to end it because I want more than this. I want a real relationship.

Ugh. This sounds awful! I completely understand this scenario, because in my younger days, I dated a dozen of these! And guess what I finally realized? I was choosing unavailable men, most likely because I didn’t want the pressure of commitment. I even dated someone for several years, and the minute he committed I couldn’t go through with it. So I guess what I’m saying is, this woman might want to think about whether she has real feelings for him, or if his commitment-phobia is the attraction.

Here’s the thing. I’m hearing a lot of things about him ― HE went through a bad breakup that did a number on HIM, HE made is clear that he won’t risk being hurt, HE disappears... She doesn’t realize that this isn’t about him, but rather about her. He sounds like he needs to be in therapy, or maybe he needs to grow up. By the way, I’m not judging him, I’m just saying he sounds like he has issues.

This woman has already been married. So, now, doesn’t it make sense that she would want someone who really, truly wants something serious? Someone who wants her? I’d say at this stage, she should settle for nothing less than a man who is dying to be with her, who adores her, and who cherishes her ― and for exactly what she is.

There is nothing worse for self-esteem than dating a man who is in and out. No calls or texts between dates? That must make this woman feel horrible, especially after they’ve been intimate. She deserves better! I’m not even saying he isn’t a good guy, but the relationship needs to change or she needs to get out of it.

I think she owes it to herself to have a talk with him. Tell him how she is feeling and basically ask in a really nice way, “In or out?” She can tell him she loves him, that she won’t hurt him, that she will do her best to be there for him. And then she has to leave the ball in his court. If he walks away for good, then she is better off. And, who knows what can happen in the future? Or, he might surprise her and say he will try to be a more committed boyfriend. Whatever ends up happening, she will be better off than she is now. If she continues on this path, her self-esteem will get worse and worse, and she will become more unhappy.

There are so many wonderful men your age out there who want a commitment, who want to be in love and have that nauseating relationship where the two of you talk and kiss and text each other every minute. For me, there is no better feeling, and if this woman wants that, I bet she can have it. But first, she needs to be honest with herself and decide if she really does, or if this guy is what she subconsciously wants because SHE doesn’t want to get hurt again.

6 Fall Looks To Lure The Person You'll Settle For In The Winter

Now that fall is here, anybody who plans on having a drop of sex in the upcoming colder months is rightfully looking for ways to make sure they project “chill” and “not looking for anything serious” to attract potential suitors this fall.

But finding a winter fling is impossible! The people you want to date are either in relationships or they don’t like you. And most other people aren’t “fun to be around” or “listen to what you’re saying 70 percent of the time.”

But as winter marches closer and closer, we must think about looking our best so we can honestly try to attract people we like but then ultimately decide to hook up with somebody we’re not crazy about over and over again while exerting minimal effort in what a robot would call a relationship.

“But how can I snag MY special someone that my family will never hear about?” you might ask.

Never fear!

Peep these hot new looks that will surely rope in that person with whom you’ll “mutually” end things come April.

Deep Red Lipstick + Zip Up + Big Floppy Hat

Wow, nothing says “hey brad. just so you know, I don’t like to have convos over text, just text me when you need to tell me something and we can just talk in person / no, I’m not upset,” more than this traditional autumn ensemble.

Oversized Sweater + Caribou Hide Skirt

Wow, after you find out your coworker who is SO funny and SO cool and just “gets it” is engaged, the dude who keeps misspelling your/you’re name on Bumble will LOVE this classic.

Huge Puff Sheep Jacket + Parental Advisory Explicit Content Sweater

Wow, do I hear wedding bells? No, I don’t. That’s the theme music to “Narcos,” a show you’ve been watching every weekend with a girl you pray isn’t falling in love with you.

Orange Cream Duster + 60’s Shades + Mole

Wow. [Austin Powers voice] Do I make you horny, baby? Do I? DO I!? Good! Because if we didn’t have sex, you’d be dead to me. It’s not that I don’t like you. It’s just that I know in my bones we wont be growing old together. So it’s good to know that you have the desire to fulfill our singular function.

Tan Gentleman Jacket + Hoodie + Shades + Beard Cream

I mean wow, this “What if Scott Ackerman wrote for Vice?” look is perfect for the man looking to settle down with somebody who ALSO threw in the towel mid-August. Happy hunting, bruh bruh!

Grey Turtleneck + Mauve Kaleidoscope Skirt + Dead Bobcat

Wow. Just, wow.  Sure, you spent two months’ salary on an outfit only to find out at Kacie’s halloween party that Justin JUST came out. But on the bright side, if you take your friends advice and “stop bringing that Eric guy around,” you can learn to love this contemporary pre-winter wardrobe.

This will change your brow game.

After attending celebrity makeup artist Sir John’s master class in New York on Wednesday, we picked up a lot of helpful tips for how to beautify and perfect our application techniques.

One of our fave tips? Using glue sticks on your eyebrows.

@clairwestenberg is ROCKIN this #holographic gold eye and a complimentary #SJbrow. #WCW, hands down.

Yes, white glue sticks from your local craft store (not the purple ones, that won’t look cute on anyone)! A quick swipe on each brow, combined with brushing them out, will give you a boyish and lush look.

Sir John was shy about revealing this tip because, well, it’s definitely a little weird. Especially since the trick is also used in the eyebrow-covering process.

Sir John says the sticks will give your brows staying power and a textured, boyish look. “It’s a minimal version of a prosthetic,” he told us.

The makeup artist to Beyonce, Karlie Kloss, Serena Williams and many more celebs also told us that to give eyes and brows a more modern look, leave the brow bone untouched ― no color or highlights are necessary.

Ashley Graham's Lingerie Runway Show Is The Picture Of Body Positivity

New York Fashion Week, an event not typically associated with inclusivity, is wrapping up arguably its most successful attempt yet at celebrating diversity. So it’s pretty fitting that this show was one of the last on the roster.

Model Ashley Graham, a true trailblazer of body positivity, sent her new collection of plus-size lingerie down the runway Wednesday. It was a sensory overload/display of curves with a few familiar faces like models Jordyn Woods, Precious Lee and Tara Lynn, to name a few.

The show at Kia Style360 ― a venue that puts on a slew of shows each year, including collections by Serena Williams ― saw Graham’s latest offerings hit the runway alongside Canadian brand Addition Elle’s holiday ready-to-wear collection.

It’s the second show Graham has put on with Addition Elle, and the buzz and excitement surrounding the show has been palpable. Considering the year Graham has had ― she starred on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, covered major magazines and landed a gig as a judge on “America’s Next Top Model” ―  it’s no wonder the show drew big crowds and media attention.

Of course, it could also have something to do with people wanting to see a slew of gorgeous women showing off some equally gorgeous lingerie. Please join us in basking in the sexy-as-hell inclusive runway below, and check out Addition Elle’s live stream of the show above.

Tim Gunn Thinks You're 'Dumb' For Liking Kanye West's Yeezy Season 4

By now, pop culture fans have all most certainly seen Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 4 collection, which features bodysuits, jackets and bra tops in muted hues.

“I want to make pieces that can be timeless,” West told Vogue before his show at Roosevelt Island last week. “Pieces that you can pick up out of a vintage store in 20 years and say, ‘Wow, I’m happy I have this.’”

One person who is definitely not happy is Tim Gunn.

Gunn spoke to “Access Hollywood” about the Sept. 7 show, and called the entire thing a “hoax.” He’s referring to these items:

“I’m totally perplexed about why the fashion industry has not looked at these, frankly, dumb, basic clothes and cried ‘Hoax,’” the 63-year-old “Project Runway” mentor said. “Kanye West is a sphinx without a riddle. I just don’t understand why people are so in awe. [The models were] basically wearing stretch undergarments.”

“I think the only thing dumber than these clothes would be the people who would buy these clothes.”

“The Emperor’s New Clothes,” anyone?

Lupita Nyong’o has graced the cover of Vogue magazine for the third time, and, of course, she slays. The Oscar-winning actress was photographed by Mario Testino in her hometown of Kenya for the cover story, where she speaks with Vogue about her desire to help other people of color in the industry.

In the new issue, published online on Thursday, Nyong’o talks about how she used her new found success in Hollywood to bring diverse stories like Danai Gurira’s “Eclipsed” and the upcoming movie adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah to life.

“Being able to use my platform to expand and diversify the African voice,” Nyong’o told Vogue, “I feel very passionate about that. It feels intentional, meaningful.”

Nyong’o, who stars in Disney’s upcoming live-action drama “Queen of Katwe,” also told Vogue that she’s well aware that her personal success has an impact on the women who look like her and have rarely seen themselves represented in the media before.

“There are certain cards that have been dealt me that I take on,” she said.

“I want to create opportunities for other people of color because I’m fortunate enough to have a platform to do that. That is why ‘Eclipsed’ and even ‘Queen of Katwe’ are so important, to change the narrative, offer a new lens on African identity.”

Before Buying More Clothes At H&M, Read This

This article is part of HuffPost’s “Reclaim” campaign, an ongoing project spotlighting the world’s waste crisis and how we can begin to solve it.

H&M, long the poster child of fast fashion, seems to realize that its industry’s excesses are going out of style.

The Swedish apparel giant is taking strides to change its ways. But are its attempts to recycle clothes and lessen its environmental impact enough to make shopping at its stores an ethically sound decision? The answer is complicated.

H&M sold $25 billion worth of cheap clothes around the world last year. Second only to Zara-owner Inditex in sales, the company is also on the hook for helping to create a consumer culture that treats clothing like food that’s about to expire. The average American now throws away about 70 pounds of clothing per year ― the equivalent in weight to more than 200 men’s T-shirts ― and nearly all of that ends up in landfills.

Textile suppliers that H&M has worked with heavily pollute waterways in China with dyes and other runoff from their factories.

After the collapse of the Rana Plaza sweatshop complex killed 1,135 people in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2013, H&M spearheaded an effort to reform the industry ― even though H&M wasn’t directly linked to the disaster. But the company quickly fell short of promises it made to overseas workers.

Recently, however, H&M has tried to improve itself.

In April, the Swedish apparel giant launched an event it called World Recycle Week, asking people to drop off their unwanted, used or damaged clothes so the company could recycle or refurbish them. The occasion, promoted by rapper M.I.A., served to amplify the voucher program H&M created in 2013 to provide discounts to customers who donated old clothes.

In addition, the 3,600-store chain sells a “Conscious” collection, made using recycled fabrics and employing more sustainable methods than are typically used to make garments.

So, how ethical is it to buy clothes from H&M? That remains central to the fashion-focused second phase of “Reclaim” ― The Huffington Post’s editorial campaign to document and fight the world’s waste crisis ― which launched earlier this month.

Much has been written about the ethical conundrum H&M shoppers face. Rather than retrace those writers steps, we’ve put together a list of stories worth reading before doing any back-to-school shopping at the fast-fashion giant.

  • Is H&M misleading customers with all its talk of sustainability?
    [Quartz / Marc Bain]
    Conclusion:
It’s hard to say, but if you’re going to shop at a fast-fashion retailer, H&M might be your best bet.

  • Am I a fool to expect more than corporate greenwashing?
    [The Guardian / Lucy Siegle]
    Conclusion:
Be cynical. Even H&M’s recycling week is ripped off from a more sincere grassroots campaign in the United Kingdom.

  • The Myth of the Ethical Shopper
[The Huffington Post / Michael Hobbes]
    Conclusion:
“We are not going to shop ourselves into a better world. ... Behind the 50 demonstrators, a line of 300 customers stretched
    around the block.”

  • The Power of Buying Less by Buying Better
    [The Atlantic / Elizabeth Cline]
    Conclusion:
The movement of people starting to buy higher-quality, longer-lasting clothing should cautiously give us hope.

  • Inside H&M’s Quest For Sustainability In Fast Fashion
    [Forbes / Lydia Dishman]
    Conclusion:
H&M is really trying! Let’s give credit where it’s due.

  • Making the Case Against Fast-Fashion Collaborations
[The Business of Fashion / Eugene Rabkin]
    Conclusion:
Don’t expect high-end designer collections at fast-fashion retailers to improve the overall quality of retailers’ mass-produced clothes. There’s still a gaping chasm between high-fashion and fast-fashion quality.

  • Fast Fashion Is Creating An Environmental Crisis
    [Newsweek / Alden Wicker]
    Conclusion:
“[W]hat H&M is doing is nothing special. Its salvaged clothing goes through almost the exact same process as garments donated to, say, Goodwill, or really anywhere else.”

  • Planet Money’s T-Shirt Project
    [NPR]
    Conclusion:
This isn’t specific to H&M, but it gives a powerful sense of how the globalized apparel supply chain works. The project tracked the production of a Planet Money-branded shirt through its 20,000-mile journey across three continents to get to New York.

  • Fast Fashion Is the Second Dirtiest Industry in the World, Next to Big Oil
    [EcoWatch]
    Conclusion:
Don’t look to solutions from huge fast-fashion companies. Designers like Eileen Fisher and Ralph Lauren are making real strides.

H&M said it has collected 77.6 million pounds of clothing since launching its recycling program.

“Our ambition is to create a closed loop for fashion, where used garments and textiles are reused, recycled and converted into new fashion,” a spokeswoman for the company told HuffPost. “This will reduce our dependence on new resources and will take us from a linear to a circular economy.”

Color And Your Closet

We've most likely all done it many times: leaned against the open door of our closet blankly wondering what to wear and finding nothing suitable. Back in the day, people would lay out their clothes the night before in preparation for the next day. It was a time saver during a time when people had more of it. With our fast paced world, we are faced with various options that make it difficult to advance forward. We might work from home, roles might be reversed in terms of parenting, and we have to guide the hands of our children to work with fashion so they are comfortable. I have always felt that when we like what we wear, we feel better about who we are. I like to be comfortable in my clothes as much as my own skin!

Our schedules are more demanding as we stream along in daily life and we need to save time where we can. So I thought about this and personally tested several directions regarding saving time when dressing for the day. My way around this issue is to coordinate my closet by organizing the colors in order of how they make me feel. I do this on a day when I am in a particularly good mood and that promises to help me arrange my wardrobe intuitively, rather than emotionally.

Here are some tips on ways to organize your closet so you operate more efficiently and maybe even feel your best:

  • Always think in terms of shades and keep shades together.

  • Start with darker variations of colors in the back of your closet, and lighter shades colors toward the front.

  • Divide your colors according to season for easy retrieval.

  • Pay special attention to the colors that make you feel the best.

  • Section off your closet in half: work clothes and play clothes.

The above may seem simple, however, that is the beauty of it. This system has the benefit of allowing you to save time, reduce stress and look fabulous all in one package. I can't begin to tell you what it has done for me. And even if you have someone you have to share closets with, it will make that cohabitation all the more pleasurable because you lack the stress of a massive decision. I believe that when you look good, you feel good... and who doesn't want to feel good?
